The terminology Community of Practice has long standardized data categories in the framework of ISO TC 37. ISO 12620:2009 specifies the data model and procedures for a Data Category Registry (DCR), which has been implemented by the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics as the ISOcat DCR. The DCR has been used by not only ISO TC 37, but also by the CLARIN research infrastructure. 3. Käytäntöyhteisönä naisten salibandyjoukkue
- Abstract
Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli tutkia aloittelijan oppimista tämän liittyessä uuteen yhteisöön. Teoreettisena viitekehyksenä käytin Jean Laven ja Etienne Wengerin Communities of practice -teoriaa, jonka mukaan oppimista tapahtuu, kun aloittelijasta vähitellen tulee käytäntöyhteisön täysivaltainen jäsen. Tutkimuskysymykset olivat: kuinka ja millaisista asioista joukkueessa puhutaan, kuinka tämän puheen keinoin rakennetaan ja pidetään yllä yhteisön omaa kulttuuria, ja millainen merkitys tällä on aloittelijan oppimiselle. Tutkimusaineistoni keräsin tarkkailemalla ja tallentamalla puhetta naisten salibandyjoukkueen harjoituksista ja peleistä syksyllä 2013. Lisäksi haastattelin kolmea pelaajaa, joista kaksi oli aloittelijoita ja yksi oli harrastanut salibandya jo vuosia. Aineiston analysoin diskurssianalyyttisellä otteella. Tutkimusaineiston perusteella salibandyn pelaajien ajatukset aloittelijan oppimisesta ja siihen liittyvistä tekijöistä vastasivat Laven ja Wengerin näkemyksiä. Oppimisen kannalta erityisen tärkeänä pidettiin sitä, että aloittelijalla on mahdollisuus tarkkailla yhteisön toimintaa ja vähitellen osallistua siihen yhä enemmän. Jotta tämä on mahdollista, aloittelijan tulee olla sitoutunut yhteisöön ja vastaavasti yhteisön tulee antaa tälle oikeutus osallistua yhteiseen toimintaan. Tulosten perusteella tutkimuksen kohteena olleessa yhteisössä aloittelijalle tulee antaa enemmän tilaa ja mahdollisuuksia osallistua joukkueen jäsenten välisiin keskusteluihin, jotta tällä olisi mahdollisimman hyvät edellytykset oppia. Tutkimuksen tulokset ovat sovellettavissa mihin tahansa käytäntöyhteisöön., The goal of the research was to examine how a beginner learns when he/she joins a new community. As theoretical context I used Jean Lave’s and Etienne Wenger’s theory about Communities of Practice, according which learning will occur when a beginner gradually turns into a full member of the community. The research problems were: how and what team members talk about, how they build and maintain culture in the community and what kind of a significance it has for a beginner’s ability to learn. I collected the research material through observing and recording speech during practice and games of a women’s floorball team in autumn of 2013. In addition I interviewed three players. Two of whom were beginners and one that had played floorball for several years. The material was analyzed by using methods of discourse analysis. The research material shows that the players’ views about learning process of a beginner and what influences it is similar to Lave’s and Wenger’s ideas. It was seen as very important for learning for the beginner to be able to observe and gradually attend activities in the community of practice. For this to be possible the beginner has to be committed to the community and on the other hand the community has to give the beginner justification to attend all common activities. According to results the community which was in the focus of my research should give a beginner more space and opportunities to attend conversations between team members to be able to create the best possible circumstances for the beginner to learn. The results of the research are adaptable to any kind of community of practice.

4. Do students and lecturers actively use collaboration tools in learning management systems?
- Abstract
In recent years there has been a large emphasis placed on the need to use Learning Management Systems (LMS) in the field of higher education, with many universities mandating their use. An important aspect of these systems is their ability to offer collaboration tools to build a community of learners. This paper reports on a study of the effectiveness of an LMS (Blackboard©) in a higher education setting and whether both lecturers and students voluntarily use collaborative tools for teaching and learning. Interviews were conducted with participants (N=67) from the faculties of Science and Technology, Business, Health and Law. Results from this study indicated that participants often use Blackboard© as an online repository of learning materials and that the collaboration tools of Blackboard© are often not utilised. The study also found that several factors have inhibited the use and uptake of the collaboration tools within Blackboard©. These have included structure and user experience, pedagogical practice, response time and a preference for other tools.

En samtidig øgetfokusering på forebyggelse og sundhedsfremme har øget behovet for udvikling af kundskaber og kompetencer, som kan matche disse udfordringer. Målet med studiet er, at identificere mulige mønstre vedrørende erfaringer med udvikling af fælles kundskaber og kompetencer i tværfaglige team som arbejder forebyggende og sundhedsfremmende. Der er tale om et kvalitativt studie, som bygger på fokusgruppeinterview med deltagelse af 25professionelle fra ni team inden for social-og sundhedssektoren. Otte faggrupper var repræsenteret.Der blev anvendt en memoreret temaguide til interviewene. Grounded theory blev anvendt til dataanalyse. Studiets overordnede kernekategori blev defineret som: ”sociokulturel organisation sætter dagsordenen for udvikling af kundskaber og kompetencer”. Der fremkom yderligere tre hovedkategorier som relaterede sig til kernekategorien: ”det nødvendige professionelle fundament,”den forebyggende og sundhedsfremmende diskurs”, og ”de tavse kundskaber og kompetencer”. Konklusion: Hovedfundet i studiet viste at sociokulturel organisation har væsentlig indflydelse påtværfaglige teams muligheder for at udvikle kundskaber og kompetencer i det forebyggende og sundhedsfremmende arbejde. The overall core categories emerge as: ”social cultural organization sets the agenda for creation of knowledge and competence”. Three additional overall categories related to the core category definedas: ”the needful professional foundation”, “the discourse of prevention and health promotion” and“the tacit knowledge and competence”. Conclusions: The overall findings pointed out the essential influence of the social culturalorganization on the possibility of the interprofessional co-operation to create shared knowledge in the prevention and health promotion. If space for learning and reflection in community of practice is not created the feasibility of meetings between tacit and explicit knowledge will be reduced ISBN 91-7997-099-0

8. Awareness: An Enabling Feature for mediated Interaction in Communities of Practise

The École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) is currently using a Web-based experimentation environment to support laboratory activities in engineering education. The key service for the acceptance of the learning modalities and the appropriation of the environment by the students is a shared electronic notebook called the eJournal. This service is not only used by students to perform the required laboratory work; it is also used to sustain collaboration between students. Additionally it provides support for exchanges with other services integrated in the learning environment. By tracking the creation, the exchanges and the tagging of the digital assets stored in the eJournal database, awareness can be provided. This position paper presents how the eJournal and the associated awareness features are currently enhanced to effectively support interaction in laboratory-oriented communities of practice for members using either desktop or mobile client devices.
