1. More Than Just a Strongman: The Strategic Construction of Viktor Orbán's Charismatic Authority on Facebook.

Abstract

Populist leaders are often described as "strongmen," receiving a somewhat two-dimensional Western press coverage that cannot explain their local popularity. Based on visual and textual analysis of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's Facebook, we argue that he has a more complex social media persona. Orbán's Facebook shows him as (1) a fighter against a variety of enemies, (2) a symbolic condensation of the nation, (3) a relatable politician with (4) a gentleness toward children and animals, and (5) a strong competence in elite political contexts. Orbán uses his charismatic authority on Facebook to draw the boundaries of the Hungarian nation, presenting himself as the iconic representation of "Hungarian-ness." The building blocks of his image are constantly being adapted to the current political situation and to shifts in public opinion. The Orbán image is, thus, a fluid and pragmatic material with only a few core principles and its popularity remains steadfast despite the brand's contradictions. Abstract

Attention-seeking personal profiles on social media increasingly define successful political communication. But Angela Merkel, during her 16-year chancellorship, has come to stand for the opposite. The first woman to ever fill the office, she built a reputation for rational, evidence-based decision-making and predictable performances. Based on a visual discourse analysis of Angela Merkel's official Instagram account, this article shows how her authenticity was strategically built through performances of ordinariness and consistency, without relying on more emotional aspects of presentation such as immediacy and intimacy. Instead of shaping her online persona according to the traditions and style of Instagram, Merkel attempted to bend Instagram to host her unique persona. Instead of "instagramizing" Merkel, she "merkelized" Instagram. This finding complicates understandings of social media and contemporary politics as being focused on relatability, spectacle, and drama. Inspired by Graham Harman's philosophy of human access, and within the 'flattening ontology' of Object Oriented Ontology, Ring o' Roses is speculated about as a finite object with ontological independence from humans, repertoire, song, utility, and cultural context. Ring o' Roses playfully dances us through an introduction to OOO, and on to the idea of young children's early musical play as something different from its qualities and benefits. Indeed, the reality of musical play can be speculated about as ontologically irreducible, and as having a weird and vast, yet fragile, interior which is announced by allure. 4. PLATO ON CORRECTING PHILOSOPHICAL CORRUPTION.

Abstract

Plato's Republic VII suggests that if we ask someone to philosophize when they are too young, they can become corrupted (537e–539d). Republic VII also suggests that to avoid this corruption, we must not expose youth to argument (539a–b). This is not a reasonable option outside of Kallipolis, so a question arises: does Plato describe how to correct corruption if we do not manage to prevent it? This paper shows that a parallel between this passage from Republic VII and a passage from Laws X suggests that he does. Laws X describes an impious man who is corrupted in the same way as the youth exposed to philosophy prematurely in Republic VII. While we leave the youth to his corruption in Republic , the impious man is helped to overcome his corruption in Laws with a refutation followed by a myth (also called a charm). This paper analyses these steps in terms of Plato's psychology, showing that both corruption and correction require a destabilization of the soul, which in these passages is brought about through refutation. This destabilization allows for a reconfiguration, which, with something that can restabilize the soul (for example with myth), can be a reconfiguration for the better. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This essay examines how the American marketing consultant Estelle Ellis constructed both consumer markets as well as her own marketing expertise for Seventeen magazine (1945–1950), Charm magazine (1950–1958), and later, at her own marketing consultancy Business Image, Inc. (1958–1990), Condé Nast's Vogue. It argues that figures like Ellis can help us see the material role marketing consultants play in shaping political and media discourse. It examines how Ellis staged market-based interpretations of political categories for her merchandiser clients, translating political power into commercial value and, in the process, redefining categories like "feminist" upon her own lucrative terms. It follows two interrelated marketing tools that Ellis used in her work: audience construction strategies and self-branding practices. My reading of Ellis' career offers up one example of how audiences become bound up with the marketers who construct them. Through this example, I reveal how this strategy works to authenticate the consumer as real; embed them within specific gendered and racialized categories; and sanitize them of any political associations that might exist in tension with a client's—or the marketer's—needs. 6. Fifty Years of Experimental High Energy Physics.

There have been a large number of important discoveries in the field of experimental high energy physics over the past fifty years. Some of the important milestones are (1) discovery of the neutral current to establish the first step of the electroweak theory; (2) evidence of charm and beauty through the search of quarkonia and multi-muon events in deep inelastic scattering; (3) discovery of the third generation through the discovery of the tau lepton; (4) evidence of Bjorken scale breaking to initiate Quantum Chromodynamics, the theory of strong interaction; (5) observation of parton (quark) showers in the formation of jets and discovery of gluons; (6) discovery of the W and Z bosons, the mediators of the weak interaction; (7) precision measurements of the properties of the W and the Z bosons to establish the correctness of radiative corrections and to predict of yet to be discovered particles like the top quark and the Higgs boson; (8) discovery of the top quark and the tau neutrino; (9) establishing neutrino oscillation and thereby massive neutrinos; (10) finding CP violation in the decays of hadrons from the third generation of quarks; (11) discovery of the Higgs boson. During this process, the field of experimental high energy physics also experienced revolutions in the detection techniques, triggering and data acquisition systems and finally the use of new analysis techniques like detector simulation and artificial intelligence. Abstract

The SND@LHC detector experiment is located at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), about 480 m downstream of the ATLAS interaction point. The detector is designed to measure, for the first time ever, high-energy neutrinos produced at the LHC in the pseudorapidity region of 7.2 < η < 8.4 , which is inaccessible to other LHC experiments. The detector comprises a hybrid system that incorporates multiple components. The detector includes a 830 kg target composed of tungsten plates arranged in alternating layers with nuclear emulsion and electronic trackers: this arrangement functions as an electromagnetic calorimeter. Following the electromagnetic calorimeter, there is a hadronic calorimeter and a muon identification system. The detector possesses the ability to differentiate interactions involving all three neutrino flavours, enabling investigations into the physics of heavy flavour production in the forward region. This research is particularly significant for future circular colliders and high-energy astrophysical neutrino experiments. Furthermore, the detector has the ability to search for the scattering of Feebly Interacting Particles. The detector started operating during the LHC Run 3, and it collected a total of ∼39 fb − 1 in 2022. The detector aims to collect approximately 250 fb − 1 in the whole of Run 3. Abstract

Abstract Aims The Candesartan in Heart failure Assessment of Reduction in Mortality and morbidity (CHARM) programme consisted of three parallel, randomized, double‐blind clinical trials comparing candesartan with placebo in patients with heart failure (HF) categorized according to left ventricular ejection fraction and tolerability to an angiotensin‐converting enzyme inhibitor. We conducted a pharmacogenomic study of the CHARM trials with the objective of identifying genetic predictors of HF progression and of the efficacy and safety of treatment with candesartan. Methods We performed genome‐wide association studies in 2727 patients of European ancestry from CHARM‐Overall and stratified by CHARM study according to preserved and reduced ejection fraction and according to assignment to the interventional treatment with candesartan. We tested genetic association with the composite endpoint of cardiovascular death or hospitalization for heart failure for drug efficacy in candesartan‐treated patients and for HF progression using patients from both candesartan and placebo arms. The safety endpoints for response to candesartan were hyperkalaemia, renal dysfunction, hypotension, and change in systolic blood pressure between baseline and 6 weeks of treatment. To support our observations, we conducted a genome‐wide gene‐level collapsing analysis from whole‐exome sequencing data with the composite cardiovascular endpoint. Results We found that the A allele (14% allele frequency) of the genetic variant rs66886237 at 8p21.3 near the gene GFRA2 was associated with the composite cardiovascular endpoint in 1029 HF patients with preserved ejection fraction from the CHARM‐Preserved study (hazard ratio: 1.91, 95% confidence interval: 1.55–2.35; P = 1.7 × 10−9). The association was independent of candesartan treatment, and the genetic variant was not associated with the cardiovascular endpoint in patients with reduced ejection fraction. None of the genome‐wide association studies for candesartan safety or efficacy conducted in patients treated with candesartan passed the significance threshold. We found no significant association from the gene‐level collapsing analysis. Conclusions We have identified a candidate genetic variant potentially predictive of the progression of heart failure in patients with preserved ejection fraction. The findings require further replication, and we cannot exclude the possibility that the results may be chance findings.

9. Searching for rare charm decays, performing alignment studies and improving the analysis ecosystem in HEP

Abstract

A search for rare and forbidden decays of the form D+ -> h+(-) l+ l-(+) has been performed, where h is a charged pion or kaon and l is an electron or muon, using 1.5/fb of data that was collected by the LHCb detector during 2016. No statistically significant deviations from the background only hypothesis are observed and upper limits are given for 25 final states, with 23 improving upon the previous world's best measurements. The majority of these limits are improved by more than an order of magnitude and some by up to a factor of 500. Detector alignment studies are presented here that have been used to influence the development of the LHCb Upgrade VELO. This has included the alignment of several thousand testbeam datasets which were then analysed to provide results that guided the design of the new detector. Furthermore, a comprehensive study on the physics impact of thermally induced distortions of LHCb Upgrade VELO modules has been performed. This work resulted in changes to the manufacturing and quality assurance procedure and will help ensure optimal performance of the final detector. This thesis also discusses various efforts that have been made to improve the analysis ecosystem in high energy physics in response to the challenges faced during the aforementioned studies. This includes improving the tools, procedures and software training that are available to analysts to improve productivity and encourage long term analysis preservation. Such improvements will be essential to effectively utilise modern high energy physics experiments which are unprecedented in both scale and duration.

10. On Inaudible Violence and the Postcritical Musicology: Rehearing Schubert's "Heidenröslein".

Abstract

Schubert's "Heidenröslein" is sprightly and cheerful, but it sings of a woman's rape. This article maps out the political implications of the song's multiple alibis, drawing on reception history and post-Freudian lessons on listening. Schubert's music engenders myths about hearing that resonate with musicology's material turn and the postcritical attention to attachment, enchantment, and presence. "Heidenröslein," however, reveals music's charm not as a reliable harbinger of freedom- from disembodiment, epistemological certitude, or metaphysical abstraction-but as an occasional captor, liar, and false informant. Slavoj Zizek's taxonomy of violence prompts a new reflection on Schubert's song, which centers on what I theorize as "inaudible violence." This violence complicates Schubert's seemingly progressive relationship to questions of gender and sexuality, as well as the ethics of postcritical affective attachment. Schubert's song, ultimately, gives voice to a philosophy of music's inaudible violence. It calls for a psychoanalytic archaeology of acoustic acts and artifacts that encourages attention to musical sound's ethical misgivings, which, when not overlooked, may just be overheard. Abstract

In the last decade, Hugh Grant has been going through something resembling a career revival. After retreating from his roles as an English gentleman and romantic lead during the mid-2000s, Grant has recently re-emerged to garner critical acclaim in productions, such as Paddington 2 (2017), The Gentlemen (2019), and The Undoing (2020). What these roles have in common is that Grant has abandoned his days as prince charming in favour of a series of unlikeable characters and morally complex villains. This article analyses how this turn to villain signifies a renegotiation of Hugh Grant's star image and how this career revival stands into contact with his previous persona. Combining a close reading of some of Grant's recent films, together with a discussion of press discourse and interviews, I account for how Grant's villain performances are shaped and mediated by different artistic, commercial, and discursive forces. As such, I elucidate how Grant's renegotiation of his image helps distances himself from his previous career phase, is utilised by filmmakers to subvert audience expectations, and invites us to question the patriarchal and English imperialist attitudes that lay embedded in his previous performances. 15. Direct Charm Reconstruction in Association with W Bosons at √s = 13 TeV in the ATLAS Detector

Abstract

The production of a W boson in association with a single charm quark is studied using140 fb−1 of √s = 13 TeV proton–proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector atthe Large Hadron Collider. The charm quark is tagged by the presence of a charmed hadron,reconstructed with a secondary-vertex fit. The W boson is reconstructed from the decay toeither an electron or a muon and the missing transverse momentum present in the event.The W + D(∗) process is sensitive to the strange quark PDF, and can be combined withother measurements to improve uncertainties and central values of global PDF fits. Charmedmesons are reconstructed in the decay channels D+ → K−π+π+, D∗+ → D0π+ → (K−π+)π+,D+ → φπ → (KK)π, and Ds → φπ → (KK)π and the charge conjugate decays in the fiducialregions where pT(e, μ) > 30 GeV , |η(e, μ)| < 2.5, pT(D(∗)) > 8 GeV , and |η(D(∗))| < 2.2.The integrated and normalized differential cross-sections as a function of the pseudorapidityof the lepton from the W boson decay, and of the transverse momentum of the charmedhadron, are extracted for the D+ → Kππ and D∗ → D0π → Kππ decay modes. Thetotal fiducial cross section is measured for the Ds → φπ → (KK)π and D+ → φπ →(KK)π decay modes. All observables are extracted from the data using a profile likelihoodfit. The measured total fiducial cross-sections for the D+ → Kππ and D∗ → D0π →Kππ modes are σ(OS−SS, fid) (W −+D+) = 50.2 ± 0.2 (stat.) +2.4−2.3 (syst.) pb, σ (OS−SS, fid) (W ++D−) =48.5 ± 0.2 (stat.) +2.3−2.2 (syst.) pb, σ(OS−SS, fid) (W −+D∗+) = 51.1 ± 0.4 (stat.) +1.9−1.8 (syst.) pb, andσ(OS−SS, fid) (W ++D∗−) = 50.0 ± 0.4 (stat.) +1.9−1.8 (syst.) pb. These differential and total cross sectionresults are compared with the predictions of next-to-leading-order quantum chromodynamicscalculations performed using state-of-the-art parton distribution functions. Additionally, theratio of charm to anti-charm production cross-sections is studied to probe the s- ̄s quarkasymmetry. The ratio is found to be Rc = 0.971 ± 0.006 (stat.) ± 0.011 (syst.). The ratioand cross-section measurements are consistent with the predictions obtained with partondistribution function sets that have a symmetric s- ̄s sea, indicating that any s- ̄s asymmetry inthe Bjorken-x region relevant for this measurement is small. For the Ds → φπ → (KK)π andD+ → φπ → (KK)π analysis, the observables that are measured are the inclusive cross sectionin both charges for the W +Ds process, the ratio of the cross sections with respect to the charge,and the ratio of the Ds to the D+ process. The measured values are σ(OS−SS, fid) (W −+D+s ) =17.8±0.4 (stat.) +1.8−1.6 (syst.) pb, σ(OS−SS, fid) (W ++D−s ) = 15.8±0.4 (stat.) +1.5−1.4 (syst.) pb, Rc (Ds) =0.885 ± 0.029 (stat.)+0.059−0.057 (syst.), and R(D+/Ds) = 2.93 ± 0.06(stat.) ± 0.24 (sys.). These result are consistent with the differential W + D+ analysis within 1.5 standard deviations, and are at a lower precision due to lower data and MC simulation statistics and increased systematicuncertainties related to background modeling.

Geetanjali, a collection of 103 songs, is among those spiritual works of Rabindranath Tagore on which he has been awarded with Nobel Prize in 1913 by London Society. When this book was published in 1912 by the name of “Song Offerings” in English, many people translated it in different languages. It is also translated many times in Urdu. Abdul Aziz Khalid was the first Urdu composer and translator of Rabindranath Tagore's "Geetanjali ". At the time of translating “Geetanjali", Khalid didn't have any authentic translation of the same book so that he might be at least guided and would adopted in translation. Khalid as a versatile and challenging writer had selected a new way which was completely new and strange but particularly its charm and eloquence could not be denied.

Abstract

We present an analysis on the heavy flavor hadron decay electrons with charm and beauty contributions decomposed via a data driven method in p+p and Pb+Pb collisions at sNN = 5.02 TeV at LHC. The transverse momentum pT spectra, nuclear modification factor RAA and azimuthal anisotropic flow v2 distributions of electrons from charm and beauty decays are obtained. We find that the electron RAA from charm (RAAc→e) and beauty (RAAb→e) decays are suppressed at pT>2.0 GeV/c in Pb+Pb collisions, which indicates that charm and beauty interact with and lose their energy in the hot-dense medium. A less suppression of RAAb→e than RAAc→e at 2.0

Abstract

The SND@LHC detector experiment is located at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), about 480 m downstream of the ATLAS interaction point. The detector is designed to measure, for the first time ever, high-energy neutrinos produced at the LHC in the pseudorapidity region of 7.2<η<8.4, which is inaccessible to other LHC experiments. The detector comprises a hybrid system that incorporates multiple components. The detector includes a 830 kg target composed of tungsten plates arranged in alternating layers with nuclear emulsion and electronic trackers: this arrangement functions as an electromagnetic calorimeter. Following the electromagnetic calorimeter, there is a hadronic calorimeter and a muon identification system. The detector possesses the ability to differentiate interactions involving all three neutrino flavours, enabling investigations into the physics of heavy flavour production in the forward region. This research is particularly significant for future circular colliders and high-energy astrophysical neutrino experiments. Furthermore, the detector has the ability to search for the scattering of Feebly Interacting Particles. The detector started operating during the LHC Run 3, and it collected a total of ∼39 fb−1 in 2022. The detector aims to collect approximately 250 fb−1 in the whole of Run 3.

We review the present status and the future prospects for the measurements of the Higgs Yukawa couplings to light quarks and charm. A special focus is given to new proposed off-shell probes, which offer promising and complementary opportunities to test light quark Yukawas in triboson final states. Additionally, a new off-shell strategy to test the charm Yukawa coupling in the final state with two bosons plus a charm and a jet is considered. Starting from the imperative to not just read, but to speak lyric poems out loud, this paper considers ways in which poems change depending on who utters them. Beyond the familiar distinction between the poem's author and the lyrical “I” — the voice in which the poet chooses to utter the poem — any performer who speaks a poem also impersonates the text. Reading is the first act of interpretation; others follow. Sound is an indispensable constitutive aspect of the lyric poem, too often neglected. Each reading of a poem can turn into a momentary ec-stasis.

Abstract

This thesis describes two pieces of work. The first is a study of the resolution of the LHCb vertex locator throughout Run 1. The second comprises analyses to measure the charm mixing and CP violation observables A_{Gamma} and y_{CP}.An estimate of the resolution of the LHCb vertex locator is required for use in the track fits. A method to measure the resolution with collision data has been developed and tested. The performance of the sub-detector throughout Run 1 of the LHC has been assessed. A significant degrading of the resolution has been seen. The effects of this on the track reconstruction has been examined with little change in the measured quantities being observed. The measurement of indirect CP violation in neutral D meson transitions has been measured through the observables A_{Gamma} and y_{CP}, using 1fb^{-1} of pp collisions with a centre of mass energy 7TeV, collected by the LHCb detector in 2011.A_{Gamma} describes the CP asymmetry of the lifetime of the D^0 decaying to a CP eigenstate (KK or pipi). The analysis documented here yields A_{Gamma} = (-0.17+-0.54)x10^{-3} when the measurements are combined. This is the world's best measurement and represented a factor of four improvement over the previous best result. The observable y_{CP} compares the effective lifetimes of the Cabibbo favoured decay D^0→Kpi and the transition to a CP eigenstate (KK or pipi). The unblinded result obtained in this document, averaged over both final states is y_{CP} = (5.61+-1.56)x10^{-3}. This result is commensurate with the world average central value within 1.25 standard deviations and has significance of 3.6 standard deviations relative to zero.

We propose the generalized multipomeron exchange model for multiparticle production in high-energy proton–proton, proton–nucleus and heavy-ion collisions. For all of these systems, we consider collectivity effects based on the quark–gluon string fusion concept, where new types of particle-emitting sources—strings with higher tension—are produced. We obtained the model parameters using the data on the multiplicity dependence of the mean transverse momentum of charged particles in p p and p p ¯ collisions over a wide energy range (from ISR to LHC). We calculated the yields of strange, multi-strange and charm particles as a function of multiplicity for p p , p- P b and P b - P b collisions at the LHC energy and compared the results with the experimental data. Una de las principales formas de contaminación de la leche con micotoxinas es el consumo de alimentos fermentados que se encuentran contaminados con mohos principalmente de Aspergillus spp., los cuales producen toxinas que pueden llegar a constituirse como un problema para la salud publica debido a su estabilidad térmica y química. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue detectar las concentraciones de aflatoxina M1 en muestras de leche de vacas en tanques de enfriamiento en cuatro municipios del departamento de Boyacá durante un año, determinando las variaciones de acuerdo con la temporada. Se realizó un estudio de corte longitudinal, descriptivo cuantitativo. Se seleccionaron aleatoriamente cuatro tanques de enfriamiento de cuatro municipios distintos del departamento; cada uno se muestreó dos veces al mes durante todo el período de estudio y se procesaron mediante metodología Charm Ez Lite . Se realizó un ANDEVA para determinar las diferencias estadísticas entre las concentraciones de la aflatoxina M1 por cada trimestre. Se determinaron diferencias estadísticas entre cada uno de los trimestres del estudio encontrando un porcentaje de positividad de 74,06% del total de muestras positivas en los trimestres de verano. 28,12% (108) de las muestras tomadas durante todo el estudio fueron positivas, con concentraciones de la toxina que oscilaron entre 0,5 y 2,0 μg/Kg de leche. Se determinó por primera vez en el departamento de Boyacá las concentraciones y variaciones estacionales de aflatoxina M1 en muestras de tanques de enfriamiento de leche, encontrando las mayores concentraciones y número de casos positivos de aflatoxina M1 en los meses de verano.

The main scope of the paper is to review the construction method of (multi-)regional input–output tables (RIOTs) in the Czech Republic at the NUTS 3 regional level. We compare the estimation of regional IO tables based on a modified cross-hauling adjusted regionalisation method (CHARM) applied by the authors with application of the hybrid approach of (Sixta and Vltavská in Stat Stat Econ J 97:4–14, 2017) from the Department of Statistics at the University of Economics in Prague. The aim of the presented paper is to contribute to the discussion about the suitability of alternative methodological approaches from the perspective of quality and time. We assume that despite the lack of official, published RIOTs by state statistical offices, the existing methodology of the relatively simpler non-survey CHARM method represents an adequate option for the generation of regional input–output tables suitable for further analytical research. 36. Rare and challenging charm decays at LHCb

Abstract

This thesis presents two studies of charged charm meson decays using proton- proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1, recorded by the LHCb experiment. A search for D(s)&plus; → π&plus;μ&plus;μ- decays is performed. Rare decays of charged charm mesons have not previously been observed unlike their counterpart B meson and kaon decays. Such decays are c → u quark transitions and take place via loop diagrams within the Standard Model. Measurements of their branching fractions are an indirect test of New Physics, whose virtual contributions may enhance such quantities. No signals are observed and the 90&percnt; (95&percnt;) CL limits on the branching fractions, the most stringent to date, are found to be, B(D&plus; → π&plus;μ&plus;μ-) &LT; 2.9 (3.3) × 10-8, B(Ds&plus; → π&plus;μ&plus;μ-) &LT; 1.76 (1.91) × 10-7. The charge asymmetry measurement of D+ → π+π0 using π0 → e&plus;e-γ decays is also described. Charge asymmetry in the Standard Model is expected to be small for charm meson decays. Any measured deviation from zero would be evidence of New Physics. This decay has not previously been observed at a hadron collider and the measurement acts as a 'proof of principle' study allowing a future analysis to examine the decay mode. No evidence of CP violation is found.

Abstract

This thesis presents a measurement of the charm mixing parameters xD and yD in prompt D0→ K 0S π&plus; π− decays using 1 fb-1 of data collected by the LHCb experiment during 2011. Mixing in charm is predicted to be small within the Standard Model, but there are significant uncertainties associated with calculating the long range contributions to the decay. Recent measurements made by LHCb and others have confirmed that mixing in charm exists at a rate of less than 1 &percnt;. With LHCb due to collect more data and Belle II being commissioned, the reduction of systematic uncertainties will become increasingly important. The D0→ K 0S π&plus; π− decay provides sensitivity to both the magnitude and relative sign between the mixing parameters. It is also one of the few channels that can measure xD directly. It is therefore crucial to study this mode in detail as more data becomes available. The work presented in this thesis utilises a model-independent description of the K 0S π&plus; π− Dalitz plot decay for the first time in the context of charm mixing. Previous mixing measurements with this final state have used a Dalitz plot amplitude model, and the associated systematic uncertainty is not straight forward to estimate or control. In its place, this analysis uses external, statistically-limited measurements of the strong-phase difference between D0 and ¯D0 obtained by CLEO as input. In addition, a data-driven technique is used to correct for decay time biases induced by the selection removing any systematic effects due to extracting this from simulated data. As the amount of available data increases, both of these techniques will become vital to improving our understanding of mixing in charm. In the CP convention used by Babar and adopted for this thesis, the measured mixing parameters are xD = -(0.863 ± 0.527 (stat.) ± 0.171 (syst.)) &percnt;, yD = -(0.026 ± 0.463 (stat.) ± 0.134 (syst.)) &percnt;. Both xD and yD are consistent with the current world averages.

The Oxford English Dictionary dates the first reference to “cute” in the sense of “attractive, pretty, charming” to 1834. More recently, Sianne Ngai has offered a critical overview of the cuteness of the twentieth-century avant-garde within the context of consumer culture. But if cuteness can get under the skin, what kinds of surfaces does it best infiltrate, particularly in the framework of historical forms, events, and objects that traditionally have been read as emergences around “big” aesthetics of formal symmetries, high affects, and resemblances? The Retrofuturism of Cuteness seeks to undo the temporal strictures surrounding aesthetic and affective categories, to displace a strict focus on commodification and cuteness, and to interrogate how cuteness as a minor aesthetics can refocus our perceptions and readings of both premodern and modern media, literature, and culture. Abstract

The features of the written existence of charm tradition are considered. The texts from the so-called “cherished notebooks,” which are understood as a kind of manuscript collections created by Russian peasants in the territory of the Ulyanovsk Volga region, mainly by women, in the second half of the 20th - early 21st centuries, are analyzed. It is shown that these notebooks include primarily texts intended for home worship: prayers, Psalms, spiritual verses, etc. It is noted that in some of them there are also traditional charms and prayers that functioned as charms. The material for this research was “cherished notebooks” collected in the period from 1995 to 2008 during folklore expeditions of the Department of Literature of Ulyanovsk State Pedagogical University named after I. N. Ulyanov and stored in the archive of scientific and educational center “Traditional culture and folklore of the Ulyanovsk Volga region.” This article presents the results of the analysis of data on the owners of “cherished notebooks”: the division by sex and age. The geography of this tradition is reported. The content and structure of notebooks are characterized. Attention is paid to the typology of charms recorded in the “cherished notebooks.”

Abstract

We review the present status and the future prospects for the measurements of the Higgs Yukawa couplings to light quarks and charm. A special focus is given to new proposed off-shell probes, which offer promising and complementary opportunities to test light quark Yukawas in triboson final states. Additionally, a new off-shell strategy to test the charm Yukawa coupling in the final state with two bosons plus a charm and a jet is considered. First estimates for the HL-LHC and the FCC-hh sensitivities on the channel are presented, showing encouraging results.

Abstract

International audience; The Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB energy-asymmetric e+e− collider is a substantial upgrade of the B factory facility at the Japanese KEK laboratory. The design luminosity of the machine is 6⋅1035cm−2s−1 and the Belle II experiment aims to ultimately record 50ab−1 of data, a factor of 50 more than its predecessor. With this data set, Belle II will be able to measure the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements with unprecedented precision and explore flavor physics with B and D mesons, and τ leptons. Belle II has also a unique capability to search for low-mass dark matter and low-mass mediators. In this work, I will review the latest results from Belle II.

46. Searches for CP violation in D+ to K-K+pi+ decays at the LHCb experiment

Abstract

This thesis documents searches for direct CP violation in the Cabibbo-suppressed D+ to K-K+pi+ decay at the LHCb experiment. Two complementary analyses are described. Direct CP-violating asymmetries are predicted to exist in singly Cabibbo-suppressed charm decays with magnitudes of up to O(0.001) in the Standard Model, and can be enhanced to the percent level by contributions from new physics. No such asymmetry has yet been observed. The LHCb detector is a forward spectrometer with a precise vertex detector and powerful particle identification capabilities, designed to collect large, pure samples of charm and $B$ decays. Data collected at LHCb in 2010 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35pb^-1 are used to perform a model-independent search for direct CP violation in the D+ to K-K+pi+ decay. The Dalitz plot is divided into bins and a chi^2 test of the compatibility of the dataset with no CP violation is performed. No evidence of CP violation is found. A second search for CP violation in the region of the D+ to K-K+pi+ Dalitz plot around the phi resonance is described. The charge asymmetry in this decay is calculated and compared to that in the control channel D+ to Ks(pi+pi-)pi+. The 1.0fb^-1 of data collected at LHCb in 2011 are used. The CP-violating asymmetry is found to be (-0.04+/-0.14+/-0.14)% where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. A new observable sensitive to CP violation that varies across the phi resonance is defined and measured, and is consistent with no CP violation at the current level of sensitivity. In addition, the CP-violating asymmetry in the decay Ds+ to Ks pi+ is determined to be (0.61+/-0.83+/-0.14)%. There is no evidence for CP violation in either channel. The prospects for new results using data collected in 2012 are very promising and a significant improvement in our understanding of these decays is anticipated.

Abstract

The strong Coulomb field created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is expected to produce a rapidity-dependent difference (Δv2) in the second Fourier coefficient of the azimuthal distribution (elliptic flow, v2) between D0 (u‾c) and D‾0 (uc‾) mesons. Motivated by the search for evidence of this field, the CMS detector at the LHC is used to perform the first measurement of Δv2. The rapidity-averaged value is found to be 〈Δv2〉=0.001±0.001(stat)±0.003(syst) in PbPb collisions at sNN=5.02TeV. In addition, the influence of the collision geometry is explored by measuring the D0 and D‾0mesons v2 and triangular flow coefficient (v3) as functions of rapidity, transverse momentum (pT), and event centrality (a measure of the overlap of the two Pb nuclei). A clear centrality dependence of prompt D0 meson v2 values is observed, while the v3 is largely independent of centrality. These trends are consistent with expectations of flow driven by the initial-state geometry.

Abstract

The LHCb experiment, based at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, is primarily designed to make precision measurements of the decays of heavy flavour hadrons, such as B and D mesons. This thesis is composed of two parts: the first consists of two studies of LHCb's vertex locator (VELO) and the second describes the development of methods for recording the decay D0->K-mu+nu_mu. The first VELO study involves calibration and monitoring of the gain (i.e. the detector response to input charge from particles). We propose a robust method to measure the gain response of each silicon sensor using calibration bits output by the sensors, and a method to recalibrate the gain simple enough to be followed by non-expert VELO users. This is followed by an investigation into into the prospects of using the VELO to perform particle identification using the characteristic energy deposition of each particle species (dE/dx). Finally, studies into the development of a trigger and a so-called 'stripping line' for recording D0->K-mu+nu_mu decays is presented. The relatively high cross-section for charm decays in LHCb mean this decay (with a branching fraction of 3%) occurs frequently, and the challenge of a trigger is to reduce this to a rate acceptable to write to disk. Finally, based on a sample of data from July and August 2011, the measured q 2 distribution for this decay is compared to the simple single-pole theoretical model, and the pole mass is measured to bem_pole=2.35 + 0.81 - 0.35 GeV/c 2.

Abstract

The lack of subnational trade data has dampened the development of reliable regional and multiregional models for regional policy development. So, most researchers and vendors of regional and interregional economic models continue to rely on location quotients, supply–demand pool techniques, or minor modifications of them, despite knowing that they under‐estimate interregional trade. In this piece, we analyse the relative viability of estimates of intraregional trade—so called "regional purchase coefficients" (RPCs). We do so for manufacturing sectors in 28 EU countries using the World Input–Output Database. We introduce an RPC‐estimating technique using a quasi‐binomial regression approach for goods‐producing industries; we apply standard supply/demand ratios as RPCs for service‐based industries. We then apply the estimates to an aggregate EU input–output (I‐O) table and measure how closely the results approximate the I‐O tables (direct requirements matrices) for each of the 28 EU nations. We compare these findings to those obtained by other conventional approaches. We also evaluate their ability to replicate the country Leontief inverses and output multipliers.
