In the Anthropocene, the era in which humans dominate the ecosystems, Charlotte Mutsaers, a Dutch writer and artist, uses her works (literature and paintings) to shift the anthropocentric narrative towards animals. Barbara Fraipont’s book, Mutsaers en andere dieren: Naar een diergerichte benadering in de Nederlandse letterkunde (2023), explores the representation of animals in Mutsaers works. The study examines the presence of animals as a central theme and critical paradigm in Mutsaers’ oeuvre. The book’s accessible structure and rich theoretical background make it a significant contribution to animal studies in Dutch literature.

This research report pushes back against isolationist accounts of linguistic autonomy, not only in Afrikaans, but across languages and literary traditions. Starting with a focus on recent interactions between Afrikaans and Dutch literary polysystems (both in the Netherlands and Flanders), it combines a critical perspective on 'minor literatures' with methods based in functional literary and cultural interactions. I propose a generalisable transversal and multi-linguistic approach to the study of global literary and linguistic polysystems. This contribution focuses especially on the potential of multilingualism and translation to generate literary histories that can accommodate international and cross-cultural networking and exchange, thereby to complicate separatist constructions of linguistic heritage and identity. In the uchronic novel with dystopian/(post)apocalyptic features Zee Nu (Sea Now) by Dutch philosopher Eva Meijer (2022) the Netherlands is submerged by an exceptional high tide that does not recede. The government reacts slowly and inadequately: the country is flooded and the surviving Dutch become climate refugees in Germany and Belgium. A scientist, an activist and a young writer embark on a boat (later on, with a dog too) in order to uncover the causes of this extreme phenomenon and to pay tribute to dead people, animals and to the devastated ecosystems. In this article I focus on how the novel fictionalizes environmental issues and foregrounds key issues of contemporary philosophers of the Anthropocene as Bruno Latour and Donna Haraway: the relationship between human and nonhuman, the agency of nonhuman and the ethics of response-ability.

This article presents the results of a study focusing on the reception of a fictional story by Kurt Vonnegut translated from English into Catalan and Dutch in three conditions: machine translated, post-edited, and human translated. Participants (n = 223) rated the three conditions using three scales: narrative engagement, enjoyment, and translation reception. The results show that human translation had higher engagement, enjoyment, and translation reception in Catalan, compared to the post-edited and machine-translated translations. However, Dutch readers scored the post-edited translation higher than the human and machine translation, and the highest engagement and enjoyment scores were reported for the original English version. We hypothesize that when reading a fictional story in translation, not only are the condition and the quality of the translation key to understanding its reception, but also the participants' reading patterns, reading language, and, potentially, the status of the source language in their own societies. This essay examines the topic of sexual violence in Middle Dutch literature, centring on the play 'Lanseloet van Denemerken' (c.1405). Although medieval literature is known for its gender-based violence, the topic has not received much attention from scholars of Middle Dutch. This article aims to renew the scholarly debate by analysing the Middle Dutch text from an innovative intersectional perspective, integrating the analytical categories of gender, social status and narrative space and adopting those categories for literary studies. This analysis uncovers new meanings in the play and demonstrates that gender, status and space work together in creating an unsafe situation, in which the female protagonist Sanderijn is raped by the male protagonist Lanseloet. Subsequently, this article analyses recent scholarly publications on 'Lanseloet van Denemerken' to investigate how scholars in Middle Dutch literature are handling the sensitive topic of rape. It is demonstrated that our interpretations and discussions of the medieval text run the risk of being involuntarily influenced by present-day rape myths – false beliefs and attitudes about sexual violence that prevail in our current culture. Therefore, this article calls on researchers' shared responsibility to ensure a continuous and open discussion of sensitive topics in the field of Middle Dutch literary studies. The authors present a dataset containing transcriptions of manuscripts of the Middle Dutch strophic poem Martijn Trilogy by the Flemish poet Jacob van Maerlant. Of his very large oeuvre, Maerlant's Strophic Poems had the longest tradition: originally written in the thirteenth century, copyists and printers continued to disseminate them until about 1500. These ten shorter poems on social, religious, and ethical issues stand out for their unusual and complex stanza form. The Martijn Trilogy was his most successful strophic poem: 17 text witnesses are extant, and the trilogy was imitated and even translated into French and Latin. This dataset contains hyperdiplomatic transcriptions of all witnesses, amounting to a total of 15,814 verses or 79,337 tokens. This open-access dataset abides by the FAIR principles, is licensed under a CC-BY-SA license, and is made available in multiple, complementary file formats. Since these transcriptions are strictly diplomatic, this corpus offers valuable possibilities for research on scribal attributions (scribal profiling), abbreviations, stemmatology, textual stability and more. Research shows that teachers and education are often represented negatively or stereotypically in popular and literary culture, both in the Dutch language area and in Anglophone contexts. Regarding contemporary Dutch literature, though, research on educational representations has until now focussed on small corpora of novels that explicitly deal with education. In this article, we explore the representations of teachers and education in a much larger and broader corpus: the 170 submissions to the bulk list of the prestigious Dutch Libris Literatuurprijs of 2013. We provide a Keyword in Context Analysis of 292 educational representations in this corpus and offer a demographic analysis of the 71 teachers who inhabit the novels under analysis. In doing so, we show that educational representations and teacher characters are relatively common in contemporary Dutch language novels. Our analysis also reveals that literary representations of teachers are predominantly negative in nature, especially regarding their behaviour towards students, their external presentation, and their pedagogical skills. Representations of education in general tend to be even more negative. In that sense, literary representations of education appear to converge with the negative public appeal of the educational sector in the contemporary Low Countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Walter Benjamin published five articles in i10 , a Dutch multi-lingual avantgarde magazine published from 1927 to 1929. Behind these contributions lies a rich practice of journalistic exchange. I explore the threads of this exchange in three ways: through a) the contents of the magazine; b) letters between Benjamin and editor Arthur Muller Lehning; and c) Benjamin's reception in Dutch newspapers in the late 1920s. Exploring Benjamin in this context, gives a sense of the multifaceted value for Benjamin of a new—and young—publishing venue. He brought his own network to the magazine, which benefitted him financially. He was, further, able to draw on the network behind i10, entering, at least by name, into Dutch literary circles. Analyzing Benjamin's work in i10 also gives a sense of the European discussions around new media and the arts and politics of Soviet Russia that took place when Benjamin was thinking and writing about the same subjects. Responding to De postkoloniale spiegel and De nieuwe koloniale leeslijst, this article exposes how few Indonesian voices are heard in conversations on colonial history in the Netherlands today. Representations of the Dutch East Indies as colony prevail over conceptions of Indonesia as independent nation. Through a reading of Gentayangan by Intan Paramaditha, we decentre readings of colonial literature in Dutch Studies by turning to Indonesian literature in translation. Like colonial indies literature preoccupied with nostalgia, this book is also haunted by memory, but of a different anti-colonial character. As Paramaditha's character journeys around the world she is discomforted by Dutch nostalgia for tempo doeloe in the Netherlands, but finds solidarity in encounters with other wanderers who have faced colonization and racialized oppression in different contexts. In our reading of this text in translation, we lean on theories in memory studies to consider: How might Gentayangan as a demonstration of ongoing coloniality support the shift towards a more worldly approach in Dutch Studies? Are postcolonial re-readings from Western loci of meaning-making enough – as found in Spiegel and Leeslijst – or are there more innovative ways to decolonize Dutch Studies by implicating oneself in the power dynamics of ongoing coloniality? Whenever we start worlding Dutch literary studies, we find ourselves in the compartment. Once we move beyond the metropolitan centre(s) of Dutch literature, we encounter the compartments of literatures from or related to Indonesia, the Antilles, South Africa, Suriname, Congo, immigration to the metropolitan centres. This essay discusses 'worlding' as a possible method that can undo the compartments while also tackling the racialized logic that underpin them. After a general description of 'worlding', the essay discusses three recent publications that deal with the colonial past of the Low Countries: De postkoloniale spiegel, De nieuwe koloniale leeslijst and Zwarte bladzijden. Whereas all include aspects that world the discipline, a distinction can be made between the first two projects that involve a recentring on the nation and leave the compartments intact and the third one that offers a more oppositional strategy of worlding that addresses the racial grammar that subtends the discipline of Dutch literary studies and that invites us to imaginative acts of worldmaking. Literary awards play an important role in the production of prestige. Awardjuries typically substantiate their judgements by citing forms of literary quality that they believe are innate to the laureate's work. However, their perception of quality is largely driven by circumstantial factors, such as the author's demographic background, the publishers they are affiliated with, their time already spent in the literary field, and their previously won awards. This article examines the ways in which these circumstantial factors influence awarding behaviour, whilst drawing on field-theoretical approaches to literature. It argues that the more 'prestigious' an award is deemed, the more conservative its judging habitus becomes. In addition, it will be demonstrated, that the internal logic of the literary award scene steers new awards, which try to secure their claim to prestige, towards more conservative choices, as such making it difficult for authors who do not match the 'conservative' profile to win. This contribution addresses the general theme of Multifunctionality and syncretism in non-finite forms. When we see a particular form in a number of different environments yielding different effects, what does it mean to say that this reflects multifunctionality rather than syncretism? As a refinement of multifunctionality the notion of 'multi-effectuality' is introduced: one element participates in different derivations, performing one and the same operation, but yields different interpretive effects depending on the environment. The analysis takes as a starting point the role of the affix -en in Dutch. The canonical view is that when attached to a verb stem, -en functions either as an infinitival marker or as a nominalizing affix. It is shown that this view cannot be maintained. The "functions" of -en are unified by analyzing it as projecting an 'eventuality expression', with different effects depending on the syntactic environment. The analysis is extended to English, focusing on the contrasts between Dutch and English infinitives and on the role of the English -ing affix in gerunds and participles. The discussion proceeds with an analysis of Frisian with its two forms of the infinitive and concludes with some reflections on the relation between syntactic and semantic categories. People living with dementia are often faced with attitudes indicating stigma. Social media platforms, such as Twitter, can allow for self-expression and support, but can also be used to disseminate misinformation, which can reinforce existing stigma. In the present study, we explore whether the stigma toward dementia is present in Dutch language tweets. In total, 969 tweets containing dementia-related keywords were collected during a period of five months in 2019 and 2020. These were analyzed by means of a sentiment analysis, which we approached as a classification task. The tweets were coded into seven dimensions, i.e., information, joke, metaphor, organization, personal experience, politics, and ridicule, using a semi-automatic machine learning approach. The emerging correlations with our use of Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count software for sentiment analysis validate our approach. In the present study, 9.29% of tweets contain ridicule, propagating stigmatic attitudes on Twitter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

‘I shout my name’ – two war stories compared: Etienne van Heerden’s Om te awol (To AWOL) and W.F. Hermans’ Het behouden huis (The house of refuge). The authors compare Om te Awol (1984) by the South-African author Etienne van Heerden, and Het behouden huis (1952) by the Dutch writer W.F. Hermans, to show how both writers process the experience of war. These novels, similar in their style, subject and plot, deal with identity in times of war (respectively the Border War and the Second World War) as well as the main character having to face its ensuing severe mental, cultural, and ideological effects. In this article, the authors argue that Van Heerden and Hermans both write about the problem of identity and the effects war has on culture and language. However, there is a key difference, mainly in Van Heerdens ideology critique and the possibility of healing, a possibility Hermans denies.

– In the historiography of the Dutch East Indies literature, the image has arisen of P.A. (Paul) Daum (1850–1898) as an author whose work experienced a striking transformation during his stay in the Indies: from a colonial to an anti-colonial author. Where Daum still showed himself an out-and-out colonial at the start of his authorship, he is said to have started to see the Indonesians with very different eyes over the years and finally to think and write about them with more nuance and understanding. This article, that focuses on the representation of Indonesians, argues that here is no such development to be found in Daum's attitude towards the indigenous people of the colony. To this end, three works by Daum, published over a ten-year period, are analysed: Uit de suiker in de tabak (From Sugar to Tobacco, 1884), Goena-goena (Guna-guna, 1887) and Aboe Bakar (1894). In Western literature, the Balkans are most often represented in an unfavourable way. A remarkable exception seems to be the Dutch writer A. den Doolaard (1901-1994). He wrote three novels rendering the Balkans in a positive way. The inn with the horseshoe (1933) describes the braveness of an Albanian boy avenging the besmirched honour of his brother. Orient-Express (1934) deplores the decline of the Macedonian liberation movement due to internecine terrorism. The wedding of the seven Gypsies (1939) extols the dissolute lifestyle, associated with Gypsy music. However, the positive qualities the reader is supposed to admire differ essentially from the norms valued in daily life. Taking pleasure in the Balkans seems to be a form of escapism, limited to leisure time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently new attention has been paid to the presence and use of French outside of France in multilingual regions, one of them being the Southern Low Countries. Scholarship focusing on this area has emphasized the presence of French within the Dutch literary culture as well as studied the language attitude of Dutch authors towards French. This article adds a third focus to this scholarship, namely that of the use of French found within multilingual texts from the Southern Low Countries. Through an analysis of a selection of bilingual and trilingual texts, it is determined how French is incorporated in these texts, what functionality it serves and to what extent this function reflects or contradicts findings from the other two views on French in medieval Dutch literary culture. В 1907 году в Санкт-Петербурге впервые отдельным изданием вышел сборник произведений знаменитого нидерландского писателя Мультатули (1820-1887). Книга «Повести, сказки, легенды» содержит перевод 33 фрагментов различных произведений и начинается с обширного предисловия. Составителем сборника, переводчиком и автором предисловия была Александра Николаевна Чеботаревская (1869-1925). Перевод Чеботаревской был хорошо принят российским читателем и во многом стал определяющим в формировании образа писателя. В статье показано, что предисловие Чеботаревской послужило основой для ряда более поздних вступительных статей к русским изданиям романа Мультатули «Макс Хавелар». Кроме того, впервые в отечественном переводоведении исследованы источники, на которые опиралась русская переводчица, и дан ответ на вопрос, к каким нидерландским оригиналам восходят все фрагменты, переведенные Чеботаревской. Это стало возможно благодаря сопоставлению книги «Повести, сказки, легенды» с аналогичными сборниками произведений Мультатули, вышедшими примерно в то же время на немецком, чешском, польском и венгерском языках.

The Stichting tot Bevordering van de Vertaling van Nederlands Letterkundig Werk (The Foundation for the Promotion of the Translation of Dutch Literary Works) was a state-funded quasi-governmental organization established in 1954 to oversee the translation of Dutch literary works into a variety of languages until 1989. One of The Foundation's first key projects was the development of a series of Dutch imaginative works translated into English, eventually called the Bibliotheca Neerlandica, that would implicitly redress the imbalance in the international reception of Dutch literature and its fine-art counterpart in the Dutch Golden Age of painting. The translator, Alex Brotherton, was commissioned by The Foundation to translate three of the volumes and I selected one of these as my case study to consider whether his translation choices always met with success. On comparing his translation with the source text, I highlighted four key areas which were to challenge him and considered his decisions when dealing with proper names, foreign words within a text, titles and his fidelity to the source text. Brotherton was not the only player in the 1960s literary field and I considered others including publishing companies, the copy-editor and press reviews to ascertain the level of influence they had on the final published work. In this article, we place the celebrating journal Nederlandse letterkunde in the historical context of the discipline of Dutch language & literature since the 1990s in the Netherlands. Special attention is paid to the school subject of Dutch, and to the teaching of literature within that subject. We show what developments have led to the current cooperation between academics in Dutch language & literature and didactic experts, who share a concern for the school subject. The coming of the Dutch Strangers, religious refugees from the Southern Netherlands, to various cities in England – specifically London and Norwich – in the middle of the sixteenth century, is a new stage in the history of the presence of Dutch speakers in Britain; Dutch-speaking churches were founded, and printers in England became involved in printing Dutch texts. The ease with which these new communities established themselves, however, depended on a pre-existing presence of communities of Dutch speakers, and a long history of Anglo-Dutch cultural, mercantile and political interactions. This paper examines evidence for the existence in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth century of an Anglo-Dutch infrastructure along which people moved, and on which communities were built [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pseudo-translations are a recurring phenomenon within literary history. This article examines three Dutch authors who, towards the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, opted for a Russian pseudonym. Using Jérôme Meizoz' notion of posture, this article charts the trajectory of these literary scams and explores the rules of this imitation game through contextual, paratextual and textual evidence while also looking on the impact of these mystifications on the career of the respective authors. Finally, the works of the three fake Russians and their reception can also shed light on the place and prestige Russian literature held in the literary field of the Netherlands during a period in which Russian literature was less accessible than today. This article presents some of the evidence we have for spoken and written Dutch in medieval Britain. It presents three case studies from Wales, Scotland, and England respectively. In Wales, the existence of a Dutch-speaking colony in Pembrokeshire is well known, but this article documents Dutch words both in the medieval writings of Gerald of Wales and in the modern dialect. In Scotland, I focus on a copy of a Dutch letter by Wouter Michiels and discuss the language and the identity of Michiels. In England, I focus on the remarkable quadralingual manuscript of the Book of Privileges. I conclude by pointing to the existence of other fascinating sources for the social history of Dutch in medieval Britain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dutch reading culture is so international that it is fair to say foreign texts in Dutch translation are part of Dutch literature. But translation of literature 'into Dutch' is itself not without pitfalls, it proves to be an arena where Dutch diverging linguistic norms become visible. Retranslation can be a means to negotiate these complex target culture norms. In the Dutch language literary field the policy of avoiding 'Flemish' for the Dutch language book market seems to have been consistent and widespread as e.g. the case of Richard Scarry's ABC-books shows. Three consecutive translations of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Books, seen from a cultural-political angle, clearly show how the unity or heterogeneity of the Dutch speaking literary field is negotiated. My paper demonstrates how retranslations can serve as negotiations between not only source and target culture but even within the target culture itself. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cornelius van Til developed the Presuppositional Apologetic approach of engaging with non-biblical worldviews, that can be simplified in a twostep process. First, the apologist must assess the competing worldview honestly by using its own logic and principles. This will show that any worldview not based on Scripture will always be self-contradicting and logically incoherent. Second, the apologist must present the Biblical response to the different aspects of the worldview to show that one may find hope and a coherent understanding of the world. This process will be applied to the worldview of the SACP. To do this, its worldview will be divided into five aspects based on James Anderson’s TAKES method – namely, Theology, Anthropology, Knowledge (epistemology), Ethics, and Salvation. Following this method, various logical and ethical problems of the SACP’s worldview will be clear, as well as the Christian response to them. The following article aims to give a Reformed presuppositional critique of the South African Communist Party’s (SACP) worldview. The TAKES method of worldview analysis is used (Anderson, 2018), because it speaks to the most important aspects of a worldview, namely those of Theology, Anthropology, Knowledge (Epistemology), Ethics and Salvation. The twofold approach of the presuppositional method is used while considering these five aspects. In his introduction to a new edition of Van Til’s book, Christian Apologetics, William Edgar gives a helpful summary of the presuppositional method, breaking it down in two steps. The heart of Van Til’s apologetic approach is twofold. These are not meant to be sequential steps, but complementary moves. First, the apologist must get over onto the ground of the unbeliever for argument’s sake and show him that his claims cannot succeed. This does not mean conceding ground, but, rather, patient exploration, as though a particular form of unbelief were true, in order to show how impossible it is. With confidence, the apologist will know that there is no sufficient basis for meaning and value (or “predication” as Van Til liked to put it) in his friend’s view. Gently, but firmly, he will “remove the iron mask”, or “take the roof off” the house of unbelief, to show how dark it is without the Lord ... Second, the apologist should invite the unbeliever over onto Christian ground, for argument’s sake, and show him how meaning and value are established by the biblical worldview. This is the equivalent of saying, with the psalmist, “O taste and see how good the Lord is.” In so many ways, this means preaching the gospel (Van Til, 2003:7). Following this twofold approach, this article will first evaluate each of the five aspects of the SACP’s worldview to determine whether it is logically coherent and consistent. The internal contradictions within and between each of the five areas will be investigated. This can be done because “the natural man is never fully consistent” in his worldview, and the apologist should “seek to make men ever more epistemologically self-conscious” (Bahnsen, 1998:411, 416). Accordingly, the Christian apologist can and should show that any worldview not based on God’s revelation will never be consistent. By showing the contradictions inherent in a non-Christian worldview, the apologist seeks to prove how weak and incoherent these worldviews truly are – in this case, that of the SACP. In the second place, this article seeks to provide the biblical alternative to what the SACP believes and show how this is more logically consistent and more in line with human flourishing. The apologist’s job is not only to point out the untenability of other worldviews, it is also to offer hope. This article assumes that the only sure source of hope is found in a consistent Christian worldview. Second, the apologist should invite the unbeliever over onto Christian ground, for argument’s sake, and show him how meaning and value are established by the biblical worldview. This is the equivalent of saying, with the psalmist, “O taste and see how good the Lord is.” In so many ways, this means preaching the gospel (Van Til, 2003:7). Following this twofold approach, this article will first evaluate each of the five aspects of the SACP’s worldview to determine whether it is logically coherent and consistent. The internal contradictions within and between each of the five areas will be investigated. This can be done because “the natural man is never fully consistent” in his worldview, and the apologist should “seek to make men ever more epistemologically self-conscious” (Bahnsen, 1998:411, 416). Accordingly, the Christian apologist can and should show that any worldview not based on God’s revelation will never be consistent. By showing the contradictions inherent in a non-Christian worldview, the apologist seeks to prove how weak and incoherent these worldviews truly are – in this case, that of the SACP. In the second place, this article seeks to provide the biblical alternative to what the SACP believes and show how this is more logically consistent and more in line with human flourishing. The apologist’s job is not only to point out the untenability of other worldviews, it is also to offer hope. The Reformational resistance literature of the Dutch Revolt, 1555 to 1590, was an important historical impetus to the development of politicophilosophical principles in the Reformational fold. The culmination of this process was the systematic conceptualisation of these principles by the Herborn political philosopher, Johannes Althusius (1557-1638). The Dutch Revolt of the sixteenth century contributed in various respects to the development of a more nuanced Reformational political philosophy: stronger emphasis on personal liberty, constitutional rights and privileges, and representative political institutions ‒ all of which surfaced in Althusius’ politico-covenantal theory. Although the points of departure of classical Reformational political philosophy form the basis of the political thought of Althusius, his work also reflects the impact of sixteenth century Dutch thought and the profound changes brought about by the Dutch resistance literature of that century. Martin van Gelderen noted that the most important point of divergence between the political thought of Dutch Reformed Protestants and Calvin concerned freedom of conscience. Though Calvin was not at ease with notions of liberty, and, in contrast to Luther, Calvin even distrusted the idea of Christian liberty, as many had abused it to shake off all obedience to God and to break out into unbridled licentiousness, Dutch Reformed authors of the Revolt, grounded civil liberties and rights in the fundamental right to liberty of conscience. This article sets out to chart the success of the Dutch novelist, poet and travel writer Cees Nooteboom, who has achieved literary fame in several countries of the world while recognition in his home country lagged behind. To analyse the reasons for the conflicting images attributed to this cosmopolitan author, I will look behind the curtains of the transnational production and reception of his writings, investigating his success in five central or semi-central languages (Heilbron 2010). The study of how this writer has succeeded in transcending the peripheral position of the Dutch language in the world literary system will be carried out by combining the sociology of translation with reception studies and imagological considerations. Nooteboom appears to be a peculiar case of image building: he is internationally represented as a Dutch and a European writer, but his lack of Dutchness appears to have hindered his recognition in the Netherlands. The aim of the article is to present the book by Małgorzata Dowlaszewicz Diabeł w legendzie. Wyobrażenie diabła antropomorficznego w średniowiecznej literaturze niderlandzkiej, published in 2020. The researcher analyzed the anthropomorphic devil figure on the basis of two collections of exemplars and legends Gulden legende and Der Byen Boeck, translated into Middle Dutch from Latin. This article discusses the ongoing crisis in the field of literary studies, relating these problems and challenges to the problem of writing literary histories. It advocates a functionalist approach to literary phenomena, taking into account institutional frames and discursive strategies which are developed in order to structure and legitimize literary practices and literary evolution. These theoretical and methodological premises are applied to the very complex years immediately after the Second World War in Flanders (the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium). In particular, it is demonstrated how the very notion of 'classicist poetry' as a defensive practice clearly reveals an intricate variety of conceptions aimed at tackling the problems poets are confronted with in a new era. This article focuses on a book that deals with a pandemic and recently received renewed attention in the Dutch language area: De Goden gaan naar huis (The Gods Will Return Home) by A. den Doolaard. The book was translated into Slovak in 1974 by Júlia Májeková. After the Second World War, Den Doolaard's works appeared only in reprint in Czech and only this novel was translated into Slovak. This article argues that the consequences of space travel, where American astronauts cause a pandemic upon their return from a mission to Mars, was found to be a fruitful theme in the kind of 'desired' literature during the Communist regime. Not even this novel, however, escaped strict censorship. What makes this novel special is that both the author himself and the interventions in the text. Previous studies of radical thinkers have brought us few examples of female radicals from the Low Countries, even if the seventeenth-century Dutch Republic was a hub for radical thought which offered a relatively female-friendly climate. In this article, we explore how new perspectives and modes of analysis, better adjusted to the restrictions and opportunities women experienced, make women's radical thought visible. By doing so, we aim to present a more balanced perspective on what might count as female radical thought in the early modern Low Countries (1500–1800). Starting from the notion of "agency," we analyze the life, work and relations of three Dutch authors, as well as representations of female radicalism in two literary works, in order to rebalance the notion of radicalism in a woman's world. Anna Bijns, Meynarda Verboom and Margaretha van Dijk were not radically disruptive in the sense of operating completely outside of male-dominated domains. Instead, they gained agency by negotiating their position in patriarchal knowledge systems and by bending conventions within male-dominated networks so that their voices could be heard. This paper presents a part of the author's doctoral thesis concerning the Czech reception of Dutch literature in the first half of the twentieth century. It examines the Czech translations of Kinderen van ons volk and Het donkere licht written by Antoon Coolen and their reception in Czech newspapers and magazines. The aim is to provide an answer to the questions of how the translations were received at the time and whether these value-judgements agree with the current perception of the quality of the translators' work.

This article discusses literary translations from Dutch between 1990 and 2020, i. e. from the first post-revolutionary year to the last completed year. We are interested in what the literary market looked like after the Velvet Revolution, who translated and keeps translating, and what the criteria are for selecting Dutch works for translation. As a prolific translator of prose and poetry, as well as a literary critic and (starting in the 1920s) editorial consultant for various Italian publishers, Giacomo Prampolini (1898-1975) played a pivotal role in introducing Dutch literature to the Italian public. With a primary interest in Dutch and Flemish, he also focused on lesser-known literatures and languages, including Scandinavian, Czech, and Cuban. This article investigates how Prampolini's activities as a cultural mediator, in particular with regard to Dutch literature, responded to (and opposed) the evolving political landscape in Italy during the fascist, post-war, and Cold War periods. Previous scholarly investigation - including an interview with Gaetano Prampolini (Giacomo's son and former professor of Anglo-American Literature at the University of Firenze, who is actively preserving the memory, correspondence, and books of his father), conducted by the author of this article together with Andrea Berardini - has already produced a wealth of detailed information on this topic. Prampolini's life and works will be explored in more detail in the frame of the shifting socio-political context of twentieth-century Italy with regard to his interest in Dutch literature (his essays in magazines and translations), in the first section; his personal associations with Dutch authors, in the second; his anthologies and opinions as a consultant of publishing houses, as well as his magnum opus Storia universale della letteratura (Universal History of Literature, first ed. 1938), in the third and closing section. All his activities as a cultural mediator of Dutch literature are set against the backdrop of the political compromises and/or engagement that characterised cultural life in his time. In this article the position of Hungarian Nobel laureate Imre Kertész (1929-2016) in the Dutch literary field will be analysed based on Even-Zohar's polysystem theory and its previous implementation in the field of Dutch literary studies. It will be shown how the initial reception of Kertész's works was enthusiastic but limited – Kertész quickly 'made a name for himself' in cultural circles, but was not widely discussed in mass or popular media. After his winning of the Nobel Prize for Literature (in 2002) a shift is noticeable – not only are his works from that moment onwards more frequently reviewed in circuits that until then had ignored him, also the significance of his 'mentions' change. Kertész is more often referred to in articles and reviews to underscore a point that the author of the article or review wishes to make – and this point is increasingly extra-literary, or even political. Despite his growing popularity, the Dutch writer Auke Hulst (1975), whose oeuvre ranges from multimedia travel books to science fiction-like novels, has remained under-researched in academic scholarship. This paper provides an introduction to this author and an analysis of his work, examining Hulst's self-presentation, his poetics, his (non-)fictional books and his place within contemporary Dutch literature. The image of the outsider, which is of vital importance for Hulst's authorship, runs as a continuous thread throughout the discussion. The first section uses several assertions made in interviews, public talks and forewords to elaborate on Hulst's 'autobiographical' poetics and to elucidate how the author often presents himself as a 'literary' outsider (positioning himself outside the constraints of Dutch literature) and as a 'social' outcast (in relation to his traumatic childhood). The second section deals with Hulst's travel books, in which he conjures up the image of a solitary traveler, who flees from the burdens of home and society in search for freedom, authenticity, insight and connectedness. The third section discusses Hulst's novels, which are centered on outcasts, the (inner and outer) worlds they find refuge in, and the obstacles they are confronted with. In the final section, Hulst's outsider position in Dutch literature is critically revisited by connecting his oeuvre with twenty-first-century literary trends. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyzes a dataset of over 11,000 book translations from Dutch published in the last two decades to give a global picture of recent outgoing translation flows. It examines four main categories – genre, author national grouping (Dutch/Flemish), target language, and translation grant status – revealing children's literature and fiction to be important export genres; a steady increase in the number of translations of works by Dutch authors and a stagnation in the number of translations of works by Flemish authors; central positions for German, English and French as important target languages, semi-peripheral positions for Spanish, Italian and Danish and an emerging position for Chinese; and a remarkable rise in the number and percentage of translations that received translation grants. The article goes on to explore translation grants in more detail, examining the 'literary quality' criterium and the 'market-correcting' justification used by the Dutch Foundation for Literature and Flanders Literature (formerly known as the Flemish Literature Fund). This paper aims to explore translation flows from Dutch into Serbian in the period between 1991 and 2015, and to identify the most important trends in the selection and production of translations in the context of core-periphery theory. In this study, a model proposed by Pięta will be used for data analysis. This model is structured around five key questions: what was translated, when was it translated, how was it translated, who translated it, and why was it translated. The first part of the paper will be focused on presenting and describing the data, followed by a discussion of the findings in the second part, where we will try to explain how various factors intertwine and influence each other.
