Abstract This study introduces a computational method integrating molecular simulations and machine learning (ML) to assess the CO adsorption capacities of synthesized and hypothetical metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) at various pressures. After extracting structural, chemical, and energy-based features of the synthesized and hypothetical MOFs (hMOFs), we conducted molecular simulations to compute CO adsorption in synthesized MOFs and used these simulation results to train ML models for predicting CO adsorption in hMOFs. Results showed that CO uptakes of synthesized MOFs and hMOFs are between 0.02–2.28 mol/kg and 0.45–3.06 mol/kg, respectively, at 1 bar, 298 K. At low pressures (0.1 and 1 bar), Henry’s constant of CO is the most dominant feature, whereas structural properties such as surface area and porosity are more influential for determining the CO uptakes of MOFs at high pressure (10 bar). Structural and chemical analyses revealed that MOFs with narrow pores (4.4–7.3 Å), aromatic ring-containing linkers and carboxylic acid groups, along with metal nodes such as Co, Zn, Ni achieve high CO uptakes at 1 bar. Our approach evaluated the CO uptakes of ~ 100,000 MOFs, the most extensive and diverse set studied for CO capture thus far, as a robust alternative to computationally demanding molecular simulations and iterative experiments.

The project aims to address the critical issue of urban air pollution caused by vehicular emissions. By integrating Machine Learning (ML) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, this project seeks to develop a real-time monitoring and control system to mitigate vehicular pollution. IoT sensors will be deployed on vehicles and in strategic urban locations to collect real-time data on pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and particulate matter (PM). This data will be analyzed using advanced ML algorithms to identify patterns, predict pollution levels, and recommend actionable measures to reduce emissions. The project will also incorporate engine model and fuel quality data to provide a comprehensive analysis of emission and traffic-related pollution. The expected outcome is an intelligent, data-driven system capable of providing timely insights and interventions, thereby contributing to cleaner air and healthier urban environments. Current evidence suggests that airborne pollutants have a detrimental effect on fetal growth through the emergence of small for gestational age (SGA) or term low birth weight (TLBW). The study's objective was to critically evaluate the available literature on the association between environmental pollution and the incidence of SGA or TLBW occurrence. A comprehensive literature search was conducted across Pubmed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and Google Scholar using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The methodology adhered to the PRISMA guidelines. The systematic review protocol was registered in PROSPERO with ID number: CRD42022329624. As a result, 69 selected papers described the influence of environmental pollutants on SGA and TLBW occurrence with an Odds Ratios (ORs) of 1.138 for particulate matter ≤ 10 μm (PM10), 1.338 for particulate matter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM2.5), 1.173 for ozone (O3), 1.287 for sulfur dioxide (SO2), and 1.226 for carbon monoxide (CO). All eight studies analyzed validated that exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is a risk factor for SGA or TLBW. Pregnant women in the high-risk group of SGA occurrence, i.e., those living in urban areas or close to sources of pollution, are at an increased risk of complications. Understanding the exact exposure time of pregnant women could help improve prenatal care and timely intervention for fetuses with SGA. Nevertheless, the pervasive air pollution underscored in our findings suggests a pressing need for adaptive measures in everyday life to mitigate worldwide environmental pollution. [Display omitted] Antibacterial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) is highly effective in killing bacteria, while the problem of hypoxia and limited light penetration in deep tissue has not been properly solved. In addition, few aPDT works take into account the regulation of inflammation, which is an important regulatory process after antimicrobial therapy and the final purpose of treatment. In this work, to address the above isssues, we have designed a multi-functional composite UCNPs-Ce6-Mn(CO) 5 Br@Silane (referred to as UCM@Si), which consists of several key components: Up-conversion nanoparticles (UCNPs: NaErF 4 :Tm3+@NaYF 4 :Yb3+), Chlorin e6 (Ce6) and Manganese pentacarbonyl bromide (Mn(CO) 5 Br). When exposed to near-infrared (NIR) light (980 nm), the UCNPs can emit strong red light at 655 nm which further trigger the aPDT of Ce6. The generated reactive oxygen (ROS) subsequently break the metal carbonyl bond of Mn(CO) 5 Br, leading to the production of carbon monoxide (CO) molecules as well as manganese ions (Mn2+), which further decomposes hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2) in the microenvironment to oxygen (O 2). Therefore, this simple nanocomposite not only provides substantial self-oxygen replenishment for enhanced aPDT, but also facilitates effective inflammation regulation via CO across a wide range of deep infections. This approach leverages the unique properties of these materials to combat bacterial infections by simultaneously killing bacteria, regulating inflammation, and enhancing the oxygen levels in the affected microenvironment. This O 2 and CO gas based aPDT treatment system offers a promising approach to comprehensively address microbial-induced infectious diseases, particularly deep infections, holding the potential clinical applications. Air pollution in several cities in Indonesia has been increasing significantly over the years. One of the primary triggers is the rise in motor vehicle activity. This increase is due to the improving economic conditions and the decreasing prices of motor vehicles. Vehicles produce various types of pollutants. The pollutants contained in vehicle exhaust gas are carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxide (NOx), sulfur (SOx) and dust (PM). One of the busiest areas for motorized vehicle activity is the Makassar Port Area, which is the largest port in Eastern Indonesia. This area experiences high vehicle activity. The emissions reviewed in this research are CO (carbon monoxide) and NOx (nitrogen oxide) in the Makassar Port Area which is located on Jalan Nusantara, Jalan Sulawesi, Jalan Siswa Army, Dr. Wahidin Jalan Sudirohusodo, Jalan Sangir, Jalan Kalimantan, Jalan Sarappo, Jalan Banda and Jalan Butung. This research utilizes historical data on traffic volume, wind speed and direction, air humidity, air temperature, air pressure, solar radiation, cloud cover and surface height. Air dispersion analysis was carried out using AERMOD software. The highest emissions obtained were 67,121 μg/m³ for CO and 9,570 μg/m³ for NOx under existing conditions and after implementing traffic management measures, the highest emissions were reduced to 45,737 μg/m³ for CO and 7,217 μg/m³ for NOx. These results conclude that traffic management can reduce air pollution. Air dispersion is not only influenced by vehicle volume but also meteorological factors. Carbon monoxide poisoning remains a leading cause of accidental poisoning worldwide (both at home and at work), and it is also a cause of suicidal poisoning. Such poisoning can arise following prolonged exposure to low levels of CO or following brief exposure to high concentrations of the gas. In fact, despite exposure limits, high safety standards, and the availability of CO alarms, nearly 50,000 people in the United States visit the emergency department each year due to poisoning. Additionally, CO poisoning in the United States causes up to 500 deaths each year. Despite the widespread nature of this form of poisoning, known about for centuries and whose damage mechanisms have been recognized (or rather hypothesized about) since the 1800s, early recognition, especially of late complications, and treatment remain a medical challenge. A well-designed therapeutic diagnostic process is necessary so that indication for hyperbaric or normobaric therapy is correctly made and so that patients are followed up even after acute exposure to diagnose late complications early. Furthermore, it is necessary to consider that in the setting of emergency medicine, CO poisoning can be part of a differential diagnosis along with other more frequent conditions, making its recognition difficult. The last thirty years have been marked by a significant increase in knowledge regarding the toxicity of CO, as well as its functioning and its importance at physiological concentrations in mammalian systems. This review, taking into account the significant progress made in recent years, aims to reconsider the pathogenicity of CO, which is not trivially just poisonous to tissues. Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) is a progressive form of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease characterised by fat accumulation, inflammation, oxidative stress, fibrosis, and impaired liver regeneration. In this study, we found that heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is induced in both MASH patients and in a MASH mouse model. Further, hepatic carbon monoxide (CO) levels in MASH model mice were >2-fold higher than in healthy mice, suggesting that liver HO-1 is activated as MASH progresses. Based on these findings, we used CO-loaded red blood cells (CO-RBCs) as a CO donor in the liver, and evaluated their therapeutic effect in methionine-choline deficient diet (MCDD)-induced and high-fat-diet (HFD)-induced MASH model mice. Intravenously administered CO-RBCs effectively delivered CO to the MASH liver, where they prevented fat accumulation by promoting fatty acid oxidation via AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activation and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor induction. They also markedly suppressed Kupffer cell activation and their corresponding anti-inflammatory and antioxidative stress activities in MASH mice. CO-RBCs also helped to restore liver regeneration in mice with HFD-induced MASH by activating AMPK. We confirmed the underlying mechanisms by performing in vitro experiments in RAW264.7 cells and palmitate-stimulated HepG2 cells. Taken together, CO-RBCs show potential as a promising cellular treatment for MASH.

Abstract Carbon monoxide (CO) is a primary air pollutant and a poisonous species for human beings, animals, and some catalytic reactions. Meanwhile, CO is also a versatile feedstock in the chemical industry to produce high‐value chemicals and clean fuels, which has stimulated extensive research interests in exploiting efficient CO conversion processes. Redox potential is a key thermodynamic quantity in these processes whereas only standard reduction potentials at 25°C and 1 atm are currently available. Herein, it is the first time to report the effects of temperature (0–1000°C), pressure (1–100 atm), and adsorption on the redox potentials of 18 CO conversion reactions to form carbon dioxide, methane, straight‐chain alkanes (ethane, propane, and butane), light olefins (ethylene, propylene, and butylene), benzene, alcohols, aldehydes, acids, and dimethyl ether, based on theoretical calculations. It was noticed that gas‐phase, aqueous‐phase, and adsorption‐state redox potentials decrease with increasing temperature at an increased rate while they show different responses to pressure change. Namely, gas‐phase and most aqueous‐phase redox potentials increase with pressure at a gradually declined rate, while adsorption‐state redox potentials are not influenced by pressure. Most importantly, the significant differences up to 2.06 V under varied conditions highlight the necessity of applying operando redox potentials for CO conversion reactions.

Capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) and transforming it into valuable fuels offers a dual benefit: the potential to reduce atmospheric CO2 levels and decrease our dependency on fossil fuels. Plasma‐assisted CO2 to carbon monoxide (CO) conversion stands out within the various CO2 recycling methods, with research primarily emphasizing its energy efficiency and conversion efficacy. However, investigations of CO2 conversion under real air conditions are relatively scarce, and the effects of the other atmospheric molecules on the CO2 conversion process require further exploration. We have induced plasma chemical reactions by generating ultrashort pulse laser filaments inside a sealed‐off cavity with variable air pressures. Simultaneously, we applied mid‐infrared laser absorption spectroscopy to monitor the time evolution of the reaction products. The peak CO2‐to‐CO conversion ratio was achieved at an air pressure of 8000 Pa, which resulted in a CO concentration of 82 ppm. The experimental results suggested that nitrogen (N2) plays a promoting role in CO2‐to‐CO conversion, while the presence of oxygen (O2) seems to hinder the process. The hydroxyl radical (OH) arising from water molecules (H2O) limits the accumulation of CO at lower air pressures. However, at higher air pressures, the reduced OH radical concentration shows negligible impact on the CO2‐to‐CO conversion ratios. In addition, the study revealed that atmospheric plasmas produce a high concentration of hydrogen cyanide (HCN), which is directly proportional to the levels of ambient humidity. This research contributes to the development of strategies to mitigate the production of harmful gases like HCN in CO2 conversion, thereby promoting the ecofriendly conversion of atmospheric CO2. As carbon monoxide has a broad spectrum of biological activities, its production by plasma is a significant advantage in medicine. This paper presents a comparative study of the CO production of two plasma jets: a MHz‐jet and a kHz‐jet. Both were fed with a helium gas with CO2 ${\text{CO}}_{2}$ admixture (0%–1%). CO was produced by CO2 ${\text{CO}}_{2}$ dissociation and its maximal concentration was hundreds of parts per million, which is safe for clinical applications. For the same specific energy input, the CO production was more efficient for the kHz‐jet than the MHz‐jet. Both had antibacterial properties on Escherichia coli, and the addition of CO2 ${\text{CO}}_{2}$ improved them for the MHz‐jet, while it reduced them for the kHz‐jet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Air pollution is associated with population growth and economic advancement. Severe cardiovascular complications that require extensive medical service are aggravated by air pollutants. This study illustrates the trend and correlation of cardiovascular disease hospital admission with air pollutants in Sabah for the past 9 years (2010–2019). The additional information obtained from this study will be useful to enhance proper environmental management and reduce air pollution in the cities of Sabah.METHOD: Ecological study design was utilized with cardiovascular disease hospital admission and ambient air pollutants in Sabah retrospective data. Data were collected from four districts with established continuous air quality monitoring stations. Collected data were analysed spatially and statistically. Autoregressive integrated moving average modelling was implemented to forecast the cardiovascular disease hospital admission.FINDING: Kota Kinabalu recorded the highest hospital admissions for cardiovascular disease, followed by Sandakan, Tawau and Keningau. The cardiovascular disease hospital admission prevalence rate in Kota Kinabalu was 12.45 per 1,000 population, followed by Sandakan, Tawau and Keningau (4.54; 4.18; and 5.88 per 1,000 population) in 2019. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The rising number of vehicles used for transportation, which is attributed to the steady increase in population, is known to be a major contributor of air pollution, which, in turn, can have adverse effects on the environment and human health. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to evaluate the concentration of carbon monoxide and fine particulate matter in the air and their potential health risks and further examine the use of probabilistic methods to simulate the sensitivity of people living in communities and school children to these pollutants.METHODS: This study collected carbon monoxide and fine particulate matter samples from 32 stations near community houses and 14 sites near schools located along roads. Hazard quotient and target hazard quotient calculations were used to estimate the non-carcinogenic health risks associated with exposure to these substances for both community adults and school children. Finally, Monte Carlo simulations were applied to analyze the sensitivity and uncertainty risks. FINDINGS: As per the results, the highest level of carbon monoxide was recorded in station 22, with 6729 microgram per cubic meter, while the lowest was in station 24, with 1037 microgram per cubic meter. Station 10 had the highest concentration of fine particulate matter at 116 microgram per cubic meter, as opposed to station 2 with the lowest level at 10 microgram per cubic meter. In children, the hazard quotient value for carbon monoxide was found to be highest at 3.013, with the lowest at 0.614. Similarly, the highest level of target hazard quotient for carbon monoxide in children was 7.370, whereas the lowest was 1.522. For fine particulate matter, the highest risk level was 0.180. Additionally, the highest, and lowest levels of target hazard quotient for fine particulate matter were 0.311 and 0.037, respectively. Deterministic and probabilistic approaches were used to assess the risks these pollutants impose on adults and school children based on their daily inhalation rate. The results revealed that the 5th and 95th percentiles of cancer risk for carbon monoxide in adults were 2.85 and 6.11, respectively, indicating medium risks. However, for fine particulate matter, the 5th, and 95th percentiles were 0.09 and 0.19, respectively, signifying lower risks. For school children, the percentiles for carbon monoxide and fine particulate matter were 1.20 and 2.50, respectively, demonstrating higher risks.CONCLUSION: As per the results, it was determined that the hazard quotient risk for carbon monoxide in adults exceeded the standard, >1, thus posing a risk. Only three stations had hazard quotient values lower than 1, which is deemed of safe level. Most of the fine particulate matter risk assessment results had hazard quotient values lower than 1, indicating a safe level. However, all other 30 stations had exceeded the World Health Organization standard (>1), thus demonstrating risks. The likelihood of the inhabitants being at risk increased as the frequency of discrete exposure occurrences increased; this is evidenced by target hazard quotient calculation results for both carbon monoxide and fine particulate matter at the 32 monitored station areas. These results warrant that future research should focus on reducing carbon monoxide and fine particulate matter in the environment by fostering awareness among local and national stakeholders as well as the academe; this may allow South Tangerang to become a center of excellence for green schools in the area.

Karachi is Pakistan's largest city, with all the features of a densely populated metropolitan. One of the city's significant issues is air quality, which is linked to the urban environment and pollution. The goal of this study is to show how Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can help with exposure, risk assessment, and emission predicting in Karachi. The study's major goal is to develop a GIS model that can analyze, predict, and analyze carbon monoxide (CO) levels throughout the city as pollution surface. To achieve this objective and aim, sample data have been collected, processed, and managed to generate a dynamic GIS model of Carbon monoxide levels of the study area. To better visualization and analysis, GIS and geostatistical (interpolation) models are used to develop interactive and dynamic CO pollution models. Inverse distance weighted (IDW) interpolation was used to create a surface from CO survey data. For the evaluation of CO, zonal statistics were used as districts wise Minimum, Maximum, Range, Mean and Standard Deviation values. The mean values of later districts were used for mapping displays. Data collected in the field and analyzed during the inquiry found that (CO) emissions were within acceptable ambient air quality requirements and limits. Recently, the use of earth‐abundant base metals including Cu, Co, Mn, Fe, Ni as catalysts has enabled advances in carbonylative coupling of alkyl electrophiles for approaching diverse carbonyl compounds or their derivatives, notably, some of which are of synthetic importance but difficult to be synthesized through previous reported methods. Herein, we have summarized and discussed these recent achievements in base‐metal‐catalyzed carbonylative C—C, C—N, C—O, C—X coupling and other carbonylation reactions of unactivated alkyl electrophiles using CO as C1 source. Traffic emissions are a major source of ambient air pollution, and exposure to these emissions has been linked to numerous adverse health effects. Our study investigated the reduction of traffic emissions in downtown Tianjin, China, and assessed its health benefits. Based on the vehicle emission inventory, The Atmospheric Dispersion Modelling System (ADMS) was adopted for simulating the dispersion of traffic-related air pollutants including primary fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and carbon monoxide (CO). The Benefits Mapping and Analysis Program (BenMAP) was then used to quantify the benefits of emission reductions with respect to cardiovascular disease and respiratory disease. We found a downward trend in PM2.5 and CO concentrations from 2015 to 2019 (PM2.5: 17.8 to 10.5μg/m3, CO: 2.3 to 1.3mg/m3). Furthermore, in line with the reduction of average annual PM2.5 and CO attributable to traffic emissions during 2016–2019 compared with 2015, the accumulative deaths from the two diseases mentioned above in these years decreased by 156 and 961 respectively. Our study constructs an integrated framework combining emission inventories, air quality modeling, and population health benefits, which can be used for further health effects of related air quality improvement. The likelihood of the inhabitants being at risk increased as the frequency of discrete exposure occurrences increased; this is evidenced by target hazard quotient calculation results for both carbon monoxide and fine particulate matter at the 32 monitored station areas. These results warrant that future research should focus on reducing carbon monoxide and fine particulate matter in the environment by fostering awareness among local and national stakeholders as well as the academe; this may allow South Tangerang to become a center of excellence for green schools in the area. Particulate matter (PM) exposure from ambient air has been implicated in several diseases, which necessitates periodic air monitoring in every dwelling place, particularly urban centers, to detect overexposure early. The main objective of this study was to determine the levels of PM2.5 and associated elements, namely carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (O3), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in Lagos, Nigeria. An Aerosol Mass Monitor was employed to quantify the concentrations of PM2.5, NO2, CO, and O3 at ten selected locations in the city, namely, Allen Avenue, Kolington, Isheri, Badagry, Opebi, Eti-Osa, Ajeniya, Awolowo, Orile, and Ajegunle. The values obtained were thereafter used to estimate the hazard quotient (HQ) of the average hourly dose (AHD) and average daily dose (ADD) exposures to the particles. The results revealed that PM2.5 levels in all the locations were above the 15µg/m³ permissible level recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), except in Badagry (5.36µg/m³). NO2 was above the 25µg/m³ permissible level in all locations except in Badagry (6.11µg/m³) and Ajeniya (0.00µg/m³). Meanwhile, in all the locations, CO was above the tolerable level (i.e., >7µg/m³) while O3 was within permissible levels (i.e., <100µg/m³). The HQ of the AHD of the pollutants was less than the threshold of 1, but the HQ of the ADD was greater than 1 in many locations. It can be inferred from the results that daily exposure to PM2.5, NO2, and CO in the city can cause serious health consequences for residents. The principal-component-based radiative transfer model retrieval algorithm (PCRTM-RA) for carbon monoxide (CO) retrieval has been improved for better use of National Airborne Sounder Testbed-Interferometer (NAST-I) measurements obtained during the Fire Influence on Regional to Global Environments and Air Quality field campaign. One of the explicit purposes of the campaign was to characterize wildfire-induced atmospheric changes. Coincidental measurements from various airborne instruments, including NAST-I infrared hyperspectral measurements from the NASA ER-2 aircraft, provided us an opportunity to test and improve the PCRTM-RA CO retrieval. By relaxing the vertical correlation of CO profiles in the a priori covariance constraint, a significant improvement in the vertical structure of the CO retrieval has been confirmed. The methodology is validated using a synthetic testing dataset that covers observations associated with various CO vertical profiles, including that of an extremely polluted atmosphere. The methodology is also applied to real NAST-I measurements, and the results have successfully demonstrated the capability of using PCRTM-RA retrieval results for CO plume evolution and transport monitoring.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an endogenous signaling molecule with broad therapeutic effects. Here, a multifunctional X‐ray‐triggered carbon monoxide (CO) and manganese dioxide (MnO2) generation nanoplatform based on metal carbonyl and scintillating nanoparticles (SCNPs) is reported. Attributed to the radioluminescent characteristic of SCNPs, UV‐responsive Mn2(CO)10 is not only indirectly activated to release CO by X‐ray but can also be degraded into MnO2. A high dose of CO can be used as a glycolytic inhibitor for tumor suppression; it will also sensitize tumor cells to radiotherapy. Meanwhile MnO2, as the photolytic byproduct of Mn2(CO)10, has both glutathione (GSH) depletion and Fenton‐like Mn2+ delivery properties to produce highly toxic hydroxyl radical (⋅OH) in tumors. Thus, this strategy can realize X‐ray‐activated CO release, GSH depletion, and ⋅OH generation for cascade cancer radiosensitization. Ferrochrome (FeCr) is the main source of virgin chromium (Cr) units used in modern-day chromium (Cr) containing alloys. The vast majority of produced Cr is used during the production of stainless steel, which owes its corrosion resistance mainly to the presence of Cr. In turn, stainless steel is mainly produced from Cr-containing scrap metal and FeCr, which is a relatively crude alloy between iron (Fe) and Cr. The production of FeCr is an energy and material-intensive process, and a relatively wide variety of by-products, typically classified as waste materials by the FeCr industry, are created during FeCr production. The type and extent of waste generation are dictated by the smelting route used and the management practices thereof employed by a specific smelter. In some cases, waste management of hazardous and non-hazardous materials may be classified as insufficient. Hazardous materials, such as hexavalent Cr, i.e., Cr(VI), -containing wastes, are only partially mitigated. Additionally, energy-containing wastes, such as carbon monoxide (CO)-rich off-gas, are typically discarded, and energy-invested materials, such as fine oxidative sintered chromite, are either stockpiled or sold as ordinary chromite. In cases where low-value containing wastes are generated, such as rejects from ore beneficiation processes, consistent and efficient processes are either difficult to employ or the return on investment of such processes is not economically viable. More so, the development of less carbon (C)-intensive (e.g., partial replacement of C reductants) and low-temperature pellet curing processes are currently not considered by the South African FeCr smelting industry. The reasoning for this is mainly due to increased operation costs (if improved waste management were to be implemented/higher cost reductants were used) and a lack of research initiatives. These reasons result in the stagnation of technologies. From an environmental point of view, smelting industries are pressured to reduce C emissions. An attractive approach for removing oxygen from the target metal oxides, and the mitigation of gaseous C, is by using hydrogen as a reductant. By doing so, water vapor is the only by-product. It is however expected that stable metal oxides, such as the Cr-oxide present in chromite, will be significantly more resistive to gaseous hydrogen-based reduction when compared to Fe-oxides. In this review, the various processes currently used by the South African FeCr industry are summarized in detail, and the waste materials per process step are identified. The limitations of current waste management regimes and possible alternative routes are discussed where applicable. Various management regimes are identified that could be improved, i.e., by utilizing the energy associated with CO-rich off-gas combustion, employing a low-temperature alternative chromite pelletization process, and considering the potential of hydrogen as a chromite reductant. Introduction: Air pollutants emitted from household spray products used in our homes and offices have adverse effects on human health. The quantification and identification of emission sources of air pollutants forms a foundation for an effective indoor exposure control. This study presents the results of a fundamental study conducted to evaluate the kinetics and emission trends Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOCs) and Carbon Monoxide (CO) from household spray products. Materials and methods: Fortyfive (45) commonly used household spray products were selected for this study. The experiment was conducted in an isolated empty room of dimension (2.72×2.82×2.00) m3 with no known/significant indoor emission source(s). CO and TVOCs concentrations were measured with Aeroqual® 500 series monitor with CO and TVOCs head at 15 min, 1 h, 3 h, and 24 h, for all 45 samples of household spray products. Results: Spontaneous second – order conversion of TVOCs to CO was observed for most of the spray products in the indoor environment. For the insecticides samples, TVOCs initial concentrations were 7.2–73±19.76 ppm which after one hour the concentrations became 1.8 – 17±7.20 ppm. CO measured initial concentration were 0 – 4±1.08 ppm which the concentration levels reduced to 0–7±2.16 ppm. TVOCs concentration was above the permissible limit set by USEPA and CO concentration for some of the air fresheners, perfume, shoe impregnation spray and hair sprays fall short the limit of 40,081.89 and 25,562.37 µg/m3 set by United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and World Health Organization (WHO), respectively. Conclusion: As the concentration of TVOCs decreased as the concentration the concentration, CO increased following a second order kinetics. The result obtained will help in the development of safer products and a proper guide on how to use them in a way it will not cause harm to both the user of the product and the environment.

This cross-sectional study investigated the indoor air quality (IAQ) of public health centers (PHCs) and primary health care units in Bangkok to determine the impact of the different locations and ventilation systems concerning IAQ. Three indoor air pollutants: PM2.5, CO2, and CO were measured in three areas (medical record departments, outpatient departments and examination rooms) of six PHCs located in two different locations (main and secondary roadsides). The results showed that the average levels of PM2.5, CO2, and CO in the PHCs located on main roadsides were higher than those located on secondary roadsides. Among these parameters, only CO was found to significantly differ between those two locations indicating the result of vehicles and traffic sources regarding indoor CO level. Furthermore, all parameters were compared among the sampling areas with different ventilation systems; natural ventilation and air conditioner with and without ventilation fan. The amounts of all three pollutants significantly differed in each area with different ventilation systems. The average levels of PM2.5 and CO2 were the highest in areas with air conditioner without ventilation fan, while the level of CO was the highest in areas with natural ventilation. The ventilation was proved to be a key measure to improve IAQ. PHCs should consider ventilation efficacy to improve the IAQ by using ventilation fans in rooms using air conditioners. Finally, the average levels of all parameters were found below the recommended values in related standards, indicating safe IAQ for people working and receiving services in PHCs.

Carbon monoxide-releasing molecules (CORMs) are promising candidates for producing carbon monoxide in the mammalian body for therapeutic purposes. At higher concentrations, CO has a harmful effect on the mammalian organism. However, lower doses at a controlled rate can provide cellular signaling for mandatory pharmacokinetic and pathological activities. To date, exploring the therapeutic implications of CO dose as a prodrug has attracted much attention due to its therapeutic significance. There are two different methods of CO insertion, i.e., indirect and direct exogenous insertion. Indirect exogenous insertion of CO suggests an advantage of reduced toxicity over direct exogenous insertion. For indirect exogenous insertion, researchers are facing the issue of tissue selectivity. To solve this issue, developers have considered the newly produced CORMs. Herein, metal carbonyl complexes (MCCs) are covalently linked with CO molecules to produce different CORMs such as CORM-1, CORM-2, and CORM-3, etc. All these CORMs required exogenous CO insertion to achieve the therapeutic targets at the optimized rate under peculiar conditions or/and triggering. Meanwhile, the metal residue was generated from i-CORMs, which can propagate toxicity. Herein, we explain CO administration, water-soluble CORMs, tissue accumulation, and cytotoxicity of depleted CORMs and the kinetic profile of CO release. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To sustainably reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure, CO2 is reduced to carbon monoxide (CO) using nonthermal plasma (NTP) flow and a catalyst. In a liquefied natural gas (LNG) gas-turbine combined power generation plant with high power generation efficiency, CO2 zero-emission can be achieved for the power plant if the energy efficiency of CO2 reduction by NTP is at least 49%. In this study, CO2 reduction performance is evaluated for a two-step process using different gas mixtures. First, CO2 is adsorbed from a gas flow mixture of nitrogen (N2) and CO2 (~10% concentration) by an adsorbent; second, CO2 is desorbed and concentrated by NTP flow to a higher concentration from 19% to 25% and reduced by N2 NTP flow and a catalyst under all experimental conditions. γ-alumina, copper, and copper doped alumina are used as catalysts, and the results are compared with those of a previous study where zeolite was used. The energy efficiency increases with the elapsed time and can reach 9−11%. When using copper doped alumina, plasma-catalysis promotes CO2 reduction even in low-temperature environments at ~80 ℃, resulting in a higher CO concentration relative to the CO2 concentration and the highest efficiency of all tested catalysts: conversion efficiency is 18% and energy efficiency is 11%.

Consumption of fossil fuels has led to yearly increases in emissions of CO2, a main component of the greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. As such, methods to reduce CO2 emissions and treat the emitted CO2 are being researched around the world. One method of interest in treating CO2 is the use of non-thermal equilibrium plasma, which is low in cost and highly efficient. Nanosecond (NS) pulsed power generators with very short voltage durations of 5 ns have recently been developed. Such power generators feature minimal loss of heat and high electron energy. This study examined the characteristics of NS pulsed discharges when used to convert CO2 in order to determine its decomposition and conversion efficiency and compare it with other discharge methods. The effects on the CO2 conversion rate of changing the diameter of the central wire electrode and adding Ar were investigated. It was confirmed that the wire diameter of the central electrode has a significant effect on CO2 decomposition performance because it changes the nature of the discharge itself. A larger central electrode diameter is suitable for higher CO2 conversion rates The addition of Ar had a minimal effect on decomposition performance. A maximum conversion rate of 19.2 % was achieved by NS pulsed discharge, indicating the possibility of contributing to the reduction of CO2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Air pollution is associated with population growth and economic advancement. Severe cardiovascular complications that require extensive medical service are aggravated by air pollutants. This study illustrates the trend and correlation of cardiovascular disease hospital admission with air pollutants in Sabah for the past 9 years (2010-2019). The additional information obtained from this study will be useful to enhance proper environmental management and reduce air pollution in the cities of Sabah. METHODS: Ecological study design was utilized with cardiovascular disease hospital admission and ambient air pollutants in Sabah retrospective data. Data were collected from four districts with established continuous air quality monitoring stations. Collected data were analysed spatially and statistically. Autoregressive integrated moving average modelling was implemented to forecast the cardiovascular disease hospital admission. FINDINGS: Kota Kinabalu recorded the highest hospital admissions for cardiovascular disease, followed by Sandakan, Tawau and Keningau. The cardiovascular disease hospital admission prevalence rate in Kota Kinabalu was 12.45 per 1,000 population, followed by Sandakan, Tawau and Keningau (4.54; 4.18; and 5.88 per 1,000 population) in 2019. The cardiovascular hospital admissions increased in Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan and Tawau. The nitrogen dioxide (<0.04 ppm), carbon monoxide (<9 ppm), ozone (<0.05 ppm) and PM10 (<100 µg/m3) gases detected are below the national standard limit levels. In the later years of the series, the ozone and fine particulate gases intensify. Carbon monoxide has the highest positive correlation with cardiovascular disease hospital admission compared to other air pollutants. The autoregressive integrated moving average (0,1,1) with carbon monoxide and ozone as external regressors is the model with minimum Akaike information criterion. CONCLUSION: The carbon monoxide concentration in ambient air illustrates a potential risk for the increasing cardiovascular disease hospital admission number in Sabah.
