Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an emergent threat due to the antimicrobial resistance crisis. Bacteriophages (phages) are promising agents for phage therapy approaches against P. aeruginosa. It has been proposed that metazoans harbor phages on their mucosal surfaces, and this could be exploited for the rational design of prophylactic phage therapy. The goal of this study was to evaluate the potential of phage-mucus interaction to prevent infections caused by P. aeruginosa. We isolated two phages capable of infecting P. aeruginosa. Both are similar in morphology and closely related genetically. However, phage VAC3 is more efficient in replicating in mucin-exposed P. aeruginosa in vitro and is preferentially held in the respiratory tract of C57BL/6 mice. Pre-treatment with VAC3 phage protects mice from a lethal dose of P. aeruginosa while VAC1 does not. Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient known to play an important role in the antioxidant system that can potentially influence tumor growth. We aimed to investigate the effects of dietary Se supplementation after detection of 4T1 mammary tumor growth in BALB/c mice. Thirty female mice received subcutaneous inoculation of 4T1 cells. After five days, all animals presenting palpable tumors were randomly assigned to three groups: a control group (Se-control) receiving a diet with adequate Se (0.15 mg/kg) and two other groups that received Se-supplemented diets (1.4 mg/kg of total Se) with either Brazilian nuts (Se-Nuts) or selenomethionine (SeMet). Data were assessed by either One or Two-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's HSD or Bonferroni's post hoc tests, respectively. Both Se-supplemented diets reduced tumor volume from the thirteenth day of feeding compared with the Se-adequate (control) diet (p < 0.05). The SeMet group presented a higher Se blood concentration (p < 0.05) than the Se-control group, with the Se-Nuts group presenting intermediate values. Selenoprotein P gene expression in the liver was higher in the Se-Nuts group than in the Se-control group (p < 0.05), while the SeMet group presented intermediate expression. Melanoma is an aggressive cancer with fast metastatic spread and reduced survival time. One common event during the neoplastic progression is the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), which enhances invasiveness, cell migration, and metastasis. In this study, we investigated the effects of metformin at EMT in melanoma cell lines B16-F10 and A-375, in vitro, and the impact of EMT downregulation on melanoma progression in vivo. The metformin cells treatment reduces the migration potential in vitro and reduced the development of pulmonary metastases and the expressions of N-cadherin, vimentin, ZEB1, and ZEB2 at the metastases site, in vivo. Ischemic stroke represents a major cause of adult death and severe neurological disability worldwide. Reperfusion following brain ischemia produces an inflammatory cascade that increases brain damage. In this context, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play an important role as pro-inflammatory mediators. The MMP 2 up-regulation seems to promote matrix degradation, blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption and facilitates the influx of peripheral inflammatory cells to the brain after stroke. However, there are not studies about MMP-1 in this condition. The aim of this study is to evaluate the association of brain damage, inflammatory response and the immunostaining profile of matrix metalloproteinases 1 and 2 after transient global cerebral ischemia. Mice were submitted to bilateral common carotid arterial occlusion (BCCAo) during 25 min. After three days of reperfusion, the neurological deficit score was evaluated and the animals were euthanized. Brain samples were collected in order to analyze the histopathological damage, MMPs 1 and 2 immunostaining and cytokines and chemokines levels. Ischemic group showed neurological deficits associated with brain lesions, characterized by necrotic core and penumbra zone three days after reperfusion. Higher brain immunostaining of MMP-1 and MMP-2 was observed in BCCAo samples than in sham samples. Ischemic group also exhibited increased brain levels of the cytokines tumoral necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukin 1β (IL-1β), chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 1 (CXCL1), and chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 5 (CCL5) in comparison to sham group. Our results suggest that the MMP-1 and MMP-2 raise, associated with the up-regulation of inflammatory mediators, contributes to brain damage and neurological deficits after global brain ischemia followed by three days of reperfusion in mice., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. Purpose: The purposes were to study the pharyngeal airway in patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion submitted to surgical orthodontic treatment and to correlate the alterations with bone movements., Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of multislice computed tomography images from 13 patients obtained before and 6 months after maxillomandibular advancement surgery. The following measurements were obtained using Dolphin Imaging software (Dolphin Imaging, Chatsworth, CA): volume and area of the oropharynx, nasopharynx, and total airway, as well as the most constricted area, anteroposterior and lateral dimensions of the narrowest axial cross-sectional area, and airway length. The paired t test was applied at a significance level of 5%., Results: Sagittal displacement of the maxilla and mandible was correlated with airway alterations using the Pearson correlation test. Alterations in airway measurements were observed in all patients after surgery. We noted a significant increase (P < .05) in total airway area, oropharyngeal area, and anteroposterior dimension of the most constricted area, as well as a significant reduction (P < .05) in airway length. A significant correlation (P < .05) was observed between nasopharyngeal area and maxillary movement and between airway length and mandibular movement (P < .05)., Conclusions: The results of this study suggest significant alterations in pharyngeal airway measurements when preoperative and postoperative periods of bimaxillary advancement surgery were compared., (Copyright © 2019 American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Background: Not all nosocomial outbreaks (NOs) are reported to health authorities (HAs)., Aim: To identify barriers to investigating and reporting NOs to HAs., Methods: A mixed methods approach was performed with a convergent parallel design. The quantitative and qualitative branches of the study were a statewide (electronic) survey and focus groups (FGs), respectively. Infection control practitioners (ICPs) working in the State of São Paulo, Brazil were recruited., Findings: Eighty-five ICPs were enrolled in the survey and 22 ICPs were enrolled in the FGs. Barriers to investigating and reporting NOs included: (i) difficulty in translating outbreak investigation knowledge into practice; (ii) weak planning in outbreak investigation process; (iii) organizational culture and context; (iv) lack of awareness about reporting; and (v) lack of autonomy of ICPs to report outbreaks to HAs., Conclusion: HAs could overcome these barriers by revising their strategies to work with healthcare services, as well as delivering translational educational programmes to support improvement in knowledge and skills for NO investigation., (Copyright © 2016 The Healthcare Infection Society. This in vitro study evaluated the effect of mechanical cycling on the torque of retaining screw in external hexagon implants with platform switching (PS), regular platform (RP) and wide platform (WP). A total of 30 specimens were equally divided into 3 groups: PS, PR and WP. Each specimen was prepared with implants: 3.75 x 10 mm for RP group and 5.0x10 mm for PS and WP groups and its respective abutment with 32 Ncm torque. All groups were subjected to 106 cycles with 100 N (corresponding to about 40 months of chewing). The results were obtained with the reverse torque of each specimen and data were evaluated using ANOVA and Tukey test (p<0.05). The PS group showed statistically significant difference in screw removal torque (30.06±5.42) compared with RP (23.75±2.76) and WP (21.32±3.53) (p<0.05) groups; the RP and WP groups showed no statistically significant difference between them. It was concluded that the PS group showed higher reverse torque value, suggesting lower susceptibility of the abutment screw loosening.

The genus Caesalpinia (Caesalpiniaceae) has more than 500 species, many of which have not yet been investigated for potential pharmacological activity. Several classes of chemical compounds, such as flavonoids, diterpenes, and steroids, have been isolated from various species of the genus Caesalpinia. It has been reported in the literature that these species exhibit a wide range of pharmacological properties, including antiulcer, anticancer, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antirheumatic activities that have proven to be efficacious in ethnomedicinal practices. In this review we present chemical and pharmacological data from recent phytochemical studies on various plants of the genus Caesalpinia.
