Purpose: To assess the antioxidant and antineoplastic effects of Hibiscus sabdariffa Linn. on oral squamous cell carcinoma cells. Materials and Methods: Human squamous cell carcinoma HSCC cells were tested for cytotoxicity by a methanol extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa (MEHSP). After 24, 48, and 72 h, the MTT assay and Trypan blue exclusion test were used to determine cell survival and death. 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), DNA Protection Assay (DPA), and ferric reducing antioxidant power assay (FRAPA) measured the antioxidant activity of MEHSP. Results: The antioxidant activity (%) ranged from 47.92-82.24 in the DPPH test, 11.61-73.65 in the DPA, and 4.97-52.09 in the FRAPA. The HSCC in-vitro cytotoxicity assay showed dose- and time-dependent cell viability. MEHSP at 5 μg/ml inhibited viable cells, while increasing MEHSP doses decreased cell viability. The Trypan blue exclusion test showed that MEHSP significantly reduced cell viability at 24, 48, and 72 h. Conclusion:Hibiscus sabdariffa contains antioxidant and HSCC-cytotoxic properties. AbstractThe present study aimed to optimize the microwave-assisted extraction process for both the peel and pulp of Hylocereus undatus (white dragon fruit) cultivated in Tunisia, using response surface methodology. Total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power), and DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) antioxidant activities were optimized. A central composite design (CCD) was applied, considering three key variables: extraction time, extraction temperature, and liquid-to-solid ratio. The optimized extraction parameters for Hylocereus undatus peel and pulp were determined respectively (9.57 min, 42.20 °C and 27.79 mL/g) and (10.08 min, 40.84 °C and 31.52 mL/g). The main phenolic compounds identified in Hylocereus undatus peel and pulp extracts using HPLC-DAD were chlorogenic and caffeic acids and rutin, quercetin, luteolin-7-O-glucoside as flavonoids. Therefore, this research has revealed the potential of a sustainable and eco-friendly process hold promise a directional option and encouraging a circular economy approach for industrial production of antioxidant-rich Hylocereus undatus extracts. In the last years, the research on the sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua L.) has increasingly become the focus of oncology science. The bioactive ingredient of the plant is artemisinin, which has been proven to be effective in the treatment of malaria. At the same time, Hungarian and international research groups are also investigating the plant, with the research aimed at the treatment of malignant cancer. In Europe, the therapeutic use of medicinal plants against tumours is realized in relatively few countries, in contrast, phytotherapy research in Asia reports results with a significant therapeutic effect. The aim of our work was to investigate the antioxidant effect of Artemisia annua. The 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and Oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) laboratory assays proved that the parts of the herb show a significant antioxidant effect, while the seed and the extracted bioactive ingredient artemisinin have no antioxidant capacity at all. On the other hand, aqueous extracts made from leafy shoots showed promising antioxidant capacity values DPPH 10.48 ±0.46. Calabash (Crescentia cujete) is a plant that grows in tropical climates and is scattered and easily found in Indonesia. Calabash is also known to contain several secondary metabolite compounds that have the potential as an antioxidant. This research is purposed to identify phytochemical compounds in calabash fruit seed extract, identify compounds based on the result of LC-MS, and know the antioxidant activity of calabash fruit seeds. The samples were extracted using the maceration method, and then phytochemical screening, LC-MS tests, and antioxidant tests were continued using the DPPH method. This research showed that the ethanol extract of calabash seed positive contains saponin, flavonoids, and triterpenoid compounds. Ethyl acetate extract of calabash seed contains flavonoids, alkaloids, and triterpenoids. The n-hexane extracts positively contain tannins, alkaloids, and steroids. The values of antioxidant activity of ethanol, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane extracts were IC50 = 29.7883, 7.219, and 848.712 ppm (µg/ml), respectively. Ethyl acetate extract as the best antioxidant activity was then tested with LC-MS, and results obtained from 26 compounds with the composition of the largest % area is convolvidine (11.277%), coumaroylquinic acid (8.290%) and taxchinin G (8,233%). Luffa acutangula (Ridge gourd) possesses various valuable health effects due to the abundance of numerous bioactive compounds. The fruit from this crop is generally consumed worldwide after thermal processing, which may cause a difference in their bioactive constituents. The study investigates the impact of different cooking methods (microwaving, pressure cooking and frying) and various extraction solvents (ethanol, methanol and butanol) on the phytochemical content and antioxidant capacity of L. acutangula. Initial findings indicate that this fruit has significant antioxidant potential. Pressure-cooking and frying treatments were the best cooking methods for preserving the antioxidant capacity and bioactive compounds. Compared to the raw sample, the retention level of flavonoids after frying and pressure cooking was 45.0% and 10.5%, respectively, whereas 20.9% loss was observed in microwave cooking. Correspondingly, antioxidant capacity in terms of ferric reducing antioxidant power was measured to rise by 15.5% after pressure cooker cooking in respect to their raw sample. Interestingly, the development of new phenolic compounds such as vanillic acid, ellagic acid, rutein, catechin etc., after thermal treatments was observed in the cooked samples. Moreover, in the Pearson correlation study it was proved that the phenols and flavonoids are more accountable for antioxidant activity. Present data exhibit the availability of different bioactive compounds with their antioxidant potential and retention of these compounds after various thermal treatments. The results of present study provide important insights for refining type of cooking treatment to maintain and boost the antioxidant and nutritional properties of L. acutangula, thereby establishing it as a beneficial addition to a healthy diet. Bananas are one of the most extensively cultivated fruits globally, yielding substantial amounts of greenery, including their leaves. Banana leaves (BL) have notable protein content, bioactive compounds, and a significant fiber component. This study aimed to investigate the impact of incorporating dried and nutrient-determined BL along with a multienzyme complex into the diet of quails. The experiment lasted 35 days, a total of 280 one-day-old quail chicks (Coturnix coturnix japonica) were allocated into four groups with seven replicates. Experimental diets were formulated with the addition of dried BL at levels of 0% (C), 3% (BL3), 6% (BL6), and 9% (BL9), with the inclusion of 1,000 mg/kg multienzyme complex to the basal diet. The total fiber content of diets was determined at 2.77%, 4.28%, 5.77%, and 7.28%, respectively. The inclusion of BL in the diet did not significantly affect growth performance. However, the addition of 3% and 6% BL to the diet resulted in a significant reduction in meat oxidation. A 6% BL inclusion led to the lowest serum low-density lipoprotein and the highest high-density lipoprotein concentrations (p < 0.05). Meat yellowness (b*) increased with all three levels of BL in the diet compared to the basal diet (p < 0.05), while L* and a* values remained unaffected. Propolis, a natural resinous substance collected by bees, is known for its potent antioxidant properties. This study investigates the antioxidant activities and total phenolic contents of propolis samples from 16 provinces of Türkiye and their effects on the oxidative stability of sunflower oil. The 1,1‐diphenyl‐2‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) inhibition was in the range of 28.1%–92.5% in thirteen propolis samples, whereas this rate was 24.5% in butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). Although 2,2′‐azino‐bis(3‐ethylbenzotiazolin‐6‐sulfonic acid) (ABTS) value was 224 µmol trolox/g in BHT, this value was in the range of 262–1370 µmol trolox/g in propolis samples, except for one. Propolis methanol extracts 13 applied to sunflower oil at a concentration of 1000 ppm were more efficient than BHT added at 200 ppm for inhibiting the production of peroxide value (PV). Similarly, most propolis extracts (1000 ppm) demonstrated antioxidant activity against the production of p‐anisidine (p‐AV) in sunflower oil under accelerated oxidation conditions. It was determined that Turkish propolis had strong antioxidant properties and delayed oxidation and may be utilized commercially in the food sector to delay the oxidation of fats and oils. Due to inadequate treatment, diabetes mellitus, which is characterized by hyperglycemia, is a global health challenge that requires creative management techniques. This study explores the therapeutic potential of Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench fruit extracts in diabetes, offering an ample approach includes phytochemical analysis, qualitative and quantitative assessments, antidiabetic efficacy, antioxidant potential, and in vivo and in vitro investigations. Thin‐layer chromatography (TLC), high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) were utilized to disclose the phytochemical profile of the fruit extracts, which indicated a diverse range of bioactive compounds. Four polyphenolic compounds including chlorogenic acid, quercetin, rutin, and morin were confirmed by HPLC fingerprinting, with rutin being the most prevalent. Qualitative analysis reveals the presence of carbohydrates, emodin, terpenoids, lignin, glycosides, and anthraquinones, while indicating the absence of amino acids, anthocyanins, phlobatannins, lactones, and leucoanthocyanins. Quantitative analysis reveals total phenolic, tannin, and flavonoid. In vitro assessments demonstrate the ability of the extracts to inhibit alpha amylase. Radical scavenging activities were evaluated through DPPH assay, underscoring their antioxidant capacity with high effect in methanol extracts. Additionally, the methanol extract decreased the blood glucose level of Type 2 diabetic mice. Notably, test samples stabilized blood glucose levels, reversed deviations in blood profile parameters, blood biochemistry, and regulated organ weight. Based on its antioxidant and antidiabetic effects, as well as positive effects on the physiology of Type 2 diabetic mice, A. esculentus emerges as an important nutraceutical vegetable. As an important nutraceutical vegetable, it holds promise for diabetes management. A. esculentus can be incorporated into dietary interventions for individuals with diabetes, harnessing its natural antioxidant and antidiabetic properties. Our findings validate the traditional use of A. esculentus in green therapeutics. In conclusion, A. esculentus emerges as a valuable ally in the fight against diabetes, bridging the gap between ancient wisdom and modern science. This study explored the effect of geographical and floral origins on the antioxidant activities of Saudi honey samples related to their content of short peptides originated from honeybee proteins. The studied antioxidants were the total protein concentration, catalase activity, phenolic acids and flavonoids. The antioxidant activity assays included were the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay, the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay and Ascorbic acid Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity (AEAC). The studied honey samples were obtained from the southwestern region of Saudi Arabia, namely Asir (65) and Jazan (25). The floral origins of the honey samples were Acacia (51), Ziziphus (4) and polyfloral (35). The LC/MS technique was used to detect the short peptides and the mascot database was used to identify the short peptides, their precursor proteins and the protease enzymes that produce them. Jazan honey was characterized by high number of short peptides. The short peptides were originated from honeybee proteins by the action of proteases from the honeybees and bacteria. The antioxidant activity of the honey samples increase with the increase of their content of short peptides and proteins. The amino acids type and sequence of the short peptides qualify them to act as antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-diabetic, anti-hypertension, immunomodulatory and cholesterol lowering peptides. Since the beginning of humanity, people have used wild medicinal plants for the treatment of various diseases. Nowadays, researchers and scientists pay attention to exploring new tools to maximize the efficacy of natural products from natural resources, and among these tools formulation of nanoparticles is very promising. The green synthesis of metal/metal oxide nano-solutions using the Deverra tortuosa extract has still not been explored well. This study aims to prepare many metal/metal oxide nanoparticle solutions such as ZnO-NPs, SeO2-MNPs, and Ag-NPs via the methanol extract of D. tortuosa as safe, easy, green, and economic approach as well as characterize the chemical components of D. tortuosa plant by GC-MS spectroscopy analysis. The synthesized M-NPs solutions were characterized by UV–visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), zeta potential, Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and phytochemical analyses. The potential antioxidant capacity was estimated for the methanol extract of this plant along with the metal/metal oxide nanoparticles solutions by DPPH assay. In addition, the cytotoxic activity was in vitro assessed for the inspected samples against various tumor and normal cell lines applying MTT assay. The application of the D. tortuosa methanolic extract resulted in NPs with a range of 11.79–85.9 nm which was characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, TEM, zeta potential, and FT-IR spectroscopy that revealed various functional groups of the tested samples. The GC-MS analysis of the D. tortuosa methanolic extract showed the presence of 31 chemical compounds with 2-methyl-3-oxocyclopent-1-ene-1-carboxylic acid, methyl oleate, and 6-allyl-4,5-dimethoxybenzo[d][1,3]-dioxole as major constituents. The extract showed considerable antioxidant activity as well as antimicrobial activity that was assessed also against varied bacterial and fungal species. Remarkable potencies for the investigated metal/metal oxide nanoparticle solutions hinder the growth of the tumor cell lines, in addition to the growth of the microbial species. Based on the determined biological activities of the produced NPs, future study is recommended to characterize the pure authentic compounds that are identified within the D. tortuosa as major compounds as well as evaluate their modes of action. Chlorella species are fast-growing microalgae with significant industrial applications. The aim of the present study was to investigate the antitumor, antioxidant, and hemolytic activities of Chlorella sorokiniana UTEX 1230 crude methanol extracts and fractions. Ch. sorokiniana crude methanol extracts and collective fractions (CFs) were obtained from lyophilized biomass by maceration and column chromatography. Antitumor assays against murine lymphoma L5178Y-R and human breast cancer MCF-7 cells were performed by the colorimetric 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) reduction technique, using human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) as the control group. Antioxidant and hemolytic activities were evaluated using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging assay (DPPH) and erythrocyte hemolysis, respectively. We showed that crude methanol extracts (IC50) increased L5178Y-R and MCF-7 cell growth inhibition, without affecting PBMC. In addition, all evaluated CFs showed significantly higher antioxidant activity than the positive control (ascorbic acid). CF3 and CF4 showed the highest cytotoxicity against L5178Y-R, whereas CF3, CF4, and CF5 caused the highest antitumor activity against MCF-7 cells. CF3, CF4, and CF5 induced significantly higher hemolytic activity compared with all other fractions. CF characterization revealed loliolide, cinnamic acid, methyl dihydrojasmonate, salsalvamide A, 1-monolinolenin, cryptophycin 29, costunolide, riboflavin lumicrome, and germicidin B, which have been related to antitumor and antioxidant activities. Background: Berberine, a phytochemical, possesses remarkable potential for multitargeted drug therapy in microbial infections, wound healing and anti-inflammatory applications. However, its clinical utility in skin and other diseases is constrained due to its high aqueous solubility and inadequate dermal and intestinal absorption, resulting in low absolute bioavailability. Objectives: The current investigation endeavors to develop a microemulsion loaded with berberine to enhance its solubility and therapeutic effects specifically for skin diseases, while comparing its efficacy with a simple emulsion. Materials and Methods: In this study, an optimized oil-in- water (o/w) type of emulsion and microemulsion were formulated utilizing berberine isolated from Berberis aristata roots, along with soy lecithin, oleic acid, Tween 80, and ethanol. The microemulsion and emulsion were subjected to characterization employing parameters such as FTIR, particle size, zeta potential, transmittance, viscosity, and stability. The formulations were assessed for their therapeutic effects through in vitro antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti, microbial assays, encompassing six strains of micro, organisms comprising bacteria and fungi. Results: The investigation successfully generated a thermodynamically stable o/w type of microemulsion, which exhibited improved transparency and formed a clear solution. Characterization results, including particle size, zeta potential, viscosity, and conductivity measurements, fell within the acceptable range. The therapeutic evaluation demonstrated a substantial enhancement in the in vitro antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti, microbial activity of berberine microemulsion compared to the plain berberine solution. Conclusion: This study concludes that berberine can be effectively incorporated into a microemulsion system. Starting from the well known stable free radical DPPH (or its reduced counterpart, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazine) and several amino derivatives, novel zwitterionic compounds (diazenium betaines) were obtained and characterized by different means, like NMR, IR, MS, and UV–Vis. These betaines are highly intense blue-colored compounds that can be easily reduced by ascorbic acid (vitamin C) or sodium ascorbate to their corresponding para-phenyl substituted derivatives of DPPH, which have a yellow color. Most of such redox processes were found to be reversible. However, the oxidation of 2-p-aminophenyl-2-phenyl-1-picryl-hydrazine led to an azo-derivative of DPPH diradical, and its structure was unveiled by X-ray monocrystal diffraction. Objective: To screen the synthesized analogues for their in vitro DPPH free radical scavenging activity. Due to their high efficacy and inexpensiveness compared to natural antioxidants, synthetic antioxidants are frequently used. The current work is primarily concerned with investigating the free radical scavenging activity of derivatives of thiobarbituric acid, based on the findings of the literature review. Methods: A series of N,N-diethylthiobarbiturates (I–XVII) were synthesized, and screened for their DPPH radical scavenging activity. Results and discussion: Limited structure-activity relationship has been established on the basis of different substituents and their varying positions. These synthetic compounds showed varying degree of inhibition in the range of IC50 values 20.28 ± 0.15 to 286.19 ± 0.16 μM. Limited structure-activity relationship was revealed that hydroxyl containing compounds (V) (IC50 = 20.28 ± 0.15 μM), (IV) (IC50 = 22.89 ± 0.19 μM), and (I) (IC50 = 26.34 ± 0.03 μM) showed comparable free radical scavenging activities with standard quercetin (IC50 = 16.96 ± 0.14 μM). Conclusions: The study indicates that N,N-diethylthiobarbiturate derivatives have the potential to be synthetic antioxidants since they have strong DPPH radical scavenging action. In this study, the essential oil composition, antioxidant activities, phenolic and flavonoid contents, and of metanolic extract of Iranian and Afghanestanian populations of Ferula assa -foetida were evaluated. Essential oils were analyzed by using GC and GC/MS, The antioxidant activity were measured by 2, 2 -diphenyl - 1 -picrylhydrazyl and β - carotene/linoleic acid assay, also phenol and flavonoid content were measured by gallic acid and quercetin as standard compound. Result showed that propenyl sec butyl disulfide (42.72%), acetone, dimethyl mercaptole (14.84%) and gamma - eudesmol (8.6%) were the main compouned found in the Iranian population while; the Afghanestanian population were rich of propenyl sec butyl disulfide (39.61%), acetone, dimethyl mercaptole (18.25%) and 8 -ethyl -pentathiadecane (18.97%). In DPPH and β -carotene/linoleic acid tests, Iranian and Afghanestanian populations have stronger antioxidant activity respectively, also, the results demonstrated that the Afghanestanian population have more phenolic and flavonoid contents than the Iranian population. Overall, the results showed that the two populations investigated in this research have differences in terms of the type and percentage of essential oil compounds, antioxidant activity and phenol and flavonoid content. These differences are probably caused by differences in ecological factors such as the habitats of these populations and the influence of these factors on the studied parameters. A series of 16 (hetero)aryl compounds based on coumarin and equol has been efficiently synthesized by exploring the palladium-catalyzed Suzuki cross-coupling reactions. Polyphenol based on coumarin (4-methyl-7-hydroxy coumarin) was initially converted to corresponding coumarin imidazylate and then subjected to Suzuki coupling reaction with 4-methoxyphenylboronic acid to obtain the coupled product. This modified approach was later developed into a one-pot methodology by directly reacting the polyphenol with 1,1-sulfonyldiimidazole (SDI) and boronic acid in situ to obtain the Suzuki coupled product in one step. Moreover, an array of (poly)phenols based on coumarin and equol were later converted to diverse (hetero)aryl compounds by this optimized step-economic protocol. The synthesized compounds were then subjected to the screening of their potential antioxidant activities by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. In our investigation, the compounds 4ah, 4eh, 4gh and 4hh exhibited promising antioxidant potential when compared to the reference standard, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). Structure activity relationship (SAR) studies revealed the importance of the presence of electron-donating substituents in enhancing the antioxidant activity of the synthesized compounds. Silk fiber, often acclaimed as the pinnacle of textile materials, finds contemporary applications in the textile industry, health, and cosmetics. Gallic acid (GA) is a well‐established natural antioxidant. In the present study, a novel hybrid material SFd@GA was conceptualized and produced via surface grafting of GA onto degummed silk‐fibers (SFd). Successful covalent‐grafting of gallic acid onto the silk fabric surface was confirmed through Fourier‐transform infrared, Raman, thermogravimetric analysis (TG‐DTA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy demonstrates that gallic moieties grafted on SFd@GA retain their radical/redox activity. The antioxidant capacity of the hybrid material SFd@GA was validated by quantitative analysis of antioxidant hydrogen‐atom‐transfer (HAT) to DPPH radicals. Our data reveal a 550% increase in antioxidant‐HAT activity of SFd@GA versus natural intact silk fiber, and a 1400% increase in antioxidant‐HAT activity compared to the degummed silk fiber. The paramount discovery of the present work lies in the capacity for repeated utilization of the hybrid material SFd@GA, without any discernible compromise in its antioxidant‐HAT activity. Specifically, we show that SFd@GA can be employed for at least 15 consecutive cycles, retaining >98% of its HAT efficiency, for up to many days of storage under ambient conditions. The present study was aimed to synthesize the silver nanoparticles from Alangium salvifolium Wang. and evaluating its biomedical applications. The leaves of A. salvifolium collected and subjected for the standard procedure of Soxhlet extraction using distilled water as a solvent. With the help of an aqueous extract AgNPs were synthesized from silver nitrate using phyto-reduction method. Further, synthesized AgNPs were characterized using several analytical techniques such as UV, FTIR, SEM–EDX, XRD, particles size and zeta potential. Synthesized AgNPs were tested for antibacterial, antioxidant, anticancer for lung cancer cell line and flowcytometry-based pathway studies. The visual observation confirmed the formation of AgNPs from the aqueous extract by changing yellow to brown colour formation. Further, characterization techniques also confirmed the formation of AgNPs. Antibacterial activity results showed that the tested AgNPs were potent against bacterial pathogens with a higher zone of inhibition. Further, the antioxidant and anticancer activity of AgNPs revealed that the AgNPs have exhibited significant results with a good percentage of inhibition. Further, the flow cytometry studies confirmed that the AgNPs inducing apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in lung cancer. The phytochemicals of A. salvifolium plant have successfully synthesized AgNPs. In the case of performed biological activity, the synthesized silver nanoparticles exhibited potent activity. Traditional herbalists have been relied on for many years by Algerians to cure a wide range of diseases. Regardless of their nutritional values, mushrooms have chemical properties that make them attractive, beneficial, and more likely to be studied by researchers, according to ethnobotanical literature on traditional phytotherapy. Among all the edible mushrooms, tubers are a type of fungus that are traditionally used in fine dining and have garnered attention recently because of their many therapeutic applications. This research delves into a meticulous analysis of bioactive constituents in Bunium bulbocastanum tubers, sourced from Mostaganem and Relizane regions, with a keen focus on polyphenols, flavonoids, and condensed tannins. The quantification of total phenolic content was executed through the Folin-Ciocalteu assay, while flavonoids were assessed via the aluminum chloride colorimetric method. In addition, condensed tannins were evaluated in this study. Antioxidant capacities were scrutinized employing the 2,2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay. Microbial inhibition studies were conducted against five benchmark bacterial strains, utilizing the agar disc diffusion technique. Furthermore, a comprehensive liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS) analysis was performed to identify and quantify bioactive compounds. The findings underscore that the Mostaganem extracts were particularly rich in polyphenols (11.65 mg GAE/g of extract) and tannins (1.30 mg CE/g of extract), while the Relizane extracts boasted significant flavonoid concentrations (9.421 mg QE/g of extract). Notably, 4-methylguaiacol (82.04 mg/L), caffeic acid dimethyl ether (27.76 mg/L), syringic acid (20.48 mg/L), and naringenin (16.05 mg/L) emerged as the predominant volatile compounds. Compositional investigation of the extracts by LC–MS confirmed the presence of various compounds that were linked to the bioactivities exhibited by B. bulbocastanum tubers. These findings demonstrate the effective antibacterial and antioxidant properties of B. bulbocastanum tubers, indicating their potential use in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications. The flowers and stems of Rhubarb (Rheum ribes L.) are known to contain effective antioxidant compounds that have potential antidiarrheal properties in traditional medicine. This study was conducted to screen various genotypes of Rhubarb for their phytochemical and antioxidant activity and optimize the extraction parameters using the response surface methodology (RSM). The study found high diversity among the different genotypes (G1–G13) in terms of their flowers and stems. The total phenolic content (TPC) in the flowers of R. ribes varied significantly, showing values between 9.80 and 81.53 mg GAE g–1 DW. In the stems, TPC ranged from 2.87 to 16.33 mg GAE g−1 DW. Similarly, the total flavonoid content (TFC) in the flowers ranged from 0.33 to 1.32 mg Qu g−1 DW, while in the stems, it was between 0.05 and 0.38 mg Qu g−1 DW. The antioxidant activity, indicated as µmol Fe2+ g–1 DW, varied from 7.42 to 59.87 in the flowers and from 0.14 to 15.99 in the stems. Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) identified five distinct clusters among the collected genotypes. Subsequent analysis of variance and principal components analysis (PCA) revealed that the flowers of G8 (G8F) from Tehran to Lavasan exhibited the highest total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and antioxidant activity (FRAP). Given these findings, G8F was chosen for further optimization in the study. The RSM was designed based on a Box–Behnken design (BBD) to determine the optimal extraction conditions, including extraction temperature (30–80 °C), extraction time (5–15 min), and ethanol concentration (25–75%, ethanol to water, v/v). The responses measured were total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), total anthocyanin content (TAC), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging, and Ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. The optimal extraction conditions for all responses or desirability indices were X1: 80 °C, X2: 15 min, and X3: 53.14%, which resulted in TPC (99.32 mg GAE.g−1 DW), TFC (3.00 mg Qu.g−1 DW), TAC (1.12 mg cyanidin-3-glucoside (Cy-g) g−1 DW), FRAP (110.22 µmol Fe+2/g DW), and DPPHsc (88.20%). Antioxidants are molecules that work by warding off free radicals thereby reducing the damaging effects of free radicals. Coronary heart disease is a disease caused by free radicals. Kenikir leaves contain quite high flavonoid metabolite compounds, namely 12.197 mg QE/g. Flavonoids are among the largest natural phenolic compounds in plants that have bioactivity as medicines. The benefits of flavonoids are as anticancer, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant. The aim of this research was to determine the antioxidant activity of 50% and 70% ethanol extract of kenikir leaves (Cosmos caudatus Kunth.) using the DPPH method. This type of research is analytic cross sectional. The results of this study indicate that there is antioxidant activity of 50% and 70% ethanol extract of kenikir leaves (Cosmos caudatus Kunth.) using the DPPH method. The lowest IC50 value was 70% ethanol extract of kenikir leaves, namely 45.573 ± 0.241 ppm. The highest potential antioxidant activity is 70% ethanol extract of kenikir leaves with an IC50 value of 45.573 ± 0.241 ppm. The highest total flavonoid content was 70% ethanol extract of kenikir leaves, namely 17.209 ± 0.297%. The conclusion of this research is that 70% ethanol extract of kenikir leaves (Cosmos caudatus Kunth.) has the highest antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 45.573 ± 0.241 ppm. Background: Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) play a vital role in human physiological processes. However, at high concentrations, ROS can damage important macromolecules such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids, which can trigger various diseases. An imbalance between ROS and antioxidants in the body can cause oxidative stress. Purpose: This research aims to skill the antioxidants and secondary metabolites in telang flowers. Method: This experimental research utilized the juice of telang flowers that had dried and smoothed, then macerated using methanol solvent and evaporated until thickened. Phytochemical screening was conducted using Harborne's method, while the overall antioxidant level was tested using the DPPH (Blois) method. In addition, the overall phenolic level was tested following the procedures of Singelton and Rossi, while the alkaloid level was measured based on the method of Trivedi et al. Results: The use of phytochemical screening test, using the juice of telang flower identified flavonoids, glycosides, cardioglycosides, alkaloids, saponins, quinones, phenolics, coumarins, terpenoids, steroids, tannins, and anthocyanins. The total antioxidant capacity of telang flower juice showed an IC50 value of 471.42 µg/mL, which indicates that this extract has a weak antioxidant dose. Plant extracts of fifteen plants of ethnomedicinal use in Mexico were analyzed to provide scientific knowledge of their medicinal properties through the evaluation of different biological activities such as anti-hemolytic, antioxidant, and cytotoxic effects in normal cells. Therefore, methanolic extracts were obtained from each of the plants by the Soxhlet extraction. The hemolytic activity in human erythrocytes was evaluated, as was their potential to protect the erythrocyte membrane against the 2,2′-azobis (2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride (AAPH) and 1,1–diphenyl–2–picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radicals. Finally, the toxicity of the extracts in normal cell cultures of African green monkey kidney cells (Vero) and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) was determined by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) reduction method. Most of the extracts showed low hemolytic activity and high anti-hemolytic activity as well as high selectivity indices (SI) and antioxidant effects. Extracts of H. inuloides, J. dioica, and J. spicigera induced cell proliferation of the Vero cells. K. daigremontiana, A. adstringens, S. mexicanum, J. spicigera, L. tridentata, and M. tenuiflora extracts showed PBMC cell proliferation. In the present study, it was observed that the evaluated extracts did not present hemolytic activity, and some presented low toxicity when Vero and PBMC cell cultures were exposed. In conclusion, traditionally used plants possess beneficial health properties, and it is hoped that this study will serve as a basis for understanding the biological effects of traditionally used plants and may complement future studies. Bromination of the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical with bromine or N-bromo-succinimide (NBS) affords a complex mixture of bromo- and nitro-derivatives of the starting material. In this study, by chromatographic separation, most of the reaction products were isolated. This study was intended to determine the melissopalynological characteristics, LAB color, browning index, total phenolic content, antioxidant activity, phenolic profile, and their correlations within Iranian honeys. Ten honey samples were collected from beekeepers in various floristic regions of Iran, along with two commercial multi-floral samples. To determine the antioxidant activity, three methods of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, β-carotene bleaching, and Ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) were used. Phenolic compounds were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection (HPLC–DAD). Pollen analysis revealed that bees primarily fed on the Fabaceae and Asteraceae families in the Iranian flora. The local samples were taxonomically categorized as multi-floral honey. Besides, the commercial samples demonstrated the lowest levels of total phenolics and relatively poor antioxidant activity across all three methods. Syringic acid and luteolin were the predominant phenolic compounds in all samples. A strong correlation (p < 0.01) was found between color, melanoidin content and antioxidant activity, while no significant correlation existed between phenolic content and antioxidant activity. Overall, the results confirmed that examined multi-floral honeys exhibited inferior antioxidant activity compared to studies conducted in other regions worldwide, possibly due to sugar-fed bees, insufficient levels of potent phenolic constituents, and post-harvest thermal treatments. Knema elegans Warb. is an evergreen tree belonging to the Myristicaceae family, primarily native to Southeast Asia. This study examined the chemical composition and assessed the antioxidant and anti-acetylcholinesterase properties of the essential oil from the leaves of K. elegans in Vietnam. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis revealed the main compounds in the essential oil, including bicyclogermacrene (23.8%), germacrene D (17.1%), β-caryophyllene (15.4%), δ-cadinene (8.2%), and α-cadinol (7.9%). Antioxidant activity was assessed using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'- azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) methods, with halfmaximum inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of 93.11 ± 1.95 μg/mL and 114.95 ± 2.41 μg/mL, respectively, indicating moderate antioxidant potential. Additionally, the essential oil exhibited significant anti-acetylcholinesterase effects, with an IC50 value of 87.44 ± 2.52 μg/mL. These findings highlight the biological significance of K. elegans essential oil and suggest avenues for further investigation, particularly in elucidating its mechanisms of action in antioxidant and anti-acetylcholinesterase activities. Cancer has high prevalence rate and mortality with conventional chemotherapy and other management protocols being both expensive and inaccessible especially in low/medium income countries (LMIC). Sourcing alternative cheaper and easily accessible treatment from blends of antioxidants sources can reduce the burden of cancer on patients. This work therefore seeks to produce a blend from the protein hydrolysates of shrimp shell waste, germinated soybean and germinated pigeon pea which not only has high antioxidant activity but also can inhibit cervical cancer cell proliferation. In vitro antioxidant and cytotoxic activities of the mixtures of germinated pigeon pea, germinated soybean, and shrimp shell waste hydrolysates were evaluated using the mixture response surface methodology (MRSM). Fourteen blends were obtained using the simplex centroid design. Total phenolic content (TPC), 2, 2-Diphenyl-1-Picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and % cytotoxicity of the samples were analysed. Numerical optimization was conducted with the goal of simultaneously maximizing the DPPH scavenging activity and TPC while minimizing % cytotoxicity. The optimized blend consisted of 91.06 % pigeon pea, 8.94 % shrimp shell waste and 0 % soybean. The predicted responses obtained were 74.28 % DPPH scavenging activity, 39.6 GAE mg/dL TPC and 21 % cytotoxicity. The IC50 values for the optimized blend and a standard chemotherapeutic drug were 0.260 mmol/mL and 0.013 mmol / mL respectively. This in vitro study revealed that the pigeon pea - shrimp shell waste blend, as generated by MRSM, was comparable to a standard anticarcinogenic drug with respect to potency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current study's objective was to assess the antihyperlipidemic, in vitro antioxidant, and qualitative and quantitative phytochemical analysis of Nyctanthes arbor-tristis flowers hydroalcoholic extract at 200 and 400 mg/kg in rats that were made hyperlipidemic by a high-fat diet. The Folins Ciocalteau reagent and the aluminium chloride method were used for the quantitative measurement of flavonoids and phenolics, respectively. Through phytochemical investigation, alkaloids, carbohydrates, glycosides, tannins, phenolic compounds, triterpenoids, and steroids were found in the hydroalcoholic extracts of N. arbor-tristis flowers. The hydroalcoholic extract flowers had a total phenolic content of 126.000 mg/gm, which was followed by flavonoids at 103.104 mg/gm. Hydroalcoholic extracts of flowers showed concentration-dependent antioxidant activity in vitro against DPPH and superoxide radical scavenging test technique. The triton-induced study results indicate that animals treated with HANAT at dose levels of 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg had considerably lower blood lipid parameters (p<0.01) than the control group; however, the 400 mg/kg of HANAT group animals showed significantly higher serum lipid parameters (p<0.001) than the control group. Phenolic compounds are the predominant chemical constituents in the secondary metabolites of plants and are commonly found in pears. In this study, we focused on the analysis of the phenolic composition and antioxidant activity of leaves from five pear cultivars (Cuiguan, Chaohong, Kuerle, Nanguoli, and Yali) and tea leaves (Fudingdabai as the control) using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. The results indicated significant differences in the amount and composition of phenolic metabolites between tea and pear leaves, as well as among the five pear varieties. Only approximately one-third of the metabolites exhibited higher levels in pear leaves compared to that in tea leaves. The total phenol content in the Yali cultivar was higher than that in the other pear cultivars. Furthermore, specific phenolic metabolites with high expression were identified in the leaves of different groups. The levels of delphinidin 3-glucoside, aesculin, prunin, cosmosiin, quercetin 3-galactoside, isorhamnetin-3-O-glucoside, nicotiflorin, narcissin, chlorogenic acid, and cryptochlorogenic acid were relatively high among the five pear cultivars. (-)-Gallocatechin gallate, 6-methylcoumarin, aesculetin, hesperidin, kaempferol, and caftaric acid were identified as specific metabolic substances unique to each type of pear leaf. Most of the differential metabolites showed positive correlations and were primarily enriched in the flavonoid biosynthesis, flavone and flavonol biosynthesis, and phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathways. DPPH (1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical) analysis indicated that the Yali cultivar exhibited the highest antioxidant activity compared to other varieties. This study examined the production of kombucha beverages with several combination of black tea and Aloysia citrodora. For this purpose, five types of kombucha drinks were prepared using different ratios of pure black tea and pure A. citrodora (80:0, 50:30, 40:40, 30:50, and 0:80). Total phenolic and flavonoid content, radical-scavenging capacity based on DPPH, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) in the fermentation period (days 0, 5, 10, and 15), and cytotoxicity on the 15th day have been evaluated. The results showed that phenolic and flavonoid contents and antioxidant properties increased during fermentation (P < 0.01). Using A. citrodora as a substrate enhanced the phenolic and antioxidant properties. The maximum amounts of polyphenols and flavonoids were 240.24 mg GAE/mL and 49.65 μg QE/mL, respectively, and the DPPH value was 92.81% for the samples with an equal ratio of black tea and A. citrodora on the 15th day. In addition, this sample had the highest rate (66%) of destroying PC3 prostate cancer cells at a 600 μg dL−1 concentration. Using A. citrodora in kombucha drink not only improved the health indices but also caused better acceptance by the sensory evaluators compared to the sample of kombucha beverage produced with pure black tea. Ficus spp. are often used as food and in traditional medicine, and their biological activities as anti-inflammatory and diuretic, for wound healing, and as antimicrobial agents have been largely reviewed. The aim of this work was to investigate the polyphenol content and the antioxidant and anti-tyrosinase properties of the extracts from F. rubiginosa, a very poorly explored Ficus species. For this purpose, F. rubiginosa leaves were collected at three different maturity stages (H1, H2, and H3), and the environmentally sustainable methanolic extracts were evaluated for the total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and total catechins content (TCC). The polyphenolic profile was studied using HPLC-UV/DAD and UHPLC-MS, and the antioxidant activity was determined in vitro using DPPH, FRAP, and ABTS assays. The study showed that the H2 extract had higher TPC and TFC values (113.50 mg GA/g and 43.27 mg QE/g, respectively) and significant antioxidant activity. Therefore, the H2 extract was selected to study the anti-tyrosinase activity. The results also showed that H2 was able to bind and inhibit tyrosinase, with rutin being the compound responsible for the measured activity on the enzyme. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Oxidative stress or oxidative cell damage may lead to various systemic or chronic diseases including cancer. Therefore, there is a need to prevent the cells from oxidative stress resulting prevention of disease. As a consequence of this, our study investigated the anti-oxidant property of hydroethanolic Impatiens balsamina L. flower extracts using various antioxidant assays such as 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging assay, 2,2'-Azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) scavenging assay, catalase assay, hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, and nitric oxide scavenging activity. The results revealed the potent antioxidant activity through 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, 2,2'-Azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid), catalase, hydrogen peroxide, and nitric oxide scavenging activities. The extract showed efficient inhibitions at 100 µg/ml as 56%, 69%, 67%, 56%, and 59% for 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, 2,2'-Azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid), catalase, hydrogen peroxide, and nitric oxide, respectively. Abstract This study explored the effect of geographical and floral origins on the antioxidant activities of Saudi honey samples related to their content of short peptides originated from honeybee proteins. The studied antioxidants were the total protein concentration, catalase activity, phenolic acids and flavonoids. The antioxidant activity assays included were the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay, the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay and Ascorbic acid Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity (AEAC). The studied honey samples were obtained from the southwestern region of Saudi Arabia, namely Asir (65) and Jazan (25). The floral origins of the honey samples were Acacia (51), Ziziphus (4) and polyfloral (35). The LC/MS technique was used to detect the short peptides and the mascot database was used to identify the short peptides, their precursor proteins and the protease enzymes that produce them. Jazan honey was characterized by high number of short peptides. The short peptides were originated from honeybee proteins by the action of proteases from the honeybees and bacteria. The antioxidant activity of the honey samples increase with the increase of their content of short peptides and proteins. The amino acids type and sequence of the short peptides qualify them to act as antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-diabetic, anti-hypertension, immunomodulatory and cholesterol lowering peptides.

Abstract Since the beginning of humanity, people have used wild medicinal plants for the treatment of various diseases. Nowadays, researchers and scientists pay attention to exploring new tools to maximize the efficacy of natural products from natural resources, and among these tools formulation of nanoparticles is very promising. The green synthesis of metal/metal oxide nano-solutions using the Deverra tortuosa extract has still not been explored well. This study aims to prepare many metal/metal oxide nanoparticle solutions such as ZnO-NPs, SeO2-MNPs, and Ag-NPs via the methanol extract of D. tortuosa as safe, easy, green, and economic approach as well as characterize the chemical components of D. tortuosa plant by GC-MS spectroscopy analysis. The synthesized M-NPs solutions were characterized by UV–visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), zeta potential, Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and phytochemical analyses. The potential antioxidant capacity was estimated for the methanol extract of this plant along with the metal/metal oxide nanoparticles solutions by DPPH assay. In addition, the cytotoxic activity was in vitro assessed for the inspected samples against various tumor and normal cell lines applying MTT assay. The application of the D. tortuosa methanolic extract resulted in NPs with a range of 11.79–85.9 nm which was characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, TEM, zeta potential, and FT-IR spectroscopy that revealed various functional groups of the tested samples. The GC-MS analysis of the D. tortuosa methanolic extract showed the presence of 31 chemical compounds with 2-methyl-3-oxocyclopent-1-ene-1-carboxylic acid, methyl oleate, and 6-allyl-4,5-dimethoxybenzo[d][1,3]-dioxole as major constituents. The extract showed considerable antioxidant activity as well as antimicrobial activity that was assessed also against varied bacterial and fungal species. Remarkable potencies for the investigated metal/metal oxide nanoparticle solutions hinder the growth of the tumor cell lines, in addition to the growth of the microbial species. Based on the determined biological activities of the produced NPs, future study is recommended to characterize the pure authentic compounds that are identified within the D. tortuosa as major compounds as well as evaluate their modes of action.

Starting from the well known stable free radical DPPH (or its reduced counterpart, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazine) and several amino derivatives, novel zwitterionic compounds (diazenium betaines) were obtained and characterized by different means, like NMR, IR, MS, and UV–Vis. These betaines are highly intense blue-colored compounds that can be easily reduced by ascorbic acid (vitamin C) or sodium ascorbate to their corresponding para-phenyl substituted derivatives of DPPH, which have a yellow color. Most of such redox processes were found to be reversible. However, the oxidation of 2-p-aminophenyl-2-phenyl-1-picryl-hydrazine led to an azo-derivative of DPPH diradical, and its structure was unveiled by X-ray monocrystal diffraction. Possible diradicaloid behavior is also discussed.

Abstract The flowers and stems of Rhubarb (Rheum ribes L.) are known to contain effective antioxidant compounds that have potential antidiarrheal properties in traditional medicine. This study was conducted to screen various genotypes of Rhubarb for their phytochemical and antioxidant activity and optimize the extraction parameters using the response surface methodology (RSM). The study found high diversity among the different genotypes (G1–G13) in terms of their flowers and stems. The total phenolic content (TPC) in the flowers of R. ribes varied significantly, showing values between 9.80 and 81.53 mg GAE g–1 DW. In the stems, TPC ranged from 2.87 to 16.33 mg GAE g−1 DW. Similarly, the total flavonoid content (TFC) in the flowers ranged from 0.33 to 1.32 mg Qu g−1 DW, while in the stems, it was between 0.05 and 0.38 mg Qu g−1 DW. The antioxidant activity, indicated as µmol Fe2+ g–1 DW, varied from 7.42 to 59.87 in the flowers and from 0.14 to 15.99 in the stems. Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) identified five distinct clusters among the collected genotypes. Subsequent analysis of variance and principal components analysis (PCA) revealed that the flowers of G8 (G8F) from Tehran to Lavasan exhibited the highest total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and antioxidant activity (FRAP). Given these findings, G8F was chosen for further optimization in the study. The RSM was designed based on a Box–Behnken design (BBD) to determine the optimal extraction conditions, including extraction temperature (30–80 °C), extraction time (5–15 min), and ethanol concentration (25–75%, ethanol to water, v/v). The responses measured were total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), total anthocyanin content (TAC), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging, and Ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. The optimal extraction conditions for all responses or desirability indices were X1: 80 °C, X2: 15 min, and X3: 53.14%, which resulted in TPC (99.32 mg GAE.g−1 DW), TFC (3.00 mg Qu.g−1 DW), TAC (1.12 mg cyanidin-3-glucoside (Cy-g) g−1 DW), FRAP (110.22 µmol Fe+2/g DW), and DPPHsc (88.20%). The R 2 values (0.91–0.99) indicated that the RSM models were acceptable.

Abstract Traditional herbalists have been relied on for many years by Algerians to cure a wide range of diseases. Regardless of their nutritional values, mushrooms have chemical properties that make them attractive, beneficial, and more likely to be studied by researchers, according to ethnobotanical literature on traditional phytotherapy. Among all the edible mushrooms, tubers are a type of fungus that are traditionally used in fine dining and have garnered attention recently because of their many therapeutic applications. This research delves into a meticulous analysis of bioactive constituents in Bunium bulbocastanum tubers, sourced from Mostaganem and Relizane regions, with a keen focus on polyphenols, flavonoids, and condensed tannins. The quantification of total phenolic content was executed through the Folin-Ciocalteu assay, while flavonoids were assessed via the aluminum chloride colorimetric method. In addition, condensed tannins were evaluated in this study. Antioxidant capacities were scrutinized employing the 2,2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay. Microbial inhibition studies were conducted against five benchmark bacterial strains, utilizing the agar disc diffusion technique. Furthermore, a comprehensive liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS) analysis was performed to identify and quantify bioactive compounds. The findings underscore that the Mostaganem extracts were particularly rich in polyphenols (11.65 mg GAE/g of extract) and tannins (1.30 mg CE/g of extract), while the Relizane extracts boasted significant flavonoid concentrations (9.421 mg QE/g of extract). Notably, 4-methylguaiacol (82.04 mg/L), caffeic acid dimethyl ether (27.76 mg/L), syringic acid (20.48 mg/L), and naringenin (16.05 mg/L) emerged as the predominant volatile compounds. Compositional investigation of the extracts by LC–MS confirmed the presence of various compounds that were linked to the bioactivities exhibited by B. bulbocastanum tubers. These findings demonstrate the effective antibacterial and antioxidant properties of B. bulbocastanum tubers, indicating their potential use in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications.

Bovine colostrum is the initial milk produced after birth that contains high levels of immunoglobulins and antimicrobial peptides. This study examined the production of bovine colostrum powder using two methods including spray- and freeze-drying. Spray-drying involves quickly drying a liquid or slurry with hot gas, while freeze-drying is a low-temperature dehydration process that preserves the product by freezing it and at reduced pressure. The aim was to compare the effectiveness of spray-drying versus freeze-drying in producing colostrum powder, focusing on protein and defensive protein content. The freeze-drying sample contained higher levels of protein and defensive proteins (IgG and IgA) compared to spray-drying. The DPPH value was high in freeze-dried samples, while higher values of FRAP, TPC, and ABTS were found in spray-dried samples. Microbiological analysis indicated freeze drying generally yielding lower counts. Sensory evaluation suggested that spray-dried colostrum scored higher for flavor and aroma, while freeze-dried samples were preferred in appearance. Overall, the study underscored the distinction between spray=drying and freeze-drying in producing bovine colostrum powder, with implications for nutritional content and sensory attributes.

ABSTRACTThe citrus processing industry generates around 50% fruit waste, encompassing peels, pulp, seeds, and other residues. Citrus peel, among these by-products, contains significant amounts of bioactive compounds, representing a sustainable and renewable source of phenolics. In this context, the present study was conducted to probe phytochemical profile and antioxidant potency of orange peel extracts. Moreover, the quantification of hesperidin and nobiletin was carried out using HPLC. The extracts were obtained using water and 50% aqueous-methanol and aqueous-ethanol, separately alongside varying time intervals, i.e. 30, 45 and 60 min. The obtained extracts were then investigated for their phytochemical and antioxidant profile. Afterwards, three best treatments, one from each extracts (aqueous-ethanol, methanol, and water), were chosen based on their phytochemical profiling. The phytochemical analyses and in vitro antioxidant assays showed the highest total phenolics (2010 mg GAE/100 g), flavonoids (90 mg/100 g), and flavonols (2.2 mg/100 g) in methanolic extracts obtained at 60 min. Likewise, the highest DPPH (60.55%), antioxidant activity (51.7 %), FRAP (13.6 mg TE/g), and ABTS (7.4 µmol TE/g) were also attributed to methanolic extract of orange peel obtained at 60 min except for antioxidant activity which was obtained at 30 min. Likewise, HPLC analysis depicted maximum content of hesperidin and nobiletin (133.70 and 8.50 mg/g) in methanol extract as compared to ethanol (98.80 and 5.50 mg/g) and water (61.90 and 1.25 mg/g), correspondingly. It was concluded that aqueous-methanol could be used as solvent of choice for isolation of orange peel flavonoids with extraction duration of 60 min. Flavonoid and antioxidant levels in orange peel extracts are significantly influenced by extraction time and solvent type.

Abstract Free radical is a marker in various inflammatory diseases. The antioxidant effect protects us from this damage, which also plays an essential role in preventing inflammation. Inflammation protects the body from biological stimuli, and pro-inflammatory mediators are negatively affected in the immune system. Inflammation caused by LPS is an endotoxin found in the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, which induces immune cells to produce inflammatory cytokines such as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase. Based on this, the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of plant extracts were investigated. First, the main phenolic compounds for the five peaks obtained from Stachys affinis extract (SAE) were identified. The antioxidant effect of each phenolic compound was confirmed through HPLC analysis before and after the competitive binding reaction between DPPH and the extract. Afterward, the anti-inflammatory effect of each phenolic compound was confirmed through competitive binding between COX2 and the extract in HPLC analysis. Lastly, the anti-inflammatory effect of SAE was confirmed through in vitro experiments and also confirmed in terms of structural binding through molecular docking. This study confirmed that phenolic compounds in SAE extract have potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, and may provide information for primary screening of medicinal plants.

Water deficit stress is one major environmental constraint having a devastating impact on crop productivity. Improving plant tolerance to drought is imperative to ensure food security. Drought stress during maize seedling establishment stage lowers the seedling survival rate and increases post pollination embryo abortion rate. Thus, an experiment was carried out as factorial in randomized complete design with three replicates to evaluate the tolerance mechanism of five local maize cultivars at Department of Life Sciences (Botany), Manipur University, Manipur during February to April, 2022. The maize seeds were allowed to germinate under control environment conditions: 14h light/10h dark, 25±2oC temperature and 60% relative humidity using a growth chamber (Tanco PLT-149 Plant Growth Chamber). At seven days after emergence, different concentrations of PEG-6000 were used to impose water deficit stress to maize seedlings. It was observed that drought stress substantially inhibited growth and development across all cultivars. Relative water content (RWC) as well as chlorophyll pigment concentration showed gradual decline under different drought stress levels with cultivar M002 being the least affected. Drought stress also triggered significant augmentation of osmolytes and antioxidant activity with maximum accumulation in cultivar M002. Overall findings from this study indicate that cultivar M002 possess promising drought tolerance characteristics and can perform successfully in water scarce regions.

The study investigates the antioxidant activity and total flavonoid compounds in leaves crystal guava, a plant rich in vitamin C and high in antioxidant activity. The research involved maceration extraction of leaves cystal guava using methanol solvent, then fractionation with ethyl acetate and n-hexane solvents in stages to obtain extracts methanol, ethyl acetat and n-hexane; thereafter extracts were subjected to phytochemical screening, total flavonoid content determination, and antioxidant activity using the DPPH method. The study found secondary metabolite compounds which is found in leaves crystal guava such as flavonoids, alkaloids, steroids, terpenoids, saponins and tannins; that ethyl acetate extract had the highest flavonoid content of 171.91 mg/L and highest antioxidant activity with IC50 value of 9.59 ppm, followed by n-hexane and methanol extracts.

Manuka honey (MH) is considered a superfood mainly because of its various health-promoting properties, including its anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and clinically proven antibacterial properties. A unique feature of Manuka honey is the high content of methylglyoxal, which has antibacterial potential. Additionally, it contains bioactive and antioxidant substances such as polyphenols that contribute to its protective effects against oxidative stress. In this study, commercially available Manuka honey was tested for its total polyphenol content and DPPH radical scavenging ability. It was then tested in vitro on human fibroblast cells exposed to UV radiation to assess its potential to protect cells against oxidative stress. The results showed that the honey itself significantly interfered with cell metabolism, and its presence only slightly alleviated the effects of UV exposure. This study also suggested that the MGO content has a minor impact on reducing oxidative stress in UV-irradiated cells and efficiency in scavenging the DPPH radical.

Currently, agroindustrial waste can be used to obtain bioactive compounds. The solid-state fermentation is an alternative for the valorization of these waste and to be able to release bioactive compounds that may be of interest to different industrial sectors. The aim of this study was to evaluate solid-state fermentation conditions using pineapple peel waste as the substrate with Aspergillus niger spp., to release bioactive compounds using a Plackett–Burman exploratory design. Temperature, humidity, inoculum, NaNO3, MgSO4, KCl, and KH2PO4 conditions in the fermentation process were evaluated. The antioxidant capacity was determined, and the main compounds of the fermentation extracts were identified. The results revealed that the Aspergillus niger HT3 strain reached a hydrolyzable tannin release of 10.00 mg/g, While Aspergillus niger Aa20 reached a condensed tannin release of 82.59 mg/g. The KH2PO4 affects the release of condensed tannins with A. niger Aa20, and MgSO4 affects the release of hydrolyzable tannins with A. niger HT3. In addition, a positive antioxidant activity was demonstrated for the DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP technique. The main compounds in the fermented pineapple peel were 3-feruloylquinic acid, caffeic acid, lariciresinol, and 3-hydroxyphloretin 2′-O-xylosyl-glucoside, among others. The solid-state fermentation process is a biotechnological alternative for the release of bioactive compounds.
