Abstract

Effective calcium (Ca) management is crucial for optimizing oil palm cultivation and enhancing crop yield. This study aimed to gain insights into the dynamics of Ca concentration, accumulation, exportation, immobilization, and recycling in various oil palm organs relative to plant age. The experiment was conducted at the Agropalma enterprise site in the northeastern region of Pará State, Brazil, evaluating seven plant age treatments: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 years old. Employing a completely randomized design with four replications. The results demonstrated an age-related increase in Ca concentration in petioles, rachis, arrows, male inflorescences, peduncles, and fruits. Furthermore, Ca accumulation exhibited an upward trend in all organs with progressing plant age. Notably, the study revealed an enhanced Ca use efficiency across all plant organs in correlation with the age of oil palm cultivation. These findings underscore the dynamic nutritional demands of oil palm, influencing Ca immobilization, cycling, and export throughout its developmental stages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Due to rainfall and high temperatures, the Amazonian soil undergoes changes in its source material and leaching of base cations. This results in deep, infertile, and acidic soil. Aluminum present in acidic soil impairs plant growth and development by inhibiting root formation, enzymatic reactions, absorption, transport, and nutrient utilization. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of aluminum dosage on the metabolism of the oil palm Elaeis guineensis Jacq. The study was conducted in a greenhouse at the Federal Rural University of Amazonia. The experimental design was randomized, with five replications, in which dosages of 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 mg L-1 aluminum chloride (AlCl3.6H2O) were administered. Electrolyte leakage, nitrate, nitrate reductase, free ammonium, soluble amino acids, proline content, and soluble proteins were analyzed in the leaves and roots of the oil palm. The highest concentration of aluminum was found in the roots. AlCl3 treatment at 40 mg L-1 increased electrolyte leakage, nitrate, ammonium, and proline concentrations in the roots, and amino acid concentrations in both the leaves and roots. Furthermore, a decrease in nitrate reductase enzyme activity was observed in the roots. This study demonstrates that the oil palm has mechanisms of tolerance to aluminum toxicity. Abstract

Growth analysis (GA) is used to quantify plant development based on morphophysiological changes. GA is a practical tool to evaluate nursery techniques to make them more efficient. The objective of this essay was to quantity measure morphophysiological growth variables of Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla and Hymenaea courbaril (jatoba) container seedlings to characterize growth stages. The essay was conducted in a shade house located in the western state of Paraná. GA analyses were performed at 10-day intervals on seedlings of both species. When evaluating Hymenaea courbaril seedlings results indicated increased values of height, diameter, root and shoot dry biomass up to 130 days after emergence (DAE). Seedling growth stage-based GA were 70, 100 and 130 DAE for the Eucalyptus hybrid and 50, 80, and 110 DAE for jatoba which presented accelerated, intermediate and reduced seedling growth. Abstract

The development of anthropogenic activities such as industry, mining, agriculture, urban waste discard has been, the main actions that result in increased contamination by heavy metals in soil, water and air. One of the most harmful metals made available by these activities is cadmium, and even at low concentrations it is very toxic mainly in plant structures. The objective of this work was to verify the biochemical behavior of nitrogen and carbon metabolism in young plants of paricá when submitted to increasing cadmium application. For this, a completely randomized experiment was carried out with five treatments (control, CdCl2 178 µM, CdCl2 356 µM, CdCl2 534 µM, CdCl2 712 µM), with seven replicates, totaling 35 experimental units. The sensitivity of this vegetable to the increasing concentrations of cadmium was evident. The root system it presents" saw where the most toxic element accumulated, solutes such as carbohydrates, sucrose were affected in their concentrations, mainly in the leaves. The root system saw in its concentrations of glycine betaine a possibility of osmoprotection, but this did not reflect an increase in the concentration of nitrate in both leaf and roots. In the other hand, this fact not observed by the concentration of ammonium that increased in the root system. The results showed that the cadmium was transported to aerial part, however, concentrated mainly in the root system characterizing as a phytoextractor species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The aim of this research was to characterize the biochemical behavior of sorghum plants under saline stress using multivariate statistical analysis methods for efficient management of Sorghum bicolor [Moench.]). The experimental design was completely randomized design composed of three saline concentrations (0, 1.5 and 2.0 M) in 10 replications. In the multivariate analysis (hierarchical method), there were distinct and sub-groups in the sorghum plant treatments. Group 1 consisted of the root parts and under this group there were two subgroups: 1.5 to 2.0 concentration (Group 1) and 2 concentration (Group 2). The increase of NaCl concentration in the roots and leaves has inverse correlation with decrease of nitrate reductase, amino acids, protein and starch. The amounts of amino acids, carbohydrates, sucrose and proline in the roots and carbohydrates, sucrose and proline in the leaves of sorghum plants are reliable biological indicators of saline stress conditions in the soil. The nitrate compound differed (p ≤ 0.05) in the sorghum plant roots; it had an average value of 0.04 μmol kg-1 of nitrate in the control treatment dry matter. The nitrate average was between 0.04 and 0.06 μmol kg-1, but without statistical difference for all concentrations.Key words: Multivariate statistics, salt concentration, proline, carbohydrate.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the content of nitrate, free ammonium, nitrate reductase activity (Nra), and the levels of total soluble amino acids, proline, glycine betaine in young plants of crabwood (Carapa guianensis Aubl.) under to three water regimes and subsequent recovery process through the stresses suspension. The experiment was carried out on a greenhouse from Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia, Capitão Poço city, PA State. A completely randomized design on factorial scheme 3×5 was used (three water conditions: irrigated control, water deficit and flooding; and five evaluation times: 0 day, 10 days, 20 days, 30 days and suspension of water stress after 72 hours from the 30th day) with five repetitions, totalizing 75 experimental units. The results showed that the water potential, nitrate concentration and the Nra decreased significantly in plants under water stress, as well as in plants under flooding, with average of -3.46 MPa, 0.6 NO3-/kg DM, 0.1294 μmoles of NO2-/g FM/h (water potential, nitrate and Nra, respectively). The ammonium (NH4+) levels increased in the plant under water stress. The increasing level was more significant in the plants under water deficit, averaging 4.0 of mmol of NH4+/kg of DM. The amino acids levels, proline and glycine betaine had a significant increase in plants with water stress, especially in the plants under water deficit. The plants subjected to flooding did not show any significant result. After the suspension of the water stress, only the contents of free ammonium and levels and total soluble amino acids recovered to their initial values. To others variables, the stress suspension period was not enough for plant's total recovering. The young plants of crabwood subjected to water stress promoted changes in nitrogen metabolic pathways. These changes showed a bigger tolerance of the plants of crabwood to flooding.
