We perform large-scale atomistic simulations of a system containing 12 × 106 atoms, comprising an oxygen gas-filled bubble immersed in water, to understand the stability and cavitation induced by ultrasound. First, we propose a method to construct a bubble/water system. For a given bubble radius, the pressure inside the bubble is estimated using the Young–Laplace equation. Then, this pressure is used as a reference for a constant temperature, constant pressure simulation of an oxygen system, enabling us to extract a sphere of oxygen gas and place it into a cavity within an equilibrated water box. This ensures that the Young–Laplace equation is satisfied and the bubble is stable in water. Second, this stable bubble is used for ultrasound-induced cavitation simulations. We demonstrate that under weak ultrasound excitation, the bubble undergoes stable cavitation, revealing various fluid velocity patterns, including the first-order velocity field and microstreaming. These fluid patterns emerge around the bubble on a nanometer scale within a few nanoseconds, a phenomenon challenging to observe experimentally. With stronger ultrasound intensities, the bubble expands significantly and then collapses violently. The gas core of the collapsed bubble, measuring 3–4 nm, exhibits starfish shapes with temperatures around 1500 K and pressures around 6000 bar. The simulation results are compared with those from Rayleigh–Plesset equation modeling, showing good agreement. Coated microbubbles are widely used in medical applications, particularly in enhanced drug and gene delivery. One of the mechanisms underlying these applications involves the shear stress exerted on the cell membrane by acoustic microstreaming generated through cavitation bubbles. In this study, we develop a novel simulation approach that combines the smooth dissipative particle dynamics (SDPD) simulation method with numerical modeling of the Rayleigh–Plesset-like equation in an ad hoc manner to simulate stable cavitation of microbubbles at microsecond and micrometer scales. Specifically, the SDPD method is utilized to model fluid dynamics, while the Rayleigh–Plesset-like equation is employed to describe bubble dynamics. Adopting a 1.5 μm coated microbubble driven by ultrasound with a frequency of 2 MHz and a pressure of 500 kPa as a representative example, we observe a high-velocity microstreaming pattern emerging around the bubble on a very small scale of a few micrometers after only a few microseconds. These spatiotemporal scales may pose challenges for experimental observation. The formation of this microstreaming arises from the opposing motion of the fluid layer next to the bubble and the fluid layers further away. Furthermore, our simulations reveal high shear stress levels of thousands of Pascals exerted on a wall located a few micrometers from the bubble. This contrasts with the shear stress values of a few Pascals calculated from theoretical models in the literature, which do not incorporate radial streaming into their theories. Humpback leading-edge (LE) tubercles are applied to the cavitation control of hydrofoils, and the effect of LE tubercles on hydrofoil cavitation characteristics under different cavitation numbers (σ) is discussed. The results show that LE tubercles can promote hydrofoil initial cavitation, with cavitation appearing first in the groove. This is because the separation effect of LE tubercles induces flow from peak to trough, resulting in an accelerated flow rate and a local low-pressure area. The quasiperiodic properties of the cloud-cavitation stage are not improved, but LE tubercles considerably reduced hydrofoil cavitation, resulting in a cavitation volume reduction of roughly 16.5%–20.4% and maximum cavitation volume reduction of roughly 10.5%–21.8%. The flow field at the tubercle was analyzed, and it was found that vortex cavitation was induced by the spiral vortex. The pressure pulsation on the hydrofoil is highly related to the cavitating evolution. The dominant frequency of the pressure pulsation increases with the decrease of σ and is not affected by the LE tubercles. Finally, LE tubercles are observed to facilitate the transformation of laminar flow to turbulent flow, hence increasing wake disturbance and facilitating the disintegration of the wake vortex structure. In this paper, the super-cavitating phenomenon under the effect of two vehicles' encounter motion processes is numerically studied. Particular attention is given to the influence of the vertical gaps between the vehicle, the cavitation number, and the slenderness ratio on the cavity profile and radial force of the object. Several numerical models are built to study the cavity evolution process and the force acting on the vehicle to explore the influence mechanism of two vehicles' encounter motion on supercavitating flow. The study shows that the cavity around the vehicle is primarily affected by the vertical gaps and cavitation number, but is relatively weakly affected by the slenderness ratio. Several impact laws are acquired in the paper. The relationship between cavity fracture time and vertical gaps is approximately a power function and obeys the law of t = 5.433h0.3688. The concept of the time of the maximum radial force occurrence and the cavitation number follows the formula of t = 4.86e0.3688σ. The relationship between the maximum radial force occurrence position and the cavitation number is a function of Ln and consistent with the law n = −0.799ln(σ) + 8.427. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Amorphous solids are known to fail catastrophically via fracture, and cavitation at nano-metric scales is known to play a significant role in such a failure process. Micro-alloying via inclusions is often used as a means to increase the fracture toughness of amorphous solids. Modeling such inclusions as randomly pinned particles that only move affinely and do not participate in plastic relaxations, we study how the pinning influences the process of cavitation-driven fracture in an amorphous solid. Using extensive numerical simulations and probing in the athermal quasistatic limit, we show that just by pinning a very small fraction of particles, the tensile strength is increased, and also the cavitation is delayed. Furthermore, the cavitation that is expected to be spatially heterogeneous becomes spatially homogeneous by forming a large number of small cavities instead of a dominant cavity. The observed behavior is rationalized in terms of screening of plastic activity via the pinning centers, characterized by a screening length extracted from the plastic-eigenmodes. Most ultrasound-based processes root in empirical approaches. Because nearly all advances have been conducted in aqueous systems, there exists a paucity of information on sonoprocessing in other solvents, particularly ionic liquids (ILs). In this work, we modelled an ultrasonic horn-type sonoreactor and investigated the effects of ultrasound power, sonotrode immersion depth, and solvents thermodynamic properties on acoustic cavitation in nine imidazolium-based and three pyrrolidinium-based ILs. The model accounts for bubbles, acoustic impedance mismatch at interfaces, and treats the ILs as incompressible, Newtonian, and saturated with argon. Following a statistical analysis of the simulation results, we determined that viscosity and ultrasound input power are the most significant variables affecting the intensity of the acoustic pressure field (P), the volume of cavitation zones (V), and the magnitude of the maximum acoustic streaming surface velocity (u). V and u increase with the increase of ultrasound input power and the decrease in viscosity, whereas the magnitude of negative P decreases as ultrasound power and viscosity increase. Probe immersion depth positively correlates with V, but its impact on P and u is insignificant. 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium-based ILs yielded the largest V and the fastest acoustic jets - 0.77 cm3 and 24.4 m s-1 for 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride at 60 W. 1-methyl-3-(3-sulfopropyl)-imidazolium-based ILs generated the smallest V and lowest u - 0.17 cm3 and 1.7 m s-1 for 1-methyl-3-(3-sulfopropyl)-imidazolium p-toluene sulfonate at 20 W. The utilization of ultrasound imaging has become extensively prevalent and well‐established in clinical practice. The fundamental technologies that serve as the foundation for various applications in the field include transducers, beam shaping, pulse compression, tissue harmonic imaging, contrast agents, methodologies for quantifying blood flow and tissue motion, and three‐dimensional imaging. This article focuses on the examination of ultrasonic propagation, which involves the transmission of mechanical vibrations within the molecules or particles of a material. It quantifies the velocity of sound propagation in the medium of air. The third‐order nonlinear M‐fractional Westervelt model has been used as a governing model in the imaging process for securing the different wave structures. The recently developed computational methods have been applied in this study. The different wave structures are secured in various forms of solitary wave solutions including bright, dark, and combo solitons. In the domains of medical imaging and therapy, the investigation of sound wave propagation and high‐amplitude phenomena is facilitated by the utilization of wave structures. The effectiveness of these solutions extends to acoustic cavitation, acoustic levitation, underwater acoustics, and facilitating the process of ultrasonic propagation in tissue. Ultrasound imaging technologies currently find application in the medical field, enabling the visualization and examination of internal human tissue. This technology exhibits a wide array of applications in the fields of industry and medicine. A representation of the graphs is produced using the appropriate parametric values. The results suggest that the chosen approaches exhibit effectiveness, viability, and adaptability when implemented in complex systems in various fields, with particular emphasis on ultrasonic imaging. Understanding xylem embolism formation is challenging due to dynamic changes and multiphase interactions in conduits. Here, we hypothesise that embolism spread involves gas diffusion in xylem, and is affected by time. We measured hydraulic conductivity (Kh) in flow‐centrifuge experiments over 1 h at a given pressure and temperature for stem samples of three angiosperm species. Temporal changes in Kh at 5, 22, and 35°C, and at various pressures were compared to modelled gas concentration changes in a recently embolised vessel in the centre of a centrifuge sample. Temporal changes in Kh were logarithmic and species‐specific. Maximum relative increases of Kh between 6% and 40% happened at 22°C for low centrifugal speed (<3250 RPM), while maximum decreases between 41% and 61% occurred at higher speeds. These reductions in Kh were experimentally shown to be associated with a temporal increase of embolism at the centre of centrifuge samples, which was likely associated with gas concentration increases in recently embolized vessels. Although embolism is mostly pressure‐driven, our experimental and modelled data indicate that time, conduit characteristics, and temperature are involved due to their potential role in gas diffusion. Gas diffusion, however, does not seem to cover the entire process of embolism spread. Summary Statement: Based on flow‐centrifuge experiments and modelling, we found that embolism formation is not only driven by pressure, but also involves gas movement, which is affected by time, temperature, and vessel anatomy. The characteristics of water treated with cavitation-assisted electric discharge plasma have been studied. In the discharge itself, hydroxyl radicals and hydrogen and oxygen atoms are generated. With the cyclic passage of water through the discharge area, secondary products are formed that have oxidizing, reducing, and slightly alkaline properties. The yield of oxidizing and reducing agents was measured depending on the dose (total energy) deposited in the discharge. The results obtained give reason to assume that during the cyclic treatment of water with the cavitation-assisted discharge, octaoxidane H2O8 is formed in the liquid. Low-intensity histotripsy (LIH) is a novel and safe technique for tissue ablation. This study aimed to explore the effects of LIH on canine prostate tissue and identify the degree of acute injury to the gland. We constructed and evaluated two types of acoustically responsive droplet (ARD) emulsions using either perfluoropentane (PFP) with a lipid shell or perfluoromethyl-cyclopentane (PFMCP) with lauromacrogol (L) injection. Twenty beagles were assigned to four experimental groups: ultrasound (US) + PFP (n = 6), US + PFMCP-L (n = 6), PFMCP-L (n = 5) and PFP (n = 3). The ARDs were injected transcutaneously and transabdominally into normal canine prostates under US-guided imaging. Subsequently, focused therapeutic US was employed to induce acoustic droplet vaporization and bubble cloud cavitation. The mechanical damage to canine prostate tissue was evaluated using gross and histological examination. Gross specimens showed that the injured area was dark brown. Hematoxylin and eosin-stained tissue sections of the damage zone showed significant cavity formation and interstitial edema. The total tissue damage scores in the US + PFP group were compared to those of the other three experimental groups. No statistically significant differences were observed in the extent of tissue damage and total scores among the US + PFMCP-L, PFMCP-L and PFP groups. We achieved significant mechanical tissue damage in the canine prostate using PFP ARD-based LIH that proved to be superior to that using PFMCP ARDs with LIH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The waterjet propulsor is a new type of marine propulsion system, which offers the advantages of high speed, good maneuverability, and low vibration and noise. As the core component of the waterjet propulsor, the primary role of the waterjet pump is to provide sufficient thrust for the vessel. However, the waterjet pump is prone to be troubled by the hump phenomenon. As the pump operates in the hump region, it may encounter issues such as flow interference and exacerbated vibration and noise, which are closely related to cavitation phenomenon in the pump. To analyze the evolution of cavitation flow structure in the waterjet pump when operating in the hump region, this study utilized highspeed photography to obtain the cavitation flow structure at different cavitation development stages under the hump peak condition. The cavitation stages involved include the cavitation inception stage, cavitation development transition stage, first critical cavitation stage, critical cavitation stage, and breakdown cavitation stage. During different cavitation development stages under the hump peak condition, the blade tip region exhibits distinct cloud cavitation induced by the tip leakage vortex (TLV). As the NPSH decreases, the frequency of cloud cavitation shedding increases, the scale of the cavitation cloud at the leading edge of the blade decreases, and the scale of the cavitation cloud accumulated at the rear of the flow passage increases. This study on the cavitation flow of the waterjet pump is significant as it contributes to enhancing the anti-cavitation performance and reducing vibration and noise. Rotating cavitation water jet technology is widely used in many industrial fields such as pipeline cleaning, unblocking, cutting, etc. To more accurately analyse the flow characteristics of rotating cavitating water jets, the specific impact of the nozzle rotational velocity on the evolution of the whole flow field was systematically explored in this work. More specifically, a numerical simulation study of a three-nozzle rotating cavitation nozzle was carried out using the Large Eddy Simulation method of the WALE sub-lattice model. After determining 12MPa as the inlet pressure condition. The tangential velocity, vorticity, cavitation cloud development patterns, and wall pressure changes in the internal flow field at different rotational speeds were compared. From our analysis, it was demonstrated that as the nozzle rotates faster, the tangential velocity of the jet increases, leading to a deflection of the jet. The degree of deflection is positively related to the rotational speed. Under the action of shear, the vortex structure will gradually increase in size as the jet develops and finally breaks up and disintegrates. The period of cavitation cloud development and maximum volume fraction increases with increasing the rotational speed; When the rotational speed increases, the striking pressure of the rotating jet on the wall first increases and then decreases. The fitted jet curve can better reproduce the jet development pattern. The derived fitting formula allows the determination of the corresponding impact angle according to the magnitude of the rotational velocity. The existence of a higher nozzle rotation speed induces a greater curvature of the fitted curve, the deflection angle, and the impact angle. Our work provides a robust theoretical reference for the field application of the rotating nozzle cavitation water jet technology and can be used as technical support for industrial well-bore unblocking and pipeline descaling. High-energy fluid at the outlet of the impeller might get access to the impeller inlet via the sealing ring clearance of the centrifugal pump with shrouded impeller. In this case, the great velocity and energy differences between the fluid at the inlet and outlet of the impeller might trigger unsteady flows during the collision with large energy loss produced. As a result, the flow status of the impeller inlet can be exacerbated; causing that the centrifugal pump is susceptible to cavitation. A centrifugal pump with a low specific speed was studied in this paper. To begin with, five incident angles, that is the original angle (90°), 75°, 60°, 45°, and 30° were formed between the incident section of the sealing ring clearance and the inlet circumference of the impeller through changing the front cover of the impeller and the outer contour of the centrifugal pump. Then, the accuracy of the calculation results of the prototype pump (90°) was verified experimentally with analyses on the entropy generation, velocity streamline, backflow at the inlet section, internal entropy generation distribution of the centrifugal pump, and distribution of cavitation in specific conditions at the incidence of clearance of the centrifugal pump with different incident angles of sealing ring clearance. As can be seen from the results, changing the incident angle of the sealing ring clearance exerts a certain influence on the external characteristics of the centrifugal pump. To be specific, the sealing ring clearance with a small incident angle can lower the flow loss in the front cavity flow area and the impeller flow area of the centrifugal pump as well as can restrain the backflow prewhirl at the inlet section of the centrifugal pump and the cavitation inside the centrifugal pump. At the early stage of cavitation, the external characteristics and vibration noise of centrifugal pump have not changed significantly, but the flow conditions in the pump have changed markedly. In order to carry out in-depth study on the change characteristics of the flow conditions in centrifugal pump under different degrees of cavitation at the early stage of cavitation, in this paper, the quantitative relation between cavitation degree and pressure pulsation and fluid force was established by means of numerical calculation combined with test and by analyzing the changes in pressure pulsations and fluid forces in the pump under different degrees of cavitation degree. Studies have shown that the pressure pulsation amplitude and range value at the main frequency (shaft frequency and blade frequency) increases with the cavitation degree. The RMS value of pressure pulsation in each frequency band is positively correlated with cavitation development. In case of severe cavitation, the pressure pulsations in high frequency bands are greatly affected by cavitation. This paper aims to discuss the internal flow and cavitation characteristics of petal bionic nozzle holes under different injection pressures to improve the atomization effect of methanol. The FLUENT (v2022 R1) software is used for simulation. The Schnerr-Sauer cavitation model in the Mixture multiphase flow model is adopted, considering the evaporation and condensation processes of methanol fuel to accurately simulate cavitation and internal flow performance. The new nozzle hole is compared with the ordinary circular nozzle hole for analysis to ensure research reliability. The results show that the cavitation of the petal bionic nozzle hole mainly occurs at the outlet, which can enhance the atomization effect. In terms of turbulent kinetic energy, the internal turbulent kinetic energy of the petal bionic nozzle hole is greater under the same pressure. At 1 MPa, its outlet turbulent kinetic energy is 38.37 m2/s2, which is about 2.3 times that of the ordinary circular nozzle hole. When the injection pressure is from 0.2 MPa to 1 MPa, the maximum temperature of the ordinary circular nozzle hole increases by about 33.4%, while that of the petal bionic nozzle hole only increases by 12.3%. The intensity of internal convection and vortex is significantly reduced. The outlet velocity and turbulent kinetic energy distribution of the petal bionic nozzle hole are more uniform. In general, the internal flow performance of the petal bionic nozzle hole is more stable, which is beneficial to the collision and fragmentation of droplets and has better uniformity of droplet distribution. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is widely used in bottle production by stretch blow molding processes (SBM processes) due to its cost-effectiveness and low environmental impact. The presented literature review focuses on microcavitation and solid-state post-condensation effects that occur during the deformation of PET in the SBM process. The literature review describes cavitation and microcavitation effects in PET material and solid-state post-condensation of PET on the basis of a three-phase model of the PET microstructure. A three-phase model of PET microstructure (representing the amorphous phase in two ways, depending on the ratio of the trans-to-gauche conformation of the PET macromolecule and the amount of free volume) with a nucleation process, a crystallization process, and the use of positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) to analyze PET microstructure are discussed in detail. The conceptual model developed based on the literature combines solid-state post-condensation with microcavitation via the diffusion of the post-condensation product. This review identifies the shortcomings of the developed conceptual model and presents them with five hypotheses, which will be the basis for further research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Among the many methods of joining different materials, gluing is characterized by its most specific nature. In comparison with, for example, welded, screwed, or overlapped connections, a glued connection depends on the largest number of factors. Many of them are related to the phenomenon of adhesion, which is complicated by definition. It has many shapes and forms, and its existence determines not only the durability of such a joint but also the possibility of its execution. Epoxy polymers are among the most commonly used adhesives. Their extremely good parameters can be easily modified by additives in the form of fillers. Compatibility between the filler and the adhesive allows for further improving the adhesive parameters in the glued joint. However, in order to effectively combine the adhesive and the filler, different, often specific mixing methods must be used. The following study presents the results obtained in an experimental research program, the aim of which was to increase the adhesion of epoxy resin to a properly prepared concrete substrate. As a method to increase the final adhesion, the addition of microsilica and carbon nanotubes in an experimentally determined amount was selected. The use of sonication as a mixing method together with cavitation allowed for improving the parameters which determine the final adhesion of the adhesive to concrete. The parameters which were selected to describe the course of changes in the adhesion of the adhesive to the concrete substrate were the viscosity, free surface energy, surface parameters, adhesion, and SEM images of the tested resin in various modification configurations. The obtained results make it possible to form stronger and more durable adhesive joints during the reinforcement of concrete structural elements using fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. This study aims to optimize the reduction of free fatty acids (FFAs) in palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD) using hydrodynamic cavitation reactors (HCRs) in series and a solid acid catalyst for biodiesel production. Hydrodynamic cavitation is used to accelerate the esterification of FFAs using a heterogeneous acid catalyst. There are three HCRs units, and each HCR composed of a 3D-printed rotor and stator, is separated by flanges and equipped with a basket for holding Amberlyst-15 catalyst. Through response surface methodology (RSM), the esterification process is optimized by adjusting its optimal parameters, namely, methanol (2–12 wt%), circulation time (30–170 min), and rotor speed (1000–3000 rpm). The optimal conditions for achieving a maximum methyl ester purity of 89.76 wt% in converting FFA in first-step esterified oil are 9 wt% methanol (molar ratio of methanol to oil of 4:1), 133 min of circulation time, and 2000 rpm of rotor speed. An 82.48 wt% biodiesel yield is achieved from the HCRs in series under the optimal conditions. Scanning electron microscope images reveal that after the esterification process, there are minor cracks and defects on the catalyst's resin surface, indicating the presence of residual reactants. Further examination of the catalyst after the esterification process, reveals an average absorption pore diameter of 341.41 Å and BET surface area of approximately 41.68 m2/g. Although there were slight physical changes in the catalyst, HCRs technology offers a viable FFA reduction process that could enhance biodiesel production efficiency. Moreover, the optimized conditions achieved in this study contribute to the advancement of biodiesel production processes and provide insights into the performance of the catalyst used. The current experimental investigation demonstrates the capability of neutron imaging to quantify cavitation, in terms of vapour content, within an orifice of an abruptly constricting geometry. The morphology of different cavitation regimes setting in was properly visualised owing to the high spatial resolution of 16 μm achieved, given the extensive field of view of 12.9 × 12.9 mm2 offered by the imaging set-up. At a second step, the method was proven capable of highlighting subtle differences between fluids of different rheological properties. More specifically, a reference liquid was comparatively assessed against a counterpart additised with a Quaternary Ammonium Salt (QAS) agent, thus obtaining a viscoelastic behaviour. In accordance with previous studies, it was verified, yet in a quantifiable manner, that the presence of viscoelastic additives affects the overall cavitation topology by promoting the formation of more localised vortical cavities rather than cloud-like structures occupying a larger portion of the orifice core. To the authors' best knowledge, the present work is the first to demonstrate that neutron imaging is suitable for quantifying in-nozzle cavitating flow at the micrometre level, consequently elucidating the distinct forms of vaporous structures that arise. In this work, poly(4‐methyl‐1‐pentene)/polypropylene/poly(4‐methyl‐1‐pentene) tri‐layer films were prepared. The microstructure of the film was adjusted by annealing in the temperature range of 150–237.5°C. Afterward, the influence of annealing and stretching temperature on the cavitation behavior of the film was investigated by small‐angle x‐ray scattering (SAXS). Results showed that for the "butterfly" scattering in the early stage, the radius of gyration (Rg) and maximum dimension (Dmax) of voids were ca. 75 and 200 nm, which were hardly influenced by annealing. Whereas, the volume fraction of voids was enlarged obviously, suggesting that more voids were formed; for the "streak" scattering in the late stage, the length of voids (Lv) grew gradually with stretching, and the ultimate value of Lv was 432.5 nm for un‐annealed film and 176 nm for film annealed at 230°C. Simultaneously, the misorientation of voids was reduced from 0.33 to 0.18. As the stretching temperature was elevated from 30 to 45 and 60°C, Rg and Dmax maintained at 75 and 200 nm, and Lv was enlarged to 434 and 432 nm. This paper presented an addendum rotational hydrodynamic cavitation reactors (ARHCR) that enabled circumferential shear cavitation, axial cavitation, and the Venturi effect, thus increasing cavitation efficiency. The experiments on hydroxyl (·OH) release and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal demonstrate the feasibility of cavitation performance characterization and COD removal rate. The findings indicate that the COD removal rate can reach a maximum value of 28% or 30% with an increase in flow rate or rotating speed, respectively. Specifically, the maximum values were achieved at a rotation speed of 2,500 rpm or a flow rate of 1.0 m3·h−1. Based on the mechanism of the addendum cavitation, the wedge angles, and the crucial structural parameters, were examined for optimizing cavitation performance. The results revealed that the cavitation number and cavitation bubble were significantly influenced by wedge angles, as well as the efficiency of cavitation energy. The mechanical shear of fluid was enhanced by wedge angles, resulting in constant compression and release of fluid with increased kinetic energy. This led to stronger effects on bulge blocks, and the formation of vortexes that rebounded constantly, resulting in lower pressure areas and expanded regions of cavitation. Among the wedge angles tested, the wedge angle of 15° exhibited the highest cavitation bubbles with a maximum value of 46%. This was 31% higher than the grooves‐type cavitator reported. Furthermore, the cavitation performance was extremely improved with a wedge angle of 15°, as corresponding with the maximum efficiency of cavitation energy. While met with initial and ground-breaking success targeting blood borne cancers, cellular immunotherapy remains significantly hindered in the context of solid tumors by the tumor microenvironment. Focused ultrasound, in conjunction with microbubbles, has found tremendous potential as a targeted and local drug/gene delivery technique for cancer therapy. The specific immunomodulating effects of this technique on immune cells, including T-cells, remain unexplored. Here, with freshly isolated human immune cells, we examine how focused ultrasound can viably modulate immune cell membrane permeability and influence the secretion of over 90 cytokines, chemokines and other analytes relevant to a potent immune response against cancer. We determine that microbubble-mediated focused ultrasound modulates the immune cell secretome in a time-dependent manner – ranging in ~0.1-3.6-fold changes in the concentration of a given cytokine compared to sham controls over 48 hours post-treatment (e.g. IL-1β, TNF-α, CX3CL1, CCL21). Further, we determine the general trend of a negative correlation between secreted cytokine concentration and viable ultrasound-assisted membrane permeability with negligible loss of cell viability. Taken together, the data presented here highlights the potential of microbubble-mediated focused ultrasound to viably enhance T-cell permeability and modulate key pro-immune pathways, offering a novel approach to augment targeted cellular therapies for solid tumors. Cavitation jet technology is extensively applied in fields such as mechanical processing, rock fragmentation, and energy development. To deeply understand the motion characteristics of the submerged jet and evaluate the influence mechanism of cavitation number on cavitation characteristics, the factors of boundary conditions, grid size, and turbulence model were taken into account. In this study, based on CFD numerical simulation technique, the SBES turbulence model was used to analyze the evolution mechanism of the cavitation cloud and the effects of time and jet pressure on the cavitation characteristics. The results show that the SBES turbulence model can better capture the small-scale turbulent details in jet flow and predict the shedding phenomenon of the cavitation cloud downstream. Moreover, when the downstream cavitation cloud collapses, a local high pressure of very short duration is generated and transmitted around, which affects the morphology of the cavitation cloud at the nozzle outlet. And the increase of the jet pressure has a positive effect on the length of the outlet bubble, the vapor volume fraction of the shed cavitation cloud, and the number of small bubbles generated at the gas-water interface at the tail of the cavitation cloud. Besides the effect of cavitation number on the cavitation characteristic of the jet is mainly in the early stages of cavitation, while the effect in the later stages of development is weak. Over the past decade, ultrasound (US) has gathered significant attention and research focus in the realm of medical treatments, particularly within the domain of anti-cancer therapies. This growing interest can be attributed to its non-invasive nature, precision in delivery, availability, and safety. While the conventional objective of US-based treatments to treat breast, prostate, and liver cancer is the ablation of target tissues, the introduction of the concept of immunogenic cell death (ICD) has made clear that inducing cell death can take different non-binary pathways through the activation of the patient's anti-tumor immunity. Here, we investigate high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) to induce ICD by unraveling the underlying physical phenomena and resulting biological effects associated with HIFU therapy using an automated and fully controlled experimental setup. Our in-vitro approach enables the treatment of adherent cancer cells (B16F10 and CT26), analysis for ICD hallmarks and allows to monitor and characterize in real time the US-induced cavitation activity through passive cavitation detection (PCD). We demonstrate HIFU-induced cell death, CRT exposure, HMGB1 secretion and antigen release. This approach holds great promise in advancing our understanding of the therapeutic potential of HIFU for anti-cancer strategies. A dedicated HIFU set-up was developed that allows to monitor and correlate HIFU induced cavitation with the biological outcomes focusing on cancer cell death, antigenicity and adjuvanticity (ICD hallmarks). This set-up allows the successful in vitro treatment of adherent cells with US as well as collection of the samples for analysis without any form of contamination. Point-of-care ultrasound demonstrates significant potential in biomedical research due to its noninvasive, real-time visualization, cost-effectiveness, and other biological benefits. Ultrasound irradiation can precisely control the mechanical and physicochemical effects on pathogenic lesions, enabling real-time visualization, tunable tissue penetration depth, and therapeutic applications. This review summarizes recent advancements in ultrasound-enabled diagnostics and therapeutics, focusing on mechanochemical effects that can be directly integrated into biomedical applications. Additionally, the structure-functionality relationships of sonotheranostic nanoplatforms are systematically discussed, providing insights into the underlying biological effects. Finally, the limitations of current ultrasonic medicine are discussed, along with potential expansions to facilitate patient-centered translations. In this paper, a novel ultrasonic cavitation (USC)-assisted low-speed WEDM (WEDM-LS) process is proposed to address the issue of low machining efficiency and the recast layer when cutting thick nickel-titanium shape memory alloy (NiTi SMA) workpiece. Based on the Rayleigh-Plesset model, the machining mechanism of USC-assisted WEDM-LS is explored. Firstly, considering the influence of WEDM on vapor volume fraction (VVF) in the flow field, the impact strength of microjet, which is caused by collapsing near-wall acoustic bubbles on the workpiece surface, is studied. In addition, the influence of a single bubble collapse microjet impacting on the workpiece surface and recast layer is simulated and analyzed based on water hammer effect. The results demonstrated that the microjet is useful for removing workpiece material. The verification experiment results showed that, compared to traditional WEDM-LS, the material removal rate (MRR) of USC-assisted WEDM-LS increases by 31.65%, the thickness of the recast layer reduces by 20.39%, and the degree of burn surface is effectively reduced. The application of ultrafine bubbles a.k.a. nano-bubbles (NBs) in upgrading the flotation recovery of fine particles has been extensively investigated from various perspectives over the last two decades. However, their rheological aspect has not been studied yet, which is presented for the first time in this paper. To this end, the current study addresses the effect of six crucial variables including solid content (5%, 15%, and 25% (w/w)), presence and absence of NBs, inner diameter of a Venturi tube (1.5 and 2.2 mm), pH of pulp (4.5–11) and frother dosage (3, 13, and 33 mg/L) on the variation of rheological parameters i.e. shear stress, shear tension, and viscosity. Ultrafine bubbles were generated in a conditioning tank through the hydrodynamic cavitation mechanism using a fatty-acid-based frother (Flo-Y-S), while the rheological responses were continuously monitored and measured by a rheometer and parallel plate spindle (for pulp) and a double gap spindle (for NBs). Flotation tests were conducted on a high-grade phosphate ore (d80 = 37 µm) using a mechanically agitated Denver®-type (D12) flotation cell. The experimental results revealed that fluid behavior without NBs using 13 mg/L frother was in the range of shear rates less than 1 s−1 non-Newtonian and close to the shear thinning state, while it became completely Newtonian in the range of 1 to 1500 s−1. However, the presence of NBs at the same frother content changed this tendency to non-Newtonian and Newtonian fluids at shear rates of <30 s−1 and >30 s−1, respectively. It was also found that either in acidic (5.5) or strong alkaline (11) domains, the pulp viscosity trends were almost close to each other and varied from 0.002−10 to 0.002−4 Pa.s, respectively. On the other hand, on the same trend, the amount was lowered to three times in the neutral range (7.5) and weak alkalinities (9). Diminishing the inner diameter of the Venturi tube from 2.2 mm to 1.5 mm led to an increment of shear stress and viscosity about twice at the shear rates <100 s−1. The results of evaluating frother dosage showed that an increase in the amount of frother dosage, which reduced bubble dimensions, exceeded the viscosity and the amount of shear stress. Finally, we concluded that the rheological properties significantly impacted the selective separation of NB-assisted flotation processes and need further investigations in the future. Functional triblock copolymers (BCPs), i.e., poly(glycidyl methacrylate/methyl methacrylate)-b-poly(lauryl methacrylate)-b-poly(glycidyl methacrylate/methyl methacrylate) triblock copolymers [(P(GMA/MMA)-b-PLMA-b-P(GMA/MMA)], were investigated as toughening modifiers for all-methacrylate polymer blends. Methyl methacrylate (MMA) was copolymerized with methacrylic acid (MAA) in the presence of the BCPs. Without MAA in the polymethacrylate matrices, the BCP blends formed micron-scale phase structures by polymerization-induced phase separation. In matrices copolymerized with MAA, self-assembled nanostructures, such as curved lamellae, worm-like cylindrical micelles, or spherical micelles were formed. The BCP blends with worm-like cylindrical nano-micelles achieved much higher fracture toughness than those with spherical nano-micelles. The toughening mechanisms were elucidated by transmission electron microscopy. Cavitation was initiated in worm-like cylindrical nano-micelles, and the aligned cavitation formed craze-like deformation with increased loads. This relieves hydrostatic tensile stress in front of the crack tip, forming a large shear yield zone within the craze-like deformation region, contributing to high toughness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the observation of change in the cavitation regime on a heated surface, the specific section of the wall surface that plays a more dominant role in this transition phenomenon remains unknown. This study experimentally investigated the effect of surface temperature of different regions on the cavitating flow in terms of the cavitation regime. The experiments were conducted using a convergent–divergent Venturi nozzle comprising two parts that could be heated independently. The Venturi nozzle could be fully or selectively heated at either the front, where the leading edge of the cavity sheet was located, or the rear, where the cavity sheet developed. The cavitation behavior under different heating conditions was investigated using high-speed visualization and fluctuating pressure measurements. Compared with the nonheated case, which exhibited sheet-cloud cavitation, the cavitation regime on the fully heated Venturi nozzle exhibited transient cavitation. The same transition phenomenon was also observed when only the front part of the Venturi nozzle was heated. In contrast, heating the rear part alone did not induce a change in the cavitation regime. Therefore, it appeared that the transition of the cavitation regime on a heated surface was mainly influenced by the temperature increase at the leading edge of the cavity sheet. The hydro-elastic response of a flexible NACA 0015 hydrofoil is investigated for both wetted and cavitating flow conditions. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis are performed using a fully implicit coupling between the ISIS-CFD solver (developed by the METHRIC team at Ecole Centrale de-Nantes) and a modal approach for the structure. The Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) solver is first validated for wetted and cavitating flow conditions around a similar rigid hydrofoil, with experimental results carried out at the hydrodynamic tunnel of the French Naval Academy, including lift and drag measurements and high speed camera images. Then the numerical predictions for the flexible hydrofoil response are compared with experimental bending shapes and vibrations amplitudes, with a focus on cavitating flow conditions. For wetted flow conditions, numerical results show a good agreement with the experiments, for both rigid and flexible hydrofoils. For cavitating flow conditions, the hydro-elastic response is dominated by vibrations at the hydrofoil modal frequencies and the reentrant jet instability frequency. For the lowest values of the cavitation number, a large amplitude peak is experimentally observed in the frequency response spectra, due to lock-in between the first modal frequency and the reentrant jet frequency. Strong harmonics of this dominant peak also appear in the spectra, revealing a nonlinear response of the hydrofoil. While the amplitudes of vibrations are well predicted by the computations, the frequency lock-in observed in the experiments is not captured by the numerical model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Small hydro technology is playing a crucial role in advancing sustainable, clean energy policies as part of the global hydro development strategy. Its contribution to social and economic development is becoming more prominent, particularly in ensuring electricity access for rural communities and supporting industrial expansion. The main causes of bulb turbine failures under high operating conditions are frequently attributed to variations in pressure in the draft tubes, which are aggravated when a spinning vortex rope is formed under load operation. Different fluid injection techniques, namely compressed air and water jet injection, address these issues and reduce the negative results of cavitation. The investigation covers the flow visualization on the suction side of a single hydrofoil utilizing a cavitation tunnel and a bulb turbine. This study assesses the effectiveness of compressed air injection in reducing vibration generated by cavitation in bulb turbines. Positive results of the experimental studies suggest a decrease in noise and vibration by air injection that prevents oscillations of the vortex rope. This research also considers how the hydrofoil design of bulb runner blades influences flow characteristics. Hence, it provides knowledge on cavitation structures in diverse cavitation numbers. Different studies that compare the original and modified hydrofoil designs reveal remarkable improvements that may be due to changes in the key parameters of the hydrofoil, such as later cavitation initiation and reduced intensity. To obtain the optimal output of a bulb turbine by considering air injection for vibration reduction and hydrofoil design changes to limit the negative effect of cavitation, the Reynolds number and cavitation number are to be defined. Cavitation is a common phenomenon in naval and ocean engineering, typically occurring in the wakes of high-speed rotating propellers and on the surfaces of fast-moving underwater vehicles. To investigate cavitation phenomena, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are indispensable. Nevertheless, the inherently complex nature of cavitation, which involves phase transitions, heat transfer, and significant pressure fluctuations, often results in high computational costs for these simulations. To address the computational challenges associated with cavitation simulations, a DeepCFD model, which leverages convolutional neural networks (CNNs), was employed to accurately predict cavitation around hydrofoils. Through specific modifications, the DeepCFD model was trained on 400 hydrofoil configurations, learned from CFD simulations. The numerical methods were validated against a modified NACA66 hydrofoil. It was found that the model could accurately predict cavitation shapes under various flow conditions, although it showed some discrepancies in velocity predictions, especially for detached cavitating flows. The significance of this study lies in its potential to simply predict cavitating flows and expedite marine vehicle design through the application of CNNs in cavitation prediction, offering a novel and impactful approach to computational fluid dynamics in the field. In conventional double-hulled submarines, the connecting structures that facilitate the linkage between the two hulls are crucial for load transmission. This paper aims to elucidate the effect of these connecting structures on resistance to shock waves generated by underwater explosions. Firstly, a self-developed numerical solver is built for the one-dimensional water-filled elastically connected double-layer plate model. The shock wave propagation characteristics, shock response of structure, water cavitation, and impact loads transmitted through the gap water and the connecting structures are analyzed quantitatively. The results reveal that the majority of the shock impulse is transmitted by the gap water if the equivalent stiffness of the connecting structures is much less than that of the gap water. Then, a three-dimensional model of the double-hulled, water-filled cylindrical shell is constructed in Abaqus/Explicit, utilizing the acoustic-structural coupling methodology. The analysis focuses on the influence of the thickness and density distribution of the connecting structures on the system's shock response. The results indicate that a densely arranged connecting structure results in a wavy deformation of the outer hull and a notable reduction in both the impact response and strain energy of the inner hull. When the stiffness of the densely arranged connecting structure is comparatively low, the internal energy and plastic energy of the inner hull are decreased by 16.5% and 24.1%, respectively. Cavitation is a phase-change phenomenon from the liquid to the gas phase due to an increased flow velocity. As it causes severe erosion and noise, it is harmful to hydraulic machinery such as pumps, valves, and screw propellers. However, it can be utilized for water treatment, in chemical reactors, and as a mechanical surface treatment, as radicals and impacts at the point of cavitation bubble collapse can be utilized. Mechanical surface treatment using cavitation impacts is called "cavitation peening". Cavitation peening causes less pollution because it uses water to treat the mechanical surface. In addition, cavitation peening improves on traditional methods in terms of fatigue strength and the working life of parts in the automobile, aerospace, and medical fields. As cavitation bubbles are utilized in cavitation peening, the study of cavitation bubbles has significant value in improving this new technique. To achieve this, many numerical analyses combined with field experiments have been carried out to measure the stress caused by bubble collapse and rebound, especially when collapse occurs near a solid boundary. Understanding the mechanics of bubble collapse can help to avoid unnecessary surface damage, enabling more accurate surface preparation, and improving the stability of cavitation peening. The present study introduces three cavitation bubble types: single, cloud, and vortex cavitation bubbles. In addition, the critical parameters, governing equations, and high-speed camera images of these three cavitation bubble types are introduced to support a broader understanding of the collapse mechanism and characteristics of cavitation bubbles. The presented study aims to reveal the effect of liquid temperature on cavitation-induced erosion of an Al-Mg alloy. An experimental work was conducted using a submerged cavitating waterjet to impact the specimen surface. For a certain cavitation number and a given standoff distance, different liquid temperatures were considered. Accordingly, a comprehensive comparison was implemented by inspecting the mass loss and surface morphology of the tested specimens. The results show that the cumulative mass loss increases continuously with the liquid temperature. A cavitation zone with an irregular profile becomes evident as the cavitation treatment proceeds. Increasing the temperature promotes the generation of cavitation bubbles. Large erosion pits are induced after severe material removal. The microhardness increases with the distance from the target surface. At a liquid temperature of 50°C, the microhardness fluctuates apparently with increasing the depth of indentation. Emerging contaminants (ECs) are widely present in aquatic environments, posing potential risks to both ecosystems and human health. The ultrasound-assisted persulfate oxidation process has attracted considerable attention in the degradation of ECs due to its ability to generate both sulfate radicals and cavitation effects, enhancing degradation effects. In this paper, the principle of ultrasonic synergistic Fenton-like oxidation system for degrading organic pollutants was reviewed, divided into homogeneous system, non-homogeneous system, and single-atom system to explore the synergistic effect of ultrasound-enhanced persulfate technology in three aspects, and the effects of environmental factors such as ultrasonic frequency and power, system pH, temperature, and initial oxidant concentration on the system's decontamination performance were discussed. This study presents a mixed lubrication model for misaligned microgroove water-lubricated bearings (WLBs). The model considers the effects of cavitation and turbulence to assess the mixed lubrication performance of WLBs with various microgroove morphologies. The equations are discretized using the control volume method (CVM) and solved by using the Fischer–Burmeister–Newton–Schur method for dealing with the constrained system. A comparison of the experimental data from the published literature demonstrates the model and methodology's validity. On this basis, the effects of rotational speed, load, and misalignment angle on the mixed lubrication performance of microgroove WLBs are investigated. The numerical results indicate that the left-triangular microgroove exhibits the best-mixed lubrication performance. Under elastohydrodynamic lubrication and mixed lubrication conditions, there are significant discrepancies in microgroove morphology. However, this discrepancy diminishes with increasing misalignment angles. The edge contact problem resulting from journal misalignment can be efficiently mitigated by selecting the proper microgroove morphology. Lichens are a mutualistic symbiosis between a fungus and one or more photosynthetic partners. They are photosynthetically active during desiccation down to relative water contents (RWCs) as low as 30% (on dry mass). Experimental evidence suggests that during desiccation, the photobionts have a higher hydration level than the surrounding fungal pseudo-tissues. Explosive cavitation events in the hyphae might cause water movements towards the photobionts. This hypothesis was tested in two foliose lichens by measurements of ultrasonic acoustic emissions (UAEs), a method commonly used in vascular plants but never in lichens, and by measurements of PSII efficiency, water potential, and RWC. Thallus structural changes were characterized by low-temperature scanning electron microscopy. The thalli were silent between 380% and 30% RWCs, when explosive cavitation events should cause movements of liquid water. Nevertheless, the thalli emitted UAEs at ~5% RWC. Accordingly, the medullary hyphae were partially shrunken at ~15% RWC, whereas they were completely shrunken at <5% RWC. These results do not support the hypothesis of hyphal cavitation and suggest that the UAEs originate from structural changes at hyphal level. Cavitation may occur in water-jet pump during operation of water-jet propulsion vessel, and once cavitation occurs, the tip clearance pulsating pressure of the impeller may be intensified, resulting in increased vibration of the water-jet propulsion unit. In this paper, the cavitation pulsating pressure characteristics at different positions in the pump are studied by experiment and numerical simulation, and the pulsating pressure characteristics in tip clearance are mainly researched. Based on Star-CCM+ commercial software, unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations(RANS) numerical simulation is carried out, and the feasibility of the numerical simulation method is verified by uncertainty analysis. The results show that the cavitation pulsating pressure near the leading edge of the impeller in the tip clearance is the largest. The variation of the tip clearance pulsating pressure with the intensification of cavitation is studied by numerical simulation, and its mechanism is revealed. A dimensionless coefficient of net positive suction head (CNPSH) is proposed, and the study shows that the cavitation pulsation pressure coefficients of pumps of different scales are equal when the working conditions are similar and the CNPSH are equal, which indicates that the cavitation pulsating pressure performance of full scale pump can be predicted by model scale. Investigations were carried out in this paper to study the influence of rapid decompression rate on the polyamide 6 (PA6) liner materials through experimental and numerical methods. Firstly, hydrogen permeation tests at different pressures were conducted to obtain the functions representing the trend of permeation parameters with the pressure. Then decompression tests at different decompression rates had been carried out to get whitening specimens which would be observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Cavitation was found and the variety of the number of cavities with the decompression rate was recorded. It was found that the faster the decompression rate was, the higher the number of cavities in the specimen was. Thirdly, to determine the hydrogen concentration throughout the specimen and numerically check if cavitation occurred at various decompression rates, a 2D finite element model was established which introduced the permeation parameters as functions of pressure but not temperature, as another numerical model indicated the temperature field of specimens changed little. Then an approach was proposed to successfully implement the risk assessment of cavitation, and the liner material was considered as elastoplastic neglecting its viscoelasticity-viscoplasticity. Based on the assumptions and experimental conditions in the study, the Mises yield criterion was successful to assess the cavitation risk, and the approach was verified as the analysis results about the cavitation agree well with the SEM observations. In the end, based on the approach, it could be concluded that 11h was the critical safe decompression time for the PA6 material in this study, and the decompression rate was 7.95 MPa/h. The approach in this study can also be used as guidelines for the cavitation risk assessment of other systems and materials undergoing rapid decompression. • Permeation parameters of PA6 material in gaseous hydrogen are measured under 15 MPa, 43.75 MPa, 87.5 MPa. • The effect of pressure on permeation coefficients is considered in the present diffusion model. • Through SEM observations it is found that the number of cavities rises with the increasing decompression rate. • The safety decompression rate is calculated considering the mechanical equilibrium and hydrogen diffusion in cavities. In order to combat environmental pollution and the depletion of non-renewable fuels, feasible, eco-friendly, and sustainable biodiesel production from non-edible oil crops must be augmented. This study is the first to intensify biodiesel production from castor oil using a self-manufactured cylindrical stator-rotor hydrodynamic cavitation reactor. In order to model and optimize the biodiesel yield, a response surface methodology based on a 1/2 fraction-three-level face center composite design of three levels and five experimental factors was used. The predicted ideal operating parameters were found to be 52.51°C, 1164.8 rpm rotor speed, 27.43 min, 8.4:1 methanol-to-oil molar ratio, and 0.89% KOH concentration. That yielded 95.51% biodiesel with a 99% fatty acid methyl ester content. It recorded a relatively low energy consumption and high cavitation yield of 6.09 × 105 J and 12 × 10−3 g/J, respectively. The generated biodiesel and bio-/petro-diesel blends had good fuel qualities that were on par with global norms and commercially available Egyptian petro-diesel. Diamond wire sawing plays an important role in semiconductor processing. Considering that the cavitation effect can improve the machining quality, a new technology of ultrasonic cavitation–assisted diamond wire sawing (UCAWS) is proposed in this paper. To study the formation process of cavitation in UCAWS and its influence on processing, a simulation and experimental study of cavitation in UCAWS is conducted. The pressure distribution model and cavitation model of two-phase mixed flow around wire sawing in UCAWS are constructed by combining the ideal bubble dynamic theory. The effect of vapor volume fraction (VVF) on cavitation intensity is calculated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The simulation results show that transient cavitation and steady-state cavitation exist simultaneously around wire sawing and with the increase of ultrasonic amplitude, the cavitation effect is enhanced. UCAWS experiments are conducted on monocrystalline silicon to study the changes in sawing force and workpiece surface roughness. The experimental results show that the sawing force of the UCAWS decreases by 6.65% on average compared to ultrasonic vibration–assisted diamond wire sawing (UAWS), the surface roughness value is reduced by 6.3% on average, and the surface morphology is improved. The article investigates the potential for producing hydrogen by combining the methods of water splitting under cavitation and the chemical activation of aluminum in a high-speed cavitation–jet flow generated by a specialized hydrodynamic reactor. The process of cavitation and water spraying causes the liquid heating itself until it reaches saturated vapor pressure, resulting in the creation of vapor–gaseous products from the splitting of water molecules. The producing of vapor–gaseous products can be explained through the theory of non-equilibrium low-temperature plasma formation within a high-speed cavitation–jet flow of fluid. Special focus is also given to the interactions occurring at the interface boundary phase of aluminum and liquid under cavitation condition. The primary solid products formed on aluminum surfaces are bayerite, copper oxides (I and II), iron carbide, and a compound of magnesium oxides and aluminum hydroxide. A high hydrogen yield of 60% was achieved when using a 0.1% sodium hydroxide solution as a working liquid compared to demineralized water. Moreover, hydrogen methane was also detected in the volume of the vapor–gas mixture, which could be utilized to address the challenges of decarbonization and the recycling of aluminum-containing solid industrial and domestic waste. This work provides a contribution to the study of the mechanism of hydrogen generation by cavitation–jet processing of water and aqueous alkali solutions, in which conditions are created for double cavitation in the cavitation–jet chamber of the hydrodynamic reactor. Background: High-speed flow of clean water or water with sediment released from aging spillways may cause abrasion and cavitation on the concrete surface gradually. The occurrence of irregularities on the concrete surface can exacerbate the erosion problem. Which might jeopardize the safety of dams constantly, hence the rehabilitation efforts become urgent tasks in dam safety projects. Methods: This study employs a 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model to quantitatively analyze the cavitation risk on the aging concrete surface of the Chay 5 spillway in Ha Giang, Vietnam, under various operation scenarios. There are two standards used to measure cavitation: the cavitation index (σ) which indicates the danger due to the drop of pressure in rapid flow, and the new gasification index (β) which takes into consideration the formation and collapse of bubbles behind asperities. Results: Three extreme flood cases may not result in potential cavitation because both σ and β exceed critical thresholds. Regarding the six controlled gate scenarios with normal water level, the σ profiles are approximated 1,0 showing a low likelihood of cavitation damage while the β values are smaller than 0.8, indicating a considerable risk of cavitation. Besides, the opening height of 100 cm poses the greatest risk of creating severe cavitation erosion in the concave area and slope portion. The flip bucket experienced the most vulnerable cavitation when the opening height is 400 cm. In addition, an approach to spillway surface rehabilitation involving specialized mortars has been presented. Conclusion: For aging conveyance structure, gasification index (β) takes into account irregularities surface, providing a more comprehensive assessment of the likelihood of cavitation damage than cavitation index (σ). After rehabilitation with anti-shrinkage high abrasion resistance mortar, the entire spillway surface is smooth. This allows for reducing the cavitation risk and improvement of life service thereof.
