VALUE chains , *COOPERATION , *OIL mills , *OLIVE oil mills , *OLIVE oil - Abstract
Improving the position of the primary sector in agri-food value chains is a high priority on the EU public agenda, with the promotion of cooperation and the cooperative movement serving as key instruments for achieving this goal. However, to implement public policies that strengthen the position of farmers within these value chains, rigorous studies must be conducted. This research has a twofold purpose: firstly, to evaluate and, if necessary, design public policies aimed at determining the extent to which these policies are successfully improving the position of farmers in the value chain; and secondly, to address a less-explored issue in the literature, which is to enable agents operating within the same link of the chain to adopt measures that enhance their efficiency, based on the signals emitted by the chain itself regarding costs, prices, and margins. In this context, this paper focuses on analyzing the extra virgin olive oil value chain over two seasons, 2018/2019 and 2019/2020, to demonstrate the value chain's usefulness in achieving the aforementioned objectives. The results indicate that the weakest link in the chain is the primary sector, specifically the olive sector. However, the primary processing sector, which includes oil mills where cooperatives play a leading role, also experienced losses in both seasons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Social economy enterprises cannot shun artificial intelligence (AI) as it is useful for performing miscellaneous business tasks. The key is to use it in a manner that is consistent with the principles of the social economy and to promote the development of an AI based on its values, placing people at the centre of the economic activity. The social economy can play an important role in democratising AI, because it carries out its activities while upholding principles such as ethics, justice, democratic management, equity, sustainability and the defence of people’s interests, their communities and societies, not just profits. This paper addresses the threats that current AI development may present and sets out the opportunities the social economy affords to ensure this development is based on more ethical and democratic criteria.

Cooperatives driven by the Cooperative Identity have a scope of action that goes beyond their economic purposes. This article aims to understand how the Cooperative Identity has been discussed between the years 2019 to 2023. A systematic literature review was conducted using the Methodi Ordinatio approach on databases, and the content was analyzed using Mendeley®, VOSviewer®, and NVivo® software. The results indicate a prevalence of discussions on the 5th principle (Education, Training, and Information) and little discussion on the other six principles. Among the principles not discussed are those that impact management and, in turn, can strengthen the Cooperative Identity. In general, cooperatives are mainly treated as mere subjects of study. - Abstract
The aim of this work is to examine the unequal production and marketing structures in the Argentine yerba mate circuit through the analysis of different organizations devoted to the transformation of this raw material in the province of Misiones. To achieve this objective, the study will focus on a comparative analysis of two drying facilities: one is a cooperative and the other is part of one of the leading Argentine companies in yerba mate production and marketing. The research proposal is organized on the basis of three analysis dimensions: size and organizational structure, access to resources, and labor relations. The data collection techniques employed include fieldwork in both entities, with the application of participant observation and multiple semi-structured interviews. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COOPERATION , *INTERNATIONAL alliances , *AUTARCHY , *COMMUNITY life , *SELF-employment - Abstract
The kibbutz has succeeded in establishing a model of coexistence in Israel based on self-management. This model is aimed at settlement under a cooperative legal framework, organized on the basis of collective ownership, with the objectives of self-employment, equality, cooperation in production, consumption, and education within the context of community life. However, its reality has evolved from the original community experience to the current reality, where it has embraced cooperativism, engaging with the International Cooperative Alliance and other international cooperative movements, moving far beyond the autarchy that characterized its early days. Throughout this evolution, the kibbutz has maintained a focus on both the individual and the community, without neglecting economic realities and business efficiency. The future of these cooperatives is undoubtedly linked to the International Cooperative Alliance and cooperative principles and identity, recognizing that the cooperative model is the ultimate destination for their evolving model of coexistence. LABOR contracts , *CONTRACT labor , *INDUSTRIAL relations , *PUBLIC companies , *COOPERATIVE societies - Abstract
This article of legal reflection deals with a form of labor submission that was configured with the misuse of Cooperatives of Associated Work, which were used by companies and public entities to hide true labor relations of the contracting companies on many workers that appear as owners of the contracted cooperatives, in order to avoid the configuration of a labor contract. The jurisprudence in this regard clarifies that the reality is imposed on the form and that the contracting company is responsible for the workers associated in this type of cooperatives. COOPERATIVE agriculture ,INSTITUTIONAL environment ,SUSTAINABLE development ,SOCIAL support ,MILITARY personnel - Abstract
The objective of this article is to describe characteristics of the cooperative sector and highlight the contributions of agricultural cooperatives in promoting sustainable and resilient food systems in Brazil, Guinea‐Bissau, Portugal, and São Tomé and Principe. Semi‐structured interviews were conducted with representatives of national organizations linked to cooperativism and leaders of agricultural cooperatives in the four countries. We found great discrepancies between the institutional and regulatory environments of cooperativism in Brazil and Portugal, which have institutionalized national systems of representation, regulation, and support for the sector, and São Tomé and Principe and Guinea‐Bissau, whose environments are fragile and insecure for cooperatives. However, despite the challenges, the cases of cooperatives analyzed show how these organizations are fundamental to their members and their communities, offering technologies, social and cultural support, and technical services to their members and undertaking actions and projects to make agriculture more sustainable and productive. We conclude that the cooperative sector and cooperatives, especially those formed and run by family farmers, have taken on the role of sustainable development agents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study aims to develop and validate a measurement scale for investigating the principle of intercooperation, in order to provide researchers in the field of cooperativism with a valid and reliable measure. To this end, four main steps were followed: conceptual mastery, theoretical validation, semantic validation, and statistical validation. First, a preliminary scale was developed based on a literature review and interviews with 20 representatives of cooperatives and representative organizations. Later, the evaluation was carried out by eight academic judges and analyzed using the Content Validity Coefficient. A pre‐test was then carried out with subjects from the population, and subsequently the scale was applied to a sample of 213 cooperatives. Finally, factor analysis was performed with the aim of evaluating convergent and factorial validity as well as individual and construct reliability. Thus, it is proposed that the principle of intercooperation be measured by two different scales. The first, called "Horizontal Intercooperation", presented a Composite Reliability equal to 0.81 and Average Variance Extracted equal to 0.68. The second, called "Vertical Intercooperation", presented a Composite Reliability equal to 0.96 and Average Variance Extracted equal to 0.69. After the analyses, the proposed intercooperation scales showed signs of validity and reliability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An e-waste outreach project was developed with two overriding goals: (1) to strengthen the partnership between the university and the local recyclable material cooperative, which has been carrying out actions aimed at supporting the work of the Cooperative, and (2) to collaborate in the expansion of environmental education activities in the process of social and economic insertion of collectors and the reduction of environmental impacts. During this process, the materials and corresponding activities related to the theoretical and practical course followed by the cooperative workers were developed by a transversal team of (under)graduate students, faculty, and staff from the Chemistry, Electric Engineering, and Public Administration areas. In addition, social media materials were created to sensibilize and engage the university community regarding effective e-waste awareness, to adhere to the voluntary drop-off point of e-waste collection, and to address the issues that can affect our environment and health if e-waste is sent to landfills. It was an example of how chemistry contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals through an outreach project. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COMMUNITY-based participatory research , *BIOSPHERE reserves , *BUSINESSPEOPLE , *SEMI-structured interviews , *SUSTAINABLE development - Abstract
In the face of profound changes and needs in rural environments, tourism represents a holistic development alternative for the use of resources and social cohesion that generates benefits. In the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve in Querétaro, Mexico, several community-based tourism ventures have recently been integrated but work in a disjointed manner, limiting their strengthening and consolidation. The objective of the present study was to analyze whether the integration of a network can be a tool for local development in the region. Through participatory action research with a constructivist approach and techniques such as semi-structured interviews, community workshops and participatory observation, the visionary perspective of the communities, entrepreneurs, and the main public, private and governmental institutional actors at the local level was rescued. The results highlight cooperativism, from a theoretical perspective, as a cornerstone of community tourism, where social cohesion generates better results. On the other hand, from practice, the Network was formed with self-management and protagonism of the community, in a solidary, viable and environmentally responsible tourism activity. It is concluded by visualizing that planning from the cooperation among diverse actors can achieve a development with a sustainable approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Minas Gerais is the largest strawberry producer in Brazil. The adoption of the certification of integrated strawberry production (PIMo) would result in the commercialization of safe and quality products. The objective of this work was to implement and analyze the compliance level of the family farmers of Cooperativa Agropecuária de Alfredo Vasconcelos - MG (COOPRAV) to PIMo, aiming at certification and obtaining the quality seal. A project "Integrated Strawberry Production: Towards Certification" was prepared with the objective of adapting the farm and process to the Specific Technical Standards for Integrated Strawberry Production. The project followed three procedures: 1) workshops including theoretical and practical training; 2) monthly technical attendance; 3) participatory audits. During the workshops, there was a great demand for knowledge related to pest and diseases management and pesticide application technology. In the technical attendance, it was possible to adapt the structures of the property to the standards of the PIMo, as well as proposing the use of the field book and good agricultural practices that allowed gains in productivity. During the participatory audits, ten non-conformities were identified, which were adequate to meet the standards. Six properties were considered suitable for use the PIMo seal and the cooperative reached a production potential of 121,700 kg of certified strawberries, with a reduction of 80% in the use of fungicides, 70% in the use of insecticides and substantial gains related to the organization properties with to the places for storing pesticides and strawberry packaging. In the following article we analyze the relationship between different governance models and democratisation. To do so, we first address the more structural dimension of the issue. We observe that there is a structural relationship between governance and neoliberal governmentality; however, we find models such as those proposed by Sonia Bussu and Adrián Bua that offer us instruments to think of alternative ways of approaching the issue. Furthermore, we analyze their theoretical framework in relation to consolidated proposals such as Charles Tilly's theory of democracy. Finally, we apply the theoretical concepts to the case of Hernani Burujabe, an innovative case of democracy-driven governance.

Rural tourism can be understood as a practice that promotes the economy and quality of life through the provision of accommodation and leisure activities, with the mediating presence of the inhabitants of rural areas, and which discloses visitors a living reality in all its natural and cultural wealth. This activity can be understood, as a way of activating social processes of activation of the economy, which in turn should improve the training of local people; in the context of the profound reconversion of concepts, structures and active activities that affect rural communities. In connection with the establishment of relations between rural tourism and cooperatives, we note the ability of the social economy organizations, including cooperatives, to correct social and economic imbalance and contribute to the achievement of multiple objectives of general interest. Furthermore, cooperatives in rural areas promote endogenous development, since they make possible to maintain wealth in their area of influence, through democratic processes with a fair redistribution of the wealth generated. The tourist activity created and promoted by cooperatives involves economic diversification, and help to preserve, maintain, and improve cultural, natural, and social resources. Finally, from a social point of view this fact implies to develop and promote alliances and partnerships. Considering the relationship between rural tourism and social economy organizations, including cooperatives, the main purpose of this paper is: i) analyze the role of rural tourism as a developing factor for different regions in Spain, ii) explain the main features of the social economy organizations as drivers of economic growth, iii) explore the role of cooperativism as a tool for development of rural tourism, iv) analyze the current situation of cooperativism in relation with the rural tourism in the Valencian Community and, v) propose improvements that should be made in order to foster economic development of rural communities. Although collaborative work has a long tradition in a large part of the cooperative movement, the processes of labour precariousness in recent years, together with phenomena such as entrepreneurship and social innovation, have made these forms of work more visible and relevant. Based on a sociological approach and a qualitative methodology, three cases of recently formed organisations, which represent new experiences of cooperativism with social aims, are discussed. The article explores the conditions in which collaboration takes place and identifies some of the most significant paradoxes, tensions and discomforts that take place in these working environments. Finally, it reflects on how these collective strategies are shaping work and life alternatives that try to resist the processes of individualisation and precarisation in which they are developed.

Through a case study approach, this research considers what it means to be a cooperative school in the 21st Century and how this ideological stance impacts on stakeholders' experiences. The research sought the perceptions and experiences of 99 staff members, pupils, governors and wider community, to illuminate the act of learning to be cooperative and to explore the role of cooperative schools in the current fractured education landscape in England. Multiple qualitative methods, such as interviews and observations, were used to generate data and Engeström's Second Generation Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) was used to explore the interconnectivity of a cooperative school and to identify tensions or contradictions which exist. Tensions around performativity and power inequality mean that opportunities also exist for system level learning and so renewal of the system itself. Whilst cooperative schools are perceived as democratic organisations or 'hybrid cooperatives', they represent the inherent tension between cooperativism and neoliberalism. The cooperative schools that form the basis of my research are engaged in the activity of democratisation and enculturation, seeing this as a way of instigating a more just society. In practice, they place greater importance on serving the local community than being democratic organisations, and now fill the community spaces left by current education policy and its promotion of academisation in English schools. Enacting cooperativism on a local scale and meeting the needs of the local community is integral to these two modern cooperative schools.

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly transformed the world’s population by accelerating social, economic, market, and technological changes. In this context, the sharing economy has promoted alternative business models that transcend traditional capitalism in a digital movement disseminated by individuals, communities, and platforms that bring organizations, consumers, and providers together. Our study aims to identify and map how digital platforms based on cooperative principles can develop the sharing economy. We developed exploratory qualitative research while using netnography as a methodological procedure. First, we discuss the sharing economy based on digital platforms that foster cooperation. Second, we describe how platform cooperativism can be an alternative to the individualistic ethos of the sharing economy. Finally, we discuss alternatives with social and economic impacts to solve employment and income problems after the Covid-19 pandemic. The research contributes to the various initiatives and cooperative applications emerging in a developing country.

The objective of this article is to understand how socioeconomic and legal-institutional factors are contributing to evidence the expansion of cooperativism in gold mining in Brazil, demonstrating an overview of these organizations in the country and signaling to their reality. Data from mining requests made available by the National Mining Agency were accessed and analyzed those made by cooperatives. The results of this work are presented in two broad categories: (i) Overview of mining concessions for mineral cooperatives, which show the intense movement of application for gold mining area, especially in the Amazon, conducted by miners' cooperatives; and (ii) Densification and geographical dispersion of mineral cooperatives in Brazil, which signal the exponential expansion of mining requisitions for gold mining by cooperatives between 2019 and 2022, organizations and their dispersion to different regions of Brazil. The price of gold and the easing of the gold mining legislation in Brazil interfered widely in this movement of mineral cooperatives. Despite the expansion of the demand for gold mining made by cooperatives, this movement does not mean strengthening the social organization of miners/ miners and this suggests the importance of this research agenda and the need for its continuity.

Objective: Analyze the forms of territorial governance that are being built in the municipalities of Zapotitlán Salinas, Chila de la sal and Xicotlán at the Mixteca of Puebla, around the production of spring salt. Methodology: Review of the literature on the topic and field work between April 2022 and July 2023, carrying out 42 semi-structured interviews. Results: The recently created cooperatives as part of collective actions contribute to increasing levels of trust among producers. Limitations: Cooperatives and meetings of salt farmers to identify common problems and solutions have not yet managed to trigger local development around the use of salt. Conclusions: The distribution of resources and the organization for their use generates forms of territorial governance that oscillate between the inclusion or exclusion of salt producers. The perspective of ecoocreativity (a neologism that unites ecology, cooperativism and creativity) is to bring about a deliberate political abandonment of the economistic regulatory criteria of Saxon origin, instituted by New Public Management and the guidelines of the Washington Consensus. This is the cause of the current political disaster and the politics of disaster in Latin America. It is a necessary condition, on the one hand, to encourage social experience to propitiate the creation of a new ecological (eco-creative) class, which could establish the parameters of a new post-neoliberal imaginary. On the other hand, because it is necessary to avoid the repetition of the "more of the same" of hegemonic economism. Another alternative is the "eco-fascist" perspectives, the result of substantive democratic degradation. For this reason, we propose twelve criteria for action as a horizon of what is possible to experience collectively, to make a general contribution to the democratic political debate. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a global priority in terms of commitment to the responsible development of society. This paper focuses on beekeeping as a strategic sector of the Argentine economy due to its important socio-economic and environmental impacts. The objective of this research is to analyze the practices of beekeeping entities in their alignment with the achievement of the SDGs (with a focus on SDGs 5, 8, 9, 12 and 17), paying special attention to the differential contribution of companies with cooperative formula. It focuses on actions related to work organization, production, innovation and market insertion. To this end, we used variable significance analysis for 2x2 matrices and multivariate factor analysis of multiple correspondences. The results obtained show that there is a positive alignment between the practices of beekeeping sector entities and SDG 5, SDG 12 and SDG 17, with a differential and positive trend for organizations with a cooperative formula. However, the results also show the future challenges faced by the sector, especially with regard to SDGs 8 and 9. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COOPERATIVE banking industry , *SOCIAL influence , *ECONOMIC development , *COOPERATIVE societies , *BUSINESS enterprises - Abstract
Cooperativism as a socioeconomic model, with its organizations, increasingly has the potential to influence the needs of communities, especially in the Latin American region. In Ecuador, the presence of cooperatives in the savings and credit sector is notorious from the economic and financial point of view, however, the evidence that the social component is not handled at the same level, based on previous studies, constitutes the main background for the development of this work that shows an analytical and systemic reflection on the matter. An analysis of the situation of the national cooperative sector was carried out to reinforce the role of cooperatives as socioeconomic enterprises with extraordinary capacities to achieve the change to which families, communities and the nation aspire. The research developed is of a theoretical and analytical nature. A systemic analysis was obtained with certain recommendations in relation to overcoming the problems present in Ecuadorian savings and credit cooperatives, with a view to integrally managing the social and economic components, a fundamental premise for achieving the results expected from their activity at the local and national level. On one hand, this research is framed within the results of two Spanish public housing interventions, and on the other, the beginnings of an extended collaborative housing model on the island of Gran Canaria. The research analyzes collaborative housing and its relationship with the management mechanisms that can or should accompany public policies for housing, by observing the cases of Andalusia and Barcelona, both inspired by Uruguay's cooperative housing model. After studying the case on the island of Gran Canaria, the need for housing policies that incorporate mutual aid, transfer of use, cooperativism, or citizen participation is proposed. GOVERNMENT purchasing , *TECHNICAL assistance , *POULTRY - Abstract
Many family farmers use cooperativism as a tool to strengthen productive environments and envision productive diversification as an income generation strategy. This study analyzed the diversification project promoted by CAPUL in 2020, in the municipality of Arinos - MG, focusing on the production of free-range birds (Gallus gallus domesticus) to supply the demand for school meals and local commerce. The objective of this study was to analyze the economic and social impacts that the project generated in the lives of family farmers and elucidate the relevance of cooperativism for the promotion of productive diversification, as well as to highlight the detachments and obstacles that existed during the execution of the project. The self-administered questionnaire was used as the primary data source, considering a universe of 14 family farmers. The data were obtained through qualitative and quantitative instruments and were tabulated using the Microsoft Excel program. For descriptive statistical analysis of the results, a cluster analysis was used with the hierarchical method by the Ward model. It is concluded with this research that the project entitled Frango Caipirão CAPUL caused impacts on the lives of family farmers and that the cooperative, through its ATER actions, exerted influences on the social and economic reproduction of the participants of that study, contributing to the strengthening family farming. It is implied, therefore, that other actions in the same segment can use this master's dissertation as a guideline. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
