Abstract

International audience; We investigate the causes of the seasonal cycle of the near-surface salinity using a mixed-layer salinity model and a combination of satellite products, atmospheric reanalyses, and in situ observations for the period 2000-2008, in the tropical Atlantic Ocean. We find that the balance differs from one region to another. In the western tropical Atlantic, it is controlled by horizontal advection from March to November and by freshwater flux and entrainment for the rest of the year. In the central tropical Atlantic, it is mainly due to the strong contribution of precipitation in agreement with previous results. In the northeastern tropical Atlantic, all terms contribute to the mixed layer salinity between December and March; during the rest of the year, precipitation and zonal advection mainly control the balance. In the Gulf of Guinea, it is driven by freshwater flux from October to February; from March to July, it is controlled by horizontal advection and entrainment; from August to September, mixed-layer salinity variability is weak. Finally, in the Congo region, it is driven by freshwater flux (precipitation and runoff from Congo River) from September to December, by horizontal advection during January to March, and by vertical entrainment during the rest of the year (April to August). There are some discrepancies between observed and modeled salinity tendencies. Some of them are due to our model formulation, which does not explicitly account for the effect of vertical diffusion. Uncertainties of observation products, which force the model, are also sources of errors.

This paper presents the description of a 2-dimensional shoreline and 3-dimensional shoreline behaviour around a 'storm free' microtidal beach from a 3-year video observation using empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis. The EOF method is applied successfully to delineate 2D and 3D developments that show the beach evolution influenced by the action of waves and tides. The EOF model results are in agreement with measurements that reflect the morphological concepts for the 2D and 3D cases: the first temporal EOF mode which accounts for an overwhelming 80% of shoreline variation reflects the alongshore-averaged cross-shore migration (2D) largely influenced by waves while the higher eigenfunctions with 20% shoreline variation reflect beach deformation/irregularities (3D). Shoreline location is correlated to cross-shore energy flow from waves, while 3D is associated to the longshore energy flow. The influence of wave height increases cross-shore uniform migration and beach seasonality. The results show that with EOF method, beach cusps are clearly identified for 3D developments to be evaluated. Beach cusps are well observed at low tides on video images. Tide and cusps increase the importance of short term events and deformation; at the lowest high tide mark, beach cusps were observed on higher spatial functions of EOF. This indicates that a study of these morphological features as a coupled system, promotes their contribution in predicting 2D and 3D shoreline changes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; The El Nin˜o Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is known as the strongest natural inter-annual climate signal, having widespread consequences on the global weather, climate, ecology and even on societies. Understanding ENSO variations in a changing climate is therefore of primordial interest to both the climate community and policy makers. In this study, we focus on the change in ENSO nonlinearity due to climate change. We first analysed high statistical moments of observed Sea Surface Temperatures (SST) timeseries of the tropical Pacific based on the measurement of the tails of their Probability Density Function (PDF). This allows defining relevant metrics for the change in nonlinearity observed over the last century.

Abstract

International audience; Abstract. El Ni˜no Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the dominant mode of climate variability in the Pacific, having socio-economic impacts on surrounding regions. ENSO exhibits significant modulation on decadal to inter-decadal time scales which is related to changes in its characteristics (onset, amplitude, frequency, propagation, and predictability). Some of these characteristics tend to be overlooked in ENSO studies, such as its asymmetry (the number and amplitude of warm and cold events are not equal) and the deviation of its statistics from those of the Gaussian distribution. These properties could be related to the ability of the current generation of coupled models to predict ENSO and its modulation. Here, ENSO's non-Gaussian nature and asymmetry are diagnosed from in situ data and a variety of models (from intermediate complexity models to full-physics coupled general circulation models (CGCMs)) using robust statistical tools initially designed for financial mathematics studies. In particular -stable laws are used as theoretical background material to measure (and quantify) the non-Gaussian character of ENSO time series and to estimate the skill of 'na¨ıve' statistical models in producing deviation from Gaussian laws and asymmetry. The former are based on non-stationary processes dominated by abrupt changes in mean state and empirical variance.

Abstract

The tropical Atlantic Ocean exhibits several modes o f interannual variability such as the equatorial (or Atlantic Nino) mode, and meridional (or Atlantic dipole) mode. Nonlinear principal component analysis (NLPCA) is applied on detrended monthly Sea Surface Temperature Anomaly (SSTA) data from the tropical Atlantic Ocean (30°W - 20°E, 26°S - 22°N) for the period 1950 to 2005. The objective is to compare the modes extracted through this statistical analysis to those previously extracted through simpler principal component analysis (PCA). It is shown that the first NLPCA mode explains 38% of the total SST variance compared to 36% by the first PCA while the second NLPCA mode explains 22% of the total SST variance compared to 16% by the second PCA. The first two NLPCA modes marginally explain more of the total data variance than the first two PCA modes. Our analysis confirms results from previous studies and, in addition, shows that the Atlantic El Nino structure is spatially more stable than the Atlantic dipole structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
