Veterinary medications used for disease treatment and prevention may remain in animal‐origin foods, such as milk, eggs, honey and meat, which could pose a risk to the public's health. These drugs come from different groups of drugs, mostly with antibiotic, anti‐parasitic or anti‐inflammatory actions, in a range of food matrices including milk, meat or egg. This review is intended to provide the reader with a general insight about the current status of veterinary drug residues in food products of animal origin, detection methods and their public health consequences. The discovery of antimicrobials has led to the development of antibiotics for treating and preventing cattle illnesses and encouraging growth. However, the rise of drug resistance has led to increased antibiotic consumption and resistance among microbes in the animal habitat. This resistance can be passed to humans directly or indirectly through food consumption and direct or indirect interaction. Improper and illegal use, inadequate withdrawal periods and environmental contamination from veterinary drugs are reported to be the major causes for the formation of residue in food products of animal origin. The use of veterinary products above or below the advised level may also result in short‐ or long‐term public health issues, such as the creation of resistant strains of micro‐organisms, toxicity, allergy, mutagenesis, teratogenicity and carcinogenetic effects. An enhanced quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) purification method utilizing multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) has been developed and coupled with liquid chromatography‐tandem mass spectrometry for the determination of eight quinolone drug residues in quail eggs. The sample was extracted using ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid‐McIlvaine buffer (pH = 4.0) and 2% formic acid in acetonitrile, followed by salting out with MgSO4, and purification with primary secondary amine (PSA), MWCNT, and Octadecylsilane (C18). The method demonstrated linear relationships for the target compounds within the range of 2–100 µg/L with correlation coefficients (r) exceeding 0.99. The limits of detection and quantification were determined to be 0.4 and 0.8 µg/kg, respectively. Validation through a three‐level spiking test (low, medium, and high) in quail eggs resulted in an average recovery rate ranging from 86.8% to 113.7%, with relative standard deviations between 2.6% and 10.2% (n = 6). This method offers rapid operation, excellent purification efficiency, and high sensitivity, making it suitable for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of quinolone drug residues in eggs. Application of this method to a batch of 20 quail eggs revealed the presence of enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin, suggesting a potential risk of non‐compliant quinolones use in quail egg production. Pesticide residues were extracted using the QuEChERS method, followed by detection by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). The non-carcinogenic health risk in adult and child consumers was calculated by target hazard quotient (THQ) and total target hazard quotient (TTHQ) in the Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) method. The rank order of pesticides detected by UHPLC-MS/MS based on median concentration in onion was tebuconazole (0.004551 mg/kg) > imidacloprid (0.00233 mg/kg) > boscalid (0.00211 mg/kg) > diazinon (0.00079 mg/kg) > thiabendazole (0.00075 mg/kg) > acetamiprid (0.00052 mg/kg) > thiophanate-methyl (0.00052 mg/kg) > dichlorvos (0.000349 mg/kg) > fenitrothion (0.000132 mg/kg) > penconazole (0.00005 mg/kg). The median of TTHQ in adults and children's consumers were 4.00E–3 and 2.00E–2, respectively. TTHQ in adults and children's consumers was lower than 1 value. Hence, consumers were in the acceptable range (TTHQ <1). Consequently, onion consumption cannot endanger consumers' health status due to the pesticide residues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Parasitic infections in dairy cattle reduce herd immunity, milk production, and conception rates. This leads to higher production costs, compromised animal welfare, and increased interest in extralabel drug use. The extralabel use of anthelmintics poses food safety risks for consumers since appropriate withdrawal intervals in milk have yet to be established. Although topical eprinomectin has no milk withdrawal time, more research is needed to determine the residues present in milk after subcutaneous administration. This study aimed to characterize the pharmacokinetics of injectable eprinomectin in dry dairy cows. We hypothesized that, when given at the labeled dose, eprinomectin residues in dry dairy cattle would be below the FDA milk tolerance at the onset of lactation. Plasma was collected daily from 13 mature dairy cattle for 7 days postadministration, followed by periodic samples for 90 days. After calving, milk was collected daily until 90 days. Eprinomectin concentrations were measured using HPLC‐fluorescence detection. The maximum eprinomectin concentration in plasma and milk was approximately 36 ng/mL 43 h after administration and 3 ng/mL at the onset of lactation, respectively. The low eprinomectin levels in milk collected from these lactating dairy cattle suggest that administering eprinomectin at dry‐off is unlikely to result in violative residues. However, subcutaneous eprinomectin in lactating dairy cattle would be hard to justify unless there is evidence that the approved topical formulation is clinically ineffective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Physiologically Based Pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models can provide forecasts of the drug residues within the organism. Ractopamine (RAC) is a typical β-agonist. In this study, we developed a PBPK model for RAC in goats. The goal was to predict the distribution of the drug after multiple oral administrations. The preliminary PBPK model for RAC in goats performed well in predicting the drug's distribution in most tissues. In our sensitivity analysis, we found that the parameter of Qclu (Blood Flow Volume through Lungs) had the greatest impact on the RAC concentrations in plasma, liver, and kidney and was the most sensitive parameter. Furthermore, our study aimed to assess the withdrawal time (WT) of RAC in different tissues after RAC long-term exposure in goats. We found that the WT of RAC in the kidney was the longest, lasting for 13 days. Overall, the insights gained from this study have important implications for optimizing drug administration in goats and ensuring appropriate withdrawal times to prevent any potential risks. AbstractResidues of harmful substances in food can severely damage human health. The content of these substances in food is generally low, making detection difficult. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), based on noble metal nanomaterials, mainly gold (Au) and silver (Ag), has exhibited excellent capabilities for trace detection of various substances. Noble metal nanoassemblies, in particular, have extraordinary flexibility and tunable optical properties, which cannot be offered by single nanoparticles (NPs). These nanoassemblies, with their various morphologies synthesized using NPs through artificially induced self-assembly or template-driven preparation, can significantly enhance the local electric field and create “hot spots” due to the gaps between adjacent NPs. Consequently, the SERS properties of NPs become more prominent, leading to improved performance in the trace detection of various substances and detection limits that are considerably lower than the current relevant standards. Noble metal nanoassemblies show promising potential in ensuring food safety. This review discusses the synthesis methods and SERS properties of noble metal nanoassemblies and then concentrates on their application in detecting biotoxins, drug residues, illegal additives, and heavy metals. Rifaximin and rifampicin are good broad-spectrum antimicrobials. The irrational use of antimicrobial drugs in veterinary clinics could threaten public health and food safety. It is necessary to develop a reliable detection method of the residue for enhancing the rational supervision of the use of such drugs, reducing and slowing down the generation of bacterial resistance, and promoting animal food safety and human health. So, this study developed an LC-MS/MS method for the detection of rifaximin and rifampicin residues in animal-origin foods. The residual rifaximin and rifampicin of homogenized test materials were extracted with acetonitrile-dichloromethane solution or acetonitrile in the presence of anhydrous sodium sulfate and vitamin C, purified by dispersible solid phase extraction, determined by LC-MS/MS, and quantified by the internal standard method. The specificity, sensitivity, matrix effect, accuracy, and precision of the method were investigated in the edible tissues of cattle, swine, or chicken. In addition, the stability of the standard stock solution and the standard working solution was also investigated. The method was suitable for the muscle, liver, kidney, fat, milk, and eggs of cattle, swine, or chicken, as well as fish and shrimp. The specificity of the method was good, and the detection of the analytes was not affected by different matrices. Both the LOD and LOQ of the two analytes were 5 μg/kg and 10 μg/kg, respectively. The results of matrix effects in each tissue were in the range of 80–120%; there were no significant matrix effects. The average accuracy of rifaximin and rifampicin in different foodstuffs of animal origin was between 80% and 120%, and the method precision was below 20% (RSD). The proposed method showed good performance for determination, which could be employed for the extraction, purification, and detection of residual rifaximin and rifampicin in edible animal tissues. The pretreatment procedure of tissue samples was simple and feasible. The method was highly specific, stable, reliable, and with high sensitivity, accuracy, and precision, which met the requirements of quantitative detection of veterinary drug residues. It is imperative to eliminate heavy metals and pharmaceutical residual pollutants from wastewater to reduce their detrimental effects on the environment. In this work, natural zeolite and a 2-amino terephthalic acid-based multi-metallic organic framework were used to create a new composite that can be utilized as an adsorbent for cadmium and safinamide. The adsorption study was examined in a variety of settings (pH, adsorbent dosage, pollutant concentration, and time). Moreover, Zeta potential, BET, SEM, FTIR, XRD, and SEM measurements were used to characterize the adsorbents. The adsorption process was confirmed using FTIR, XRD, and SEM analysis. Various nonlinear adsorption isotherm models were applied to adsorption results. The results showed a significantly better adsorption ability for safinamide and cadmium using zeolite/MOF compared to zeolite. Adsorption kinetics were represented by five models: pseudo first-order, pseudo second-order, intraparticle diffusion, mixed first- and second-order, and the Avrami model. Regarding both adsorbent substances, safinamide adsorption was best represented by the intraparticle diffusion model. In contrast, the pseudo second-order and intraparticle diffusion models for zeolite and zeolite/MOF, respectively, better fit the experimental results in the case of cadmium adsorption. The thermodynamic parameters ΔH°, ΔS°, and ΔG° were investigated through temperature tests carried out at 25, 35, 45, and 55 °C. Exothermic and spontaneous adsorption processes were demonstrated by the computed values. The study of adsorbent regeneration involved the use of several chemical solvents. The DMSO solvent was shown to have the highest adsorbent regeneration method efficiency at 63%. Safinamide elimination was lessened by organic interfering species like cefixime and humic acid compared to inorganic species like chloride, sulphate, and nitrate, most likely as a result of intense competition for the few available active sites. Using zeolite/MOF nanocomposite, the percentage of safinamide removed from spiked real water samples (tap water, Nile River water, and groundwater samples) was 48.80%, 64.30%, and 44.44%, respectively. Based on cytotoxicity results, the highest percentages of cell viability for zeolite and zeolite/MOF at 24 h were 83% and 81%, respectively, in comparison to untreated controls. Wastewater‐based epidemiology (WBE) is a reliable means to estimate drug consumption in a specific population. By measuring the concentration of drug residues or metabolites in wastewater, the consumption behavior pattern of a specific population can be deduced. Using the WBE method, the present study, for the first time, continuously monitored the differences in the consumption of morphine (MOR), codeine (CODE), and methamphetamine (METH) in three wastewater‐treatment plants in a city and two surrounding villages in Xinjiang, China during International Workers' Day and the following week. The wastewater samples were pretreated by solid‐phase extraction and then analyzed by high‐performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. Methamphetamine was not detected in rural areas and was detected only on International Workers' Day in urban areas. According to the estimation of per capita consumption, the per capita consumption of MOR, CODE, and METH in urban inhabitants was 12.04 to 23.39, 10.44 to 16.39, and 1.31 mg/day/1000 inhabitants. The per capita consumption of MOR and CODE in rural areas was 5.19 to 8.35 and 2.56 to 3.52 mg/day/1000 inhabitants. The consumption of MOR in urban and rural areas was significantly higher than that of CODE and METH. During International Workers' Day, workdays, and weekends, the consumption of MOR and CODE in urban areas is significantly higher than that in rural areas. Compared with those on weekends, the consumption of urban MOR and CODE increased more during International Workers' Day. The consumption of MOR in urban areas showed a weekend effect. [Objectives] The purpose of this paper was to develop a method for the high-throughput determination of 8 sulfonamides, 3 tetracyclines, 2 quinolones and trimethoprim drug residues in pork and chicken tissues by colloidal gold immunochromatographic assay(GICA). [Methods] Sulfonamides, tetracyclines, quinolones and trimethoprim in animal muscle tissues were extracted by phosphate buffer and diluted by phosphate buffer with Tween 20, binding to colloidal gold-labeled monoclonal antibodies and inhibiting the binding of the antibodies to the antigen on the nitrocellulose membrane test line(T-line), which resulted in a change of the color of the T-line. The qualitative determination of poly-veterinary drug residues in the samples was made by comparing the color shades of the T-line and control line(C-line). [Results] This test optimized the key factors such as pH value, antibody addition, antigen encapsulation, Tween 20 addition and type of lyophilized protectant. The limit of detection for sulfonamides, tetracyclines, quinolones and trimethoprim was 50, 100, 50 and 35 μg·kg-1, respectively, and the sensitivity ≥97%, the false positive rate ≤2%, the false negative rate ≤3%, and the method was consistent with the results detected by the existing standard method. [Conclusions] The method was simple with high sensitivity, high precision, short detection time and good stability. The common use of antimicrobials in food-animal production can lead to drug residues in edible tissues for consumers. However, immunomodulators enhance immune responses and vaccine effectiveness. A new perspective explores bacterial extracellular bioactive molecules (EBMs) in food-animal production to modulate host immune responses, potentially transforming pathogen management and antimicrobial use. This study investigates the immunogenic potential of Aeromonas hydrophila-derived EBMs (Antigens) to enhance the immune system. Four Antigens were administered intraperitoneally to Oreochromis niloticus (Nile Tilapia). Antigens 2 and Antigens 3 boosted fish immune competence within 21 days. Remarkably, Antigens 3 induced robust immunity against A. hydrophila with a single dose, notably enhancing antibody-based immune responses. The increased antibody activity suggests Antigens 3 could be a vaccine candidate, promising further research and potential application in food-animal production to improve disease control. This study highlights immunomodulators' potential in reshaping disease management in the food-animal industry, emphasizing the benefits of focusing on bacterial EBMs to reduce reliance on antimicrobials and achieve sustainable disease prevention. A multi‐template molecularly imprinted photocatalyst based on Black TiO2 was used for selective and simultaneous adsorption and degradation of Non‐steroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) under LED irradiation from aqueous solutions. diclofenac (DCF) and ibuprofen (IBP) were chosen as the target chemicals and the performance of the Black TiO2‐MIP nanocomposite in removing these pollutants was investigated. The imprinting procedure was confirmed by characterization tests of the nanocomposite. The synthesized mesoporous nanocomposite exhibited excellent fit with the pseudo‐second‐order kinetic model (R2 ≥ 0.99). Moreover the experimental data demonstrated a good fit with the Langmuir isotherm model (R2 = 0.99). The findings imply that the binding sites are homogeneous and indicate monolayer chemical adsorption on the adsorbent. Toxicity assessment of targeted chemicals and their by‐products, worked out using the Ecological Structure–Activity Relationships (ECOSAR) program, revealed a significant decrease in the toxicity of the target compounds during photocatalytic degradation. In addition, the use of Black TiO2‐MIP nanocomposite in the cartridge structure led to notable removal efficiencies, 98.7% and 97.6% for DCF and IBP, respectively. The findings also provided evidence that the use of Black TiO2‐MIP in the cartridge structure not only facilitated the removal of target pollutants but also addressed challenges related to the collection and separation of the nanocomposite from the aqueous solution. The results implied that the integration of molecular imprinting and photocatalysis processes exhibits high effectiveness in the simultaneous and selective removal of contaminants. Drug residues that contaminate food and water represent a serious concern for human health. The major concerns regard the possible irrational use of these contaminants, since this might increase the amplitude of exposure. Multiple sources contribute to the overall exposure to contaminants, including agriculture, domestic use, personal, public and veterinary healthcare, increasing the possible origin of contamination. In this review, we focus on crop pesticides and veterinary drug residues because of their extensive use in modern agriculture and farming, which ensures food production and security for the ever-growing population around the world. We discuss crop pesticides and veterinary drug residues with respect to their worldwide distribution and impacts, with special attention on their harmful effects on human reproduction and embryo development, as well as their link to epigenetic alterations, leading to intergenerational and transgenerational diseases. Among the contaminants, the most commonly implicated in causing such disorders are organophosphates, glyphosate and antibiotics, with tetracyclines being the most frequently reported. This review highlights the importance of finding new management strategies for pesticides and veterinary drugs. Moreover, due to the still limited knowledge on inter- and transgenerational effects of these contaminants, we underlie the need to strengthen research in this field, so as to better clarify the specific effects of each contaminant and their long-term impact. The monitoring and precise determination of pesticides and pharmaceutical drugs and their residues have become increasingly important in the field of food safety and water contamination issues. Herein, a fluorescent aluminium MOF‐based sensor (1) was developed for the selective recognition of neonicotinoid insecticide dinotefuran and anti‐Parkinson's drug entacapone. Guest‐free MOF 1′ exhibited ultra‐fast response (<5 s) and ultra‐low detection limits of 2.3 and 7.6 nM for dinotefuran and entacapone, which are lower than the previously reported MOF‐based sensors. In the presence of other competitive analytes, great selectivity was achieved towards both analytes. The probe was recyclable up to five cycles. The sensing ability was explored towards entacapone in human serum, urine and dinotefuran in real soil, rice, honey samples, different fruits, vegetables, real water specimens and a wide range of pH media. A low‐cost, handy MOF‐based polymer thin‐film composite (1′@PVDF‐PVP) was developed for the on‐site detection of dinotefuran and entacapone. Mechanistic studies involving analytical techniques and theoretical calculations suggested that FRET and PET are the probable reasons for entacapone sensing whereas IFE is responsible for dinotefuran detection. This study aimed to present a sensitive, accurate, and precise analytical method for the determination of 32 antibiotics from 5 groups (sulfonamides, macrolides, aminoglycosides, tetracyclines, and quinolones) and some individual antibiotics (lincomycin, griseofulvin, and 5-hydroxy-flunixin) in 63 honey samples collected from Tehran market. In the presented method, the samples were hydrolyzed by 1% HFBA (hepta fluoro butyric acid) in water, purified on Strata XL polymeric reversed-phase cartridges, and finally analyzed by reversed-phase ion-pair liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (RP-IP-LC-ESI-MS/MS). Good performance characteristics were gained for recovery, precision, range, and linearity, the limit of detections (LODs), and the limit of quantifications (LOQs). According to the presented results and considering the absence of permissible limits for antibiotics in honey, 74.6% of the tested samples had antibiotic residues more than the LOQ of the method. Background: The aim of the current study was to assess the accuracy of expert predictions, which were derived using a Delphi panel foresight study between 2009 and 2011, on a variety of drug-related topics in Finland in 2020. Methods: The material used to evaluate the accuracy of the predictions consists of published reports on statistics, survey results, official register data, wastewater analyses and official documents. Whenever possible, we used multiple information sources to ascertain possible changes related to the predictions. Results: Between 2009 and 2011, the majority – but not all – of the experts accurately predicted an increase in drug use. Indeed, more people experimented with or used drugs, and more drug residues were found in wastewater monitoring. The experts also correctly predicted an increase in population-level approval of drug use, but this development has been rather slow. Contrary to predictions, there was no marked increase in the use of new synthetic drugs. However, the misuse of buprenorphine increased during the 2010s. In the drug market, unit prices were surprisingly stable over the ten-year period. There were no changes in legislation related to the legal status of drugs, as was foreseen by the experts. However, enforcement moved in the direction foreseen by the experts: more lenient measures have been taken against users. Drug care system reforms favored a combination of mental health and addiction care units between 2009 and 2011, and 2020, as foreseen by the experts. Conclusions: It seems to have been easier for the experts to foresee the continuation of existing trends, e.g., increasing use of drugs or widening approval of drugs, than to predict possible changes in the popularity of distinct groups of drugs such as new psychoactive substances (NPS). Even armed with the prediction that drug imports and wholesale would increasingly fall into the domain of organized crime, this undesirable development could not be stopped. Expert disagreement can also be seen as a valuable indication of uncertainty regarding the future. Antibiotic pollution has become one of the most emerging problems of the modern era. Tinidazole (TDZ) is one the most important nitroimidazole derivative drugs whose use has tremendously increased in the last few years. The proposed research work provides a good alternative cost-effective method for wastewater treatment. In the present investigation, algae were used as a photosensitizer in the treatment of the wastewater that was contaminated with antibiotic residue. The proposed research also provides the probable mechanism involved in the photodegradation of tinidazole. The different factors like concentration and pH of the test solution which play a key role in the photodegradation of drug molecules are also discussed in the present investigation. The result of this study established that the maximum degradation of drug molecules was observed at the algal concentration of 1.6 × 108 Cell/L and approximately 58% of drug molecules were degraded. This study also established that in an acidic medium ie at pH 5 the degradation occurs more efficiently. Results of the current study indicated that the use of algae-induced photodegradation of drug residue became one of the most promising routes for wastewater treatment. Simple Summary: Fasciolosis is a parasitic disease of livestock causing important economic losses worldwide, and it is also a zoonosis. The treatment is based on the use of anthelmintic drugs, but the increase in resistance and the risk of drug residues in food make this approach no longer sustainable. Developing protective vaccines for the control of fasciolosis is postulated as an appropriate treatment, but a better knowledge of the host–parasite interaction is needed. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the hepatic lesions in sheep infected and reinfected with Fasciola hepatica during the acute and chronic stages of infection and the characterization of the hepatic inflammatory infiltrates using immunohistochemistry with CD3, Foxp3, iNOS, and CD163 antibodies. The most remarkable histopathological finding was the presence of large necrotic foci and/or hemorrhages adjacent to enlarged bile ducts containing adult parasites, suggesting flukes may have caused these lesions while feeding. In the literature, necrotic foci/hemorrhages are considered a consequence of parasite migration. In both the primoinfected and reinfected groups, and during acute and chronic stages of the infection, an increase in Foxp3 T cells with respect to uninfected controls and a poor expression of iNOS was found accompanied by a strong expression of CD163, suggesting a marked M2 activation of macrophages in the hepatic lesions. Fasciolosis is an important economic disease of livestock. There is a global interest in the development of protective vaccines since the current anthelmintic therapy is no longer sustainable. A better knowledge of the host–parasite interaction is needed to design effective vaccines. To date, few studies have evaluated host–parasite interaction by comparing infected and reinfected animals. The present study evaluates the microscopical hepatic lesions in sheep infected and reinfected with Fasciola hepatica during the acute and chronic stages of infection. The histopathological study revealed the presence of necrotizing foci (NF1) associated with larvae migration during the early stages of infection in the primoinfected (PI) and reinfected (RI) groups. In the late stages of infection of the PI group and at the early and late stages of infection in the RI groups, extensive necrotizing/hemorrhagic foci (NF2) were found in the vicinity of enlarged bile ducts, some containing adult flukes, suggesting parasites may have caused NF2 while feeding. The immunohistochemical study revealed an increase in Foxp3+ T cells in both PI and RI groups with respect to the UC group and in the infiltrates adjacent to NF1 in the RI groups with respect to the PI group, suggesting the F. hepatica induce Foxp3 T cell expansion to facilitate parasite survival. In addition, in both the PI and RI groups, and during acute and chronic stages of the infection, a poor expression of iNOS was found accompanied by a strong expression of CD163, suggesting a marked M2 activation of macrophages in the hepatic lesions, which may be related with healing processes, and it also may facilitate parasite survival. The main differences between PI and RI animals were the more severe infiltration of eosinophils and Foxp3+ T cells, whereas RI did not modify M2 activation of macrophages which occurs since the early stages of primoinfection. Background: Today, antibiotics are widely used for treatment and feed additives to enhance livestock growth. Antibiotic residues may be found in food of animal origin for various reasons, including ignoring the withdrawal period after treatment, overuse for animals, and contamination of feed with treated animals in animal products. Among animal products, dairy products have a special place in the human diet, and antibiotic residues in them have caused a great deal of concern among consumers. Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate and compare studies conducted in Iran on antibiotic residues in dairy products during 2000–2022. Methods: In this review, 52 eligible studies were collected by searching the Scientific Information Database (SID), Magiran, Google Scholar, Science-Direct, Scopus, and PubMed using the English or Persian keywords such as an antibiotic or antimicrobial residue, Beta-lactam residue, Tetracycline residue, Sulfonamide residue, Chloramphenicol residue, Aminoglycosides residue, Macrolide residue, Quinolones residue, Milk, Raw milk, Pasteurized milk, UHT milk, Powder milk, Cheese, Yogurt, Butter, Cream, Doogh, Kashk, Ice cream, and Iran. Results: According to the reviewed studies, the total prevalence of antibiotic residues in dairy products was 29% (95% CI: 15–43%). Among the seven evaluated antibiotic groups, most studies have been conducted on tetracycline, beta-lactam, and sulfonamide groups, with 16, 10, and 7 respectively, and the highest level of contamination with 663 ± 1540 μg/l is related to tetracycline. Most studies on antibiotic dairy product residues in Iran with 12, 11, and 8 studies are associated with East Azarbaijan province, then Tehran and Khorasan Razavi respectively, and no study has been conducted in 11 provinces of the country. According to the studies, Gilan, Qazvin and Razavi Khorasan provinces had the highest amount of antibiotic residue in milk with an average value of 56.415 ± 33.354, 45.955 ± 4.179 and 45.928 ± 33.027, respectively. Most of the methods used in the studies to measure antibiotic residues in milk were the Copan test kit and the HPLC method, which were used in 19 and 14 studies, respectively. Conclusions: Studies have shown that the prevalence of antibiotic residue in dairy products in Iran is high, so applying an effective strategy and developing the necessary standards in this field to control milk quality is a public health necessity. The findings of this study show that further evaluation of fermented dairy products, especially non-fermented ones such as butter and cream, is needed to prevent adverse health reactions. Tetraploid oysters are artificially produced oysters that do not exist in nature. The successful breeding of 100% triploid oysters resolved the difficulties of traditional drug-induced triploids, such as the presence of drug residues and a low triploid induction rate. However, little is known concerning the biochemical composition and nutrient contents of such tetraploids. Therefore, we investigated compositional differences among diploid, triploid, and tetraploid Crassostrea gigas as well as between males and females of diploids and tetraploids. The findings indicated that glycogen, EPA, ∑PUFA, and omega-3 contents were significantly higher in triploid oysters than in diploids or tetraploids; tetraploid oysters had a significantly higher protein content, C14:0, essential amino acid, and flavor-presenting amino acid contents than diploids or triploids. For both diploid and tetraploids, females had significantly higher levels of glutamate, methionine, and phenylalanine than males but lower levels of glycine and alanine. In addition, female oysters had significantly more EPA, DHA, omega-3, and total fatty acids, a result that may be due to the fact that gonadal development in male oysters requires more energy to sustain growth, consumes greater amounts of nutrients, and accumulates more proteins. There is an imperative need to eliminate pharmaceutical residues from aquatic environments due to their hazardous properties, including toxicity, mutagenicity, and carcinogenicity, particularly when present in water sources. Conventional water treatment methods have proven insufficient in addressing nano-pollutants such as pharmaceutical residues. Consequently, the ongoing quest for economically viable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly removal mechanisms persists. In this particular study, we employed Giant Macroporous Silica (GMS) derived from marine sponges as a promising biosorbent. GMS exhibits commendable characteristics, including a high specific surface area, swift mass transfer capabilities, and non-discriminatory adsorption qualities. The efficacy of GMS in adsorbing carbamazepine (CBZ), a common drug residue, was scrutinized under diverse experimental conditions, including a sorbate/sorbent ratio ranging from 0.005 to 1.500 weight ratio, contact times spanning from 0 to 240 min, and initial pH values ranging from 5 to 9. Remarkably, at a concentration of 1000 µg L−1, GMS demonstrated an attractive adsorption rate (98.88%) of carbamazepine at pH 7.07, within 90 min. To enhance our understanding, we developed an ANFIS model utilizing the experimental parameters as inputs. The developed model exhibited a high correlation coefficient of 0.9944% and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.6693, indicating its dependability in accurately predicting the adsorption of CBZ on GMS. The results of our study highlight the efficacy of GMS in adsorbing CBZ, suggesting its considerable potential for adsorbing other pharmaceutical residues and nano-pollutants. Veterinary medications are necessary for both contemporary animal husbandry and food production, but their residues can linger in foods obtained from animals and pose a dangerous human risk. In this review, we aim to highlight the sources, occurrence, human exposure pathways, and human health effects of drug residues in food-animal products. Following the usage of veterinary medications, pharmacologically active compounds known as drug residues can be found in food, the environment, or animals. They can cause major health concerns to people, including antibiotic resistance development, the development of cancer, teratogenic effects, hypersensitivity, and disruption of normal intestinal flora. Drug residues in animal products can originate from variety of sources, including water or food contamination, extra-label drug use, and ignoring drug withdrawal periods. This review also examines how humans can be exposed to drug residues through drinking water, food, air, and dust, and discusses various analytical techniques for identifying these residues in food. Furthermore, we suggest some potential solutions to prevent or reduce drug residues in animal products and human exposure pathways, such as implementing withdrawal periods, monitoring programs, education campaigns, and new technologies that are crucial for safeguarding public health. This review underscores the urgency of addressing veterinary drug residues as a significant and emerging public health threat, calling for collaborative efforts from researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to develop sustainable solutions that ensure the safety of the global food supply chain. Abstract Veterinary medications used for disease treatment and prevention may remain in animal‐origin foods, such as milk, eggs, honey and meat, which could pose a risk to the public's health. These drugs come from different groups of drugs, mostly with antibiotic, anti‐parasitic or anti‐inflammatory actions, in a range of food matrices including milk, meat or egg. This review is intended to provide the reader with a general insight about the current status of veterinary drug residues in food products of animal origin, detection methods and their public health consequences. The discovery of antimicrobials has led to the development of antibiotics for treating and preventing cattle illnesses and encouraging growth. However, the rise of drug resistance has led to increased antibiotic consumption and resistance among microbes in the animal habitat. This resistance can be passed to humans directly or indirectly through food consumption and direct or indirect interaction. Improper and illegal use, inadequate withdrawal periods and environmental contamination from veterinary drugs are reported to be the major causes for the formation of residue in food products of animal origin. The use of veterinary products above or below the advised level may also result in short‐ or long‐term public health issues, such as the creation of resistant strains of micro‐organisms, toxicity, allergy, mutagenesis, teratogenicity and carcinogenetic effects. To ensure consumer safety, veterinary drug residues in food must be under control.

Background and Aim: Milk contamination for human consumption is one of the biggest concerns worldwide. To prevent milk contamination, it is important to implement sustainable production practices that ensure animal health and guarantee veterinary drugs have been used properly. This study aimed to detect antibiotic residues and microbial contamination in commercially available pasteurized whole milk intended for human consumption. Materials and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study on all brands of pasteurized milk (n = 17) for human consumption in Medellin, Colombia, from February 30 to April 30, 2022. Six milk samples of each brand were collected every 15 days, resulting in 102 samples. IDEXX SNAPduo ST Plus test (IDEXX Laboratories Inc, Maine, USA) was used to detect cephalosporins residues to detect beta-lactam and tetracyclines. We detected mesophilic aerobic bacteria and coliforms using Chromocult Coliform Agar (Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany) and Plate-Count Agar (Merck KGaA), respectively. Results: Beta-lactam residues were found in 24.4% of the brands. No tetracyclines or cephalosporins were detected. Mesophilic aerobic bacteria and coliform contamination were detected in 42.6% and 12.8% of the brands, respectively. No fecal coliform contamination was detected. Conclusion: This study demonstrated the presence of antibiotic residues and microbial contamination in commercially available pasteurized whole milk intended for human consumption in the study area, highlighting its potential public health implications.

Objective: A method for determining the residues of 30 antiparasitic drugs in animal-derived food using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) was established. Methods: The samples were extracted with acetonitrile and 1% ammonia acetic ether and purified by QuEChERS. After purification, Waters ACQUITY UPLCTM BEH C18 column was used for separation, and a gradient elution of 10 mmol/L ammonium formate (containing 0.1% formic acid) aqueous solution, acetonitrile:methanol (50:50, v:v) was performed as the mobile phase. Detection was carried out using electrospray ionization (ESI) in both positive and negative ion modes using multiple reaction monitoring (MRM). Matrix-matched external standard quantification was used. Results: Under the optimized conditions, the 30 antiparasitic drugs showed good linearity within their respective linear ranges, with coefficient of determination (r2) greater than 0.99. The recoveries ranged from 70.1% to 111%, and the relative standard deviations were between 0.10% and 9.1% (n=6). The method detection limit ranged from 0.001 to 0.3 μg/kg, and the method quantification limit ranged from 0.004 to 1 μg/kg. Conclusion: The method is sensitive, accurate, and exhibits good repeatability and stability, making it suitable for detecting various antiparasitic drug residues in animal-derived food.

The application of veterinary drugs has brought great economic benefits, but its unreasonable application has also caused a series of safety problems. The study aimed to establish methods that will provide accurate quantitative information for the monitoring of veterinary drug residues in animal‐derived foods. Selecting nine veterinary drugs in four categories, the study combined quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe technology with high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to detect multiple veterinary drugs in animal foods simultaneously. The study established two rapid, efficient, and accurate HPLC‐diode array detection methods to achieve the simultaneous detection of nitroimidazoles and β‐adrenergic agonists, and the simultaneous detection of benzimidazoles and diethylstilbestrol. The limit of detection of the former was 1.36–2.05 μg/kg and the latter 0.42–0.72 μg/kg. Then the two methods were used to detect veterinary drug residues in 297 animal foods from 10 categories to investigate the drug residues. In a forensic scenario, if biological stains are found in very small quantities, these are usually collected for DNA analyses, considered essential for the forensic investigation and thus excluding possible investigations by other forensic disciplines as forensic toxicology. We developed an experimental study to evaluate the feasibility of analyzing DNA extraction residues obtained from DNA extraction procedures to perform toxicological analysis, with the aim to extract both genetic and toxicological information without affecting or compromising the genetic sample and/or DNA extraction. DNA extraction from four blood samples (fortified with 5 molecules of interest with a final concentrations of 1 µg/mL, 100 ng/mL, 10 ng/mL and 5 ng/mL, respectively) were analyzed with QIAGEN QIAmp® DNA Mini kit. Three waste residues collected from the DNA extraction were analyzed for the toxicological investigation via Solid-Phase Extraction and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography—Tandem Mass Spectrometry analyses (Thermo Scientific™ TSQ Fortis™ II Triple-Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer). The analytical investigation revealed that our analytes of interest were detected in two different residues of the DNA extraction procedure, allowing both genetic and toxicological analyses without affecting the DNA identification. The establishment of a convenient and effective detection method for doxycycline (DC) holds significant importance in drug monitoring and drug residue assessment. In this work, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with excellent and stable luminescence performance (the quantum yield of CQDs was 21.8%) were synthesized by the melting method and employed as probes to monitor the fluorescence intensity variations before and after the introduction of DC. A fluorescence analytical method based on the internal filtration effect (IFE) was developed for DC determination. The mechanism of DC quenching CQDs was verified using fluorescence lifetime tests, absorption spectroscopy, and evaluation of internal filtration parameters. After optimizing experimental conditions, it was found that the DC concentration (CDC) exhibited a good linear relationship with the fluorescence quenching efficiency ((F0-F)/F0) of CQDs in the range of 5–30 µM. The fitted linear equation was Y = 0.01249*CDC+0.03625, R2 = 0.9987, and the detection limit was 2.343 µM (n = 8). This developed method has been successfully applied to accurately determine DC concentrations in both doxycycline hydrochloride tablets and human serum samples. It stands out for its simplicity, rapidity, and acceptable detection performance. This study accessed the potential antimalarial activity of triterpene glycoside of H. atra through targeting orotidine 5-monophosphate decarboxylase protein (PfOMPDC) in P. falciparum by molecular docking. Nine triterpene glycosides from H. atra extract modeled the structure by the Corina web server and interacted with PfOMPDC protein by using Hex 8.0.0. The docking results were visualized and analyzed by Discovery Studio version 21.1.1. 17-Hydroxyfuscocineroside B showed the lowest binding energy in PfOMPDC interaction, which was -1,098.13 kJ/mol. Holothurin A3, echinoside A, and fuscocineroside C showed low binding energy. Nine triterpene glycosides of H. atra performed interaction with PfOMPDC protein at the same region. Holothurin A1 posed interaction with PfOMPDC protein by 8 hydrogen bonds, 3 hydrophobic interactions, and 8 unfavorable bonds. Several residues were detected in the same active sites of other triterpene glycosides. Residue TYR111 was identified in all triterpene glycoside complexes, except holothurin A3 and calcigeroside B. In summary, the triterpene glycoside of H. atra is potentially a drug candidate for malaria therapeutic agents. In vitro and in vivo studies were required for further investigation. These studies are devoted to developing novel analytical methods to assay levofloxacin and florfenicol in different matrices; dosage forms, milk products, meat, and biological fluids. Veterinary drugs are consumed on a large scale, whether administered as food additives or added to drinking water. Besides, these pharmaceuticals are provided for animals as a prophylactic agent, to treat different diseases and to enhance their growth. Veterinary drug residues in food are a significant concern, and their detection, prevention, and management are crucial to ensure food safety and protect consumer health. Therefore, for public health concerns, regulatory authorities have established guidelines to control the limit of veterinary residues in animals and their different food products. This current review involves various methods that have been published to determine different veterinary drugs, including; spectrophotometry, electrochemical methods, and different chromatographic methods. All suggested methods are fully validated under the guidance of International Conference of Harmonization to be suitable for application of the developed methods for their intended purpose. To understand whether there was a drug residue in the rose flower cake, and whether there was a risk of chronic dietary intake. In this paper, the residues of four avermectins in rose flower cake were detected, the residual levels of drug residues were analyzed, and the risk of chronic dietary intake was evaluated. The four drugs were avermectin, doramectin, acetylamineavermectin and ivermectin. A total of 43 rose flower cake samples were collected, and the optimized QuEChERS method was used to pre-treat the samples. The residue levels of the four compounds were determined by high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, and their chronic dietary intake risk assessment and risk rank were performed. Results show that the four kinds of abamectin drugs line of correlation coefficient were greater than 0.99, the detection limit of the range of 0.1-0.7 µg/kg, recovery range of 94.97%-102.09%. Only avermectin was detected in the 4 target compounds, the detection rate was 79%, and residual range of 1.89-4.58 µg/kg. The food safety index analysis (IFS) of the four drugs was 1.3x10-3 for avermectin, 1.0x10-4 for doramectin, 1.7x10-6 for acetylavermectin, and 1.2x10-5 for ivermectin. Risk assessment on four kinds of target compounds, and to the risk of ordering, total four drugs were less than 50. This indicated that the residual level of avermectins in rose flower cakes was not high at present, and the risk was low. Introduction: During administration of chemotherapies, disconnection presents risks for nurses. Thus, it is recommended to flush the infusion line with solvent to reduce this risk and ensure that the entire dose is administered. Objectives of this study were to evaluate flushing practices and to investigate the efficiency of flushing, according to the type of hospitalization, in hospitalization (HU) or day-care unit (DCU), for three drugs. Methods: Twenty secondary infusion lines were collected in five HU and 20 in two DCU. Flushing volumes were estimated by weighing solvent bags. The amount of residual drug was measured for secondary lines by mass spectrometry coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography. Results: Chemotherapies were administered by 26 nurses. All of infusion lines contained chemotherapy after flushing. Flushing volumes, residual concentrations and flushing efficiencies were significantly different between these two types of units. In contrast, flushing volumes administrated did not differ between chemotherapy drugs. Conclusions: Local recommendations are fully implemented in HU and partially in DCU. The use of small volumes in DCU is related to the patient length of stay, it may, also, be due to omitting the average tubing volume. All infusion lines still contained chemotherapy, including those with a flush volume much higher than recommended, showing that the risk of exposure persists. To achieve a rinse volume greater than 50 mL, it is necessary to use at least 100 mL. Introduction: The administration of illicit drugs by injection is associated with considerable harm, including an increased risk of overdose. The chemical analysis of used syringes can enhance knowledge on injecting drug consumption beyond traditional data sources (self‐report surveys). This additional information may be useful during significant global events like the COVID‐19 pandemic. This study aimed to examine a snapshot of the drugs injected at the Medically Supervised Injecting Centre (MSIC) in Sydney, Australia, in 2019–2020. Methods: Used syringes were collected from MSIC across three periods throughout 2019 and 2020 (February 2019, March—April 2020 and June—September 2020). Drug residues were extracted from used syringes using methanol before detection by gas chromatography—mass spectrometry and ultra‐performance liquid chromatography—tandem mass spectrometry. The chemical analysis results were compared to self‐report data obtained from MSIC clients. Results: Heroin (46–53%), methamphetamine (24–34%) and pharmaceutical opioids (15–27%) were the most common drug residues detected. The chemically detected drugs had declining coherence with the drugs self‐reported by MSIC clients across the time periods examined. Discussion and Conclusions: There was no significant change in the drugs injected (heroin, methamphetamine and pharmaceutical opioids) across the three periods collected throughout varying COVID‐19 lockdown restrictions. Changes in the frequency of other drugs injected and discrepancies between chemical analysis and self‐report were potentially related to regulatory changes, degradation or misinformed sales. Chicken coccidiosis costs the poultry industry over GBP 10 billion per year. The main method of preventing and controlling coccidiosis in chickens continues to be the use of drugs. Unfortunately, the prevalence of drug resistance in the field reduces or even eliminates the effectiveness of drugs, and drug residues in the food supply chain can also can be harmful to humans. Therefore, safe and effective anticoccidial drugs are urgently needed. Natural products have many advantages such as being safe, effective and inexpensive and are a sustainable way to control coccidiosis. In this study, the anticoccidial effects of six natural compounds were tested by Eimeria tenella infection. Oocyst production, cecum lesion, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and intestinal microbiota were measured. The results showed that nerolidol had a moderate effect on maintaining both body weight gain and feed conversion ratio. Silymarin and dihydroartemisinin showed significant anticoccidial effects by reducing total oocyst output. Dihydroartemisinin also significantly reduced the cecum lesion caused by Eimeria infection, but this compound may be toxic to the host at such informed doses because it decreases growth and survival rates. In addition, both silymarin and dihydroartemisinin partly restored the microbiota after challenge. This indicates that silymarin, dihydroartemisinin, and nerolidol are effective in the control of chicken coccidiosis. Rifaximin and rifampicin are good broad-spectrum antimicrobials. The irrational use of antimicrobial drugs in veterinary clinics could threaten public health and food safety. It is necessary to develop a reliable detection method of the residue for enhancing the rational supervision of the use of such drugs, reducing and slowing down the generation of bacterial resistance, and promoting animal food safety and human health. So, this study developed an LC-MS/MS method for the detection of rifaximin and rifampicin residues in animal-origin foods. The residual rifaximin and rifampicin of homogenized test materials were extracted with acetonitrile-dichloromethane solution or acetonitrile in the presence of anhydrous sodium sulfate and vitamin C, purified by dispersible solid phase extraction, determined by LC-MS/MS, and quantified by the internal standard method. The specificity, sensitivity, matrix effect, accuracy, and precision of the method were investigated in the edible tissues of cattle, swine, or chicken. In addition, the stability of the standard stock solution and the standard working solution was also investigated. The method was suitable for the muscle, liver, kidney, fat, milk, and eggs of cattle, swine, or chicken, as well as fish and shrimp. The specificity of the method was good, and the detection of the analytes was not affected by different matrices. Both the LOD and LOQ of the two analytes were 5 μg/kg and 10 μg/kg, respectively. The results of matrix effects in each tissue were in the range of 80–120%; there were no significant matrix effects. The average accuracy of rifaximin and rifampicin in different foodstuffs of animal origin was between 80% and 120%, and the method precision was below 20% (RSD). The proposed method showed good performance for determination, which could be employed for the extraction, purification, and detection of residual rifaximin and rifampicin in edible animal tissues. The pretreatment procedure of tissue samples was simple and feasible. The method was highly specific, stable, reliable, and with high sensitivity, accuracy, and precision, which met the requirements of quantitative detection of veterinary drug residues.

Violative chemical residues in edible tissues from food-producing animals are of global public health concern. Great efforts have been made to develop physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models for estimating withdrawal intervals (WDIs) for extralabel prescribed drugs in food animals. Existing models are insufficient to address the food safety concern as these models are either limited to 1 specific drug or difficult to be used by non-modelers. This study aimed to develop a user-friendly generic PBPK platform that can predict tissue residues and estimate WDIs for multiple drugs including flunixin, florfenicol, and penicillin G in cattle and swine. Mechanism-based in silico methods were used to predict tissue/plasma partition coefficients and the models were calibrated and evaluated with pharmacokinetic data from Food Animal Residue Avoidance Databank (FARAD). Results showed that model predictions were, in general, within a 2-fold factor of experimental data for all 3 drugs in both species. Following extralabel administration and respective U.S. FDA-approved tolerances, predicted WDIs for both cattle and swine were close to or slightly longer than FDA-approved label withdrawal times (eg, predicted 8, 28, and 7 days vs labeled 4, 28, and 4 days for flunixin, florfenicol, and penicillin G in cattle, respectively). The final model was converted to a web-based interactive generic PBPK platform. This PBPK platform serves as a user-friendly quantitative tool for real-time predictions of WDIs for flunixin, florfenicol, and penicillin G following FDA-approved label or extralabel use in both cattle and swine, and provides a basis for extrapolating to other drugs and species.

Pharmaceutical-induced environmental contamination demands urgent attention, with around 43% of global rivers facing risks from active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). The entire spectrum of pharmaceutical products, including active and inactive components, requires serious consideration due to continuous emissions and potential hazards to the environment and human health. Discussions on chemical waste reduction face limitations due to incomplete knowledge about their toxicity to humans. Despite various initiatives, collaboration evidence is minimal, and environmental health disparities persist in socially disadvantaged communities, leading to higher disease rates. While awareness of ecotoxicity is growing, the European Union (EU), United States (US) and Canada have taken steps, including disposal procedures, prevention strategies, and focus on concerns like antimicrobial resistance. Antimicrobial drugs and coccidiostat compounds are commonly used in poultry farming. These compounds are subsequently excreted and released into the environment via broiler litter (BL) and can re-enter the food chain as fertilizer or animal feed. Such residue in animal feed can encourage the appearance of antibiotic-resistant bacteria as well as toxicity. Most analytical methods used to identify and quantitate these drug residues are traditional, and are specific to some antimicrobials and present limitations in assessing complex matrixes like BL. The aim of this study was to develop a multi-residue analytic method for assessing 30 antimicrobial drugs and coccidiostats associated with BL. We investigated the presence and the effects of biotic stack treatment on the degradation of drug residue in BL. Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) and solid phase extraction (SPE) were replaced by Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe (QuEChERS) clean-up steps and detected by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). Results show that a wide spectrum of residues were detected from 0.4 to 8.9 mg kg−1. Following lab-scale stacking treatment, tilmicosin and eight coccidiostats persisted in BL (26–100%). Semiconductor materials have become a competitive candidate for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate. However, powdered semiconductors are difficult to execute a fast in situ detection for trace analytes. Here, we developed a new flexible semiconductor SERS substrate by in situ densely growing anatase TiO2 nanoparticles on the surface of cotton fabric through a filtration-hydrothermal method, in which TiO2 exhibits excellent controllability in size and distribution by regulating the ratio of water to alcohol in synthesis and the number of filtration-hydrothermal repetitive cycle. Cotton fabric/TiO2 (Cot/TiO2) substrate exhibits a high SERS activity and excellent spectral repeatability. The developed substrate has an ultra-high stability that can withstand long-term preservation; it can even resist the corrosions of strong acid and alkali, as well as high temperature up to 100 °C and low temperature down to − 20 °C. The flexible substrate can be used to carry out a rapid in situ detection for quinolone antibiotic (enrofloxacin and enoxacin) residues on the fish body surface by using a simple swabbing method, with high quantitative detection potential (up to an order of magnitude of 10−7 M), and even for the simultaneous detection of both drug residues. Detection of pesticide residues in soil samples was conducted using UHPLC-MS/MS. Non-dietary health risk assessment was conducted using calculate chronic daily intake (CDI) from ingestion, inhalation and dermal contact pathways and following non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks in the adults and adolescent. The rank order of pesticide in soil based on their concentration was malathion (0.082 mg kg−1)> cyproconazole (0.019 mg kg−1)> propargite (0.018 mg kg−1)> butachlor (0.016 mg kg−1) > chlorpyrifos (0.0067 mg kg−1)> diazinon (0.0014 mg kg−1)> imidacloprid (0.0007 mg kg−1). Hazard index (HI) values obtained of exposure to pesticides in soil in adults and adolescent were 0.0012 and 0.0035, respectively. Hence, exposed population are at the acceptable range of non-carcinogenic risk (HI < 1). Cancer risk (CR) values due to propargite in soil via ingestion pathway in adults and adolescent were 2.03E–09 and 2.08E–09, respectively; therefore, carcinogenic risk due to the exposure to pesticide contaminated soil was safe range (CR < 1E–06). Nowadays, incorrect apply of antibiotics to treat infections in honey has led to health risks for humans and antibiotic resistance. Current systematic review and meta-analysis conducted to study antibiotic residues in honey. Data were obtained through searching the databases, including Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, and other internal databases. The pooled concentration of antibiotic residues was 5.032 (µg/kg) that ranged from 4.72 to 5.33 (µg/kg). The ranking of antibiotics concentration was found in order of fluoroquinolone (8.59 µg/kg) > tetracycline (5.68 µg/kg) > sulfonamides (5.54 µg/kg) > macrolides (4.19µg/kg), respectively. Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS) method (37.9.7%), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method (34.4%), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method (27.5.8%) were the most used methods in various studies. In order to avoid contamination, proper use of antibiotics, placement of hives at a suitable distance from agricultural environment, and regular control of antibiotic residues in honey seems to be necessary. Background and Purpose: Licorice (liquorice) is a common food additive and is used in Chinese medicine. Excess licorice intake can induce atrial fibrillation. Patients with atrial fibrillation possess constitutively activated G protein‐gated inwardly rectifying K+ (GIRK) channels. Whether licorice affects GIRK channel activity is unknown. We aimed to clarify the effects of licorice ingredients on GIRK current and the mechanism of action. Experimental Approach: A major component of licorice, glycyrrhizic acid (GA), and its metabolite, 18β‐glycyrrhetinic acid (18β‐GA), were tested. We performed electrophysiological recordings in Xenopus oocytes to examine the effects of GA and 18β‐GA on various GIRK subunits (Kir3.1–Kir3.4), mutagenesis analyses to identify the crucial residues for drug action and motion analysis in cultured rat atrial myocytes to clarify effects of 18β‐GA on atrial functions. Key Results: GA inhibited Kir3.1‐containing channels, while 18β‐GA activated all Kir3.x subunits. A pore helix residue Phe137 in Kir3.1 was critical for GA‐mediated inhibition, and the corresponding Ser148 in Kir3.2 was critical for 18β‐GA‐mediated activation. 18β‐GA activated GIRK channel in a Gβγ‐independent manner, whereas phosphatidylinositol 4,5‐bisphosphate (PIP2) was essential for activation. Glu236 located at the cytoplasmic pore of Kir3.2 appeared to be important to interactions with 18β‐GA. In rat atrial myocytes, 18β‐GA suppressed spontaneous beating via activation of GIRK channels. Conclusion and Implications: GA acts as a novel GIRK inhibitor, and 18β‐GA acts as a novel GIRK activator. 18β‐GA alters atrial function via activation of GIRK channels. Antimicrobial resistance is an increasingly widespread phenomenon that is of particular concern because of the possible consequences in the years to come. The dynamics leading to the resistance of microbial strains are diverse, but certainly include the incorrect use of veterinary drugs both in terms of dosage and timing of administration. Moreover, the drug is often administered in the absence of a diagnosis. Many active ingredients in pharmaceutical formulations are, therefore, losing their efficacy. In this situation, it is imperative to seek alternative treatment solutions. Essential oils are mixtures of compounds with different pharmacological properties. They have been shown to possess the antibacterial, anti-parasitic, antiviral, and regulatory properties of numerous metabolic processes. The abundance of molecules they contain makes it difficult for treated microbial species to develop pharmacological resistance. Given their natural origin, they are environmentally friendly and show little or no toxicity to higher animals. There are several published studies on the use of essential oils as antimicrobials, but the present literature has not been adequately summarized in a manuscript. This review aims to shed light on the results achieved by the scientific community regarding the use of essential oils to treat the main agents of bacterial infection of veterinary interest in livestock. Moenomycin A, an antimicrobial growth promoter widely used as an additive in aquaculture feedstuffs, has been restricted for use in the European Union and China due to its potential risk of promoting resistant strains of pathogenic bacteria and causing residues in aquatic animal products. Although methods for analyzing moenomycin A in feedstuffs have been developed, no established method exists for aquatic matrices. In this study, we present, for the first time, a sensitive and validated high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC–MS/MS) method for the determination of moenomycin A in aquatic animal products. Samples were extracted using methanol and purified with the QuEChERS method employing C18 sorbent. The aliquot was dried under a nitrogen stream, reconstituted with methanol-water solvent, and analyzed by HPLC–MS/MS. The developed method exhibited good linearity (r2 > 0.995) over a wide concentration range (1–100 μg/L) and a low limit of detection (1 µg/kg). Average recoveries ranged between 70 and 110% at spiked concentrations of 1, 50, and 100 μg/kg, with associated intra- and inter-day relative standard deviations of 1.25 to 7.32% (n = 6) and 2.91 to 10.08% (n = 3), for different representative aquatic animal production, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported HPLC–MS/MS method for the quantification of moenomycin A in aquatic animal products. The present study evaluates the human health risk of metals in locally consumed herbal preparations used to treat diabetes. Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) was used after microwave-assisted digestion to mineralize the samples. Toxic metal assessment was done by adopting mathematical modeling for carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic risks in the exposed population and comparing the raw results with maximum residue limits (MRLs) set by regulatory authorities. Hazard quotient (HQ) values for Fe, Hg, Cu, Pb, and Zn were recorded above 1. Noncarcinogenic health risks remain in 29% of samples for Fe, 67% of samples for Hg, 17% of samples for Cu, 33% of samples for Pb, and 4% of samples for Zn. Hazard index (HI) values in 33% of samples were above 1. Carcinogenic risks for Pb, Cr, Cd, and Ni were higher than the acceptable limit (1 × 10−6). Carcinogenic health risks exist in 54% of samples for Pb, 58% of samples for Cr, 46% of samples for Cd, and 58% of samples for Ni. MRLs for metals were crossed in samples in varying degrees. This is a harrowing account and may put public health safety at risk. Considering these facts, there should be more investigation into toxic metals in other frequently marketed herbal drugs in the antidiabetic and other therapeutic classes. In this article, a highly crystalline porous imine‐based covalent organic framework was synthesized at room temperature and used as solid‐phase extraction (SPE) adsorbent for the purification and enrichment of trace sulfonamides (SAs) from food samples. The structure of the obtained material was characterized and studied in detail. The extraction process was optimized and the final elution was determined by the ultra‐high‐performance liquid chromatography‐quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry method. Low limits of detection (0.02–0.19 μg/kg) were obtained under optimal conditions, with the recoveries ranging from 70.5% to 105.3% when spiked at different levels. The adsorption process of the material for SAs was fitted by the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm model, and the extraction capacity for Nitrofuran metabolites from food samples was also investigated for comparison. The results demonstrated that the framework was a good candidate SPE adsorbent that can be used for the enrichment of drug residues in complex matrix, and the work may provide a systematic study method for the development of porous adsorbents. Aquaculture located in urban river estuaries, where other anthropogenic activities may occur, has an impact on and may be affected by the environment where they are inserted, namely by the exchange of antimicrobial resistance genes. The latter may ultimately, through the food chain, represent a source of resistance genes to the human resistome. In an exploratory study of the presence of resistance genes in aquaculture sediments located in urban river estuaries, two machine learning models were applied to predict the source of 34 resistome observations in the aquaculture sediments of oysters and gilt-head sea bream, located in the estuaries of the Sado and Lima Rivers and in the Aveiro Lagoon, as well as in the sediments of the Tejo River estuary, where Japanese clams and mussels are collected. The first model included all 34 resistomes, amounting to 53 different antimicrobial resistance genes used as source predictors. The most important antimicrobial genes for source attribution were tetracycline resistance genes tet(51) and tet(L); aminoglycoside resistance gene aadA6; beta-lactam resistance gene blaBRO-2; and amphenicol resistance gene cmx_1. The second model included only oyster sediment resistomes, amounting to 30 antimicrobial resistance genes as predictors. The most important antimicrobial genes for source attribution were the aminoglycoside resistance gene aadA6, followed by the tetracycline genes tet(L) and tet(33). This exploratory study provides the first information about antimicrobial resistance genes in intensive and semi-intensive aquaculture in Portugal, helping to recognize the importance of environmental control to maintain the integrity and the sustainability of aquaculture farms.
