Search

In the past years, we have undertaken an extensive investigation of LMC and SMC star clusters based on HST data. We present photometry and astrometry of stars in 101 fields observed with the WFC/ACS, UVIS/WFC3 and NIR/WFC3 cameras. These fields comprise 113 star clusters. We provide differential-reddening maps and illustrate various scientific outcomes that arise from the early inspection of the photometric catalogs. In particular, we provide new insights on the extended main-sequence turn-off (eMSTO) phenomenon: i) We detected eMSTOs in two clusters, KMHK361 and NGC265, which had no previous evidence of multiple populations. This finding corroborates the conclusion that the eMSTO is a widespread phenomenon among clusters younger than ~2 Gyr. ii) The homogeneous color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of 19 LMC clusters reveal that the distribution of stars along the eMSTO depends on cluster age. iii) We discovered a new feature along the eMSTO of NGC1783, which consists of a distinct group of stars going on the red side of the eMSTO in CMDs composed of ultraviolet filters. Furthermore, we derived the proper motions of stars in the fields of view of clusters with multi-epoch images. Proper motions allowed us to separate the bulk of bright field stars from cluster members and investigate the internal kinematics of stellar populations in various LMC and SMC fields. As an example, we analyze the field around NGC346 to disentangle the motions of its stellar populations, including NGC364 and BS90, young and pre-MS stars in the star-forming region associated with NGC346, and young and old field stellar populations of the SMC. Based on these results and the fields around five additional clusters, we find that young SMC stars exhibit elongated proper-motion distributions that point toward the LMC, thus bringing new evidence for a kinematic connection between the LMC and SMC., Comment: 37 pages, 27 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present proper motion (PM) measurements within the central region of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using near-infrared data from the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Cloud system (VMC). This work encompasses 18 VMC tiles covering a total sky area of $\sim$28~deg$^2$. We computed absolute stellar PMs from multi-epoch observations in the $K_s$ filter over time baselines between $\sim$12 and 47 months. Our final catalogue contains $\sim$6,322,000 likely LMC member stars with derived PMs. We employed a simple flat-rotating disc model to analyse and interpret the PM data. We found a stellar centre of rotation ($\alpha_0$ = 79.95 deg +0.22 -0.23, $\delta_0$ = -69.31 deg +0.12 -0.11) that is in agreement with that resulting from Hubble Space Telescope data. The inferred viewing angles of the LMC disc (i = 33.5 deg +1.2 -1.3, $\Theta$ = 129.8 deg +1.9 -1.9) are in good agreement with values from the literature but suggest a higher inclination of the central parts of the LMC. Our data confirm a higher rotation amplitude for the young ($\lesssim$0.5~Gyr) stars compared to the intermediate-age/old ($\gtrsim$1~Gyr) population, which can be explained by asymmetric drift. We constructed spatially resolved velocity maps of the intermediate-age/old and young populations. Intermediate-age/old stars follow elongated orbits parallel to the bar's major axis, providing first observational evidence for $x_1$ orbits within the LMC bar. In the innermost regions, the motions show more chaotic structures. We employed the {\it VISTA near-infrared $YJK_\mathrm{s}$ survey of the Magellanic System} (VMC), to analyse the $Y,\,J,\,K_\mathrm{s}$ light curves of $\delta$ Cepheid stars (DCEPs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Our sample consists of 4408 objects accounting for 97 per cent of the combined list of OGLE\,IV and {\it Gaia}\,DR2 DCEPs. We determined a variety of period-luminosity ($PL$) and period-Wesenheit $PW$ relationships for Fundamental (F) and First Overtone (1O) pulsators. We discovered for the first time a break in these relationships for 1O DCEPs at $P$=0.58 d. We derived relative individual distances for DCEPs in the LMC with a precision of $\sim$1 kpc, calculating the position angle of the line of nodes and inclination of the galaxy: $\theta$=145.6$\pm$1.0 deg and $i$=25.7$\pm$0.4 deg. The bar and the disc are seen under different viewing angles. We calculated the ages of the pulsators, finding two main episodes of DCEP formation lasting $\sim$40 Myr which happened 93 and 159 Myr ago. Likely as a result of its past interactions with the SMC, the LMC shows a non-planar distribution, with considerable structuring: the bar is divided into two distinct portions, the eastern and the western displaced by more than 1 kpc from each other. Similar behaviour is shown by the spiral arms. The LMC disc appears "flared" and thick, with a disc scale height of $h\sim 0.97$ kpc. This feature can be explained by strong tidal interactions with the Milky Way and/or the Small Magellanic Cloud or past merging events with now disrupted LMC satellites., Comment: 22 pages, 21 figures, accepted for publication on MNRAS. We present results from an analysis of $\sim$ 29,000 RR Lyrae stars located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). For these objects, near-infrared time-series photometry from the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds system (VMC) and optical data from the OGLE (Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment) IV survey and the Gaia Data Release 2 catalogue of confirmed RR Lyrae stars were exploited. Using VMC and OGLE IV magnitudes we derived period-luminosity (PL), period-luminosity-metallicity (PLZ), period-Wesenheit (PW) and period-Wesenheit-metallicity (PWZ) relations in all available bands. More that ~7,000 RR Lyrae were discarded from the analysis because they appear to be overluminous with respect to the PL relations. The $PL_{K_{\mathrm{s}}}$ relation was used to derive individual distance to $\sim 22,000$ RR Lyrae stars, and study the three-dimensional structure of the LMC. The distribution of the LMC RR Lyrae stars is ellipsoidal with the three axis $S_1$=6.5 kpc, $S_2$=4.6 kpc and $S_3$=3.7 kpc, inclination i=$22\pm4^{\circ }$ relative to the plane of the sky and position angle of the line of nodes $\theta=167\pm7^{\circ }$ (measured from north to east). The north-eastern part of the ellipsoid is closer to us and no particular associated substructures are detected as well as any metallicity gradient., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

We used data from the near-infrared VISTA survey of the Magellanic Cloud system (VMC) to measure proper motions (PMs) of stars within the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The data analysed in this study comprise 26 VMC tiles, covering a total contiguous area on the sky of ~40 deg$^2$. Using multi-epoch observations in the Ks band over time baselines between 13 and 38 months, we calculated absolute PMs with respect to ~130,000 background galaxies. We selected a sample of ~2,160,000 likely SMC member stars to model the centre-of-mass motion of the galaxy. The results found for three different choices of the SMC centre are in good agreement with recent space-based measurements. Using the systemic motion of the SMC, we constructed spatially resolved residual PM maps and analysed for the first time the internal kinematics of the intermediate-age/old and young stellar populations separately. We found outward motions that point either towards a stretching of the galaxy or stripping of its outer regions. Stellar motions towards the North might be related to the "Counter Bridge" behind the SMC. The young populations show larger PMs in the region of the SMC Wing, towards the young Magellanic Bridge. In the older populations, we further detected a coordinated motion of stars away from the SMC in the direction of the Old Bridge as well as a stream towards the SMC., Comment: 20 pages, 20 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Galaxy interactions distort the distribution of baryonic matter and can affect star formation. The nearby Magellanic Clouds are a prime example of an ongoing galaxy interaction process. Here we use the intermediate-age ($\sim1$-$10$ Gyr) red clump stars to map the three-dimensional structure of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and interpret it within the context of its history of interaction with the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the Milky Way. Red clump stars are selected from near-infrared colour-magnitude diagrams based on data from the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds. Interstellar reddening is measured and removed, and the corrected brightness is converted to a distance, on a star-by-star basis. A flat plane fitted to the spatial distribution of red clump stars has an inclination $i=35\deg$-$48\deg$ and position angle PA$=170\deg$-$186\deg$. However, significant deviations from this plane are seen, especially in the periphery and on the eastern side of the SMC. In the latter part, two distinct populations are present, separated in distance by as much as 10 kpc. Distant red clump stars are seen in the North of the SMC, and possibly also in the far West; these might be associated with the predicted `Counter-Bridge'. We also present a dust reddening map, which shows that dust generally traces stellar mass. The structure of the intermediate-age stellar component of the SMC bears the imprints of strong interaction with the LMC a few Gyr ago, which cannot be purely tidal but must have involved ram pressure stripping., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

(abridged)Variability is a key property of stars on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). Their pulsation period is related to the luminosity and mass-loss rate of the star. The long-period variables (LPVs) and Mira variables are the most prominent of all types of variability of evolved stars. The reddest, most obscured AGB stars are too faint in the optical and have eluded large variability surveys. Selection criteria are derived based on colour-colour and colour-magnitude diagrams from the combination of VISTA Magellanic Cloud (VMC) survey, Spitzer IRAC and AllWISE data. After eliminating LPVs with known periods shorter than 450 days, a sample of 1299 candidate obscured AGB stars is selected. K-band LCs are constructed combining the epoch photometry available in the VMC survey with literature data, analysed for variability and fitted with a single period sine curve to derive mean magnitudes, amplitudes and periods. A subset of 254 stars are either new variables, or known variables where the period we find is better determined than the literature value, or longer than 1000 days. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of these stars are fitted to a large number of templates. For this purpose the SEDs and Spitzer IRS spectra of some non-AGB stars are also fitted to have templates of the most likely contaminants in the sample. A sample of 217 likely LPVs is found. Thirty-four stars have periods longer than 1000 days although some of them have alternative shorter periods. Mass-loss rates and luminosities are estimated from the template fitting. Period-luminosity relations are presented for C- and O-rich Miras that appear to be extensions of relations derived in the literature for shorter periods. The fit for the C-stars is particularly well defined (with 182 objects) and reads Mbol = (-2.27 \pm 0.20) log P + (1.45 \pm 0.54)mag with an rms of 0.41 mag., Comment: A&A accepted

In this paper JK_s data from the VISTA Magellanic Cloud (VMC) survey are used to investigate the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) as a distance indicator. A linear fit to recent theoretical models is used which reads M_{K_s} = -4.196 -2.013 (J-K_s), valid in the colour range 0.75 < (J-K_s) < 1.3 mag and in the 2MASS system. The observed TRGB is found based on a classical first-order and a second-order derivative filter applied to the binned luminosity function using the "sharpened" magnitude that takes the colour term into account. Extensive simulations are carried out to investigate any biases and errors in the derived distance modulus (DM). Based on these simulations criteria are established related to the number of stars per bin in the 0.5 magnitude range below the TRGB and related to the significance with which the peak in the filter response curve is determined such that the derived distances are unbiased. The DMs based on the second-order derivative filter are found to be more stable and are therefore adopted, although this requires twice as many stars per bin. The TRGB method is applied to specific lines-of-sight where independent distance estimates exist, based on detached eclipsing binaries in the LMC and SMC, classical Cepheids in the LMC, RR Lyrae stars in the SMC, and fields in the SMC where the star formation history (together with reddening and distance) has been derived from deep VMC data. The analysis shows that the theoretical calibration is consistent with the data, that the systematic error on the DM is approximately 0.045 mag, and that random errors of 0.015 mag are achievable. Reddening is an important element in deriving the distance: we find mean DMs ranging from 18.92 (for a typical E(B-V) of 0.15 mag) to 19.07 mag (E(B-V) about 0.04) for the SMC, and ranging from 18.48 (E(B-V) about 0.12 mag) to 18.57 mag (E(B-V) about 0.05) for the LMC., Comment: A&A accepted

Type II Cepheids (T2Cs) are radially pulsating variables that trace old stellar populations and provide distance estimates through their period-luminosity (PL) relation. We trace the structure of old stars in the Bulge using new distance estimates and kinematic properties of T2Cs. We present new NIR photometry of T2Cs in the bulge from the VVV survey. We provide the largest sample (894 stars) of T2Cs with JHKs observations that have accurate periods from the OGLE catalog. Our analysis makes use of the Ks-band time-series to estimate mean magnitudes and distances by means of the PL relation. To constrain the kinematic properties of our targets, we complement our analysis with proper motions (PMs) based on both VVV and Gaia DR2. We derive an empirical Ks-band PL relation that depends on Galactic longitude and latitude: Ks0=(10.66+-0.02)-(2.21+-0.03)*(logP-1.2)-(0.020+-0.003)*l+(0.050+-0.008)*|b| mag; individual extinction corrections are based on a 3D reddening map. Our targets display a centrally concentrated distribution, with solid evidence of ellipsoidal symmetry--similar to the RR Lyrae (RRL) ellipsoid--and a few halo outliers up to >100 kpc. We obtain a distance from the Galactic center of R0=8.46+-0.03(stat.)+-0.11(syst.) kpc. We also find evidence that the bulge T2Cs belong to a kinematically hot population, as the tangential velocity components (sigma vl*=104.2+-3.0 km/s and sigma vb=96.8+-5.5 km/s) agree within 1.2sigma. Moreover, the difference between absolute and relative PM is in good agreement with the PM of Sgr A* from VLBA measures. We conclude that bulge T2Cs display an ellipsoidal distribution and have kinematics similar to RRLs, which are other tracers of the old, low-mass stellar population. We present the first spatially resolved map of stellar proper motions within the central ($\sim$3.1 $\times$ 2.4 kpc) regions of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The data used for this study encompasses four tiles from the ongoing near-infrared VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds system and covers a total contiguous area on the sky of $\sim$6.81 deg$^2$. Proper motions have been calculated independently in two dimensions from the spatial offsets in the $K_s$ filter over time baselines between 22 and 27 months. The reflex motions of $\sim$33~000 background galaxies are used to calibrate the stellar motions to an absolute scale. The resulting catalog is composed of more than 690 000 stars which have been selected based on their position in the $(J-K_s, K_s)$ color-magnitude diagram. For the median absolute proper motion of the SMC, we find ($\mu_{\alpha}\mathrm{cos}(\delta)$, $\mu_{\delta}$) = (1.087 $\pm$ 0.192 (sys.) $\pm$ 0.003 (stat.), $-$1.187 $\pm$ 0.008 (sys.) $\pm$ 0.003 (stat.)) mas yr$^{-1}$, consistent with previous studies. Mapping the proper motions as a function of position within the SMC reveals a non uniform velocity pattern indicative of a tidal feature behind the main body of the SMC and a flow of stars in the South-East moving predominantly along the line-of-sight., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We use deep multi-epoch PSF photometry taken with the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) to measure and analyze the proper motions of stars within the Galactic globular cluster 47 Tucanae (47 Tuc, NGC 104). The observations are part of the ongoing near-infrared VISTA survey of the Magellanic Cloud system (VMC). The data analyzed here corresponds to one VMC tile and covers a total sky area of 1.77 deg^2. Absolute proper motions with respect to ~9070 background galaxies are calculated from a linear regression model applied to the stellar positions in 11 epochs in the Ks filter. The data extend over a total time baseline of ~17 months. We found a median proper motion of the stars within 47 Tuc of (mu_a cos(d), mu_d) = (+5.89 +/- 0.02(stat) +/- 0.13(sys), -2.14 +/- 0.02(stat) +/- 0.08(sys)) mas/yr, based on the measurements of ~35000 individual sources between 5' and 42' from the cluster center. We compared our result to the proper motions from the newest US Naval Observatory CCD Astrograph Catalog (UCAC5) which includes data from the Gaia data release 1. Selecting cluster members (~2700 stars) we found a median proper motion of (mu_a cos(d), mu_d) = (+5.30 +/- 0.03(stat) +/- 0.70(sys), -2.70 +/- 0.03(stat) +/- 0.70(sys)) mas/yr. The values derived from the VMC data are consistent with the UCAC5 result, and are close to literature measurements obtained using HST. We combined our results with literature radial velocity measurements and reconstructed the orbit of 47 Tuc, finding that the cluster is on a low-ellipticity orbit and is confined within the inner ~7.5 kpc of the Galaxy. We show that the use of an increased time baseline combined with PSF-determined stellar centroids in crowded regions significantly improves the accuracy of the method. We present results from the analysis of 2997 fundamental mode RR Lyrae variables located in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). For these objects near-infrared time-series photometry from the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds system (VMC) and visual light curves from the OGLE IV survey are available. In this study the multi-epoch $K_{\rm s}$-band VMC photometry was used for the first time to derive intensity-averaged magnitudes of the SMC RR Lyrae stars. We determined individual distances to the RR Lyrae stars from the near-infrared period-absolute magnitude-metallicity ($PM_{K_{\rm s}}Z$) relation, which has a number of advantages in comparison with the visual absolute magnitude-metallicity ($M_{V}-{\rm [Fe/H]}$) relation, such as a smaller dependence of the luminosity on interstellar extinction, evolutionary effects and metallicity. The distances we have obtained were used to study the three-dimensional structure of the SMC. The distribution of the SMC RR Lyrae stars is found to be ellipsoidal. The actual line-of-sight depth of the SMC is in the range from 1 to 10 kpc, with an average depth of 4.3 $\pm$ 1.0 kpc. We found that RR Lyrae stars in the eastern part of the SMC are affected by interactions of the Magellanic Clouds. However, we do not see a clear bimodality in the distribution of RR Lyrae stars as observed for red clump (RC) stars., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, 3 tables. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The VISTA near infrared Y, J, Ks survey of the Magellanic System (VMC) is collecting deep Ks band time series photometry of pulsating variable stars hosted by the two Magellanic Clouds and their connecting Bridge. In this paper, we present Y, J, Ks light curves for a sample of 4172 Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) Classical Cepheids (CCs). These data, complemented with literature V values, allowed us to construct a variety of period-luminosity (PL), period-luminosity-color (PLC), and period-wesenheit (PW) relationships, valid for Fundamental (F), First Overtone (FO) and Second Overtone (SO) pulsators. The relations involving V, J, Ks bands are in agreement with their counterparts in the literature. As for the Y band, to our knowledge we present the first CC PL, PW, and PLC relations ever derived using this filter. We also present the first near infrared PL, PW, and PLC relations for SO pulsators to date. We used PW(V,Ks) to estimate the relative SMC-LMC distance and, in turn, the absolute distance to the SMC. For the former quantity we find a value of Delta(mu)=0.55+-0.04 mag, in rather good agreement with other evaluations based on CCs, but significantly larger than the results obtained from older population II distance indicators. This discrepancy might be due to the different geometric distributions of young and old tracers in both Clouds. As for the absolute distance to the SMC, our best estimates are mu(SMC)=19.01+-0.05 mag and mu(SMC)=19.04+-0.06 mag, based on two distance measurements to the LMC, which rely on accurate CC and eclipsing Cepheid binary data, respectively., Comment: 24 Pages, 20 Figure, 6 tables. We present Ks -band light curves for 299 Cepheids in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) of which 288 are new discoveries that we have identified using multi-epoch near-infrared photometry obtained by the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds system (VMC). The new Cepheids have periods in the range from 0.34 to 9.1 days and cover the magnitude interval 12.9 <= Ks <= 17.6 mag. Our method was developed using variable stars previously identified by the optical microlensing survey OGLE. We focus on searching new Cepheids in external regions of the SMC for which complete VMC Ks-band observations are available and no comprehensive identification of different types of variable stars from other surveys exists yet., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. We present results based on YJKs photometry of star clusters located in the outermost, eastern region of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We analysed a total of 51 catalogued clusters whose colour--magnitude diagrams (CMDs), having been cleaned from field-star contamination, were used to assess the clusters' reality and estimate ages of the genuine systems. Based on CMD analysis, 15 catalogued clusters were found to be possible non-genuine aggregates. We investigated the properties of 80% of the catalogued clusters in this part of the SMC by enlarging our sample with previously obtained cluster ages, adopting a homogeneous scale for all. Their spatial distribution suggests that the oldest clusters, log(t yr-1) >= 9.6, are in general located at greater distances to the galaxy's centre than their younger counterparts -- 9.0 <= log(t yr-1) <= 9.4 -- while two excesses of clusters are seen at log(t yr-1) ~ 9.2 and log(t yr-1) ~ 9.7. We found a trail of younger clusters which follow the Wing/Bridge components. This long spatial sequence does not only harbour very young clusters, log(t yr-1) ~ 7.3, but it also hosts some of intermediate ages, log(t yr-1) ~ 9.1. The derived cluster and field-star formation frequencies as a function of age are different. The most surprising feature is an observed excess of clusters with ages of log(t yr-1) < 9.0, which could have been induced by interactions with the LMC., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, MNRAS (accepted)

The VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds System (VMC) is collecting deep $K_\mathrm{s}$--band time--series photometry of the pulsating variable stars hosted in the system formed by the two Magellanic Clouds and the Bridge connecting them. In this paper we have analysed a sample of 130 Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Type II Cepheids (T2CEPs) found in tiles with complete or near complete VMC observations for which identification and optical magnitudes were obtained from the OGLE III survey. We present $J$ and $K_\mathrm{s}$ light curves for all 130 pulsators, including 41 BL Her, 62 W Vir (12 pW Vir) and 27 RV Tau variables. We complement our near-infrared photometry with the $V$ magnitudes from the OGLE III survey, allowing us to build a variety of Period-Luminosity ($PL$), Period-Luminosity-Colour ($PLC$) and Period-Wesenheit ($PW$) relationships, including any combination of the $V, J, K_\mathrm{s}$ filters and valid for BL Her and W Vir classes. These relationships were calibrated in terms of the LMC distance modulus, while an independent absolute calibration of the $PL(K_\mathrm{s})$ and the $PW(K_\mathrm{s},V)$ was derived on the basis of distances obtained from $Hubble Space Telescope$ parallaxes and Baade-Wesselink technique. When applied to the LMC and to the Galactic Globular Clusters hosting T2CEPs, these relations seem to show that: 1) the two population II standard candles RR Lyrae and T2CEPs give results in excellent agreement with each other; 2) there is a discrepancy of $\sim$0.1 mag between population II standard candles and Classical Cepheids when the distances are gauged in a similar way for all the quoted pulsators. We investigate how different stellar initial mass functions (IMFs) can affect the mass loss and survival of star clusters. We find that IMFs with radically different low-mass cut-offs (between 0.1 and 2 Msun) do not change cluster destruction time-scales as much as might be expected. Unsurprisingly, we find that clusters with more high-mass stars lose relatively more mass through stellar evolution, but the response to this mass loss is to expand and hence significantly slow their dynamical evolution. We also argue that it is very difficult, if not impossible, to have clusters with different IMFs that are initially "the same", since the mass, radius and relaxation times depend on each other and on the IMF in a complex way. We conclude that changing the IMF to be biased towards more massive stars does speed up mass loss and dissolution, but that it is not as dramatic as might be thought., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The VISTA near-infrared YJKs survey of the Magellanic Clouds system (VMC) has entered its core phase: about 40% of the observations across the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC, SMC), the Magellanic Bridge and Stream have already been secured and the data are processed and analysed regularly. The initial analyses, concentrated in the first two completed tiles in the LMC (6_6 including 30 Doradus and 8_8 including the South Ecliptic Pole), show the superior quality of the data. The depth of the VMC survey allows the derivation of the star formation history (SFH) with unprecedented quality compared to previous wide-area surveys while reddening maps of high angular resolution are constructed using red clump stars. The multi-epoch Ks-band data reveal tight period-luminosity relations for variable stars and they permit the measurement of accurate proper motions of the stellar populations. We present a catalogue of 1768 eclipsing binary stars (EBs) detected in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) by the second generation of the EROS survey (hereinafter EROS-2); 493 of them are new discoveries located in outer regions (out of the central bar) of the LMC. These sources were originally included in a list of candidate classical Cepheids (CCs) extracted from the EROS-2 catalogue on the basis of the period (0.89 $

Context. The Vista Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea (VVV) ESO Public Survey is a variability survey of the Milky Way bulge and an adjacent section of the disk carried out from 2010 on ESO Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA). VVV will eventually deliver a deep near-IR atlas with photometry and positions in five passbands (ZYJHK_S) and a catalogue of 1-10 million variable point sources - mostly unknown - which require classifications. Aims. The main goal of the VVV Templates Project, that we introduce in this work, is to develop and test the machine-learning algorithms for the automated classification of the VVV light-curves. As VVV is the first massive, multi-epoch survey of stellar variability in the near-infrared, the template light-curves that are required for training the classification algorithms are not available. In the first paper of the series we describe the construction of this comprehensive database of infrared stellar variability. Methods. First we performed a systematic search in the literature and public data archives, second, we coordinated a worldwide observational campaign, and third we exploited the VVV variability database itself on (optically) well-known stars to gather high-quality infrared light-curves of several hundreds of variable stars. Results. We have now collected a significant (and still increasing) number of infrared template light-curves. This database will be used as a training-set for the machine-learning algorithms that will automatically classify the light-curves produced by VVV. The VMC survey is obtaining multi-epoch photometry in the Ks band of the Magellanic System down to a limiting magnitude of Ks ~ 19.3 for individual epoch data. The observations are spaced in time such as to provide optimal sampling of the light curves for RR Lyrae stars and for Cepheids with periods up to 20-30 days. We present examples of the Ks-band light curves of Classical Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars we are obtaining from the VMC data and outline the strategy we put in place to measure distances and infer the System three-dimensional geometry from the variable stars. For this purpose the near-infrared Period-Luminosity, Period-Wesenheit, and Period-Luminosity-Colour relations of the system RR Lyrae stars and Cepheids are used. We extensively exploit the catalogues of the Magellanic Clouds' variable stars provided by the EROS-2 and OGLE III/IV microlensing surveys. By combining these surveys we present the currently widest-area view of the Large Magellanic Cloud as captured by the galaxy Cepheids, RR Lyrae stars and binaries. This reveals the full extent of the main structures (bar/s - spiral arms) that have only been vaguely guessed before. The VISTA near-infrared $YJK_\mathrm{s}$ survey of the Magellanic Clouds System (VMC, PI M.-R. L. Cioni) is collecting deep $K_\mathrm{s}$-band time-series photometry of the pulsating variable stars hosted in the system formed by the two Magellanic Clouds and the Bridge connecting them. In this paper we present for the first time $K_\mathrm{s}$-band light curves for Anomalous Cepheid (AC) variables. In particular, we have analysed a sample of 48 Large Magellanic Cloud ACs, for which identification and optical magnitudes were obtained from the OGLE III and IV catalogues. The VMC $K_\mathrm{s}$-band light curves for ACs are well sampled, with the number of epochs ranging from 8 to 16, and allowing us to obtain very precise mean $K_\mathrm{s}$ magnitudes with errors on average of the order of 0.01 mag. The $\langle K_\mathrm{s} \rangle$ values were used to build the first Period-Luminosity and Period-Wesenheit relations in the near-infrared for fundamental-mode and first overtone ACs. At the same time we exploited the optical ($V,I$) OGLE data to build accurate Period-Luminosity, Period-Luminosity-Colour and Period-Wesenheit relations both for fundamental-mode and first overtone ACs. For the first time these relations were derived from a sample of pulsators which uniformly cover the whole AC instability strip. The application of the optical Period-Wesenheit relation to a sample of dwarf galaxies hosting a significant population of ACs revealed that this relation is a valuable tool for deriving distances within the Local Group. Due to its lower dispersion, we expect the $K_\mathrm{s}$ Period-Wesenheit relations first derived in this paper to represent a valuable tool for measuring accurate distances to galaxies hosting ACs when more data in near-infrared filters become available., Comment: 14 Pages. Stellar clusters are regularly used to study the evolution of their host galaxy. Except for a few nearby galaxies, these studies rely on the interpretation of integrated cluster properties, especially integrated photometry observed using multiple filters (i.e. the Spectral Energy Distribution SED). To allow interpretation of such observations, we present a large set of GALEV cluster models using the realistic approach of adopting stochastically-sampled stellar IMFs. We provide models for a wide range of cluster masses (10^3 - 2 * 10^5$ Msun), metallicities (-2.3 <= [Fe/H] <= +0.18 dex), foreground extinction, and 184 regularly used filters. We analyze various sets of stochastic cluster SEDs by fitting them with non-stochastic models, which is the procedure commonly used in this field. We identify caveats and quantify the fitting uncertainties associated with this standard procedure. Context: The details of how galaxies have evolved are imprinted in their star formation history, chemical enrichment and morpho-kinematic structure. Parameters behind these can be measured by combining photometric techniques with modelling. However, there are uncertainties from the ambiguity of colour and magnitude and the effects of interstellar reddening. Aims: In this paper we present a detailed reddening map of the central 30 Doradus region of the Large Magellanic Cloud; for community use and to test the methods used. The reddening, a measurement of dust extinction, acts as a tracer of the interstellar medium (ISM). Methods: Near infrared photometry of red clump stars are used to measure reddening as extinction is the main cause of their colour and magnitude variance. The star formation history is used to convert colour to reddening values which are subsequently converted to visual extinction. Results: Presented is a dust map for the 30 Doradus field. This map samples a region of 1x1.5 deg, containing ~1.5x10^5 red clump stars which probe reddening up to AV=6 mag. We compare our map with maps from the literature, including optical extinction maps and radio, mid- and far-infrared maps of atomic hydrogen and dust emission. Through estimation of column density we locate molecular clouds. Conclusions: This new reddening map shows correlation with equivalent maps in the literature, validating the method of red clump star selection. We make our reddening map available for community use. In terms of ISM the red clump stars appear to be more affected by the cooler dust measured by 70 micron emission because there is stronger correlation between increasing emission and extinction due to red clump stars not being located near hot stars that would heat the dust. Context: The ESO Public Survey "VISTA Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea" (VVV) provides deep multi-epoch infrared observations for an unprecedented 562 sq. degrees of the Galactic bulge, and adjacent regions of the disk. In this survey nearly 150 new open clusters and cluster candidates have been discovered. Aims: This is the second in a series of papers about young, massive open clusters observed using the VVV survey. We present the first study of six recently discovered clusters. These clusters contain at least one newly discovered Wolf-Rayet (WR) star. Methods: Following the methodology presented in the first paper of the series, wide-field, deep JHKs VVV observations, combined with new infrared spectroscopy, are employed to constrain fundamental parameters for a subset of clusters. Results: We affirm that the six studied stellar groups are real young (2-7 Myr) and massive (between 0.8 and 2.2 10^3 Msol) clusters. They are highly obscured (Av ~ 5-24 mag) and compact (1-2 pc). In addition to WR stars, two of the six clusters also contain at least one red supergiant star. We claim the discovery of 8 new WR stars, and 3 stars showing WR-like emission lines which could be classified WR or OIf. Preliminary analysis provides initial masses of ~30-50 Msol for the WR stars. Context: The ESO Public Survey "VISTA Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea" (VVV) provides deep multi-epoch infrared observations for an unprecedented 562 sq. degrees of the Galactic bulge, and adjacent regions of the disk. Aims: The VVV observations will foster the construction of a sample of Galactic star clusters with reliable and homogeneously derived physical parameters (e.g., age, distance, and mass, etc.). In this first paper in a series, the methodology employed to establish cluster parameters for the envisioned database are elaborated upon by analyzing a subsample of 4 known young open clusters: Danks 1, Danks 2, RCW 79, and DBS 132. The analysis offers a first glimpse of the information that can be gleaned for the final cluster database from the VVV observations. Methods: Wide-field, deep JHKs VVV observations, combined with new infrared spectroscopy, are employed to constrain fundamental parameters for a subset of clusters. Results: Results inferred from the deep near-infrared photometry which features mitigated uncertainties (e.g. the accuracy of the photometry is better than 0.1mag for Ks<18mag), the wide field-of-view of the VVV survey, and numerous high quality low resolution spectra (typically more than 10 per cluster), are used to establish independent cluster parameters which enable existing determinations to be assessed. An anomalous reddening law in the direction toward the Danks' clusters is found, i.e. E(J-H)/E(H-Ks)=2.20+/-0.06, which exceeds published values for the inner Galaxy. The G305 star forming complex, which includes the Danks' clusters, lies beyond the Sagittarius-Carina spiral arm and occupies the Centaurus arm. Finally, the first deep infrared color-magnitude diagram of RCW 79 is presented which reveal a sizable pre-main sequence population. Simple stellar population (SSP) synthesis models are useful tools for studying the nature of unresolved star clusters in external galaxies. However, the plethora of currently available SSP models gives rise to significant and poorly documented systematic differences. Here we consider the outputs of the commonly used Bruzual & Charlot and GALEV models, as well as a recently updated SSP model suite which attempts to include the contributions of binary merger products in the form of blue straggler stars (BS-SSP). We rederive the ages, metallicities, extinction values and masses of 445 previously observed globular-like clusters in M31 based on chi-square minimisation of their spectral energy distributions with respect to these three different SSP models and adopting a Chabrier-like stellar initial mass function. A comparison between our new results and previous estimates of the same parameters shows that the Bruzual & Charlot models yield the youngest ages and lowest masses, while adoption of the BS-SSP models results in the oldest ages and highest mass estimates. Similarly, the GALEV SSP models produce the lowest metallicities, with the highest values resulting from the BS-SSP model suite. These trends are caused by intrinsic differences associated with the models, and are not significantly affected by the well-known age-metallicity degeneracy. Finally, we note that the mass function of the massive M31 star clusters is similar to that of the Milky Way's globular clusters, which implies that the two star cluster systems likely formed under similar environmental conditions., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The VISTA Magellanic Cloud (VMC, PI M.R. Cioni) survey is collecting deep Ks-band time-series photometry of the pulsating variable stars hosted by the system formed by the two Magellanic Clouds (MCs) and the "bridge" connecting them. In this paper we present the first results for Classical Cepheids, from the VMC observations of two fields in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The VMC Ks-band light curves of the Cepheids are well sampled (12-epochs) and of excellent precision. We were able to measure for the first time the Ks magnitude of the faintest Classical Cepheids in the LMC (Ks\sim17.5 mag), which are mostly pulsating in the First Overtone (FO) mode, and to obtain FO Period-Luminosity (PL), Period-Wesenheit (PW), and Period-Luminosity-Color (PLC) relations, spanning the full period range from 0.25 to 6 day. Since the longest period Cepheid in our dataset has a variability period of 23 day, we have complemented our sample with literature data for brighter F Cepheids. On this basis we have built a PL relation in the Ks band that, for the first time, includes short period pulsators, and spans the whole range from 1.6 to 100 days in period. We also provide the first ever empirical PW and PLC relations using the (V-Ks) color and time-series Ks photometry. The very small dispersion (\sim0.07 mag) of these relations makes them very well suited to study the three-dimensional (3D) geometry of the Magellanic system. The use of "direct" (parallax- and Baade-Wesselink- based) distance measurements to both Galactic and LMC Cepheids, allowed us to calibrate the zero points of the PL, PW, and PLC relations obtained in this paper, and in turn to estimate an absolute distance modulus of (m-M)0=18.46\pm0.03 for the LMC. The ESO Public Survey VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) started in 2010. VVV targets 562 sq. deg in the Galactic bulge and an adjacent plane region and is expected to run for ~5 years. In this paper we describe the progress of the survey observations in the first observing season, the observing strategy and quality of the data obtained. The observations are carried out on the 4-m VISTA telescope in the ZYJHKs filters. In addition to the multi-band imaging the variability monitoring campaign in the Ks filter has started. Data reduction is carried out using the pipeline at the Cambridge Astronomical Survey Unit. The photometric and astrometric calibration is performed via the numerous 2MASS sources observed in each pointing. The first data release contains the aperture photometry and astrometric catalogues for 348 individual pointings in the ZYJHKs filters taken in the 2010 observing season. The typical image quality is ~0.9-1.0". The stringent photometric and image quality requirements of the survey are satisfied in 100% of the JHKs images in the disk area and 90% of the JHKs images in the bulge area. The completeness in the Z and Y images is 84% in the disk, and 40% in the bulge. The first season catalogues contain 1.28x10^8 stellar sources in the bulge and 1.68x10^8 in the disk area detected in at least one of the photometric bands. The combined, multi-band catalogues contain more than 1.63x10^8 stellar sources. About 10% of these are double detections due to overlapping adjacent pointings. These overlapping multiple detections are used to characterise the quality of the data. The images in the JHKs bands extend typically ~4 mag deeper than 2MASS. The magnitude limit and photometric quality depend strongly on crowding in the inner Galactic regions. We derive the star formation history for several regions of the LMC, using deep near-infrared data from the VISTA near-infrared YJKs survey of the Magellanic system (VMC). The regions include three almost-complete 1.4 sqdeg tiles located 3.5 deg away from the LMC centre in distinct directions. To this dataset, we add two 0.036 sqdeg subregions inside the 30 Doradus tile. The SFH is derived from the simultaneous reconstruction of two different CMDs, using the minimization code StarFISH. The distance modulus (m-M)_0 and extinction Av is varied within intervals 0.2 and 0.5 mag wide, respectively, within which we identify the best-fitting star formation rate SFR(t), age-metallicity relation (AMR), (m-M)_0 and Av. Our results demonstrate that VMC data, due to the combination of depth and little sensitivity to differential reddening, allow the derivation of the space-resolved SFH of the LMC with unprecedented quality compared to previous wide-area surveys. In particular, the data clearly reveal the presence of peaks in the SFR(t) at ages log(t/yr)=9.3 and 9.7, which appear in most of the subregions. The most recent SFR is found to vary greatly from subregion to subregion, with the general trend of being more intense in the innermost LMC, except for the tile next to the N11 complex. In the bar region, the SFR seems remarkably constant over the time interval from 8.4 to 9.7. The AMRs, instead, turn out to be remarkably similar across the LMC. The fields studied so far are fit extremely well by a single disk of inclination 26.2+-2.0 deg, position angle of the line of nodes 129.1+-13.0 deg, and distance modulus of 18.470+-0.006 mag (random errors only) up to the LMC centre., Comment: 19 pages, to appear in A&A

Dust radiative transfer models are presented for all 374 AGB stars candidates in one of the fields observed by the new VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds (VMC). Mass-loss rates, luminosities and a classification of C- and O-rich stars are derived by fitting the models to the spectral energy distribution obtained by combining VMC data with existing optical, near-, and mid-infrared photometry. This exploratory study shows that our method provides reliable mass-loss rates, luminosities and chemical classifications for all AGB stars. These results offer already important constraints to AGB evolutionary models. Most of our conclusions, especially for the rarer dust-enshrouded extreme AGB stars, are however strongly limited by the relatively small area covered by our study. The new VISual and Infrared Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) has started operations. Over its first five years it will be collecting data for six public surveys, one of these is the near-infrared YJKsVISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds system (VMC). This survey comprises the LMC, the SMC, the Bridge connecting the two galaxies and two fields in the Stream. This paper provides an overview of the VMC survey strategy and presents first science results. The main goals of the VMC survey are the determination of the spatially resolved SFH and 3D structure of the Magellanic system. Therefore, the VMC survey is designed to reach stars as faint as the oldest main sequence turn-off point and to constrain the mean magnitude of pulsating variable stars such as RR Lyrae stars and Cepheids. This paper focuses on observations of VMC fields in the LMC obtained between November 2009 and March 2010. These observations correspond to a 7% completeness of the LMC fields. The VMC observations consist of multi-epoch measurements organised following a specific structure. The data were reduced using the VISTA Data Flow System pipeline whose source catalogues were produced and made available via the VISTA Science Archive. The analysis of the data shows that the sensitivity in each wave band agrees with expectations. Uncertainties and completeness of the data are also derived. The first science results, aimed at assessing the science quality of the VMC data, include an overview of the distribution of stars in colour-magnitude and colour-colour diagrams, the detection of planetary nebulae and of stellar clusters, and the Ks band light-curve of variable stars. The VMC survey represents a tremendous improvement, in spatial resolution and sensitivity, on previous panoramic observations of the Magellanic system in the near-infrared and complements nicely the deep observations at other wavelengths. Context: Warps occurring in galactic discs have been studied extensively in HI and in the optical, but rarely in the near-infrared (NIR) bands that trace the older stellar populations. Aims: We provide NIR data of nearby edge-on galaxies, combined with optical observations, for direct comparison of the properties of galactic warps as a function of wavelength, and calculate warp curves for each galaxy and obtain the characteristic warp parameters. We discuss these properties as possible constraints to the different mechanisms that have been proposed for the development and persistence of galactic warps. Methods: We observed 20 galaxies that were selected from a statistically complete diameter-limited subsample of edge-on disc galaxies. We used the Cerro Tololo Infrared Imager (CIRIM) at the CTIO 1.5m Ritchey-Chretien telescope to acquire the NIR data. We used the 1.54m Danish and 0.92m Dutch telescopes at the European Southern Observatory's La Silla site for our optical observations. Results: Our results show that 13 of our 20 sample galaxies are warped, with the warp more pronounced in the optical than at NIR wavelengths. In the remaining seven galaxies, no warp is apparent within the limitations of our automated detection method. The transition between the unperturbed inner disc and the outer, warped region is rather abrupt. S0 galaxies exhibit very small or no warps. We describe the public ESO near-IR variability survey (VVV) scanning the Milky Way bulge and an adjacent section of the mid-plane where star formation activity is high. The survey will take 1929 hours of observations with the 4-metre VISTA telescope during five years (2010-2014), covering ~10^9 point sources across an area of 520 deg^2, including 33 known globular clusters and ~350 open clusters. The final product will be a deep near-IR atlas in five passbands (0.9-2.5 microns) and a catalogue of more than 10^6 variable point sources. Unlike single-epoch surveys that, in most cases, only produce 2-D maps, the VVV variable star survey will enable the construction of a 3-D map of the surveyed region using well-understood distance indicators such as RR Lyrae stars, and Cepheids. It will yield important information on the ages of the populations. The observations will be combined with data from MACHO, OGLE, EROS, VST, Spitzer, HST, Chandra, INTEGRAL, WISE, Fermi LAT, XMM-Newton, GAIA and ALMA for a complete understanding of the variable sources in the inner Milky Way. This public survey will provide data available to the whole community and therefore will enable further studies of the history of the Milky Way, its globular cluster evolution, and the population census of the Galactic Bulge and center, as well as the investigations of the star forming regions in the disk. We discuss the observations and theory of star cluster formation to argue that clusters form dynamically cool (subvirial) and with substructure. We then perform an ensemble of simulations of cool, clumpy (fractal) clusters and show that they often dynamically mass segregate on timescales far shorter than expected from simple models. The mass segregation comes about through the production of a short-lived, but very dense core. This shows that in clusters like the Orion Nebula Cluster the stars >4 Msun can dynamically mass segregate within the current age of the cluster. Therefore, the observed mass segregation in apparently dynamically young clusters need not be primordial, but could be the result of rapid and violent early dynamical evolution., Comment: ApJ Letter, accepted

Context. We use Hubble Space Telescope photometry of six rich, compact star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), with ages ranging from 0.01 to 1.0 Gyr, to derive the clusters' stellar mass functions (MFs) at their half-mass radii. Aims. The LMC is an ideal environment to study stellar MFs, because it contains a large population of compact clusters at different evolutionary stages. We aim to obtain constraints on the initial MFs (IMFs) of our sample clusters on the basis of their present-day MFs, combined with our understanding of their dynamical and photometric evolution. Methods. We derive the clusters' present-day MFs below 1.0 Msun using deep observations with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph and updated stellar population synthesis models. Results. Since the relaxation timescales of low-mass stars are very long, dynamical evolution will not have affected the MFs below 1.0 Msun significantly, so that - within the uncertainties - the derived MFs are consistent with the solar-neighbourhood IMF, at least for the younger clusters. We use deep Hubble Space Telescope photometry of the rich, young (~20-45 Myr-old) star cluster NGC 1818 in the Large Magellanic Cloud to derive its stellar mass function (MF) down to ~0.15 Msun. This represents the deepest robust MF thus far obtained for a stellar system in an extragalactic, low-metallicity ([Fe/H]~-0.4 dex) environment. Combining our results with the published MF for masses above 1.0 Msun, we obtain a complete present-day MF. This is a good representation of the cluster's initial MF (IMF), particularly at low masses, because our observations are centred on the cluster's uncrowded half-mass radius. Therefore, stellar and dynamical evolution of the cluster will not have affected the low-mass stars significantly. The NGC 1818 IMF is well described by both a lognormal and a broken power-law distribution with slopes of Gamma=0.46+/-0.10 and Gamma~-1.35 (Salpeter-like) for masses in the range from 0.15 to 0.8 Msun and greater than 0.8 Msun, respectively. Within the uncertainties, the NGC 1818 IMF is fully consistent with both the Kroupa solar-neighbourhood and the Chabrier lognormal mass distributions., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted by MNRAS

Like other starburst galaxies, M82 hosts compact, massive young star clusters that are interesting both in their own right and as benchmarks for population synthesis models. Can spectral synthesis models at resolutions around 1000 adequately reproduce the near-IR spectral features and the energy distribution of these clusters between 0.8 and 2.4 microns? How do the derived cluster properties compare with previous results from optical studies? We analyse the spectra of 5 massive clusters in M82, using data acquired with the spectrograph SpeX on the InfraRed Telescope Facility (NASA/IRTF) and a new population synthesis tool with a highly improved near-IR extension, based on a recent collection of empirical and theoretical spectra of red supergiant stars. We obtain excellent fits across the near-IR with models at quasi-solar metallicity and a solar neighbourhood extinction law. Spectroscopy breaks a strong degeneracy between age and extinction in the near-IR colours in the red supergiant-dominated phase of evolution. The estimated near-IR ages cluster between 9 and 30 Myr, i.e. the ages at which the molecular bands due to luminous red supergiants are strongest in the current models. They do not always agree with optical spectroscopic ages. Adding optical data sometimes leads to the rejection of the solar neighbourhood extinction law. This is not surprising considering small-scale structure around the clusters, but it has no significant effect on the near-IR based spectroscopic ages. (Abridged) Aims: We obtained VLT/FLAMES+UVES high-resolution, fibre-fed spectroscopy (FFS) of five young massive clusters in M83 (NGC 5236). This forms the basis of a pilot study testing the feasibility of using FFS to measure the velocity dispersions of several clusters simultaneously, in order to determine their dynamical masses; Methods: We adopted two methods for determining the velocity dispersion of the star clusters: cross-correlating the cluster spectrum with the template spectra and minimising a chi^2 value between the cluster spectrum and the broadened template spectra. Cluster 805 in M83 was chosen as a control to test the reliability of the method, through a comparison with the results obtained from a standard echelle VLT/UVES spectrum obtained by Larsen & Richtler; Results: We find no dependence of the velocity dispersions measured for a cluster on the choice of red giant versus red supergiant templates, nor on the method adopted. We measure a velocity dispersion of sigma_los = 10.2+/-1.1 km/s for cluster 805 from our FFS. Our FLAMES+UVES velocity dispersion measurement gives M_vir = (6.6+/-1.7)e5 M_sun, consistent with previous results. This is a factor of ~3 greater than the cluster's photometric mass, indicating a lack of virial equilibrium. However, based on its effective star formation efficiency, the cluster is likely to virialise, and may survive for a Hubble time, in the absence of external disruptive forces; Conclusions: We find that reliable velocity dispersions can be determined from FFS. We analyse high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope/Advanced Camera for Surveys imaging of the nuclear starburst region of M82, obtained as part of the Hubble Heritage mosaic made of this galaxy, in four filters (Johnson-Cousins equivalent B, V, and I broad bands, and an Halpha narrow-band filter), as well as subsequently acquired U-band images. We find a complex system of ~150 star clusters in the inner few 100 pc of the galaxy. We do not find any conclusive evidence of a cluster-formation epoch associated with the most recent starburst event, believed to have occurred about 4-6 Myr ago. This apparent evidence of decoupling between cluster and field-star formation is consistent with the view that star cluster formation requires special conditions. However, we strongly caution, and provide compelling evidence, that the `standard' simple stellar population analysis method we have used significantly underestimates the true uncertainties in the derived ages due to stochasticity in the stellar initial mass function and the corresponding sampling effects., Comment: 10 pages, A&A, in press

The diagnostic age versus mass-to-light ratio diagram is often used in attempts to constrain the shape of the stellar initial mass function (IMF), and the potential longevity of extragalactic young to intermediate-age massive star clusters. Here, we explore its potential for Galactic open clusters. On the basis of a small, homogenised cluster sample we provide useful constraints on the presence of significant binary fractions. Using the massive young Galactic cluster Westerlund 1 as a key example, we caution that stochasticity in the IMF introduces significant additional uncertainties. We conclude that for an open cluster to survive for any significant length of time, and in the absence of substantial external perturbations, it is a necessary but not a sufficient condition to be located close to or (in the presence of a significant binary population) somewhat BELOW the predicted photometric evolutionary sequences for "normal" simple stellar populations (although such a location may be dominated by a remaining "bound" cluster core and thus not adequately reflect the overall cluster dynamics)., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in A&A (replacement of v1 in which our results were based on a circular argument)

The dynamical mass of a star cluster can be derived from the virial theorem, using the measured half-mass radius and line-of-sight velocity dispersion of the cluster. However, this dynamical mass may be a significant overestimation of the cluster mass if the contribution of the binary orbital motion is not taken into account. In these proceedings we describe the mass overestimation as a function of cluster properties and binary population properties, and briefly touch the issue of selection effects. We find that for clusters with a measured velocity dispersion of sigma > 10 km/s the presence of binaries does not affect the dynamical mass significantly. For clusters with sigma < 1 km/s (i.e., low-density clusters), the contribution of binaries to sigma is significant, and may result in a major dynamical mass overestimation. The total mass of distant star clusters is often derived from the virial theorem, using line-of-sight velocity dispersion measurements and half-light radii. Although most stars form in binary systems, this is mostly ignored when interpreting the observations. The components of binary stars exhibit orbital motion, which may increase the measured velocity dispersion, and may therefore result in a dynamical mass overestimation. In this paper we quantify the effect of neglecting the binary population on the derivation of the dynamical mass of a star cluster. We simulate star clusters numerically, and study the dependence of the derived dynamical mass on the properties of the binary population. We find that the presence of binaries plays a crucial role for very sparse clusters with a stellar density comparable to that of the field star population (~0.1 stars/pc3), as the velocity dispersion is fully dominated by the binary orbital motion. For such clusters, the dynamical mass may overestimate the true mass by up to an order of magnitude. For very dense clusters (>10^7 stars/pc3), binaries do not affect the dynamical mass estimation significantly. Using metallicities from the literature, combined with the Revised Bologna Catalogue of photometric data for M31 clusters and cluster candidates (the latter of which is the most comprehensive catalogue of M31 clusters currently available, including 337 confirmed globular clusters -- GCs -- and 688 GC candidates), we determine 443 reddening values and intrinsic colours, and 209 metallicities for individual clusters without spectroscopic observations. This, the largest sample of M31 GCs presently available, is then used to analyse the metallicity distribution of M31 GCs, which is bimodal with peaks at $\rm {[Fe/H]}\approx -1.7$ and -0.7 dex. An exploration of metallicities as a function of radius from the M31 centre shows a metallicity gradient for the metal-poor GCs, but no such gradient for the metal-rich GCs. Our results show that the metal-rich clusters appear as a centrally concentrated spatial distribution; however, the metal-poor clusters tend to be less spatially concentrated. There is no correlation between luminosity and metallicity among the M31 sample clusters, which indicates that self-enrichment is indeed unimportant for cluster formation in M31. The reddening distribution shows that slightly more than half of the GCs are affected by a reddening of $E(B-V) \la 0.2$ mag; the mean reddening value is $E(B-V) = 0.28_{-0.14}^{+0.23}$ mag. The spatial distribution of the reddening values indicates that the reddening on the northwestern side of the M31 disc is more significant than that on the southeastern side, which is consistent with the conclusion that the northwestern side in nearer to us., Comment: Accepted for Publication in MNRAS, 18 pages, 13 figures

We review our work on Galactic open clusters in recent years, and introduce our proposed large program for the LOCS (LAMOST Open Cluster Survey). First, based on the most complete open clusters sample with metallicity, age and distance data as well as kinematic information, some preliminary statistical analysis regarding the spatial and metallicity distributions is presented. In particular, a radial abundance gradient of - 0.058$\pm$ 0.006 dex kpc$^{-1}$ was derived, and by dividing clusters into age groups we show that the disk abundance gradient was steeper in the past. Secondly, proper motions, membership probabilities, and velocity dispersions of stars in the regions of two very young open clusters are derived. Both clusters show clear evidence of mass segregation, which provides support for the ``primordial'' mass segregation scenarios. Based on the great advantages of the forthcoming LAMOST facility, we have proposed a detailed open cluster survey with LAMOST (the LOCS). The presence of blue straggler stars (BSs) in star clusters has proven a challenge to conventional simple stellar population (SSP) models. Conventional SSP models are based on the evolution theory of single stars. Meanwhile, the typical locations of BSs in the colour-magnitude diagram of a cluster are brighter and bluer than the main sequence turn-off point. Such loci cannot be predicted by single-star evolution theory. However, stars with such properties contribute significantly to the integrated light of the cluster. In this paper, we reconstruct the integrated properties of the Large Magellanic Cloud cluster ESO 121-SC03, based on a detailed exploration of the individual cluster stars, and with particular emphasis on the cluster's BSs. We find that the integrated light properties of ESO 121-SC03 are dramatically modified by its BS component. The integrated spectral energy distribution (ISED) flux level is significantly enhanced toward shorter wavelengths, and all broad-band colours become bluer. When fitting the fully integrated ISED of this cluster based on conventional SSP models, the best-fitting values of age and metallicity are significantly underestimated compared to the true cluster parameters. The age underestimate is $\sim40$ per cent if we only include the BSs within the cluster's half-light radius and $\sim60$ per cent if all BSs are included. The corresponding underestimates of the cluster's metallicity are $\sim30$ and $\sim60$ per cent, respectively. The populous star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds are ideal objects to explore the potential importance of BSs for the integrated light properties of more distant unresolved star clusters in a statistically robust manner, since they cover a large range in age and metallicity., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Magellanic System represents one of the best places to study the formation and evolution of galaxies. Photometric surveys of various depths, areas and wavelengths have had a significant impact on our understanding of the system; however, a complete picture is still lacking. VMC (the VISTA near-infrared YJKs survey of the Magellanic System) will provide new data to derive the spatially resolved star formation history and to construct a three-dimensional map of the system.
