A relapse in pediatric oncology is experienced by mothers as a critical and threatening event. The diagnosis of the disease relapse implies in a new beginning of the treatment and the potential of failure and child loss. This study aimed to understand the mother’s experience of her child’s treatment phase. In this qualitative design study, a 39-year old mother participated in a semi-structured interview regarding aspects of her child’s treatment trajectory, the resonances in family relationships, and the confrontation of the possibility of death. A thematic content analysis was used to analyze the data. The results indicated themes related to the attribution of meaning to the experience, the perception of injuries in the relationship scope, and a constant threat of loss. Understanding the mother’s experiences can favor the planning of psychological interventions that support the attribution of a new meaning to the sickness-health process, as well as provide a preparation for the family regarding end-of-life care. The study aimed to identify the access at the first contact, one of the principles at the primary health attention, in public health unit, for children under five years with respiratory problems. It was a qualitative study, performed by hermeneutic language, whose conceptual basis is centered on care. The empirical part consists of interviews with companions of the hospitalized children and health professionals from primary care units and emergency. The understanding of the data by hermeneutic language guides the analysis. The results show that access to first contact is occurring in emergency care for acute episodes of health problems instead of the primary care units, without programmatic actions and advisement as a method of the daily action, as well as the primary health attention does not act as regulator of the health system, requiring of the reflection on its role as part of health services and the resumption of its function. Living with a chronic condition is difficult at any stage of life, especially when considering HIV/AIDS, a stigmatized condition that elicits so much discrimination and which may become an aggravating factor when it occurs during adolescence. This study aimed to understand the experience of adolescents with HIV/AIDS concerning medication adherence. This is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach. Nine adolescents aged between 12 and 18 years and six caregivers participated in the study. The organization of data focused on positive and negative aspects related to adherence. The results showed that adolescents have difficulties in medication adherence especially due to their side effects; they try to normalize their lives in such a way that stigma and discrimination do not compromise their quality of life and treatment adherence. This reflective study aimed to present some aspects of the concepts technical attainment, practical success and practical knowledge, with a view to a broader understanding of child nursing care. Health care is considered in the perspective of reconstructive practices, characterized as contingencies, highlighting the importance of the connection between technical attainment and practical success and the valuation of practical knowledge, based on philosophical hermeneutics, in the context of practical philosophy. Child health nursing can deal with technical attainment and practical success jointly, and also understand practical knowledge in the longitudinality of care. Health promotion, disease prevention, recovery and rehabilitation of child health should be indissociably associated with contextualized realities, shared between professionals and families, aiming to follow the child's growth and development, produce narratives, identify experiences, choices and decision making to broaden health care. The author reflects on palliative care. The author suggests that palliative care minimizes the suffering caused by diseases and by interventions which are used to treat them. The author argues that while palliative care has been accepted in many areas across the globe, millions of people die annually without access to it.

The article presents information on the measures taken by the Brazilian government to control cancer in children. In Brazil Juvenile cancer is considered a public health hazard due to its high rate of mortality, heavy financial costs of treatment and detection. The Permanent Forum of Integral Care to Children and Teenagers have suggested several measures to control cancer including illustrations of instructions to help diagnosis and communication of measures to implement primary care.

The Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer (GICC) aims to increase the cure rate for children with cancer globally by improving healthcare access and quality. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (St. Jude), and collaborators have joined efforts to improve outcomes of children with cancer in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) using the CureAll framework. In this article, we describe the process of developing regional resources aimed at accelerating the GICC implementation in LAC. In March 2021, PAHO formed regional working groups to develop core projects aligned with CureAll pillars and enablers. Seven working groups emerged from regional dialogues: early detection, nursing, psychosocial, nutrition, supportive care, treatment abandonment, and palliative care. PAHO arranged regular online meetings under the mentorship and support of St. Jude regional/transversal programs and international mentors. Between April and December 2021, 202 multidisciplinary experts attended 43 online meetings to promote the dialogue between stakeholders to improve childhood cancer outcomes. Fourteen technical outputs were produced: four regional snapshots, four technical documents, two virtual courses, one set of epidemiological country profiles, one educational content series for parents/caregivers, and two communication campaigns. The ongoing dialogue and commitment of PAHO, St. Jude, LAC working committees, and international collaborators are essential foundations to successfully accelerate GICC implementation. This is achievable through the development of materials of regional and global relevance. Further research and evaluation are needed to determine the impact of these strategies and resources on childhood cancer outcomes in LAC and other regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: to analyze the answers of parents and health care professionals concerning the involvement of parents in the care provided to hospitalized children. Method: exploratory study based on the conceptual framework of pediatric healthcare with qualitative data analysis. Results: three dimensions of involvement were highlighted: dally care provided to children, opinions concerning the involvement of parents, and continuity of care with aspects related to the presence and participation of parents, benefits to the child and family, information needs, responsibility, right to healthcare, hospital Infrastructure, care delivery, communication between the parents and health services, shared learning, and follow-up after discharge. Conclusion: the involvement of parents in the care provided to their children has many meanings for parents, nurses and doctors. Specific strategies need to be developed with and for parents in order to mobilize parental competencies and contribute to increasing their autonomy and decision-making concerning the care provided to children. This study aims to understand the experience of adolescents with cancer, family and the health team regarding death in the healthcare context, in the light of Edgar Morin's proposed theoretical framework of complexity. Participants were 12 adolescents, 14 relatives and 25 health professionals. The interview was used for data collection. The discussion of data was guided by the dialogic life-death in the context of care to adolescents with cancer. It was observed that the singularity in the way the adolescent experiences time and faces death and the possibility that the family will lose a loved one may not be in accordance with the care the health team offers, considering structural, organizational and affective aspects. It is not enough for the team just to rationally make choices on the use of diagnostic-therapeutic devices, in line with predefined moments in the disease. Cystic Fibrosis (CF), also known as Mucoviscidosis, is a chronic disease of autosomal recessive origin and so far incurable. This analysis considers some characteristics of patients and family members that indicate it is a stigmatizing disease. The CF stigma's impact on the lives of children and adolescents can affect treatment adherence, socialization, family relationships and the formation of their life histories, with direct consequences on their quality of life. Objective: to analyze the presence and extent of Primary Health Care attributes and the strength of affiliation of children under one year old in a Family Health Unit. Method: cross-sectional, descriptive study conducted between October 25, 2010 and May 14, 2011 with 44 mothers, using the Primary Care Assessment Tool to collect data. Data were analyzed by calculating the Essential Primary Health Care and General Primary Health Care scores. Results: mothers recognized and experienced aspects of accessibility, comprehensive care and coordination of care, as well as community guidance, marked by a concern and involvement on the part of the health team in the children's care, their families and community. Conclusion: The Primary Health Care team makes efforts to approach the community and meet their health needs, seeking instruments that aid the promotion of qualified care to children. This study aimed to describe the experience of families in the immunization of children under two years. Descriptive study with qualitative data analysis. Twenty-two subjects participated in unstructured interviews. Results were grouped into three categories: Practical knowledge on children's immunization; Responsibility and compulsory immunization of children; Increasing the scope of children's immunization practices. The findings highlight factors that increase vaccination rates: experience and personal fulfillment in maternity, fear of getting ill, recognizing it as good care, access, schedule flexibility, dissemination, immunization record card, immunization campaigns and availability of vaccines, and factors that increase non-vaccination rates: parent's inexperience, refusal to apply simultaneous immunization, fragmented care, absence of dialog, discrimination, false counter-indications and compulsoriness. Immunization centered on compliance with the calendar or in authoritarian situations is not tied to family care. The bond between health care professionals and families needs to be strengthened to increase the participation in child health protection and promotion measures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Live Library in Hospitals Project is a strategy adopted by several health institutions for the purpose of providing hospitalized children and adolescents the reading mediation of infant-juvenile stories through professionals and volunteers capable of this function. This study aimed to find out to what extent the reading of stories strategy proposed by this project in hospitals can be a communication resource to use with hospitalized children. In order to do that, empirical data collection was carried out through the use of semi structured interviews with the reader and children above the age of seven years and observation of reading sections. The qualitative data analysis was doing it and it was verified that the reading mediation favors the dialogs and relationships; contribute for the expansion of the diagnostic and therapeutic and development processes of children, relatives and health professionals. Objective: to identify aspects impacting on quality of life for children and adolescents with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis, from the perspective of health professionals, as an essential step for the construction of a specific module of the DISABKIDS® instrument., Method: methodological study. Data was collected between May and June 2012, through personal interviews with 12 participants, in two dialysis centers. The empirical material was analyzed according to the thematic content analysis, using the program MAXQDA - Qualitative Data Analysis Software., Results: we identifi ed seven themes: self-care, family support, impact of diagnosis, expectation of kidney transplant, truancy, socialization and stigma, grouped into three domains., Conclusion: the results showed aspects that impact the quality of life of these customers and, therefore, will be considered in the development of specifi c DISABKIDS® module. In addition, these aspects are relevant to the preparation and planning of actions directed towards children and adolescents with chronic kidney disease.

Objectives: to understand the family's experience of the child and/or teenager in palliative care and building a representative theoretical model of the process experienced by the family., Methodology: for this purpose the Symbolic Interactionism and the Theory Based on Data were used. Fifteen families with kids and/or teenagers in palliative care were interviewed, and data were collected through semi-structured interviews., Results: after the comparative analysis of the data, a substantive theory was formed "fluctuating between hope and hopelessness in a world changed by losses", composed by: "having a life shattered ", "managing the new condition", "recognizing the palliative care" and "relearning how to live". Hope, perseverance and spiritual beliefs are determining factors for the family to continue fighting for the life of their child in a context of uncertainty, anguish and suffering, due to the medical condition of the child. Along the way, the family redefines values and integrates palliative care in their lives., Conclusion: staying with the child at home is what was set and kept hope of dreaming about the recovery and support of the child's life, but above all, what takes it away even though temporarily is the possibility of their child's death when staying within the context of the family.

Objective: to understand the experience of care delivery to technology dependent children based on the mothers' experience., Method: exploratory study with qualitative approach, based on the theoretical framework of medical anthropology and the narrative method. Twelve mothers participated and, as the technique to obtain the narratives, open interviews were held at the participants' homes., Results: the narratives were organized into three thematic categories: the family system, identifying the care forms, the association between popular and scientific knowledge and the participation of the social network; the professional system, which discusses the relations between professionals and family, the hegemony of the biomedical model and the role of nursing; and the popular system, presenting popular care practices like spirituality and religiosity., Conclusion: the study provided support for a health care project that takes into account the families' moral and symbolic values and beliefs in view of the illness of a technology-dependent child. The results found can contribute towards changes in the health work process, so that its foundation is guided not only by the biomedical model, allowing the integration of the sociocultural dimensions into the health care movement.
