Its basin has a semi-arid climate with alternating dry and wet seasons in a biogeographic context of savannah. The West African monsoon brings rain between June and September with a long dry period affecting river levels and vegetation. The rainfall and flow of the Milo River have declined of about 20 % since the 1970s. Trees that concentrate mainly along river margins are likely to be affected by this change in climate and water resource. Little data is available on the age, growth rate and origin of water used by riparian trees in Guinea. These data are nevertheless essential for measuring the impact of environmental changes on the functioning and sustainability of riparian forests. A dendrochronological and dendroisotopic study was carried out on trees bordering the Milo River in order to test the effectiveness of these techniques for obtaining such data. A difficulty with the use of dendrochronology in tropical environments is that few species form annual rings. Of thirteen tree species studied half form more or less distinct ring boundaries but three species showed clearly visible ring boundaries. These species are Pericopsis laxiflora, Tamarindus indica and Tectona grandis. This study shows that it is possible to estimate the age (15 to 102 years) and radial growth rates (0.26 to 1.39 cm/year) for species with discernible rings. However, the poor anatomical definition of ring boundaries on most of the other species, especially towards the pith, highlights all the difficulty of conducting a long-term, robust, dendroclimatic study in the semi-arid African context. A dendroisotopic test analysis (delta 13C, delta 18O) on a single tree of Pericopsis laxiflora, Tamarindus indica and Tectona grandis shows that this riparian species is able to regulate its water acquisition during hydrological variations. This is marked by a physical trace in the rings related to the use of the more perennial alluvial water during the dry period.; La rivière Milo, en Guinée, est l'un des affluents du haut-Niger. Phenotypic plasticity is the ability of individual genotypes to adjust to environmental variation. In this thesis we used larch annual ring traits to estimate phenotypic plasticity at two-time scales: between years (chap. 1, inter-annual phenotypic plasticity) and within years (chap. 2, intra-annual phenotypic plasticity). In chap. 1 we analyzed annual rings of European larches distributed in four plots along a natural elevational gradient near Briançon, in the French Alps. The phenotypic plasticity of radial growth and latewood density as a function of maximum temperature tends to be negative at low elevation (1350 m) and distinctly positive at high elevations (2300 m), where European larch seems to react favorably to temperature increase. No elevation trend emerges for earlywood density, which mostly exhibits negative or null phenotypic plasticity. The phenotypic plasticity of mean ring density is intermediate between that of earlywood and of latewood density. In chap. 2 we used intra-annual radial growth curves recorded with automatic point dendrometers during four successive growing seasons in an experimental trial combiningseveral water regimes and three species of larch. From such curves we obtainedphenotypic plasticity variables for radial growth and the dynamics of water in the trunk as a function of several climatic variables. All phenotypic plasticity variables and all environmental conditions combined, hybrid larch is a little more plastic than Japanese larchand much more than European larch, which reflects its ability to quickly and efficiently replenish and use his water reserve. We hypothesize that this contributes to its greater vigor.In general, there are as many types of plasticity as there are combinations of phenotypic traits and environmental variable. Phenotypic plasticity summarizes in a single value all the dynamics of a particular response. While in natural selection a high plasticity seems to be an advantage, it is not so evident in artificial selection., La plasticité phénotypique permet aux génotypes de s’ajuster à des variations environnementales. Dans cette thèse nous avons utilisé des caractères de cernes annuels de mélèzes pour estimer la plasticité phénotypique à deux échelles de temps: entre années (chap. 1, plasticité interannuelle) et dans l’année (chap. 2, plasticité intra-annuelle). Dans le chap. 1 nous avons analysé des cernes annuels de mélèzes d’Europe distribués dans quatre placettes le long d’un gradient altitudinal naturel de la région de Briançon, dans les Alpes françaises. La plasticité phénotypique de la croissance radiale et de la densité du bois final en fonction de la température maximale tend à être négative à basse altitude (1350 m) et surtout positive à haute altitude (2300 m), où le mélèze d’Europe semble réagir favorablement à l’augmentation de la température. Aucune tendance altitudinale ne se dégage pour la densité du bois initial, qui présente en majorité une plasticité négative ou nulle. La plasticité phénotypique de la densité moyenne du cerne est intermédiaire entre celle du bois initial et celle du bois final. Dans le chap. 2 nous avons utilisé des courbes de croissance radiale intra-annuelle enregistrées à l’aide de dendromètres automatiques pendant quatre années dans un dispositif combinant plusieurs régimes hydriques et trois espèces de mélèze. Nous en avons extrait des variables de plasticité phénotypique pour la croissance radiale et la dynamique de l’eau dans le tronc en fonction de plusieurs variables climatiques. Toutes variables de plasticité phénotypique et toutes conditions environnementales confondues, l’hybride est un peu plus plastique que le mélèze du Japon et beaucoup plus que le mélèze d’Europe, ce qui traduit sa capacité à reconstituer et à utiliser rapidement et efficacement cette réserve en eau. Nous faisons l’hypothèse que cela contribue à sa plus grande vigueur. De façon générale, il y a autant de plasticités phénotypiques que d’associations caractère phénotypique/variable environnementale. La plasticité phénotypique résume en une seule valeur toute la dynamique d’une réponse particulière. Si en sélection naturelle une plasticité élevée parait constituer un avantage, ce n’est pas aussi évident en sélection artificielle.

International audience; Dieback of Atlas cedars is a complex phenomenon that has been affecting the cedar forests of the Aurès mountains and Theniet El Had since the 1980s. Its causes are still unknown. This study focused on the cedar forest of Theniet El Had in order to gain a better understanding of the way Atlas cedar dieback is evolving over time and space and to establish whether it has any relationship with environmental factors. Two approaches were applied. In the first, a spatial approach, the distribution of affected trees was mapped out according to altitude, slope, exposure, dendrometric parameters (diameter and height) and state of health (percentage of defoliation). In the temporal approach, radial growth rates were compared between affected and healthy trees in six ecological stations that were representative of Atlas cedar stands in the study zone. The results show that dieback is more severe in the Theniet El Had forest towards its lower limits in steeply sloping low-altitude stations exposed to sunlight and heat. Dieback is advanced and affects adult and/or aging trees. The trees affected stand out for their poor growth and very high average sensitivity to climatic factors. The prolonged drought in the region from 1980 to 2002 has exacerbated the effects of aging, which has affected and worsened the state of health of the Atlas cedars. These results point to the urgency of undertaking sylvicultural work to improve the health of these stands and to establish sampling plots.; El agostamiento del cedro del Atlas en Argelia es un fenómeno complejo que ha afectado a los cedrales de Aurès y Theniet El Had desde los años 1980, y cuyas causas todavía son desconocidas. Para comprender mejor la evolución espaciotemporal del agostamiento del cedro del Atlas y establecer una eventual relación con los factores del medio, nuestro trabajo se ha focalizado en elcedral de Theniet El Had. Este estudio se basa en dos enfoques. Uno, espacial, inventaría la repartición de los árboles agostados según la altitud, la pendiente, la exposición, así como sus parámetros dendrométricos (diámetro, altura) y su estado de salud (tasa de defoliación). El otro, temporal, compara la evolución del crecimiento radial de los árboles agostados y de los árboles sanos en seisestaciones ecológicas representativas de las masas de cedro del Atlas en la zona de estudio. Los resultados muestran que el fenómeno de agostamiento del cedro del Atlas ha afectado más al cedral de Theniet El Had hacia su límite inferior, en estaciones situadas a baja altitud, en terrenos de fuerte pendiente y con exposiciones soleadas y cálidas. Este fenómeno se presenta en un estado avanzado, y los árboles agostados son árboles adultos y/o viejos. Los árboles agostados se distinguen por un débil crecimiento y una sensitividad media al clima muy elevada. Además del efecto de la edad, la sequía prolongada en la región durante el período 1980-2002 afectó y agravó el estado de salud del cedro del Atlas. Estos resultados ponen al día la urgencia de emprender tareas silvícolas para mejorar el estado de salud de las masas e implementar un dispositivo de vigilancia de la salud del cedro.; Le dépérissement du cèdre de l’Atlas en Algérie est un phénomène complexe qui a affecté les cédraies des Aurès et Theniet El Had depuis les années 1980, et dont les causes restent inconnues. Pour mieux comprendre l’évolution spatio-temporelle du dépérissement du cèdre de l’Atlas et établir une éventuelle relation avec les facteurs du milieu, notre travail s’est focalisé sur la cédraie de Theniet El Had. Ce travail est basé sur deux approches. L’une, spatiale, recense la répartition des arbres dépéris selonl’altitude, la pente, l’exposition, ainsi que leurs paramètres dendrométriques (diamètre, hauteur) et leur état de santé (taux de défoliation). L’autre, temporelle, compare l’évolution de la croissance radiale des arbres dépéris et des arbres sains dans six stations écologiques représentatives des peuplements de cèdre de l’Atlas dans la zone d’étude. Les résultats montrent que le phénomène de dépérissement du cèdre de l’Atlas a davantage marqué la cédraie de Theniet El Had vers sa limite inférieure, dans des stations situées à basse altitude, sur des terrains à forte pente et aux expositions ensoleillées et chaudes. Ce phénomène se présente dans un étatavancé, et les arbres dépéris sont desarbres adultes et/ou âgés. Les arbresdépéris se distinguent par une faiblecroissance et une sensitivité moyenneau climat très élevée. En plus de l’effetde l’âge, la sécheresse prolongée dans larégion au cours de la période 1980-2002a affecté et aggravé l’état de santé ducèdre de l’Atlas. Ces résultats mettent aujour l’urgence d’entreprendre des travauxsylvicoles pour améliorer l’état de santédes peuplements et de mettre en placeun dispositif de surveillance de la santédu cèdre.

Annual radial growth and latewood formation increase during the period 1966–2015 in Larix cajanderi Mayr. and Pinus sylvestris L. along a latitudinal gradient on Siberian permafrost. Warmer temperatures and precipitation at the onset of the growth season favor growth in both species. A vast area of Siberian boreal forest is covered by continuous permafrost, where tree radial growth is strongly limited by low temperatures. Understanding how climate controls Siberian conifer growth is critical in order to predict their response to ongoing climate change. To explore variations in the radial growth and earlywood/latewood formation of Pinus sylvestris L. and Larix cajanderi Mayr. trees along a climate gradient within the continuous permafrost zone in Central Yakutia (Russia), a region experiencing accelerated warming. We evaluated spatiotemporal differences in tree-ring and latewood width among sites by using generalized additive mixed models. Pearson’s correlations were used to analyze the effect of local climate (temperature, precipitation) and drought (SPEI) on the formation of earlywood and latewood. Both conifers showed increased radial growth in recent decades. Radial growth was controlled by temperature and precipitation in both species along the gradient, with earlier precipitation events being critical for the formation of wide rings. Although temperature is considered as the main limiting factor triggering tree growth in the continuous permafrost zone, our results showed that water availability also plays a key role in radial tree growth even in the coldest sites.

Wood, the most abundant biological compound on earth, is of crucial importance for Humankind and Biosphere. Although tree rings and the process of xylogenesis that creates them have long been under the microscope of biologists, it is only recently that the invention of new techniques has made it possible to monitor the intra-annual dynamics of xylem formation by the cambium, along with the environmental conditions that influence it.In most regions of the world cambial activity follows a seasonal cycle. At the beginning of the growing season, when temperatures increase, the cambium resumes activity. During the growing season, new xylem cells produced by the cambium are undergoing profound transformations, passing through successive differentiation stages, which will enable them to perform their future functions in trees. Finally, at the end of the growing season, when climatic conditions deteriorate, cambial activity stops, soon followed by the cessation of all the differentiation processes.In this manuscript, after reviewing the biological basis of wood formation and describing the methods that allow its monitoring, we investigate and model the relationships between cambium phenology, tree-ring formation dynamics, tracheid differentiation kinetics, and the climatic factors. The results obtained are used to describe the coordination between stem growth in size and in biomass, as well as the relationships between the source (the canopy) and the main sink (the cambium) of carbon in trees.Finally, three promising research avenues are presented, exploring the relationships between: (1) the intra-annual dynamics of woody biomass production and gross primary productivity; (2) the intra-annual dynamics of water conduction in xylem and stem sap flow and stand evapotranspiration; (3) the kinetics of tracheid differentiation and the creation of the isotopic signals in tree-ring archives.In the context of accelerating global changes, it is crucial to investigate what is ruling tree-ring formation and wood production, in order to better evaluate how the ongoing modifications of the environmental factors are impacting trees, biogeochemical cycles, human societies, and ultimately the climate itself.

International audience; Key messagePeriodic bending of young poplars increase the wood production whatever their hydric status; especially in the most highly stressed zones; improving the mechanical behaviour of the stem.AbstractThe ability of trees to acclimate the building of their structures to windy conditions under various hydric conditions is essential in the context of the predicted climate changes. In this study, we investigated the biomechanical responses of young poplar trees to periodic controlled bending stimulations that mimic the mechanical effect of trees growing under windy conditions. This treatment was conducted for 5months in well-watered conditions or under hydric stress. Results demonstrate the high impact of thigmomorphogenesis on growth processes, even under the water shortage. While axial growth was reduced by mechanical stimulations and hydric stress, radial growth was strongly increased by the periodic stem bending. The secondary growth was preferentially increased in the direction of highest longitudinal strains leading to the ovalisation of the cross-section. This ovalisation yielded 16%, regardless the hydric condition and generated a huge increase of the bending rigidity of the trees (+212%). Further, we observed a differential growth between the side growing under tension and the side growing under compression. A Finite Element model was built to investigate the mechanical benefits of the anisotropic cross-section shapes. This FE model enlightened the modulation of the spatial stress distribution that lead to a reduction of the stress in the weakest zones of the trunk; suggesting an improvement of the mechanical safety margin of wood. Thigmomorphogenesis acclimation appears as a complex and costly, but necessary process for the long-term mechanical support of the trees, even under hydric stress conditions.

We report a case-study evaluating temporal series of wood ring traits of hybrid larch (Larix decidua x L. kaempferi and reciprocal) in relation to soil water availability. Growth rings record the tree plastic responses to past environmental conditions, and we used random regressions to estimate the reaction norms of ring width and wood density with respect to water availability. We investigated the role of phenotypic plasticity on the construction of hybrid larch heterosis and on the expression of its quantitative genetic parameters. The data came from an intra-/interspecific diallel mating design between both parental species. Progenies were grown in two environmentally contrasted sites, in France. Ring width plasticity with respect to water availability was confirmed, as all three taxa produced narrower rings under the lowest water availability. Hybrid larch appeared to be the most plastic taxon as its superiority over its parental species increased with increasing water availability. Despite the low heritabilities of the investigated traits, we found that the expression of a reliable negative correlation between them was conditional to the water availability environment. Finally, by means of a complementary simulation, we demonstrated that random regression can be applied to model the reaction norms of non-repeated records of phenotypic plasticity bound by a family structure. Random regression is a powerful tool for the modeling of reaction norms in various contexts, especially perennial species.

Tree mortality is a key driver of forest dynamics and its occurrence is projected to increase in the future due to climate change. Despite recent advances in our understanding of the physiological mechanisms leading to death, we still lack robust indicators of mortality risk that could be applied at the individual tree scale. Here, we build on a previous contribution exploring the differences in growth level between trees that died and survived a given mortality event to assess whether changes in temporal autocorrelation, variance, and synchrony in time-series of annual radial growth data can be used as early warning signals of mortality risk. Taking advantage of a unique global ring-width database of 3065 dead trees and 4389 living trees growing together at 198 sites (belonging to 36 gymnosperm and angiosperm species), we analyzed temporal changes in autocorrelation, variance, and synchrony before tree death (diachronic analysis), and also compared these metrics between trees that died and trees that survived a given mortality event (synchronic analysis). Changes in autocorrelation were a poor indicator of mortality risk. However, we found a gradual increase in inter-annual growth variability and a decrease in growth synchrony in the last ∼20 years before mortality of gymnosperms, irrespective of the cause of mortality. These changes could be associated with drought-induced alterations in carbon economy and allocation patterns. In angiosperms, we did not find any consistent changes in any metric. Such lack of any signal might be explained by the relatively high capacity of angiosperms to recover after a stress-induced growth decline. Our analysis provides a robust method for estimating early-warning signals of tree mortality based on annual growth data. In addition to the frequently reported decrease in growth rates, an increase in inter-annual growth variability and a decrease in growth synchrony may be powerful predictors of gymnosperm mortality risk, but not necessarily so for angiosperms. To cope with changing climate, several silvicultural practices are deemed important including managing mixed species stands and decreasing stand density. The main aims of the thesis are to find key processes for growth response and to highlight the possible mechanisms of the practices (1) on availability of water resources, and during a summer drought on (2) individual growth and resistance, (3) the complementarity between the two species on the depth of water acquisition and (4) maintenance of sap-flow density (Fd). Sessile oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.) and Scots' pines (Pinus sylvestris L.) are used in this thesis based on the OPTMix experimental site. The oaks functional strategy, by keeping higher stomatal conductance, leads to a greater rate of decrease in groundwater table level and to lower water availability compared to the pines. This strategy allows the oaks to show greater drought resistance in mixed stands. Positive effects of mixture on oak growth did not occur in low density stands. Pine trees did not show this mixing - density interaction. Partial complementarity between the two species on the depth of water acquisition in mixed stands decreased water stress on oaks without any changes for the pines. This resulted in an independent Fd - composition response. Nevertheless, drought periods accumulation decreased Fd more for oaks more than that of pines. The interaction of the two silvicultural practices during summer drought seems to be only beneficial for oak.; Pour faire face aux changements climatiques plusieurs solutions sylvicoles sont envisagées, dont le mélange des essences et la diminution de la densité. Les principaux objectifs de la thèse étaient d'isoler les processus déterminants la croissance et d'identifier les mécanismes sous-jacents de ces stratégies sylvicoles (mélange - densité) (1) sur les ressources hydriques disponibles, et en contexte de sécheresse estivale sur (2) la croissance et la résistance des individus, (3) la complémentarité entre les deux essences sur la profondeur d'acquisition de l'eau et (4) le maintien de la densité de flux de sève (Fd). Le chêne sessile (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.) et le pin sylvestre (Pinus sylvestris L.) ont été utilisés dans ce travail de thèse en s'appuyant sur le dispositif OPTMix. La stratégie fonctionnelle des chênes, grâce au maintien de la conductance stomatique plus important de cette essence, entraîne une vitesse de retrait de la nappe et une diminution de l'eau disponible plus importantes que celles des pins. Elle lui permet également d'augmenter sa résistance à la sécheresse en mélange. L'effet positif du mélange sur la croissance des chênes n'est pas observé dans les densités faibles. Le pin ne présente pas cette interaction mélange - densité. La complémentarité partielle de l'acquisition de l'eau entre les deux essences en mélange diminue le stress des chênes sans influer sur celui des pins. Cela ne s'est pas traduit sur la Fd qui ne dépend pas de la composition. Néanmoins, le cumul des périodes de contrainte diminuait davantage la Fd des chênes que celle des pins. L'interaction des deux stratégies sylvicoles en contexte de sécheresse estivale ne semble bénéfique que pour le chêne.

In this study, we present the first tree-ring chronology for the tropical tree species Copaifera lucens and its climatic signal in southeastern Brazil.Tree-ring width series were compared with local climate indices using a drought index (Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index -SPEI), in monthly, bi-monthly and four-monthly scales. We also calculated negative pointer years over the time-span of the tree-ring width. The radial growth of C. lucens showed a positive correlation with the SPEI of the current summer and autumn in all the three analyzed time scales, while the negative pointer years matched with drier years. The species was highly sensitive to very low summer precipitation, which may lead to a 49% reduction in growth.We conclude that the long-living C. lucens has a great potential for dendrochronological studies as it shows a marked climatic signal. Our study also reinforces the importance of rainfall in regulating radial growth in tropical forests and sheds light on the local climate influence on tree growth in recent decades.

Highlights:• The climate-radial growth relationship of fir is studied along altitudinal gradients.• Summer drought of current and previous years is the main factor limiting fir growth.• Spring drought of the previous year is correlated with higher growth.• The climate-growth relationship varies among fir stands but not among trees.• The recent climate change has not altered the fir growth response to climate.Abstract:Tree ring widths provide very useful information to assess factors controlling tree radial growth and to estimate future growth trajectories under climate change. Radial growth variability has already been largely studied among tree populations that experience different environmental conditions and was most recently analyzed among individuals within populations. In the present study we assessed, over the 1960–2011 period, the growth response of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) individuals originating from ten populations located along two altitudinal gradients (1000–1600 m a.s.l.) in the south east of France. Tree ring increments were estimated from wood cores collected from 129 adult trees. Results showed that (i) 30% of the growth variance among individuals was explained by competition; (ii) the climates of both the current and previous years were correlated with growth. Most of the climatic variables affecting growth were consistent with those identified in previous studies and with the known physiology of the species: negative effects of summer drought of the current and past years as well as a positive effect of the spring temperature of the current year. However in our study, fir growth was also enhanced by previous year spring droughts. The growth responses to precipitation, temperature, and, relative humidity of the current and previous years varied between sites and/or altitudinal levels, reflecting population acclimation by plasticity or genetic adaptation to local conditions. By contrast, only summer rainfall induced variable responses between individual trees, result attributed to the edaphic micro local heterogeneity. The recent climate change did not significantly alter the fir growth response to climate.

Fertilization and liming are usual practices in agronomy but uncommon in forestry. Experimental liming or fertilization in forest were tested in the 1970’s. The initial aim of these experimentations was to determine if the addition of nutrients on poor or acidic forest soil could increase tree growth or even restore crown condition in case of decline. Physiological studies have established the implication of water availability in soil nutrients uptake and their transport in the sap and also via combined effects in various processes such as cell growth or stomatal control. Recently, extreme drought events responsible of many forest species diebacks have aroused the concern of forest managers. In addition, climate models predict an increase in the frequency and intensity of drought hazards in the future and forest management must be adapted to face them. In this context, and thanks to the current knowledge on the interactions between mineral and water alimentation, we investigate whether nutrient supply could mitigate the negative effects of water deficits by increasing the capacity 1/ to withstand droughts and 2/ to recover optimum growth after the drought induced crisis, i.e. to improve the resilience of trees. Conversely, would the vulnerability of trees to water deficits be increased? To answer this question, we investigated fertilization experiments located in three forests in France and applied on two species, sessile oak and Douglas fir. On each of these sites, selected trees were cored to the pith to determine the annual variations of radial growth from measurements of the tree-rings widths. These growth variations were used as a basis to the calculation of resistance, recovery and resilience indices to drought events, which were quantified using a soil water deficit index computed by the water balance model BILJOU©. On the site of Bercé, the water-use efficiency was estimated from the δ13C of the latewood. Retrospective analyses shown that the radial growth of oak trees in Bercé and Tronçais was significantly increased after the fertilization. Radial growth was then modelled from climate and soil water deficit. Douglas fir radial growth was slightly impacted by the nutrient supply in the Potées site. This analysis highlights the time-limited effect of this nutrient supply on the growth stimulation: no effect subsists more than 10 years after nutrient supply in Bercé and more than 20 years in Tronçais. Despite this transient effect on oak growth, no differences between treatments on the capacity of trees to resist and to recover after drought events was observed. The main factors influencing resistance and recovery of growth were the soil water deficit intensity and duration. These results corroborate δ13C analyzes in oak rings, which, again, were only significantly correlated with climate and were independent of treatment. The lack of modification of the resilience between the treatments, whatever the site and the species studied, is discussed. More broadly, the concept of resilience and its use in dendroecology are questioned, La fertilisation et les amendements sont des pratiques courantes en agronomie dont l’intérêt a été prospecté dans le domaine forestier. Des dispositifs expérimentaux de fertilisation ont été mis en place et étudiés par le passé. Le but de ces dispositifs était de déterminer si l’apport d’éléments nutritifs dans des milieux forestiers initialement pauvres ou acides pouvait augmenter la croissance voire restaurer l’état des cimes des arbres en situation de dépérissement. Par ailleurs, des études physiologiques ont montré l’implication de l’eau dans l’absorption des éléments nutritifs du sol et leur transport par la sève brute mais aussi via des effets combinés dans divers processus tels que la croissance cellulaire ou la régulation stomatique. Récemment, des épisodes de sécheresse extrême, responsables de vagues de dépérissement sur de nombreuses essences forestières, ont suscité l’inquiétude des gestionnaires. De plus, les modèles climatiques prédisent une augmentation de fréquence et d’intensité de l’aléa sécheresse dans un futur proche et la gestion forestière doit être adaptée pour y faire face. Dans ce contexte et grâce aux connaissances déjà acquises sur les interactions entre nutrition minérale et hydrique, nous cherchons à savoir si l’apport d’éléments nutritionnels pourrait atténuer les effets négatifs des déficits hydriques en agissant à la fois sur les capacités à supporter les sécheresses et à retrouver des niveaux de croissance optimale après l’aléa, c’est-à-dire améliorer la résilience des arbres. A l’inverse, la vulnérabilité des arbres aux déficits hydriques se trouverait-elle augmentée ? Pour répondre à cette problématique, nous avons exploité des dispositifs expérimentaux de fertilisation situés dans trois forêts en France sur deux essences forestières, le chêne sessile et le sapin de Douglas. Sur chacun de ces sites, des arbres sélectionnés ont été carottés à cœur afin de tracer les variations annuelles de croissance radiale à partir de mesures des largeurs de cernes. Ces courbes de croissance ont servi de base au calcul des indices de résistance, récupération et résilience de la croissance à des déficits hydriques du sol, calculés quant à eux à l'aide du modèle de bilan hydrique BILJOU©. Sur le site de Bercé, l’efficience d’utilisation de l’eau a de plus été appréhendée à partir du δ13C contenu dans le bois final des cernes. La croissance radiale des chênes de Bercé et de Tronçais a significativement été augmentée par la fertilisation et les variations interannuelles de croissance ont été modélisées par le climat et le déficit hydrique du sol. La croissance du sapin de Douglas quant à elle n’a que très peu été augmentée par l’apport en nutriments en forêt des Potées. Par ailleurs, cette analyse montre que la stimulation de croissance par la fertilisation est transitoire : moins de 10 ans après l’apport d’éléments nutritifs à Bercé et 20 ans à Tronçais, plus aucun effet sur la croissance ne subsiste. Malgré cet effet positif transitoire sur les croissances radiales du chêne, aucune différence entre les traitements sur les capacités des arbres à résister et récupérer après des épisodes de sécheresse. Les résistance et récupération de la croissance sont dépendantes de l’intensité et de la durée du déficit hydrique, donc de la sévérité de l’aléa et non de l’apport de nutriments. Ces résultats corroborent les analyses du δ13C dans les cernes des chênes qui, là encore, ne sont significativement corrélées qu’avec le climat et sont indépendantes du traitement. L’absence de modification de la résilience entre les traitements, quel que soit le site et l’essence étudiés, est discutée. Tree resilience to drought was higher in drier sites and lower for suppressed trees grown in higher density stands, highlighting the role of acclimation and selection in tree responses to drought. Ongoing climate change will drive more frequent drought events in the future, with potential impacts on tree community structure and functioning. Growth responses of tree communities may depend on their past water status and on competition pressure. We investigated the effects of site water status, population density, and tree social status on tree growth resistance and resilience following the severe drought of 1976 in even-aged stands of sessile oak (Quercus petraea). We used retrospective growth data collected in permanent plots experiencing contrasted climatic and stand density conditions. We used boosted regression trees to calibrate a tree growth model over 1960–1975, which was then used to provide a baseline of expected tree growth following 1976. Growth dynamics during and after 1976 was examined using the ratio between observed and expected growths over 1976–1983. Tree radial growth was on average 0.6 times its expected values in 1976 and was still 0.63 times its expected value in 1977. Despite experiencing higher summer soil water deficit in 1976, trees growing in drier sites exhibited remarkably faster growth recovery than those in moister sites. Suppressed trees grown in higher density stands recovered their normal growth rate slower than dominant trees. Forest growth is evidenced to be more vulnerable to drought in moister than in drier sites. Competitive pressures also alter tree capacity to recover from a severe drought, accelerating suppression of smaller trees in high-density stands. These results highlight the role of acclimation and selection processes in tree community responses to present and future climates.

Evaluate the efficiency of Populus alba clone Villafranca in the uptake and translocation of Zn from contaminated soils. The effects of 48 days of zinc treatment (Zn t ) on the growth and the photosynthetic activities of P. alba L. clone Villafranca were studied using ZnSO4 (375 ppm per unit of soil dry weight) added in sand and peat moss substrate at the beginning of the treatment (T 0) and again after 30 days (T 1) in order to reach a target Zn concentration of 375 ppm at T 0 and 750 ppm at T 1 per unit of soil dry weight. Zn uptake in the different organs was analyzed after 30 (T 1) and 48 days (T 2) from the beginning of treatment, showing the following order: root ≫ leaves ≥ woody cutting = stem. The leaf area increased by 12 % in comparison to control plants at the end of second treatment (48 days). Cutting radial growth showed a high synchronicity in the growth rate fluctuation among control and Zn t plants, but a higher increase in radial diameter of Zn t cutting was observed starting from day 38 (after 8 days of second Zn t ) reaching after 48 days 38 % higher than control plants. Although our data of leaf Zn concentration were in the range usually reported as toxic for plants, Villafranca clone in Zn t substrate were unaffected in terms of net CO2 assimilation and stomatal conductance to water vapor.

Context: In the Mediterranean area, numerous decline and mortality processes have been reported during recent decades, affecting forest dynamics. They are likely due to increases in summer drought severity and therefore especially affect drought-sensitive species, such as silver fir (Abies alba Mill.). [br/] [br/] Aims and methods: To understand the relationships between tree growth, crown condition and mortality probability, radial growth trends of healthy, declining (showing crown damages) and dead trees were compared using tree-ring analysis. Factors involved in determining this mortality were also examined at the plot and tree level using altitudinal gradients on three contrasted sites in southeastern France. [br/][br/] Results: Individuals with higher inter-annual variability in growth were more prone to dieback. At two sites, dead trees displayed lower growth rates over their entire lifetime, while, on the last site, their juvenile growth rate was higher. Trees with crown damage had higher growth rates than healthy trees on one site, and their radial growth trends over time always differed from those of dead trees.Mortality and crown damage were little related to altitude, but strongly differed between sites and among plots underlining the importance of local edaphic and topographic conditions.[br/] [br/] Conclusion: These results suggest that the relationships among mortality probability, crown condition and growth can differ among sites, and highlight the impact of soil conditions and the need to assess them in tree mortality studies.

The influence of climate on the radial growth of 63 mature stands (1879 trees) growing under different climatic and soil conditions was investigated using chronologies developped from the French Network RENECOFOR. The relationships between climate and ring widths were analyzed using extreme growth years and response functions analysis (1949-1994). The study was led on 15 beech stands (450 trees), 11 sessile oak stands (324), 4 pedunculate oak stands (119), 11 silver fir stands (328), 8 Norway spruce stands (239) and 14 Scots pine stands (419). Both approaches highlighted the major role of winter temperatures and water balance on radial growth. For Silver fir, Norway spruce and oaks, prior autumn weather conditions (through temperature and water balance) and winter temperatures (February and April) influence earlywood growth whereas summer water balance influences latewood enhancement. On the other hand, the growth of both ring components for beech and Scots pine depends mainly on current summer water balance. For all the studied species, the importance of the water balance increases with increasing local water stress : maximal soil water content (SWC) < 100 mm for beech, altitude < 800 and/or SfVC < 100 mm for Silver fir, oceanic climate with low annual precipitations (about 700 mm) for Scots pine and oaks., Les relations entre le climat et la croissance radiale de 63 peuplements (1879 arbres) du réseau RENECOFOR ont été étudiées à travers la réponse aux événements extrêmes (années caractéristiques) et à la variabilité normale du climat (fonctions de réponse) sur la période 1949-1994. L'étude a porté sur 15 hêtraies (450 arbres), 11 chênaies sessiliflores (324), 4 chênaies pédonculées (119), 11 sapinières (328), 8 pessières (239) et 14 pineraies sylvestres (419) réparties sur l'ensemble du territoire. Les deux approches se sont révélées complémentaires et ont montré l'importance des conditions thermiques hivernales et du bilan hydrique sur la croissance des arbres forestiers. Globalement, les conditions automnales de l'année précédente (à travers les températures ou le bilan hydrique) et les températures hivernales (essentiellement février et avril) modulent la croissance du bois initial et le bilan hydrique du début d'été (juin-juillet) celle du bois final. Le sapin, l'épicéa et les chênes sont les essences pour lesquelles la mise en place du bois initial dépend le plus fortement des conditions de l'automne précédent (à travers la température et le bilan hydrique) et des conditions thermiques hivernales. Pour ces espèces, la croissance du bois final est gouvernée essentiellement par le biln hydrique estival. En revanche, pour le hêtre et le pin sylvestre, la croissance du bois initial dépend essentiellement des conditions de sécheresse du début de saison de végétation. The objective of this paper is to understand if the observed differences in radial growth according to tree social status are due to differences in the duration of the growing period or in its intensity. In a 40-year-old silver fir plantation, located near Nancy in North-Eastern France, 3x5 trees were selected according to their diameter in order to represent 3 classes of social status -domi¬ nant, dominated and suppressed. In 2006, wood samples were collected weekly during the whole growing season on the stem of the selected trees. Histological sections were prepared in order to allow microscopic observations of cambium and xylem cells. From these observations, intra-annual wood formation timing and dynamics were assessed. Our results show that cambial activity started earlier for the dominant trees (end of April) than for the dominated and the suppressed (beginning of May and mid-May respectively) ; it stopped earlier for the suppressed (mid-August) than for the dominated and the dominants (end of September and mid-September respectively). So the dominants benefited from a much longer growing period than the dominated and the suppressed (5, 4 54 and 2 2A months respectively). Moreover, the dominants presented a much higher cell production rate than the dominated and the suppressed (0.50, 0.20 and 0.16 cell/day respectively). Cell production intensity explains over 70 % of the final ring cell number variation, while duration only explains 30% of it. Even if cell production intensity and duration act together, the processes behind their regulation are of different nature. Indeed, while cambium reactivation is influenced by tree height, it is crown area that determines cambial activity intensity., L'objectif de cet article est de comprendre si les différences de croissance radiale observées en fonction du statut social, sont dues à des différences dans la durée de la formation du bois ou dans son intensité. Dans une plantation de sapins pectinés d'une quarantaine d'années, située près de Nancy, 3x5 arbres ont été sélectionnés selon leurs diamètres afin de représenter 3 classes de statut social — dominant, dominé et surcimé. En 2006, des échantillons de bois ont été prélevés chaque semaine de la saison de végétation sur le tronc des arbres sélectionnés. Des coupes histologiques ont été réalisées afin de permettre l'observation au microscope des cellules du cambium et du xylème. A partir de ces observations, le calendrier et la dynamique intra-annuelle de formation du bois ont été estimés. Nos résultats montrent que l'activité cambiale a commencé en premier pour les arbres dominants (fin avril), qui ont été suivis des dominés, puis des surcimés (début mai et mi-mai respectivement) ; elle a cessé en premier pour les surcimés (mi-août), suivis des dominés, puis des dominants (mi-septembre et fin septembre respectivement). Ainsi les dominants ont bénéficié d'une période de croissance plus longue que les dominés et les surcimés (5, 4 'A et 2 % mois respectivement). De plus, les dominants présentaient un taux de production cellulaire plus élevé que les dominés et les surcimés (0,50, 0,20 et 0,16 cellules /jour, respectivement). L'intensité de la production cellulaire explique plus de 70 % de la variabilité du nombre final de cellules du cerne alors que la durée n 'en explique que 30 %. Bien que l'intensité et la durée de la production agissent de concert, leurs régulations sont de natures différentes. International audience; The relationships between climate and radial growth from 1967 to 2010 in nine Aleppo pine stands in the Ouarsenis range (north-western Algeria) were studied according to station-specific factors (substrate, altitude, exposure and age of the trees) using dendro-chronological methods, with an analysis of interannual variations in the thickness of growth rings. A retrospective analysis of radial growth showed high interannual variability in growth ring thickness within the same stand. The statistical parameters calculated showed highly variable radial growth between the different stands, which was related to station-specific factors and to tree age. Average growth ring thickness and persistence declined with the age of the trees. Average sensitivity to climate tended to be greater in trees growing on sandstone or schist substrates than on limestone. Our analysis of the relationships between climate and growth rings shows that the Aleppo pine is responsive to precipitation before or during the formation of growth rings. Higher temperatures, especially when they reach their maximum, have a negative effect on radial growth. The relationships between Aleppo pines and climatic conditions are modulated by station-specific factors, especially the substrate. The most responsive stands tend to be growing on a sandstone substrate. These results provide a useful description to help understand the ecological flexibility of the Aleppo pine and how it responds to climate change, with a view to proposing better ways of protecting pine forests that have been under threat for several decades.; Les relations entre le climat et la croissance radiale sur la période 1967-2010 de neuf populations de pin d’Alep dans le massif de l’Ouarsenis (Nord-Ouest de l’Algérie) ont été étudiées en fonction des facteurs stationnels (substrat, altitude, exposition et âge des arbres) à l’aide de méthodes de dendrochronologie. Les variations interannuelles des épaisseurs de cernes ont été analysées. L’étude rétrospective de la croissance radiale indique une forte variabilité interannuelle des épaisseurs des cernes à l’intérieur d’une même population. Les paramètres statistiques calculés indiquent une forte variabilité de la croissance radiale entre les populations, cette variabilité étant liée aux facteurs stationnels et à l’âge des arbres. L’âge joue un rôle négatif sur l’épaisseur moyenne des cernes et sur le phénomène de persistance. La sensitivité (sensibilité au climat) moyenne des arbres tend à être plus élevée sur les substrats gréseux ou schisteux que sur les substrats calcaires. L’analyse des relations cerne-climat montre que le pin d’Alep est réactif aux précipitations de la période précédant ou contemporaine de la formation du cerne. Les températures interviennent négativement sur la croissance radiale, surtout par leurs valeurs maximales. Les relations du pin d’Alep aux conditions climatiques sont modulées par les facteurs stationnels, notamment le substrat. Les populations les plus réactives se localisent davantage sur un substrat gréseux. Ces résultats constituent un descriptif utile pour comprendre la plasticité écologique du pin d’Alep et sa réponse aux changements climatiques, afin de proposer des mesures destinées à assurer une meilleure protection des pinèdes menacées depuis plusieurs décennies.

La diversité génétique est une composante essentielle de l'adaptation des êtres vivants a leur environnement. Pinus nigra Arnold, le pin noir d’Europe est un arbre forestier écologiquement et économiquement important. Ses forets couvrent plus de 3,5 millions d'hectares sur le revers nord de la Méditerranée. Le pin noir est un complexe taxonomique de 5 ou 6 sous espèces et du fait de sa distribution vaste et fragmentée, il est considéré comme génétiquement très variable et différentié. En premier lieu, une caractérisation de la niche climatique de l'espèce et des sous-espèces a été faite. Puis l'étude des relations cerne-climat de chaque sous-espèce a permis de comparer leur sensibilité au climat. Enfin, afin d'évaluer le niveau de variabilité intra-spécifique, mon étude s'est focalisée sur la croissance radiale des sous-espèces et provenances mesures dans six jardins communs (5 en France et 1 en Tunisie). Ceci a permis d'évaluer la variabilité génétique de la croissance radiale ainsi que sa plasticité en comparant la croissance des sous-espèces entre sites. Les modelés de niche climatique ont montré une vaste distribution potentielle au-delà des limites de la distribution observée. Les différences de distribution potentielle entre les sous-espèces ont révélé une occupation différenciée de la niche climatique. De plus, un fort effet de la sous-espèce et de la provenance a été trouvé pour la circonférence et plus modéré pour l'épaisseur de cerne moyenne. En outre, les relations cerne-climat entre sous-espèces varient peu au sein de chaque site. Ces résultats suggèrent que l'adaptation locale des sous-espèces proviendrait plutôt des variations d'allocation du carbone entre les différents compartiments de l'arbre que de variations de la réponse de la photosynthèse et de la croissance secondaire au climat. Enfin, les variations de croissance observées entre sous-espèces montrent la présence d'une plasticité phénotypique de la croissance radiale du pin noir., Genetic diversity is an essential component of the adaptation of living organisms to their environment. Pinus nigra Arnold, the European black pine, is an ecologically and economically important forest tree. Its forests cover more than 3.5 million hectares on the northern side of the Mediterranean. The black pine is a taxonomic complex of 5 or 6 subspecies and because of its large and fragmented distribution, is considered as very genetically variable and differentiated. First, a characterization of the climatic niche of the species and its subspecies was done. Then the study of the climate-growth relationship of the subspecies allowed a comparison of their sensitivity to climate. Finally, to asses the level of intra-specific variability, my study focused on the radial growth of the subspecies measured and provenances in six common gardens (5 in France and 1 in Tunisia). It allowed an evaluation of the genetic variability of the radial growth as well as its plasticity by comparing the growth of the subspecies between sites. The models of the climatic niche show a large potential distribution, beyond the limits of the observed distribution and differences between the potential distribution of the subspecies revealed a differentiated occupation of the climatic niche. A high effect of the subspecies and provenance was found for the circumference and a lower one for the mean ring width. Furthermore, inside each site, the climategrowth relationships vary little between subspecies. The results suggest that local adaptation of the subspecies would come from variations in carbon allocations between the different compartment of the tree instead of variations of the response of photosynthesis and secondary growth. Finally, the variation of growth performances of the subspecies, we can assume the existence of extensive phenotypic plasticity of radial growth in European black pine.

This thesis aims to assess the fate of marginal populations, in the context of climate change, for boreo-mountain tree species. The dendroclimatic response and the genetic structure of the species are jointly analyzed on gradients including both the continuous and the marginal distribution zones. Two biological models have been chosen for this research, white cedar at its northern limit (boreal forest) and stone pine at its western limit (temperate mountain forest). The following hypotheses were tested: global warming during the twentieth century has led to increased growth; growth variability is related to the genetic structure at the intra- and inter-population levels. A decline in cedar growth was observed after 1980 in marginal zone, which could be linked to drought constraints on growth. For both species, climate-growth relationships were essentially modulated by the amount of precipitation, but also by soil and tree-size variables. The existence of a significant link between genetic structure and some climatic variables still leaves some hope for a genetic adaptation potential, which magnitude will depend on the genetic diversity available for natural selection. The growth synchronicity between the trees was both influenced by the intra-population genetic diversity and the amount of precipitation. In conclusion, it is very difficult to disentangle the effects of climate and genetics on the growth of the studied trees., Cette thèse a pour objectif de déterminer le devenir des populations marginales d’arbres boréo-montagnards dans le contexte des changements climatiques. La réponse dendroclimatique et la structure génétique des espèces sont analysées conjointement sur des gradients incluant les zones de distributions continues et marginales. Les deux modèles biologiques choisis sont le thuya occidental en limite nordique (forêt boréale canadienne) et le pin cembro en limite occidentale (Alpes). Les hypothèses suivantes ont été testées : le réchauffement climatique au cours du XXe siècle a entrainé une augmentation de croissance ; la variabilité de croissance est reliée à la structure génétique aux niveaux intra- et inter-populationnels. Une baisse de croissance du thuya a été observée après 1980 en zone marginale, qui serait liée à une limitation par la sécheresse. Pour les deux espèces, les relations climat-croissance étaient essentiellement modulées par le volume des précipitations, mais également par des variables édaphiques et par la taille des arbres. L’existence d’un lien significatif entre la structure génétique et certaines variables climatiques laisse néanmoins espérer un potentiel d'adaptation génétique, dont l’ampleur dépendra de la diversité génétique disponible pour la sélection naturelle. Par ailleurs, le synchronisme de croissance entre les arbres était à la fois influencé par la diversité génétique intra-populationnelle et par le volume des précipitations. En conclusion, il apparaît très difficile de distinguer les effets du climat et de la génétique sur la croissance des arbres étudiés.

The branch autonomy principle, which states that the growth of individual branches can be predicted from their morphology and position in the forest canopy irrespective of the characteristics of the tree, has been used to simplify models of branch growth in trees. However, observed changes in allocation priority within trees towards branches growing in light-favoured conditions, referred to as ‘Milton’s Law of resource availability and allocation’, have raised questions about the applicability of the branch autonomy principle. We present models linking knot ontogeny to the secondary growth of the main stem in black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.), which were used to assess the patterns of assimilate allocation over time, both within and between trees. Data describing the annual radial growth of 445 stem rings and the three-dimensional shape of 5377 knots were extracted from optical scans and X-ray computed tomography images taken along the stems of 10 trees. Total knot to stem area increment ratios (KSR) were calculated for each year of growth, and statistical models were developed to describe the annual development of knot diameter and curvature as a function of stem radial increment, total tree height, stem diameter, and the position of knots along an annual growth unit. KSR varied as a function of tree age and of the height to diameter ratio of the stem, a variable indicative of the competitive status of the tree. Simulations of the development of an individual knot showed that an increase in the stem radial growth rate was associated with an increase in the initial growth of the knot, but also with a shorter lifespan. Our results provide support for ‘Milton’s Law’, since they indicate that allocation priority is given to locations where the potential return is the highest. The developed models provided realistic simulations of knot morphology within trees, which could be integrated into a functional-structural model of tree growth and above-ground resource partitioning.

International audience; Abstract Key message With a retrospective growth analysis over 20 years, we showed that silviculture (in particular thinning) ofCedrus atlantica(Manetti) could to some extent mitigate the effects of drought episodes. Severe reductions of density resulted in faster recovery of radial growth after severe drought episodes. Context Climate change is expected to increase the frequency and the intensity of drought in southern Europe. Silviculture could help in mitigating the effects of water deficit on forests. Aim The aim of this study is to assess the effect of thinning intensity on the climate-growth relationship of different crown classes in Cedrus atlantica (Manetti). Material and methods A 20-year annual survey was conducted on plots managed under contrasted thinning regimes in a site of the southern French Alps. Using a linear mixed modeling approach, we evaluated the modulation of the growth response to annual climate by thinning (climate × thinning interaction effect) during the experiment. The effect of thinning on the growth sensitivity to annual climate and the effect of thinning on the growth response to pointer years were also quantified. Results The highest intensity of thinning significantly changed the climate-growth relationship of the two most dominant crown classes. Heavy thinning reduced the impact of negative pointer years during a period of 4–5 years and improved the post-drought recovery for a decade. Heavily thinned plots and dominant crown classes had significantly higher relative growth sensitivities to annual climate over the studied period. Conclusions Forest management has the potential to reduce the effect of water deficit on the growth of Atlas cedar stands. We provide keystones for future silvicultural guidelines, in the context of a larger introduction of C. atlantica in the French territory.

International audience; The radial growth of mature cork oaks (Quercus suber L.) was studied during a 9-year production cycle using monthly dendrometer measurements and cork ring widths. The mean tree radial increase was 5.1 mm yr$^{-1}$ and the cork increment accounting for 3.8 mm yr$^{-1}$. The radial growth curves for cork, wood and stem were very similar, showing a decreasing trend along the production cycle. Cork increment was always the largest fraction of tree growth (on average 74%) and showed less inter-annual variations as compared to wood. Tree radial growth presented a clear within-the-year seasonal pattern, extending from March to October, with a maximum in June-July. The overall pattern of monthly growth distribution was similar among the years of the production cycle, but some inter-annual variations occurred with 1-2 month shifts or monthly growth rate decreases, related to climatic factors. Early spring growth was enhanced by winter rain, autumn growth by high summer rain and June increments by high temperatures during this month.; Influence du climat sur la variabilité saisonnière de la croissance radiale du chêne-liège au cours d'un cycle de production de liège. La croissance radiale de chênes-liège (Quercus suber L.) adultes en pleine production a été suivie pendant un cycle de production de 9 ans par des mesures mensuelles de dendromètres et par la mesure des cernes du liège. L'accroissement annuel des arbres a été de 5,1 mm an$^{-1}$, dont 3,8 mm an$^{-1}$ de liège. Les courbes de croissance du liège, du bois et de la tige ont montré une même tendance à la diminution de la croissance au cours du cycle. Le liège, qui correspond à la fraction majeure de l'accroissement de l'arbre (en moyenne 74 %), a montré une variation interannuelle de croissance moindre que le bois. La croissance soumise à une variation saisonnière marquée, s'étend de mars à octobre, avec un maximum en juin-juillet. La distribution de la croissance a été similaire toutes les années, parfois avec des déphasages de 1 à 2 mois ou avec une diminution de l'accroissement résultant de variations interannuelles de précipitation ou de température. La croissance au début du printemps a été favorisée par les pluies d'hiver, la croissance en automne par les pluies d'été et les accroissements en juin par une température moyenne plus élevée pendant ce mois.

Poland continues to be afforested its poorest agricultural land, even if the soil conditions are deemed worse than those of forest plantations. Thus, does the previous land-use (i.e. agriculture versus forest) modifies xylogenesis and sensitivity to climate? Investigations were conducted in Polish lowland, on 40 Scots pines from 65 to 101 years old. Ring-width series of double radii were created based on measurement of annual rings using WinDENDRO. Dendrochronology technics (i.e. crossdating and double standardization) allowed obtain a master chronology, which was confronted with climate data through correlation functions and an analysis of pointer years. These results showed that a mild winter and additionally a cool and wet autumn were the main factor for a large Scots pine ring. Comparative analysis highlighted that pines from former farmland (i) grown more slowly (-16%) than pines grown under forest typical conditions and (ii) showed increased sensitivity to climatic factors, both in normal years and in extreme conditions. A contrario, pines from former farmland from 5 to 35 years-old, experienced a higher latewood proportion, for a core of juvenile wood of only 6 cm on average.; La Pologne continue de boiser ses terres agricoles les plus pauvres ; même si les conditions pédologiques y sont réputées plus défavorables que celles des reboisements forestiers. L’étude porta sur 40 pins sylvestres de la plaine polonaise, âgés de 65 à 101 ans. La mesure à l’aide de WinDENDRO des largeurs de cerne permit la construction d’une série de croissance par arbre. Les techniques de dendrochronologie (i.e. interdatation et double standardisation) permirent d’obtenir une chronologie maîtresse qui fut confrontée aux données climatiques par le biais de fonctions de corrélation et d’une analyse des pointer years. Ces résultats montrèrent qu’un automne frais et humide et surtout des températures hivernales douces constituaient le principal facteur d'un cerne large pour le pin sylvestre de Mazovie. L’analyse comparée mit en évidence qu’un pin de sol agricole poussait moins vite qu’un pin forestier (-16 %), et présentait une sensibilité accrue aux facteurs climatiques, tant en années normales que lors de conditions extrêmes. A contrario, il bénéficiait, entre l'âge de 5 et 35 ans, d'une proportion de bois final plus importante, pour un noyau central de bois juvénile de seulement 6 cm en moyenne.

* Context[br/] Since the 2003 drought and heat wave, there have been many reports of Douglas-fir decline and dieback in France. Given the climate change that is predicted, more frequent drought episodes could induce recurrent decline processes. The nature and background of this threat requires a careful assessment.[br/] * Aims[br/] The objectives of this study were: (1) to test the hypothesis that the major climate hazard that accounts for the decline in Douglas-fir growth is drought, and (2) to identify the main vulnerability factors involved.[br/] * Methods[br/] Decline and recovery of radial growth were quantified of Douglas-fir in two particularly affected regions with a dendroecological approach; 899 trees were sampled on 58 plots. Mean climate data, ecological and dendrometric stand characteristics were tested in order to identify potential vulnerability factors[br/] * Results[br/] A clear relationship was evidenced between growth and soil water deficit. A severe decline of radial growth was induced by the 2003 drought and was maintained during subsequent years due to recurrent drought episodes. Growth recovery at the stand level was enhanced by soil nutrient fertility.[br/] * Conclusion[br/] Radial growth of Douglas-fir is clearly driven by the intensity of drought. In a context of climate change, an adaptive silvicultural strategy is required in order to cope with more frequent drought events. To mitigate the frequency and the intensity of water shortage episodes, site selection must take into account not only local climate characteristic but also soil properties like maximum extractable water content. Soil nitrogen fertility was found to play a key role for an efficient recovery of radial growth after drought episodes and thus must be preserved.

International audience; Picea sitchensis is an ecological and economical component of North America north temperate rain forest. In Haida Gwaii which is one of the most productive forest land of British Columbia archipelago (Canada), it is an important and a valuable commercial species. The present study aims at precising deer browsing consequences on growth regeneration of Picea sitchensis. Using ring-width series, an empirical model is built which describes browsing impact on radial growth and removal of these pressure. Taking into account deer pressure and browsing upper limit when building predictive height growth models proves valuable for comparing growth pattern of different species under browsing pressure and deducing changes in forest dynamics.; Influence de l'arrêt de l'abroutissement sur la croissance radiale de Picea sitchensis.Picea sitchensis est un composant majeur tant au niveau écologique qu'au niveau économique des forêts pluviales et tempérées de l'Amérique du Nord. Sur l'archipel Haida Gwaii, qui est recouvert par une forêt des plus productive de Colombie Britannique (Canada), c'est une essence à forte valeur commerciale. La présente étude vise à préciser les conséquences de l'abroutissement par le cerf à queue noire sur la croissance des individus au cours de la régénération. Sur la base de séries d'épaisseurs de cernes, un modèle empirique de croissance radiale est construit. Il décrit l'effet de l'abroutissement et de la suppression de celui-ci lorsque les individus parviennent à dépasser la limite supérieure d'abroutissement. La prise en compte de l'impact du cerf sur la croissance radiale et de la limite supérieure d'abroutissement dans l'élaboration des modèles prédictifs de croissance en hauteur s'avère intéressante pour comparer les modèles de croissance de différentes espèces abrouties et en déduire des conséquences sur la dynamique forestière.

Forest ecosystems’ resistance and resilience during drought events are questioned as drought events increase in frequency. Our study aimed to assess whether mixing species and intra-specific stratification alter individuals’ resilience to drought. The study of ring widths allowed the definition of resilience indexes to six drought events between 1970 and 2013. The sample consisted of 108 individuals of sessile oak Quercus petraea (Matt.) and Scots pine Pinus sylvestris L. in pure and mixed stands from three size classes (three social status: dominant, co-dominant and dominated) sampled in 2012 and 2013 in the Orleans forest, France . Our results show that the two species respond differently to different types of drought in connection with physiological differences. We demonstrate that the species mixture has no effect on resilience or resistance. The differing responses of individuals from different social status appear to be related to age effects in oak. Dominated pines display a higher resilience than pines of higher status. These composition and status factors as well as soil and climatic conditions for each drought events need to be taken into account to achieve a better understanding of the diversity of response to climatic variations among forest ecosystems.; Les capacités de résistance et résilience des écosystèmes forestiers lors des évènements de sécheresse sont remises en question alors que les périodes de sécheresse augmentent en fréquence. Notre étude visait à estimer si le mélange d’essences et la hiérarchisation intra-spécifique modifiaient la résistance et la résilience des individus aux sécheresses. L’étude des largeurs de cernes nous a permis de définir des indices de résistance et résilience pour six années de sécheresses sur la période 1970-2013. L’échantillon était constitué de 108 individus de trois classes de taille (trois statuts sociaux : dominant, co-dominant et dominé) de chêne sessile Quercus petraea (Matt.) et de pin sylvestre Pinus sylvestris L. en peuplements purs et mélangés échantillonnés en 2012 et 2013 en forêt d’Orléans. Nos résultats montrent que les deux essences répondent de manière différente aux différents types de sécheresses étudiées en lien avec des différences physiologiques. Notre étude ne montre pas d’effet du mélange d’essences sur la résistance et résilience des individus. En revanche le statut social a un effet sur ces indices. Chez le chêne, les variations de réponse des individus selon leur statut social semblent liées à des effets d’âge. Les pins de statut dominé ont une meilleure résilience que les pins de statut supérieur. Ces facteurs composition et statut ainsi que les conditions pédoclimatiques de chaque sécheresse sont à prendre en compte afin de mieux comprendre la diversité de réponse aux aléas climatiques des écosystèmes forestiers.
