Area-preserving nontwist maps locally violate the twist condition, giving rise to shearless curves. Nontwist systems appear in different physical contexts, such as plasma physics, climate physics, classical mechanics, etc. Generic properties of nontwist maps are captured by the standard nontwist map, which depends on a convection parameter $a$ and a modulation coefficient $b$. In the spirit of non-autonomous systems, we consider the standard nontwist map (SNM) with a linearly increasing modulation coefficient, and we investigate the evolution of an ensemble of points on the phase space that initially lies on the shearless invariant curve in the initial state, called shearless snapshot torus. Differently from the SNM with constant parameters -- where we can see different scenarios of collision/annihilation of periodic orbits leading to global transport, depending on the region in the parameter space -- for the SNM with time-dependent parameters, the route to chaos is not only related to the path in the $(a, b)$ parameter space, but also to the scenario of the evolution of parameter $b_n$. In this work, we identify power-law relationships between key parameters for the chaotic transition and the iteration time. Additionally, we analyze system reversibility during the chaotic transition and demonstrate an extra transport, where parameter variation modifies the diffusion coefficient.

The diversity of 2D materials and their van der Waals (vdW) stacking presents a fertile ground for engineering novel multifunctional materials and quantum states of matter. This permits unique opportunities to tailor the electronic properties of vdW heterostructures by the insertion of only a single 2D material layer. However, such vdW materials engineering at the atomic scale has yet to be investigated for spin-charge interconversion phenomena. Here, we report on the control of these effects at the monolayer level, where drastic increase in intensity and change in sign of THz spintronic emission are demonstrated by inserting a single layer of MoSe$_2$ between PtSe$_2$ and graphene in a fully epitaxial, large area stacked structure. By using a combination of spin and angle resolved photoemission and density functional theory to reveal the electronic and spin structures, we illustrate two different mechanisms relying on charge transfer and electronic hybridization for the formation of Rashba states, which are responsible for spin-charge conversion and hence the THz spintronic emission. In a recent paper (Gonzalez et al., 2023), we investigated the motion of grains within a granular bed sheared by a viscous fluid, and showed how segregation and hardening occur in the fluid- (bedload) and solid-like (creep) regions. In this paper, we inquire further into the mechanisms leading to grain segregation in a bidisperse bed, and how the forces are distributed. For that, we carried out numerical simulations at the grain scale by using CFD-DEM (computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method), with which we were able to track the positions, velocities, forces, and solid contacts underwent by each grain. We show that during the upward motion of large grains the direct action of fluid forces is significant in the middle and upper parts of the bedload layer, while only contact forces are significant in the creep layer and lower part of the bedload layer. We also show that in all cases the particles experience a moment about a -45 degrees contact point (with respect to the horizontal plane) when migrating upward, whether entrained by other contacts or directly by the fluid. In addition, we show the variations in the average solid-solid contacts, and how forces caused either by solid-solid contacts or directly by the fluid are distributed within the bed. Our results provide the relationship between force propagation and reorganization of grains in sheared beds, explaining mechanisms found, for example, in river beds and landslides.

We inquire into the morphodynamics of barchans under seasonal flows. For that, we carried out grain-scale numerical computations of a subaqueous barchan exposed to two-directional flows, and we varied the angle and frequency of oscillations. We show that when the frequency is lower than the inverse of the characteristic time for barchan formation, the dune adapts to the new flow direction and recovers the barchan shape while losing less grains than under one-directional flow. For higher frequencies, the dune has not enough time for adaptation and becomes more round while losing more grains. For both cases, we show, for the first time, the typical dynamics of grains (trajectories and forces). In particular, the round barchans are similar to the so-called occluded dunes observed on Mars, where seasons have very high frequencies compared to the dune timescale, different from Earth. Creating 3D models through the Structure from Motion technique is a recognized, efficient, cost-effective structural monitoring strategy. This technique is applied in several engineering fields, particularly for creating models of large structures from photographs taken a few tens of meters away. However, discussions about its usability and the procedures for conducting laboratory analysis, such as structural tests, are rarely addressed. This study investigates the potential of the SfM method to create submillimeter-quality models for structural tests, with short-distance captures. A series of experiments was carried out, with photographic captures at a 1-meter distance, using different quality settings: camera calibration model, Scale Bars dispersion, overlapping rates, and the use of vertical and oblique images. Employing a calibration model with images taken over a test board and a set of Scale Bars (SB) appropriately distributed over the test area, an overlap rate of 80 percent, and the integration of vertical and oblique images, RMSE values of approximately 0.1 mm were obtained. Through Monte Carlo simulations and the Associating Lattice Gas Model, the phases of a two-dimensional fluid under hydrophilic confinement are evaluated. The model, in its unconfined version, reproduces the anomalous behavior of water regarding its density, diffusion, and solubility, among other dynamic and thermodynamic properties. Extreme confinements suppress phase transitions since fluctuations suppress ordering. The fluid under hydrophilic confinement forms a single wetting layer that gradually wets the wall. From the wetting layer, the low-density liquid structure is formed. The confined fluid presents a first-order liquid-liquid transition, but always at lower temperatures than that observed in the bulk.

In this work, effects of constant and time-dependent vaccination rates on the Susceptible-Exposed-Infected-Recovered-Susceptible (SEIRS) seasonal model are studied. Computing the Lyapunov exponent, we show that typical complex structures, such as shrimps, emerge for given combinations of constant vaccination rate and another model parameter. In some specific cases, the constant vaccination does not act as a chaotic suppressor and chaotic bands can exist for high levels of vaccination (e.g., $> 0.95$). Moreover, we obtain linear and non-linear relationships between one control parameter and constant vaccination to establish a disease-free solution. We also verify that the total infected number does not change whether the dynamics is chaotic or periodic. The introduction of a time-dependent vaccine is made by the inclusion of a periodic function with a defined amplitude and frequency. For this case, we investigate the effects of different amplitudes and frequencies on chaotic attractors, yielding low, medium, and high seasonality degrees of contacts. Depending on the parameters of the time-dependent vaccination function, chaotic structures can be controlled and become periodic structures. For a given set of parameters, these structures are accessed mostly via crisis and in some cases via period-doubling. After that, we investigate how the time-dependent vaccine acts in bi-stable dynamics when chaotic and periodic attractors coexist. We identify that this kind of vaccination acts as a control by destroying almost all the periodic basins. We explain this by the fact that chaotic attractors exhibit more desirable characteristics for epidemics than periodic ones in a bi-stable state.

Barchans are eolian dunes of crescent shape found on Earth, Mars and other celestial bodies. Among the different types of barchan-barchan interaction, there is one, known as chasing, in which the dunes remain close but without touching each other. In this paper, we investigate the origins of this barchan-barchan dune repulsion by carrying out grain-scale numerical computations in which a pair of granular heaps is deformed by the fluid flow into barchan dunes that interact with each other. In our simulations, data such as position, velocity and resultant force are computed for each individual particle at each time step, allowing us to measure details of both the fluid and grains that explain the repulsion. We show the trajectories of grains, time-average resultant forces, and mass balances for each dune, and that the downstream barchan shrinks faster than the upstream one, keeping, thus, a relatively high velocity although in the wake of the upstream barchan. In its turn, this fast shrinkage is caused by the flow disturbance, which induces higher erosion on the downstream barchan and its circumvention by grains leaving the upstream dune. Barchans are crescent-shape dunes ubiquitous on Earth and other celestial bodies, which are organized in barchan fields where they interact with each other. Over the last decades, satellite images have been largely employed to detect barchans on Earth and on the surface of Mars, with AI (Artificial Intelligence) becoming an important tool for monitoring those bedforms. However, automatic detection reported in previous works is limited to isolated dunes and does not identify successfully groups of interacting barchans. In this paper, we inquire into the automatic detection and tracking of barchans by carrying out experiments and exploring the acquired images using AI. After training a neural network with images from controlled experiments where complex interactions took place between dunes, we did the same for satellite images from Earth and Mars. We show, for the first time, that a neural network trained properly can identify and track barchans interacting with each other in different environments, using different image types (contrasts, colors, points of view, resolutions, etc.), with confidence scores (accuracy) above 70%. Present-day state-of-the-art ab initio many-body calculations on f-block containing cold molecules heavily focus on perturbative approaches for spin-orbit coupling and exclude a substantial part of the atomic transitions in the $f$- and $d$-shell. Here, we demonstrate the cruciality of a proper relativistic treatment of the $f$- and $d$-shell in Yb-containing diatomics and the inclusion of $f\rightarrow d$ transitions to obtain physically sound elastic scatterings and pre-dissociation lifetimes. We focus on state-of-the-art relativistic many-body calculations for the Yb atom's ground- and excited-state and the YbLi$^+$ potential energy surface. For that purpose, we exploit various quantum many-body methods, namely a spin-free and four-component implementation of the coupled cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) model and its equation of motion extensions, spin-free complete active space self-consistent field, and internally contracted multi-reference (MR) configuration interaction approaches, and spin-free MRCCSD with a perturbative and full triples correction. We oppose scalar relativistic calculations to four-component variants to support the reliability of our EOM-CCSD study and shed new light on the interplay between these systems' spin-orbit coupling and the proper treatment of relativistic effects. Most importantly, we observe a significant shift in the electronic spectra of the $f\rightarrow d$ excitation block. We also provide new reference potential energy surfaces for ground and excited states for which theoretically sound elastic scattering and pre-dissociation lifetimes are calculated., Comment: 4 figures, 2 tables

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) like MoSe$_2$ exhibit remarkable optical properties such as intense photoluminescence (PL) in the monolayer form. To date, narrow-linewidth PL is only achieved in micrometer-sized exfoliated TMD flakes encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). In this work, we develop a growth strategy to prepare monolayer MoSe$_2$ on hBN flakes by molecular beam epitaxy in the van der Waals regime. It constitutes the first step towards the development of large area single crystalline TMDs encapsulated in hBN for potential integration in electronic or opto-electronic devices. For this purpose, we define a two-step growth strategy to achieve monolayer-thick MoSe$_2$ grains on hBN flakes. The high quality of MoSe$_2$ allows us to detect very narrow PL linewidth down to 5.5 meV at 13 K, comparable to the one of encapsulated exfoliated MoSe$_2$ flakes. Moreover, sizeable PL can be detected at room temperature as well as clear reflectivity signatures of A, B and charged excitons., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Quantum heat machines, encompassing heat engines, refrigerators, heaters, and accelerators, represent the forefront of quantum thermodynamics, offering a novel paradigm for converting heat energy into useful mechanical work. Leveraging quantum mechanical principles, these machines promise superior efficiency and performance compared to classical counterparts, with potential applications in renewable energy and quantum computing. This paper investigates a quantum Otto engine operating in both ideal and finite-time scenarios, employing a two-level system interacting with a harmonic oscillator within the framework of the anisotropic quantum Rabi-Stark model (AQRSM) as the working medium. This model is notable for exhibiting both first-order and continuous quantum phase transitions. By focusing on quantum heat engines, our study reveals that these phase transitions critically modulate the efficiency and power of AQRSM-based engines, outperforming quantum engines fueled by working medium with harmonic spectrum. Additionally, we explore the impacts of quantum friction and conduct limit cycle analysis in finite-time operations, providing insights into optimizing quantum heat engines for practical implementation.

Integrity and reliability of a national power grid system are essential to society's development and security. Among the power grid components, transmission lines are critical due to exposure and vulnerability to severe external conditions, including high winds, ice, and extreme temperatures. The combined effects of external agents with high electrical load and presence of damage precursors greatly affects the conducting material's properties due to a thermal runaway cycle that accelerates the aging process. In this paper, we develop a thermo-electro-mechanical model for long-term failure analysis of overhead transmission lines. A phase-field model of damage and fatigue, coupled with electrical and thermal modules, provides a detailed description of the conductor's temperature evolution. We define a limit state function based on maximum operating temperature to avoid excessive overheating and sagging. We study four representative scenarios deterministically, and propose the Probabilistic Collocation Method (PCM) as a tool to understand the stochastic behavior of the system. We use PCM in forward parametric uncertainty quantification, global sensitivity analysis, and computation of failure probability curves in a straightforward and computationally efficient fashion, and we quantify the most influential parameters that affect the failure predictability from a physics-based perspective.

We introduce a counter-diabatic approach for deriving Hamiltonians modeling superchargable quantum batteries (QBs). A necessary requirement for the supercharging process is the existence of multipartite interactions among the cells of the battery. Remarkably, this condition may be insufficient no matter the number of multipartite terms in the Hamiltonian. We analytically illustrate this kind of insufficiency through a model of QB based on the adiabatic version for the Grover search problem. On the other hand, we provide QB supercharging with just a mild number of global connections in the system. To this aim, we consider a spin-$1/2$ chain with $n$ sites in the presence of Ising multipartite interactions. We then show that, by considering the validity of the adiabatic approximation and by adding $n$ terms of $(n-1)$-site interactions, we can achieve a Hamiltonian exhibiting maximum QB power, with respect to a normalized evolution time, growing quadratically with $n$. Therefore, supercharging can be achieved by $O(n)$ terms of multipartite connections. The time constraint required by the adiabatic approximation can be surpassed by considering a counter-diabatic expansion in terms of the gauge potential for the original Hamiltonian, with a limited $O(n)$ many-body interaction terms assured via a Floquet approach for the counter-diabatic implementation., Comment: 13 pages and 3 figures. In this work, we use modern electronic structure methods to model the catalytic mechanism of different variants of the molybdenum cofactor (Moco). We investigate the dependence of various Moco model systems on structural relaxation and the importance of environmental effects for five critical points along the reaction coordinate with the DMSO and NO$_3^-$ substrates. Furthermore, we scrutinize the performance of various coupled-cluster approaches for modeling the relative energies along the investigated reaction paths, focusing on several pair coupled cluster doubles (pCCD) flavors and conventional coupled cluster approximations. Moreover, we elucidate the Mo--O bond formation using orbital-based quantum information measures, which highlight the flow of $\sigma_{\rm M-O}$ bond formation and $\sigma_{\rm N/S-O}$ bond breaking. Our study shows that pCCD-based models are a viable alternative to conventional methods and offer us unique insights into the bonding situation along a reaction coordinate. This paper explores the solvability and global hypoellipticity of Vekua-type differential operators on the n-dimensional torus, within the framework of Denjoy-Carleman ultradifferentiability. We provide the necessary and sufficient conditions for achieving these global properties in the case of constant-coefficient operators, along with applications to classical operators. This study investigates the impact of disinformation on public policies. Using 28 sets of keywords in eight databases, a systematic review was carried out following the Prisma 2020 model (Page et al., 2021). After applying filters and inclusion and exclusion criteria to 4,128 articles and materials found, 46 publications were analyzed, resulting in 23 disinformation impact categories. These categories were organized into two main axes: State and Society and Actors and Dynamics, covering impacts on State actors, society actors, State dynamics and society dynamics. The results indicate that disinformation affects public decisions, adherence to policies, prestige of institutions, perception of reality, consumption, public health and other aspects. Furthermore, this study suggests that disinformation should be treated as a public problem and incorporated into the public policy research agenda, contributing to the development of strategies to mitigate its effects on government actions.
