The hydrofoil plays a crucial role in tidal current energy (TCE) devices, such as horizontal-axis turbines (HATs), vertical-axis turbines (VATs), and oscillating hydrofoils. This study delves into the numerical investigation of passive chordwise and spanwise deformations and the hydrodynamic performance of a deformable hydrofoil. Three-dimensional (3D) coupled fluid–structure interaction (FSI) simulations were conducted using the ANSYS Workbench platform, integrating computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element analysis (FEA). The simulation involved a deformable hydrofoil undergoing pitching motion with varying elastic moduli. The study scrutinizes the impact of elastic modulus on hydrofoil deformation, pressure distribution, flow structure, and hydrodynamic performance. Coefficients of lift, drag, torque, as well as their hysteresis areas and intensities, were defined to assess the hydrodynamic performance. The analysis of the correlation between pressure distribution and deformation elucidates the FSI mechanism. Additionally, the study investigated the 3D effects based on the flow structure around the hydrofoil. Discrepancies in pressure distribution along the spanwise direction result from these 3D effects. Consequently, different chordwise deformations of cross-sections along the spanwise direction were observed, contributing to spanwise deformation. The pressure difference between upper and lower surfaces diminished with increasing deformation. Peak values and fluctuations of lift, drag, and torque decreased. Lack of flexibility limits the performance enhancement of man-made flapping wing Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs). Active chordwise deformation (bending) is introduced into the flapping wing model at low Reynolds number of Re = 200 in the present study. The lattice Boltzmann method with immersed boundary is adopted in the numerical simulation. The effects of the bending amplitude, bending frequency and phase lag between bending and flapping on the propulsive performance are analysed. The numerical results show that all the chordwise deformation parameters including the bending amplitude, bending frequency and phase lag have a great influence on the flow field, Leading-Edge Vortex (LEV), Trailing-Edge Vortex (TEV) and previous Leading-Edge Vortex (pLEV) of the deformable flapping wing, which leads to the variation of the propulsive performance. With decreasing bending amplitude and increasing bending frequency, both the thrust and energy dissipation coefficients increase. The highest thrust coefficient and highest energy dissipation coefficient occur at a phase lag of 180°. On the other hand, strong dependence of the propulsive efficiency on the vortex tangle is found. The highest propulsive efficiency is obtained for the present model at a dimensionless bending amplitude of 0.2, bending frequency of 0.7Hz, and phase lag of 0°. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we propose a new nonlinear dynamic model of a rotor–blade system with whirling motion, in which a rigid rotor and blades are modeled as a Jeffcott rotor and Euler–Bernoulli beams, respectively. The stiffening effects of the rotating blades are considered using a hybrid set of deformations, which consist of the stretch and chordwise deformations. After the nonlinear partial differential equations of motion are derived using Hamilton's principle, they are discretized using the Galerkin method. From the discretized equations, the nonlinear dynamic responses are computed using the generalized- α time integration method. Based on the dynamic responses and the frequency spectra, the proposed model is verified both for the case where the blade is considered to be a rigid body and for the case where there is no whirling motion of the rotor. In this study, the nonlinear dynamic responses of the rotor–blade system are analyzed in terms of the natural frequencies for whirling motion and the natural frequencies of the deformation of the rotating beam. In addition, the effects of the supporting stiffness, rotating speed and blade stiffness on the dynamic responses of the radial displacement and stretch/chordwise deformations are also analyzed. The DARPA/AFRL/NASA Smart Wing program, led by Northrop Grumman Corporation (NGC) under the DARPA Smart Materials and Structures initiative, addressed the development of smart technologies and demonstration of relevant concepts to improve the aerodynamic performance of military aircraft. In Phase 2, Test 2 of the program, the main objective was to demonstrate high-rate actuation of hingeless, spanwise, and chordwise deformable control surfaces using smart materials-based actuators on a 30% scale, full span wind tunnel model of a proposed NGC uninhabited combat air vehicle (UCAV). A minimum actuation rate of 25° flap deflection in 0.33 s, producing a slew rate of 75°/s, was desired. This slew rate is representative of many operational military aircrafts with hinged control surfaces. Numerous trade studies were performed on a variety of smart materials and flexible structure configurations before arriving at the final trailing edge structure design that consisted of a flexcore center and elastomeric outer skin actuated by high-power ultrasonic motors using an eccentric motion. The trailing edge control surface fitted onto the wind tunnel model comprised 10 eccentric-driven segments connected together by a continuous outer skin and a flexible hinge pin at the trailing edge tip. This pinned configuration allowed the segments partial freedom to rotate about each other, but constrained any lateral motion thus giving a smooth trailing edge shape for nonuniform spanwise deflections. To control the 10 segments of the trailing edge, a VME-based control system with high speed, simultaneously sampled A/D and D/A boards and a dedicated DSP board was developed. This paper describes the analysis and design of the flex structure, ultrasonic motor selection and performance, element and coupon tests to verify analysis, control system development, model integration, and results from the wind tunnel test.
