INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of neural tube defects (NTDs) is higher in Ethiopia than most other countries, and ~84% of Ethiopian women of reproductive age (WRA) have folate insufficiency, a major risk factor for NTDs. Salt fortification with folic acid is a potential strategy to improve womens folate status, but data are needed on the acceptability, nutritional impact and safety of folic acid fortification of iodised salt. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The study is designed as a community-based, household-randomised, dose-response trial. A total of 360 non-pregnant WRA 18-49 years of age will be randomly assigned to one of three intervention arms: (1) iodised salt fortified with 30 ppm folic acid to provide ~200 µg folic acid/day; (2) iodised salt fortified with 90 ppm folic acid to provide ~600 µg folic acid/day; or (3) iodised salt (comparator). The preweighed salts will be delivered to participants homes biweekly for 26 weeks; unused salt will be collected and weighed. Fasting, venous blood samples will be collected at baseline, end line and a randomly assigned intermediate time point for assessment of folate, iodine, vitamin B12 and other micronutrient status biomarkers. Womens dietary intakes, including discretionary salt consumption, will be measured using weighed food records; 24-hour urine specimens will be analysed for sodium and iodine excretion. Primary outcomes are womens consumption of study salts, change in biomarkers of folate and iodine status and prevalence of adverse events. Results will be analysed using analysis of covariance models to estimate group mean differences for continuous outcomes, controlling for baseline measurements, and log-binomial or modified Poisson regressions for categorical outcomes. Prespecified effect modifications will be explored. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The study has been approved by the Ethiopian Public Health Institutes Institutional Review Board, and the protocol has been registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (registration number NCT06223854). Salt (NaCl), is an essential nutrient for survival, while excessive salt can be detrimental. In the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, internal taste organs in the pharynx are critical gatekeepers impacting the decision to accept or reject a food. Currently, our understanding of the mechanism through which pharyngeal gustatory receptor neurons (GRNs) sense high salt are rudimentary. Here, we found that a member of the ionotropic receptor family, Ir60b, is expressed exclusively in a pair of GRNs activated by high salt. Using a two-way choice assay (DrosoX) to measure ingestion volume, we demonstrate that IR60b and two co-receptors IR25a and IR76b are required to prevent high salt consumption. Mutants lacking external taste organs but retaining the internal taste organs in the pharynx exhibit much higher salt avoidance than flies with all taste organs but missing the three IRs. Our findings highlight the vital role for IRs in a pharyngeal GRN to control ingestion of high salt.

ABSTRACT Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common chronic autoimmune disorder with an incompletely elucidated pathogenesis. Emerging research indicates that dietary factors may significantly influence the onset and progression of RA. Nevertheless, the causal relationship between dietary habits and RA remains ambiguous. This investigation employed a multivariable Mendelian randomization (MVMR) methodology to rigorously assess the potential causal effects of various dietary factors on RA risk. This study utilized genome‐wide association study (GWAS) summary‐level data, encompassing dietary preferences (n = 113,425–159,579), and RA data (n = 302,614) from the most recent FinnGen database. The primary causal analysis was conducted using inverse‐variance weighting (IVW), complemented by MR‐Egger, weighted median, Bayesian weighted Mendelian randomization, and Robust Adjusted Profile Score (RAPS) methodologies. Sensitivity analyses incorporated Cochran's Q test, MR‐Egger intercept test, MR‐PRESSO, and leave‐one‐out analysis. Steiger tests were employed to evaluate the identified dietary preferences. MVMR was utilized to assess the direct impact of dietary factors on RA. The study identified significant associations between RA and nine dietary preferences: F‐lentils/beans liking (Fle), chips liking (Chips), coffee difference liking (CD), coffee with sugar liking (CWS), milk chocolate liking (MC), coriander liking (Coriander), pollock liking (Pollock), soft cheese liking (SC), and blue cheese liking (BC). The MVMR analysis indicated that genetically predicted coriander and MC have a direct impact on RA, independent of other dietary factors. This study presents novel causal evidence suggesting that dietary preferences may impact the risk of RA. Specifically, a reduction in the consumption of milk chocolate and coriander may contribute to the prevention and alleviation of RA. Objective To evaluating the relationship between oxidation balance score (OBS) and sarcopenia. Methods The analysis was based on data from 8,156 participants from the 2011-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in the United States. OBS was calculated comprehensively based on 16 dietary factors and 4 lifestyle factors. Sarcopenia was determined by the ratio of appendicular skeletal muscle mass to body mass index. Weighted multivariate logistic regression analysis and restricted cubic splines were used to explore the relationship between OBS and sarcopenia. Subgroup analyses were used to explore the effect of gender on both. Results Among all participants, OBS, dietary OBS, and lifestyle OBS were negatively associated with sarcopenia. Compared to the lowest quartile group, the highest quartile group of OBS, dietary OBS, and lifestyle OBS had the risk of sarcopenia reduced by 69% [0.31 (0.21, 0.47)], 56% [0.44 (0.30, 0.63)], and 64% [0.36 (0.24, 0.53)] respectively. Restricted cubic splines further demonstrated the nonlinear relationship between OBS, dietary OBS, and lifestyle OBS with sarcopenia. Chlorella vulgaris, a freshwater microalga, is gaining attention for its potential as a nutritious food source and dietary supplement. This review aims to provide a comprehensive discussion on C. vulgaris, evaluating its viability as a food substitute in the industry by exploring the nutritional value and application of C. vulgaris in the food industry. Rich in protein, lipids, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals, Chlorella offers substantial nutritional benefits, positioning it as a valuable food substitute. Its applications in the food industry include incorporation into smoothies, snacks, and supplements, enhancing the nutritional profile of various food products. The health benefits of Chlorella encompass antioxidant activity, immune system support, and detoxification, contributing to overall well‐being. Despite these advantages, the commercialization of Chlorella faces significant challenges. These include variability in antibacterial activity due to strain and growth conditions, high production costs, contamination risks, and sensory issues such as unpleasant taste and smell. Additionally, Chlorella can accumulate heavy metals from its environment, necessitating stringent quality control measures. Future prospects involve improving Chlorella strains through genetic manipulation to enhance nutrient content, developing cost‐effective culture systems, and exploring advanced processing techniques like pulsed electric fields for better digestibility. Addressing sensory issues through flavor‐masking strategies and employing environmental management practices will further support Chlorella's integration into the food industry. Although C. vulgaris shows great potential as a nutritious food ingredient, overcoming existing challenges and optimizing production methods would be crucial for its successful adoption and widespread use. Patients with heart failure (HF) often experience iron deficiency. Intravenous iron supplementation has been widely used in clinical practice to facilitate the treatment of HF. However, the association between dietary iron intake and HF still needs to be elucidated. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of dietary iron intake on HF in American adults. The data were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009–2018. Iron dietary intake data were obtained from two 24-h dietary recall interviews. We examined baseline data and HF prevalence in different quartile groups of dietary iron intake (Q1–Q4). Two logistic regression models were established to evaluate the impact of Q4 (highest iron consumption) on the risk of HF. The study included 20,853 American adults (age ≥ 20 years). The participants with the highest iron intake (Q4) had the lowest prevalence of HF (Q1: 3.25%, Q2: 2.18%, Q3: 1.92%, Q4: 1.72%; P < 0.001). After adjusting for possible confounding factors, the highest iron intake (Q4) was significantly associated with a reduced risk of HF compared with that of Q1 (odds ratio 0.58, 95% confidence interval 0.41–0.82; P = 0.003). This association remained stable in subgroups of women, current smokers, and Hispanics other than Mexican Americans. This study revealed that the dietary intake of iron was negatively associated with HF in adults without exceeding the tolerable maximum daily intake of 45 mg/day. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To explore the association between the Oxidative Balance Score (OBS), which represents the balance of multiple oxidative stress-related dietary and lifestyle exposures, and the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Methods: A population-based cross-sectional study design was adopted and 16,850 participants in NHANES database were included in the statistics analysis stage. The OBS was constructed by combining information from 20 a priori selected pro- and antioxidant factors. Weighted logistic regression and restricted cubic splines (RCS) were used to estimate the association between OBS and MetS. Results: Participants in the highest OBS quartile, indicating low oxidative stress (OS) levels, exhibited a significantly lower risk of MetS (odds Ratio [OR] = 0.55, 95% confidence Interval [CI]: 0.47–0.64) compared to the lowest quartile. Specifically, higher OBS was inversely associated with abdominal obesity (OR = 0.61, 95% CI: 0.54–0.69), hypertension (OR = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.58–0.83), elevated triglycerides (OR = 0.68, 95% CI: 0.57–0.82), low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels (OR = 0.60, 95% CI: 0.50–0.70) and fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels (OR = 0.74, 95% CI: 0.62–0.88). The observed inverse association between OBS and hypertension or FBG levels appeared to primarily influenced by BMI. The association between dietary OBS intervals and elevated FBG levels was not statistically significant in men, whereas the risk was lower by 25% in women. Conclusions: A higher OBS, representing a balance of multiple oxidative stress-related dietary and lifestyle exposures, is associated with a lower risk of MetS. Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of nutritional interventions (i.e. nutritional support, dietary patterns and dietary supplements) on cognitive function in cancer survivors. Design: Systematic review. Methods: A systematic and comprehensive search of PubMed, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, Embase, and CINAHL was conducted from the inception until March 10, 2023. The last search was conducted on December 10, 2023. Reporting Method: PRISMA. Results: A total of 59 randomized controlled trials were included for analysis. Nutritional support, dietary patterns and dietary supplements improved cognitive function in cancer survivors with no apparent safety concerns. The anti‐inflammatory diet, the fasting‐mimicking diet and the web‐based diet significantly improved cognitive function. Whereas the ketogenic diet or dietary advice to consume more soluble dietary fibres and less insoluble dietary fibres and lactose could not. There was evidence from dietary supplements to support the beneficial effects of polyunsaturated fatty acid supplements, traditional herbal medicines and other supplements. Conclusions: Nutritional interventions have great promise for improving cognitive function in adult cancer survivors. Further validation of the nutritional interventions supported in this study in other survivors and exploration of more effective nutritional interventions are needed. Implications for the Profession and/or Patient Care: This work can support the construction of nutritional support interventions and dietary guidance programs to prevent cancer‐related cognitive decline. Sleep disorders significantly impact the quality of life for many individuals, which remain largely unrecognized. It is widely believed that dietary nutrient intake plays a crucial role in promoting healthy sleep patterns. However, there is lack of research focusing on cancer survivors. This study utilized the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database to investigate the correlation between dietary nutrient intake and sleep disorders in cancer survivors. Analyzing data from 2882 cancer survivors in NHANES spanning from 2005 to 2018. Dietary nutrient intake was evaluated through two 24-h dietary recalls. Weighted multivariable logistic regression model was employed to further applied to explore the association between dietary fiber intake and sleep disorders while controlling for relevant confounding factors. Additionally, the nonlinear and dose–response relationships were explored using restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression along with smooth curve fitting and threshold effect analysis. Stratified analysis and interaction analysis were conducted to assess the consistency of the results. Univariable and multivariable analysis demonstrated that dietary fiber intake showed negative correlation with sleep disorders (P < 0.05). Treating dietary fiber intake as continuous variable. After accounting for all covariates, the study reaffirmed the protective role of dietary fiber (odds ratio [OR]: 0.99, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.98–0.99, P = 0.044). Analysis of dietary fiber intake in quartiles further supported this trend (P < 0.001). Interestingly, further investigations indicated that dietary fiber intake was not associated with sleep apnea, insomnia, restless legs syndrome, or other types of sleep disorders (P > 0.05). Notably, no statistically significant interactions were observed in all subgroup analyses except poverty income ratio (PIR) (P for interaction < 0.05), indicating that the protective effect of dietary fiber on sleep disorders was more pronounced in individuals with PIR ≥ 2.5. Aim: This study aimed to investigate the causes and risk factors of colorectal cancer (CRC) in a Turkish population, focusing on various modifiable and nonmodifiable risk factors. Methods: A hospital-based case-control design was employed to compare individuals with CRC (cases) to individuals without CRC (controls). Male and female participants were recruited from the surgery, internal medicine, and outpatient departments. The study encompassed socio-demographic data, clinical information, radiological diagnoses, and biochemical measurements. Univariable and multivariable logistic regressions were used to determine associated risk factors of CRC. Results: The study included 704 individuals with CRC and 704 controls. Significant socio-demographic disparities were observed between the groups, with over 30% of the cases having lower levels of education and income compared to the controls. Lifestyle factors such as obesity, higher rates of smoking (cigarettes and hookah) and alcohol consumption were more prevalent among cases than controls. Further significant associations were identified with intestinal inflammation, obesity, processed food consumption, and symptoms such as abdominal pain, cramps, diarrhea, constipation, blood in stool, bloating, irritable bowel syndrome, nausea/vomiting, anemia, stress, fatigue, weakness, and weight loss. Diet analysis revealed that individuals with CRC consumed more red meat, processed and fast foods along with less pulses and vegetables. Genetic predispositions and exposure to chemicals also correlated strongly with increased CRC risk. Multivariable regression analysis identified, nausea/vomiting, constipation, intestinal disease, genetics factor, hookah-nargileh use, history of any cancer, family history of bowel cancer, constipation, cigarette smoking, stress, milk-yogurt consumption, obesity and red meat consumption as significant determinants for CRC. Conclusion: CRC risk is influenced by dietary, lifestyle, and genetic factors. Awareness of hereditary risk and participation in screening are crucial. ABSTRACT Background Aims Methods Results Conclusion Anxiety and depression are associated strongly with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Dietary therapies are used increasingly in the management of IBS, but the impact of common mental disorders on response to these has not been well studied.To examine whether symptoms compatible with common mental disorders influence response to dietary interventions.Prospective cohort study of adults, with either diarrhoea‐predominant or mixed bowel habits, IBS Severity Scoring System [IBS‐SSS] score ≥ 75 points. Participants completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression score (HADS) and attended initially for British Dietary Association advice for IBS. IBS‐SSS was re‐checked 3 months later to assess response. If primary endpoint (≥ 50 point decrease in IBS‐SSS) was not achieved, patients were offered low fermentable oligo‐, di‐ and monosaccharides and polyol diet and repeated IBS‐SSS after another 3 months. Secondary endpoints included of change in IBS‐SSS and effect of symptom severity on response.In total, 448 patients took part, average age of 42 years and 79.0% were female. 69.9% of participants had HADS‐A scores ≥ 8 and 39.3% with HADS‐D scores ≥ 8. Average IBS‐SSS score at baseline was 290 (SD 86). No significant difference was noted in achievement of the primary endpoint according to HADS‐A scores (53.4% vs. 62.2% by ITT in those with HADS‐A ≥ 8 vs. HADS‐A < 8, p = 0.09). Patients with HADS‐D ≥ 8 were significantly less likely to achieve the primary endpoint compared with those with HADS‐D < 8 (43.8% vs. 64.0% by ITT, p < 0.01).Understanding psychological profile of patients can help predicting their response to IBS dietary interventions. Present study aimed to evaluate the dietary impact of commercial zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) on the growth performance of commercially important fish fingerlings. A 90-days feeding trial was carried out to evaluate the impact of dietary supplementation of commercial ZnO-NPs on the growth performance and survival rate of commercially important fish of carp family-rohu (Labeo rohita) fingerlings (2.23±0.38g in average weight and 5.74±0.28 cm in average length). ZnONPs (Sigma-India) supplemented feed was prepared at a concentration (10, 100, 200 mg/kg) and experimental fish fingerlings were exposed for 90 days. Mid-term, fish fingerlings were randomly sampled every 30 days from both the dietary exposed and unexposed groups to assess growth parameters, including weight gain (WG), weight gain percentage (WG%), specific growth rate (SGR), and feed conversion ratio (FCR). After 90 days of feeding, the results indicated that the ZnO inclusion diet at a concentration of 100 mg/kg significantly improved growth performance, with a weight gain of 5.50±0.51g, weight gain percentage of 143.6±53.22%, and FCR of 1.41±0.32, compared to other treatment and control groups. Intestinal absorption is an important contributor to systemic cholesterol homeostasis. Niemann-Pick C1 Like 1 (NPC1L1) assists in the initial step of dietary cholesterol uptake, but how cholesterol moves downstream of NPC1L1 is unknown. We show that Aster-B and Aster-C are critical for nonvesicular cholesterol movement in enterocytes. Loss of NPC1L1 diminishes accessible plasma membrane (PM) cholesterol and abolishes Aster recruitment to the intestinal brush border. Enterocytes lacking Asters accumulate PM cholesterol and show endoplasmic reticulum cholesterol depletion. Aster-deficient mice have impaired cholesterol absorption and are protected against diet-induced hypercholesterolemia. Finally, the Aster pathway can be targeted with a small-molecule inhibitor to manipulate cholesterol uptake. These findings identify the Aster pathway as a physiologically important and pharmacologically tractable node in dietary lipid absorption.

Abstract While selenium is a cofactor of several antioxidant enzymes against cancer and is essential for human health, its excess intake may also be harmful. Though a safe intake of selenium has recently been recommended, it is not well understood in the Asian population. We aimed to determine the association between dietary intake of selenium and cancer risk in a case–control study of 3758 incident cancer cases (i.e., stomach, colon, rectum, lung cancers, and other sites) and 2929 control subjects in Vietnam. Daily intake of selenium was derived from a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. The unconditional logistic regression model was used to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between selenium intake and cancer risk. We observed a U-shaped association between selenium intake and cancer risk. A safe intake ranged from 110.8 to 124.4 µg/day (mean 117.8 µg/day). Compared to individuals with the safe intake of selenium, individuals with the lowest intake (i.e., 27.8–77.2 µg/day) were associated with an increased risk of cancer (OR = 3.78, 95% CI 2.89–4.95) and those with the highest intake (169.1–331.7 µg/day) also had an increased cancer risk (OR = 1.86, 95% CI 1.45–2.39). Abstract Generally, a person’s life span depends on their food consumption because it may cause deadly diseases like colorectal cancer (CRC). In 2020, colorectal cancer accounted for one million fatalities globally, representing 10% of all cancer casualties. 76,679 males and 78,213 females over the age of 59 from ten states in the United States participated in this analysis. During follow-up, 1378 men and 981 women were diagnosed with colon cancer. This prospective cohort study used 231 food items and their variants as input features to identify CRC patients. Before labelling any foods as colorectal cancer-causing foods, it is ethical to analyse facts like how many grams of food should be consumed daily and how many times a week. This research examines five classification algorithms on real-time datasets: K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN), Decision Tree (DT), Random Forest (RF), Logistic Regression with Classifier Chain (LRCC), and Logistic Regression with Label Powerset (LRLC). Then, the SMOTE algorithm is applied to deal with and identify imbalances in the data. Our study shows that eating more than 10 g/d of low-fat butter in bread (RR 1.99, CI 0.91–4.39) and more than twice a week (RR 1.49, CI 0.93–2.38) increases CRC risk. Concerning beef, eating in excess of 74 g of beef steak daily (RR 0.88, CI 0.50–1.55) and having it more than once a week (RR 0.88, CI 0.62–1.23) decreases the risk of CRC, respectively. While eating beef and dairy products in a daily diet should be cautious about quantity. Consuming those items in moderation on a regular basis will protect us against CRC risk. Meanwhile, a high intake of poultry (RR 0.2, CI 0.05–0.81), fish (RR 0.82, CI 0.31–2.16), and pork (RR 0.67, CI 0.17–2.65) consumption negatively correlates to CRC hazards.

Abstract Background Approximately one-third of US young adults (18–25 years) have obesity, and there are calls to help young adults lose weight to prevent weight-related chronic conditions. This pilot trial tested the feasibility and acceptability of a very low-carbohydrate (VLC) eating pattern, with supportive positive affect and mindful eating skills, for weight management among young females with obesity. Methods In a single-arm trial, women (N = 17), aged 19–23, with obesity participated in a 4-month diet and lifestyle intervention. Participants were taught how to follow a VLC eating pattern with the help of a coach and 16 weekly web-based sessions. We assessed feasibility and acceptability through session participation, outcome collection, intervention satisfaction, and adverse events. Results Seventeen participants enrolled and 14 (82%) reported body weight at 4 months. Fifteen participants (94% of those beginning the intervention) viewed at least one session, and 8/15 (53%) of these participants were active in the intervention, viewing at least half of the sessions. Among the nine participants who provided 4-month self-report information, intervention satisfaction was high (mean 5.89/7, 95% CI 4.59 to 7.19). Among participants with a 4-month body weight, 7/14 (50%) lost ≥ 5% of their body weight, and of those who were also active in the intervention, 6/7 (86%) lost ≥ 5% of their body weight. There were no serious adverse events. Conclusions The results of this pilot study suggest that a VLC eating pattern may be a feasible and acceptable approach for weight loss in some young women with obesity. Abstract Background Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with DNA methylation and lifestyle. The effects of DNA methylation on GDM, and the interaction between DNA methylation and lifestyle factors are not well elucidated. The objective of this study was to explore the association between GDM, DNA methylation and lifestyle factors. Methods A nest case-control design was performed. Sociodemographic data, dietary intake and daily physical activity information of pregnant women were collected. Bisulfate pyrosequencing was used to detect the DNA methylation level of PPARGC1A, HLA-DQA1, and ADCY3 genes. The differences of DNA methylation levels between the GDM group and the control group were compared. The correlation between clinical characteristics, dietary, physical activity and DNA methylation level was analyzed. Results A total of 253 pregnant women were enrolled, of which, 60 participants (GDM: 30; control: 30) were included in the final analysis. There were no significant differences in DNA methylation levels of six methylated sites between the two groups in this study (P > 0.05). Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is the most common anxiety disorder in primary care, affecting approximately 7% of US adults. Probiotics have been found to alleviate symptoms in GAD, but the relationship between dietary live microbes and GAD remains unclear. Our aim is to determine the relationship between the dietary live microbe consumption and GAD. We included 54 GAD patients from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and selected controls using a 1:4 propensity score matching. The diagnosis of GAD was based on the fourth edition of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The live microbe intake was calculated based on expert-specified estimates of food [low (Lo), < 104 CFU/g; medium (Med), 104–107 CFU/g; or high (Hi), > 107 CFU/g].We observed a significant reduction in Med foods intake among GAD patients compared with controls (OR: 0.44, CI: 0.21–0.92, p = 0.03), also lower household income. Additionally, higher intake of Med foods correlated with a lower risk of GAD in males (OR: 0.26, CI: 0.08–0.84, p = 0.03), individuals with ≤ High school education (OR: 0.37, CI: 0.14–0.95, p = 0.04), non-hypertensive participants (OR: 0.37, CI: 0.16–0.87, p = 0.02), and drinkers (OR: 0.41, CI: 0.19–0.89, p = 0.03). Consuming more Med foods like fruits and vegetables may be a protective factor for GAD and could aid in future dietary management. While selenium is a cofactor of several antioxidant enzymes against cancer and is essential for human health, its excess intake may also be harmful. Though a safe intake of selenium has recently been recommended, it is not well understood in the Asian population. We aimed to determine the association between dietary intake of selenium and cancer risk in a case–control study of 3758 incident cancer cases (i.e., stomach, colon, rectum, lung cancers, and other sites) and 2929 control subjects in Vietnam. Daily intake of selenium was derived from a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. The unconditional logistic regression model was used to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between selenium intake and cancer risk. We observed a U-shaped association between selenium intake and cancer risk. A safe intake ranged from 110.8 to 124.4 µg/day (mean 117.8 µg/day). Compared to individuals with the safe intake of selenium, individuals with the lowest intake (i.e., 27.8–77.2 µg/day) were associated with an increased risk of cancer (OR = 3.78, 95% CI 2.89–4.95) and those with the highest intake (169.1–331.7 µg/day) also had an increased cancer risk (OR = 1.86, 95% CI 1.45–2.39). A U-shaped pattern of association between selenium intake and cancer risk was stronger among participants with body mass index (BMI) < 23 kg/m2 and never smokers than BMI ≥ 23 kg/m2 and ever smokers (P’sheterogeneity = 0.003 and 0.021, respectively) but found in both never and ever-drinkers of alcohol (Pheterogeneity = 0.001). A U-shaped association between selenium intake and cancer risk was seen in cancer sites of the stomach, colon, rectum, and lung cancers. In summary, we found a U-shaped association between selenium intake and cancer risk and a safe selenium intake (mean: 117.8 µg/day) in the Vietnamese population. Diabetes is a metabolic disorder whose prevalence has become a worrying condition in recent decades. Chronic diabetes can result in serious health conditions such as impaired kidney function, stroke, blindness, and myocardial infarction. Despite a variety of currently available treatments, cases of diabetes and its complications are on the rise. This review article provides a comprehensive account of the ameliorative effect of prebiotics and probiotics individually or in combination i.e. synbiotics on health complications induced by Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). Recent advances in the field underscore encouraging outcomes suggesting the consumption of synbiotics leads to favorable changes in the gut microbiota. These changes result in the production of bioactive metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids (crucial for lowering blood sugar levels), reducing inflammation, preventing insulin resistance, and encouraging the release of glucagon-like peptide-1 in the host. Notably, novel strategies supplementing synbiotics to support gut microbiota are gaining attraction as pivotal interventions in mitigating T2DM-induced health complications. Thus, by nurturing a symbiotic relationship between prebiotics and probiotics i.e. synbiotics, these interventions hold promise in reshaping the microbial landscape of the gut thereby offering a multifaceted approach to managing T2DM and its associated morbidities. Supporting the potential of synbiotics underscores a paradigm shift toward holistic and targeted interventions in diabetes management, offering prospects for improved outcomes and enhanced quality of life for affected individuals. DNA methylation GrimAge acceleration (DMGA) and intrinsic epigenetic age acceleration (IEAA) are important physiological markers for assessing the ageing process. Evidence from cross-sectional studies suggests that some dietary intake is associated with DMGA and IEAA. However, the causal relationship between them has yet to be elucidated. This Mendelian randomisation study uses genetic variants associated with different dietary intakes as instrumental variables to explore the causal benefits of multiple dietary intakes on DMGA and IEAA. Cheese intake, dark chocolate intake, average weekly red wine intake, dried fruit intake, fresh fruit intake, porridge intake, cereal intake, and liver intake had a negative causal association with DMGA, and poultry intake and doughnut intake had a positive causal association with DMGA (p < 0.05). Muesli and bran cereal intake had a negative causal association with IEAA, and pineapple intake had a positive causal association with IEAA (p < 0.05). Dietary intake positively causally associated with IEAA or DMGA may have accelerated biological ageing; conversely, dietary intake negatively causally associated with IEAA or DMGA may have contributed to delaying biological ageing. Based on genetic evidence, this study demonstrated some significant causal benefits of dietary intake on DMGA and IEAA, suggesting the possibility of intervening in DNA methylation acceleration and epigenetic age acceleration by adjusting these food intakes, thereby promoting health and delaying ageing. Background: To investigate the association between oxidative balance score (OBS), cardiovascular mortality (CVM), and all-cause mortality (ACM) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. Methods: We included 6,119 participants with T2DM from the 2005-2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES). The status of CVM and ACM of participants was followed through December 31, 2019. Multivariable Cox regression models, Kaplan-Meier curves, log-rank test, restricted cubic spline regression, and subgroup analysis, were used to evaluate the relationship between OBS, CVM, and ACM. Results: During a median of 100.9 months follow-up, 1,790 ACM cases had occurred, 508 of which were due to cardiovascular disease. The T2DM participants were divided into four groups based on the quartiles of OBS. Participants with Q4 tended to be younger, financially better-off, married, highly educated, had lower alcohol consumption rates, were non-smokers, and exhibited a lower likelihood of ACM and CVM. In multivariate Cox regression models, compared with the patients with Q4, those with Q1 had a 30% increased risk for ACM (Q1, reference; Q4, HR: 0.70, 95%CI: 0.58-0.86) and a 43% increased risk for CVM (Q1, reference; Q4, HR: 0.57, 95%CI: 0.36-0.88). The restricted cubic spline regression models have no nonlinear relationship between OBS, CVM, and ACM. Kaplan-Meier survival curves showed that patients with Q4 had a lower risk of ACM and CVM (log-rank P < 0.05). Conclusions: We find that ACM and CVM increase with higher OBS in T2DM patients. Background/Objectives: Colorectal cancer incidence in Bahrain occurs at a ratio of 13.4–18.8 per 100,000 persons after age standardization. This study aims to explore the relationship between colorectal cancer/abnormalities and different lifestyle factors. Secondly, it aims to explore the association between f-Hb levels, colonoscopy findings, and lifestyle factors in a FIT-positive population in Bahrain. Method: A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed for patients positive for FIT and who had a colonoscopy. Different dietary and demographic factors as well as f-Hb levels were assessed. Results: A total of 559 (M: 330; F: 229) subjects were enrolled in this study. Subjects with CRC had significantly higher f-Hb concentrations (median: 1269 μg/mg) when compared with subjects of other groups. Higher percentages of CRC as well as large and small polyps were recorded in males. However, there was no significant difference in f-Hb concentration between males and females (p = 0.90). Higher median levels were found for f-Hb in patients with Q3 (higher red meat consumption) compared to Q1 and Q2 in the category with CRC, despite there being no statistically significant differences among the groups (p = 0.742). Similar results for coffee consumption and f-Hb concentrations in the different groups have been recorded (p = 0.697). A higher quartile of red meat consumption was associated with an increase in CRC risk of 79.9%. Coffee consumption reflected a lower risk of CRC by −47% moving from Q1 to Q2, while BMI was found to be a risk factor (+44%) for CRC. Aims Methods Results Conclusions This study aimed to review meta‐analyses of randomised controlled trials that evaluated the effectiveness of the Mediterranean Diet for the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease.Five databases (Medline, Embase, Cochrane, CINAHL and ProQuest) were searched from inception to November 2022. Inclusion criteria were: (i) systematic review of randomised controlled studies with metanalysis; (ii) adults ≥18 years from the general population with (secondary prevention) and without (primary prevention) established cardiovascular disease; (iii) Mediterranean Diet compared with another dietary intervention or usual care. Review selection and quality assessment using AMSTAR‐2 were completed in duplicate. GRADE was extracted from each review, and results were synthesised narratively.Eighteen meta‐analyses of 238 randomised controlled trials were included, with an 8% overlap of primary studies. Compared to usual care, the Mediterranean Diet was associated with reduced cardiovascular disease mortality (n = 4 reviews, GRADE low certainty; risk ratio range: 0.35 [95% confidence interval: 0.15–0.82] to 0.90 [95% confidence interval: 0.72–1.11]). Non‐fatal myocardial infarctions were reduced (n = 4 reviews, risk ratio range: 0.47 [95% confidence interval: 0.28–0.79] to 0.60 [95% confidence interval: 0.44–0.82]) when compared with another active intervention. The methodological quality of most reviews (n = 16/18; 84%) was low or critically low and strength of evidence was generally weak.This review showed that the Mediterranean Diet can reduce fatal cardiovascular disease outcome risk by 10%–67% and non‐fatal cardiovascular disease outcome risk by 21%–70%. Background: Hearing loss (HL) is the third most prevalent condition, significantly affecting individuals and society. Recent research has explored the potential impact of nutrition, particularly caffeine intake, on HL. While some studies focus on coffee, caffeine intake should be assessed across all dietary sources. This study examines the association between dietary caffeine intake and HL. Methods: Our cross-sectional study included 6,082 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Participants were divided into two groups based on their median caffeine intake: low and high. The study investigated two types of HL: speech-frequency hearing loss (SFHL) and high-frequency hearing loss (HFHL). Binary logistic regression analyzed the correlation between caffeine intake and HL, and a restricted cubic spline (RCS) model assessed potential non-linear associations. Subgroup analyses were also conducted. Results: High caffeine intake was associated with significantly higher rates of SFHL and HFHL compared to low intake (SFHL: 15.4% vs. 10%, HFHL: 30.5% vs. 20.6%, both p  <  0.001). Unadjusted logistic regression showed a higher likelihood of SFHL (OR[95%CI]  =  1.65[1.41–1.92]) and HFHL (OR[95%CI]  =  1.69[1.50–1.90]) in high caffeine consumers. After adjusting for confounders, high caffeine intake remained significantly associated with SFHL (OR[95%CI]  =  1.35[1.09–1.66]) but not HFHL (OR[95%CI]  =  1.14[0.96–1.35]). The RCS model indicated a linear increase in the risk of SFHL and HFHL with higher caffeine intake (non-linear p  =  0.229 for SFHL, p  =  0.894 for HFHL). Subgroup analysis revealed that increased caffeine intake was linked to higher SFHL and HFHL risks in participants under 65  years but not in those 65  years and older (SFHL: p for interaction  =  0.002; HFHL: p for interaction <0.001). Conclusion: Our study indicates a strong correlation between dietary caffeine intake and the risk of HL in American adults, particularly those under 65. Background: Oxidative stress has been implicated in the pathogenesis and progression of dyslipidemia. We aimed to investigate the association between the oxidative balance score, and dyslipidemia, as well as to assess the mortality risk associated with oxidative balance score in patients with dyslipidemia. Methods: We performed a mortality follow‐up study of a cross‐sectional cohort of 26,118 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999–2018. The total oxidative balance score was calculated by 16 dietary nutrients (dietary oxidative balance score) and four lifestyle factors (lifestyle oxidative balance score). Weighted Cox proportional hazard model was applied to determine the relationship between oxidative balance score and all‐cause or cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality within the dyslipidemia group. Results: During a median follow‐up of 118 months, 2448 all‐cause deaths (766 CVD‐related) occurred. A significant negative correlation was observed between total oxidative balance score, dietary oxidative balance score, lifestyle oxidative balance score, and dyslipidemia. The multivariable‐adjusted odds ratios and 95% CIs for dyslipidemia were 0.86 (0.77–0.97), 0.80 (0.72–0.91), and 0.63 (0.56–0.70), respectively, when comparing the second, third, and fourth quartiles of total oxidative balance score to the reference lowest quartile (P for trend <0.0001). Increasing total oxidative balance score was inversely associated with all‐cause (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.98, 95% CI 0.98–0.99) and CVD‐specific mortality (HR = 0.98, 95% CI 0.97–0.99) in participants with dyslipidemia. Conclusions: Oxidative balance score is inversely associated with dyslipidemia and linked to all‐cause and CVD‐related mortality, highlighting the potentially protective role of an antioxidant‐rich diet against dyslipidemia. Functional lipids are dietary substances that may have an impact on human health by lowering the risk of chronic illnesses and enhancing the quality of life. Numerous functional lipids have been reported to have potential health benefits in the prevention, management, and treatment of cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in the United States. However, there is still insufficient and contradictory information in the literature about their effectiveness and associated mechanisms of action. The objective of this review, therefore, is to evaluate available literature regarding these functional lipids and their health benefits. Various studies have been conducted to understand the links between functional lipids and the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases. Recent studies on phytosterols have reported that CLA, medium-chain triglycerides, and omega-3 and 6 fatty acids have positive effects on human health. Also, eicosanoids, which are the metabolites of these fatty acids, are produced in relation to the ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids and may modulate disease conditions. These functional lipids are available either in dietary or supplement forms and have been proven to be efficient, accessible, and inexpensive to be included in the diet. However, further research is required to properly elucidate the dosages, dietary intake, effectiveness, and their mechanisms of action in addition to the development of valid disease biomarkers and long-term effects in humans. Generally, a person's life span depends on their food consumption because it may cause deadly diseases like colorectal cancer (CRC). In 2020, colorectal cancer accounted for one million fatalities globally, representing 10% of all cancer casualties. 76,679 males and 78,213 females over the age of 59 from ten states in the United States participated in this analysis. During follow-up, 1378 men and 981 women were diagnosed with colon cancer. This prospective cohort study used 231 food items and their variants as input features to identify CRC patients. Before labelling any foods as colorectal cancer-causing foods, it is ethical to analyse facts like how many grams of food should be consumed daily and how many times a week. This research examines five classification algorithms on real-time datasets: K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN), Decision Tree (DT), Random Forest (RF), Logistic Regression with Classifier Chain (LRCC), and Logistic Regression with Label Powerset (LRLC). Chronic diseases have emerged as a formidable global health concern, with their prevalence steadily rising over the years. Several approaches to addressing these concerns include the use of medications, which are often expensive, contain synthetic chemical substances, and have reported adverse effects. The use of foods, especially proteins, as an alternative approach to addressing chronic health concerns by treating and managing chronic diseases is increasing. This review evaluates the intriguing role of food proteins in mitigating chronic diseases and improving our understanding of the therapeutic potential of different protein types, including those derived from legumes, nuts, and seeds, dairy, fish, and numerous other sources. They have been reported to offer promising avenues for managing chronic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, chronic inflammation, weight management, bone health, glycemic control, muscle preservation, and many other health benefits. Although the exact mechanisms for these actions are still not properly elucidated, it is, however, understood that food proteins exert these health-beneficial effects by their unique nutritional and bioactive profiles, especially their bioactive peptides and amino acids. Hypertension is a disorder that needs to be kept in check, as it can lead to cardiovascular diseases, renal failure, and if left unmanaged, to loss of life. Laboratory investigations have revealed that lifestyle alterations, such as changes in the dietary routine, can serve to keep hypertension under control. Among the productive means, of promoting adjustments, in the diet of hypertension patients are educational videos. This study delves into the development and validation of educational videos, aimed at encouraging dietary adjustments among hypertension sufferers. The design and developmental research (DDR) methodology was harnessed for this investigation. The process comes with three phases: (I) content analysis, (II) design and development and (III) evaluation. The objectives, structure/presentation and relevance of the educational videos were scrutinized by way of the Educational Content Validation Instrument in Health. Generally, I-CVI, S-CVI/Ave and S-CVI/UA for each domain met an acceptable content validity level, while several alterations were required for domain Objectives (S-CVI/Ave: 0.91, S-CVI/UA: 0.80) and Structure/Presentation (S-CVI/Ave: 0.93, S-CVI/UA: 0.60). However, no alterations were necessary for domain Relevance (S-CVI/Ave: 1.0, S-CVI/UA: 1.0). Given the abundance of existing educational videos on dietary management for hypertension, the creation of videos in this study and impartial evaluation of these materials would be advantageous for instructional purposes. Objective: To appraise the dietary perception and knowledge of cardiac patients visiting Outpatient department of a tertiary care hospital. Methods: A cross sectional study of 466 patients attending cardiac outdoor clinic at a tertiary care cardiac hospital in Rawalpindi, Pakistan were selected through convenient sampling from January to April 2021. Patients included in the study were above 18 years of age and had a cardiac disease. A structured questionnaire in English and Urdu was drafted with questions related to patient demographics, dietary perception and knowledge. Results: Among 466 patients, 60% (n=280) were males and 40% (n=186) were females whereas 14% (n=66) of the patients were uneducated and 15% (n=68) had completed postgraduate education. In this study 23% (n=106) of the participants used internet to search nutrition related information and 72 % (n=339) of the patients consider their lifestyle to be healthy. Majority (n=261, 56%) of the patients had no idea regarding sodium consumption. 46% (n=215) of the patients had no knowledge regarding the effects of bakery items on cardiac health. Conclusion: Dietary Knowledge plays a predominant role in the management of cardiac disease. The study concluded that cardiac patients had inadequate knowledge regarding dietary intake in cardiac disease and has high prevalence of dietary myths and misconceptions. In response to the insightful comments made by Dr. Abid et al. on our article "Investigation of Vitamin D Levels in Men with Suspected Infertility", we address several key points concerning the generalizability and methodology of our study. Dr. Abid et al.'s critique primarily focused on the single-center nature of our research, regional variations in ultraviolet (UV) exposure, dietary factors affecting vitamin D levels, and the sample size of our study. We discuss the inherent value and controlled environment of single-center studies while acknowledging the need for multi-center validation. Additionally, we explain our consideration of sun exposure and dietary intake in our analysis, and recognize the importance of larger, more diverse studies to strengthen our findings. Given the importance that a correct and balanced nutrition has on patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), supplementation of macro and micronutrients has been proposed, but the results of previous meta-analyses are contrasting. We performed an update of the latest evidence through a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies to assess the role of nutritional supplements in improving nutritional status, pulmonary function, physical performance, and quality of life of these patients. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published between 01-01-2010 and 11-01-2023 evaluating the effectiveness of nutritional support in patients affected by stable COPD with an intervention of at least 2 weeks. Primary outcomes were changes in body mass index (BMI) and fat free mass index (FFMI). Secondary outcomes were exercise tolerance (6-min walking test, 6MWT), quality of life (St George's Respiratory Questionnaire, SGRQ) and respiratory function (FEV1). According with supplements type (macronutrients or micronutrients), we calculated the pooled adjusted mean difference (MD) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) of the selected outcomes, using random-effects models in presence of high heterogeneity (I2>50%) or fixed-effects models otherwise. The risk of publication bias was evaluated with the trim and fill method. From 967 articles, 20 RCTs were included. Macronutrients supplementation improved BMI (MD 1.0 kg/m2, 95%CI 0.21-1.79), FFMI (MD 0.77 Kg/m2, 95%CI 0.48-1.06), 6MQT (MD 68.39 m, 95%CI 40.07-96.71), and SGRQ (MD −5.14, 95% CI −7.31-2.97), while it does not ameliorate respiratory function (MD 0.26% 95%CI −1.87-2.40). BACKGROUND: It is established that the immune system, namely T cells, plays a role in the development of hypertension and renal damage in male Dahl salt-sensitive (SS) rats, but far less is known about this relationship in females. Rats with genetically deleted T cells via CD247 gene mutation on the Dahl SS background (SSCD247−/−) were utilized to interrogate the effect of sex and T cells on salt sensitivity. METHODS: We assessed the hypertensive and kidney injury phenotypes in male versus female SS and SSCD247−/− rats challenged with 3 weeks of high salt (4. 0% NaCl). Differences in T cell activation genes were examined in renal T cells from male and female SS rats, and a sex-specific adoptive transfer was performed by injecting male or female splenocytes into either male or female SSCD247−/− recipients to determine the potential contribution of T cell sex. RESULTS: The lack of functional T cells in SSCD247−/− rats significantly reduced salt-induced hypertension and proteinuria in both sexes, although SSCD247−/− females exhibited greater protection from kidney damage. Adoptive transfer of either Dahl SS male or female splenocytes into SSCD247−/− male recipients exacerbated hypertension and proteinuria compared with controls, while in SSCD247−/− female recipients, exacerbation of disease occurred only upon transfer of male, but not female, SS splenocytes. CONCLUSIONS: The absence of T cells in the SSCD247−/− normalized sex differences in blood pressure, though sex differences in renal damage persisted. Background: Obesity is a multi-organ system disease, which is associated with, e.g., a higher prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and asthma. Little is known regarding the effect of obesity-related parameters (including liver integrity) and the respiratory phenotype after a combination of physical activity and diet. Methods: Thirty-two C57BL/6 mice were, after 27 weeks of a high fat diet (HFD), randomly assigned to two dietary interventions for three weeks: a HFD or a normal chow diet (NCD). In both dietary groups, half of the animals were subjected to a sub-maximal exercise protocol. Lung function, lung inflammation, liver histology, and metabolic profile were determined. Results: Mice with obesity did not show airway hyperreactivity after methacholine provocation. Sub-maximal exercise with diet (NCD/E) induced a significant reduction in forced expiratory volume in 0.1 s after methacholine provocation. NCD/E had significantly more neutrophils and inflammation (IFN-γ, TNF-α, IL-4, and IL-17F) in bronchoalveolar lavage compared to non-exercising mice on a HFD (HFD/NE). However, more epithelial injury (serum surfactant protein D and IL-33) was seen in HFD/NE. Additionally, hepatic steatosis and fibrosis were reduced by combined diet and sub-maximal exercise. Background and aimsHigher truncated-to-native proteoform ratios of apolipoproteins (apo) C-I (C-I'/C-I) and C-II (C-II'/C-II) are associated with less atherogenic lipid profiles. We examined prospective relationships of C-I'/C-II and C-II'/C-II with coronary heart disease (CHD) and coronary artery calcium (CAC).MethodsApoC-I and apoC-II proteoforms were measured by mass spectrometry immunoassay in 5790 MESA baseline plasma samples. CHD events (myocardial infarction, resuscitated cardiac arrest, fatal CHD, n = 434) were evaluated for up to 17 years. CAC was measured 1-4 times over 10 years for incident CAC (if baseline CAC = 0), and changes (follow-up adjusted for baseline) in CAC score and density (if baseline CAC>0).ResultsC-II'/C-II was inversely associated with CHD (n = 434 events) after adjusting for non-lipid cardiovascular risk factors (Hazard ratio: 0.89 [95% CI: 0.81-0.98] per SD), however, the association was attenuated after further adjustment for HDL levels (0.93 [0.83-1.03]). There was no association between C-I'/C-I and CHD (0.98 [0.88-1.08]). C-II'/C-II was positively associated with changes in CAC score (3.4% [95%CI: 0.6, 6.3]) and density (6.3% [0.3, 4.2]), while C-I'/C-I was inversely associated with incident CAC (Risk ratio: 0.89 [95% CI: 0.81, 0.98]) in fully adjusted models that included plasma lipids. Total apoC-I and apoC-II concentrations were not associated with CHD, incident CAC or change in CAC score.ConclusionsIncreased apoC-II truncation was associated with reduced CHD, possibly explained by differences in lipid metabolism. Increased apoC-I and apoC-II truncations were also associated with less CAC progression and/or development of denser coronary plaques.

Summary: Background: Coronary angioplasty and stent insertion is a first line treatment for patients with coronary artery disease, however it is complicated in the long-term by in-stent restenosis (ISR) in a proportion of patients with an associated morbidity. Despite this, currently there are no effective treatments available for the prevention of ISR. Repeat percutaneous revascularisation carries increased risks of major adverse cardiovascular events and a higher incidence of stent failure. In this study we report the efficacy of dietary inorganic nitrate in the prevention of ISR in a prospective, double-blind, randomised controlled trial. Methods: NITRATE-OCT is a double-blind, randomised, single-centre, placebo-controlled phase II trial. 300 patients who were planned to undergo percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and drug eluting stent (DES) implantation for stable angina were randomised on a 1:1 basis to receive a daily dose of either dietary inorganic nitrate or placebo for 6 months. Block randomisation was used and patients stratified according to diabetes status. The patients then underwent quantitative coronary angiography (QCA) at baseline and at 6 months and optical coherence tomography at 6 months to quantify ISR. The primary endpoint was the QCA quantified decrease of in-stent/in-segment diameter from the baseline measure at 6 months i.e., in-stent and in-segment late-lumen loss (LLL). The study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT02529189. Findings: From November 1st 2015 and March 31st 2020, NITRATE-OCT enrolled 300 patients with angina, with 150 each randomised to receive 70 mL of nitrate-containing beetroot juice or placebo (nitrate-deplete) juice for 6 months. Procedural characteristics were similar between the groups. The primary endpoint was available in 208 patients: 107 and 101 in the nitrate and placebo groups, respectively. BackgroundThe global prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) is increasing, primarily characterized by abdominal obesity, which significantly heightens the risk of cardiovascular diseases, gastrointestinal disorders, and cancers. Constipation is a common gastrointestinal issue that impacts both physiological and psychological health and worsens with age. Calcium, an essential mineral vital for human health, has been proven to be crucial not only for bone health but also beneficial for gastrointestinal health. However, the results regarding its impact on constipation are inconsistent. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between dietary calcium intake and constipation in individuals with MetS.MethodsThis cross-sectional study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2005 to 2010. Participants were assessed for MetS based on the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria. Dietary calcium intake was evaluated through 24-h dietary recalls, and constipation was defined based on the frequency of bowel movements recorded in the bowel health questionnaire. The relationship between calcium intake and constipation was explored using logistic regression models with adjustment for covariates, and restricted cubic spline analyses were also used to investigate nonlinear relationships.ResultsThe study included 4,838 adult participants with MetS. Adjusted logistic regression revealed that an increase in dietary calcium intake was significantly associated with a reduced risk of constipation (OR: 0.562, 95% CI: 0.379 to 0.835, p = 0.006). Compared to the lowest quartile, the highest quartile of dietary calcium intake significantly decreased the risk of constipation (OR: 0.282, 95% CI: 0.115 to 0.691, p = 0.008). Results from the restrictive cubic spline analysis indicated a negative linear association between dietary calcium intake and constipation risk (non-linearity p = 0.704).ConclusionThe findings suggested that increased dietary calcium intake is associated with a decreased risk of constipation among MetS patients, emphasizing dietary calcium as a potentially modifiable factor for managing gastrointestinal symptoms in this population.

AimThis study aimed to investigate the causes and risk factors of colorectal cancer (CRC) in a Turkish population, focusing on various modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors.MethodsA hospital-based case-control design was employed to compare individuals with CRC (cases) to individuals without CRC (controls). Male and female participants were recruited from the surgery, internal medicine, and out-patient departments. The study encompassed socio-demographic data, clinical information, radiological diagnoses, and biochemical measurements. Univariable and multivariable logistic regressions were used to determine associated risk factors of CRC.ResultsThe study included 704 individuals with CRC and 704 controls. Significant socio-demographic disparities were observed between the groups, with over 30% of the cases having lower levels of education and income compared to the controls. Lifestyle factors such as obesity, higher rates of smoking (cigarettes and hookah) and alcohol consumption were more prevalent among cases than controls. Further significant associations were identified with intestinal inflammation, obesity, processed food consumption, and symptoms such as abdominal pain, cramps, diarrhea, constipation, blood in stool, bloating, irritable bowel syndrome, nausea/vomiting, anemia, stress, fatigue, weakness, and weight loss. Diet analysis revealed that individuals with CRC consumed more red meat, processed and fast foods along with less pulses and vegetables. Genetic predispositions and exposure to chemicals also correlated strongly with increased CRC risk. Multivariable regression analysis identified, nausea/vomiting, constipation, intestinal disease, genetics factor, hookah-nargileh use, history of any cancer, family history of bowel cancer, constipation, cigarette smoking, stress, milk-yogurt consumption, obesity and red meat consumption as significant determinants for CRC.ConclusionCRC risk is influenced by dietary, lifestyle, and genetic factors. Awareness of hereditary risk and participation in screening are crucial. Lifestyle changes, such as avoiding smoking, hookah, and alcohol use, and adopting a healthy diet, are essential for prevention.

Objective: Hypertension has become a public health challenge for Yunnan children and adolescents. The study aims is to assess the dietary and activity habits associated with hypertension in Kunming children and adolescents and to develop effective strategies for preventing and controlling, Southwest China. Methods: Conducted in 2019, the cross-sectional study involved 3,150 students, aged 13.25 ± 2.77 years, multistage, stratified, randomly sampled from Chenggong and Fumin areas, Southwest China. Results: Among 3,150 participants, 6.19 % never drank milk, 3.46 % never consumed fresh fruit. 2.67 % never consumed fresh vegetables, 2.48 % never ate breakfast and 10.06 % frequently drank sugary beverages (soft drinking). Additionally, 21.56 % engaged in moderate-intensity exercise less than one Day a week, and 31.97 % performed high-intensity exercise less than one Day a week. The intraclass correlation coefficient indicated that 49.40 % of the total variance was attributed to the dietary level and 42.10 % was attributed to the activity level. ObjectivesCurrent literature is lacking a comprehensive review of data on dietary interventions in blood pressure (BP) management in sub-Saharan African countries. We assessed the association of dietary and other lifestyle interventions with BP-lowering effects in populations within sub-Saharan Africa.MethodsWe performed a systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis to determine the impact of dietary and lifestyle interventions on SBP and DBP in sub-Saharan Africa. We searched the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases. We included intervention studies that were randomized and nonrandomized conducted in Africans residing in sub-Saharan Africa investigating diet and other lifestyle, physical activity, weight loss, tobacco, and alcohol cessation modifications. We determined the effect of diet and other lifestyle interventions on SBP and DBP. Technology-enabled approaches to conducting 24-h dietary recalls (24HR) may reduce dietary assessment bottlenecks in low-resource settings. However, few studies have assessed their performance relative to conventional pen-and-paper interview (PAPI) approaches and none have validated performance against a benchmark (e.g. weighed food record (WFR)) in a low- and middle-income country (LMIC). This study assessed relative accuracy and cost-effectiveness of INDDEX24, a technology-enabled approach to conducting 24HR, compared with a PAPI approach and against an observer WFR. Women aged 18-49 years from northern Viet Nam (n 234) were randomly assigned to be interviewed using INDDEX24 or PAPI 24HR following a WFR. The two one-sided t test approach assessed the equivalence of each recall modality to the benchmark. Difference-in-differences analysis compared the recall-benchmark results across modalities. Cost per percentage point of accuracy for INDDEX24 and PAPI was derived from accuracy results and the cost to conduct the 24HR. The PAPI and INDDEX24 24HR were statistically equivalent to the WFR for all nutrients except vitamin A. INDDEX24 diverged significantly less than PAPI from the WFR for Fe (0·9 v. -1·3 mg) and PAPI diverged less for protein (-3·7 v. 7·9 g). At the individual level, 26 % of PAPI and 32 % of INDDEX24 respondents had energy intakes within +/- 10 % of the WFR. INDDEX24 cost $111 004 and the PAPI cost $120 483 (USD 2019), making INDDEX24 more cost-effective across most indicators. INDDEX24 was an accurate and cost-effective method for assessing dietary intake in the study context and represents a preferred alternative to PAPI 24HR in Viet Nam and other LMIC.

The ventrolateral preoptic area (VLPO) contains GABAergic sleep-active neurons. However, the extent to which these neurons are involved in expressing spontaneous sleep and homeostatic sleep regulatory demands is not fully understood. We used calcium (Ca2+) imaging to characterize the activity dynamics of VLPO neurons, especially those expressing the vesicular GABA transporter (VGAT) across spontaneous sleep-waking and in response to homeostatic sleep demands. The VLPOs of wild-type and VGAT-Cre mice were transfected with GCaMP6, and the Ca2+ fluorescence of unidentified (UNID) and VGAT cells was recorded during spontaneous sleep-waking and 3 h of sleep deprivation (SD) followed by 1 h of recovery sleep. Although both VGAT and UNID neurons exhibited heterogeneous Ca2+ fluorescence across sleep-waking, the majority of VLPO neurons displayed increased activity during nonREM/REM (VGAT, 120/303; UNID, 39/106) and REM sleep (VGAT, 32/303; UNID, 19/106). Compared to the baseline waking, VLPO sleep-active neurons (n = 91) exhibited higher activity with increasing SD that remained elevated during the recovery period. These neurons also exhibited increased Ca2+ fluorescence during nonREM sleep, marked by increased slow-wave activity and REM sleep during recovery after SD. These findings support the notion that VLPO sleep-active neurons, including GABAergic neurons, are components of neuronal circuitry that mediate spontaneous sleep and homeostatic responses to sustained wakefulness.
