The so-called Buchdahl limit is not yet fully understood in the context of theories of gravity beyond the Einsteinian framework. In this investigation, we generalize this limit for the case of static, spherically-symmetric, relativistic compact stars in f(R) theories of gravity within the metric formalism. We present a comprehensive analysis that ensures regularity, thermodynamic stability, fulfillment of all required junction conditions, recovery of the Newtonian potential at long distances and a correct extraction of the asymptotic mass. Our results are exemplified for the f(R)=R+ alpha R^2 Starobinsky model and several realistic equations of state describing neutron-star matter. We also compare these results with the case of compact stars immersed ad hoc in an Schwarzschild exterior vacuum, although this scenario does not fulfill all necessary f(R) junction conditions. In this work, we focus on the dynamics of a massive one-form field, \textbf{B}, often referred to simply as a vector field, that is minimally coupled to standard Einstein gravity. In the framework of four-dimensional spacetimes, the theory of a massive one-form propagates three massive vector degrees of freedom. The inclusion of a self-interacting potential in this theory results in the breaking of gauge invariance. The breaking of such a fundamental symmetry in Classical Electromagnetism may introduce a ghost mode in massive vector theories, which generally leads to their instability. However, in the context of wormhole physics, the existence of at least one ghost degree of freedom turns out to be a necessary condition to support these exotic geometries within effective field theories. This requirement serves as a strong motivation for our work, wherein we explore the role and phenomenology of massive one-forms, minimally coupled to Einstein gravity, in providing the necessary conditions to sustain wormhole spacetimes. In the context of $f(R)$ gravity, as well as other extended theories of gravity, the correct counting of globally well-defined dynamical modes has recently drawn a vivid interest. In this communication we present a consistent approach shedding light on such issues for both so-called degenerate and non-degenerate $f(R)$ models embedded in maximally-symmetric backgrounds. We find that the linearised spectrum of degenerate models on these backgrounds is empty, lacking both the graviton and scalaron modes which appear in generic non-degenerate models. Our work generalises previous results in the literature applicable only to the specific (degenerate) model $f(R)=\alpha R^2$; in fact, we find that the same pathologies discovered therein emerge for all choices of $f(R)$ belonging to the wide class of degenerate models., Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure

We take into account redshift-space distortion measurements to investigate the growth of cosmological large-scale structures within the framework of modified symmetric teleparallel $f(Q)$ gravity. After comparing the predictions of the $f(Q)$-gravity expansion history with OHD and SNIa datasets and constraining the pertinent cosmological parameters $\Omega_{m}$ and $H_0$, together with the exponent $n$ for $f(Q)$ power-law models, we derive the full system of equations governing linear cosmological perturbations to study matter fluctuations using the $1 + 3$ covariant formalism when applied to $f(Q)$ gravity. Thus, we resort to both the usual redshift-space distortion data $f\sigma_8$ and some recent separate measurements of the growth rate $f$ and the amplitude of matter fluctuations $\sigma_8$ from the VIPERS and SDSS collaborations to find the best-fit cosmological parameters $\Omega_m$, $\sigma_{8}$ and $n$. In the context of ghost-free infinite derivative gravity we consider the single graviton exchange either between two spinless particles or between a spinless particle and a photon. To this end, we compute the gravitational potential for both cases and derive the quantum correction that arises at the linearized level. In the local theory it is well-known that such a correction is in the form of a Dirac delta function. In this work, we present novel analytical solutions for static and spherically symmetric wormhole geometries threaded by an anisotropic distribution of matter conformally coupled to a scalar ghost field. We explore the main features of the theory, such as the dynamics of the scalar field and matter throughout the wormhole, as well as the role played by the non-minimal coupling. Furthermore, coupled ghosts in the presence of a scalar potential are considered and traversability conditions are analysed within such geometrical scheme. We construct a numerical relativity code based on the Baumgarte-Shapiro-Shibata-Nakamura (BSSN) formulation for the gravitational quadratic $f(R)$ Starobinsky model. By removing the assumption that the determinant of the conformal 3-metric is unity, we first generalize the BSSN formulation for general $f(R)$ gravity theories in the metric formalism to accommodate arbitrary coordinates for the first time. We then describe the implementation of this formalism to the paradigmatic Starobinsky model. We apply the implementation to three scenarios: the Schwarzschild black hole solution, flat space with non-trivial gauge dynamics, and a massless Klein-Gordon scalar field. In each case, long-term stability and second-order convergence is demonstrated. The case of the massless Klein-Gordon scalar field is used to exercise the additional terms and variables resulting from the $f(R)$ contributions. We examine the quantum gravitational entanglement of two test masses in the context of linearized General Relativity with specific non-local interaction with matter. To accomplish this, we consider an energy-momentum tensor describing two test particles of equal mass with each possessing some non-zero momentum. After discussing the quantization of the linearized theory, we compute the gravitational energy shift which is operator-valued in this case. As compared to the local gravitational interaction, we find that the change in the gravitational energy due to the self-interaction terms is finite. We then move on to study the quantum gravity induced entanglement of masses for two different scenarios. The first scenario involves treating the two test masses as harmonic oscillators with an interaction Hamiltonian given by the aforesaid gravitational energy shift. In the second scenario, each of the test masses is placed in a quantum spatial superposition of two locations, based on their respective spin states, and their entanglement being induced by the gravitational interaction and the shift in the vacuum energy. Constant-curvature solutions lie at the very core of gravitational physics, with Schwarzschild and (Anti)-de Sitter being two of the most paradigmatic examples. Although such kind of solutions are very well-known in General Relativity, that is not the case for theories of gravity beyond the Einsteinian paradigm. In this article, we provide a systematic overview on $f(R)$ models allowing for constant-curvature solutions, as well as of the constant-curvature solutions themselves. We conclude that the vast majority of these $f(R)$ models suffer, in general, from several shortcomings rendering their viability extremely limited, when not ruled out by physical evidence. Among these deficiencies are instabilities (including previously unforeseen strong-coupling problems) and issues limiting the predictive power of the models. In this work, we study the junction conditions of the ghost-free subclass of quadratic Poincar\'e Gauge gravity, which propagates one scalar and one pseudo-scalar. For this purpose, we revisit the theory of distributions and junction conditions in gravity, giving a novel insight to the subject by introducing a convenient notation to deal with regular and singular parts. Then, we apply this formalism to bi-scalar Poincar\'e Gauge gravity and study some paradigmatic cases. We compare our results with the existing literature and the well-known predictions of General Relativity. We find that monopole spin densities are admissible, whereas both thin shells and double layers are allowed for the energy-momentum. f(R) gravity is one of the simplest viable modifications to General Relativity: it passes local astrophysical tests, predicts both the early-time cosmic inflation and the late-time cosmic acceleration, and also describes dark matter. In this paper, we probe cosmic magnification on large scales in f(R) gravity, using the well-known Hu-Sawicki model as an example. Our results indicate that at redshifts z < 3, values of the model exponent n > 1 lead to inconsistent behaviour in the evolution of scalar perturbations. Moreover, when relativistic effects are taken into account in the large scale analysis, our results show that as z increases, large-scale changes in the cosmic magnification angular power spectrum owing to integral values of n tend to share a similar pattern, while those of decimal values tend to share another. This feature could be searched for in the experimental data, as a potential "smoking gun" for the given class of gravity models. Furthermore, we found that at z = 1 and lower, relativistic effects lead to a suppression of the cosmic magnification on large scales in f(R) gravity, relative to the concordance model; whereas, at z > 1, relativistic effects lead to a relative boost of the cosmic magnification. We present the ghost-free infinite-derivative extensions of the Spherically-Reduced Gravity (SRG) and Callan-Giddings-Harvey-Strominger (CGHS) theories in two space-time dimensions. For the case of SRG, we specify the Schwarzschild-type gauge and diagonalise the quadratic action for field perturbations after taking the background fields to be those of the flat-space solution with a linear dilaton. Using the obtained diagonalisation, we construct ghost-free infinite-derivative modifications of the SRG theory. In the context of this modified SRG theory we derive a non-local modification of the linearised spherically-reduced Schwarzschild solution. For the case of CGHS gravity, we work in the conformal gauge and diagonalise the quadratic action associated with this theory for a general background solution. Gravitational collapse is still poorly understood in the context of $f(R)$ theories of gravity, since the Oppenheimer-Snyder model is incompatible with their junction conditions. In this work, we will present a systematic approach to the problem. Starting with a thorough analysis of how the Oppenheimer-Snyder construction should be generalised to fit within metric $f(R)$ gravity, we shall subsequently proceed to explore the existence of novel exterior solutions compatible with physically viable interiors. Our formalism has allowed us to show that some paradigmatic vacuum metrics cannot represent spacetime outside a collapsing dust star in metric $f(R)$ gravity. Moreover, using the junction conditions, we have found a novel vacuole solution of a large class of $f(R)$ models, whose exterior spacetime is documented here for the first time in the literature as well. We study a quintessence model for which the scalar field is disformally coupled to dark matter. The background mimics the LCDM cosmological evolution and the quintessence potential is not specified. A disformal effect due to the quintessential mass is seen in the growth rate of the cosmological structure on large scales. The disformal parameter renders no appreciable effect on the evolution of the total matter perturbation. General Relativity and the $\Lambda$CDM framework are currently the standard lore and constitute the concordance paradigm. Nevertheless, long-standing open theoretical issues, as well as possible new observational ones arising from the explosive development of cosmology the last two decades, offer the motivation and lead a large amount of research to be devoted in constructing various extensions and modifications. All extended theories and scenarios are first examined under the light of theoretical consistency, and then are applied to various geometrical backgrounds, such as the cosmological and the spherical symmetric ones. Their predictions at both the background and perturbation levels, and concerning cosmology at early, intermediate and late times, are then confronted with the huge amount of observational data that astrophysics and cosmology are able to offer recently. Theories, scenarios and models that successfully and efficiently pass the above steps are classified as viable and are candidates for the description of Nature. This work is a Review of the recent developments in the fields of gravity and cosmology, presenting the state of the art, high-lighting the open problems, and outlining the directions of future research. The coupled quintessence model with disformal couplings is treated here to mimic the $\Lambda$CDM background. Using this approach, the quintessence potential does not have to be specified. The model considers a generic fluid coupled to the quintessence, which is specified to be either dark matter or a relativistic fluid. The background consists of a cosmological constant and another uncoupled generic fluid, to cater for three studied scenarios. The cosmological dynamics is investigated for the coupled quintessence model, whose disformal couplings depend on the equation of state of both generic fluids. The key probes of the growth of large-scale structure are its rate $f$ and amplitude $\sigma_8$. Redshift space distortions in the galaxy power spectrum allow us to measure only the combination $f\sigma_8$, which can be used to constrain the standard cosmological model or alternatives. By using measurements of the galaxy-galaxy lensing cross-correlation spectrum or of the galaxy bispectrum, it is possible to break the $f\sigma_8$ degeneracy and obtain separate estimates of $f$ and $\sigma_8$ from the same galaxy sample. Currently there are only a handful of such separate measurements, but even this allows for improved constraints on cosmological models. We explore how having a larger and more precise sample of such measurements in the future could constrain further cosmological models. We consider what can be achieved by a future nominal sample that delivers a $\sim 1\%$ constraint on $f$ and $\sigma_8$ separately, compared to the case with a similar precision on the combination $f\sigma_8$. For the six cosmological parameters of $\Lambda$CDM, we find improvements of $\sim\! 5$--$50\%$ on their constraints. For modified gravity models in the Horndeski class, the improvements on these standard parameters are $\sim\! 0$--$15\%$. In this manuscript we will present the theoretical framework of the recently proposed infinite derivative theory of gravity with a non-symmetric connection. The cosmological scalar perturbations of standard matter are investigated in the context of extended teleparallel $f(T)$ gravity theories using the $1+3$ covariant formalism. After a review of the background, gravitational field equations of $f(T)$ gravity and the introduction of the covariant perturbation variables, the usual scalar and harmonic decomposition have been performed, and the analysis of the growth of the density contrasts in the quasi-static approximation for two non-interacting fluids scenarios, namely torsion-dust and torsion-radiation mixtures is presented for the generic $f(T)$ gravity theory. Special applications to two classes of $f(T)$ gravity toy models, namely $f(T) = \mu T_0 (T/T_0)^n$ and $f(T) = T + \mu T_0 (-T/T_0)^n$, have then been made within the observationally viable regions of their respective parameter spaces, and the growth of the matter density contrast for both torsion-dust and torsion-radiation epochs of the Universe has been examined. The exact solutions of the dust perturbations, with growing amplitudes in cosmic time, are obtained for some limiting cases of n. Similarly, the long- and short-wavelength modes in the torsion-radiation case are treated, with the amplitudes either oscillating or monotonically growing with time. Overall, it is noted that $f(T)$ models contain a richer set of observationally viable structure growth scenarios that can be tested against up- and-coming observational data and can accommodate currently known features of the large-scale structure power spectrum in the general relativistic and $\Lambda$CDM limits., Comment: Published version

We use growth of structure data to constrain the effective field theory of dark energy. Considering as case study Horndeski theories with the speed of gravitational waves equal to that of light, we show how constraints on the free parameters and the large-scale structure phenomenological functions can be improved by two ingredients: firstly by complementing the set of redshift-space distortions data with the three recent measurements of the growth rate $f$ and the amplitude of matter fluctuations $\sigma_8$ from the VIPERS and SDSS collaborations; secondly by applying a local Solar System bound on the variation of the Newton constant. This analysis allows us to conclude that: $i)$ despite firmly restricting the predictions of weaker gravity, the inclusion of the Solar System bound does not prevent suppressed growth relative to the standard model $\Lambda$CDM at low redshifts; $ii)$ the same bound in conjunction with the growth of structure data strongly restricts the redshift evolution of the gravitational slip parameter to be close to unity and the present value is constrained to one at the $10^{-3}$ level; $iii)$ the growth of structure data favours a fifth force contribution to the effective gravitational coupling at low redshifts and at more than one sigma at present time., Comment: Accepted for publication in JCAP

We present a novel approach to establish the Birkhoff's theorem validity in the so-called quadratic Poincar\'e Gauge theories of gravity. By obtaining the field equations via the Palatini formalism, we find paradigmatic scenarios where the theorem applies neatly. For more general and physically relevant situations, a suitable decomposition of the torsion tensor also allows us to establish the validity of the theorem. Our analysis shows rigorously how for all stable cases under consideration, the only solution of the vacuum field equations is a torsionless Schwarzschild spacetime, although it is possible to find non-Schwarzschild metrics in the realm of unstable Lagrangians. The grand challenges of contemporary fundamental physics---dark matter, dark energy, vacuum energy, inflation and early universe cosmology, singularities and the hierarchy problem---all involve gravity as a key component. And of all gravitational phenomena, black holes stand out in their elegant simplicity, while harbouring some of the most remarkable predictions of General Relativity: event horizons, singularities and ergoregions. The hitherto invisible landscape of the gravitational Universe is being unveiled before our eyes: the historical direct detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration marks the dawn of a new era of scientific exploration. Gravitational-wave astronomy will allow us to test models of black hole formation, growth and evolution, as well as models of gravitational-wave generation and propagation. In the context of extended Teleparallel gravity theories with a 3+1 dimensions Gauss-Bonnet analog term, we address the possibility of these theories reproducing several well-known cosmological bouncing scenarios in a four-dimensional Friedmann-Lema\^itre-Robertson-Walker geometry. We shall study which types of gravitational Lagrangians are capable of reconstructing bouncing solutions provided by analytical expressions for symmetric, oscillatory, superbounce, the matter bounce and singular bounce. Some of the Lagrangians discovered are both analytical at the origin having Minkowski and Schwarzschild as vacuum solutions. In the following work, we compute the positron production from branon dark matter annihilations in order to constrain extra-dimensional theories. By having assumed that the positron fraction measured by AMS-02 is well explained just with astrophysical sources, exclusion diagrams for the branon mass and the tension of the brane, the two parameters characterising the branon phenomenology become possible. Our analysis has been performed for a minimal and a medium diffusion model in one extra dimension for both pseudo-isothermal and Navarro Frenck White dark matter haloes. Our constraints in the dark matter mass candidate range between 200 GeV and 100 TeV. Combined with previous cosmological analyses and experimental data in colliders, it allows us to set bounds on the parameter space of branons. In the context of extended Teleparallel gravity theories with a 3+1 dimensions Gauss-Bonnet analog term, we address the possibility of these theories reproducing several well-known cosmological solutions. In particular when applied to a Friedmann-Lema\^itre-Robertson-Walker geometry in four-dimensional spacetime with standard fluids exclusively. We study different types of gravitational Lagrangians and reconstruct solutions provided by analytical expressions for either the cosmological scale factor or the Hubble parameter. We also show that it is possible to find Lagrangians of this type without a cosmological constant such that the behaviour of the LCDM model is precisely mimicked. In the context of f(R)=R + alpha R^2 gravity, we study the existence of neutron and quark stars with no intermediate approximations in the generalised system of Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov equations. Analysis shows that for positive alpha's the scalar curvature does not drop to zero at the star surface (as in General Relativity) but exponentially decreases with distance. Also the stellar mass bounded by star surface decreases when the value alpha increases. Nonetheless distant observers would observe a gravitational mass due to appearance of a so-called gravitational sphere around the star. The non-zero curvature contribution to the gravitational mass eventually is shown to compensate the stellar mass decrease for growing alpha's. We perform our analysis for several equations of state including purely hadronic configurations as well as hyperons and quark stars. In all cases, we assess that the relation between the parameter $\alpha$ and the gravitational mass weakly depend upon the chosen equation of state. Another interesting feature is the increase of the star radius in comparison to General Relativity for stars with masses close to maximal, whereas for intermediate masses around 1.4-1.6 solar masses, the radius of star depends upon alpha very weakly. Also the decrease in the mass bounded by star surface may cause the surface redshift to decrease in R^2-gravity when compared to Einsteinian predictions. This effect is shown to hardly depend upon the observed gravitational mass. Finally, for negative values of alpha our analysis shows that outside the star the scalar curvature has damped oscillations but the contribution of the gravitational sphere into the gravitational mass increases indefinitely with radial distance putting into question the very existence of such relativistic stars., Comment: Version published in Class. The onset of dark energy domination depends on the particular gravitational theory driving the cosmic evolution. Model independent techniques are crucial to test both the present $\Lambda$CDM cosmological paradigm and alternative theories, making the least possible number of assumptions about the Universe. In this paper we investigate whether cosmography is able to distinguish between different gravitational theories, by determining bounds on model parameters for three different extensions of General Relativity, i.e. $k-$essence, $F(T)$ and $f(R)$ theories. We expand each class of theories in powers of redshift $z$ around the present time, making no additional assumptions. This procedure is an extension of previous work and can be seen as the most general approach for testing extended theories of gravity with cosmography. In the case of $F(T)$ and $f(R)$ theories, we show that some assumptions on model parameters often made in previous works are superfluous or unjustified. We use data from the Union2.1 SN catalogue, BAO data and $H(z)$ differential age compilations, which probe cosmology on different scales. We perform a Monte Carlo analysis using a Metropolis-Hastings algorithm with a Gelman-Rubin convergence criterion, reporting 1-$\sigma$ and 2-$\sigma$ confidence levels. We perform two distinct fits, first taking only data at $z<1$ and then for all $z$. We obtain the corresponding parameter intervals, and find that the data is compatible the $\Lambda$CDM limit of all three theories at the 1-$\sigma$ level, while still compatible with quite a large portion of parameter space. We compare our results to the truncated $\Lambda$CDM paradigm, showing that the permitted regions of coefficients are significantly modified and in general widened compared to values reported in the existing literature. The cosmographic approach, which only relies upon the homogeneity and isotropy of the Universe on large scales, has become an essential tool in dealing with an increasing number of theoretical possibilities for explaining the late-time acceleration of the Universe, ranging from Modified Gravity theories to Dark Energy alternatives passing from testing the cosmological concordance Lambda-CDM model. Despite its generality, we show that this method has a number of shortcomings when trying to adequately reconstruct theories with higher-order derivatives in either the gravitational or the matter sector. We discuss the soundness of inflationary scenarios in theories beyond the Starobinsky model, namely a class of theories described by arbitrary functions of the Ricci scalar and the K-essence field. We discuss the pathologies associated with higher-order equations of motion which will be shown to constrain the stability of this class of theories. We provide a general framework to calculate the slow-roll parameters and the corresponding mappings to the theory parameters. For paradigmatic gravitational models within the class of theories under consideration we illustrate the power of the Planck/Bicep2 latest results to constrain such gravitational Lagrangians. In the context of f(R) gravity theories, we show that the apparent mass of a neutron star as seen from an observer at infinity is numerically calculable but requires careful matching, first at the star's edge, between interior and exterior solutions, none of them being totally Schwarzschild-like but presenting instead small oscillations of the curvature scalar R; and second at large radii, where the Newtonian potential is used to identify the mass of the neutron star. We find that for the same equation of state, this mass definition is always larger than its general relativistic counterpart. We exemplify this with quadratic $R^2$ and Hu-Sawicki-like modifications of the standard General Relativity action. Therefore, the finding of two-solar mass neutron stars basically imposes no constraint on stable f(R) theories. However, star radii are in general smaller than in General Relativity, which can give an observational handle on such classes of models at the astrophysical level. Both larger masses and smaller matter radii are due to much of the apparent effective energy residing in the outer metric for scalar-tensor theories. Finally, because the f(R) neutron star masses can be much larger than General Relativity counterparts, the total energy available for radiating gravitational waves could be of order several solar masses, and thus a merger of these stars constitutes an interesting wave source., Comment: 19 pages, 23 plots. Modified gravity has attracted much attention over the last few years and remains a potential candidate for dark energy. In particular, the so-called viable f(R) gravity theories, which are able to both recover General Relativity (GR) and produce late-time cosmic acceleration, have been widely studied in recent literature. Nevertheless, extended theories of gravity suffer from several shortcomings which compromise their ability to provide realistic alternatives to the standard cosmological Lambda CDM Concordance model. We address the existence of cosmological singularities and the conditions that guarantee late-time acceleration,assuming reasonable energy conditions for standard matter in the so-called Hu-Sawicki f(R) model, currently among the most widely studied modifications to General Relativity. Then using the Supernovae Ia Union 2.1 catalogue, we further constrain the free parameters of this model. In the present article we study the Inverse Electrodynamics Model. This model is a gauge and parity invariant non-linear Electrodynamics theory, which respects the conformal invariance of standard Electrodynamics. This modified Electrodynamics model, when minimally coupled to General Relativity, is compatible with static and spherically symmetric Reissner-Nordstrom-like black-hole solutions. However, these black-hole solutions present more complex thermodynamic properties than their Reissner-Nordstrom black-hole solutions counterparts in standard Electrodynamics. In particular, in the Inverse Model a new stability region, with both the heat capacity and the free energy negative, arises. Model-independent methods in cosmology has become an essential tool in order to deal with an increasing number of theoretical alternatives for explaining the late-time acceleration of the Universe. In the context of extended Teleparallel gravity theories, we address the issue of junction conditions required to guarantee the correct matching of different regions of spacetime. In the absence of shells/branes, these conditions turn out to be more restrictive than their counterparts in General Relativity as in other extended theories of gravity. In fact, the general junction conditions on the matching hypersurfaces depend on the underlying theory and a new condition on the induced tetrads in order to avoid delta-like distributions in the field equations. This result imposes strict consequences on the viability of standard solutions such as the Einstein-Straus-like construction. One possible explanation for the present observed acceleration of the Universe is the breakdown of homogeneity and isotropy due to the formation of non-linear structures. How inhomogeneities affect the averaged cosmological expansion rate and lead to late-time acceleration is generally considered to be due to some backreaction mechanism. General Relativity together with pressure-free matter have until recently been considered as the sole ingredients for averaged calculations. In this communication we focus our attention on more general scenarios, including imperfect fluids as well as alternative theories of gravity, and apply an averaging procedure to them in order to determine possible backreaction effects. For illustrative purposes, we present our results for dark energy models, quintessence and Brans-Dicke theories. Despite the extraordinary attention that modified gravity theories have attracted over the past decade, the geodesic deviation equation in this context has not received proper formulation thus far. This equation provides an elegant way to investigate the timelike, null and spacelike structure of spacetime geometries. In this investigation we provide the full derivation of this equation in situations where General Relativity has been extended in Robertson-Walker background spacetimes. We find that for null geodesics the contribution arising from the geometrical new terms is in general non-zero. Modified gravity is one of the most promising candidates for explaining the current accelerating expansion of the Universe, and even its unification with the inflationary epoch. Nevertheless, the wide range of models capable to explain the phenomena of dark energy, imposes that current research focuses on a more precise study of the possible effects of modified gravity may have on both cosmological and local levels. In this paper, we focus on the analysis of a type of modified gravity, the so-called f(R,G) gravity and we perform a deep analysis on the stability of important cosmological solutions. We study the evolution of scalar cosmological perturbations in the (1+3)- covariant gauge-invariant formalism for generic $f(R)$ theories of gravity. Extending previous works, we give a complete set of equations describing the evolution of matter and curvature fluctuations for a multi-fluid cosmological medium. We then specialize to a radiation-dust fluid described by barotropic equations of state and solve the perturbation equations around a background solution of $R^{n}$ gravity. In particular we study exact solutions for scales much smaller and much larger than the Hubble radius and show that $n>2/3$ in order to have a growth rate compatible with the M\'esz\'aros effect., Comment: 32 pages, 3 figures, published version

If the present dark matter in the Universe annihilates into Standard Model particles, it must contribute to the gamma ray fluxes detected on the Earth. The magnitude of such contribution depends on the particular dark matter candidate, but certain features of the produced spectra may be analyzed in a rather model-independent fashion. In this communication we briefly revise the complete photon spectra coming from WIMP annihilation into Standard Model particle-antiparticle pairs obtained by extensive Monte Carlo simulations and consequent fitting functions presented by Dombriz et al. in a wide range of WIMP masses. In order to illustrate the usefulness of these fitting functions, we mention how these results may be applied to the so-called brane-world theories whose fluctuations, the branons, behave as WIMPs and therefore may spontaneously annihilate in SM particles. In the context of $f(R)$ gravity theories, the issue of finding static and spherically symmetric black hole solutions is addressed. Two approaches to study the existence of such solutions are considered: first, constant curvature solutions, and second, the general case (without imposing constant curvature) is also studied. Performing a perturbative expansion around the Einstein-Hilbert action, it is found that only solutions of the Schwarzschild-(Anti-) de Sitter type are present (up to second order in perturbations) and the explicit expressions for these solutions are provided in terms of the $f(R)$ function. It has been suggested that our universe could be a 3-dimensional brane where the SM fields live embedded in a D-dimensional space-time. In flexible raneworlds, in addition to the SM fields, new degrees of freedom appear on the brane associated to brane fluctuations.
