Streptococcus suis is an important pathogen in the swine industry. This article is the first to report the occurrence, risk factors, serotype distribution, and antimicrobial susceptibility of S. suis recovered from employees and environmental samples of swine slaughterhouses in Brazil. Tonsillar swabs from all 139 pig-slaughtering employees and 261 environmental swabs were collected for detection of S. suis and serotyping by monoplex and multiplex polymerase chain reaction, respectively. Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined by the disk-diffusion method. Although S. suis was not detected in any of the tested employees, it was isolated from 25% of the environmental samples. Significant differences (P < 0.05) in the occurrence of S. suis were observed between slaughterhouses and between areas of low, medium, and high risk. The most frequent serotypes were 4 and 29, each accounting for 12% of the isolates, followed by 5, 12, 21, and 31, each accounting for 6%. High rates of susceptibility to the antimicrobials doxycycline (100%), ceftiofur (94%), ampicillin (81%), and cephalexin (75%) were observed. However, multidrug resistance was observed in all the isolates. Because S. suis is present in the environment of swine slaughterhouses, on carcasses and knives, as well as on the hands of employees in all areas, all employees are at risk of infection.

Vaccinia virus (VACV), the etiological agent of an exanthematic disease, has been associated with several bovine outbreaks in Brazil since the end of the global vaccination campaign against smallpox. It was previously believed that the vaccine virus used for the WHO global campaign had adapted to an unknown wild reservoir and was sporadically re-emerging in outbreaks in cattle and milkers. At present, it is known that Brazilian VACV is phylogenetically different from the vaccinia virus vaccinal strain, but its origin remains unknown. This study assessed the seroprevalence of orthopoxviruses in domestic and wild animals and farmers from 47 farms in three cities in the southwest region of the state of São Paulo with or without official reports of outbreaks in cattle or humans. Our data indicate a low seroprevalence of antibodies in wild animals and raise interesting questions about the real potential of wild rodents and marsupials as VACV reservoirs, suggesting other routes through which VACV can be spread.

Background: The angiogenic induction property of the omentum makes it a promising pedicle for prefabricating flaps. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to establish the abdominal area to be prefabricated by the omental pedicle and to analyse the prefabricated potential (PP) according to the time delay between the pedicle introduction and the flap release., Methods: Forty-four rabbits were divided into four groups (A, B, C and D). In group A, a piece of skin, subcutaneous tissue and abdominal cutaneous muscle was fully released and sutured again in place. In the other groups, a 9-cm2 omental pedicle containing the gastromental vessels distally tied was transposed and sutured to abdominal cutaneous muscle. A second procedure, consisting of incision and release of the flap that contained skin, subcutaneous and cutaneous abdominal muscle pediculated only by the omentum, was carried out. The only variation was the time delay between the two procedures: 7, 21 and 56 days for groups B, C and D, respectively. The flaps were inspected 15 days after the last procedure. The pieces of viable area were immunostained using anti-CD31 for estimation of the microvascular density., Results: The mean and maximum viable areas in group D were 45.29 and 99.37cm2, respectively (average PP=5.03 and maximum PP=11.04). There was no significant difference between the viable areas in groups C and D. The mean microvascular densities of groups B, C and D were 24.54, 33.20 and 27.03 vessels/mm2, respectively., Conclusion: The omental tissue has great potential for prefabrication of flaps, and the delay time for the second procedure should be at least 21 days., (Copyright 2010 British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons. Despite the benefits from the minimally invasive technique, complications may occur, raising doubts about the safety of polymethylmethacrylate as an injectable filler material. The authors report their treatment of a patient from another institution with necrosis involving full-thickness nasal skin and upper lip after injection of polymethylmethacrylate in the nasolabial folds and nose for augmentation. An expanded median forehead flap was used to reconstruct the nose, and an Abbé flap was used for the upper lip. The flaps and the skin expander allowed reconstruction with correct texture, color, and dimensions, producing a good aesthetic and functional outcome.

Multiloop delayed negative feedback systems, with each feedback loop having its own characteristic time lag (delay), are used to describe a great variety of systems: optical systems, neural networks, physiological control systems, etc. Previous investigations have shown that if the number of delayed feedback loops is greater than two, the system can exhibit complex dynamics and chaos, but in the case of two delayed loops only periodic solutions were found. Here we show that a period-doubling cascade and chaotic dynamics are also found in systems with two coupled delayed negative feedback loops.
