In order to evaluate the dietary risk of imazalil and prochloraz residues in whole fruit, peel and pulp of litchi, this study reported a gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) to determine the residue of imazalil, prochloraz and their metabolites simultaneously. The limit of detection and limit of quantitation of this method were 2.0 and 6.0 µg/kg for imazalil, 3.0 and 10.0 µg/kg for prochloraz, 6.0 and 20.0 µg/kg for imidazole ethanol, as well as 0.3 and 1.0 µg/kg for 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, respectively. The average recoveries in whole fruit, peel and pulp of litchi were 78.9%~107%. The relative standard deviation (RSD) ranges from 2.6% to 5.8%. The results of preservation showed that the higher the concentration of imazalil and prochloraz the higher the residual amount. The residue gradually migrated from peel to pulp with the increases in storage time. After freshness processing, the residues of imazalil and prochloraz in whole fruit and peel decreased, while the pulp increased to the maximum value on the 7th day, and then gradually decreased. Imidazole ethanol and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol increased with the increase of storage time. The risk of chronic and acute dietary intake within 14 days of safe interval was within acceptable range.

This study evaluated the residue behavior and dissipation dynamics of a new imidacloprid FS 600 seed treatment in potato cultivation systems in Shandong and Jilin, China. The contamination of food by microplastics has garnered widespread attention, particularly concerning the health risks associated with small-sized microplastics. However, detecting these smaller microplastics in food poses challenges attributed to the complexity of food matrices and instrumental and method limitations. Here, we employed Raman imaging for visualization and identification of polystyrene particles synthesized in polymerization reactions, ranging from 400 to 2600 nm. We successfully developed a quantitative model of particle size and concentration for polystyrene, exhibiting excellent fit (R2 of 0.9946). We established procedures for spiked flavored yogurt using synthesized polystyrene, providing fresh insights into microplastic extraction efficiency. Recovery rates calculated from models validated the method's feasibility. In practical applications, the assessment of the size, type, shape, and quantity of microplastics in unspiked flavored yogurt was conducted. The most common polymers found were polystyrene, polypropylene, and polyethylene, with the smallest polystyrene sizes ranging from 1 to 10 μm. Additionally, we conducted exposure assessments of microplastics in branded flavored yogurt. This study established a foundation for developing a universal method to quantify microplastics in food, covering synthesis of standards, method development, validation, and application. Abstract Background The Global Diet Quality Score (GDQS) was developed to be a simple, timely and cost-effective tool to track, simultaneously, nutritional deficiency and non-communicable disease risks from diet in diverse settings. The objective was to investigate the performance of GDQS as an indicator of adequate nutrient intake and dietary quality in a national-representative sample of the Brazilian population. Methods Nationally-representative data from 44,744 men and non-pregnant and non-lactating women aging ≥ 10 years, from the Brazilian National Dietary Survey were used. Dietary data were collected through two 24-h recalls (24HR). The GDQS was calculated and compared to a proxy indicator of nutrient adequate intake (the Minimum Dietary Diversity for Women—MDD-W) and to an indicator of high-risk diet for non-communicable diseases (caloric contribution from ultra-processed foods—UPF). To estimate the odds for overall nutrient inadequacy across MDD-W and GDQS quintiles, a multiple logistic regression was applied, and the two metrics’ performances were compared using Wald’s post-test. Results The mean GDQS for Brazilians was 14.5 (0–49 possible range), and only 1% of the population had a low-risk diet (GDQS ≥ 23). To clarify the impact of different washing and cooking approaches on the dietary exposure risks of two fat-soluble pesticides (chlorfenapyr and beta-cypermethrin) in mustard green (Brassica juncea (L.) Czern.) and non-heading Chinese cabbage (Brassica chinensis L.), five common cleaning approaches (edible salt water, edible baking soda water, rice-washing water, tap water, edible vinegar aqueous solution) were used to clean the mustard green and non-heading Chinese cabbage in a simulated Chinese kitchen, and four cooking approaches (boiling, steaming, frying, and pickling) were used to process the samples. The residues of chlorfenapyr and beta-cypermethrin in samples before and after kitchen processing were determined using QuEChERS sample preparation and GC-MS/MS and UPLC-MS/MS detection. By estimating the processing factors (PF) and the changes in exposure doses and the contributions to long-term dietary exposure risk (ADIi%) and short-term dietary exposure risk (%ARfD) to three representative Chinese populations (children, women of childbearing age, and the general population), the role of washing and cooking in reducing dietary exposure risk and in reducing uncertainty in dietary exposure risk assessment were estimated. The results showed that, edible baking soda water and the edible salt water had the best removal rates for mustard green and non-heading Chinese cabbage, and it was significantly better than the washing with tap water. After washing and cooking, the processing factors (PFTotal) in mustard green were 0.06-0.24 for chlorfenapyr and 0.04-0.11 for beta-cypermethrin, and those in non-heading Chinese cabbage were 0.05-0.21 for chlorfenapyr and 0.06-0.11 for beta-cypermethrin. The estimated exposure doses of these 2 pesticide residues were reduced by 76%-96% using washing and cooking processing. The study showed that routine kitchen processing can differentially reduce the risk of long-term and short-term dietary exposure of both chlorfenapyr and beta-cypermethrin residues to representative populations in China. Abstract Background Sufficient, safe and nutritious food is unattainable for many people experiencing severe food insecurity, putting them at dietary risk. Food banks, a growing part of the charitable food system (CFS), are the main source of food relief in developed countries. Donations of surplus, unsalable food from supermarkets, producers and manufacturers is the main source of the food supply, and this can be unpredictable, insufficient and inappropriate. The universal performance indicator of food-banking success is a weight-based measure, complemented by various initiatives to track the nutritional quality of food provided. There is currently no method that assesses the dietary risk of donated food related to nutrition and food safety. This protocol describes a method developed to identify and assess the dietary risk of donated food at an Australian food bank including the type, amount, nutrition quality, and food safety. Methods An audit of all food donated to a food bank servicing one Australian state was conducted over five consecutive days in May 2022. The audit process used a mobile device to take photographs of all incoming deliveries to the food bank. The images were manually annotated to document the type of food, product information (brand and product name, variety), the donor’s name, weight (kilograms), and date-marking details. Data was extracted from the photographs and assessed against pre-determined dietary risk criterion for food safety (date marking, damaged packaging, visible food spoilage) and nutrition quality according to the principles of the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating, and the NOVA classification of level of processing. Discussion Fifteen hundred images were required to assess the dietary risk of 86,050 kg of donated food. There were 72 separate donations, largely from supermarkets and food manufacturers. Data analysis will enable identification of dietary risk, particularly for nutrition quality and food safety. This is important given the absence of food regulation for CFS donations, and the vulnerability of the client group. This protocol highlights the need for more transparency and accountability from food donors, about the food they donate.

This study aimed to investigate the dissipation, residues and dietary assessment of kresoxim-methyl in the application of Rosa Roxburghii and soil field using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). The results show that kresoxim-methyl in R. roxburghii samples was extracted by acetonitrile and purified by ethyl enediamine-N-propylsilane (PSA), while kresoxim-methyl in soil samples was extracted by acetonitrile and purified by octadecylsilyl solid phase dispersant (C18). 0.1% formic acid (v/v)-water–methanol solution was used as the mobile phase, LC–MS/MS exhibited a good linearity in the range of 0.001–10 mg L−1. The recoveries of R. roxburghii and soil matrix were 82.48%–102.55%, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) were 1.13%–4.21%. The limit of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) of kresoxim-methyl in R. roxburghii and soil samples was 0.50 and 0.60 µg kg−1, respectively. The dissipation dynamics of kresoxim-methyl in R. roxburghii and soil followed the first-order kinetics, with the half-life of 4.28 and 4.41 days, respectively. The terminal residual amount of kresoxim-methyl in R. roxburghii and soil samples was 0.003–1.764 and 0.007–2.091 mg kg−1, respectively. The dietary intake risk assessment indicates that a risk quotient (RQ) for kresoxim-methyl based on the national estimated daily intake (NEDI) of 0.1995 mg was 0.79%, suggesting that the use of kresoxim-methyl on R. roxburghii at recommended dosage was safe to consumers. Milk and its derivatives are basic foods in Peru, especially for children. The Junín region, in the central Andes, is one of the leading dairy basins. However, the safety of milk is affected by mining–metallurgical activities, wastewater dumping, organic residues, and inappropriate use of organophosphate fertilizers in agriculture whose contaminants reach the food chain, putting human health at risk. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bioaccumulation of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and arsenic (As) in milk produced on a representative farm in central Peru, which uses phosphorous agrochemicals and is adjacent to a small mineral concentrator and a municipal solid waste dump, and to evaluate the potential risk for the Peruvian population of 2–85 years considering three levels of daily intake by age, which constitutes the innovative contribution of the study. These three elements were quantified by flame atomic absorption spectrometry following standardized procedures. The mean contents of Pb (0.062 mg/kg), Cd (0.014 mg/kg), and As (0.030 mg/kg) in milk exceeded the maximum limits allowed by international standards. At all ages, the target quotient hazard followed a descending order of As > Pb > Cd, being > 1 in the case of As. The hazard index was >1 for children under 7, 9, and 11 years of age in the scenarios of low, medium, and high milk intake. The information is valid for formulating policies to prevent adverse health effects and develop standards and awareness programs, monitoring, and control of heavy metals in milk in Peru. Supervised field experiments were conducted to study the dissipation of ethion, chlorpyriphos, profenophos, carbendazim and cypermethrin in curry leaves. An analytical method was developed in line with the SANTE guideline on the method validation procedure for pesticide residue analysis. The validated method showed good recovery (70-120%) and repeatability (<20%). The limit of detection and limit of quantification were determined as 0.01 and 0.05 mg/kg respectively, for all analytes, except cypermethrin (0.05 and 0.1 mg/kg respectively). The mean initial deposit of pesticides analysed ranged from 9.53 to 93.92 mg/kg with a half-life of <8 days. Repeated presence of strawberries amongst produce with pesticide residues results in questionings related to the risks involved by its consumption. Deterministic and probabilistic risk assessment methods might be used depending on the available data. In the present study, both methods were used to estimate risks of pesticide intake by strawberry consumption. Strawberry samples along two years were analyzed via the multiresidue method. Results of active ingredients (a.i.) concentrations were organized and used for calculations for intake estimates. On the deterministic method, intake was calculated based on the data of a.i. concentration and consumption data coming from an online questionnaire and body weight between 5 and 70 kg. On the probabilistic method, the concentrations of a.i. and body weight of 60 kg were evaluated in two scenarios: a) consumption data from an online questionnaire or b) consumption data retrieved from Family Budget Survey of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. In the 62 strawberry samples, 38 a.i. were quantified and in 25 samples the residue analyses were considered satisfactory and 37 had an unsatisfactory outcome. In the deterministic approach, 23% of the a.i. had a calculated intake higher than the acceptable daily intake (ADI) and risk concentrated in body weights between 5 and 30 kg. The risk is low when considering a body weight of 60 kg. All a.i. tested in the first scenario of the probabilistic method pointed towards some possibility of intake being higher than the ADI. In order to clarify the status of pesticide residues in watermelon fruits produced by different cultivation methods and their differences, this paper took 65 watermelon samples produced in three cultivation methods: Large shed, small arch shed, and open field as the research object, and 60 pesticide residues in the completed samples. On the basis of quantitative analysis, through technical methods such as chronic and acute dietary risk analysis and risk ranking, the differences of pesticide residues in watermelon fruits produced by the three planting methods were discussed. The results showed that: Some samples had residual pesticides, but their chronic and acute dietary risks were not high; among the three planting methods, the open field planting method had the largest number of residual pesticides, with 9 types, and the proportion of very lowrisk samples was also low. In the other two methods, it reached 76%; in addition, the three types of planting methods need to focus on the relatively high risk of different types of residual pesticides. The green house used triazophos, and the small arch house used difenoconazole, profenofos, and chlorofluoro cyanurate. Pyrethrin was grown in the open as triazophos, profenofos, and prochloraz. Based on the above analysis, it could be concluded that among the three planting methods, the risk of pesticide residues in watermelon grown in open field was relatively high, and supervision should be strengthened according to the differences in the types of pesticide residues with relatively high risks.

Abstract Objective To describe changes over time in dietary risk factor prevalence and non-communicable disease in Pacific Island Countries (PICTs). Methods Secondary analysis of data from 21,433 adults aged 25–69, who participated in nationally representative World Health Organization STEPs surveys in 8 Pacific Island Countries and Territories between 2002 and 2019. Outcomes of interest were changes in consumption of fruit and vegetables, hypertension, overweight and obesity, and hypercholesterolaemia over time. Also, salt intake and sugar sweetened beverage consumption for those countries that measured these. Results Over time, the proportion of adults consuming less than five serves of fruit and vegetables per day decreased in five countries, notably Tonga. From the most recent surveys, average daily intake of sugary drinks was high in Kiribati (3.7 serves), Nauru (4.1) and Tokelau (4.0) and low in the Solomon Islands (0.4). Average daily salt intake was twice that recommended by WHO in Tokelau (10.1 g) and Wallis and Futuna (10.2 g). Prevalence of overweight/obesity did not change over time in most countries but increased in Fiji and Tokelau. Hypertension prevalence increased in 6 of 8 countries. The prevalence of hypercholesterolaemia decreased in the Cook Islands and Kiribati and increased in the Solomon Islands and Tokelau. Conclusions While some Pacific countries experienced reductions in diet related NCD risk factors over time, most did not. Most Pacific adults (88%) do not consume enough fruit and vegetables, 82% live with overweight or obesity, 33% live with hypertension and 40% live with hypercholesterolaemia. Population-wide approaches to promote fruit and vegetable consumption and reduce sugar, salt and fat intake need strengthening.

A commercial formulation called prothioconazole·kresoxim-methyl 50% water dispersible granule (WG), used to control the powdery mildew, is under registration for use on cucumbers. Therefore it is urgent to validate the reliability of the recommended good agricultural practices (GAP) conditions (187.5 g a.i. ha−1, three sprays with a 7-d interval, and a pre-harvest interval of 3 d) by conducting field trials in 12 regions in China, as required by national regulations, with a subsequent risk assessment. The residues of prothioconazole-desthio and kresoxim-methyl in field samples were determined using QuEChERS coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography – tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). On the suggested pre-harvest interval (PHI, 3 d), the residual concentrations of prothioconazole-desthio (no maximum residue limit set in China) and kresoxim-methyl (maximum residue limit = 0.5 mg/kg) in cucumbers were 0.01–0.020 and 0.01–0.050 mg/kg, respectively. The acute risk quotients of prothioconazole-desthio in cucumbers were no higher than 0.079% for Chinese consumers. The chronic dietary risk quotient of kresoxim-methyl and of prothioconazole-desthio for different groups of consumers in China ranged from 2.3% to 5.3% and from 1.6% to 4.6%, respectively. Thus, prothioconazole·kresoxim-methyl 50% WG sprayed on cucumbers under the recommended GAP information can pose a negligible risk for Chinese consumers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To evaluate the residue levels of fluopimomide, pyraclostrobin and its metabolite BF-500–3 in garlic ecosystems, supervised garlic field trials with a commercial formulation (pyraclostrobin·fluopimomide 30% suspension concentrate (SC)) were conducted in six regions of China according to the Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). The residues of fluopimomide, pyraclostrobin and BF-500–3 in field samples were determined using a QuEChERS method combined with high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC–MS/MS). The average recoveries of all target compounds were 76–94% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 1.0–14.5% and limits of quantitation (LOQs) of 0.002 mg/kg. At the recommended pre-harvest interval (PHI, 10 days), the residues of fluopimomide, pyraclostrobin and BF-500–3 were below 0.16, 0.77 and 0.12 mg/kg in garlic chive; below 0.027, 0.22 and 0.002 mg/kg in garlic scape; and below 0.002, 0.002 and 0.002 mg/kg in garlic, respectively. Dietary intake risks were calculated using risk quotients (RQs) based on field residual data, toxicological data and dietary patterns. The chronic dietary risk quotients (RQc) of pyraclostrobin and fluopimomide were 48.42% and 0.36%, respectively. The acute dietary risk quotients (RQa) of pyraclostrobin in garlic were 0.06–0.15%. Elaborating on the residual fate of fluxapyroxad and its metabolites based on their nationwide application was vital to protect the human population from their hazardous effects. In this study, a rapid and sensitive analytical method was developed to trace fluxapyroxad and two of its metabolites in peanut matrices using an ultrahigh chromatography method coupled with mass spectrometry (UHPLC–MS/MS) within 3.5 min. The occurrence, pharmacokinetic degradation and terminal magnitudes of fluxapyroxad were reflected in the original deposition of 8.41–38.15 mg/kg, half–lives of 2.5–8.6 d and final concentrations of 0.004–37.38 mg/kg in peanut straw. The total concentrations of fluxapyroxad in peanut straw (0.04–39.28 mg/kg) were significantly higher than those in peanut kernels (<0.001–0.005 mg/kg) and an obvious concentration effect was observed in fresh (0.01–11.56 mg/kg) compared dried peanut straw (0.04–38.97 mg/kg). Fluxapyroxad was demethylated to 3–(difluoromethyl)–N–(3′,4′,5′–trifluoro[1,1′–biphenyl]–2–yl)–1H–pyrazole–4–carboxamide (M700F008, 0.02–5.69 mg/kg) and further N–glycosylated to 3–(difluoromethyl)–1–(ß–D–glucopyranosyl)–N–(3′,4′,5′–triflurobipheny–2–yl)–1H–pyrzaole–4–carboxamide (M700F048, 0.04–39.28 mg/kg).The risk quotients of the total fluxapyroxad for the urban groups were significantly higher than those for the rural groups, and were both negatively correlated with the age of the groups, although both acute (ARfD%, 0.006–0.012%) and chronic (ADI%, 0.415–1.289%) risks are acceptable for the human population. In this study, the safety and risk of pyraclostrobin as an indoor fungicide against banana anthracnose were evaluated for the first time. The dissipation and distribution of pyraclostrobin for 14 days in banana peel and pulp were determined and studied by HPLC after simple, rapid pre-treatment at different indoor temperatures. The mean recovery was 83.46 ~ 95.67%, and the relative standard deviation was 4.01 ~ 10.99%. Results showed that the half-lives of pyraclostrobin in peel and pulp were 8.1 days (25°C), 12.4 days (12°C) and 12.8 days (25°C), 16.1 days (12°C). During the whole storage period of banana after application of pesticide, the residue of banana pulp was lower than the maximum residue level established in China. The potential risk of pyraclostrobin exposure through the dietary intake of bananas to different populations was also studied. According to the results of dietary risk assessment, the residual level of pyraclostrobin was within the acceptable range of chronic and acute dietary risk in different populations in China at 150 mg/kg. Our results show that pyraclostrobin as a fungicide in the indoor control of banana anthracnose has high safety and low risk, and can provide a reference for the safe and reasonable use of pyraclostrobin as an indoor fungicide and risk assessment. It is of great significance to investigate the changes of pesticide residues during processing procedures to ensure the accuracy of dietary risk assessment of pesticide residues. At present, there are few reports about the influence of household processing on pesticide residues in Auricularia auricula-judae. In this study, the changes of 22 pesticides and 3 metabolites during drying and rehydrating process in Auricularia auricula-judae were analyzed, and changes of dietary risk of the residues were assessed. The pesticide residue concentrations increased by 2.8–15.4 times after drying, indicating drying could increase the dietary risk of Auricularia auricula-judae. Different rehydrating conditions, including temperature, duration, and solutions were investigated and compared. The removal rates were the highest (67%–96%) when the Auricularia auricula-judae was rehydrated in clear water at 20 °C for 2h, and the dietary risk could be further reduced for some pesticides using 1.0% NaHCO 3 solution for the rehydration. For the scientific application of chlorothalonil, a thorough understanding of chlorothalonil deposition, distribution, and dissipation on pakchoi is required so as to reduce its application dosage. In this study, the effects of the application dosage, application season, planting environment, initial deposition, field dissipation and metabolism of pakchoi were investigated. The chlorothalonil deposition amount gradually increased with increasing dosage and application frequency. The deposition law in each application strategy was leaf > edible parts > petiole > planting soil. The half-lives of chlorothalonil in pakchoi in May, October, and December were 2.86–5.79, 3.08–5.87, and 6.41–11.32 days, respectively. The deposition concentration and dissipation half-life of chlorothalonil in different parts of pakchoi and the planting soil in greenhouse environments were higher than those in open-field environments. The initial deposition concentration and half-life of chlorothalonil in pakchoi gradually decreased from north to south: Beijing >Hefei >Changsha in April and Hefei >Sanya in December. Chlorothalonil can be converted to metabolite I (C 8 HCl 3 N 2 O) in pakchoi plants, which can gradually dechlorinate to produce metabolite II (C 8 HCl 3 N 2), metabolite III (C 8 H 2 Cl 2 N 2), and metabolite IV (C 8 H 3 ClN 2). Within an application interval of 7 days, the long-term consumption of pakchoi leaves and edible parts poses unacceptable dietary risks. Freshwater systems near highly urbanized areas are extremely susceptible to emerging contaminants (ECs), yet their stereoscopic persistence in aquatic ecosystems and related risks remain largely unknown. Herein, we characterized the multi-mediums distribution of 63 ECs in Baiyangdian Lake, the biggest urban lake in the North of China. We identified variations in the seasonal patterns of aquatic EC levels, which decreased in water and increased in sediment from wet to dry seasons. Surprisingly, higher concentrations and a greater variety of ECs were detected in reeds than in aquatic animals, indicating that plants may contribute to the transferring of ECs. Source analysis indicated that human activity considerably affected the distribution and risk of ECs. The dietary risk of ECs is most pronounced among children following the intake of aquatic products, especially with a relatively higher risk associated with fish consumption. Besides, a comprehensive scoring ranking method was proposed, and 9 ECs, including BPS and macrolide antibiotics, are identified as prioritized control pollutants. Tris(2,4-di- tert -butylphenyl) phosphite (AO168), an organophosphite antioxidant, can be oxidized to tris(2,4-di- tert -butylphenyl) phosphate (AO168 = O) during the production, processing, and application of plastics. AO168 = O can be further transformed to bis(2,4-di- tert -butylphenyl) phosphate and 2,4-di- tert -butylphenol. Here, we discovered the contamination of AO168 and its transformation products in dairy products for the first time. More samples contained AO168 (mean concentration: 8.78 ng/g wet weight [ww]), bis(2,4-di- tert -butylphenyl) phosphate (mean:11.1 ng/g ww) and 2,4-di- tert -butylphenol (mean: 46.8 ng/g ww) than AO168 = O (mean: 40.2 ng/g ww). The concentrations of AO168 and its transformation products were significantly correlated, and differed with the packaging material and storage conditions of the product. Estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of AO168 and its transformation products were calculated. Although the overall dietary risks were below one, transformation products accounted for 96.7% of the total hazard quotients. The high-exposure EDIs of total AO168 were above the threshold of toxicological concern (300 ng/kg bw/day), and deserve continual monitoring. Milk and its derivatives are basic foods in Peru, especially for children. The Junín region, in the central Andes, is one of the leading dairy basins. However, the safety of milk is affected by mining–metallurgical activities, wastewater dumping, organic residues, and inappropriate use of organophosphate fertilizers in agriculture whose contaminants reach the food chain, putting human health at risk. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bioaccumulation of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and arsenic (As) in milk produced on a representative farm in central Peru, which uses phosphorous agrochemicals and is adjacent to a small mineral concentrator and a municipal solid waste dump, and to evaluate the potential risk for the Peruvian population of 2–85 years considering three levels of daily intake by age, which constitutes the innovative contribution of the study. These three elements were quantified by flame atomic absorption spectrometry following standardized procedures. The mean contents of Pb (0.062 mg/kg), Cd (0.014 mg/kg), and As (0.030 mg/kg) in milk exceeded the maximum limits allowed by international standards. At all ages, the target quotient hazard followed a descending order of As > Pb > Cd, being > 1 in the case of As. The hazard index was >1 for children under 7, 9, and 11 years of age in the scenarios of low, medium, and high milk intake. The information is valid for formulating policies to prevent adverse health effects and develop standards and awareness programs, monitoring, and control of heavy metals in milk in Peru.

Objective: To describe changes over time in dietary risk factor prevalence and non-communicable disease in Pacific Island Countries (PICTs).Methods: Secondary analysis of data from 21,433 adults aged 25-69, who participated in nationally representative World Health Organization STEPs surveys in 8 Pacific Island Countries and Territories between 2002 and 2019. Outcomes of interest were changes in consumption of fruit and vegetables, hypertension, overweight and obesity, and hypercholesterolaemia over time. Also, salt intake and sugar sweetened beverage consumption for those countries that measured these.Results: Over time, the proportion of adults consuming less than five serves of fruit and vegetables per day decreased in five countries, notably Tonga. From the most recent surveys, average daily intake of sugary drinks was high in Kiribati (3.7 serves), Nauru (4.1) and Tokelau (4.0) and low in the Solomon Islands (0.4). Average daily salt intake was twice that recommended by WHO in Tokelau (10.1 g) and Wallis and Futuna (10.2 g). Prevalence of overweight/obesity did not change over time in most countries but increased in Fiji and Tokelau. Hypertension prevalence increased in 6 of 8 countries. The prevalence of hypercholesterolaemia decreased in the Cook Islands and Kiribati and increased in the Solomon Islands and Tokelau.Conclusions: While some Pacific countries experienced reductions in diet related NCD risk factors over time, most did not. Most Pacific adults (88%) do not consume enough fruit and vegetables, 82% live with overweight or obesity, 33% live with hypertension and 40% live with hypercholesterolaemia. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed in a variety of coastal marine seafood from the Wentai fishing area, which is in proximity to highly urbanized areas and provides a significant portion of the marine aquatic products in Eastern China. Specifically, total PAHs ranged from 320 to 2500 ng/g d.w., whereas carcinogenic PAHs ranged from 21 to 92 ng/g d.w. According to the source diagnosis, the PAHs in the seafood were generally from sources highly related to fossil fuel. Thus, it is necessary to control the unintentional use of fossil fuels and optimize the energy structure in the terrestrial area nearby. Moreover, the food chain structure and the environmental behavior of PAHs through the food chain, which are relevant to dietary risk, were assessed. The δ15N values fell in a narrow range, which indicates a relatively short food chain, which is due to overfishing in this area. Furthermore, in this shortened food chain, the trophic magnification factors (TMFs) ranged from 0.23 to 6.6, which were generally higher than those in more complex food chains. The cancer risk (ILCR) ranged from 2.2 × 10−8 to 2.2 × 10−6. It is noted that the carcinogenic risk of consuming yellow croaker, which is one of the most popular seafood among people on the east coast of China, was the highest. In conclusion, trophic magnification implied a possible elevated risk through this marine food chain, and overfishing may have increased the uncertainty associated with TMF estimations. BackgroundWith the rapid improvement in economy and lifestyle, dietary risk-related diseases have become a public health problem worldwide. However, the health effects of dietary risk over time have not been fully clarified in China. Here, we explored the temporal trends in the death burden of unhealthy dietary habits in China and benchmark dietary risk challenges in China to G20 member states.MethodSex–age-specific burdens due to dietary risk in China were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2019, including annual numbers and age-standardized rates (ASRs) of death, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and summary exposure values (SEVs) during 1990–2019. The variation trend of ASRs was evaluated by estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs).ResultBetween 1990 and 2019, the number of dietary risk-based death and DALYs increased significantly in China with an overall downward trend of ASDR and ASR-DALYs. Ischemic heart disease was the first cause of death from diet, followed by stroke and colon and rectum cancers. Chinese men were at greater risk than women for diet-related death and DALYs. Further analysis showed that a high sodium diet has always been the “No. 1 killer” that threatens the health of Chinese residents. The death burden of dietary risk demonstrated an increasing trend with age, and the peak was reached in people over 75 years. Compared with other G20 countries, Japan and South Korea have the most similar dietary patterns to China with the character of high sodium intake. Notably, decreased whole grain intake, as the primary dietary risk attributable to death and DALYs burden in the United States and European countries, had already ranked second in China's dietary risks.ConclusionChina's dietary burden cannot be ignored. Chinese residents should pay more attention to the collocation of dietary nutrients, especially men and 75+ years (elderly) people. Targeted dietary adjustments can significantly reduce deaths and DALYs in China.

ABSTRACT: Repeated presence of strawberries amongst produce with pesticide residues results in questionings related to the risks involved by its consumption. Deterministic and probabilistic risk assessment methods might be used depending on the available data. In the present study, both methods were used to estimate risks of pesticide intake by strawberry consumption. Strawberry samples along two years were analyzed via the multiresidue method. Results of active ingredients (a.i.) concentrations were organized and used for calculations for intake estimates. On the deterministic method, intake was calculated based on the data of a.i. concentration and consumption data coming from an online questionnaire and body weight between 5 and 70 kg. On the probabilistic method, the concentrations of a.i. and body weight of 60 kg were evaluated in two scenarios: a) consumption data from an online questionnaire or b) consumption data retrieved from Family Budget Survey of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. In the 62 strawberry samples, 38 a.i. were quantified and in 25 samples the residue analyses were considered satisfactory and 37 had an unsatisfactory outcome. In the deterministic approach, 23% of the a.i. had a calculated intake higher than the acceptable daily intake (ADI) and risk concentrated in body weights between 5 and 30 kg. The risk is low when considering a body weight of 60 kg. All a.i. tested in the first scenario of the probabilistic method pointed towards some possibility of intake being higher than the ADI. In the second scenario, only the a.i. procymidone exceeded the ADI.

Background: A method is now available to quantify the number of pesticide residues and relative pesticide dietary risks in individual servings of food. The Dietary Risk Index (DRI) system combines the results of United States and United Kingdom pesticide residue testing programs with data on food serving sizes and each pesticide's chronic Reference Dose or Acceptable Daily Intake. Chronic DRI values are a ratio: the amount of residue in a serving of food relative to the maximum amount allowed by regulators. Results: The DRI system generates individual sample tables reporting the number of residues detected and individual pesticide and aggregate-pesticide DRI values in specific, individual samples of food. It is the first such system to do so worldwide. Output tables produce accurate estimates of real-world dietary risks based on current toxicology data and exposure benchmarks set by regulators. System outputs allow assessment of the distribution of pesticide-dietary risks across foods and pesticides and demonstrate that dietary risk levels are highly skewed. A large number of samples pose moderate, low, or very-low risks, and relatively few samples pose high or very-high risks. Conclusions: The DRI system provides the food industry, regulators and analysts with a simple, accessible online tool to assess pesticide dietary-risk levels by food, by pesticide, as a function of country of origin, and on food grown on conventional versus organic farms. DRI system output tables show that the number of residues in a sample of food is a consistently poor indicator of dietary risk levels. Background: In recent years, metabolic products of pesticides have gained much attention due to their substantial characteristics as organic pollutants. So far, the behavior and metabolite levels of pesticide metabolites in crops have not been characterized well. In the present study, four registered pesticides (imidacloprid, diafenthiuron, malathion and chlorothalonil) were applied on tea plants in Fujian and Sichuan to characterize their metabolites residue pattern and dietary risk. Results: Four pesticides dissipated first‐order kinetics in the fresh tea leaves with the half‐lives of 1.4–3.8 days. Nine metabolites were detected in the fresh tea leaves and green tea after processing. The metabolites residues showed an increasing trend first and then declined after treatment, and reached the maximum near the half‐lives of pesticide. Compared with the parent pesticide, the total residue and acute risk (included the metabolites) increased by 1.7–105.2 times. Some metabolites, especially those whose parent pesticides have high water solubility and low Log Kow, will be more easily transferred to tea infusion. Conclusion: Pesticides were metabolized rapidly on tea plants after application, but the production of metabolites increased the health risk of tea consumption. The dairy basin of the Mantaro River located in the centre of Peru faces serious anthropogenic disturbances as it receives emissions and discharges from the metallurgical mining activity located in the headwaters of the basin and milk contaminated with lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) endangers the environmental and human health, especially children. To measure the concentrations of Pb and Cd in milk and the dangers of their consumption in the Peruvian population, 40 milk samples were collected and quantified by atomic absorption spectrometry. The mean concentration of Pb in milk was 15 ± 2.6 µg/kg, which represented 75% of the Maximum Limit (ML), and that of Cd was 505 ± 123 µg/kg, which exceeded the ML by more than 194 times. The estimated weekly intake of Pb for people aged 2–85 years was below the Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake (PTWI) references, determining risk coefficients (CRD) < 1. Weekly Cd intake was much higher than the PTWIs and CRDs were between 14 and 34, indicating that consumers would experience carcinogenic health effects, with children being at higher risk than adults, therefore, milk from the area is not safe for consumption. Cd would be transferred mainly through the soil (water)-grass-milk pathway, due to its presence in irrigation water and in fertilizers that contain Cd. The main pathway for Pb entry would be air-soil (water)-milk grass, from the fine particles emitted into the air by the mining-metallurgical activity, developed approximately 90 km from the study area. This study investigated elimination of the herbicide pendimethalin using an integrated rice and Procambarus clarkii breeding model of indoor and outdoor (pond culture) exposure tests. The pendimethalin levels in 484 samples from the primary rice and P. clarkii integrated breeding areas in Hubei province were monitored, and dietary risk assessments of pendimethalin were calculated. Pendimethalin was quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry, and detection levels were linear in the range of 1.0 to 10.0 μg/L, and peak areas were positively correlated with concentration, with a correlation coefficient of 0.9996. Recoveries ranged from 86.9 to 103.5%, and the limit of quantitation was 2.5 × 10−4 μg/L in water, and 1 × 10−2 μg/kg in tissues, sediments, and waterweeds. The dissipation rate of pendimethalin in tissues and water followed first-order kinetics, with half-lives of 0.51–5.64 d. In 484 samples taken from aquaculture farms, pendimethalin was detected in 8.67% of the samples at levels in the range of 1.95 to 8.26 μg/kg in Hubei province from 2018 to 2020. The maximum residue limit of pendimethalin in P. clarkii has not been established in China, but our dietary risk assessments indicated that consumption of P. clarkii from integrated rice farms was acceptable. Neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) have caused widespread contamination of multiple environmental media and posed a serious threat to ecosystem health by accidently injuring non-target species. This study collected samples of water, soil, and rice plant tissues in a water-soil-plant system of paddy fields after spaying imidacloprid (IMI), thiamethoxam (THM), and clothianidin (CLO) to analyze their distribution characteristics and migration procedures and to assess related dietary risks of rice consumption. In the paddy water, the concentrations of NNIs showed a dynamic change of increasing and then decreasing during about a month period, and the initial deposition of NNIs showed a trend of CLO (3.08 μg/L) > THM (2.74 μg/L) > IMI (0.97 μg/L). In paddy soil, the concentrations of the three NNIs ranged from 0.57 to 68.3 ng/g, with the highest residual concentration at 2 h after application, and the concentration trend was opposite to that in paddy water. The initial deposition amounts of IMI, THM, and CLO in the root system were 5.19, 3.02, and 5.24 μg/g, respectively, showing a gradual decrease over time. In the plant, the initial deposition amounts were 19.3, 9.36, and 52.6 μg/g for IMI, THM, and CLO, respectively, exhibiting concentration trends similar to those in the roots. Except for IMI in soil, the dissipation of the NNIs conformed to the first-order kinetic equation in paddy water, soil, and plant. The results of bioconcentration factors (BCFs) and translocation factor (TF) indicated that NNIs can be bi-directionally transported in plants through leaf absorption and root uptake. The risk of NNIs intake through rice consumption was low for all age groups, with a slightly higher risk of exposure in males than in females. Health behaviors of higher education students can be negatively influenced by stressful events. The global COVID-19 pandemic presents a unique opportunity to characterize and compare health behaviors across multiple countries and to examine how these behaviors are shaped by the pandemic experience. Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in universities in China, Ireland, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, the Netherlands and the United States (USA) were recruited into this cross-sectional study. Eligible students filled out an online survey comprised of validated tools for assessing sleep quality and duration, dietary risk, alcohol misuse and physical activity between late April and the end of May 2020. Health behaviors were fairly consistent across countries, and all countries reported poor sleep quality. However, during the survey period, the COVID-19 pandemic influenced the health behaviors of students in European countries and the USA more negatively than Asian countries, which could be attributed to the differences in pandemic time course and caseloads. Students who experienced a decline in sleep quality during the COVID-19 pandemic had higher dietary risk scores than students who did not experience a change in sleep quality (p = 0.001). Improved sleep quality was associated with less sitting time (p = 0.010). Addressing sleep issues among higher education students is a pressing concern, especially during stressful events. These results support the importance of making education and behavior-based sleep programming available for higher education students in order to benefit students’ overall health.

UPLC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS were used to establish a method to simultaneously determine various pesticide residues in Panax notoginseng. Results showed that the limits of detection of 249 pesticides were all 5–10 μg/kg. The detection rate of pesticides in 121 P. notoginseng samples was 93.39%, and 19 pesticides were detected. According to the US Code of Federal Regulations, the Chinese Pharmacopoeia recommended algorithm, and the Japanese “positive list system”, the pass rates of pesticide residues were 100%, 99.17%, and 89.26%, respectively. The chronic risk quotient (ADI%) and acute risk quotient (ARfD%) of P. notoginseng were 0.00–0.12% and 0.00–0.15%, respectively. In summary, the detection method established in this study can be used for routine analysis of various P. notoginseng pesticide residues. The pesticide residues in the main root samples of P. notoginseng were at a safe level and unlikely pose health risks to consumers.

Elaborating on the residual fate of fluxapyroxad and its metabolites based on their nationwide application was vital to protect the human population from their hazardous effects. In this study, a rapid and sensitive analytical method was developed to trace fluxapyroxad and two of its metabolites in peanut matrices using an ultrahigh chromatography method coupled with mass spectrometry (UHPLC–MS/MS) within 3.5 min. The occurrence, pharmacokinetic degradation and terminal magnitudes of fluxapyroxad were reflected in the original deposition of 8.41–38.15 mg/kg, half–lives of 2.5–8.6 d and final concentrations of 0.004–37.38 mg/kg in peanut straw. The total concentrations of fluxapyroxad in peanut straw (0.04–39.28 mg/kg) were significantly higher than those in peanut kernels (N–(3′,4′,5′–trifluoro[1,1′–biphenyl]–2–yl)–1H–pyrazole–4–carboxamide (M700F008, 0.02–5.69 mg/kg) and further N–glycosylated to 3–(difluoromethyl)–1–(ß–D–glucopyranosyl)–N–(3′,4′,5′–triflurobipheny–2–yl)–1H–pyrzaole–4–carboxamide (M700F048, 0.04–39.28 mg/kg).The risk quotients of the total fluxapyroxad for the urban groups were significantly higher than those for the rural groups, and were both negatively correlated with the age of the groups, although both acute (ARfD%, 0.006–0.012%) and chronic (ADI%, 0.415–1.289%) risks are acceptable for the human population. The high-potential health risks of fluxapyroxad should be continuously emphasized for susceptible toddlers (1–3 years), especially those residing in urban areas.

Pesticides protect crops against pests, and green pesticides are referred to as effective, safe, and eco-friendly pesticides that are sustainably synthesized and manufactured (i.e., green chemistry production). Owing to their high efficacy, safety, and ecological compatibility, green pesticides have become a main direction of global pesticide research and development (R&D). Green pesticides attract attention because of their close association with the quality and safety of agricultural produce. In this review, we briefly define green pesticides and outline their significance, current registration, commercialization, and applications in China, the European Union, and the United States. Subsequently, we engage in an in-depth analysis of the impact of newly launched green pesticides on the environment and ecosystems. Finally, we focus on the potential risks of dietary exposure to green pesticides and the possible hazards of chronic toxicity and carcinogenicity. The status of and perspective on green pesticides can hopefully inspire green pesticide R&D and applications to ensure agricultural production and safeguard human and ecological health.

BACKGROUND Thiophanate‐methyl and its metabolite carbendazim are broad‐spectrum fungicides used on many crops. The residues of these chemicals could result in potential environmental and human health problems. Therefore, investigations of the dissipation and residue behaviors of thiophanate‐methyl and its metabolite carbendazim on cowpeas and associated dietary risk assessments are essential for the safety of agricultural products. RESULTS: A simple analytical approach using liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry was developed and validated for the determination of thiophanate‐methyl and carbendazim concentrations in cowpeas. Good linearity (R2 > 0.998) was obtained, and the recoveries and relative standard deviations were 80.0–104.7% and 1.4–5.2%, respectively. The dissipation rates of thiophanate‐methyl, carbendazim and total carbendazim were high (half‐lives of 1.61–2.46 days) and varied in the field cowpea samples because of the different weather conditions and planting patterns. Based on the definition of thiophanate‐methyl, the terminal residues of total carbendazim in cowpea samples were below the maximum residue limits set by Japan for other legumes. The acute and chronic risk quotients of three analytes were 0.0–27.6% in cowpea samples gathered from all terminal residue treatments, which were below 100%. CONCLUSION: An optimized approach for detecting thiophanate‐methyl and carbendazim in cowpeas was applied for the investigation of field‐trial samples. The potential acute and chronic dietary risks of thiophanate‐methyl, carbendazim and total carbendazim to the health of Chinese consumers were low. These results could guide the safe and proper use of thiophanate‐methyl in cowpeas and offer data for the dietary risk assessment of thiophanate‐methyl in cowpeas. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry. Background: Colorectal cancer remains a public health problem worldwide. Dietary risk factors play a key role in the carcinogenesis and progression of colorectal cancer. This study aimed to explore the geographical and temporal trends in various dietary factor-related colorectal cancers.Methods: Data were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 study, including the deaths, disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), age-standardized rate (ASR), and summary exposure value (SEV) among 4 world regions, 11 age groups, 21 regions, and 204 countries and territories between 1990 and 2019. The estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs) were calculated to evaluate the variation trend of ASR.Results: Dietary factors were the leading cause of colorectal cancer death and DALY rate, regardless of age. Dietary factor-related deaths and DALYs accounted for 32 and 34% of global colorectal cancer, respectively. Further analysis showed that low whole grain intake remained the leading cause of cancer death and DALY rate, followed by milk and calcium. Diets that were low in whole grains, milk, and calcium accounted for 81.61% of deaths and 81.64% of DALYs. Deaths and DALYs of dietary factors related to colorectal cancer grew by half from 1990 to 2019. All ASRs remained higher for men than women. Asia carried the highest colorectal cancer burden attributed to dietary risks, especially for East Asia [age-standardized death rate (ASDR): EAPC = 1.15, 95% CI:0.88–1.42; DALY: EAPC = 1.08, 95% CI:0.82–1.34]. The heavy burden also existed in high-middle and middle socio-demographic index (SDI) quintiles. China has always had the highest deaths and DALYs of colorectal cancer attributable to dietary risks, followed by the USA, India, and Japan.Conclusions: Large variations existed in the dietary risk-related colorectal cancer burdens among sexes, regions, and countries. More targeted interventions to address modifiable dietary risk factors would save 32% of deaths and 34% of DALYs for colorectal cancer.

Background and Objectives: Shift work has a significant influence on the mental health of workers. Nursing is characterised by a rotational work system. This study aimed to determine whether there was a link between adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) and the risk of suffering an eating disorder (ED) in nurses according to their work shift. Materials and Methods: A total of 240 women (nurses and nursing assistants) were evaluated and completed the PREDIMED-PLUS questionnaire on adherence to the MD and the EAT-26 (Eating Attitude Test, 26 items). Results: The results indicate that there are no differences in adherence to the MD depending on the work shift, being that adherence to the diet is already low. Statistically significant differences appear depending on the work shift in the following dimensions: restrictive behaviours and bulimia subscales (presenting higher scores in the 7-h rotating shift versus the fixed morning shift or 12-h rotating shift) and for total EAT-26 score. Conclusion: Whilst they do not condition adherence to a MD, the nursing shifts that are the most changing in terms of time patterns may condition restrictive behaviours and compensatory risk behaviours related to an ED.
