Abstract

The languages of mathematical physics and modelling are endowed with a rich "grammar of dimensions" that common abstractions of programming languages fail to represent. We propose a dependently typed domain-specific language (embedded in Idris) that captures this grammar. We apply it to explain basic notions of dimensional analysis and Buckingham's Pi theorem. Abstract

Researchers are often interested in understanding the relationship between a set of covariates and a set of response variables. To achieve this goal, the use of regression analysis, either linear or generalized linear models, is largely applied. However, such models only allow users to model one response variable at a time. Moreover, it is not possible to directly calculate from the regression model a correlation measure between the response variables. In this article, we employed the Multivariate Generalized Linear Mixed Models framework, which allows the specification of a set of response variables and calculates the correlation between them through a random effect structure that follows a multivariate normal distribution. We used the maximum likelihood estimation framework to estimate all model parameters using Laplace approximation to integrate out the random effects. The derivatives are provided by automatic differentiation. The outer maximization was made using a general-purpose algorithm such as \texttt{PORT} and \texttt{BFGS}. We delimited this problem by studying only count response variables with the following distributions: Poisson, negative binomial (NB) and COM-Poisson. The models were implemented on software \texttt{R} with package \texttt{TMB}. Besides the full specification, models with simpler structures in the covariance matrix were considered (fixed and common variance, fixed dispersion, $\rho$ set to 0). These models were applied to a dataset from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, where three underdispersed response variables were measured at 1281 subjects. The COM-Poisson model full specified overcome the other two competitors considering three goodness-of-fit indexes. Therefore, the proposed model can deal with multivariate count responses and measures the correlation between them taking into account the effects of the covariates., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, 4 tables

14. Dynamics and Stability of Non-Smooth Dynamical Systems with Two Switches

Abstract

One of the most common hypotheses on the theory of non-smooth dynamical systems is a regular surface as switching manifold, at which case there is at least well-defined and established Filippov dynamics. However, systems with singular switching manifolds still lack such well-established dynamics, although present in many relevant models of phenomena where multiple switches or multiple abrupt changes occur. At this work, we leverage a methodology that, through blow-ups and singular perturbation, allows the extension of Filippov dynamics to the singular case. Specifically, tridimensional systems whose switching manifold consists of an algebraic manifold with transversal self-intersection are considered. This configuration, known as double discontinuity, represents systems with two switches and whose singular part consists of a straight line, where ordinary Filippov dynamics is not directly applicable. For the general, non-linear case, beyond defining the so-called fundamental dynamics over the singular part, general theorems on its qualitative behavior are provided. For the affine case, however, theorems fully describing the fundamental dynamics are obtained. 15. Effects of additives on oil displacement in nanocapillaries: a mesoscale simulation study

Abstract

We performed mesoscale simulations in order to investigate the effects that additives, such as surfactants and polymers, have in the oil displacement process by water and brine injection. A Many-Body Dissipative Particle Dynamics (MDPD) model was parameterized in order to reproduce physical properties obtained either by experiments or Classical Molecular Dynamics (MD). The MDPD model was then employed to simulate the displacement of n-dodecane by water and brine, with surfactant concentrations ranging from 1 wt. % to 10 wt. % SDS and polymer concentration of 0.5 wt. % HPAM. We observed that while the additives may enter the capillary without clogging, specific combinations of surfactant concentrations and injection rates may lead to poor oil displacement. This result can be understood in terms of the balance between water-wall and (surface-mediated) water-oil interactions. As a consequence, our results show an effective reversal of the wettability character, from water-wet to oil-wet, as a function of the interface speed. We conclude by summarizing the implications such results have on the fluid-fluid displacements involving additives.

27. Affirmative Actions in Terms of Special Rights: Confronting Structural Violence in Brazilian Higher Education

Abstract

In this article, the authors interpret affirmative actions with reference to structural violence, which is accompanied by legitimizing discourses that tend to make discrimination appear natural and unquestionable. They illustrate the extension of structural violence in Brazilian society with particular reference to access to higher education. It has been common to talk about some groups of students as having special needs. However, the authors see groups of students suffering structural violence as being groups with special rights, and explore affirmative actions through the notion of special rights. The authors find that special-rights terminology establishes the discussion of affirmative actions in higher education in a broader and, at the same time, more profound conceptual framework related to interpretations of social justice. Simultaneously, special-rights terminology brings an educational specificity to the discussion of affirmative actions. Thus, the authors see affirmative actions as being both a general sociopolitical and specific educational challenge.

40. Restaurações pré-endodônticas: série de casos.

Abstract

Introdução: Dentes com necessidade de tratamento endodôntico geralmente possuem grandes perdas estruturais, as quais dificultam os procedimentos endodônticos, com risco de acidentes durante o tratamento, e tornam o remanescente dentário mais frágil ou suscetível a fraturas. Objetivo: Apresentar uma série de casos clínicos de restaurações pré-endodônticas para otimizar os procedimentos endodônticos e restauradores em dentes tratados endodonticamente. Métodos: Quatro casos clínicos serão utilizados para exemplificar abordagens restauradoras prévias ao tratamento endodôntico. Os casos apresentam, além do reforço coronário de dentes extensamente comprometidos, outros benefícios, como: facilitação no uso do isolamento absoluto, manutenção das soluções irrigadoras na câmara coronária, melhor selamento temporário entre sessões, estabelecimento de pontos de referência adequados, e simplificação na confecção da restauração final após o tratamento endodôntico. Conclusões: As restaurações pré-endodônticas podem ser consideradas um recurso valioso para o clínico antes do tratamento endodôntico, além de possuírem um papel fundamental na proteção do remanescente dentário. The article is a review of the book "Macroeconomia do Desenvolvimento: Uma Perspectiva Keynesiana" by José Luís da Costa Oreiro. The book explores the topic of development macroeconomics from a Keynesian perspective, focusing on the effects of macroeconomic policies on long-term growth and development. It discusses income differences between countries, Keynesian-inspired growth models, and applies development macroeconomics to the Brazilian economy. The author argues that uneven development is caused by technological asymmetries and differences in productive specialization between countries.
