Aerobic exercise training (AER) may promote several adaptations in white adipose tissue (WAT), including a phenotypic change known as browning. The present study aimed at assessing if resistance exercise training (RES) would be as efficient as AER in inducing a brown-like adipocyte reprogramming in WAT. Thirty Swiss male mice were randomly divided into 3 groups with 10 animals each: 1) sedentary (SED), 2) AER, and 3) RES. After the adaptation training, an incremental test was performed at the beginning of each week to adjust training load. Mice were submitted to 8 wk of AER or RES. After the experimental period, inguinal and retroperitoneal WAT (iWAT and rpWAT) and brown adipose tissue (BAT) were collected. The prescription of AER and RES was effective in increasing the performance of both groups. Also, RES presented a lower body weight than AER/SED. AER and RES reduced the area of iWAT and rpWAT adipocytes and the lipid area of BAT, induced an increase of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and cluster of differentiation 31 (CD31) and uncoupling protein 1 (UCP-1), and increased the expression of selective genes of brown and beige phenotype in adipocytes after 8 wk. In general, we demonstrated here that AER and RES training similarly induced the browning of iWAT and rpWAT. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Aerobic exercise training (AER) induces the browning of white adipose tissue, turning adipocytes multilocular, highly vascularized and expressing uncoupling protein 1 (UCP-1). The current study compared the efficiency of resistance to aerobic exercise training to promote a brown-like phenotype. The aim of this study was to verify the maximum number of repetitions, fatigue index, blood lactate concentration ([Lac]), and cardiac autonomic responses after LED irradiation (LEDI) in the ipsilateral and contralateral limb. Twelve male subjects (22.0 ± 3.86 years; weight 82.94 ± 12.58 kg; height 1.77 ± 0.05 m), physically active, took part in this study. The subjects underwent a one repetition maximum (1RM) test and performed four randomly experimental sessions in the horizontal leg press exercise, which consisted in four sets of maximum repetitions at 80% of 1RM. The subjects performed two experimental sessions applying LED active or placebo on ipsilateral limb and two experimental sessions applying LED active or placebo on contralateral limb prior exercise and in the interval of sets on quadriceps and hamstrings muscles. A number of repetitions and fatigue index were verified. [Lac] and heart rate variability (HRV) were collected during post-exercise recovery and analyzed. It was observed that active LEDI promoted an increase in maximal number of repetitions (LEDI = 44.4 ± 9.0 vs placebo = 39.9 ± 11.4; p < 0.05) and decreases the fatigue index (LEDI = 34.3 ± 21.8% vs placebo = 50.0 ± 26.6%; p < 0.05) comparing to placebo situation, only in the ipsilateral application. There were no differences on [Lac] and in HRV parameters comparing LEDI vs placebo on post-exercise recovery in both applications (p > 0.05). The LEDI improves performance only in the ipsilateral application, but there were no differences on [Lac] and cardiac autonomic responses after exercise for both the applications. This study aimed at investigating the psychological, physiological, performance and perceptive responses to a regional level Brazilian jiu-jitsu competition. The study included 12 Brazilian jiu-jitsu athletes graded blue belt. The psychological responses were measured by the Profile of Mood States - POMS and Sport Competition Anxiety Test - SCAT. Glucose, β-hydroxybutyrate and lactate were determined from blood samples collected at rest and immediately after the fights at the earlobe. Saliva samples were also collected at rest and immediately after the fights to determine cortisol and immunoglobulin A (IgA). Maximal isometric grip strength was tested using a handgrip dynamometer, before and after the fights. Rating of perceived exertion was also assessed after the fights using the 6-20 Borg scale. The athletes were asked to indicate on an anatomical diagram of the anterior and posterior views of the body, the areas they perceived to have experienced most exertion during fights. Before the competition the athletes presented an iceberg profile of mood state and medium competitive anxiety. As a result of the fights, glucose, lactate, cortisol and IgA increased significantly. However, β-hydroxybutyrate level remained constant after the fights. Physical exertion during the match resulted in significant reductions only in the dominant handgrip strength. In addition, the athletes rated the fight as hard and very hard and indicated the forearm, wrist and frontal thigh as the principal points of fatigue. The results indicated that Brazilian jiu-jitsu fights exert a moderate demand on the glycolytic pathway and caused significant reductions in handgrip strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, the physiological responses and rate of perceived exertion in Brazilian jiu-jitsu fighters submitted to a combat simulation were investigated. Venous blood samples and heart rate were taken from twelve male Brazilian jiu-jitsu athletes (27.1±2.7 yrs, 75.4±8.8 kg, 174.9±4.4 cm, 9.2±2.4% fat), at rest, after a warm-up (ten minutes), immediately after the fight simulation (seven minutes) and after recovery (fourteen minutes). After the combat the rate of perceived exertion was collected. The combat of the Brazilian jiujitsu fighters did not change blood concentrations of glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein and very low density lipoprotein, ureia and ammonia. However, blood levels of high density lipoprotein were significantly higher post-fight (before: 43.0±6.9 mg/dL, after: 45.1±8.0 mg/dL) and stayed at high levels during the recovery period (43.6±8.1 mg/dL) compared to the rest values (40.0±6.6 mg/dL). The fight did not cause changes in the concentrations of the cell damage markers of creatine kinase, aspartate aminotransferase and creatinine. However, blood concentrations of the alanine aminotransferase (before: 16.1±7.1 U/L, after: 18.6±7.1 U/L) and lactate dehydrogenase (before: 491.5±177.6 U/L, after: 542.6±141.4 U/L) enzymes were elevated after the fight. Heart rate (before: 122±25 bpm, after: 165±17 bpm) and lactate (before: 2.5±1.2 mmol/L, after: 11.9±5.8 mmol/L) increased significantly with the completion of combat. Despite this, the athletes rated the fight as being light or somewhat hard (12±2). These results showed that muscle glycogen is not the only substrate used in Brazilian jiu-jitsu fights, since there are indications of activation of the glycolytic, lipolytic and proteolytic pathways. The article presents a study which compares the direct and indirect methods to determine the maximal oxygen uptake in female runners. The study was participated by 20 trained runners in which the gas analyzer VO2000 Inbrasport spirometer was utilized for the direct measurement of the maximal oxygen consumption while the ErgoPC program for the indirect measurement. It concludes that the obtained maximal oxygen uptake by an indirect approach undervalue the direct measurement.

Testicular morphology in obese and sedentary Wistar rats submitted to physical training. The aim of this study was to morphologically evaluate the effects of the cafeteria diet and physical training on the testicles of adult Wistar rats. Adult male rats were divided into groups (sedentary-control, sedentary-cafeteria, trained-control, and trainedcafeteria) In order to state the obesity condition both the Lee index and the weight of retroperitoneal and periepididymal adipose tissues were calculated. The testicular analysis involved the gonad weight and after the histological processing the Hematoxylin-Eosin staining parameters of tubular diameter, height of seminiferous epithelium, identification of the cellular sorts in the seminiferous tubules, counting of cells and overall output of spermatogenesis were done. The significant increase in the Lee index and the adipose tissue weight, in groups which received the cafeteria diet, stated the obesity condition indicating that this model is adequate to induce experimental obesity. There was no effect either from diet or training on the testicular weight, tubular diameter and height of seminiferous epithelium and also no difference in the histological organization of testicles and semineferous tubules. After cellular quantification and being calculated both mitotic and meiotic index and total capacity of Sertoli cells, it was verified a positive effect of the physical training, regardless of diet, on the overall output of spermatogenesis. Gluconeogenesis overstimulation due to hepatic insulin resistance is the best-known mechanism behind elevated glycemia in obese subjects with hepatic steatosis. This suggests that glucose production in fatty livers may differ from that of healthy livers, also in response to other gluconeogenic determinant factors, such as the type of substrate and modulators. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of these factors on hepatic gluconeogenesis in cafeteria diet-induced obese adult rats submitted to a cafeteria diet at a young age. The livers of the cafeteria group exhibited higher gluconeogenesis rates when glycerol was the substrate, but lower rates were found when lactate and pyruvate were the substrates. Stearate or glucagon caused higher stimulations in gluconeogenesis in cafeteria group livers, irrespective of the gluconeogenic substrates. An increased mitochondrial NADH/NAD+ ratio and a reduced rate of 14CO2 production from [14C] fatty acids suggested restriction of the citric acid cycle. The higher glycogen and lipid levels were possibly the cause for the reduced cellular and vascular spaces found in cafeteria group livers, likely contributing to oxygen consumption restriction. In conclusion, specific substrates and gluconeogenic modulators contribute to a higher stimulation of gluconeogenesis in livers from the cafeteria group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to analyze performance, time structure, technical actions, and perceptual responses of Brazilian jiu-jitsu athletes during matches of varied duration. For this, 10 athletes were analyzed in matches of varied duration (2-min, 5-ntin, 8-min and 10-rnin). Physical tests (reaction time, maximal isometric handgrip strength, grip strength endurance, vertical jump and sit-and-reach) and perceptive scales (exertion and recovery) were applied before and immediately after a combat. The matches were recorded for technicaltactical analysis and to determine their time structure. The main results showed that alterations were observed for the grip strength with kimono (p=.001), whereas a decrease was observed in the suspension time in the 8-min (p=,017) and 10-min (p=.002) combats compared to pre-match mean values. The rating of perceived exertion was influenced by time (p<.001), with higher values reported after combats of 8-min and 10-min duration compared to 2-min combat (p=.008 and p=.001; respectively). The effort:pause ratio did not differ between the times of combats (p=.472), but the pause time differed according to match duration (p=.004), with higher values observed in the 10-min combats than in the 2-min combats (p=.002). The aim of this study was to analyze physiological responses in Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) athletes during matches of varied duration. To this end, 10 athletes (age: 29±5 years, body mass: 77.5±6.3 kg, body fat: 10.0±5.2%, systematic BJJ practice: 10±2 years) were analyzed in matches of varied duration (2-min, 5-min, 8-min and 10-min). Blood collection was performed to determine energetic demands, hormonal responses and muscle damage. The main results showed that a longer duration of combat generated higher lactate (p<.001) and glucose (p=.004) concentrations. However, when the data were corrected for the effort time, higher lactate concentrations (p<.001) and higher heart rates (p<.001) were found for shorter combats. No changes were observed regarding insulin (p=.870), triglycerides (p=.219), total cholesterol (p=.170), albumin (p=.060) and urea (p=.772) values. For markers of muscle damage, no alterations were detected for creatine kinase (p=.401). However, evidence of muscle damage was found, as increased lactate desidrogenase (p=.012) and creatinine (p=.002) concentrations were observed, particularly in longer matches. Creatine is widely used by athletes as an ergogenic resource. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of creatine supplementation on the duodenum of rats submitted to physical training. The number and myenteric neuronal cell bodies as well mucosal and muscular tunic morphometry were evaluated. Control animals received a standard chow for 8 weeks, and the treated ones received the standard chow for 4 weeks and were later fed with the same chow but added with 2% creatine. Animals were divided in groups: sedentary, sedentary supplemented with creatine, trained and trained supplemented with creatine. The training consisted in treadmill running for 8 weeks. Duodenal samples were either processed for whole mount preparations or for paraffin embedding and hematoxylin-eosin staining for histological and morphometric studies of the mucosa, the muscular tunic and myenteric neurons. It was observed that neither creatine nor physical training alone promoted alterations in muscular tunic thickness, villus height or crypts depth, however, a reduction in these parameters was observed when both were associated. The number of myenteric neurons was unchanged, but the neuronal cell body area was reduced in trained animals but not when training and creatine was associated, suggesting a neuroprotector role of this substance.
