Background: Early adversity increases the risk for mental and physical disorders as well as premature death. Epigenetic processes, and altered epigenetic aging in particular, might mediate these effects. While the literature that examined links between early adversity and epigenetic aging is growing, results have been heterogeneous.Objective: In the current work, we explored the link between early adversity and epigenetic aging in a sample of formerly out-of-home placed young adults.Method: A total of N = 117 young adults (32% women, age mean = 26.3 years, SD = 3.6 years) with previous youth residential care placements completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) and the Life Events Checklist (LEC-R) and provided blood samples for the analysis of DNA methylation using the Illumina Infinium MethylationEPIC BeadChip Microarray. Epigenetic age was estimated using Hovarths and Hannums epigenetic clocks. Furthermore, Hovarths and Hannums epigenetic age residuals were calculated as a proxy of epigenetic aging by regressing epigenetic age on chronological age. The statistical analysis plan was preregistered (https://osf.io/b9ev8).Results: Childhood trauma (CTQ) was negatively associated with Hannums epigenetic age residuals, β = -.23, p = .004 when controlling for sex, BMI, smoking status and proportional white blood cell type estimates. This association was driven by experiences of physical neglect, β = -.25, p = .001. Lifetime trauma exposure (LEC-R) was not a significant predictor of epigenetic age residuals.Conclusion: Childhood trauma, and physical neglect in particular, was associated with decelerated epigenetic aging in our sample. More studies focusing on formerly institutionalized at-risk populations are needed to better understand which factors affect stress-related adaptations following traumatic experiences.

Schizophrenia is a brain dysconnectivity disorder. However, it is not well understood whether the experience of childhood trauma (CT) affects dysconnectivity in individuals with schizophrenia (SZ). Using a network-based approach, we examined whether self-reported CT would explain additional variance compared to whole-brain topology and structural connectivity changes in SZ versus healthy controls (HC). CT was assessed in 51 SZ (mean age ± standard deviation 44 ± 11 years) and 140 HC (34.0 ± 12 years). Structural brain networks were constructed from T1-weighted MR and diffusion-MRI scans using non-tensor based tractography. Group differences in whole-brain topology and permutation-based statistics were examined and corrected for age and sex. SZ showed reductions in efficiency, strength, clustering and density (p < 0.01) as well as increases in path length (F (range) = 4.71–18.1, p < 0.03) when compared to HC. We also observed hypoconnectivity in a subnetwork of frontotemporal, frontoparietal and occipital regions in SZ relative to HC (T > 4.0, p < 0.001). However, we did not find that high CT levels were related to structural network differences or structural connectivity changes in SZ. CT did not impact on topology or subnetwork connectivity changes in SZ. High CT levels were also not associated with any differences in network organisation irrespective of diagnosis. However, our findings confirm that SZ showed both network-level reductions and increases in a subnetwork. These findings suggest that the patterns of neuroanatomical dysconnectivity in established schizophrenia may not be influenced by CT. Future studies are needed to investigate the association between CT and structural dysconnectivity in schizophrenia. Individuals with schizophrenia showed reductions in efficiency, strength, clustering and density as well as increases in path length when compared to healthy controls. Summary: This study sought to examine the effects of childhood adversity on the longitudinal associations between perinatal sleep quality and depressive symptoms, and to determine the prospective associations between these constructs over time. A cross‐lagged autoregressive model was used to examine the longitudinal association between sleep quality and depressive symptoms at four points during the perinatal period: 18 and 32 weeks of pregnancy, and 6 and 12 weeks postpartum. Longitudinal mediation models were used to examine whether sleep quality or depressive symptoms mediated the effects of childhood adversity on these symptoms. Most participants (86%) reported poor sleep quality during pregnancy. Significant cross‐lagged effects of depressive symptoms on subsequent sleep quality were observed during pregnancy and postpartum. Depressive symptoms significantly mediated the effects of childhood trauma on sleep quality during pregnancy, but sleep quality did not significantly mediate the effects of childhood trauma on depressive symptoms. While sleep quality and depressive symptoms tend to co‐occur, our analyses indicate that perinatal depressive symptoms work as the primary driver of sleep quality over time. Childhood adversity may have long‐reaching effects in women as it was associated with more depressive symptoms in the perinatal period, which in turn appeared to undermine sleep quality. This study aimed to investigate the associations of childhood trauma and its facets with depressive symptoms in depressed adolescents during the post COVID-19 epidemic, and explore the potential mediating role of social peer rejection in these associations. A total of 413 adolescents with depressive disorders completed the Chinese version of the Child Trauma Questionnaire Short Form, the Social Peer Rejection, and the Children's Depression Inventory. Childhood trauma (β = 0.42, p < 0.01) and social peer rejection (β = 0.18, p < 0.01) were positively related to depressive symptoms, after adjustment for demographic factors. Furthermore, social peer rejection partly mediated the relationship between childhood trauma and depressive symptoms, and the mediation effect ratio was 17.0% (p < 0.001). This study found that childhood trauma and social peer rejection are both risk factors for depressive symptoms, and social peer rejection played a mediating role in the relationship between childhood trauma and depressive symptoms. Adolescents exposed to childhood trauma are at an elevated risk for social anxiety. However, the physiological mechanisms linking childhood trauma and adolescents' social anxiety remain poorly understood. This study examined whether cardiovascular reactivity to acute social stress was a mechanism underlying this association. Participants were Chinese adolescents (N = 172; Mage = 12.95). They first reported their childhood trauma and social anxiety using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire and the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale. They then participated in a social stress task, during which their cardiovascular data [heart rate (HR) and systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP, DBP)] were monitored. The results showed that high levels of childhood trauma were associated with blunted HR, SBP, and DBP reactivity, which in turn were associated with high levels of social anxiety. Mediation analysis indicated that childhood trauma was indirectly associated with social anxiety via blunted cardiovascular reactivity. The findings suggest that blunted cardiovascular reactivity may serve as a physiological pathway linking childhood trauma and adolescents' social anxiety. Background: Childhood maltreatment contributes to a large mental health burden worldwide. Different measures of childhood maltreatment are not equivalent and may capture meaningful differences. In particular, prospective and retrospective measures of maltreatment identify different groups of individuals and are differentially associated with psychopathology. However, the reasons behind these discrepancies have not yet been comprehensively mapped. Methods: In this review, we draw on multi‐disciplinary research and present an integrated framework to explain maltreatment measurement disagreement. Results: We identified three interrelated domains. First, methodological issues related to measurement and data collection methods. Second, the role of memory in influencing retrospective reports of maltreatment. Finally, the motivations individuals may have to disclose, withhold, or fabricate information about maltreatment. Conclusions: A greater understanding of maltreatment measurement disagreement may point to new ways to conceptualise and assess maltreatment. Background: Childhood trauma adversely impacts adolescents, and consequently, they develop behavioural problems. Understanding the distribution of childhood traumas and their association with behavioural problems among adolescents is paramount for the preventive efforts. Aim/Objective: The present research aimed to investigate this association among adolescents. Methods: This association was investigated among adolescents (N = 200) between 12 and 18 years. Childhood Trauma Questionnaire and Strength and Difficulty Questionnaire was used to assess the distribution of trauma and internalizing and externalizing behavioural problems among adolescents through purposive and convenience sampling technique. Results: The findings across trauma distribution indicated higher distribution of childhood abuse and neglect across males as compared to females. Males further significantly scored higher on sexual abuse and emotional neglect. Apparently, a large number of adolescents experienced all five sub types of childhood traumas (sexual abuse, emotional abuse, physical abuse, emotional and physical neglect). Additionally, across the severity continuum of childhood traumas, male scored higher on the severe to extreme continuum for all subtypes except physical abuse, where females scored higher. Lastly, logistic regression analysis indicated higher peer problems among those adolescents who have experienced all types of childhood traumas. Childhood trauma exposure is prevalent among incarcerated youth and associated with antisocial traits and behavior. It has been proposed as a risk factor for the development of sadistic traits, which has been shown to predict future violence in youth. Using regression analyses, we examined the association between self-report and expert-rated measures of childhood trauma, sadistic traits (i.e., verbal, physical, vicarious sadism), and violence (i.e., homicide and non-homicide violent acts) in 54 incarcerated juveniles. Expert-rated (but not self-report) severity of physical abuse was associated with physical and vicarious sadistic traits. Other trauma types (e.g., emotional or sexual abuse) were not significantly associated with sadistic traits. Physical abuse coupled with vicarious sadistic traits conferred the highest risk of non-homicide violence. The findings support and clarify links between childhood trauma, sadistic traits, and violent behavior in youth, and are distinct from those found in other antisocial profiles. Background: Childhood trauma (CT) is a major risk factor for psychiatric disorders. Emotional and cognitive functions are often affected in many psychiatric conditions, and these functions are mediated by the limbic system. However, previous research has primarily focused on patient populations. Therefore, we aim to examine the impact of CT on the limbic brain structure in healthy individuals. Methods: We enrolled 48 individuals in health, evenly split into two groups: 24 healthy participants with CT (HP-CT) and 24 healthy participants without CT (HP-nCT). They underwent scale assessments and MRI data acquisition. Comparisons between the two groups were performed after subcortical subregion volume segmentation using FreeSufer. Lastly, we examined correlations between volume changes and scale scores. Results: We found that HP-CT group had smaller volumes in several subregions of the hippocampus, amygdala, and cortical limbic structures, including the subiculum (Sub) head and body, cornu ammonis (CA)1 head, molecular layer (ML) head, granule cell layer of the dentate gyrus (GC-ML-DG) body, CA4 body, fimbria, hippocampus-amygdala transition area (HATA), whole hippocampus head and body, whole hippocampus, basal nucleus (Ba), accessory basal nucleus (AB), cortico-amygdaloid transition area (CAT), paralaminar nucleus (PL) of the left hemisphere; and hippocampal tail, presubiculum (PreSub) body, and basal forebrain of the right hemisphere. Volume changes in the CA4 body and GC-ML-DG body were correlated with sexual abuse. Changes in the volume of the right basal forebrain were linked to emotional neglect. However, these findings were not significant after correction for multiple comparisons. Conclusion: CT impacts multiple structures of the limbic system, including the hippocampus, and amygdala. This also suggests that region-specific changes within the limbic system can serve as clinical biomarkers supporting cross-diagnostic psychiatric illnesses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Traits of borderline personality disorder are important for the determination of the prognosis of mental illnesses and in evaluating risks of negativity as well as impulsivity. But, there is a lack of information about the distribution characteristics of borderline personality disorder traits and symptoms within clinical groups. The goal of the current study was to predict borderline personality disorder based on childhood trauma, using experiential avoidance as a mediator. Methods: All male patients hospitalized in local psychiatric health centers with a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder comprised the statistical population of the current study. The number of 60 patients were selected by the purposeful sampling method. The questionnaire included the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), the Experiential Avoidance Questionnaire (AAQ-II), and the Borderline Personality Disorder Symptoms (BSL-23). Results and discussion: The results demonstrated that there is a considerable and positive relationship between childhood trauma and experiential avoidance (r = 0.711, p< 0.01). In the mediating model, childhood trauma had significant direct predictive effects on borderline personality disorder (β = 0.546, p< 0.01). Internationally, there is growing recognition of the scale and consequences of intimate partner homicides (IPH). A significant, though often neglected consequence is how many children are impacted by these tragic events. In such challenging circumstances, children need stability, continuity and trusted people they can rely on for support. This paper aims to understand how best to provide school-based support for children following parental IPH by investigating the experiences of affected children, their caregivers and professionals with experience of working with these children. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken with 35 participants in Australia, the UK and Ireland (11 with lived experience, 12 caregivers and 12 professionals). We developed two key themes through the data analysis process: (1) School as a supportive place and (2) Limited access to a trusted, supportive adult at school. We found that schools can potentially be supportive, safe, stable, and consistent places for affected children, and teachers and counsellors can help provide trusted, supportive relationships for them; however, there needs to be effective resourcing within an overall policy structure. Schools are in a strategic position to identify the effects of trauma in the children’s lives and can also provide a valuable link between children and relevant specialist services. There are limitations, however, regarding both the accessibility and availability of suitable skilled and experienced practitioners who can support the children, their caregivers, and school staff. Childhood trauma is closely tied to adult depression, but the neurobiological mechanisms remain unclear. Previous studies suggested associations between depression and large-scale brain networks such as the Ventral Attention Network (VAN) and Somatosensory Motor Network (SMN). This study hypothesized that functional connectivity (FC) within and between these networks mediates the link between childhood trauma and adult depression. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) assessed developmental experiences, and the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD-17) gauged depressive symptoms. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) analyzed FC within and between the VAN and SMN. Depression group exhibited significantly higher HAMD and CTQ scores, as well as elevated FC within the VAN and between the VAN and SMN (P < 0.05). Positive correlations were found between HAMD total score and FC within the VAN (P < 0.05, r = 0.35) and between the VAN and SMN (P < 0.05, r = 0.34), as well as with CTQ total score (P < 0.05, r = 0.27). Positive correlations were also observed between CTQ total score and FC within the VAN (P < 0.05, r = 0.31) and between the VAN and SMN (P < 0.05, r = 0.29). In the mediation model, FC within and between the VAN and SMN significantly mediated childhood trauma and depression. The cross-sectional design limits causal inference. The sample size for different trauma types is relatively small, urging caution in generalizing findings. The study underscores the association between depression severity, VAN dysfunction, abnormal VAN-SMN FC, and childhood trauma. Introduction Methods Results Discussion and Conclusions Childhood traumatic experiences (CTE) have been identified as a robust risk factor for a range of substance use behaviours. However, little is known about their association with adolescent vaping. We explored prospective associations between CTEs and vaping among a sample of Australian adolescents.The sample comprised 2234 adolescents (baseline Mage = 12.7 years, SD = 0.5; 49.9% female) enrolled in the Health4Life cluster randomised controlled trial. Using mixed effects logistic regression analyses, data from the baseline and 36‐month assessment waves were used to examine whether CTEs (by ~ age 12) were associated with current or lifetime vaping and future intentions to vape (~ age 15).Adjusting for socio‐demographic variables, CTE exposure at baseline was associated with higher odds of ever having vaped (odds ratio 1.64, 95% confidence interval 1.34, 2.02), and of being a current regular vape user (odds ratio 1.63, 95% confidence interval 1.11, 2.39). Experiencing CTEs was also associated with higher odds of intending to vape in the future (odds ratio 1.44, 95% confidence interval 1.11, 1.86).This study is the first to identify CTEs as a risk factor for vaping, and intentions to vape in the future, among Australian adolescents. These findings align with global research and highlight another common risk factor across various forms of substance use. Negative birth experiences are common. It is yet unclear which women may be most at risk already before pregnancy. Childhood trauma and non-autonoumous/unresolved attachment state of mind may affect how women experience giving birth. This study used longitudinal data to test childhood trauma and attachment state of mind as predictors of birth experience in at-risk sample of primipara women (N = 193). The Adverse Childhood Experiences questionnaire and the Adult Attachment interview were administered during pregnancy, and women reported about their birth experience three months postpartum. Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling was applied to answer the research questions. Childhood physical neglect and parental substance abuse were predictive of a more negative birth experience, while attachment state of mind was not associated with how women experienced giving birth. Cross-validation suggests that these findings may be considered externally valid. Further research using validated measures on birth experience are needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate whether a potential moral cognitive impairment (failure in understanding moral rules) exists in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) and to explore the effect of childhood trauma (CT) on moral cognition in a group of patients with SCZ. Methods: A total of 99 patients with SCZ and 102 healthy controls (HCs) were included in this study. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ) was administered to assess childhood trauma experiences in both groups, while the Moral Identity Measure (MIM) and the Moral Foundations Questionnaire (MFQ) were applied for a comparative evaluation of moral cognition across the two groups. The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was administered to assess the psychopathology. Results: Patients with schizophrenia had significantly greater CTQ scores than HCs (42.77 ± 13.50 vs. 29.11 ± 4.25, t =9.697, p <0.001). The prevalence of childhood trauma (χ 2 = 58.452, p <0.001) and history of aggressive behaviors (χ 2 = 23.565, p =0.001) among patients with SCZ were greater than that among HCs. In addition, the scores of moral cognition (MIM: 61.82 ± 15.12 vs. 70.88 ± 8.87, p =0.001; MFQ: 87.24 ± 22.30 vs. 112.62 ± 23.42, p =0.045) in the SCZ group was lower than that in the HC group after controlling for the influence of CT covariates. The MFQ score was negatively correlated with the CTQ score, the emotional abuse (EA) score, the physical abuse (PA) score and the physical neglect (PN) score in SCZ patients. Among HCs, the MFQ score was positively correlated with the CTQ score, as well as with the dimensions of physical abuse (PA) and emotional Neglect (EN). Multiple linear regression analyses revealed that impaired moral cognition performance was significantly predicted by the CTQ score (beta =-0.235, p =0.034, 95% CI -0.743 to -0.031) in patients with SCZ but was significantly predicted by years of education (beta =-0.392, p <0.001, 95% CI -4.783 to -1.876), alcohol use (beta =0.210, p =0.023, 95% CI 2.191 to 29.399) and the CTQ score (beta =0.184, p =0.046, 95% CI 0.019 to 1.928) in HCs. CTQ moderated the effect of SCZ on MFQ (B = 0.516); Simple tests revealed that the group effect on the MFQ was B =12.306 at the lower level(-1SD) and B = 54.089 at the higher level(+1SD) of the CTQ scores. AbstractResearch on intergenerational trauma (IGT) indicates a link between parent and offspring PTSD symptoms. Studies suggest that parents’ PTSD symptoms could contribute to harsh parenting practices, such as childhood maltreatment, in turn increasing risk for PTSD symptoms in their offspring. However, the potential mediating role of cumulative and subtypes of offspring childhood trauma in intergenerational PTSD symptom transmission, along with the impact of parental sex, remain understudied. This cross-sectional study examined whether the link between parent and offspring PTSD symptoms among survivors of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda to their offspring was mediated by cumulative and subtypes of offspring childhood trauma, and how these relationships vary by parental sex. Adult children of genocide survivors, all born after the genocide (N = 166; Mage=23.03, SD = 1.94; 47.6% female), completed an online survey. We performed a series of models investigating childhood trauma as a mediator of maternal and paternal IGT transmission. We found significant indirect effects of maternal PTSD symptoms on offspring secondary PTSD symptoms via sexual abuse and physical neglect, and of paternal PTSD symptoms on offspring secondary PTSD symptoms via cumulative childhood trauma, sexual abuse, and physical abuse. The findings demonstrate variation in IGT via childhood trauma subtypes and parental sex. Future research, including longitudinal and multi-informant studies, should examine these sources of variation further to provide insight into how interventions could be tailored to prevent and mitigate the intergenerational transmission of PTSD symptoms. High levels of parenting stress, defined as a caregiver or parent feeling stress or aggravation from parenting, has been previously shown to be associated with an increased likelihood of neglect, child maltreatment, and household dysfunction: adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Despite the potential mitigation of positive childhood experiences (PCEs) on ACEs, prior studies on the increased likelihood of a child experiencing ACEs due to parenting stress have left a critical question unanswered: whether high parenting stress may decrease a child's likelihood of experiencing PCEs. We analyzed the 2019–2020 National Survey of Children's Health to examine whether higher levels of parenting stress are associated with the lower likelihood of experiencing PCEs among children. Children with caregivers experiencing high parenting stress had a lower odds of experiencing many types of PCEs, including after school activities (aOR 0.48; 95% CI 0.38–0.57), community volunteer (aOR 0.63; 95% CI 0.52–0.77), and guiding mentor (aOR 0.65; 95% CI 0.50–0.85). Lowering parenting stress through economic supports and parenting programs/interventions could increase the likelihood that a child experiences PCEs. Purpose: To explore the differences in mental health symptom profiles, trauma profiles, childhood trauma and comorbidities in patients with PTSD and those without PTSD. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 110 adult patients with trauma backgrounds attending a mental health outpatient clinic in Southern Oslo, Norway. In addition to self- report questionnaires, several standardized validated diagnostic tools were used to assess mental disorders. Multiple linear regression models were used to assess the association between trauma history, the mental health symptom profile of the patients, and PTSD diagnosis. Bivariate logistic regression was used to examine if childhood trauma/adversities were associated with PTSD. Results: Patients diagnosed with PTSD had significantly higher rates of comorbid major depressive disorder, panic disorder, agoraphobia disorder, and social phobia compared to those without PTSD. We also found a positive association between PTSD diagnosis and all the different mental health symptoms domains of the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised instrument. When adjusted for age, gender, education, smoking habits, immigration, relationship, and employment status, these associations persisted with varying effects. We did not find any association between PTSD and childhood trauma/adversities, however, sexual abuse trended towards an association. Conclusion: Adult trauma patients with PTSD may have more comorbid disorders and mental health symptoms. Childhood trauma may be less critical for the PTSD diagnosis in this group. The enormous societal and individual consequences of mental health disorders and detrimental health behaviours in the general population are of paramount concern. Many argue that 'prevention is the best cure', pushing for the implementation of early (preventive) interventions. Key questions regarding early interventions include which population segment to target for screenings and what information these screenings should focus on. In line with previous efforts, this study aimed to identify which population segment holds the majority (≥ 80 %) of different economically costly outcomes in society, and whether child abuse before the age of 16 years predicts being part of that population segment. Epidemiological cohort study. This study used the Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study-2, a Dutch epidemiological cohort study including 6646 adults aged 18–64 years at baseline, spanning four timepoints from 2007 to 2018. Cumulative distributions were computed to identify high-cost population segments of economically costly outcomes in adulthood (i.e., mental and physical health [behaviours], unemployment and work absenteeism). Child abuse was examined as a potential predictor of these segments and the risk of multiple high-cost population segment membership was investigated by conducting Poisson regressions. A 20 % population segment carried between 42 % and 100 % of economically costly outcomes. Being exposed to more child abuse predicted being in a high-cost population segment, albeit with small effect sizes. Being exposed to more child abuse also predicted belonging to multiple high-cost population segments across different economically costly outcomes. The study findings have implications for policy makers. Emphasis should be placed on prevention aimed at identifying potential members of multiple high-cost population segments. Background: Traumatic experiences in an early phase of an individual's life stand out as a highly influential risk factor for poor developmental outcomes. Studies examining poor childhood experiences revealed childhood trauma linked to a negative impact on mental health. Therefore, the objective of this study is to comprehend and investigate the subjective childhood experiences of the affected children. Methods: A qualitative approach was adopted to explore the lived experiences with their consequences. The study employed a purposeful sampling technique to choose adolescents who had encountered abuse and were capable of articulating their experiences with clarity. In-depth interviews were carried out with 18 adolescents aged 13–18 years, all from childcare homes (mean = 16, SD = 1.46). The transcriptions of these interviews were analyzed using a thematic approach. Results: The analysis indicated that the children experienced physical abuse, sexual abuse, rape, abandonment, and neglected home environment. The children took responsibility for the abuse directed toward them and were also engaged in substance use. They further reported experiencing negative effects on their behavioral functions (anger, isolation), cognitive function (difficulty in concentration, low academic performances), emotional function (fear, helplessness), social function (withdrawal, mutism), and biological function (sleeplessness, lack of appetite) due to the adverse events in their life. Perceived needs, for instance, emotional, social, and educational support and positive relationship, as well as growth from traumatic experiences were stated by the children. Conclusion: The findings of the study could have practical implications for clinicians, aiding in the understanding of low emotional expression and unexplained behavior among individuals and assisting in addressing the underlying vulnerability to facilitate their overcoming of these challenges. Additionally, it is suggested that a comprehensive strategy be used that addresses stigma, cultural values, and social norms in addition to legal issues to address the problem. The experience of childhood trauma is known to predict health-relevant outcomes across the lifespan. Previous reviews summarize existing knowledge of the implications of childhood trauma for health in young adults and adults more generally. The current theoretical review aims to integrate the existing literature on the relationship between childhood trauma and health-relevant outcomes specifically in college students, consolidating findings across specific health domains. Further, the following theoretical review highlights the need for more research in this area and discusses how college campuses may use the knowledge in this area of work to develop targeted interventions aimed at improving the health of college students who experienced trauma in childhood. Recent research has highlighted cerebellar involvement in cognition and several psychiatric conditions such as mood and anxiety disorders and schizophrenia. Attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorder have been linked to reduced cerebellar volume as well. Cerebellar alterations are frequently present after early adversity in humans and animals, but a systematic integration of results is lacking. To this end, a systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and EBSCO databases using the keywords "early adversity OR early life stress" AND "cerebellum OR cerebellar." A total of 45 publications met the inclusion criteria: 25 studies investigated human subjects and 20 reported results from animal models. Findings in healthy subjects show bilateral volume reduction and decreased functional connectivity within the cerebellum and between the cerebellum and frontal regions after adversity throughout life, especially when adversity was assessed with the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. In clinical populations, adults demonstrate increased cerebellar volume and functional connectivity after adversity, whereas pediatric patients show reduced cerebellar volume. Animal findings reveal cerebellar alterations without necessarily co‐occurring pathological behavior, highlighting alterations in stress hormone receptor levels, cell density, and neuroinflammation markers. Objective: Despite advancements in understanding panic disorder (PD), its etiology and pathogenesis remain elusive, particularly concerning the influence of psychosocial factors. This study aims to explore the mediating roles of neuroticism and anxiety sensitivity (AS) in the relationship between childhood trauma and PD severity. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis involving 84 individuals diagnosed with PD and 112 age- and gender-matched healthy controls (HC). Childhood trauma was assessed using the validated Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), while anxiety sensitivity levels were measured using the Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 (ASI-3). Neuroticism was evaluated using the Chinese Big Five Personality Inventory (CBF-PI-B). The severity of PD was determined using the Panic Disorder Severity Scale (PDSS). Statistical analysis encompassed both correlation and mediation techniques to thoroughly examine the relationships among childhood trauma, neuroticism, AS, and PD severity. Results: Individuals with PD exhibited significantly higher CTQ, ASI-3, and neuroticism scores compared to HC (all P<0.05). Within the PD group, strong positive correlations were found between CTQ scores, ASI-3 scores, neuroticism levels, and PDSS scores, with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.336 to 0.504 (all P<0.001). Additionally, our results indicated that neuroticism and AS acted as mediating factors in the relationship between childhood trauma and the severity of PD, with the 95% confidence interval for the indirect effects ranging from 0.028 to 0.116. Conclusion: This study highlights that PD patients exhibit significantly higher levels of childhood trauma, neuroticism, and AS compared to HC. Furthermore, childhood trauma indirectly influences PD severity through a chain mediation involving neuroticism and AS. Background: Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), collectively known as Premenstrual Disorders (PMDs), cause significant distress and functional impairment, and premenstrual exacerbation (PME) affects a large proportion of women with psychiatric diagnoses. Childhood trauma is one factor that may contribute to PMD/PME risk. This study examines the relationship between childhood trauma and PMDs, PME, and non-PMD psychiatric illness. Methods: This study is a secondary analysis of data from a prospective cohort. Participants completed self-assessments on childhood trauma using the Childhood Traumatic Event Scale (CTE-S) and on premenstrual symptoms using the Premenstrual Symptoms Screening Tool (PSST). Psychiatric diagnoses were assessed through structured clinical interviews. Participants were divided into four groups based on their PSST scores and psychiatric illness status: (1) Premenstrual Disorders (PMDs; moderate to severe PMS and PMDD), (2) PME, (3) psychiatric controls (PC; individuals with psychiatric illness but no significant premenstrual symptoms), and (4) healthy controls (HC; individuals with no psychiatric illness and no significant premenstrual symptoms). Statistical analyses, including ANOVA, Tukey's HSD test, Fisher's exact test, and logistic regression, were conducted to examine differences among the groups. Results: Data from 391 participants were analyzed. Participants with PME and PC reported a higher quantity and severity of childhood traumatic events compared to HCs (p <.05). There was a weak but significant correlation between childhood trauma and premenstrual symptom burden across all groups (R = .18, p <.001). Within-group analysis revealed moderate correlations between childhood trauma and premenstrual symptoms driven by the PMD group (R = .42, p = .01). Conclusions: The findings underscore the impact of childhood traumatic events on mental health and premenstrual symptoms and highlight the need for additional research to explore the underlying mechanisms linking childhood trauma to the continuum of premenstrual disorders, to improve the efficacy of trauma-focused interventions for affected individuals. Studies on bipolar disorder (BD) have suggested that exposure to childhood trauma (CT) and rapid cycling BD (RC-BD) are associated with earlier onset and overall worse prognosis. The association between CT exposure and RC-BD in patients from low/middle-income countries has not been sufficiently characterized. Therefore, we performed a case–control study of patients with RC-BD (n = 35), patients without RC-BD (n = 35), and healthy controls (HC) (n = 105) in a low/middle-income country, Colombia, to evaluate CT exposure and RC-BD for clinical associations. We reported a significant number of patients with RC-BD exposed to physical abuse and/or sexual abuse compared with patients without RC-BD during the course of illness. In addition, CT exposure and RC-BD were associated with an earlier age of onset and delayed diagnosis and treatment. Childhood trauma, including emotional neglect, emotional abuse, physical abuse, and sexual abuse, may contribute to borderline personality features like affective instability, identity problems, negative relationships, and self-harm. This study aims to explore how different types of childhood trauma affect these features in bipolar versus unipolar depressive disorders. We included 839 participants of the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA) with a lifetime diagnosis of major depressive disorder single episode (MDD S; N = 443), recurrent major depressive disorder (MDD-R; N = 331), or bipolar disorder (BD; N = 65). Multivariate regression was used to analyze data from the Childhood Trauma Interview and borderline features (from the self-report Personality Assessment Inventory). On average, participants were 48.6 years old (SD: 12.6), with 69.2 % being women, and 50.3 % of participants assessed positive for childhood trauma. Adjusted analyses revealed that participants diagnosed with BD, followed by MDD-R, exhibited the highest number of borderline personality features. Additionally, within the entire group, a strong association was found between childhood trauma, especially emotional neglect, and the presence of borderline personality features. Given the high prevalence of childhood trauma and borderline personality features, screening for these factors in individuals with mood disorders is crucial. Identifying these elements can inform and enhance the management of the often fluctuating and complex nature of these comorbid conditions, leading to more effective and tailored treatment strategies. • Highest number of BPF was observed in BD followed by MD-recurrend and finally MD-single episode. • This order (BD > MD-recurrent > MD-single episode) was observed for all four main domains of BPD. • Within each diagnostic category, participants with a history of CT consistently showed higher average scores for BPF. • Emotional neglect was the most strongly associated factor, with the total number of BPF and its four main subscale scores. Objective: Aesthetic surgeries are increasingly common procedures today, with rhinoplasty being the most frequently performed. The desire for improved appearance is closely linked to an individual's psychological health. It is known that patients seeking rhinoplasty tend to be more anxious and have experienced more negative childhood experiences. However, the impact of personality traits and adverse childhood experiences on the decision to undergo rhinoplasty remains unclear. Methods: The study included 256 individuals, consisting of 106 who had undergone rhinoplasty, 46 considering rhinoplasty, and 104 not considering rhinoplasty. All participants completed the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire Revised Short Form and the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. Results: Neuroticism increased the likelihood of undergoing rhinoplasty by 16.3%, and this rate rose to 29.3% if a family member had undergone rhinoplasty. Psychoticism increased the likelihood by 15.4%, and the rate increased to 19.1% if no family member had undergone rhinoplasty. Extraversion increased the likelihood by 24.4%, and this rose to 30.9% if a family member had undergone rhinoplasty. Emotional abuse, mediated by neuroticism, increased the likelihood of undergoing rhinoplasty by 5.4%, and this increased to 17.7% if a family member had undergone rhinoplasty. Physical neglect increased the likelihood by 17.9%, and this rate rose to 22% if no family member had undergone rhinoplasty. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that both personality traits and childhood traumas influence the decision to undergo rhinoplasty. These results will serve as an important guide for future research. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate whether a potential moral cognitive impairment (failure in understanding moral rules) exists in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) and to explore the effect of childhood trauma (CT) on moral cognition in a group of patients with SCZ. Methods: A total of 99 patients with SCZ and 102 healthy controls (HCs) were included in this study. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ) was administered to assess childhood trauma experiences in both groups, while the Moral Identity Measure (MIM) and the Moral Foundations Questionnaire (MFQ) were applied for a comparative evaluation of moral cognition across the two groups. The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was administered to assess the psychopathology. Results: Patients with schizophrenia had significantly greater CTQ scores than HCs (42.77 ± 13.50 vs. 29.11 ± 4.25, t=9.697, p<0.001). The prevalence of childhood trauma (χ2 = 58.452, p<0.001) and history of aggressive behaviors (χ2 = 23.565, p=0.001) among patients with SCZ were greater than that among HCs. In addition, the scores of moral cognition (MIM: 61.82 ± 15.12 vs. 70.88 ± 8.87, p=0.001; MFQ: 87.24 ± 22.30 vs. 112.62 ± 23.42, p=0.045) in the SCZ group was lower than that in the HC group after controlling for the influence of CT covariates. The MFQ score was negatively correlated with the CTQ score, the emotional abuse (EA) score, the physical abuse (PA) score and the physical neglect (PN) score in SCZ patients. Among HCs, the MFQ score was positively correlated with the CTQ score, as well as with the dimensions of physical abuse (PA) and emotional Neglect (EN). Multiple linear regression analyses revealed that impaired moral cognition performance was significantly predicted by the CTQ score (beta=-0.235, p=0.034, 95% CI -0.743 to -0.031) in patients with SCZ but was significantly predicted by years of education (beta=-0.392, p<0.001, 95% CI -4.783 to -1.876), alcohol use (beta=0.210, p=0.023, 95% CI 2.191 to 29.399) and the CTQ score (beta=0.184, p=0.046, 95% CI 0.019 to 1.928) in HCs. CTQ moderated the effect of SCZ on MFQ (B = 0.516); Simple tests revealed that the group effect on the MFQ was B=12.306 at the lower level(-1SD) and B = 54.089 at the higher level(+1SD) of the CTQ scores. Background: Mental health problems among adolescents are a common concern globally. However, its relationship with childhood trauma is not clearly understood from the existing studies. Therefore, this study aims to explore the relationships among childhood trauma, mental health, self-control, and internet addiction in Chinese vocational high school students. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among vocational high school students in China from October 2020 to December 2020. Standardized questionnaires were used to collect basic information regarding childhood trauma, self-control, psychological state, and social demographics. A structural equation model was used to study the relationships among internet addiction, self-control, childhood trauma, and mental health. Results: A total of 3368 individuals participated in the study. The results revealed the mediating effects of poor self-control and internet addiction on the association between childhood trauma and mental health. Conclusions: Internet addiction and low self-control play mediating roles in childhood trauma and mental health. Clarifying these relationships will help formulate better-targeted interventions to improve the mental health of Chinese vocational high school students and aid in interventions to treat and prevent mental health problems. Background: Due to a concerning rise in reported cases of childhood abuse in India, this study was initiated with the aim of uncovering the social determinants contributing to childhood trauma. Moreover, the second objective of the study was to discuss substance use initiation and patterns among children with cumulative trauma. Method: As a result, an in-depth interview served as a primary source of viewpoints to examine the essential objective. The study was conducted on children with a history of abuse. Twenty-eight children in the age group of 13–18 years (Mage = 16) residing in child-care institutes in Assam were taken into consideration. Results: Content analysis indicated child care and education, parental divorce or remarriage, domestic violence, family mental illness, household substance misuse, parental health, parental crime, poverty, and sexual and physical violence as social determinants of health for childhood trauma. Children reported using alcohol, marijuana, tobacco, cough syrup, inhalants such as paint, and glue, chewables such as betel nut and Gutka (chewing tobacco), and pharmaceutical tablets. Initiation and pattern of substance use among early initiators were likely to be encouraged by detrimental peer influence, indicating substance abuse as normal behavior and the family's role in shaping children's pattern of substance use. Problematic patterns of substance use were identified, for instance, health consequences, neglect of responsibilities, and increased daily frequency. Conclusion: The results of this study may offer practical insights for healthcare professionals, enhancing their comprehension and addressing the social determinants of health indicating trauma and referring them to appropriate treatments. A holistic approach, which encompasses the collaboration of policymakers and healthcare providers, is vital for fostering health equity, thereby potentially preventing child abuse, childhood trauma and subsequent recidivism of substance use. Background: There is considerable evidence supporting the elevated risk of mental health problems in individuals with evening chronotype relative to those with morning or intermediate chronotypes. Recent data, however, suggest that this risk may be explained, at least partially, by poor sleep quality. Methods: This study aimed to further clarify the roles of chronotype and sleep quality in mental health outcomes (depression, anxiety, stress) in young individuals (18–40 years) living in the UK (n = 185) or Germany (n = 209). Results: Consistent with our recent observations in a comparable North Indian sample, we found that poor quality of sleep had significantly positive associations with adverse mental health outcomes both in the UK and Germany-based samples. Significant associations between evening chronotype and poor mental health were also evident, but these associations were fully mediated by poor quality of sleep in both samples. Conclusions: These observations suggest that efforts to identify sleep disruption in a timely manner and promotion of good sleep may prevent mental health problems, especially in individuals with evening chronotype and other known risks for mental disorders. Self‐reported lost memory of child sexual abuse (CSA) can be mistaken for "repressed memory." Based on our longitudinal studies of memory and disclosure in child maltreatment victims who are now adults, we discuss findings relevant to "repressed memory cases." We examined relations between self‐report of temporarily lost memory of CSA (subjective forgetting) and memory accuracy for maltreatment‐related experiences (objective memory). Across two studies involving separate samples, we find evidence for memory suppression rather than repression: (1) Most adults who claimed temporary lost memory of CSA reported memory suppression and clarified that they could have remembered the event if asked; (2) subjective forgetting was positively associated with accurate objective memory for maltreatment‐related experiences. Subjective forgetting was also related to increased adult trauma symptoms and related to childhood non‐disclosure of CSA. Moreover, trauma‐related psychopathology mediated the relation between non‐disclosure and subjective forgetting. Implications for psychological theory and repressed memory cases are discussed. Self‐reported forgetting of child sexual abuse (CSA) may be misattributed to repressed memory. Using evidence from two longitudinal studies with separate maltreatment samples, we identify memory suppression as a more viable explanation than repression for CSA memory that has been reportedly lost and then retrieved. Important relations between self‐reported lost memory of CSA, accuracy of abuse‐related memory, childhood non‐disclosure of CSA, and adult trauma symptoms emerged, with significant legal implications. Background: Black and Latino youth are disproportionately affected by trauma from community violence, but to date, few data support the benefit of evidence-based treatments for these youth or of including peer support to engage these youth in mental health services. Objective: From 2018 until 2020, a hospital and community-based violence intervention program in Philadelphia pilot tested the integration of home and community-based Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) with peer services and case management for youth impacted by community violence. This study describes the implementation of this intervention. Method: Data was gathered by querying the program's database. The Child Post Traumatic Stress Symptom Severity Scale (CPSS-SR-5) and the Short Mood and Feelings Questionnaire (SMFQ) were utilized to evaluate the participants' pre- and post-intervention assessment of PTSD and depression. The sample (N = 50) consisted of Black and Latino youth, mean age 14. Results: Twenty-nine (58%) completed TF-CBT, and 82% met peer and case management goals. Youth who completed therapy showed significant improvement in both PTSD and depression symptoms at post-test. Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first study describing the implementation of home and community-based TF-CBT with peer support and case management. The study's limitations and need for further research are discussed. Plain language summary: Black and Latino youth are disproportionally affected by violence across US cities. Mental health research is needed to evaluate how to engage these youth in mental health services and provide effective and culturally relevant trauma treatment. This research describes the experiences of 50 children and adolescents (ages 8–18) who participated in this pilot tested health services intervention using their electronic health records to access de-identified information and present youths' demographics, services received, and clinical outcomes. Specifically, we describe ways in which the intervention was culturally relevant to the participants' lived experiences. Services delivered consisted of the integration of Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) with peer services and case management for youth impacted by community violence. Services were provided by licensed social workers and certified peer specialists at a hospital and community-based (i.e., youth's home, school) violence intervention program (HVIP). Our results indicate that this intervention shows preliminary efficacy for decreasing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression symptoms for Black & Latino youth impacted by ongoing violence. Biological mechanisms underlying anxiety proneness (AP), the tendency to react fearfully to stressors due to the belief that experiencing anxiety has harmful consequences, remain unclear. Epigenetic mechanisms, such as microRNAs (small, non‐coding RNAs 19–20 nucleotides long), may be contributory. This study investigated AP‐associated differences in microRNA expression among South African adolescents with variable exposure to childhood trauma (CT). AP was assessed using a composite score reflecting trait anxiety and anxiety sensitivity, while CT exposure was assessed with the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. High‐quality total RNA (n = 88) extracted from whole blood underwent microRNA‐sequencing. Differential microRNA expression analysis was conducted with DESeq2 in R, messenger RNA target prediction analysis was performed using TargetScan and DIANA‐microT, and the DIANA mirPATH tool was used for KEGG pathway analysis. The majority of participants were female (75.86%) with an average age of 15 (±1.19) years. MicroRNA expression analysis identified upregulation of hsa‐miR‐28‐5p and downregulation of hsa‐miR‐502‐3p and hsa‐miR‐500a‐3p in high‐AP individuals, irrespective of CT. Four KEGG pathways, each with ≥10% of their constituent genes predicted to be targets of the differentially expressed microRNAs, were identified and were enriched for genes involved in calcineurin and glutamate signalling. This study explored the relationship between childhood trauma and sex addiction among a sample of adult men (N = 149). Thirty‐eight (25.5%) men screened positive for sex addiction, whereas 111 (74.5%) did not. Using descriptive discriminant analysis, we found that four subscales of early trauma predicted risk of sex addiction group membership to varying degrees, accounting for 22.3% of the variance explained. Sexual and emotional abuse accounted for the most variance explained in the group differences, whereas physical abuse and, to a lesser extent, general trauma also contributed to the group differences. This study aimed to explore the pathway from childhood trauma to nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) in adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD) and to examine the chain-mediating role of psychological resilience and depressive symptoms in this pathway. A total of 391 adolescents with MDD were recruited in the present study. The Chinese version of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire—Short Form (CTQ-SF), the Chinese version of the Symptoms Check List-90 (SCL-90), the Chinese version of the Conner-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), and the Ottawa Self-Injury Inventory Chinese Revised Edition (OSIC) were used to evaluate childhood trauma, depressive symptoms, psychological resilience and NSSI, respectively. Our results showed that 60.87% of adolescents with MDD had NSSI in the past month. Childhood trauma frequency was negatively correlated with psychological resilience but positively correlated with depressive symptoms and NSSI severity in adolescents with MDD. The stepwise logistic regression analysis identified that age, childhood trauma and depressive symptoms could independently predict the occurrence of NSSI, and the three-step hierarchical regression showed that childhood trauma, psychological resilience and depressive symptoms were all significantly associated with NSSI frequency in adolescents with MDD. Furthermore, the chain-mediation analysis revealed that psychological resilience and depression serially mediated the relationship between childhood trauma and NSSI in adolescents with MDD. In patients with psychosis, rates of tobacco smoking and childhood trauma are significantly higher compared to the general population. Childhood trauma has been proposed as a risk factor for tobacco smoking. However, little is known about the relationship between childhood trauma and smoking in psychosis. In a subsample of the Genetic Risk and Outcome of Psychosis study (760 patients with psychosis, 991 unaffected siblings, and 491 healthy controls), tobacco smoking was assessed using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview and childhood trauma was measured with the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. Logistic regression models were used to assess associations between trauma and smoking, while correcting for confounders. Positive associations were found between total trauma, abuse, and neglect, and an increased risk for smoking in patients, while correcting for age and gender (ORtrauma 1.77, 95% CI 1.30–2.42, p < 0.001; ORabuse 1.69, 95% CI 1.23–2.31, p = 0.001; ORneglect 1.48, 95% CI 1.08–2.02, p = 0.014). In controls, total trauma and abuse were positively associated with smoking, while correcting for age and gender (ORtrauma 2.40, 95% CI 1.49–3.88, p < 0.001; ORabuse 2.02, 96% CI 1.23–3.32, p = 0.006). All associations lost their significance after controlling for additional covariates and multiple testing. Findings suggest that the association between childhood trauma and tobacco smoking can be mainly explained by confounders (gender, cannabis use, and education) in patients with psychosis. The first purpose of this study was to determine the course of dissociation among patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and personality-disordered comparison subjects (OPD) over 24 years of prospective follow-up. The second purpose was to determine clinically meaningful predictors of dissociation among patients with BPD. The Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES) was administered to 290 patients with BPD and 72 personality-disordered comparison subjects at baseline, and then once every two years over 24 years of prospective follow-up. Baseline predictors were assessed with the Revised Childhood Experiences Questionnaire (CEQ-R), the SCID-I, and the Shipley Institute of Living Scale. Time-varying predictors were assessed at baseline and every subsequent two years by means of the Abuse History Interview (AHI). Patients with BPD had higher baseline dissociation scores than personality-disordered comparison subjects. Whilst dissociation decreased significantly over time for both patient groups, the BPD group showed a steeper decline. Severity of childhood sexual abuse, adult history of rape, adult history of partner violence, and IQ were multivariate predictors of dissociation among patients with BPD. Taken together, the present findings suggest that a combination of interpersonal trauma exposure and cognitive abilities may contribute to the severity of dissociation in adult patients with BPD. Adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) may experience emotional, social, and psychological difficulties, heightened due to the interpersonal nature of harm. Despite the demonstrated effectiveness of trauma-focused treatments in the West, a culturally specific understanding of the needs of and treatments for survivors in South Asia is still in its infancy. The study aimed to systematically review research findings on the mental health impacts of CSA on adult survivors and current treatment approaches and their efficacy and acceptability in South Asia. Seven databases (Scopus, Ovid, CINAHL, ProQuest, EThOS, Google Scholar, and Dogpile) and five peer-reviewed South Asian journals were searched from inception until March 30, 2023. Searches included participants who were adult survivors of CSA of South Asian origin residing in South Asia. Studies on their mental health, different treatments, and the efficacy and acceptability of these treatments were included. Quality assessment tools were used to appraise the quality of included studies. The results were synthesized narratively. A total of 3,362 records were retrieved, and 24 articles were included in the final review. Twenty studies reported mental health impacts of CSA on adult survivors, four studies reported current treatments offered, and two studies were on recovery. However, no study focused on the efficacy or acceptability of the treatments being delivered. Purpose: To compare the prevalence of emotional and physical intimate partner violence (IPV) across pregnancy and the first year postpartum in those with and without clinical depression and assess the association between maternal childhood trauma, current stressful life events and depression and IPV over the perinatal period. Methods: Data were obtained from 505 pregnant women from the Mercy Pregnancy and Emotional Wellbeing Study (MPEWS), a cohort study with data collected across pregnancy until 12 months postpartum. Maternal antenatal depression was measured using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID-IV) with repeat measurement of perinatal depressive symptoms using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Trauma was measured using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, and experiences of physical and emotional intimate partner violence using items in the Stressful Life Events Scale. Results: Women experiencing IPV across the perinatal period were significantly more likely to score over 13 on the EPDS (p <.001) at each timepoint in pregnancy and the postpartum and physical IPV was associated with clinical depression. Further, a history of childhood trauma and current additional stressful life events were significantly associated with reporting current IPV in the perinatal period. Conclusions: This study confirmed the risk factors of childhood trauma and current stressful life events for reporting experiences of IPV in the perinatal period. Furthermore, women experiencing IPV reported higher depressive symptoms, providing evidence supporting the value of assessing those women who screen higher on the EPDS for IPV. Childhood adversity is linked to psychological, behavioral, and physical health problems, including obesity and cardiometabolic disease. Epigenetic alterations are one pathway through which the effects of early life stress and adversity might persist into adulthood. Epigenetic mechanisms have also been proposed to explain why cardiometabolic health can vary greatly between individuals with similar Body Mass Index (BMIs). We evaluated two independent cross-sectional cohorts of adults without known medical illness, one of which explicitly recruited individuals with early life stress (ELS) and control participants (n = 195), and the other a general community sample (n = 477). In these cohorts, we examine associations between childhood adversity, epigenetic aging, and metabolic health. Childhood adversity was associated with increased GrimAge Acceleration (GAA) in both cohorts, both utilizing a dichotomous yes/no classification (both p < 0.01) as well as a continuous measure using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) (both p < 0.05). Further investigation demonstrated that CTQ subscales for physical and sexual abuse (both p < 0.05) were associated with increased GAA in both cohorts, whereas physical and emotional neglect were not. In both cohorts, higher CTQ was also associated with higher BMI and increased insulin resistance (both p < 0.05). Finally, we demonstrate a moderating effect of BMI on the relationship between GAA and insulin resistance where GAA correlated with insulin resistance specifically at higher BMIs. These results, which were largely replicated between two independent cohorts, suggest that interactions between epigenetics, obesity, and metabolic health may be important mechanisms through which childhood adversity contributes to long-term physical and metabolic health effects. Childhood trauma is a risk factor for self-harm/suicidal behavior, but research on the potential association linking sleep quality and anxiety symptoms to childhood trauma and self-harm attempt is limited. The aim of this study was to describe the mediating role of sleep quality and anxiety symptoms between childhood trauma and self-harm attempt, and to provide a scientific basis for the prevention of self-harm behaviors. This study ultimately included 11,063 study participants who participated in the baseline survey of this large prospective cohort study of the UK Biobank. We used structural equation modeling (SEM) to analyze the chain mediating role of sleep quality and anxiety symptoms in childhood trauma and self-harm attempt while controlling for covariates. A total of 19.58 % of study participants self-reported self-harm attempt. Sleep quality was negatively correlated with childhood trauma, anxiety symptoms, and self-harm attempt (p < 0.01). Childhood trauma, anxiety symptoms, and self-harm attempt were positively correlated (p < 0.01). In addition, after adjusting for confounders, anxiety symptoms were able to partially mediate the association between childhood trauma and self-harm attempt (effect value: 0.042, p < 0.01), and sleep quality and anxiety symptoms can chain mediate the association between childhood trauma and self-harm attempt (effect value:0.002, p < 0.01), with a total mediating effect of 65.67 % of the total effect. Subgroup analyses further showed that the mediating effects of sleep quality and anxiety symptoms on childhood trauma and self-harm attempt differed across age, gender, ethnicity, and smoking and drinking subgroups. This study found a complex relationship between childhood trauma, sleep quality, anxiety symptoms, and self-harm attempt, with sleep quality and anxiety symptoms mediating the relationship between childhood trauma and self-harm attempt. Multiple avenues of intervention, such as the provision of professional psychological interventions and timely monitoring, should be used to improve the sleep quality and mental health of individuals with traumatic childhood experiences and to prevent the occurrence of emotionally harmful behaviors such as self-harm/suicide. • Childhood trauma can negatively influence anxiety symptoms and self-harm attempt, and positively influence sleep quality. Anxiety symptoms can positively influence self-harm attempt. The high and increasing proportion of single-parent families is considered a risk factor associated with various childhood trauma experiences. Consequently, concerns have been raised regarding the potential long-term effects of the childhood single-parent family structure. In this study, we employed advanced magnetic resonance imaging technology, including morphometric similarity mapping, functional connectivity density, and network-based analysis, to investigate brain connectivity and behavioral differences among young adults who were raised in single-parent families. Our study also aimed to explore the relationship between these differences and childhood trauma experiences. The results showed that individuals who grew up in single-parent families exhibited higher levels of anxiety, depression, and harm-avoidant personality. The multimodal MRI analysis further showed differences in regional and network-based connectivity properties in the single-parent family group, including increased functional connectivity density in the left inferior parietal lobule, enhanced cortical structural connectivity between the left isthmus cingulate cortex and peri-calcarine cortex, and an increase in temporal functional connectivity. Moreover, elevated levels of anxiety and depression, along with heightened functional connectivity density in the left inferior parietal lobule and increased temporal functional connectivity, were found to be correlated with a greater number of childhood trauma experiences. Through analyzing multiple data patterns, our study provides objective neuropsychobiological evidence for the enduring impact of childhood single-parent family structure on psychiatric vulnerability in adulthood. Background: The evaluation of Childhood trauma (CT) rates among nursing students is important as the repercussions of childhood trauma on nursing students might affect not only the individual students but also the patients that he or she may care for. Aims and Objective: 1) To evaluate the prevalence of CT among nursing students 2) To determine the relationship between CT and psychological resilience among nursing students 3) To assess the contributing factors of CT among nursing students. Methods: The present descriptive cross-sectional study involved 1326 nursing students who had been selected using a non-probability method. Childhood trauma was measured with the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) and Resilience was weighed using Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). Descriptive statistics, Pearson chi-square tests, and independent samples t-tests were used to analyze the data. Results: Around two-thirds (65%) of the nursing students reported exposure to some type of childhood trauma. More than half (58.2%) students were exposed to more than one type of CT and 8.6% experienced all five forms of CT. Out of five types of traumas, majority of the students experienced emotional neglect. CT was shown to be inversely related to psychological resilience. CT subscales also exhibited a statistically significant negative link with psychological resilience. Conclusion: Childhood trauma is common among nursing students. For the development of trauma-informed interventions, the findings of this study have important ramifications for nursing educators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper aims to review the subtypes of childhood trauma and its effects on brain structures and function, especially the hippocampus and amygdala within the limbic system, in the context of clinical psychology. For this purpose, original articles published between 1996 and 2024 were systematically searched in major databases such as PubMed, PsycArticles, Web of Science, and Google Scholar using keywords such as early childhood trauma, psychological trauma, limbic system, hippocampus, amygdala, and neuroimaging. The articles were initially screened based on their titles, and those meeting the search criteria, including study population, investigated brain regions, and types of traumas, were further assessed for relevance. Ultimately, 136 articles were selected and discussed in this review. Trauma experiences in early life can have a significantly negative influence on a person's psychological health by causing neurodevelopmental impairments, especially in the limbic system. While it is understood that trauma influences how individuals think, behave, and feel, the results of neuroimaging studies reveal variations in the amygdala and hippocampus based on different trauma subtypes. These changes merit deeper investigation in future research to fully understand the reasons behind the diverse findings in existing literature.

ABSTRACTYoung adults who have experienced adverse childhood experiences (ACE) are at increased risk for developing symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD), yet many young adults with ACE exposures do not develop BPD symptoms. As emotion regulation strategies are implicated in BPD symptoms, this study aims to understand the moderating effects of two emotion regulation strategies, cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression, regarding the association between ACEs and BPD. Linear regression analyses examined both self-reported cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression as moderators in the relationship between ACEs and BPD symptoms in a community-based sample of young adults aged 18–25 years old (n = 172). Childhood adversity was examined at different levels of exposure, in terms of no exposure, exposure to a single ACE, and exposure to multiple ACEs. There was no significant moderation by expressive suppression; however, a significant moderation effect was observed between multiple exposures and cognitive reappraisal. The relationship between multiple exposures to ACEs and BPD symptoms was significant at low levels of reappraisal, with the severity of BPD symptoms significantly decreasing at average and higher levels of reappraisal. These results indicate that cognitive reappraisal may act as a protective strategy against experiencing BPD symptoms despite multiple ACE exposures.

Abstract Background Childhood trauma (CT) is a major risk factor for psychiatric disorders. Emotional and cognitive functions are often affected in many psychiatric conditions, and these functions are mediated by the limbic system. However, previous research has primarily focused on patient populations. Therefore, we aim to examine the impact of CT on the limbic brain structure in healthy individuals. Methods We enrolled 48 individuals in health, evenly split into two groups: 24 healthy participants with CT (HP-CT) and 24 healthy participants without CT (HP-nCT). They underwent scale assessments and MRI data acquisition. Comparisons between the two groups were performed after subcortical subregion volume segmentation using FreeSufer. Lastly, we examined correlations between volume changes and scale scores. Results We found that HP-CT group had smaller volumes in several subregions of the hippocampus, amygdala, and cortical limbic structures, including the subiculum (Sub) head and body, cornu ammonis (CA)1 head, molecular layer (ML) head, granule cell layer of the dentate gyrus (GC-ML-DG) body, CA4 body, fimbria, hippocampus-amygdala transition area (HATA), whole hippocampus head and body, whole hippocampus, basal nucleus (Ba), accessory basal nucleus (AB), cortico-amygdaloid transition area (CAT), paralaminar nucleus (PL) of the left hemisphere; and hippocampal tail, presubiculum (PreSub) body, and basal forebrain of the right hemisphere. Volume changes in the CA4 body and GC-ML-DG body were correlated with sexual abuse. Changes in the volume of the right basal forebrain were linked to emotional neglect. However, these findings were not significant after correction for multiple comparisons. Conclusion CT impacts multiple structures of the limbic system, including the hippocampus, and amygdala. This also suggests that region-specific changes within the limbic system can serve as clinical biomarkers supporting cross-diagnostic psychiatric illnesses.
