Learning the periodic table of elements can pose a challenge for students due to the complex organization and relationships between the different elements. Game-based interventions have been shown in past studies to be one of the feasible ways to overcome this challenge. In this research, a tabletop game, called "Little Periodic" was developed to improve students' chemical representation and conceptual understanding. Following the five phases of the ADDIE model - Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation - the study first analyzed students' needs and identified key concepts for mastery. Additionally, an overview of the five phases is discussed in detail within this study, providing insight into the systematic process to develop and evaluate the tabletop game. Three teachers were interviewed to see the appropriate content that will be included in the tabletop game based on the "Dokumen Standard Kurikulum dan Pentaksiran (DSKP)." A tabletop game was designed and developed that could be used in physical learning environments. To evaluate the effectiveness of the developed tabletop game, validation forms and questionnaires were administered to three validator experts. The results indicated that the tabletop game was valid and effective, with high scores for content suitability, potential effectiveness, and overall satisfaction. The feedback received from chemistry teachers indicated a significant level of satisfaction with the tabletop game. The developed tabletop games can be employed in various learning situations, including in-person learning, and the effects of tabletop games need to further be investigated to ensure and enhance students to achieve deeper learning outcomes.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among pre-service science teachers' global scientific literacy and various variables within the scope of the structural equation model. Since the relations among the variables were investigated in the structural model established for this study, correlational research methodology was applied. The application was carried out with 294 pre-service teachers studying in the departments of chemistry, physics, biology and elementary science education of a state university. The data of the study were obtained with the scales of global scientific literacy, the perception of science process skills, the inquiry skills, the self-directed learning readiness in laboratory, the attitude scale towards the laboratory and the personal information questionnaire. Within the framework of structural equation modeling, the causal and relational analyses of the data were examined. The results showed that the proposed model of the relationship among global scientific literacy and the variables predicting global scientific literacy was also found to be compatible with the data, and the entire model was confirmed except for the attitude towards the laboratory. In this context, it can be claimed that these variables play an essential role in pre-service teachers' being global scientifically literate.

This study aims to determine the feasibility of Instagram-based chemistry learning media and the results of increasing student interest in learning acid-base material in everyday life with a multi-representation approach. The method used in this study is the ADDIE research and development model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). The research population is SMAN 3 Sidoarjo students, with the sample used being 89 students who carry out learning using Instagram in acid-base material in everyday life. Quantitative data was obtained from material and media validation results, as well as an analysis of student interest in learning before and after using the media. Qualitative data were obtained by analyzing descriptive questions of student learning interest in chemistry questionnaires. The results of the research on developing Instagram-based chemistry learning media on acid-base materials in everyday life with a multi-representation approach were obtained: 1) the feasibility of learning media developed based on the results of the assessment of materials and media by expert validators was included in the very feasible category; 2) the increase in students' learning motivation is in the medium category with a standard gain value of 0.40.

GCSE examinations (taken by students aged 16 years in England) are not intended to be speeded (i.e. to be partly a test of how quickly students can answer questions). However, there has been little research exploring this. The aim of this research was to explore the speededness of past GCSE written examinations, using only the data from scored responses to items from a sample of 340 GCSE components. Speededness was calculated as the average (mean) percentage marks lost from the longest string of unanswered items at the end of each student's examination paper. The potential impact of student ability on examination completion patterns was taken into account. The data suggested that most GCSEs analysed were unlikely to have been speeded. This method of exploring the speededness of exams using only scored responses has potential (although there are limitations), and it can flag potentially problematic components for further investigation.

This research explores the development, execution, and student feedback on a multi-themed digital escape room (ER) activity, designed for teaching medicinal chemistry during the COVID-19 pandemic. It aimed to examine students' perceptions of the ER activity, focusing on its effectiveness in enriching students' understanding of medicinal chemistry and increasing their engagement level. Implemented in a synchronous online lecture for third-year pharmacy students, this ER activity was designed with the intention of fostering active learning and teamwork. A total of 184 students participated in various medicinal chemistry-themed challenges, using puzzles on a virtual whiteboard and breakout rooms for team discussions. The findings gathered from the post-implementation survey highlight the impactful learning outcomes associated with a replicable ER activity designed for online medicinal chemistry courses. This innovative teaching strategy not only cultivated a deeper understanding of key medicinal topics among students (mean=4.36) but also enhanced their collaborative skills through increased peer interaction (mean=3.73). They also reported higher level of engagement due to the interesting activities (mean=4.53). The quantitative results were affirmed by the qualitative feedback obtained from the open-ended questions, indicating a consistently positive learning experience and student reception towards the ER implementation. Although they encountered obstacles like stress, internet issues, and unfamiliarity with the ER format, more than 70% of the students agreed that the ER activity was a highly effective learning tool. This digital ER activity also demonstrates promise as an educational tool to encourage active learning and enhance students' motivation in learning medicinal chemistry. The study has showcased the potential benefits of integrating digital ERs into traditional teaching methods, especially for catering to the preferences of Generation Z students in a collaborative learning environment. In addition, the research offers valuable insights into the use of ERs in pharmacy education, contributing to the scarce literature on ER applications in medicinal chemistry and opening avenues for further research on ER-based educational strategies.

This study aims to investigate the applicability and effectiveness of the peer instruction method on teaching the subject of acids and bases at the 12th-grade level. In addition, it aims to determine the effect of peer instruction on students' attitudes towards chemistry and in-class discussion, and to examine students' opinions regarding peer instruction post-implementation. The sample of the study consisted of 21 students studying in their 12th grade at a private high school. During the research process, the unit of acids and bases was covered by the researcher using the peer instruction method and the implementation was completed over a 5-week period. The study was designed as an action research, with both qualitative and quantitative data collected and examined. The study's quantitative data were collected through the Acids-Bases Concept Test (ABCT), Chemistry Attitude Scale (CAS), Argumentativeness Scale (AS), and concept questions, while the qualitative data were collected through the Method Opinion Scale (MOS), semistructured interview, and observation. The analysis of the data was carried out using quantitative and qualitative methods. The results showed that there was a notable increase in the academic achievement of the students after the implementation. Furthermore, the results obtained from ABCT and semi-structured interviews indicated that peer instruction improved the students' conceptual learning, and was also effective in eliminating their misconceptions. Although the pretest-posttest scores of the CAS and AS did not demonstrate a considerable statistical difference, the observation and semi-structured interview data highlighted that the students' attitudes towards chemistry and in-class discussion increased positively. At the end of the implementation, it was observed that the students' attitudes towards the peer instruction method were positive and that the students considered it to be very useful and effective.

Due to the difficulty of chemical compounds to visualize, augmented reality (AR) integrated with mobile learning has been developed as an alternative media for studying chemistry. This study aims to analyze the use of AR-integrated mobile learning in chemistry education from a bibliometric perspective in the last decade. A total of 225 articles were retrieved and analyzed from the Scopus database in the period from January 2012 to September 2022. The results of the analysis indicated that in the range of 2012-2022, the highest number of publications occurred in 2021, with the United States as the most productive country with a total of 54 publications, followed by China, Indonesia, and Japan. Wojciechowski, R., is the most frequently cited author, followed by Cai, S. "Augmented reality" is the keyword that appears most frequently in publications. This study presents useful findings that can serve as a guide for educators, scholars, policymakers, and educational designers for future research or reference in this area regarding current trends.

Past studies have explored student self-perception within chemistry courses. Various factors have been explored including course level, student academic background, and gender. However, it appears that there are few (if any) studies that have looked at whether students are aware of how they have performed previously in the course. Through a study over a two-year period, students at all levels (freshman through M.S.) of a chemistry program were surveyed and asked to self-report predictions of their score on examinations as well as several other items including their recall of previous course grades. At all levels, poorer performing students were less likely to be able to recall previous examination scores.

This study focuses on developing a five-tier chemical diagnostic test based on a computer-based test with 11 assessment categories with an assessment score from 0 to 10. A total of 20 items produced were validated by education experts, material experts, measurement experts, and media experts, and an average index of the Aiken test > 0.70 was obtained. The validation results were tested on 580 respondents and analyzed using the Generalized Partial Credit Model (GPCM) Item Response Theory (IRT) type. The results of the analysis show that all of the items meet the requirements to be said to be valid for the model; the evidence of the value this: RMSEA < 0.08, CFI > 0.87, SRMR < 0.10, GFI > 0.90, NFI > 0.90, NNFI > 0.90, IFI > 0.90, TLI > 0.90, and RFI > 0.90, and all items were obtained has a p.S_X2 value greater than 0.05 which indicates that all items developed are fit and by the GPCM model. Student giftedness is a complex, developmentally dynamic and contextual phenomenon that teachers confront every day. In the classroom, teachers often meet students who have exceptional potential or achieve very high learning goals. The aim of this study is to illustrate the evaluation of inquiry-based learning activities in a specific context (Diversity in Science towards Social Inclusion learning modules) implemented in a non-formal educational setting for gifted students in relation to their level of individual interest and their autonomous and controlled motivation, comparing different groups of students. We investigate how these activities affect the students' attitudes towards inquiry-based learning, their situational interest and their interest in science careers. A total of 264 Slovenian lower secondary school students participated in the study. The students participated in non-adapted and adapted activities based on the inquiry-based learning approach. The data were collected using pre- and post-activity questionnaires. Participation in the study, which took place in the period between the 2021/22 and the 2022/23 school years, was voluntary. The data was collected anonymously and used for research purposes only. The results show several statistically significant differences in how students' level of individual interest, autonomous motivation and controlled motivation for learning chemistry affects their attitudes towards inquiry-based learning, their situational interest in Diversity in Science towards Social Inclusion activities and their interest in science careers. For the gifted and non-gifted students who participated in "Forensics Science" lab activities before and after the adaptations to the modules, the results related to their attitudes towards inquiry-based learning and situational interest are also reported. Thus, the results of the study provide useful insights for researchers in the field of chemistry education as well as for chemistry teachers in lower and upper secondary schools. The presented study is a good example of best practices that chemistry teachers can apply in teaching chemistry, thus enabling all students, not only the gifted ones, to learn chemistry using the inquiry-based learning approach.

Throughout the world, schools are visited by students with different native languages. Therefore, the linguistic competencies of the students are diverse. Dealing with this diversity is a great challenge for teachers in general, including in science subjects. To face this challenge, all institutions involved in education should adapt their teaching and learning to linguistic diversity to foster student's language competencies. Non-formal education, such as student laboratories, could enhance formal chemistry education and support students in learning the subject's contents and acquiring language competencies. To this purpose, language-sensitive and language-supportive learning settings for different chemical topics and contexts are developed to enable all students to participate actively and foster language competencies. The learning settings are implemented and evaluated at the Ludwigsburg University of Education (Germany) using a cyclical approach based on Participatory Action Research. Data from 147 students from seven learning groups of various grade levels and school types were collected before and after they experienced the work in student laboratories. The focus was on students' situational interests and their views on offered language-sensitive and language-supportive methods, tools, and activities. The data shows that the approach has a positive effect on students' situational interest. Methods that were especially helpful for the students are filtered. On this basis, implications are drawn for the application to other non-formal education offers

Scholars as exemplars and their linked eponyms play a significant role in education. Since the discovery of the periodic law in 1869, perceptions of Mendeleev and his eponyms may have shifted. With the aim of assessing the historical and current portrayal of Mendeleev and his eponyms in chemistry textbooks and on the Internet, content analysis of textbooks, including Soviet and contemporary Russian (11) and Ukrainian (16), was conducted. Additionally, an Internet search in 7 languages was conducted to assess the prevalence of Mendeleevian eponyms online. Primary Mendeleevian eponyms are predominantly utilized in the Russian segment of the Internet. While Mendeleev's portrayal held significance in mid-20th-century Soviet chemistry textbooks, his presence has dwindled in current Russian and Ukrainian textbooks. This decline is attributed to the obsolescence of associated chemical realities, the disputed priority of Mendeleev, and an ambiguous attitude towards him. The implications of this decline include loss of historical context, reduced memorization aids, impact on critical thinking, disruption of continuity, and reduced humanism in education. The research underscores the importance of a balanced and inclusive approach to science education, recognizing contributions from scientists of diverse backgrounds and perspectives, and highlights the interconnected nature of science education and international relations.

Redox reaction is a core chemical concept. However, its abstract nature makes it very difficult for students. Students' conceptual structure reflects their mastery of concepts, which helps teachers implement targeted educational strategies. This study aimed to explore the conceptual structures of redox reaction held by students (grades 10 to 12) by employing MDS and HCA. A total of 606 students participated, with 195 students in 10th grade, 202 in 11th grade, and 209 in 12th grade. The results indicated that three-dimensional solutions were appropriate for the conceptual structures of 10th and 12th graders, while 11th graders demonstrated two-dimensional solutions. All students grouped the 15 concepts related to redox reaction into two large clusters: metrology and the redox reaction process. Moreover, both 10th and 12th graders further subdivided the 15 concepts into four subclusters: metrology, oxidation process, reduction process, and chemical reaction. Students' conceptual structures were rational across all three grades. The conceptual structures of 10th and 12th graders were more refined than those of 11th graders, and there was no significant difference between the conceptual structures of 10th and 12th graders. 11th graders learned about electrochemistry and tended to confuse concepts related to redox reaction with those related to electrochemistry.

Science identity, encompassing perceptions of competence, interest, and recognition in science, alongside learning self-efficacy reflecting confidence to master science skills, are key drivers of outcomes. However, developmental patterns likely vary across contexts. Participants were 512 Chinese students spanning grades 1-3 who completed the Science Identity Scale and Science Learning Self-Efficacy Scale, with physics, chemistry, and biology achievement scores gathered. A Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Model assessed relationships. Results substantiated psychometrics for motivational measures. The model indirectly predicting achievement via first-order discipline-specific paths explained more variance than direct second-order effects. Effects significantly varied across groups stratified by grade and region. Interest and conceptual knowledge drove physics and chemistry success, while higher-order skills enhanced biology achievement overall. However, relationships differed within subgroups, suggesting personalized motivational support needs--self-belief/competence foundations for struggling learners, conceptual development for those with high prior achievement, and intrinsic enrichment for disinterested students. Results detail complex motivational profiles underlying science achievement requiring tailored identity safety and self-efficacy scaffolding alongside conceptual and skill-building for excellence across scientific disciplines. Motivational support systems may spur more equitable and optimal science outcomes among diverse adolescent learners.

The rapid development of information and communication technology demands the production of digital products. This study aims to produce a digital instructional book based on Balinese local cultures to enhance the learning outcomes of high school students. The development of this book used the ADDIE model. The analysis phase included an analysis of the chemistry curriculum, teachers' and students' opinions about digital books, digital learning, and Balinese local cultures related to the chemistry content. The design phase included creating a framework and preparing a digital instructional book based on Balinese local cultures. The development phase included validation by content, language, and media experts. The implementation phase included testing the practicality and effectiveness of the book. The evaluation phase was carried out at all phases of the ADDIE model. The characteristics of this book were that it was made in a digital form and integrated with local Balinese cultures. It met the criteria of being a very valid category based on content, language, and media aspects. It also met a practical and effective category to improve students' learning outcomes. It is very useful to enhance chemistry learning outcomes in the era of the Industrial Revolution 4.0.

Now days, the level of students' engagement in secondary school chemistry is low. The aim of this study was then to enhance student chemistry engagement through simulation-integrated 7E context-based instructional strategy and compared its efficacy with 7E context-based instructional strategy, simulation-integrated conventional teaching approach, and conventional teaching approach. For the quantitative part, 15-item chemistry engagement scale was utilized to collect data from 229 grade 10 students as part of a quasi-experimental pre/post-test non-equivalent control group design. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were utilized. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect qualitative data. The study's findings revealed that, when compared to the other instructional strategies, the simulation-integrated 7E context-based instructional strategy was the most successful at raising students' overall engagement and its dimensions. This study implies that implementing a simulation-integrated 7E context-based instructional strategy can boost students' overall and individual levels of engagement in chemistry. Thus, to enhance chemistry learning, teachers may progressively move from the conventional approach to the use of simulation-integrated 7E context-based approach over the other strategies.

This research is a systematic literature review study that aims to explore the evidence in publications that report on the types of misconceptions experienced by students in learning chemistry by providing types of students' chemical misconceptions based on levels and obtaining the correct formulation of misconceptions so that they can be used as a basis for overcoming them. The collected publications came from Scopus-indexed publications in journals, Conference Proceedings, Books, and Book Series from 2006 to 2021. Data analysis used was thematic analysis and data extraction and publication selection procedures using the PRISMA modification method, which consisted of four phases: identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion. The linkages between all the literature with misconceptions were analyzed using VOSviewer software to visualize bibliometrics. There are four chemical materials with the most misconceptions experienced by students: chemical equilibrium with seven studies, covalent bonds with six studies, acid-base theory with five studies, and materials and their classifications with five studies. Countries actively researching misconceptions are the United States, Turkey, Taiwan, South Korea, Ireland, England, Colombia, Macedonia, India, Thailand, Slovakia, Indonesia, Spain, Malaysia, Finland, and Ukraine. The research findings provide an overview of chemical materials that students often experience misconceptions about and the types of misconceptions about these chemical materials. This study aims to determine the need for multitiered diagnostic instruments to identify misconceptions and their causes, as well as multi-representational profiles in chemistry lessons starting from grade 10 in the initial to the final material for grade 12. The data analysis technique used in this research is descriptive, namely descriptive analysis. Systematic and factual facts are investigated by collecting data, processing and analyzing. The instruments used have been validated by expert lecturers and received improvements in the diction of the question sentences. The subjects used in this study were several chemistry teachers in East Java, totalling 67 teachers who were taken by random sampling. Data collection was carried out through questionnaires distributed using the media google form. The results of the analysis found that diagnostic assessments in chemistry subjects were made up to the macroscopic, submicroscopic, and symbolic levels with a percentage of 93%; it is necessary to apply diagnostic assessments to all chemistry learning topics with a percentage of 61%, diagnostic assessments in chemistry subjects must be carried out in a multitiered manner level 5 with a percentage of 79%.

Augmented Reality (AR) has emerged in our educational paradigm as a new tool to accelerate change in the teaching and learning process. This technology can improve students' visualisation skills, which helps them understand abstract concepts, especially in Chemistry. Furthermore, visualisation skills help improve students' critical thinking. This study was conducted with 16 secondary students. Before and after the intervention, students were required to complete a Purdue Spatial Visualisation Test to measure their visualisation skills. During four weeks of intervention, students explored the content using a mobile augmented reality application for learning chemical bonds (called CBOND) and completed critical thinking tasks each week. This study employed data mining using a decision tree to predict the path to improving students' visualisation and critical thinking skills in learning chemical bonds. The results revealed that CBOND had a significant effect on students' visualisation and critical thinking development. Therefore, this study proved that augmented reality technology could help students to visualise abstract concepts, especially in Chemistry, and in turn, foster their higher level of critical thinking.

This study aimed to develop a two-tier test to identify misconceptions of pre-service teachers about chemical equilibrium. The sample was made up of 135 pre-service chemistry teachers at Farhangian University in Iran (70 female and 65 male) who were spending the final semester of the eighth semester of the teacher training programme. After analysing the distribution pattern of the participants' answers in the first and second tiers, fifteen misconceptions were identified. A new misconception was identified for the first time, which we called the common ion effect which was held by about 50% of participants. Gender was a significant factor in the rate of misconceptions, with male preservice teachers having fewer rate misconceptions compared with females. The results showed that when the first tier or the second tier was considered alone, female participants performed better, but when both tiers were combined, the performance of males was better. However, males had a weaker performance in three questions related to the approach to equilibrium in this situation. These findings will help educators plan their instruction by knowing pre-service teachers' preconceptions about chemical equilibrium.

A didactic sequence is proposed using an infrared puzzle and a didactic questionnaire for the teaching-learning of infrared spectroscopy at the upper secondary level. The didactic sequence that was designed was implemented in person in the subject of Chemistry IV at the high school level, corresponding to the sixth semester of the curriculum of the National School of Sciences and Humanities (CCH), Vallejo Campus, of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. In the didactic sequence, students understand the importance of functional groups where they determine organic compounds, by identifying regularities, properties, and structure of alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, and carboxylic acids. After applying the didactic sequence, a post-test questionnaire was applied, and the results showed that the students significantly improved their knowledge of IR when using the puzzle that allowed them to correctly identify the bands that identify the carbonyl group.

Different goals of high schools and vocational schools in Indonesia become the main factor causing the distinction of preparedness of chemistry teachers in using the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) approach in their teaching. Yet the High School Chemistry Teachers (HSCT) and Vocational School Chemistry Teachers (VSCT) need to have positive perceptions about STEM since it offers students meaningful chemistry learning. Through an explorative survey method, this research investigated in-service chemistry teachers' perspectives toward the potential of STEM learning in high school and vocational schools of chemistry. A number of 131 in-service chemistry teachers (82 HSCT and 49 VSCT) from Yogyakarta, Indonesia was voluntarily participated in this research through a saturated sampling technique. Perception Scale on STEM (PC-STEM) consisting of 54 closed-ended questions and seven open-ended questions were used to collect the data. Data analysis techniques involved one-way MANOVA testing, descriptive statistics, and content analysis with interpretive coding. The findings showed that HSCTs' and VSCTs' perspectives toward STEM were in the good category. Thus, integrated STEM learning is potential to be used in chemistry lessons at high school and vocational school. However, there were not any statistically significant differences between HSCT and VSCT participants' perceptions of how STEM was being used to teach chemistry. Unfortunately, despite their perception being good, both groups of teachers signified a poor experience in applying STEM in their chemistry lessons. Therefore, teachers' professional development program about STEM is needed for chemistry teachers to successfully implement STEM-based chemistry learning.

The study aimed to investigate the effect of computer simulation and animation-integrated instruction on preservice science teacher trainees' conceptual understanding and retention of acid-base chemistry and stoichiometry. A quantitative approach with a pretest-posttest-delayed test quasi-experimental design was used. In the study area, there were only two sections of first-year trainees in the natural science department. So a comprehensive sampling technique of the two intact sections was employed. The two intact classes were randomly assigned to an intervention group (IG) and a comparison group (CG). Data was collected using Acid-Base Chemistry and Stoichiometry Conceptual Understanding of a two-tier multiple-choice Test (ABSCUT). Parametric statistics (independent sample t-test and ANCOVA) were used for the data analysis. The independent sample t-test was used for the pre-test analysis to examine the prerequisite experiences of trainees in the two groups and male and female trainees in the IG before the intervention. The result showed no significant difference between the mean score of the CG and IG. The result also showed no significant difference in the mean score of male and female trainees in the IG. The ANCOVA was used for post-test and delayed test analysis after the intervention. The result indicated that there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups on conceptual understanding, F(1,49)=5.07, p=0.029, partial eta squared=0.094, in favor of IG. This tends to imply the concepts of the trainees who received the intervention outperformed the comparison group. The ANCOVA result also indicated that gender difference has no statistically significant difference in the IG, F(1,24)=3.68, p=0.067. The delayed-test analysis showed that the IG has higher retention than the CG. Based on the results, this study recommended that policymakers, chemistry curriculum experts, chemistry curricular material developers, and practitioners alike consider the application of computer simulation-integrated chemistry instruction to enhance learners' conceptual understanding and retention.

The aim of this study was to develop students' chemical literacy by integrating dilemma stories into a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) project on petroleum. Chemical literacy can help students face future challenges by applying what they learn about chemistry subjects at school to solve problems in their daily lives. A qualitative research method was employed that included interviews, observations, reflective journals, chemical literacy tests, and student activity sheets, as data collection tools. Thirty six secondary school students participated in the research using a project-based approach consisting of five steps: value reflection, problem-solving, project monitoring and evaluation, project development, and transformation. This study used four chemical literacy components according to Shwartz, Ben-Zvi and Hofstein (2006) namely scientific and chemical content knowledge, characteristics of chemistry, chemistry in context, higher-order learning skills, and affective aspect. STEAM integrated with dilemmas stories provides opportunities for students to develop chemical literacy through value reflection, problem solving, and STEAM project. This study uses a dilemma story to understand chemistry concepts whereby students can develop a project by integrating chemistry and STEAM principles. The STEAM Project involved making alternative fuel to find a solution to a problem presented in the dilemma story. The researchers were challenged by the need to find a suitable chemistry-based dilemma story to integrate with a STEAM project while also empowering students and managing time resources.

This project report describes the process of a team of undergraduate researchers (Chemistry and Nursing majors), who analyzed 20th-century medical kits housed at The Columbus Museum (Columbus, GA, USA). Curators and museum personnel were unfamiliar with the contents and needed assistance in identifying the various chemical contents. Items were identified by the Taylor Lab, which was followed by fully elucidating the chemical information in a chemical report and student-curated exhibit. The intent of this project was to help the museum be aware of how to properly curate and store the medical collections for an extended period. Laboratory analyses were executed to determine the composition of the aged items in the collections. The historical context of these kits and their contents provided knowledge of medicine to the community of Columbus, Georgia, in addition to explaining the use of medically related items in the 20th century.

The scope of this preliminary study revolves around investigating the effectiveness of experiential learning in upper-year science laboratory courses in a post-pandemic era. In this study we have explored two key questions: 1. Can experiential learning facilitate independent inquiry in an upper-year undergraduate laboratory in a post-pandemic era? 2. Do incoming students feel prepared to carry out an in-person, hands-on, upper-year undergraduate laboratory experiments in a post-pandemic era? By exploring these questions through student reflections and perceptions in an advanced analytical chemistry inquiry-based laboratory course, we hope to acknowledge the impact the pandemic has had on first- and second-year foundational labs, and on the preparation of students for upper-year undergraduate labs. The shift towards virtual learning during the COVID-19 pandemic may have heavily impacted the development of core wet laboratory skills and thus made it challenging for students to build their confidence and skillset and attain success when challenged at a higher level. Analytical chemistry is one of the chemical materials that is considered difficult by students. The application of multi-representational proximity in delivering analytical chemistry material can make it easier for students to understand the material. The purpose of research and development is to produce Instagram- and TikTok-based learning media products on qualitative analysis materials for class I and II cations with a multi-representational approach, testing the feasibility of learning media in the form of Instagram and TikTok learning content, and to find out the response of students to the learning media. This research uses ADDIE research and development design. The ADDIE development model consists of five stages, namely analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. At the development stage, validation of media and material experts by lecturers of the chemistry department, State University of Malang, as well as teacher chemistry SMKN 7 Malang continued the readability test on 52 students of class XI Analytical Chemistry 1 and 2. The questionnaires used are quantitative, processed with a Likert scale. The results of this research and development are in the form of learning content on the qualitative analysis material of group I and II cations uploaded on Instagram and TikTok, with a "very decent" validation value in general display, receiving a percentage of 84%; in presenting the material, 84%, the "very feasible" category; and in the results of the questionnaire, student responses are classified as "very good," with a percentage of 81%. Instagram- and TikTok-based learning media are very feasible to use, and students show that Instagram- and TikTok-based learning media are very interesting when coupled with explanations interspersed with songs, helping readers who have auditory properties, so that students understand, are interested, and have fun learning with digital methods.

This study aimed to develop and evaluate a web-based TPACK scaffolding for online learning to enhance the TPACK skills of preservice chemistry teachers. The preliminary study identified the lack of a clear perception of TPACK among preservice chemistry teachers. Therefore, we developed a web-based TPACK scaffolding tool consisting of five menus: Home, Instructions, Teaching Materials, TPACK Activity, and Evaluation. The tool provides scaffolding for preservice chemistry teachers to integrate TPACK into chemistry learning, such as a TPACK integrated syllabus, a TPACK integrated lesson plan, and a TPACK integration matrix in chemistry learning. We evaluated the readability and comprehensibility of the web-based TPACK scaffolding using the thinking aloud protocol (TAP) method. In addition, the participants provided suggestions for improving the website, such as adding an instruction button, grouping learning activities according to the sequence of scaffolding strategy steps, and grouping integrated TPACK lesson plans in chemistry learning according to grade levels in high school. The web-based TPACK scaffolding can support and guide preservice chemistry teachers in enhancing their TPACK skills. The tool can educate them about subject-specific pedagogy with TPACK integration and provide examples of TPACK activities that could be utilized in teaching and learning chemistry. The study's findings can enhance preservice teachers' TPACK skills and promote effective integration of technology in chemistry education.

Concepts related to molecular structure are often challenging for students to visualize and comprehend. Augmented reality has emerged as a promising solution to this problem, providing students with opportunities to manipulate and visualize chemical molecular structures to improve their understanding. Furthermore, collaborative learning environments have the potential to enhance student learning by fostering knowledge sharing and collaborative authoring. However, there is a dearth of research exploring students' acceptance of augmented reality in a collaborative learning context. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the technology acceptance of a wearable collaborative augmented reality system in chemistry education among junior high school students. Specifically, 124 students used "Microsoft® HoloLens 2" device to learn about chemical molecular structure. Data was collected using the Extended Technology Acceptance Questionnaire after participants used the system and analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling. The extended model takes knowledge sharing, collaborating learning, and collaborative authoring as exogenous variables with perceived ease of use and perceived usability and finally produces a structural model that leads to behavioral usage intentions. The hypotheses tested in this study were accepted as the relationships were significant. Knowledge sharing, collaborative learning, and collaborative authoring have a positive impact on perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use respectively; and perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use have significant effects on behavioral intention to use respectively. This study conclusively demonstrated the hypothesized relationships. Evidence from these results provides comprehensive insights that can help policymakers and educators better understand the factors influencing the adoption of wearable collaborative augmented reality.

A comprehensive educational framework is provided by the Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate (CDIO) which is particularly relevant to engineering and applied sciences. This paper investigates the application of the CDIO approach in the field of chemistry pedagogy in Vietnam focusing on its adaptability to the current educational demands and its potential to enhance the competency of future teachers. The CDIO approach develops training curricula and outputstandards based on input from teachers,students, alumni and recruitment firms. This study uses the CDIO approach extensively with professional knowledge, social awareness and creative tendencies. The study involved a survey of 240 chemistry teachers and 242 students from various universities across Vietnam. Data were collected through online surveys using Google Forms and processed using SPSS software for statistical analysis. The research analyzed the alignment of practical teaching activities with CDIO standards and developed a framework for experimental practice competency. Findings indicated a robust implementation of the CDIO approach in chemistry pedagogy. In laboratory safety, experimental planning, execution and competence were high. The study shows that the CDIO strategy enhances professional competence and practical abilities in Vietnamese chemistry pedagogy students. It promotes collaboration and personal growth to meet changing educational needs. The CDIO approach could transform chemistry pedagogy in Vietnam suggesting science education reforms and capacity building.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are global action plans that aim to address various problems globally in the social, economic, cultural, energy, and environmental fields. One of the global problems is the significant open unemployment rate due to the gap between graduates and available jobs. Therefore, we need an innovation in learning to train students to develop their competencies. Competency development can be done through chemoentrepreneurship-based chemistry learning (CEP). CEP-based learning is chemistry learning through projects in product manufacturing and marketing. This study aims to measure students' social and vocational skills through CEP learning. This research was conducted at Islamic Senior High School in Rembang, Indonesia. The research subjects were 47 students. The results of the N-gain test showed that the social skills of the experimental and control groups experienced an increase in the low/effective less category. The N-gain value of the experimental group's social skills was 50.06, while the control group was 41.32. The results of the N-gain test for vocational skills in the experimental group were better than those in the control group. The increase in the vocational skills of the experimental group was in the medium/quite effective category (58.32), while the control group experienced a very low/ineffective increase in the category (33.47). As the trend for English as a medium of instruction (EMI) increases, teacher self-efficacy to teach the contents of their teaching materials in an EMI context has become one of the major challenges. This study investigated the self-efficacy of Indonesian non-ELT pre-service teachers to teach in an EMI context. Two Indonesian non-ELT pre-service teachers, in charge of teaching biology and chemistry in English, in a secondary school in Thailand were interviewed to gain an indepth information about their experiences. The data from their teaching reflections and interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis. The study shows that both participants perceived that their self-efficacy to teach in EMI context was quite high despite various obstacles during their teaching practicum. Furthermore, four sources of efficacy information appeared to influence the Indonesian non-ELT pre-service teachers' self-efficacy to teach in the Thailand EMI context. Mastery experience (the personal experience of success) was the most influential source of efficacy information, followed by the other instances of self-efficacy sources including social persuasion, emotional state, and vicarious experience. The implication derived from this study is that the teacher training institutions in Indonesia need to facilitate the pre-service teachers to help them perceive their self-efficacy to teach in EMI context.

Students' attitudes towards Digital Game-Based Learning (DGBL) in developing countries such as Indonesia are rarely investigated despite the fact that digital games are being used in secondary education increasingly. This research aims to explore students' attitudes towards DGBL in chemistry. We used a quantitative study method using a self-reported survey questionnaire. The study included 480 high school students (203 males and 277 females) from various public and private high schools in Indonesia. The present study employed a cross-sectional survey design to collect data in July and August 2023. The DGBL attitude scale was adapted to evaluate students' attitudes. The questionnaire comprised 22 items assessing students' attitudes towards digital game-based learning. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics as well as t-tests and a one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). As a result, students expressed a slightly positive attitude towards digital games in chemistry learning particularly for learning opportunities. The results also showed that there was a significant gap in students' attitudes with regard to gender and the daily duration of smartphone use. However, there was no significant gap regarding students' attitudes towards digital game-based learning. The findings provide valuable insights for game designers and teachers to design and implement educational games that meet student needs and expectations in order to improve learning outcomes. The results are also useful for educators and educational researchers on how demographic factors influence students' DGBL attitudes in chemistry education in developing countries such as Indonesia.

STEM education plays a key role in influencing and orienting students' interests towards STEM fields and careers. This influence is multifaceted, involving not only STEM content and experiences but also teachers, schools, and personal factors. The purpose of this study is to explore the factors impacting the academic performance of 951 tenth grade students in STEM subjects (physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, and information technologies) who are attending public and private schools in two provinces of Turkey. Using a correlational research model, the study assessed how students' personal characteristics, teacher effectiveness and school characteristics affect achievement in STEM courses. Data were collected using the 'Factors Affecting STEM Achievement Questionnaire (FA-STEM-A)', a 20-item questionnaire divided into three sub-dimensions. Analyses focused on the relationships between student characteristics, teaching quality, school infrastructure and STEM performance. Structural equation modelling revealed that positive student characteristics, especially fondness for STEM subjects and confidence in STEM abilities, moderately increase achievement. In contrast, negative factors attributed to teachers and schools, such as inadequate classroom activities, lack of educator expertise, inadequate technological resources, and large class sizes, hindered student performance. These findings emphasize the important influence of both inherent student qualities and external educational conditions in determining STEM education.

This computer game was designed and developed to enhance the skills of high school students in balancing chemical equations. The game simulates a trip to the beach and consists of three missions, ranging from easy to difficult levels, enabling players to engage in a contextual learning experience. The objectives of this computer game development were to compare learning achievement before and after using the game and to evaluate the level of satisfaction in learning through the game. The study sample consisted of 27 high school students in Mathayom Suksa four, selected from a medium-sized school in Pathumthani Province, Thailand, using purposive sampling. The research employed two primary assessment tools: 1) a pretest-posttest to assess the understanding of balancing chemical equations and 2) a satisfaction evaluation form to evaluate the computer game. Data analysis was performed using the mean, standard deviation (S.D.), t-test, and normalized gain (). The findings revealed that the mean learning achievement after using the computer game (13.52) was significantly higher than the mean before using the computer game (11.52) at a significance level of 0.01. The overall normalized gain for the class was at a moderate level. Furthermore, the majority of the participants expressed high satisfaction with a mean score of 4.56, indicating that the computer game was user-friendly and conducive to learning. The content, which presented chemical reactions in daily life within the computer game, was also easily comprehensible. Therefore, it could be effectively utilized to enhance classroom learning and applied to other areas of knowledge.

This study utilized the SEC (Survey of Enacted Curriculum) method to examine the alignment between Chinese high school chemistry curriculum standards (HSCCS) and the assessment of 'Chemical Reaction Principles' in the National College Entrance Examinations (NCEEs). The HSCCS and NCEEs were coded into two-dimensional matrices separately using SPSS, MATLAB, and EXCEL. The alignment coefficients were analyzed both macroscopically and specifically based on two dimensions: themes and cognitive levels. The findings indicated a generally low alignment between NCEEs and HSCCS in the 'Chemical Reaction Principles' domain, and no statistically significant alignment was observed. Comparing Porter alignment coefficients revealed a gradual increase in the overall alignment level between 2018-2022 NCEEs and HSCCS due to curricular reforms. Further specific analyses and comparisons highlighted significant discrepancies between NCEEs and HSCCS concerning themes and cognitive levels. Regarding themes, 'Ionic Reactions and Equilibrium in Aqueous Solutions' showed substantial alignment between NCEEs and HSCCS. However, for 'Application of Ionic Reactions and Equilibrium' and 'Systems and Energy,' NCEEs diverged significantly from or exceeded HSCCS requirements. Concerning cognitive levels, NCEEs demanded higher levels of student cognition compared to HSCCS.

Developing 21st-century skills among students is crucial for their success in college, future careers, and civic engagement. These skills, commonly referred to as the 4Cs (creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving, communication, and collaboration), require teachers to provide tailored learning experiences. This study investigates the factors influencing teachers' selection of pedagogical strategies to foster the integration of the 4Cs, their approach to lesson planning, and the actual implementation of these plans in the classroom. In this qualitative study, three chemistry teachers, self-reporting moderate 4C implementation, participated. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews, analysis of lesson plans, and classroom observations. The findings reveal that teachers take into account student characteristics and learning facility availability when designing 4C-integrated lesson plans. Influencing factors include student attributes, the science topic, and teachers' mastery of the chosen approach. Communication, collaboration, and critical thinking emerge as the most integrated skills, with interactive lectures being the predominant teaching method. The study discusses the implications of these findings for educators and curriculum development.

Higher education continually seeks new approaches to support students with various learning needs. At present, Finland attempts to provide such support through accessibility and reasonable accommodation efforts, but students with learning disabilities may still encounter many barriers in their studies. One approach suggested to meet the needs of a diverse student population is the flipped classroom. While substantial research exists about its benefits and drawbacks, less is known from the perspective of students who have a history of receiving pedagogical support. Therefore, the present study examined the experience and performance of these students in flipped higher education courses. Results indicated no difference in the academic performance of learners with a history of support compared to those without. Students with a history of support needs reported a lower assessment of self-regulation and self-efficacy for learning, and experienced the flipped courses as more difficult. However, they favored more collaboration in general and in the flipped classroom approach in particular. Additionally, regression models indicated that achievement in flipped courses was explained primarily from the lack of regulation and guidance perspectives. These findings suggest new insights for teaching those with learning disabilities, particularly the support a flipped classroom may provide, but developing a more in-depth understanding is warranted.

Chemical bonding is central to explaining many phenomena. Research in chemical education and the Framework for K-12 Science Education (the "Framework") argue for new approaches to learning chemical bonding grounded in (1) using ideas of the balance of electric forces and energy minimization to explain bond formation, (2) using learning progressions (LPs) grounded in these ideas to support learning, and (3) engaging students in 3D learning reflected in integrating the three dimensions of scientific knowledge to make sense of phenomena. The dimensions include disciplinary core ideas, scientific and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts. While the "Framework" describes the theoretical basis of 3D learning, empirical evidence for the development and validation of LPs for 3D learning is limited. This work addresses that issue for the topic of chemical bonding. We develop and validate a 3D construct map for chemical bonding grounded in the idea of balance of electric forces and energy minimization. A construct map represents a finer-grained LP spanning a shorter period and focusing on specific aspects of a larger-scale LP. An NGSS-aligned validated 3D LP has never been reported for the topic of chemical bonding. The LP is based on data from 9th grade Mid-Western and Western students who used the NGSS-aligned curriculum. Multiple validity evidence sources, including interview and item response theory analysis using an assessment tool developed to probe the 3D construct map levels, were used. We demonstrate the feasibility of using the assessment tool for assigning levels to individuals and groups of learners, which is essential for the practical applicability of the 3D construct map and provides teachers with information on how to promote learning. We hope that the 3D LP presented here will serve as a guide to develop instructional and assessment approaches for chemical bonding grounded in the fundamental scientific principles and aligned to NGSS.

Small group interactions and interactions with near-peer instructors such as learning assistants serve as fertile opportunities for student learning in undergraduate active learning classrooms. To understand what students take away from these interactions, we need to understand how and what they learn during the moment of their interaction. This study builds on practical epistemology analysis to develop a framework to study this in-the-moment learning during interactions by operationalizing it through the lens of discourse change and continuity toward three ends. Using video recordings of students and learning assistants interacting in a variety of contexts including remote, in-person, and hybrid classrooms in introductory chemistry and physics at two universities, we developed an analytical framework that can characterize learning in the moment of interaction, is sensitive to different kinds of learning, and can be used to compare interactions. The framework and its theoretical underpinnings are described in detail. In-depth examples demonstrate how the framework can be applied to classroom data to identify and differentiate different ways in which in-the-moment learning occurs.

Teacher educators have focused on designing learning environments 'for' rather than 'with' teacher candidates. However, a co-design collaboration with teacher candidates has been recently suggested as a critical feature for effective teacher education programs. In this study, a co-design team, including preservice science teachers (PSTs) as co-participants of the iterative design process rather than research subjects, collaboratively developed formative assessment (FA) practices based on the approach of conjecture mapping in a chemistry laboratory setting. This study aimed to examine the role of PSTs as co-designers and their contributions to the progressive development of the most robust design of FA practices, drawing on relevant theoretical perspectives and considering the characteristics of a general chemistry laboratory environment. Sixteen PSTs participated in the study for a whole semester. This qualitative-interpretive study employed the following data sources: classroom observations, audio tape recordings of co-design meetings, and field notes. Results under four main themes showed that the PSTs as co-participants can actively engage in and effectively contribute to creating the FA design for their chemistry laboratory investigations. Using conjecture mapping as an approach for critical and reflective thinking on design elements, the PSTs could focus on their own thinking and that of others when making, testing, and revising co-design decisions based on the relevant theory work and empirical findings as the design principles for the FA-embedded laboratory practices. This study has important implications for the inclusion of teacher candidates as active co-designers of high-leverage instructional practices such as FA in science learning settings.

This study investigated how different learning tasks influence students' collaborative interactions in immersive Virtual Reality (iVR). A set of chemistry learning activities was designed with iVR, and 35 pairs of undergraduate students went through the activities. Videos of students' interactions were analysed to identify patterns in students' physical, conceptual, and social interactions. When students were manipulating conceptually familiar virtual objects (several water molecules), they perceived the tasks as a simple extension of prior knowledge and did not attempt to explore the 3D visualisation much. They did not move around to take different perspectives, and conceptual discussions were brief. Their prior power relations (leader-follower) carried over in iVR environments. In contrast, when conceptually unfamiliar chemical structures (protein enzyme) were displayed, students perceived the tasks as complex, demanding a new mode of learning. They spontaneously moved around to explore and appreciate the 3D visualisation of iVR. Walking to different positions to observe the virtual objects from multiple angles, students engaged in more collaborative, exploratory conceptual discussions. As the perceived complexity of learning tasks or virtual objects triggers different collaborative interactions amongst students, careful considerations need to be placed on the design of iVR tasks to encourage productive collaborative learning.

Enabling students to learn about science is essential for science education. Students are expected to not only gain scientific knowledge but also need to develop a deep understanding of science. One approach to equipping students with a sense of science is to present science as a living collective human enterprise. As essential educational resources, science textbooks are powerful supportive tools for helping students be aware of the tentative, historical, and humanistic features of science. This study aims to develop and validate a comprehensive analytical framework for examining how a science textbook enables students to understand science and scientists through scientists' portrayals. The final analytical framework comprises five themes and 13 dimensions concerning scientists and their work, including the textbook's representation method (i.e., format and role of representation), scientists' background (i.e., personal and social background), scientists' work-related features (i.e., motivation for doing research, research methods, and way of working), scientists' achievements (i.e., type, evaluation, and influence), and educational values of scientists and their work (i.e., scientific thinking, scientific attitudes, and social responsibility). The analysis results of an American high school science textbook indicate that the framework developed is feasible to cover all the desired scientist-related elements and evaluate the extent of scientists' portrayals presented in the textbooks. In addition, the results also revealed that this textbook is inadequate in providing students with a comprehensive understanding of science and scientists via its portrayals of scientists.

It is difficult for students to learn the concepts of chemical laboratory safety education from actual experiences because the traditional teaching model prohibits students from performing dangerous operations. Therefore, this study develops a novel mixed reality-based chemistry experiment learning system (MRCELS) to allow learners to conduct inquiry-based experimental operations in an environment integrating virtual and physical space by using a free and safe way so that chemical laboratory safety problems that usually occur in actual chemical laboratories that may hurt learners can be avoided. A total of 36 Grade 11 students from a girl's high school in Taipei City, Taiwan, were recruited to participate in the experiment. A total of 17 students were randomly assigned to the experimental group using the MRCELS to conduct chemical laboratory safety education, while the remaining 19 students were randomly assigned to the control group taught by a teacher in a physical-chemical laboratory. The research results show that the learning effectiveness of experimental group learners in chemical laboratory safety education is significantly superior to that of the control group. Besides, experimental and control groups significantly improved their attitudes toward laboratory safety after the instruction experiment, but no significant differences existed between them. Both groups of learners showed high satisfaction with the learning model they used, but no significant differences existed between them. Encouragingly, according to the interview results, learners preferred to adopt the MRCELS to support learning. They stated that the immersion experience in operating the chemical experiments through the MRCELS could enhance their awareness of hazardous operations and the development of laboratory safety concepts. The developed MRCELS contributes an effective and innovative learning model to chemical laboratory safety education.

This paper explores how the culture within a Danish university study programme affects students' aspirations of becoming a high school chemistry teacher. We draw on ethnographic fieldwork and qualitative interviews to describe and analyse the culture of the programme. In the analysis we foreground the case of two students to understand their identity negotiations and changes in their teacher aspirations over time. By combining a 'domains-of-power framework' with the concept of 'science identity', we show how everyday practices formed a culture of power that positioned research in the centre and teaching as a less attractive career path. By unfolding the subtle mechanisms that together form a culture of power, which works both to include and exclude, we show the ways in which the two student's aspirations for becoming high school chemistry teachers somewhat diminished over time. The study concludes that negotiating a science identity at a research-intensive university programme, makes it almost impossible to develop and keep an aspiration for becoming a high school teacher. To address the current and future shortage of science teachers across Europe, our findings underline the need for a more inclusive culture at the university to support science students' diverse aspirations.

This research probed the perceptions of secondary school science teachers concerning the objective and utility of assessment, exploring the influences of gender, teaching experience, and specific science subject components. A total of 100 secondary school teachers from Selangor participated in the study, completing the Teacher's Conception of Assessment (TCoA) online questionnaire. This instrument comprised 27 statements categorized into four key aspects: Improvement, Irrelevance, School Accountability, and Student Accountability. Interestingly, the data revealed that the highest mean score was attributed to the irrelevance of assessments (M=4.44; SD=0.86), followed by assessment for improvement (M=4.21; SD=0.95), student accountability (M=4.18; SD=1.32), and lastly, school accountability (M=4.15; SD=1.44). A closer examination of the data pointed towards significant gender-based differences in teachers' perceptions of institutional accountability and educational enhancement through assessments, with female and male teachers scoring higher in these respective areas. However, the length of teaching experience did not appear to significantly affect the teachers' perceptions across any of the assessed parameters. There were noteworthy differences in teachers' perceptions of student accountability in assessments when evaluated based on the subject taught, with Biology teachers reporting higher mean scores as compared to Chemistry and Physics teachers. Additionally, teachers' perceptions regarding the improvement role of assessments and their irrelevance differed significantly across subjects, with general science teachers attaining higher mean scores than Chemistry, Biology, and Physics teachers. The findings of this study shed light on teachers' understanding of assessment, particularly in the field of Science, and serve as a valuable resource for all educational stakeholders.
