A series of sixteen new derivatives have been obtained and all have potentially useful pharmacological activity. The treatment of 7ochloro and pbromophenyl7,8,9,10,11,12hexahydrobenzcacridin8one and Lawessons reagent obtains the corresponding 7o and psubstituted phenyl10,10dimethyl7,8,9,10,11,12hexahydrobenzcacridin8thione IIwhich was alkylated in presence of sodium hydride and the corresponding alkyl iodide under nitrogen atmosphere to obtain 8alkylthio7,9,10,11tetrahydrobenzcacridines III, 14. The thione IIwas desprotected and aromatized in presence of sodium hydride in absence of nitrogen atmosphere to produce a mixture of 7o and psubstitutedphenyl10,10dimethyl8,9,10,11tetrahydrobenzcacridin8one IV, 16and 7o and psubstitutedphenyl10,10dimethyl8hydroxi8,9,10,11tetrahydrobenzcacridine V, 16. The structure of all products was corroborated by ir, 1H NMR, 13C NMR with bidimensional experiments and ms with CID experiments.
