This work proposes three novel approaches to speed up the solution of the Security Constrained Unit Commitment problem: an improvement of an active-set iterative approach taken from literature, an approach using solver callback functions for the evaluation of system and security constraints in the branch-and-bound tree, and one based on a shrinking horizon decomposition integrated with the use of callback functions. The three approaches were tested over five different case studies and compared against an approach taken from literature to assess scalability and performance. Results show that the modified iterative approach is always faster than the original one reported in the literature (between −58% and −93% run time), while the callback-based method does not reduce the computational time of large-scale instances. Finally, the shrinking-horizon-based approach was proved to be the fastest (up to −98% less time) despite not guaranteeing optimality (about 1% suboptimal).

The paper presents an original methodology for the identification of intervention priorities through a tailored priority index IP in areas that are highly-exposed to port noise. The methodology is applied to a case study developed in the framework of the European project ANCHOR, acronym of Advanced Noise Control strategies in HarbOuR, funded as part of the announcement Life 2017.

Background: Osteoporosis and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are conditions associated with ageing and chronic inflammation; among MetS' components, visceral obesity has been correlated to low bone mineral density in postmenopausal women. However, data on an increased fracture risk in MetS are still contrasting. The trabecular bone score (TBS) is an indicator of bone quality and a potential predictive factor for fractures. We aim to explore the relationship between MetS components and TBS. Methods: we analyzed data from 3962 women in the 2005-2006 and 2007-2008 NHANES cohorts, for whom a valid TBS value was available. All analyses were adjusted for the principal risk factors of altered bone metabolism. Results: An inverse significant association was observed between TBS and most of the MetS variables investigated, with the strongest correlation found with waist circumference (WC) (P <0.001). WC represented the major predictor of degraded TBS (P <0.001), in adjusted models considering age, 25(OH)Vitamin D, smoke and insulin resistance. Increased WC was significantly associated with the presence of bone fractures at the logistic regression analysis (P = 0.001) in all study participants and in the subgroup of women ≤50 years old after adjustment for potential confounders (P = 0.006). Conclusion: This study, using a large sample of women, found a negative association of MetS on bone health, mainly driven by visceral obesity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper reports the main contents of the guidelines developed in the framework of the project ANCHOR, acronym of Advanced Noise Control strategies in HarbOuR, which is a European Project funded as part of the announcement Life 2017.

The aim of the paper is to define a method for evaluating infrastructural interventions for the mitigation of noise generated by roads based on multi-criteria analysis which considers a series of parameters (environmental, social, economic and health) that could give broader evaluations than just economic convenience.

An innovative technique based on beamforming is implemented, at the aim of detecting the distances from the observer and the relative positions among the noise sources themselves in multisource noise scenarios. By means of preliminary activities to assess the optical camera focal length and stereoscopic measurements followed by image processing, the geometric information in the source-microphone direction is retrieved, a parameter generally missed in classic beamforming applications. A corollary of the method consists of the possibility of obtaining also the distance among different noise sources which could be present in a multisource environment. A loss of precision is found when the effect of the high acoustic reflectivity ground interferes with the noise source.
