ABSTRACT In order to reveal the influence of double arc‐shaped fissure dip angles on the macro‐micro failure and energy evolution laws of rock masses, a numerical model of red sandstone was firstly established using the PFC2D. Moreover, mesoscopic parameters of the numerical model were calibrated based on the uniaxial compression tests on intact and single straight fissure red sandstone specimens. Then, particle flow simulation tests of red sandstone with different arc‐shaped fissure dip angles were carried out. The results show that the peak strength and elastic modulus both increase with the increase of arc‐shaped fissure dip angle α, exhibiting an oblique shear‐tensile failure pattern. Six types of cracks evolved during the instability and rupture of the rock mass with double arc‐shaped fissures. The macroscopic fissures in the rock mass ultimately penetrate along the extension direction of the arc‐shaped fissures. As the arc‐shaped fissure dip angle α increases, the crack evolution is positively correlated with the acoustic emission (AE) of the specimen. When approaching instability failure, the AE ringing count rapidly increases. There is a critical angle limit inflection point for the total energy absorbed by the rock between 60° and 75°, with a total energy increase of about 54%. During instability failure, it is dominated by dissipative energy, with elastic energy as a supplement. This article derived a damage constitutive model of red sandstone with different arc‐shaped fissure dip angles, revealing the damage laws of red sandstone under different arc‐shaped fissure dip angles. In this paper, the effect of dissipative energy arising from bulk-viscosity on the collapse of a self-gravitating viscoelastic medium permeated with a nonuniform magnetic field and rotation is analyzed using the standard Jeans mechanism. A local solution of the system of nondimensional linearized perturbation equations, having variable coefficients, is obtained using the normal modes analysis method. The Jeans instability criteria are derived from the characteristic equation (valid under the kinetic and hydrodynamic limits) for parallel and perpendicular wave propagation, modified due to bulk viscosity and Alfvén wave velocity. From the calculated critical values of Jeans wavenumber, it is found that the bulk-viscosity and magnetic field have stabilizing influence on the onset of gravitational instability for each mode of wave propagation. It is observed that the nonuniform rotation does not affect the instability criterion, however, the rotation strongly suppresses the growth rate of the Jeans instability in both the hydrodynamic and kinetic limits. Also, a comparison of the impact of various rotational and magnetic field orientations on the growth rate in viscoelastic fluid is also presented. From the analysis, it is also observed that the presence of dissipative energy reduces the growth rate, in both modes of wave propagation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the surrounding rocks of underground tunnels are frequently suffered from the dynamic disturbance of mechanical percussion drilling and explosive blasting, it is significantly meaningful to investigate the mechanical properties and failure behaviors of rock material with a tunnel-shaped opening under dynamic loads. In this work, seven groups of prismatic samples, including the intact samples and the samples with a circular opening of three kinds of diameters, a square opening, a horseshoe-shaped opening and a D-shaped opening, were prepared for dynamic compressive loading. The results show that the prismatic specimens satisfy the stress uniformity condition in impact tests using SHPB testing system with a bar diameter of 50 mm. The weakening effects of the existed openings on the dynamic compressive strength, elastic modulus and peak strain of rocks are closely associated with the size and shape of opening and the loading direction. Based on the energy parameters of the samples, the dissipated energy density of each group of samples can be solved. The failure degree of the samples characterized by dissipated energy density and fractal dimension are in good agreement. Besides, the failure mode of the intact specimen belongs to splitting tensile failure, while that of the pre-holed specimens can be classified as shear-dominated failure due to the coalescence of the openings and the shear cracks occurring along the diagonals of the specimens. The test results provide some insights into the mechanical behavior of rock materials under dynamic loads and lay an important theoretical foundation for support design and rock disaster prevention of underground tunnel.

The tension and slide of surrounding rock are highly inclined to cause dynamic disasters, thus seriously threatening the safety of mine resource recovery. This study proposes a novel method based on the global–local dissipation energy time-series variation coefficient in order to analyze the relationship between local deformation and global stability of rock. The localized light-force monitoring test method is used to analyze the tensile-sliding effect, and the evolution characteristics of the global–local dissipative energy time-series variation coefficient are compared. The results indicate that the strength reduction of rock is affected by the deformation accumulation of the loading displacement field. As for the stable damage specimen, the sliding displacement occurs 5.5 s earlier than tensile displacement, which is 4.4 s longer than the case of the transient damage specimen. The node spring model theory is further proposed to determine whether the global–local dissipation energy relationship of rock under load conformed to the linear function distribution. The global–local dissipation energy time-series variation coefficient range is always in the [1, 0.9] range. Rock instability can be predicted based on the slope and inflection point changes in the time-series variation coefficient curve, and increasing the number of effective monitoring points can significantly improve the monitoring effect and accuracy of the local time-series variation coefficient. As an important component of safe mining space, the roadway surrounding rock is prone to instability due to tensile and sliding failure, which seriously affects the safe and efficient mining of mine resources. Based on global–local energy, a new method of time-series variation coefficient is proposed in this study according to the local tensile and sliding deformation tests. By fitting the rock global–local energy relationship, the internal relationship between the local time-series variation index and the overall stability is determined. The result shows that the point measurement data in practical application are almost invariably local information because the rock deformation and stress data monitored in the roadway surrounding rock are almost reflected in the form of measuring points. Therefore, it is crucial to study the feedback of the local time-series variation coefficient on global stability, which provides an important index for early warnings of surrounding rock instability and failure. According to the linear change rule between the peak elastic strain energy density and confining pressure, the energy density failure criterion of sandstone was established, and the criterion has high precision and few parameters, and the parameters have clear physical meaning. Moreover, the expression of the energy density failure criterion was similar to the classical Hoek-Brown criterion, but its adaptability was more extensive. The strength calculation results for seven different rocks under different confining pressures calculated using the energy density failure criterion were consistent with the experimental values, and the calculation error was smaller than that of the Mohr–Coulomb criterion and Drucker–Prager criterion, verifying the accuracy and applicability of the criterion. Goal. Development of a mathematical model of indirect field-oriented control of a twin-screw electromechanical hydrolyzer. Methodology. The paper presents a mathematical model of Indirect field-oriented control of twin-screw electromechanical hydrolyzer. The mathematical model was developed in the MATLAB / Simulink software environment. The determination of the main parameters of a twin-screw electromechanical hydrolyzer was carried out by developing a finite element model in the Comsol Multiphysics software environment. Results. Based on the results of a mathematical study, graphical dependences of the distribution of magnetic induction in the air gap of a ferromagnetic rotor, a spatial representation of the distribution of magnetic induction on a 3D model of a ferromagnetic rotor of a twin-screw electromechanical hydrolyzer were obtained. The results of finite element modeling were confirmed by a practical study of a mock-up of a ferromagnetic rotor of a twin-screw electromechanical hydrolyzer. By implementing the MATLAB / Simulink model, graphical dependences of the parameters of the ferromagnetic rotor of a twin-screw electromechanical hydrolyzer are obtained under the condition of a stepwise change in the torque and a cyclic change in the angular velocity. Originality. The paper presents an implementation of the method of indirect field-oriented control for controlling the ferromagnetic rotor of a twin-screw electromechanical hydrolyzer. The work takes into account the complex design of the ferromagnetic rotor of a twin-screw electromechanical hydrolyzer. Practical significance. The practical implementation of the results of mathematical modeling makes it possible to achieve effective control of a complex electromechanical system, allows further research to maintain the necessary parameters of the technological process and to develop more complex intelligent control systems in the future.

A series of undrained cyclic axial-torsional shear tests on saturated coral sand and quartz sand under linear, circular, and heart stress paths are performed. The test results show significant differences in liquefaction characteristics for coral sand and quartz sand. A unique relationship between deviatoric strain amplitude and excess pore water pressure ratio (Ru) can be established regardless of cyclic stress paths. The termed cyclic strain path is introduced to describe the generation features of strains, and different failure patterns for various cyclic stress paths can be easily identified. Moreover, the dissipative energy required to liquefaction triggering (Ea1) of coral sand is much larger than that of quartz sand. The generation patterns of dissipative energy with Ru for both sands are almost independent of cyclic stress paths, but the correlation between the cyclic stress ratio (CSR) and the number of cycles required to liquefaction triggering (Nf) is dependent on cyclic stress paths. Using the proxy of the unit cyclic stress ratio (USR) proposed by Chen et al. (2020) instead of the CSR, the correlation between USR and Nf is independent on cyclic stress paths. Abstract Pulsating fracturing, as a new technology for unconventional oil and gas exploration, enables to enhance stimulated reservoir volume (SRV) effectively, which further helps to improve well performance. It is of great importance for the evaluation of fracturing performance and optimization of fracturing parameters by accurately calculating variables from formation impairment during pulsating fracturing treatment. Based on the principle of conservation of energy, a novel theoretical model describing the evolution of rock damage was proposed by analyzing energy evolutionary characteristics from the hysteresis loop of rock stress‐strain curve while the treatment. This model was in a good agreement with experimental data. In this paper, our study indicates that the rock damage is caused by the accumulation of damage in each cyclic loading and unloading process during pulsating fracturing. Moreover, the cumulative rock damage would increase with the increment of the number of cyclic loading and unloading. Conversely, the rock strength is negatively correlated with cyclic number. The cumulative damage variable approximates to one as the rock breaks. Additionally, the frequency and the stress level of pulsating fracturing have an obvious impact on the evolution of rock damage. The optimization of these parameters can help to accelerate the rock damage and reduce the corresponding rock strength. The speed of rock damage can be accelerated with the enhancement of the stress level at the later period of the step loading, which facilitates the increment of cumulative damage variable. Our new model provides a guideline for predicting the initial rock damage during pulsating treatment.

Mastic asphalt is a type of pavement material that has good fluidity and is self-levelling at construction temperature for the bridge deck. There are highly accurate methods and indexes for evaluating fluidity and high-temperature deformation resistance for mastic asphalt-design and construction-control systems. The fatigue cracking is one of the main failure forms of bridge deck pavement. Therefore, the method used to evaluate the fatigue properties of pavement materials is also essential. The anti-deformation capability of the mastic asphalt must be increased, that results in poor fatigue performance and consequent failure of the bridge deck pavement to avoid the rutting of bridge deck pavement. In this study, a simple method is put forward for evaluating mastic asphalt fatigue performance. Impact toughness is defined as the area under the load-displacement curve of a three-point bending beam specimen under impact load to evaluate the fatigue performance of mastic asphalt. The four-point bending beam fatigue test is used to verify the rationality of the impact toughness test method. The results showed that there is a good correlation between the impacts toughness index of mastic asphalt produced under different mixing conditions and the accumulative dissipative energy and fatigue life demonstrated by the four-point bending beam test. Therefore, to evaluate the fatigue performance of mastic asphalt by impact toughness test. Fatigue performance and rut resistance are two ways to evaluate road performance of asphalt mixtures, but they are mutually restrictive. The results show that impact toughness and dynamic stability are inversely correlated. As the impact toughness increases, dynamic stability decreases. Therefore, balancing the fatigue performance and high-temperature rutting resistance of mastic asphalt in the design and quality control is very important.

A nonlinear oscillator with a damping term can model many nonlinear vibration problems. This short remark insights into its physical understanding by the variational principle, which is established by the semi-inverse method. The dissipative energy involved in the variational formulation can be explained by the two-scale thermodynamics. Taylor series method is used to solve its frequency-amplitude relation. The sum of the dissipative energy and energy constant of the GOCE satellite is found by a priori gravity field model at first, and the GOCE dissipative energy is obtained by computing the adjacent epoch difference via the differential method. Then, a gravity field model GOCE-ECP01, which up to the degree and order 80, is recovered by the energy conservation approach from the 103-day precise orbital data of the GOCE satellite collected from November 1, 2009 to January 12, 2010. Finally, the model is compared with existing models EGM96, ITG-CHAMP05S, EIGEN-GRACE2010S, EIGEN-6C and GO_CONS_GCF_2_DIR_R3. The results show that at the same order and degree, the accuracy of model GOCE-EBP01 is higher than those of models EGM96 and ITG-CHAMP05S, but lower than those of models EIGEN-GRACE2010S, EIGEN-6C and GO_CONS_GCF_2_DIR_R3, which is mainly caused by the pole gap.

Polyfunctional electromechanical energy transformers with a ferromagnetic rotor are considered that allow full use of dissipative energy and structural, functional, and thermal integration. The combination in one machine of several technological functions is a feature of such devices. The rotor is cooled with raw material, which is processed. Air and low-melting materials with high thermal capacity and latent melting heat can act as an additional coolant. It is shown that almost all the conditional loss of active power comes from one of the components of net power, this being is heat power, which is used in the technological process. An implementation is presented of the principle of self-regulation in the division of electromagnetic power into two components of the net power: mechanical power flow and heat power. A gearless provision is discussed of low rotation speed and multiple enhancement of transformer torque based on the use of the interaction of direct and reverse fields of master and slave modules, changing the direction of rotation of the field of the slave module and duration of its action. Reverse moment is positive and leads to increased flatness of mechanical characteristics and, consequently, to increased instability of the transformer under load. Dynamic collapses of deeply mined coal rocks are severe threats to miners. To predict the collapses more accurately using electromagnetic radiation (EMR), we investigate the time-varying multifractal characteristics and formation mechanism of EMR induced by underground coal mining. A series of uniaxial compression and multi-stage loading experiments with coal samples of different mechanical properties were carried out. The EMR signals during their damage evolution were monitored in real-time; the inherent law of EMR time series was analyzed by fractal theory. The results show that the time-varying multifractal characteristics of EMR are determined by damage evolutions process, the dissipated energy caused by damage evolutions such as crack propagation, fractal sliding and shearing can be regard as the fingerprint of various EMR micro-mechanics. Based on the Irreversible thermodynamics and damage mechanics, we introduced the damage internal variable, constructed the dissipative potential function and established the coupled model of the EMR and the dissipative energy, which revealed the nature of dynamic nonlinear characteristics of EMR. Waste iron tailings with cement-based inorganic binder is an economical and sustainable highway engineering base material, which is an effective way to reduce iron tailings inventory and affinity for engineering promotion. The flexural behavior considering the freeze-thaw action plays a crucial role for highway engineering base material. In this study, two types of fibers including polypropylene (PP) fiber and glass fiber were used to modify cement iron tailings powder (CITP), i.e., PPCITP or GCITP. Based on flexural tests, the influences of fiber length and freeze-thaw cycles on flexural behavior of modified CITPs were discussed. The results showed that the failure flexural strength of PPCITP reached the highest value at PP fiber length of 12 mm, while the flexural strength of GCITP presented a wavy downward trend with the increase of glass fiber length. The freeze-thaw cycle test results showed that the flexural strength of both PPCITP and GCITP decreased with the increase of freeze-thaw cycles, and the frost resistance of GCITP was better than that of PPCITP under the condition of the same volume of fibers. Then the single fiber pull-out test results implied that the interface action between glass fiber and CITP (G-CITP) was higher than that between PP fiber and CITP (PP-CITP) considering various curing ages and freeze-thaw cycles. Moreover, it is corroborated that PP fiber and glass fiber with length of 12 mm have the better reinforcement role in CITP specimens from the perspective of dissipative energy of fiber failure. Meanwhile, the dissipative energy results of both modified CITPs with fibers showed a downward trend with freeze-thaw cycles as a whole, and the dissipative energy of GCITP was higher than PPCITP at the specimen broken, which is consistent with the conclusion drawn in the single fiber pull-out test. The quantitative relationship models among dissipative energy, effective fiber length and freeze-thaw cycles of PPCITP and GCITP were further established, which could provide a reference for the large-scale production of waste iron tailings in highway engineering base materials. A Cu–24.0 at.% Al–2.2 at.% Ni–0.5 at.% B shape memory alloy was investigated experimentally under uniaxial tensile stress (σ) up to 10 MPa. Transformation temperatures and transformation strains as a function of σ were evaluated from the simultaneously measured temperature–elongation and temperature–resistance curves. Using appropriate analysis [Philos. Mag. B 82 (2002) 105; Scripta Mater. 43 (2000) 691; J. Phys. IV 11 (2001) Pr8], it is possible to determine the stress dependence of the volume derivatives of the elastic and dissipative free energies at the start and finish points of the forward and reverse transformations from the measured transformation temperatures and strains. From our experimental data, the above volume derivatives were calculated as a function of stress. The dissipative contributions both of the forward and reverse transformations increase with increasing stress. In case of elastic contributions, the difference between the forward and reverse transformation values as well as their decreasing tendency with increasing stress was clearly proved. The fatigue performance of the modified asphalt subjected to rolling thin film oven (RTFO) and pressurized aging vessel (PAV) was explored to determine and assess various fatigue life indices. The applicability of various fatigue life indexes (N f50 , N fm , N δ , N R , and N p20) which are determined according to five different fatigue failure criteria were evaluated through statistical analysis and geometric position method. The results indicated that the N f50 and N fm in the stress-controlled mode and the N f50 and N R in the strain-controlled mode of time sweep test exhibited comparable fatigue lives, respectively. The index N f50 was recommended to estimate the fatigue performance in both stress and strain-controlled modes of time sweep test. Further, it was found that the optimal dosage of rock asphalt (RA) and styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) was 5% and 2% respectively in the composite modified asphalt (RA/SBS) in stress-controlled mode, while the content of RA and crumb rubber (CR) in the composite modified asphalt (RA/CR) was 5% and 18% respectively in strain-controlled mode to achieve maximum fatigue lives. The reduction of RA content and the increment of CR content can significantly improve the fatigue resistance of the RA/CR and extend its fatigue life by >5 times. The effect of loading path, equivalent stress amplitude, equivalent mean stress and period on the multiaxial fatigue behaviors were discussed. The multiaxial fatigue damages of adhesively bonded joints were also analyzed from the evolution of ratchetting and dissipative energy behavior. The results showed that the loading paths had a great influence on dissipated energy and ratchetting strain, and the effects of non-proportional loading path on the ratchetting strain and dissipation energy were greater than that of the proportional loading path. Moreover, the equivalent stress amplitude, equivalent mean stress and period all had some influence on the dissipation energy and equivalent ratchetting strain. In addition, the dissipative energy and the ratchetting strain increased gradually with the number of cycle increase, which resulted in the fatigue life decreases with the increase of equivalent stress amplitude and mean stress, and the decreasing period. The effects of period on the multiaxial fatigue life under the elliptic loading path were insignificant for the adhesive bonding butt-joints. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
