[Introduction] In order to realize the goal of "dual-carbon", the green and low-carbon transformation of power supply side is the key to realize the green and low-carbon transformation of Guangdong, and at the same time, the construction of a diversified power supply support system with a high proportion of new energy is also the most important task for achieving a new type of power system in Guangdong. Therefore, it is of great significance to plan the carbon neutral power supply structure of Guangdong in advance. [Method] Based on the study of the prospective energy supply and demand pattern of Guangdong Province, this paper integrated the low-carbon transformation and energy security, considered the constraints from the proportion of non-fossil energy consumption, resource conditions, and the balance of power supply, and proposed a carbon-neutral power supply development idea for Guangdong, analyzed different transformation paths, and put forward relevant suggestions. [Result] The study shows that during the period of carbon neutrality, the total installed capacities of power supply in Guangdong Province is expected to reach about three times of the current installed capacities; the main body of power supply will be transformed from the current combination of "thermal power + nuclear power + external power supply" to "new energy + nuclear power + external power supply"; The proportion of non-fossil energy installed capacity will reach 80%, of which the proportion of new energy resources in the province will reach 50%. [Conclusion] The prospect of power structure adjustment in Guangdong Province seems optimistic. However, this process still faces many challenges from policy, technology and market, etc. It is suggested to pay attention to the role change of thermal power in the power system, safeguard the key factors of non-fossil energy development, and emphasize the building of regulating capacity for new power system; in order to meet the demand for electricity consumption in Guangdong twice as much as the status quo during the period of carbon neutrality, it is even more important to pay special attention to technological innovation issues leading the clean and low-carbon transformation of power supply structures, and through scientific and technological innovation, to promote the exploration of new energy types and new energy technologies towards the development of greater energy density and more efficient energy conversion.

Abstract Waste activated sludge (WAS) is attracting attention for its energy and resource potential. Anaerobic digestion (AD) can be used to efficiently recover energy resources and stabilize pollutants in WAS, with biochar emerging as an ideal additive to boost this process. However, the low abundance of surface functional groups and small pore structure of raw biochar may limit its performance in the AD of WAS. These limitations can be overcome by using functional biochar. In this review, the preparation and modification methods for functional biochar and its role in the AD of WAS are systematically summarized and discussed. Notably, the role of functional biochar in electron transfer, buffering effects, microbial immobilization, alleviation of inhibitory effects, and functional microbial modulation are analyzed. Additionally, the impacts of biochar on digestate utilization, pollutant removal, and carbon fixation are discussed. Special attention is given to functional biochar for its ability to promote circular economy and carbon neutrality. Finally, future perspectives on the use of functional biochar in the AD of WAS are presented. The aim of this review is to provide insights into the application of functional biochar in the AD of WAS from the perspective of performance improvement, resource utilization, and circular economy. Although liquefaction technology has been extensively applied, plenty of biomass remains tainted with heavy metals (HMs). A meta-analysis of literature published from 2010 to 2023 was conducted to investigate the effects of liquefaction conditions and biomass characteristics on the remaining ratio and chemical speciation of HMs in biochar, aiming to achieve harmless treatment of biomass contaminated with HMs. The results showed that a liquefaction time of 1–3 h led to the largest HMs remaining ratio in biochar, with the mean ranging from 84.09% to 92.76%, compared with liquefaction times of less than 1 h and more than 3 h. Organic and acidic solvents liquefied biochar exhibited the greatest and lowest HMs remaining ratio. The effect of liquefaction temperature on HMs remaining ratio was not significant. The C, H, O, volatile matter, and fixed carbon contents of biomass were negatively correlated with the HMs remaining ratio, and N, S, and ash were positively correlated. In addition, liquefaction significantly transformed the HMs in biochar from bioavailable fractions (F1 and F2) to stable fractions (F3) (P < 0.05) when the temperature was increased to 280–330 ℃, with a liquefaction time of 1–3 h, and organic solvent as the liquefaction solvent. N and ash in biomass were positively correlated with the residue state (F4) of HMs in biochar and negatively correlated with F1 or F2, while H, O, fixed carbon, and volatile matter were negatively correlated with F4 but positively correlated with F3. Machine learning results showed that the contribution of biomass characteristics to HMs remaining ratio was higher than that of liquefaction factor. The most prominent contribution to the chemical speciation changes of HMs was the characteristics of HMs themselves, followed by ash content in biomass, liquefaction time, and C content. The findings of this meta-analysis contribute to factor selection, modification, and application of liquefied biomass to reducing risks.

Friction control is the most fundamental and important issue in the field of tribology. In recent years, friction control technology, which aims to reduce the energy loss in mechanical systems to address global environmental issues, has received significant attention. Friction control involves minimizing the friction coefficients and maintaining high frictional forces, such as in power transmissions and brakes. Surface texturing plays a crucial role in controlling the friction of tribological elements. In the future, technologies for active friction control at the interface between living organisms and artifacts will be indispensable for realizing a collaborative society with the coexistence of humans and robots. This article reviews the role and key findings of surface texturing and outlines its potential and future trends.

Passive house standard buildings (PHSBs), characterized by exceptional airtightness, present a promising technology for attaining carbon neutrality by 2060. The level of building airtightness is closely associated with air infiltration, which significantly impacts building energy consumption. However, there has been insufficient analysis of air infiltration in highly airtight buildings across diverse climatic regions. The present study involves the numerical simulation of the air infiltration rate (AIR) in an airtight building under varying design conditions during winter and summer, followed by a comprehensive analysis of the corresponding energy demand associated with air infiltration. The simulation results indicate that the building's AIR ranges from 125 to 423 m3/h, with an average of 189 m3/h under summer design conditions, and from 40 to 344 m3/h, with an average of 198 m3/h under winter design conditions. The statistical findings demonstrate distinct distribution patterns for AIR and energy demand across various climatic regions, exhibiting significant variations in values. The discussion emphasizes the substantial heating load associated with air infiltration, even at a building airtightness level of 0.5 h−1, highlighting the necessity of considering its impact in the design of highly airtight buildings. Furthermore, it is recommended to establish specific airtightness limits for buildings in different climatic regions of China. In the pursuit of carbon neutrality, state-owned forests are prime candidates for carbon offset projects due to their unique tenure and management characteristics. Employing methodologies endorsed by the International Panel on Climate Change and logistic growth curves, this study assesses the carbon stocks and sequestration potential of established state-owned plantation forests across 31 Chinese provinces from 2023 to 2060, encompassing seven forestry industry groups. This study projects that by 2060, these forests will amass a carbon stock of 558.25 MtC, with the highest stock in Northeast China (122.09 MtC) and the lowest in Northwest China (32.27 MtC), notably showing the highest growth rate at 91.15%. Over the forecast period, they are expected to accumulate a carbon sink of 637.07 MtCO2e, translating to an average annual carbon sink of 17.22 MtCO2e and an average annual carbon sink per unit of 1.41 tons of CO2 per hectare per year. Additionally, state-owned forests have the potential to offset approximately 0.15%–0.17% of annual carbon emissions, aligning with international climate goals. However, it is essential to note that the conversion of these carbon sinks into tradable carbon credits is subject to specific methodology requirements. Therefore, the future development of carbon offset projects in China's state-owned forests should consider the advancement of carbon market mechanisms, including the Chinese Certified Emission Reduction and the introduction of a carbon inclusion mechanism and natural forest methodology, to fully realize their potential contributions to carbon neutrality. Zn–CO2 batteries are excellent candidates for both electrical energy output and CO2 utilization, whereas the main challenge is to design electrocatalysts for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reactions with high selectivity and low cost. Herein, the three‐phase heterojunction Cu‐based electrocatalyst (Cu/Cu2O‐Sb2O3‐15) is synthesized and evaluated for highly selective CO2 reduction to CO, which shows the highest faradaic efficiency of 96.3% at −1.3 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, exceeding the previously reported best values for Cu‐based materials. In situ spectroscopy and theoretical analysis indicate that the Sb incorporation into the three‐phase heterojunction Cu/Cu2O‐Sb2O3‐15 nanomaterial promotes the formation of key *COOH intermediates compared with the normal Cu/Cu2O composites. Furthermore, the rechargeable aqueous Zn–CO2 battery assembled with Cu/Cu2O‐Sb2O3‐15 as the cathode harvests a peak power density of 3.01 mW cm−2 as well as outstanding cycling stability of 417 cycles. This research provides fresh perspectives for designing advanced cathodic electrocatalysts for rechargeable Zn–CO2 batteries with high‐efficient electricity output together with CO2 utilization. Waste fats and oils contain many toxic and harmful components, and the number of waste fats and oils discharged each year at home and abroad is huge. The production of second-generation biodiesel from waste oils and fats is an effective way to curb "toxic oil," which is of great significance to reduce carbon emissions, improve atmospheric quality and ecological environment, increase the proportion of green and clean fuel applications, and achieve carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. At present, the production of second-generation biodiesel at home and abroad is mainly carried out by the fixed-bed hydrogenation process, but the fixed-bed hydrogenation process still has some problems and limitations in terms of raw materials, catalysts, and production processes. To address the shortcomings of the fixed-bed hydrogenation process for the production of second-generation biodiesel, this paper proposes a new combined process of suspended-bed hydrogenation and fixed-bed hydrogenation. The results show that the new combined suspended-bed hydrogenation-fixed-bed hydrogenation process can solve the problems and limitations of the conventional fixed-bed hydrogenation process and has unique technical advantages, with the yield of the second-generation biodiesel product > 80%, which is 10–15% higher than that of the conventional fixed-bed hydrogenation process. The quality index of the product meets the EU standard BS EN 15,940 and can realize the waste oil and grease "eat up and squeeze clean," with remarkable economic and social benefits. The new process of producing second-generation biodiesel from waste oils and fats is a green and efficient technology for the continuous conversion of waste oils and fats into renewable energy, which is conducive to the promotion of a circular economy and meets the requirements of the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) for sustainable development. Low or even zero carbon dioxide emissions will be an essential requirement for energy supplies in the near future. Besides transport and electricity generation, industry is another large carbon emitter. Hydrogen produced by renewable energy provides a flexible way of utilizing that energy. Hydrogen, as an energy carrier, could be stored in a large capacity compared to electricity. In Sweden, hydrogen will be used to replace coal for steel production. This paper discusses how the need for electricity to produce hydrogen will affect the electricity supply and power flow in the Swedish power grid, and whether it will result in increased emissions in other regions. Data of the Swedish system will be used to study the feasibility of implementing the hydrogen system from the power system viewpoint, and discuss the electricity price and emission issues caused by the hydrogen production in different scenarios. This paper concludes that the Swedish power grid is feasible for accommodating the additional electricity capacity requirement of producing green hydrogen for the steel industry. • A high-temperature heat pump steam system using single-screw compressor that recovers industrial waste heat to produce steam at 170 °C is proposed. • The feasibility and reliability of replacing a coal-fired boiler with a high-temperature heat pump steam system was evaluated using a 4E analysis. • A more advanced economic analysis model is proposed in the 4E analysis, which considers the recovery value of waste heat and CO 2 trading prices. Industrial steam is widely recognized as a valuable form of heat currency, possessing considerable social and economic significance. As the industry shifts to low carbon emissions, there is an urgent need to reduce CO 2 emissions from industrial steam generation. The analysis of a high-temperature heat pump steam system (HTHPSS), which recovers industrial waste heat to produce high-temperature steam at 170 °C, includes evaluations of its energy, exergy, economic, and environmental (4E) to determine whether it can replace a coal-fired boiler. The economic analysis considered the recovery value of waste heat and the effect of CO 2 trading prices. Optimization calculations were performed to investigate changes in the waste heat temperature and condenser outlet temperature. The study also offers recommendations for operational conditions and optimization strategies for the HTHPSS. The results indicate a positive correlation between the system coefficient of performance (COP) and the waste heat utilization rate with waste heat temperature and condenser outlet temperature. The maximum COP value is 2.73. The total exergy efficiency initially increases and then decreases as waste heat temperature increases. It also decreases as the condenser outlet temperature increases, reaching a peak value of 43.26 %. The waste heat temperature needs to be at least 59 °C to generate a net profit, with a corresponding payback period (PBP) of 4.40 years. The minimum PBP is 0.03 years, independent of waste heat temperature. The annual emission reduction increases as waste heat temperature increases and decreases as condenser outlet temperature increases. These results indicate that a HTHPSS could replace a coal-fired boiler and offer guidance for design optimization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Urban areas play a crucial role in carbon absorption, while also producing a considerable amount of carbon emissions. However, there has been a lack of research that has systematically examined the carbon storage and sequestration in green spaces located within urban environments, at a spatial scale. This study analyzes carbon storage and sequestration in Yurim Park, Daejeon, South Korea on a grid basis to fill the research gap. The research compares the variation in sequestration capacity across different grids and provides insights into the development of sustainable urban parks in urban planning. The classification of grids is based on specific site characteristics, such as land cover, tree distribution, type, and density. This results in a total of seven distinct types. The study employs a combination of the I-tree eco model, drone-based modeling, and on-site surveys to estimate carbon storage and sequestration in urban parks. The results show that the average carbon storage per unit area in the entire park was 15.3 tons of carbon per hectare, ranging from a minimum of 5.0 to a maximum of 21.4 tons per hectare. For the planted area, the average carbon storage was 8.6 tons per hectare. Grids with green areas dominated by broad-leaved trees and closed canopy cover had the highest carbon sequestration and storage values. The planting area ratio and the type of trees planted were found to directly influence the carbon sequestration capacity per unit area of urban parks. This study stands out from previous research by conducting a detailed area-based comparison and analysis of carbon sequestration capacity in urban parks using sophisticated measurement techniques. We constructed an integrated system comprising direct air capture (DAC) and direct carbonate reduction (DCR) to facilitate the industrial implementation of negative CO2 emissions. The DAC-DCR system demonstrated continuous CO synthesis from ambient air at room temperature, in contrast to conventional methods, including high-temperature processes and previously reported a batch-type method that connect DAC and DCR. The CO2-absorbing electrolyte, a K2CO3-KHCO3 aqueous solution, is circulated between the DAC and DCR subsystems. The CO2 captured from the air with the CO2-absorbing electrolyte is converted to carbonate in the DAC; subsequently, the carbonate is electrochemically reduced to CO in the DCR. This system monitored the CO2 capture rate, carbonate reduction rate, and pH of the CO2-absorbing electrolyte in real time. Controlling the carbonate reduction rate by adjusting the DCR reactor current enabled the balancing of carbon capture and carbonate reduction rates. Consequently, stable and continuous operation of a DAC-DCR system was achieved for over one hour for the first time. The DAC-DCR is more suitable for combination with intermittent renewable electricity, including photovoltaic and wind electricity, than the previous methods because all the processes in the system work at room temperature. Thus, the present proof-of-concept study is an important step toward the widespread use of DAC.

Water utilities are affected by various social, environmental, and technological factors and are increasingly required to enhance their infrastructure and long-term efficiency. Performance indicators are useful tools for assessing the operational, financial, environmental, and social aspects of water systems. Given this background, the author reviewed the literature on performance indicators for the water sector and summarized the research trends as follows. As a perspective, there are a lot of good mathematical and theoretical studies on distribution pipes and leakage management. Future research should address the problems of water utilities, by using multiple levels of performance indicators including social and environmental context in the long term. Asset management and utility management studies address diverse and current problems faced by water utilities. However, there is still room for improvement in standardizing the methodology for data collection, processing, and integration. In addition, it is recommended for future research, to include carbon neutrality aspect, to include pipeline materials and soil information in leakage management, to extend asset management studies to treatment plants, with including additional indicators about human and financial resources. HIGHLIGHTS Societal and environmental conditions need to be considered in future studies.; A long-term perspective is needed for leakage management.; Asset management research should be extended to treatment plants.; Utility management research needs standardization of methodology.; Environmental aspect is essential to achieve carbon neutrality for water utilities.;

The global resurgence of hydrogen as a clean energy source, particularly green hydrogen derived from renewable energy, is pivotal for achieving a carbon-neutral future. However, scalability poses a significant challenge. This research proposes innovative business models leveraging the low-emission property of green hydrogen to reduce its financial costs, thereby fostering its widespread adoption. Key components of the business workflow are elaborated, mathematical formulations of market parameters are derived, and case studies are presented to demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of these models. Results demonstrate that the substantial costs associated with the current hydrogen industry can be effectively subsidized via the implementation of proposed business models. When the carbon emission price falls within the range of approximately 86–105 USD/ton, free access to hydrogen becomes a viable option for end-users. Objective: This study recalculates the carbon emissions of urban and rural residents in China, analyzing the dynamic evolution trends of urban and rural carbon emissions. It explores the spatial spillover effects centered around the inequality in carbon emissions between urban and rural areas. Methods: The study calculates the carbon emissions of urban and rural residents in each province based on the IPCC method. Non- parametric kernel density estimation is employed to depict the dynamic evolution characteristics of national, urban, and rural carbon emissions. The Theil Index is used to measure the disparities in urban and rural carbon emissions in major strategic regions, further applying the Theil Index to evaluate the inequality of urban and rural carbon emissions across provinces. This helps identify the driving factors affecting the inequality of urban and rural carbon emissions and their spatiotemporal effects. Finding: Carbon emissions from urban and rural residents in China present a divergent development pattern. Urban emissions have increased, with interprovincial disparities widening; rural emissions tend to stabilize, with slight growth in inter-provincial gaps. The overall inequality of carbon emissions in various regions of China experiences a three-phase journey of rise, decline, and stabilization. Urban inequality first increases then decreases, while rural inequality gradually lessens, showing clear regional and urban-rural differences. Market and government factors significantly impact the inequality of urban and rural carbon emissions. The development of the digital economy aids in reducing inequality and generates significant spatial spillover effects. The relationship between economic development level and carbon emission inequality is U-shaped. Industrial structure optimization can reduce urban-rural inequality, but its spatial spillover effect is not significant. Government intervention has limited effects, while environmental regulations may increase inequality. To contribute to achieving zero environmental impact, NTT Space Environment and Energy Laboratories is engaged in research and development of new forms of energy, efficient and resilient energy transport, and effective absorption and conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2). This article introduces virtual energy demand/supply control technology that makes the most effective use of renewable energy, next-generation energy supply technology that uses a direct current (DC) grid using reliable DC power supply, and oceanic CO2 reduction technology that uses the ocean food chain, which will all contribute to achieving carbon neutrality. The formulation of long-term step-by-step emission reduction plan is an important step for effective scientific emission reduction. This paper takes Shanghai as the research object, constructs PSO-LSTM model on the basis of STIRPAT model, and further constructs three dynamic policy scenarios combined with China's actual situation and makes short-, medium-, and long-term multivariate predictions for them. The study finds that only the improvement of energy consumption structure has a promotion effect on carbon emission reduction, and urbanization, industrial structure, technology level, population, and economic level all have an increasing effect, and secondly, the carbon emission reduction path of Shanghai basically achieves the core objective of steady decrease under the three scenarios. Secondly, under the three scenarios, Shanghai's carbon emission reduction path basically achieves the core objective of steady decline, but the decline in the GU scenario is more significant. It is recommended that Shanghai further adjusts its industrial structure, optimizes its energy consumption structure, promotes technological innovation and progress, and promotes the development of the circular economy model. This study establishes a connection between existing literature on corporate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) matters, information disclosure, and green bonds by employing the issuance of green bonds to indicate investors' acknowledgment of a company's sustainable activities. Prior research has not adequately addressed the relationship between ESG performance, disclosure, and green bond issuance. A novel dataset has been compiled by merging ESG performance and information disclosure data of Chinese‐listed companies spanning from 2016 to 2020, alongside green bond issuance information from the Wind and Hexun databases. Concurrently, China's pursuit of carbon neutrality necessitates the establishment of a green, low‐carbon, and circular economy framework. ESG has surfaced as an indispensable instrument for appraising a company's sustainability and advocating the enhancement of its information disclosure systems, thereby aiding investors in forming well‐informed judgments. This study scrutinizes the correlation between each facet of ESG performance, disclosure, and green bond issuance, from the perspective of companies listed in emerging markets. The findings corroborate that companies exhibiting commendable ESG practices are more predisposed to issuing green bonds, particularly when such practices are suitably disclosed. The identified evidence will spur the enforcement of obligatory ESG disclosure regulations, further propelling China's advancement in ecological civilization and green finance. In order to better understand the impact of trade openness and foreign direct investment (FDI) on carbon neutrality (economic growth without increasing carbon emissions), linear fully modified ordinary least squares model and non‐linear panel threshold regression model are applied to explore the impact of trade openness and FDI on economic growth and carbon emissions in 114 countries. The results of the Tapio decoupling model showed that the decoupling between economic growth and carbon emissions is an M‐shaped from 2002‐2015, and a strong decoupling exists between them after 2015. The results from the linear model showed that FDI promotes both economic growth and carbon emissions. Trade openness promotes economic growth, but curbs the increase in carbon emissions. In other word, trade openness contributes to economic without increasing carbon emissions, which is conducive to achieving carbon neutrality. The results of the non‐linear model showed that when FDI crosses the threshold, the effect of FDI on economic growth first promotes and then inhibits and then promotes, the effect of FDI on promoting carbon emissions first increases and then decreases. When trade openness crosses the threshold, the promotion effect of trade openness on economic growth increases, while the inhibitory effect of trade openness on carbon emissions decreases. Wood chipboard, common in interior spaces for applications ranging from furniture to decorative panelling, often falls short due to the presence of toxic adhesives, posing risks to both human health and the environment. This research delves into the potential transformation of wood chipboard into a 100% bio-based product. Previous research has shown the possibility of the partial replacement of petrochemical-based adhesives with bio-based adhesives. Hence, previous results do not reach the policy ambitions of the Green Deal of making the Green Transition to a bio-based economy. For chipboard production, logging residues from Latvian State Forests were systematically gathered within two months post-logging, comprising primarily Picea abies and Pinus sylvestris biomass, including branches, needles, bark, and various particles. A custom chipper and Vibrotehnik PM-120 hammer mill were employed for particle size separation into three fractions via sieving: <2.8 mm, 2.8–8 mm, and 8.0–10.0 mm, and combined with binders and hot-pressed into board samples. As a result, particle boards containing 100% bio-based carbon were achieved, demonstrating the possibility of excluding petroleum adhesives from chipboard production, paving the way for new research exploring bio-based binders and conifer bark. In recent years, the amount of the photovoltaic (PV) system has been rapidly increasing from the viewpoint of carbon neutral. There are concerns about voltage rises and grid congestion in the electrical distribution network because of large‐scale PV increases. In order to address these issues, we focused on the control of water supply pumps in the water distribution system, which is infrastructure equipment for consumers. By controlling the start/stop of the water pump, it is expected to contribute to the power distribution system by increasing Demand Response (DR) and reduce CO2 emission from the electricity used by the pump. In this paper, with the aim of constructing an optimal operation planning method for water pumps that can evaluate DR and CO2 reduction effects, the optimal operation plan is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming problem. India is an agricultural country and near about 500 MT of agricultural wastes are generated each year. India has huge reserves of low-grade iron ore fines. Therefore, considering the availability of these two, the present study mainly focuses on utilization of solid waste in iron and steel industry; also, biomass being carbon-neutral fuel, promotes mitigation of environmental issues. To carry out this study, agricultural wastes like groundnut shell and corn cob which contain more than 70% of volatile matter were considered. Hence, an attempt has been taken to utilize this volatiles as well as char (prepared at 350°C) of corn cob and groundnut shell as a reducing agent for reduction of iron ore pellets. Maximum reduction percentage was achieved at 1000°C and 75 min using corn cob as a reductant, i.e. 78.38% with its volatile and 92.01% using its char. Higher intensity of elemental iron is also reflected by X-ray Diffraction analysis of reduced pellets. Further, cost estimation of reduction of iron ore pellets was also done using both the reducing agents, which signifies that the reduction process using biomass volatiles is much more economical than biochar. The total cost of producing DRI from corn cob volatiles is 56% less than coal followed by groundnut shell volatiles 53.36% and minimum in the case of groundnut shell char 36.17%. Abstract Zn–CO2 batteries are excellent candidates for both electrical energy output and CO2 utilization, whereas the main challenge is to design electrocatalysts for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reactions with high selectivity and low cost. Herein, the three‐phase heterojunction Cu‐based electrocatalyst (Cu/Cu2O‐Sb2O3‐15) is synthesized and evaluated for highly selective CO2 reduction to CO, which shows the highest faradaic efficiency of 96.3% at −1.3 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, exceeding the previously reported best values for Cu‐based materials. In situ spectroscopy and theoretical analysis indicate that the Sb incorporation into the three‐phase heterojunction Cu/Cu2O‐Sb2O3‐15 nanomaterial promotes the formation of key *COOH intermediates compared with the normal Cu/Cu2O composites. Furthermore, the rechargeable aqueous Zn–CO2 battery assembled with Cu/Cu2O‐Sb2O3‐15 as the cathode harvests a peak power density of 3.01 mW cm−2 as well as outstanding cycling stability of 417 cycles. This research provides fresh perspectives for designing advanced cathodic electrocatalysts for rechargeable Zn–CO2 batteries with high‐efficient electricity output together with CO2 utilization.

Forest is the largest carbon reservoir and carbon absorber on earth. Thus, mapping forest cover change accurately is of great significance to achieving the global carbon neutrality goal. Accurate forest change information could be acquired by deep learning methods using high-resolution remote sensing images. However, deforestation detection based on deep learning on a large-scale region with high-resolution images required huge computational resources. Therefore, there was an urgent need for a fast and accurate deforestation detection model. In this study, we proposed an interesting but effective re-parameterization deforestation detection model, named RepDDNet. Unlike other existing models designed for deforestation detection, the main feature of RepDDNet was its decoupling feature, which means that it allowed the multi-branch structure in the training stages to be converted into a plain structure in the inference stage, thus the computation efficiency can be significantly improved in the inference stage while maintaining the accuracy unchanged. A large-scale experiment was carried out in Ankang city with 2-meter high-resolution remote sensing images (the total area of it was over 20,000 square kilometers), and the result indicated that the model computation efficiency could be improved by nearly 30% compared with the model without re-parameterization. Additionally, compared with other lightweight models, RepDDNet also displayed a trade-off between accuracy and computation efficiency.

The spatiotemporal distribution of ecosystem service values (ESVs) and ecological risk are critical indicators to represent the regional ecological protection level and potential of sustainable development, which largely depend on land-use patterns. Aiming to contribute to global climate mitigation, China has proposed dual-carbon goals that would remarkably influence the land-use/cover change (LUCC) distribution. Based on the Landsat land cover data of 2000, 2010 and 2020 and multisource satellite products, several driving factors are integrated into the patch-generating land use simulation (PLUS) model to simulate future LUCC patterns for the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) under rapid urbanization, cropland protection and carbon neutral (CN) scenarios from 2020 to 2050. Spatial–temporal ecosystem service and ESVs are allocated using INVEST and the equivalent factor method and thus ecological risks are evaluated using the entropy method. Results indicate that forest growth is the largest under the CN scenario, especially in the northwestern and northeastern GBA, exceeding 25,800 km2 in 2050, which results in both the highest habitat quality and carbon storage. The largest ESVs, reaching higher than 5210 yuan/pixel, are found in the CN scenario, particularly expanding toward the suburban area, leading to the lowest ecological risks. From 2020 to 2050, habitat quality, carbon storage and ESVs improve, while ecological risks decline in the CN scenario. With global climate change looming large, there is an urgent need for China's energy sector to take steps towards carbon neutrality. This study aims to explore how digital technologies can contribute to the pathway for China's energy sector to achieve carbon neutrality. By analyzing carbon neutrality policies and digital technology applications, we propose a systematic pathway framework to guide China's energy sector in integrating digital technology to accelerate the pace of achieving carbon neutrality in the energy sector. We first review the current status of carbon emissions and carbon neutrality targets in China's energy sector, and in light of the development trend of modern digital technologies, we propose key application areas for digital technologies in realizing carbon neutrality in the energy sector. Second, we detail the specific applications and effects of digital technologies in energy supply side optimization, energy utilization efficiency improvement, carbon sink management, and smart grid construction. Through theoretical modeling and empirical analysis, we demonstrate the great potential of digital technologies in carbon emission reduction and carbon neutrality in the energy sector and reveal the key role of digital technologies in carbon–neutral pathways. Finally, we propose effective technology implementation measures and point out important challenges and solution paths for digital technologies in carbon–neutral practices. This study provides a scientific basis and guidance for China's energy sector to achieve carbon neutrality with the help of digital technologies and promotes the important steps towards carbon neutrality in China. The global aviation sector must reduce its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to achieve its 2050 net‐zero emissions target. Although the current pathway to the target considers an increase in aviation demand following the COVID‐19 pandemic, emissions can be offset by the introduction of future technologies such as electric and hydrogen aircraft and sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). However, the commercialization of these future technologies is uncertain. In this study, we explore the feasible pathways for achieving the 2050 target in Japan. Specifically, we compare non‐future technology pathways, such as improving fuel efficiency and controlling flight distance and aircraft lifespan, with future technology pathways, such as introducing SAF. The results showed that the non‐future technology pathway would require up to 27% suppression of cumulative flight distances by 2050 relative to the predicted flight distance if only improving fuel efficiency and controlling flight distance and aircraft lifetimes. Minimizing the cumulative cost of the target achievement is contingent upon maximizing fuel efficiency and aircraft life extension. Additionally, the target achievement requires switching domestic flights to railway transport and limiting international flights for leisure, as well as increasing fares by up to 48% to compensate for sale declines. Many nations across the globe have incorporated carbon neutrality into their national agendas to see a more sustainable world. The basic sustainable journey is to find the equilibrium between the people, the environment and the economy. By conceptualizing inclusive carbon-neutral electrification, countries may achieve their aspiration at both the macro and micro levels. Macro national energy transition policies emphasized centralized technological shifts for grid systems and in many cases neglected rural communities. Some argued that Borneo's disparity in socioeconomic status was due to a lack of electrification. Hence, this paper explored the decentralized community-based electrification potential through a micro hydropower initiative. Such technologies encourage watershed management and are closely related to the Tagal communities' heritage. The paper explored the complex problem with the multihelix approach to examine each actor's aspirations and concerns. Actors underwent a series of interviews based on five key aspects of sustainable rural electrification. By integrating multicriteria analysis (MCA), the qualitative research data were analyzed to find gaps for implementation. Taking an industrial park as an example, this study aims to analyze the characteristics of a distribution network that incorporates distributed energy resources (DERs). The study begins by summarizing the key features of a distribution network with DERs based on recent power usage data. To predict and analyze the load growth of the industrial park, an improved back-propagation algorithm is employed. Furthermore, the study classifies users within the industrial park according to their specific power consumption and supply requirements. This user segmentation allows for the introduction of three constraints: node voltage, wire current, and capacity of DERs. By incorporating these constraints, the study constructs an optimization model for the distribution network in the industrial park, with the objective of minimizing the total operation and maintenance cost. The primary goal of these optimizations is to address the needs of DERs connected to the distribution network, while simultaneously mitigating their potential adverse impact on the network. This article discusses the changes in carbon productivity and economic growth patterns in China. We calculated carbon productivity using panel data from BRICS and G7 countries between 2001 and 2019 and developed a methodology to estimate economic growth patterns by combining carbon productivity and economic growth. As the world's top carbon emitter, China can combat global climate change by increasing carbon productivity. We show that (i) China has a high growth rate of carbon productivity; however, the carbon productivity level only accounts for about 20% of developed countries. (ii) When determining economic growth patterns from a low-carbon perspective, China has transitioned from high-carbon type II to low-carbon type III. However, low-carbon economic growth is common in developed countries, and (iii) it can improve carbon productivity by reducing energy-averaged carbon emission factors. Controlling building carbon emissions (CEs) is key to achieving the goal of carbon neutrality. Residential blocks are the main contributors of buildings' carbon emissions and intensity, and thus can be manipulated to achieve carbon neutrality. This work aimed to evaluate the building carbon emissions intensity (CEI) levels of residential blocks using Rhino and Grasshopper and to quantify the relationship between the block form parameters and a building's carbon emissions (CEs). Firstly, 48 cases were selected by stratified sampling, and they were classified by architectural typology. Secondly, the residential block morphological parameters and building carbon emissions were calculated. Thirdly, the relationship between the block form parameters and the building's CE was quantified using statistical methods. Lastly, low-carbon planning strategies for residential blocks under the target of carbon neutrality were proposed. The findings showed that the influence of the block form parameters on a building's CE was 31.66%. A building's shape factor has a positive influence on its CE, and the floor area ratio, building volume–site area ratio, and building height have negative influences on its CE. A building's shape factor, cover ratio, and surface–site area ratio synergistically impact its CE. The weight of a building's shape factor on its carbon emissions was 3.84 times that of its cover ratio and 4.46 times that of its surface–site area ratio. The technology workflow proposed in this study can provide data in support of carbon emissions assessments and low-carbon planning strategies for urban blocks in other cities in China and worldwide.
