We study the interdependence in couples’ retirement decisions using the mandatory retirement age extension in Japan. Using two cohorts born in 1945 against in 1946 with the same pension eligible age but with a three-year-difference in retirement age due to a sudden statutory change, we examine the impact of raising the retirement age on the policy targets and their spouses. These results show that raising the legal retirement age increases employment probability after age 60 for husbands and during the same period for their wives. The results support the importance of considering the complementarity in couples’ retirement decisions in making policy design and structural estimations., 本研究は、日本の法定退職年齢の引き上げを用いて夫婦の退職の意思決定における相互依存性を検証した。1945年生まれと1946年生まれの2コホートは法定退職年齢の引き上げにより、年金受給開始年齢が同じにも関わらず、退職年齢には3歳分の差が生じることとなった。これら2つのコホートを比較して、退職年齢の引き上げが政策変更の対象となった本人およびその配偶者に与える影響を明らかにした。その結果、法定退職年齢の引き上げは、夫の60歳以降の就業確率だけでなく、その妻の就労確率をも高めることが明らかになった。この結果は、政策設計や構造推計を行う上で、夫婦の退職決定における補完性を考慮することの重要性を指摘している。

Nowadays explaining the behavior of household members is not considered as a neglected black box, and interactions between household members, can influence household consumption, employment and thus its welfare. Applying unitary model, the goal of this research is to estimate and study labor supply functions of dual-earner couples who have non-labor income, using Iranian rural-urban families' cost-expenditure data in year 2013. Supposing wage variable is endogenous, the estimation procedure is based on generalized method of moments. Our findings show that in the pattern of married women's labor supply, inverse of Mill's ratio is negative and statistically significant. So, computing this variable by Heckman's Two Step Model results in consistency of results. The elasticity of own wage labor supply of both couples is positive and statistically significant. From this point of view, the couple's labor supply curve, in studied sample, has standard shape. Studying cross wage elasticity, shows that couples' leisure time are complementary. In line with theoretical base, a rise in non-labor income has negative and statistically significant effect on couples' labor supply hours.

Online October 2016; International audience; Many OECD countries are reforming their pension systems. We investigate how pension eligibility affects labor supply in couples. Inspired by a theoretical framework, we measure how the sharp change in the pension eligibility of both partners affects labor force participation. We find that both partners leave the labor force as they become eligible for a pension. The effect of their own pension eligibility is 12 percentage points for women and 28 percentage points for men. Women also reduce their labor force participation by 2 to 3 percentage points as their partner reaches pension eligibility. For men, the effect of their partner's eligibility is smaller and not significantly different from zero. For women and men with low education, the effect of their own eligibility is strong. Regardless of education level, the partner eligibility effect is strong in homogamous couples. Studying joint labor supply, we find that pension eligibility reduces labor supply in couples by 44 percentage points, approximately 4 percentage points more than in a model that ignores partner eligibility effects.
