Human Macroscopic Anatomy (MHA) is the foundation of clinical knowledge for health professions. Its learning involves understanding the spatial location of body structures, the anatomical reference position, international anatomical terminology and the literacy involved in its study. The objective is to promote an understanding of the AMH through an anatomical and interactive model, which in this case is exemplified by the heart and its adjacent structures. For the proposal for the development of the anatomical model, seven phases were adopted: identification of a deficiency, search for a possible solution, definition of an objective for the construction of an anatomical model, in-depth theoretical review, proposal for creation with graphic design software, search and selection of materials and preparation of a guide for the construction of the manipulable anatomical model in 360°. Software was exported to an easy-to-print two-dimensional polygonal format, then the materials were chosen; Finally, the 360° anatomical model was assembled and the respective guides were prepared. The construction of anatomical models that are three-dimensional, favors the Teaching- Learning (E-L) processes by involving the student in building their knowledge, thereby allowing them to observe, identify, differentiate and spatially locate the anatomical structures through artistic pieces. The average volumes of normal heart chambers in computed tomography (CT) are used not only as clinical criterions for heart disease diagnosis, but also as references in cardiology. With the development of artificial intelligence (AI), numerous CT data can be analyzed and segmented automatically. This study aimed to determine the average volumes of the four chambers in healthy adult hearts and present surface models with the average volume. Coronary CT angiographs of 508 Korean individuals (330 men and 178 women, 20 – 39 years old) were obtained. An automatic segmentation module for 3D Slicer was developed using machine learning in Anatomage KoreaTM. Using the module, the four chambers and heart valves in the CT were segmented and reconstructed into surface models. Surface models of the four chambers of identical hearts in the CT were produced using SimplewareTM. The volumes of structures were measured using Sim4life Light and statistically analyzed. After determining the average volumes of the four chambers, surface models of the average volumes were constructed. In both software measurements, the atrial volumes of females increased with age, and the ventricular volumes of males decreased significantly with age. The atrial and ventricular volumes of Simpleware were larger and smaller than those of Anatomage, respectively, because of errors in the Simpleware. Regarding the volume measurement, our module developed in this study was more accurate than the Simpleware. The average volume and three-dimensional models used in this study can be used not only for clinical purposes, but also for educational or industrial purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LIPOIC acid , *HEART , *OXIDATIVE stress , *MICROSOMES , *REACTIVE oxygen species , *OXIDANT status - Abstract
Oxidative stress is caused by the overproduction of reactive oxygen species that generate an imbalance in the cellular antioxidant capacity. In this study, the effect of alpha-lipoic acid on microsomes isolated from rat brain and heart was analyzed by determining chemiluminescence (expressed as counts per minute) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances. Oxidative stress was induced by subjecting the samples to an ascorbate-Fe++-dependent pro-oxidant system at 37 °C for 120 minutes. The inhibitory effect of alpha-lipoic acid was compared using different concentrations thereof, corresponding to 50, 150 and 250 [ig per mg of microsomal protein. Controls were performed simultaneously without the addition of the pro-oxidant. A significant increase in light emission and malondialdehyde was observed in the microsomes of both organs in the ascorbate-Fe++ group. Analysis of chemiluminescence levels and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances indicated that alpha-lipoic acid acted as an antioxidant that protected rat heart microsomes from damage by lipid peroxidation at all doses tested. In brain microsomes, alpha-lipoic acid was observed to act as an antioxidant only at the 150 |ig/ml dose. In the latter case, it will be necessary to test new doses of it to demonstrate the effects on these membranes. In conclusion, alpha-lipoic acid acted as an antioxidant to protect the membranes of both organs against peroxidative damage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Papillary muscles in the left ventricle present multiple anatomic expressions that are relevant for medical fields focusing on the understanding of clinical events involving these structures. Here, the aim was to perform a morphological characterization of the left ventricle papillary muscles in a sample of Colombian population. In the study were included eighty-two hearts from male individuals who underwent autopsy at the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences in Bucaramanga, Colombia. In each heart was carefully performed a longitudinal incision on the obtuse margin to visualize the papillary muscles. Data set was registered, and analysis of the continuous and categorical variables was carried out. Single anterior papillary muscle was observed in 74 samples (90.2 %) whereas this represented only 48 specimens (58.5 %) for the posterior papillary muscle (p = 0.3). Mean length and breadth of the anterior muscle were 29.9 ± 4.94 and 11.74 ± 2.75 mm, and those for the posterior muscle were 27.42 ± 7.08 and 10.83 ± 4.08 mm. Truncated apical shape was the most frequent type observed on the papillary muscles, anterior 41 (50 %) and posterior 37 (45.1 %), followed by flat-topped in the anterior 25 (30.5 %) and bifurcated in posterior muscle 14 (17.1 %). A mean of 9.04 ± 2.75 chordae raised from the anterior and 7.50 ± 3.3 from posterior papillary muscle. In our study we observed a higher incidence of single papillary muscles and slightly larger dimensions than information reported in the literature. The anatomic diversity of the papillary muscles should be considered for the correct image interpretation, valve implantation and performance evaluation on myocardial ischemic events.

The Chinese alligator (Alligator sinensis) belongs to the genus Alligator, which is a unique crocodile in China. In order to study the macroscopic structure of the heart of Chinese alligator, we performed detailed cardiac anatomy on five specimens. The heart is in the cranial mediastinum. It is caudally involved by the liver cranial margins, and ventrally by the ribs, intercostal muscles, and sternum and dorsally by the lungs. The wild Chinese alligator heart is a typical four-chamber heart, with two (right and left) atria and ventricles, left and right aorta, pulmonary artery and subclavian artery branch from the aorta. Morphology measures the circumference (129.36 mm), weight (44.14 g), and length of the heart from apex to bottom (52.50 mm). Studies have shown that the shape of the wild Chinese alligator’s heart is consistent with the anatomy of other crocodiles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MYOCARDIAL infarction , *CARDIOVASCULAR diseases risk factors , *ANGINA pectoris , *POLLUTANTS , *NATRIURETIC peptides - Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the main cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, especially affecting the population over 60 years of age, they can manifest depending on their origin in coronary disease (acute myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, sudden cardiac arrest, heart failure and sudden death) and cerebrovascular disease (strokes and transient ischemic events). Several risk factors associated with the development of CVD have been described, the classic factors (modifiable and non-modifiable), and others that have been added to the list as a result of new evidence, such as inflammation, thrombosis, stress, alterations in the levels of natriuretic peptides, heavy metals/environmental pollutants, renal insufficiency, and some infectious agents. The objective of this article is to present the state of the art associated with classic cardiovascular risk factors (CRFs) and the evidence that supports emerging CRFs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The balance of the heart in athletes favors morphological and functional stability that favors cardiovascular function parameters within normal ranges, manifested in adequate values of: systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate and physical fitness for training and daily activities. Due to the biological sacrifices that this implies, retired water polo athletes suffer from cardiovascular morphofunctional adaptations that must be addressed when they accept retirement and move on to sports detraining, which constitutes a prophylactic and therapeutic strategy for the health care of athletes. Early interventions are proposed, with aerobic work schedules, to balance cardiovascular morphofunctional adaptations in retired high-performance athletes.

Systemic lupus erythematous (SLE) is an autoimmune disease with clinical manifestations in multiple organs, primarily striking women of reproductive age. Women with SLE can became pregnant such as any other healthy woman and carrier their pregnancy to term due to the improvement of health systems, but their specific inflammatory conditions could affect the microenvironment in which the fetus grows, and influence the development of placenta and the fetal heart. Until now, there is very little evidence of any increased risk of postnatal cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the apparently healthy children from women with SLE, but it is this great variability in the effects of lupus on pregnant products is related to. Acromegaly is a rare disease, mainly caused by a pituitary tumor secreting growth hormone. It is characterized by slow progression and is associated with a multisystemic involvement, being the cardiovascular system, one of the most involved, even reaching, more than 10 years ago, to represent the main cause of death. Cardiovascular complications develop as a result of elevated blood concentrations of growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor 1, which exert direct and indirect effects on the endothelium, large vessels, kidney and cardiomyocytes; causing arterial hypertension, valve disease, cardiac arrhythmia and a specific heart disease called acromegalic cardiomyopathy. After the literature overview related to the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular involvement, we found that from a cardiovascular point of view, patients with acromegaly can range from an asymptomatic state to severe cardiac dysfunction, being the biochemical markers and imaging studies diagnostic tools that allow assessment the degree of cardiovascular disease in order to provide individualized treatment. The normalization of growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor 1 levels improves cardiovascular parameters, and therefore its prognosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract

- Abstract
Obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) significantly increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation, heart failure, and sudden cardiac death. This risk is proportional to body mass index (BMI), is exacerbated by comorbidities such as hypertension and dyslipidemia, and includes emerging risk factors like insulin resistance, low-grade chronic inflammation, and thrombosis tendency. The distribution of adipose tissue, especially visceral fat and ectopic deposition in the heart, is another key factor in the development of cardiovascular diseases in these patients, along with atrial and ventricular remodeling. Bariatric surgery has been shown to be effective in reducing these risks. The prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases in obesity and T2D include lifestyle changes, specific pharmacological treatment and management of comorbidities, and attention to cardiovascular risk factors., (Copyright © 2024. Usually sexual hormones have been linked to its role in reproduction and development of sexual secondary characteristics. This has changed in time, nowadays it is known that they are involved in development and maturation of muscle, bone in neuronal and cognitive processes, and even in bioenergetic processes through the control that are capable to exert over mitocondria the organelle that produces the bioenergetic coin in the body, adenosin tryphosphate (ATP). These mitochondrion are specially numerous in organs with high metabolism such as liver and heart, in the last one is where the experimental evidence has revealed that the presence or absence of estrogens, could have a big impact in its function.

The formaldehyde solution is used in medical schools as a means of fixing and preserving corpses for the study of Anatomy, to which students, technicians and teaching personnel are exposed; it is allergenic and irritant to the mucosa, and recognized as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (2006). The objective of the present study was to compare quantitative and qualitative results between Gallus gallus domesticus hearts, after applying solutions with and without formaldehyde. Two groups were formed at random, to one a 10 % formaldehyde solution was applied, and to the other formaldehydefree solution. Anthropometric, organoleptic, and photographic measurements were carried out (Pretest, during and Posttest). A database was prepared in Microsoft Excel (2019), and its processing in SPSS Statistics 2017 Version 25. For quantitative variables, the Shapiro-Wilk test and t-Student paired were applied. For qualitative variables the Cronbach's Alpha test, Chi square (X2) and the corresponding association coefficients (Somers D and Kendal's Tau b). The results obtained from the variables weight, length, and height presented a statistically significant difference (p-value <0.05), being different for the width and thickness of the left ventricular wall. The variables color and consistency showed significant differences (p-value <0.05). The irritating smell to the mucous membranes was present throughout the study with the formaldehyde solution. Upon inspection, neither group showed colonization - decomposition. It is concluded that the organs in experimentation that were applied formaldehyde-free solution presented better results compared to those that were applied 10 % formaldehyde. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The image of the heart regularly appears in our daily lives: it decorates multiple everyday objects, such as clothing, logos, shop windows, and it appears on graffiti. Additionally, it is ubiquitous in the digital world, as the "like" button is often in the shape of a heart. The aim of this paper is to identify the reasons why the image of the heart is so widespread, and the functions performed by its representation. In order to do so, we carried out a linguistic and semiotic landscape study, by analysing a large corpus of images of hearts, collected in the urban landscape and on the Internet. The results show that the hearts found in the two corpora perform all language functions identified by Jakobson (1984); the main contexts of use of the heart are the expression of love, appreciation, and gratitude. Finally, we comment on the "transfer" of functions of the heart from street to screen and vice versa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective. The present paper aims to investigate the role of computed tomography as an imaging technique of diagnosis in the identification of the os cordis in ovine, and also how this anatomical structure is morphotopographically characterized in macro and microscopic contexts, seeking to contribute for its functional understanding. Materials and method. The heart of a young male ovine had been donated to the Laboratory of Animal Anatomy of the Surgery Department of the FMVZ/USP, first being subject to a post-mortem examination by means of the cardiac "shedding" (transverse cross sectioning of the heart). A tomographic examination of the anatomic specimen was carried out, as well as the dissection and histological analysis of the collected sample. Results. The results indicate the presence of an osseous structure of 6.39 mm in length, located in the aortic valve of the heart, next to a ring comprised by three valve flaps, tendinous cords, and papillary muscles. The histological findings consist of fibrous connective tissue, cancellous bone tissue, and calcified hyaline cartilage wherein the cardiomyocytes are attached. Conclusions. It is concluded that computed tomography, even though seldom applied to animals of zootechnical interest, poses as an effective tool for the visualization of the os cordis in lambs.
