Abstract

We use analytic continuation to extend the gauge/gravity duality nonperturbative description of the strong force coupling into the transition, near-perturbative, regime where perturbative effects become important. By excluding the unphysical region in coupling space from the flow of singularities in the complex plane, we derive a specific relation between the scales relevant at large and short distances; this relation is uniquely fixed by requiring maximal analyticity. The unified effective coupling model gives an accurate description of the data in the nonperturbative and the near-perturbative regions., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Phosphorene and its components are highly reactive to oxygen when exposed to ambient conditions due to the presence of lone pairs of electrons on phosphorus atoms. Functionalization serves as a solution to prevent the chemical degradation of these materials. In this paper, we investigate the impact of relatively strong covalent or noncovalent functionalization on phosphorene (monolayer black phosphorus (BP)), few-layer BP, and bulk BP. We use an effective tight-binding Hamiltonian that corresponds to one orbital per site, wherein covalent functionalization is simulated by atomic vacancies, and noncovalent functionalization is simulated by Anderson disorder. We demonstrate that these two types of functionalization act differently on the electronic structure and quantum diffusion, particularly affecting the gap and mobility characteristics, especially with a high degree of functionalization. However, we also show that the mobility gap is not significantly modified by the two types of defect. 3. Color symmetry and confinement as an underlying superconformal structure in holographic QCD

Abstract

Dedicated to the memory of our colleague, Harald Fritzsch, who, together with Murray Gell-Mann, introduced the color quantum number as the exact symmetry responsible for the strong interaction, thus establishing quantum chromodynamics (QCD) as a fundamental non-Abelian gauge theory. A basic understanding of hadron properties, however, such as confinement and the emergence of a mass scale, from first principles QCD has remained elusive: Hadronic characteristics are not explicit properties of the QCD Lagrangian and perturbative QCD, so successful in the large transverse momentum domain, is not applicable at large distances. In this article, we shall examine how this daunting obstacle is overcome in holographic QCD with the introduction of a superconformal symmetry in anti de Sitter (AdS) space which is responsible for confinement and the introduction of a mass scale within the superconformal group. When mapped to light-front coordinates in physical spacetime, this approach incorporates supersymmetric relations between the Regge trajectories of meson, baryon and tetraquark states which can be visualized in terms of specific $SU(3)_C$ color representations of quarks. We will also briefly discuss here the implications of holographic models for QCD color transparency in view of the present experimental interest. 4. Entropy from entangled parton states and high-energy scattering behavior

Abstract

The relation between the gluon density in a hadron and entanglement entropy can shed a new light on the high energy scattering behavior of hadrons. Using the holographic light-front QCD framework the growth above the classical geometric cross section is directly related to the increase of the internal quantum entropy from the entangled parton distribution in hadrons. A rather consistent picture emerges from the scale dependence of the Pomeron from the QCD evolution of the gluon distribution function $g(x, \mu)$, the rising of the integrated cross section in photoproduction of vector mesons, the deep inelastic scattering (DIS) experiments at HERA, hadron multiplicity and quantum entropy. Abstract

It is now well established theoretically and experimentally that a moir\'e pattern, due to a rotation of two atomic layers with respect to each other, creates low-energy flat bands. First discovered in twisted bilayer graphene, these new electronic states are at the origin of strong electronic correlations and even of unconventional superconductivity. Twisted bilayers (tb) of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) also exhibit flat bands around their semiconductor gap at small rotation angles. In this paper, we present a DFT study to analyze the effect of the atomic relaxation on the low-energy bands of tb-MoS2 with a rotation angle of 5.09 degrees. We show that in-plane atomic relaxation is not essential here, while out-of-plane relaxation dominates the electronic structure. 7. Emergent phenomena in QCD: The holographic perspective

Abstract

A basic understanding of the relevant features of hadron properties from first principles QCD has remained elusive, and should be understood as emergent phenomena which depend critically on the number of dimensions of physical spacetime. These properties include the mechanism of color confinement, the origin of the hadron mass scale, chiral symmetry breaking and the pattern of hadronic bound states. Some of these complex issues have been recently addressed in an effective computational framework of hadron structure based on a semiclassical approximation to light-front QCD, and its holographic embedding in anti-de Sitter (AdS) space. This framework also embodies an underlying superconformal algebraic structure which gives rise to the emergence of a mass scale within the superconformal group: It determines the effective confinement potential of mesons, baryons and tetraquarks. The normalizable zero-mass ground state is identified with the pion which has no baryonic supersymmetric partner, a property which is shared for the lowest meson state in each particle family. This new approach to hadron physics leads to relativistic wave equations, similar in their simplicity to the Schroedinger equation in atomic physics, and provides important insights into the confinement mechanism of QCD., Comment: Invited contribution to the 25th Workshop, "What Comes Beyond the Standard Models", Bled, Slovenia, July 4-10, 2022. 22 pages, 5 figures

This paper presents a comprehensive review of both the theory and experimental successes of Quantum Chromodynamics, starting with its emergence as a well defined theory in 1972-73 and following developments and results up to the present day. Topics include a review of the earliest theoretical and experimental foundations; the fundamental constants of QCD; an introductory discussion of lattice QCD, the only known method for obtaining exact predictions from QCD; methods for approximating QCD, with special focus on effective field theories; QCD under extreme conditions; measurements and predictions of meson and baryon states; a special discussion of the structure of the nucleon; techniques for study of QCD at high energy, including treatment of jets and showers; measurements at colliders; weak decays and quark mixing; and a section on the future, which discusses new experimental facilities or upgrades currently funded. The paper is intended to provide a broad background for Ph.D. students and postdocs starting their career. 10. Onset of color transparency in holographic light-front QCD

Abstract

The color transparency (CT) of a hadron, propagating with reduced absorption in a nucleus, is a fundamental property of QCD (quantum chromodynamics) reflecting its internal structure and effective size when it is produced at high transverse momentum, $Q$. CT has been confirmed in many experiments, such as semi-exclusive hard electroproduction, $e A \to e' \pi X$ for mesons produced at $Q^2 > 3 ~ {\rm GeV}^2$. However, a recent JLab (Jefferson Laboratory) measurement for a proton electroproduced in carbon $e\, {\rm C}\to e' p X$, where $X$ stands for the inclusive sum of all produced final states, fails to observe CT at $Q^2$ up to 14.2 GeV$^2$. In this paper, the onset of CT is determined by comparing the $Q^2$-dependence of the hadronic cross sections for the initial formation of a small color-singlet configuration using the generalized parton distributions from holographic light-front QCD. A critical dependence on the hadron's twist, $\tau$, the number of hadron constituents, is found for the onset of CT, with no significant effects from the nuclear medium. This effect can explain the absence of proton CT in the present kinematic range of the JLab experiment. The proton is predicted to have a "two-stage" color transparency with the onset of CT differing for the spin-conserving (twist-3, $\tau=3$) Dirac form factor with a higher onset in $Q^2$ for the spin-flip Pauli (twist-4) form factor. In contrast, the neutron is predicted to have a "one-stage" color transparency with the onset at higher $Q^2$ because of the dominance of its Pauli form factor. 11. Towards a single scale-dependent Pomeron in holographic light-front QCD

Abstract

The Pomeron Regge trajectory underlies the dynamics dependence of hadronic total cross sections and diffractive reactions at high energies. The physics of the Pomeron is closely related to the gluon distribution function and the gluon gravitational form factor of the target hadron. In this article we examine the scale dependence of the nonperturbative gluon distribution in the nucleon and the pion which was derived in a previous article [Phys. Rev. D 104, 114005 (2021)] in the framework of holographic light-front QCD and the Veneziano model. We argue that the QCD evolution of the gluon distribution function $g(x,\mu)$ to large $\mu^2$ leads to a single scale-dependent Pomeron. The resulting Pomeron trajectory $\alpha_P(t, \mu)$ not only depends on the momentum transfer squared $t$, but also on the physical scale $\mu$ of the amplitude, such as the virtuality $Q^2$ of the interacting photon in inclusive diffractive electroproduction. This can explain not only the $Q^2$ evolution of the proton structure function $F_2(x,Q^2)$ at small $x$, but also the observed energy and $Q^2$ dependence of high energy diffractive processes involving virtual photons up to LHC energies., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

The holographic light-front QCD framework provides a unified nonperturbative description of the hadron mass spectrum, form factors and quark distributions. In this article we extend holographic QCD in order to describe the gluonic distribution in both the proton and pion from the coupling of the metric fluctuations induced by the spin-two Pomeron with the energy momentum tensor in anti--de Sitter space, together with constraints imposed by the Veneziano model{\color{blue},} without additional free parameters. Abstract

Monitoring electronic properties of 2D materials is an essential step to open a way for applications such as electronic devices and sensors. From this perspective, Bernal bilayer graphene (BLG) is a fairly simple system that offers great possibilities for tuning electronic gap and charge carriers' mobility by selective functionalization (adsorptions of atoms or molecules). Here, we present a detailed numerical study of BLG electronic properties when two types of adsorption site are present simultaneously. We focus on realistic cases that could be realized experimentally with adsorbate concentration c varying from 0.25% to 5%. For a given value of c, when the electronic doping is lower than c we show that quantum effects, which are ignored in usual semi-classical calculations, strongly affect the electronic structure and the transport properties. A wide range of behaviors is indeed found, such as gap opening, metallic behavior or abnormal conductivity, which depend on the adsorbate positions, the c value, the doping, and eventually the coupling between midgap states which can create a midgap band. These behaviors are understood by simple arguments based on the fact that BLG lattice is bipartite. We also analyze the conductivity at low temperature, where multiple scattering effects cannot be ignored. Moreover, when the Fermi energy lies in the band of midgap states, the average velocity of charge carriers cancels but conduction is still possible thanks to quantum fluctuations of the velocity., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures

21. Magnetism of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

Abstract

We investigate magnetic instabilities in charge-neutral twisted bilayer graphene close to so-called "magic angles" using a combination of real-space Hartree-Fock and dynamical mean-field theories. In view of the large size of the unit cell close to magic angles, we examine a previously proposed rescaling that permits to mimic the same underlying flat minibands at larger twist angles. We find that localized magnetic states emerge for values of the Coulomb interaction $U$ that are significantly smaller than what would be required to render an isolated layer antiferromagnetic. However, this effect is overestimated in the rescaled system, hinting at a complex interplay of flatness of the minibands close to the Fermi level and the spatial extent of the corresponding localized states. The breaking of chiral symmetry in holographic light-front QCD is encoded in its longitudinal dynamics with its chiral limit protected by the superconformal algebraic structure which governs its transverse dynamics. The scale in the longitudinal light-front Hamiltonian determines the confinement strength in this direction: It is also responsible for most of the light meson ground state mass consistent with the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner constraint. Abstract

Moir\'e patterns are known to confine electronic states in transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers, thus generalizing the notion of magic angles discovered in twisted bilayer graphene to semiconductors. Here, we present a revised Slater-Koster tight-binding model that facilitates the first reliable and systematic studies of such states in twisted bilayer MoS$_2$ for the whole range of rotation angles $\theta$. We show that isolated bands appear at low energy for $\theta \lesssim 5 - 6^\circ$. Moreover, these bands become "flatbands", characterized by a vanishing average velocity, for the smallest angles $\theta \lesssim 2^\circ$., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

Hidden-color configurations are a key prediction of QCD with important physical consequences. In this work we examine a QCD color-singlet configuration in nuclei formed by combining six scalar $[u d]$ diquarks in a strongly bound $\rm SU(3)_C$ channel. The resulting hexadiquark state is a charge-2, spin-0, baryon number-4, isospin-0, color-singlet state. It contributes to alpha clustering in light nuclei and to the additional binding energy not saturated by ordinary nuclear forces in \he as well as the alpha-nuclei sequence of interest for nuclear astrophysics. We show that the strongly bound combination of six scalar isospin-0 $[ud]$ diquarks within the nuclear wave function - relative to free nucleons - provides a natural explanation of the EMC effect measured by the CLAS collaboration's comparison of nuclear parton distribution function ratios for a large range of nuclei. These experiments confirmed that the EMC effect; i.e., the distortion of quark distributions within nuclei, is dominantly identified with the dynamics of neutron-proton (``isophobic'') short-range correlations within the nuclear wave function rather than proton-proton or neutron-neutron correlations., Comment: 9 pages. Abstract

We give an overview of recent progress into the infrared structure of QCD based on the gauge/gravity correspondence and light-front quantization, where the color confining interaction for mesons and baryons is determined by an underlying superconformal algebraic structure. This new approach to hadron physics gives remarkable connections and predictions across the entire mass spectrum of hadrons and also describes the infrared behavior of the strong coupling. More recently, an extensive study of form factors, polarized and unpolarized parton distributions and the sea quark contribution to the nucleon has been carried out by extending the holographic formalism to incorporate the nonperturbative structure of Veneziano amplitudes. Abstract

We investigate the spin-dependent thermoelectric effect of graphene flakes with magnetic edges in the ballistic regime. Employing static, respectively, dynamic mean-field theory we first show that magnetism appears at the zigzag edges for a window of Coulomb interactions that increases significantly with increasing flake size. We then use the Landauer formalism in the framework of the non-equilibrium Green's function method to calculate the spin and charge currents in magnetic hexagonal graphene flakes by varying the temperature of the junction for different flake sizes. While in non-magnetic gated graphene the temperature gradient drives a charge current, we observe a significant spin current for hexagonal graphene flakes with magnetic zigzag edges. Specifically, we show that in the "meta" configuration of a hexagonal flake subject to weak Coulomb interactions, a pure spin current can be driven just by a temperature gradient in a temperature range that is promising for device applications. Bigger flakes are found to yield a bigger window of Coulomb interactions where such spin currents are induced by the magnetic zigzag edges, and larger values of the current., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures; published version with expanded discussion of edge magnetism (section III A) and some other smaller changes

Abstract

We present the first lattice QCD calculation of the charm quark contribution to the nucleon electromagnetic form factors $G^c_{E,M}(Q^2)$ in the momentum transfer range $0\leq Q^2 \leq 1.4$ $\rm GeV^2$. The quark mass dependence, finite lattice spacing and volume corrections are taken into account simultaneously based on the calculation on three gauge ensembles including one at the physical pion mass. The nonzero value of the charm magnetic moment $\mu^c_M=-0.00127(38)_{\rm stat}(5)_{\rm sys}$, as well as the Pauli form factor, reflects a nontrivial role of the charm sea in the nucleon spin structure. The nonzero $G^c_{E}(Q^2)$ indicates the existence of a nonvanishing asymmetric charm-anticharm sea in the nucleon. Performing a nonperturbative analysis based on holographic QCD and the generalized Veneziano model, we study the constraints on the $[c(x)-\bar{c}(x)]$ distribution from the lattice QCD results presented here. Our results provide complementary information and motivation for more detailed studies of physical observables that are sensitive to intrinsic charm and for future global analyses of parton distributions including asymmetric charm-anticharm distribution., Comment: Published version, Physics Letters B

31. Diffractive Dissociation of Alpha Particles as a Test of Isophobic Short-Range Correlations inside Nuclei

Abstract

The CLAS collaboration at Jefferson Laboratory has compared nuclear parton distributions for a range of nuclear targets and found that the EMC effect measured in deep inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering has a strongly "isophobic" nature. This surprising observation suggests short-range correlations between neighboring $n$ and $p$ nucleons in nuclear wavefunctions that are much stronger compared to $p-p$ or $n-n$ correlations. In this paper we propose a definitive experimental test of the nucleon-nucleon explanation of the isophobic nature of the EMC effect: the diffractive dissociation on a nuclear target $A$ of high energy $\rm ^4He$ nuclei to pairs of nucleons $n$ and $p$ with high relative transverse momentum, $\alpha + A \to n + p + A' + X $. The comparison of $n-p$ events with $p-p$ and $n-n$ events directly tests the postulated breaking of isospin symmetry. The experiment also tests alternative QCD-level explanations for the isophobic EMC effect. Abstract

We analyze the quantum transport properties of MAPbI3 within a tight-binding model. Charge carriers are strongly scattered by the Fr\"ohlich interaction with longitudinal optical phonon modes. This limits their mobilities at room temperature to the order of 200 cm$^2$/Vs. In the presence of additional extrinsic disorder the mobility decreases and a large fraction of the electronic states at band edges can be localized. These states would be insulating if the lattice were static, but their localization is broken by the dynamic disorder induced by the vibrations of the longitudinal optical modes. This process of electrons and holes diffusion, driven by the lattice dynamics, contributes to the unique electronic properties of this material., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

The detection of online cyberbullying has seen an increase in societal importance, popularity in research, and available open data. Nevertheless, while computational power and affordability of resources continue to increase, the access restrictions on high-quality data limit the applicability of state-of-the-art techniques. Consequently, much of the recent research uses small, heterogeneous datasets, without a thorough evaluation of applicability. In this paper, we further illustrate these issues, as we (i) evaluate many publicly available resources for this task and demonstrate difficulties with data collection. These predominantly yield small datasets that fail to capture the required complex social dynamics and impede direct comparison of progress. We (ii) conduct an extensive set of experiments that indicate a general lack of cross-domain generalization of classifiers trained on these sources, and openly provide this framework to replicate and extend our evaluation criteria. Finally, we (iii) present an effective crowdsourcing method: simulating real-life bullying scenarios in a lab setting generates plausible data that can be effectively used to enrich real data. This largely circumvents the restrictions on data that can be collected, and increases classifier performance. We believe these contributions can aid in improving the empirical practices of future research in the field.

Abstract

We propose a unified new approach to describe polarized and unpolarized quark distributions in the proton based on the gauge-gravity correspondence, light-front holography, and the generalized Veneziano model. We find that the spin-dependent quark distributions are uniquely determined in terms of the unpolarized distributions by chirality separation without the introduction of additional free parameters. The predictions are consistent with existing experimental data and agree with perturbative QCD constraints at large longitudinal momentum $x$. In particular, we predict the sign reversal of the polarized down-quark distribution in the proton at $x=0.8\pm0.03$, a key property of nucleon substructure which will be tested very soon in upcoming experiments., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, version to appear in Physical Review Letters

Abstract

Carbon nanotubes are of central importance for applications in nano-electronics thanks to their exceptional transport properties. They can be used as sensors, for example in biological applications, provided that they are functionalized to detect specific molecules. Due to their one-dimensional geometry the carbon nanotubes are very sensitive to the phenomenon of Anderson localization and it is therefore essential to know how the functionalization modifies their conduction properties and if they remain good conductors. Here we present a study of the quantum localization induced by functionalization in metallic single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) with circumferences up to $ 15\; nm $. We consider resonant and non-resonant adsorbates that represent two types of covalently functionalized groups with moderate and strong scattering properties. The present study provides a detailed analysis of the localization behaviour and shows that the localization length can decrease down to $ 20-50\; nm $ at concentrations of about 1 percent of adsorbates. On this basis we discuss the possible electronic transport mechanisms which can be either metallic like or insulating like with variable range hopping.

Abstract

This paper describes continuing work on semantic frame slot filling for a command and control task using a weakly-supervised approach. We investigate the advantages of using retraining techniques that take the output of a hierarchical hidden markov model as input to two inductive approaches: (1) discriminative sequence labelers based on conditional random fields and memory-based learning and (2) probabilistic context-free grammar induction. Experimental results show that this setup can significantly improve F-scores without the need for additional information sources. Furthermore, qualitative analysis shows that the weakly supervised technique is able to automatically induce an easily interpretable and syntactically appropriate grammar for the domain and task at hand.

Abstract

We present a framework for the induction of semantic frames from utterances in the context of an adaptive command-and-control interface. The system is trained on an individual user's utterances and the corresponding semantic frames representing controls. During training, no prior information on the alignment between utterance segments and frame slots and values is available. In addition, semantic frames in the training data can contain information that is not expressed in the utterances. To tackle this weakly supervised classification task, we propose a framework based on Hidden Markov Models (HMMs). Structural modifications, resulting in a hierarchical HMM, and an extension called expression sharing are introduced to minimize the amount of training time and effort required for the user. The dataset used for the present study is PATCOR, which contains commands uttered in the context of a vocally guided card game, Patience. Experiments were carried out on orthographic and phonetic transcriptions of commands, segmented on different levels of n-gram granularity. The experimental results show positive effects of all the studied system extensions, with some effect differences between the different input representations. Moreover, evaluation experiments on held-out data with the optimal system configuration show that the extended system is able to achieve high accuracies with relatively small amounts of training data.

44. The Isoscalar Mesons and Exotic States in Light Front Holographic QCD

Abstract

In this article a systematic quantitative analysis of the isoscalar bosonic states is performed in the framework of supersymmetric light front holographic QCD. It is shown that the spectroscopy of the $\eta$ and $h$ mesons can be well described if one additional mass parameter -- which corresponds to the hard breaking of chiral $U(1)$ symmetry in standard QCD -- is introduced. The mass difference of the $\eta$ and $\eta'$ isoscalar mesons is then determined by the strange quark mass content of the $\eta'$. The theory also predicts the existence of isoscalar tetraquarks which are bound states of diquarks and anti-diquarks. The candidates for these exotic isoscalar tetraquarks are identified. In particular, the $f_0(1500)$ is identified as isoscalar tetraquark; the predicted mass value 1.52 GeV agrees with the measured experimental value within the model uncertainties., Comment: 20 pages, 2 figures
