Abstract

Tidal marshes store large amounts of organic carbon in their soils. Field data quantifying soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks provide an important resource for researchers, natural resource managers, and policy-makers working towards the protection, restoration, and valuation of these ecosystems. We collated a global dataset of tidal marsh soil organic carbon (MarSOC) from 99 studies that includes location, soil depth, site name, dry bulk density, SOC, and/or soil organic matter (SOM). The MarSOC dataset includes 17,454 data points from 2,329 unique locations, and 29 countries. We generated a general transfer function for the conversion of SOM to SOC. Using this data we estimated a median (± median absolute deviation) value of 79.2 ± 38.1 Mg SOC ha−1 in the top 30 cm and 231 ± 134 Mg SOC ha−1 in the top 1 m of tidal marsh soils globally. This data can serve as a basis for future work, and may contribute to incorporation of tidal marsh ecosystems into climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies and policies.

Abstract

Reported COVID-19 deaths in Germany are relatively low as compared to many European countries. Among the several explanations proposed, an early and large testing of the population was put forward. Most current debates on COVID-19 focus on the differences among countries, but little attention has been given to regional differences and diet. The low-death rate European countries (e.g. Austria, Baltic States, Czech Republic, Finland, Norway, Poland, Slovakia) have used different quarantine and/or confinement times and methods and none have performed as many early tests as Germany. Among other factors that may be significant are the dietary habits. It seems that some foods largely used in these countries may reduce angiotensin-converting enzyme activity or are anti-oxidants. Among the many possible areas of research, it might be important to understand diet and angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE2) levels in populations with different COVID-19 death rates since dietary interventions may be of great benefit.

Abstract

Mycobacteriophages - viruses of mycobacterial hosts - are genetically diverse but morphologically are all classified in the Caudovirales with double-stranded DNA and tails. We describe here a group of five closely related mycobacteriophages - Corndog, Catdawg, Dylan, Firecracker, and YungJamal - designated as Cluster O with long flexible tails but with unusual prolate capsids. Proteomic analysis of phage Corndog particles, Catdawg particles, and Corndog-infected cells confirms expression of half of the predicted gene products and indicates a non-canonical mechanism for translation of the Corndog tape measure protein. Bioinformatic analysis identifies 8-9 strongly predicted SigA promoters and all five Cluster O genomes contain more than 30 copies of a 17 bp repeat sequence with dyad symmetry located throughout the genomes. Comparison of the Cluster O phages provides insights into phage genome evolution including the processes of gene flux by horizontal genetic exchange.

Abstract

Comprehensive geotechnical characterisation was undertaken at the mine to investigate the rock mass strength properties of the primary copper ore. The rock can be considered as a heavily veined massive and unfractured rock mass. Structural data analysis was carried out to construct a discrete fracture network to represent the rock structure of the stockwork veins. A discrete fracture network was built for each geotechnical unit. Based on the structural analysis it was possible to obtain the weak vein volumetric intensity, P32, of each unit and to determine the in situ fragmentation of the primary rock mass. A new geotechnical zonation was obtained based on the occurrence of weak veins which provided better agreement with the rock mass behaviour at the mine site than previous fragmentation and seismicity approaches. The P32 values for weak veins were in the range 2m2/m3-15 m2/m3, which represented a small percentage of the stockwork veins of the primary rock mass, while the P32 values relating to fault intensity were in the range 0.15m2/m3-0.40 m2/m3. Laboratory tests were carried out on rock and vein samples of primary ore and standard direct shear tests and non-conventional tensile tests combined with scaling procedures were undertaken to investigate the vein strength properties. The information was used in the synthetic rock mass modelling approach to study the strength and deformation behaviour of the main geotechnical units. The macroscopic behaviour of a synthetic rock mass sample depends on both the creation of new fractures through intact material and slip/opening of pre-existing joints. Synthetic rock mass standard tests showed acceptable results in scaling vein macro-parameters to the average length within the discrete fracture network. Abstract

The d(C-G-T-A-C-epsilon C-C-A-T-G-C).d(G-C-A-T-G-A-G-T-A-C-G) oligodeoxynucleotide duplex containing the 3, N4-etheno-2'-deoxycytidine adduct positioned opposite 2'-deoxyadenosine in the center of the helix has been analyzed by proton NMR spectroscopy and restrained molecular dynamics. The spectroscopic data establish a right-handed duplex, with sugar puckers in the C2'-endo/C3'-exo range, residues adopting an anti conformation around the glycosidic torsion angle and, with the exception of epsilon C.dA, Watson-Crick hydrogen bond alignment for all base pairs. Molecular dynamics simulations, restrained by the full relaxation matrix approach, produced a three-dimensional model with an NMR R-factor of 7%. The duplex structure shows no significant perturbation of the sugar-phosphate backbone, which remains in B-form. The exocyclic adduct and its partner dA are incorporated into the helix without producing a noticeable kink. The epsilon C.dA alignment adopts a staggered conformation with each residue displaced toward the 5'-terminus and intercalated between bases on the opposite strand, without increase of inter-phosphate distances. The partial intercalation of the epsilon C (anti).dA(anti) alignment allows stacking between the aromatic rings of epsilon C and dA and with base pairs adjacent to the lesion, suggesting an important role played by hydrophobic forces in the stabilization of the solution structure.

34. Detección de la progresión de la retinopatía externa oculta zonal aguda (AZOOR) con angiografía por tomografía de coherencia óptica: reporte de un caso

Abstract

Mujer de 48años con escotomas superotemporales persistentes y fotopsias de 2meses de evolución y zonas despigmentadas en retina de ambos ojos con patrón trizonal en imagen multimodal. La resonancia magnética cerebral, la tomografía por emisión de positrones, los anticuerpos antirretinianos y los marcadores inmunológicos, infecciosos y tumorales fueron negativos, por lo que se diagnosticó retinopatía externa oculta zonal aguda. La paciente fue tratada con adalimumab. Sin embargo, 19meses después los síntomas aumentaron y se detectó progresión en la angiografía por tomografía de coherencia óptica, así como también en la prueba de campo visual Humphrey y el electrorretinograma, por lo que se agregó micofenolato de mofetilo, mostrando mejoría y estabilización de la enfermedad durante un seguimiento de 4años.

40. Successful inoculation of Artemia and production of cysts in man-made salterns in the Philippines

Abstract

The objective of the inoculation described in this paper was to test the feasibility of culturing Artemia in man-made earthen salterns and of producing adults and cysts for use in aquaculture projects in the Philippines. San Francisco Bay (California, USA) Artemia were inoculated in two concrete tanks and in four earthen ponds which are part of a small local salt factory. It was found that Artemia can be grown (with continuous production of nauplii and cysts) year-round in covered concrete tanks and in open concrete tanks and earthen ponds during the dry season (February to June). Lethal effects of too high water temperatures (>35°C) to the cultures were anticipated by the use of green coconut fronds placed on the water surface alongside the walls of the tanks and the earthen dikes. Rice bran enriched with vitamins and traces of minerals appeared to be a good food for Artemia cultured in aerated concrete tanks: in the earthen salt ponds the brine shrimp grew well on the natural food present. Over a 3 month production period, 26 kg dry weight cysts and 150 kg live weight adults have been harvested from a total surface of 1.7 ha of salt ponds and brine tanks.

Abstract

There are large between- and within-country variations in COVID-19 death rates. Some very low death rate settings such as Eastern Asia, Central Europe, the Balkans and Africa have a common feature of eating large quantities of fermented foods whose intake is associated with the activation of the Nrf2 (Nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2) anti-oxidant transcription factor. There are many Nrf2-interacting nutrients (berberine, curcumin, epigallocatechin gallate, genistein, quercetin, resveratrol, sulforaphane) that all act similarly to reduce insulin resistance, endothelial damage, lung injury and cytokine storm. They also act on the same mechanisms (mTOR: Mammalian target of rapamycin, PPARγ:Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor, NFκB: Nuclear factor kappa B, ERK: Extracellular signal-regulated kinases and eIF2α:Elongation initiation factor 2α). They may as a result be important in mitigating the severity of COVID-19, acting through the endoplasmic reticulum stress or ACE-Angiotensin-II-AT1R axis (AT1R) pathway. Many Nrf2-interacting nutrients are also interacting with TRPA1 and/or TRPV1. Interestingly, geographical areas with very low COVID-19 mortality are those with the lowest prevalence of obesity (Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia). It is tempting to propose that Nrf2-interacting foods and nutrients can re-balance insulin resistance and have a significant effect on COVID-19 severity. It is therefore possible that the intake of these foods may restore an optimal natural balance for the Nrf2 pathway and may be of interest in the mitigation of COVID-19 severity.

46. Catalytic Oxidation of Acetone over MnO x -SiO 2 Catalysts: An Effective Approach to Valorize Rice Husk Waste.

Abstract

Rice husk, a byproduct of rice production, poses significant environmental challenges due to disposal issues, while the emission of volatile organic compounds into the atmosphere further exacerbates these concerns. This study addresses both problems by exploring the potential of texturally enhanced SiO 2 , derived from Uruguayan rice husk, as a catalytic support for manganese oxides in the combustion of volatile organic compounds. SiO 2 was synthesized from rice husk ash using a sustainable, acid-free pretreatment method, yielding a notably high silica purity of 96.5%-a level comparable to or exceeding previously reported values, highlighting the high silica quality inherent in Uruguayan rice husk. The catalytic activity was evaluated using acetone as a model volatile organic compound, achieving up to 90% conversion with 30 wt.% manganese oxide at 300 °C, with CO 2 as the primary product. Furthermore, a 24 h stability test demonstrated consistent performance, maintaining a conversion rate of around 95.6 ± 2.5%. These findings suggest that high-purity SiO 2 derived from Uruguayan rice husk, with its sustainability benefits, offers an effective solution for acetone removal when supporting an active phase such as manganese oxides, addressing both rice husk disposal and volatile organic compound emissions.

Abstract

Epilepsy is characterized by a sustained depolarization and repeated discharge of neurons, attributed to overstimulation of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDAr). Herein, we propose that probenecid (PROB), an inhibitor of the activity of some ATP binding-cassette transporters (ABC-transporters) can modify NMDAr activity and expression in amygdaloid kindled model. Some studies have suggested that NMDAr expression could be regulated by inhibiting the activity of P-glycoprotein (MDR1) and drug resistance protein-1 (MRP1). Besides, PROB was found to interact with other proteins with proven activity in the kindling model, such as TRPV2 channels, OAT1, and Panx1. Administering PROB at two doses (100 and 300 mg/kg/d) for 5 d decreased after-discharge duration and Racine behavioral scores. It also reduced the expression of NR2B and the activity of total NOS and the expression of nNOS with respect to the kindling group. In a second protocol, voltage-clamp measurements of NMDA-evoked currents were performed in CA1 hippocampal cells dissociated from control and kindled rats. PROB produced a dose-dependent reduction in NMDA-evoked currents. In neurons from kindled rats, a residual NMDA-evoked current was registered with respect to control animals, while a reduction in NMDA-evoked currents was observed in the presence of 20 mM PROB. Finally, we evaluated the expression of MRP1 and MDR1 in order to establish a relationship between the reduction of kindling parameters, the inhibition of NMDA-type currents, and the expression of these transporters. Based on our results, we conclude that at the concentrations used, PROB inhibits currents evoked by NMDA in dissociated neurons of control and kindled rats. In the kindling model, at the tested doses, PROB decreases the after-discharge duration and Racine behavioral score in the kindling model. We propose a mechanism that could be dependent on the expression of ABC-type transporters., (© 2024. 48. Planning for Your Advance Care Needs (PLAN): A Communication Intervention to Improve Advance Care Planning among Latino Patients with Advanced Cancer.

Abstract

Background: The goal of this study was to develop and optimize an intervention designed to address barriers to engagement in advance care planning (ACP) among Latino patients with advanced cancer. The resulting intervention, titled Planning Your Advance Care Needs (PLAN), is grounded in theoretical models of communication competence and sociocultural theory., Materials and Methods: An initial version of the PLAN manual was developed based on a prior intervention, Ca-HELP, that was designed to improve communication around pain among cancer patients. PLAN uses this framework to coach patients on how to plan for and communicate their end-of-life care needs through ACP. In the present study, feedback was obtained from key stakeholders ( n = 11 patients, n = 11 caregivers, n = 10 experts) on this preliminary version of the PLAN manual. Participants provided ratings of acceptability and feedback around the intervention content, format, design, modality, and delivery through quantitative survey questions and semi-structured qualitative interviews., Results: Results indicated that the PLAN manual was perceived to be helpful and easy to understand. All stakeholder groups liked the inclusion of explicit communication scripts and guidance for having conversations about ACP with loved ones and doctors. Specific feedback was given to modify PLAN to ensure it was optimized and tailored for Latino patients. Some patients noted reviewing the manual motivated engagement in ACP., Conclusions: Feedback from stakeholders resulted in an optimized, user-centered version of PLAN tailored to Latino patients. Future research will examine the acceptability, feasibility, and potential efficacy of this intervention to improve engagement in ACP.

49. Mercury intoxication and ophthalmic involvement: An update review.

Abstract

Human intoxication after mercury exposure is a rare condition that can cause severe damage to the central nervous, respiratory, cardiovascular, renal, gastrointestinal, skin, and visual systems and represents a major public health concern. Ophthalmic involvement includes impaired function of the extraocular muscles and the eyelids, as well as structural changes in the ocular surface, lens, retina, and optic nerve causing a potential irreversible damage to the visual system. Although, there are many pathways for poisoning depending on the mercury form, it has been suggested that tissue distribution does not differ in experimental animals when administered as mercury vapor, organic mercury, or inorganic mercury. Additionally, visual function alterations regarding central visual acuity, color discrimination, contrast sensitivity, visual field and electroretinogram responses have also been described widely. Nevertheless, there is still controversy about whether visual manifestations occur secondary to brain damage or as a direct affectation, and which ocular structure is primarily affected. Despite the use of some imaging techniques such as in vivo confocal microscopy of the cornea, optical coherence tomography (OCT) of the retina and optic nerve, and functional tests such as electroretinography has helped to solve in part this debate, further studies incorporating other imaging modalities such as autofluorescence, OCT angiography or adaptive optics retinal imaging are needed.
