A study was carried out on the influence of particle size mixing, temperature and ore source on the reaction kinetics of the reduction of industrial phosphate pellets for P4 production. Specific parameters investigated were the diffusion of the phosphorus oxide and other gaseous products from the reaction mixture after reduction on the reductant (coke) surface, and the influence of silica, temperature, mineralogy and morphology, and particle size. Experiments were carried out in a vertical tube furnace with magmatic and sedimentary phospate ore, two types of SiO2 (pure silica and sand) and one type of coke. It was found that: the reaction rate increased with the addition of SiO2 into the pellet; the effect of Sio2 addition was considerably larger at 1400 than at 1350 degrees C; mixing of magmatic and sedimentary ores in the pellets caused differences in reduction kinetics; and reduction kinetics were influenced by particle size of the coke., A study was carried out on the influence of particle size mixing, temperature and ore source on the reaction kinetics of the reduction of industrial phosphate pellets for P4 production. The literature on the kinetics of tricalcium phosphorus reduction is reviewed. Usually phosphorus is produced in submerged-arc furnaces and it is believed that most of the reaction should take place in the bed or solid state due to the higher reduction rate. The position of the electrodes should be controlled to ensure a sufficiently high bed temperature. Experimental work with magmatic and sedimentary ores demonstrated the synergetic effects of mixing different ore types. The function of temperature and reductant was also investigated, with the help of a kinetic model and microprobe analysis.
