The emerging paradigm of personalised bone repair embodies a transformative triad comprising bio-inspired design, digital fabrication, and the exploration of innovative materials. The increasing average age of the population, alongside the rising incidence of fractures associated with age-related conditions such as osteoporosis, necessitates the development of customised, efficient, and minimally invasive treatment modalities as alternatives to conventional methods (e.g., autografts, allografts, Ilizarov distraction, and bone fixators) typically employed to promote bone regeneration. A promising innovative technique involves the use of cellularised scaffolds incorporating mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). The selection of materials—ranging from metals and ceramics to synthetic or natural bio-derived polymers—combined with a design inspired by natural sources (including bone, corals, algae, shells, silk, and plants) facilitates the replication of geometries, architectures, porosities, biodegradation capabilities, and mechanical properties conducive to physiological bone regeneration. To mimic internal structures and geometries for construct customisation, scaffolds can be designed using Computer-aided Design (CAD) and fabricated via 3D-printing techniques. This approach not only enables precise control over external shapes and internal architectures but also accommodates the use of diverse materials that improve biological performance and provide economic advantages. Finally, advanced numerical models are employed to simulate, analyse, and optimise the complex processes involved in personalised bone regeneration, with computational predictions validated against experimental data and in vivo studies to ascertain the model's ability to predict the recovery of bone shape and function. Purpose: The Assistive Technology (AT) Open Platform supports people with disabilities, older people, and developers in co-creating new assistive products outside the business realm. To address dissatisfaction with and non-adoption of commercial assistive products, the National Rehabilitation Centre in South Korea created an AT Open Platform as an open-source AT sharing platform to research and develop appropriate assistive technology suitable for users' needs. The emerging concept of AT Open Platform is new for both assistive product users and developers in South Korea. The Extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2) was utilised to understand the factors influencing the adoption of the AT Open Platform and to gain further insights on its design and future use. Materials and methods: Interviews were conducted with six potential AT Open Platform users to develop a questionnaire for predicting behavioural intention. Subsequently, we surveyed 175 potential users to validate the UTAUT2. Results: The results revealed that behavioural intention was significantly predicted by social influence, performance expectancy, facilitating conditions, and hedonic motivation. Conclusions: The AT Open Platform should focus on both online and offline platforms to educate and facilitate the co-creation of ATs for assistive product users and makers. This study, which targeted assistive product users and developers, has significant implications for policymakers and future research in using and adopting the AT Open Platform as it reflects the actual voices of the platform's stakeholders. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION: To address the issues of dissatisfaction and non-adoption of commercial assistive products, assistive technology platforms are established for the research and development of appropriate assistive technologies suitable for meeting user needs; the results are shared as open-source assistive technology. A survey was conducted with a targeted sample of assistive technology product users and developers. The study results are significant as they represent the perspectives of key stakeholders in the assistive technology platform. The study findings are expected to play an important role in the application and diffusion of the assistive technology platform in South Korea. The construction industry faces a growing challenge in reducing its environmental impact through sustainable design and practices. Buildings are responsible for a significant share of CO2 emissions and pollution, with lighting alone accounting for roughly 15% of global electricity consumption according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). A key element in achieving sustainability is optimizing daylight penetration within buildings, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and associated energy demands. This research introduces a novel approach by optimizing the geometry of a building's exterior skin fabricated with adobe by 3D-printed molds. This method aims to achieve a balance between structural integrity, improved daylight availability within the building, and the inherent sustainability benefits of using adobe, an earth-based material. The proposed design procedure starts with a 2D geometry and applies it to the building's exterior. The framework then optimizes the geometry to maintain structural stability while maximizing daylight penetration into the interior. Importantly, this optimization considers the specific material properties of adobe walls created using 3D-printed metal molds. By integrating 3D-printed adobe molds and daylight optimization, a framework is offered with a potential path towards sustainable building design with improved energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact. Although research has touted the value of making in educational settings, scant work has been done in formal school contexts utilizing quantitative methods. This could be attributed to the various challenges in integrating making in school settings. To fill in the gap, this study presents an approach to integrate making into science classes at the 3rd to 5th grade levels in a U.S. public school for four consecutive years (2015–2019). We examined the effect of the program on students' self-beliefs (self-efficacy, motivation, and self-concept) using a longitudinal quasi-experimental design. We also examined the effect of making on students' knowledge and skills using state testing data. Results suggest that when averaged across post school year surveys, students in maker classes (vs. control) reported higher self-efficacy beliefs in science and making as well as more interests in STEM-related careers. Moreover, over two school years, we observed that students in the control group experienced declines on some of our variables while our maker students did not. The study presents an integration of cob with robotic processes. By challenging conventional monolithic earth-building methods, the study proposes the use of spatial nonplanar formations that are robotically fabricated, presenting an alternative geometric language for earth construction. The research methodology is derived from existing factors within the robotic lab, encompassing both constant and variable parameters. Through an experimental approach, the variables are systematically manipulated while observing the outcomes to identify patterns and relationships. Incremental refinements to the research conditions result in an optimal equilibrium state within the defined lab parameters. An empirical investigation approach serves as the foundation for controlling the printing process; wherein an iterative adjustment of the robot extrusion parameters is based on the behaviour of the deposited material. The outcome is several robotically printed cob nonplanar prototypes. Depending on their geometric formations and complexity, the printing process combined three variations: continuous, intervals, and modular. The latter enabled the production of a cob arch, serving as proof of feasibility for the creation of modular cob structures through a segmented assembly process. The study contributes to expanding the possibilities of cob construction by leveraging robotic technologies and paving the way for innovative applications of cob in contemporary architecture practices. While maker platforms, such as FabLabs and Makerspaces, are commonly perceived as drivers for transformative trajectories, little is known about how the dynamics of experimental collective agency are mobilizing transformative capacities that foster change on the local level. This paper contributes to the understanding of collective innovation dynamics of maker platforms that aim to support collective experimentation and translate novel practices to incumbent institutions on the local level. By drawing on the strategic niche management literature, a comparative case study of six maker platforms in Germany is conducted. Findings indicate three relevant modes of translation that could be identified: Firstly, translation by active shielding and institutionalized adaption emphasizes the role of harbouring universities in fencing off market pressures and offering events as well as workshops to regime actors. Secondly, translation by enabling learning mechanisms highlights the effect of implementing proper formats for assessment and learning on mutual translation. Thirdly, translation by sustained cooperation and coordination between maker platforms and local institutions stresses capacities for cooperation and a demand-oriented coordination between maker platforms and incumbent institutions. The importance of geometrical control of three dimensional (3D) printable concrete without the support of formwork is widely acknowledged. In this study, a numerical model based on computational fluid dynamics was developed to evaluate the geometrical quality of a 3D printed layer. The numerical results were compared, using image analysis, with physical cross-sectional sawn samples. The influence of printing parameters (printing speed, nozzle height, and nozzle diameter) and the rheological behavior of printed materials (yield stress), on the geometrical quality of one printed layer was investigated. In addition, the yield zone of the printed layer was analyzed, giving insights on the critical factors for geometrical control in 3D concrete printing. Digital fabrication techniques, in recent decades, have provided the basis of a sustainable revolution in the construction industry. However, selecting the digital fabrication method in terms of manufacturability and functionality requirements is a complex problem. This paper presents alternatives and criteria for selection of digital fabrication techniques by adopting the multi-criteria decision-making technique. The alternatives considered in the study are concrete three-dimensional (3D) printing, shotcrete, smart dynamic casting, material intrusion, mesh molding, injection concrete 3D printing, and thin forming techniques. The criteria include formwork utilization, reinforcement incorporation, geometrical complexity, material enhancement, assembly complexity, surface finish, and build area. It demonstrates different multi-criteria decision-making techniques, with both subjective and objective weighting methods. The given ranking is based on the current condition of digital fabrication in the construction industry. The study reveals that in the selection of digital fabrication techniques, the criteria including reinforcement incorporation, build area, and geometrical complexity play a pivotal role, collectively accounting for nearly 70% of the overall weighting. Among the evaluated techniques, concrete 3D printing emerged as the best performer, however the shotcrete and mesh molding techniques in the second and third positions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Numerous techniques and technologies exist to automate construction-related tasks, which include the latest three-dimensional concrete printing (3DCP) methodology. These automation techniques seek to solve the entrenched problems in construction, such as declining productivity, shortage of skilled workers, ineffectiveness in project management, unsustainability, and the increase in construction demand. The 3DCP has further benefits, such as quicker construction times, design freedom, and more predictability. However, there is resistance to adopting 3DCP in the industry and by the market. With experience from a 3DCP organization and a case study on a 3DCP villa, this paper presents the major challenges that hinder this technology's adoption and use, important lessons learned from the villa construction, and highlights of the local community's critical feedback. Sustainability and limitations in embedded reinforcement are the main obstacles in digital fabrication with concrete. This study proposed a 3D printable fiber-reinforced calcined clay-limestone-based cementitious material (FR-LC3). The binder systems incorporating calcined clay (CC) and limestone filler (LF) were optimized by determining the flow characteristics and water retention ability of the paste. The effect of fiber volume on the key fresh and mechanical properties of the fiber-reinforced mortars made with the optimized binder was evaluated. A combination of offline assessments and inline printing were employed to investigate the printability of the FR-LC3 with various binder systems and viscosity-modifying admixture (VMA) dosages. The results revealed that the binary system with 20% CC and the ternary system containing 30% CC and 15% LF were highly advantageous, with enhanced packing density, robustness, and water retention ability. Incorporating 2% 6-mm steel fiber contributed to the highest 28-day compressive and flexural strengths and toughness without significantly compromising the fluidity. Finally, the developed FR-LC3 mixtures were successfully printed using an extrusion-based 3D printer. The LF addition in the ternary system decreased the maximum buildable height of a single-wall printed object while reducing the SP/VMA ratio significantly increased the height due to enhanced yield stress and thixotropy. The paper elaborates on critical "design decisions" of a series of digital fabrication micro-courses offered as an optional addition to the full one- or two-semester programs on engineering design. It presents the results of an evaluation regarding the learning outcomes and 21st-century skills acquired by the students. The evaluation indicates that the courses convey practical making skills and contribute to 21st-century skills like self-efficacy, self-initiative and learning competence. The result of the work can inspire other universities and design factories to set up their device training courses similarly to gain this additional benefit.

Building materials that are reused in a circular economy context are often non-standard because previous usage has altered their original properties. Material matching algorithms aid design and construction by matching components in stock with those needed in a design. The efficiency of these matches is assessed based on factors such as waste, logistics, and structural applicability. In this paper, we evaluate the efficacy and practicality for design evolution of construction-relevant optimisation goals. We evaluate goals based on their construction-time and design time results, using a software pipeline optimising both the mapping and design. One design was also constructed based on the optimised matching, to assess additional considerations when working component-specific designs. Based on difficulties and inefficiencies observed during fabrication, we propose two alternate matching strategies and compare their effects on the chosen factors. The study reveals that component allocation systems frequently overlook the need for both contingency planning and redundancy in the construction process. Additionally, inaccuracies in inventory tracking can significantly compromise the feasibility of the planned design. The stability of these design assistive techniques strongly affects their ability to be applied in large-volume projects. This implies the need for a new set of objective factors to be incorporated into existing methods of design optimisation.

Several research initiatives across the European Union investigated the application of off-site prefabrication strategies for energy refurbishment of buildings. Although the results obtained, none of these projects offer a solution for reducing the overall cost.This paper presents the results of the ‘LegnAttivo’ project, an applied research initiative that investigates applications of Mass Customization and Design for Manufacturability to reduce the cost of prefabricated timber-based façades for energy refurbishment. Applying a Design Science Research approach, the research develops a design prototype of timber-based façade elements for the energy refurbishment of the Italian building stock. Relying on a single case study which is a starting point for future generalizations and extensions of the method, results highlight that applications of Design for Manufacturability combined with Computational Design techniques provide effective and efficient solutions, even under extremely customized requirements, and bring to considerable saves, aligned with the ones measured by the scientific community.

The technology of 3D concrete printing has seen a rapid growth in industrial applications and academic activities over the past decade. 3D Printing is being advertised to address the urgent sustainability and productivity challenges in the field of construction, by reducing the total amount of concrete in buildings or structures, and by producing them in an automated, high-speed and robust manner. Today, however, 3D concrete printing does not yet live up to its full potential. In this contribution, the advancements in recent years are discussed, and the status quo of the technology is assessed from a productivity and sustainability perspective. Finally, recommendations for the next steps in the development towards a higher efficiency and reduced environmental impact are provided.
