Abstract

This article discusses the population heterogeneity in Cryptococcus neoformans and its impact on pathogenesis. Cryptococcus neoformans is a prevalent global threat, especially for people living with HIV. The article explores the different ways in which the human-Cryptococcus interaction can progress, including latent/dormant cryptococcosis, pulmonary cryptococcosis, disseminated cryptococcosis, and cryptococcal relapse. The article also examines population heterogeneity in C. neoformans, which provides benefits to the pathogen in coping with changing conditions and contributes to its survival. The specific manifestations of population heterogeneity discussed in the article include heteroresistance, viable but nonculturable state, antifungal persistence, and biofilm formation. Abstract

We evaluate the exposure during nadir observations with JEM-EUSO, the Extreme Universe Space Observatory, on-board the Japanese Experiment Module of the International Space Station. Designed as a mission to explore the extreme energy Universe from space, JEM-EUSO will monitor the Earth's nighttime atmosphere to record the ultraviolet light from tracks generated by extensive air showers initiated by ultra-high energy cosmic rays. In the present work, we discuss the particularities of space-based observation and we compute the annual exposure in nadir observation. The results are based on studies of the expected trigger aperture and observational duty cycle, as well as, on the investigations of the effects of clouds and different types of background light. Abstract

The combination of forming with continuous cooling bainitic steels offers a new path for reaching energy-efficient manufacturing chains. Improved energy efficiency is achievable thanks to the suppression of conventional, energy-intensive heat treatments. In the present paper, different thermomechanical processing strategies, including laboratory and industrial scale forgings, were assessed alongside their impact on the resulting microstructure. Firstly, phase transformation kinetics were assessed in precisely controlled environments via dilatometry coupled to in situ techniques. Secondly, the microstructure, mechanical properties, and forgeability of large-scale forged components were investigated in laboratory and industrial conditions. These investigations were also assisted by finite element method simulation. The comparison between controlled and industrial-scale conditions illustrates pitfalls in the transfer of knowledge to conditions approaching a real manufacturing chain. Nevertheless, alloy and process design is shown to be a key aspect to overcome the discussed challenges, allowing homogeneous bainite microstructures and mechanical properties to be achievable over a flexible range of processing conditions.

Abstract

Las Jornadas de Robótica y Bioingeniería de 2023 tienen lugar en la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial de la Universidad Politécnica de IVIadrid, entre los días 14 y 16 de junio de 2023. En este evento propiciado por el Comité Español de Automática (CEA) tiene lugar la celebración conjunta de las XII Jornadas Nacionales de Robótica y el XIV Simposio CEA de Bioingeniería. Las Jornadas Nacionales de Robótica es un evento promovido por el Grupo Temático de Robótica (GTRob) de CEA para dar visibilidad y mostrar las actividades desarrolladas en el ámbito de la investigación y transferencia tecnológica en robótica. Asimismo, el propósito de Simposio de Bioingeniería, que cumple ahora su decimocuarta dicción, es el de proporcionar un espacio de encuentro entre investigadores, desabolladores, personal clínico, alumnos, industriales, profesionales en general e incluso usuarios que realicen su actividad en el ámbito de la bioingeniería. Estos eventos se han celebrado de forma conjunta en la anualidad 2023. Esto ha permitido aunar y congregar un elevado número de participantes tanto de la temática robótica como de bioingeniería (investigadores, profesores, desabolladores y profesionales en general), que ha posibilitado establecer puntos de encuentro, sinergias y colaboraciones entre ambos. El programa de las jornadas aúna comunicaciones científicas de los últimos resultados de investigación obtenidos, por los grupos a nivel español más representativos dentro de la temática de robótica y bioingeniería, así como mesas redondas y conferencias en las que se debatirán los temas de mayor interés en la actualidad. En relación con las comunicaciones científicas presentadas al evento, se ha recibido un total de 46 ponencias, lo que sin duda alguna refleja el alto interés de la comunidad científica en las Jornadas de Robótica y Bioingeniería. Estos trabajos serán expuestos y presentados a lo largo de un total de 10 sesiones, distribuidas durante los diferentes días de las Jornadas. Las temáticas de los trabajos cubren los principales retos científicos relacionados con la robótica y la bioingeniería: robótica aérea, submarina, terrestre, percepción del entorno, manipulación, robótica social, robótica médica, teleoperación, procesamiento de señales biológicos, neurorehabilitación etc. Confiamos, y estamos seguros de ello, que el desarrollo de las jornadas sea completamente productivo no solo para los participantes en las Jornadas que podrán establecer nuevos lazos y relaciones fructíferas entre los diferentes grupos, sino también aquellos investigadores que no hayan podido asistir. Este documento que integra y recoge todas las comunicaciones científicas permitirá un análisis más detallado de cada una de las mismas.

[spa] Se da a conocer la presencia de Gonipterus platensis (Marelli, 1926) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) en Mallorca (municipio de Alaró), así como de daños por defoliación en hojas de Eucalyptus globulus. Estas capturas representan el primer registro de la especie para las Islas Baleares, así como la confirmación de su presencia en el Mediterráneo occidental. Abstract

Aim of study: To survey and report the behavior of the weevil Pleurodirus fairmairii as a pest species on Cistus heterophyllus subsp. carthaginensis (Pau) M.B. Crespo & Mateo (Cartagena’s rockrose), in order to provide the first biological data on this species. Cartagena’s rockrose is an Ibero-Balearic endemism considered as "endangered" in the Spanish Catalogue of Threatened Species. Its current distribution is limited to the Spanish provinces of Murcia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands. Area of study: The study has been conducted in Valencia province (Spain). Material and methods: Pleurodirus fairmairii was observed in the field feeding voraciously on Cartagena’s rockrose. Damages were described, and several individuals of the weevil were captured alive for preliminary observation of their feeding habits under laboratory conditions. The trials (no-choice test) consisted of offering a freshly plucked leaf from different potential host plants to the weevils introduced individually in a Petri dish. Furthermore, a male and a female were dissected for the study of genitalia, and their respective components were prepared for microscopy study and subsequently described. Main results: This paper reports for the first time the occurrence of the weevil Pleurodirus fairmairii on plants of C. heterophyllus subsp. carthaginensis and describes the important damage it causes on leaves, stem, buds, flowers and fruits. Research highlights: A short description of the adults is given, including the genitalia, that are shown and described for the first time.

In the summer of 2012, two fires affected Mediterranean ecosystems in the eastern Iberian Peninsula. The size of these fires was at the extreme of the historical variability (megafires). Animals are traditionally assumed to recolonize from source populations outside of the burned area (exogenous regeneration) while plants recover from endogenous regeneration (resprouting and seeding). However, there is increasing evidence of in situ fire survival in animals. To evaluate the effect of large-scale fires on biodiversity and the mechanism of recovery, in 2013, we set up 12 plots per fire, covering burned vegetation at different distances from the fire perimeter and unburned vegetation. In each plot, we followed the postfire recovery of arthropods, reptiles (including some of their parasites), and plants for 2 to 5 years. Here we present the resulting database (POSTDIV) of taxon abundance. POSTDIV totals 19,906 records for 457 arthropod taxa (113,681 individuals), 12 reptile taxa (503 individuals), 4 reptile parasites (234 individuals), and 518 plant taxa (cover-abundance).
