We estimate the effects of robotization on labor supply in Manufacturing, Services and the whole of the South Korean economy using exponential hazard and a random effects logit methodologies over the period 1999-2019. Our findings suggest that a larger operational stock of industrial robots in manufacturing is associated with manufacturing (non-manufacturing) workers becoming more (less) responsive to a change in wages in their decision to quit to non-employment, whilst the ease with which firms can poach workers is found to be unaffected by robotization.

The main aim of this work is to explain the Chilean gender wage gap using a dynamic monopsony model to estimate the labor supply elasticities at the firm level. Our results suggest that the elasticities of labor supply to firms are small, which implies that firms have labor market power. We also found that depending on the especification, Chilean men would earn approximately 19% - 28% more than women as a result of the difference in labor supply elasticities by gender, ceteris paribus. Furthermore, we find that in the long run, the magnitude of between-firm differences in elasticities are higher than within-firm differences, which suggests that the gender wage gap is driven by structural factors that generate gender sorting to firms. Finally, using the same methodology, we find that the elasticities for a high-income countries (e.g. the United States) are higher than those obtained for a middle-income country (e.g. Chile) for both men and women, which suggests higher labor market frictions in middle-income countries. The main difference between USA and Chile comes from the low labor supply elasticity of Chilean women, which appears to be explained from their low recruitment elasticity from nonemploeyment.

We exploit regional differences in labour market density to conduct a simple empirical test of dynamic monopoly and selection wage theories. According to selection wage theories employers offer above-average wages in order to attract more applicants. This allows them to be choosier and to select only the most productive workers. High wage offers reach more potential applicants in densely populated regions and can therefore be expected to be more important there. Observationally similar predictions arise in models of dynamic monopsony. The empirical implication, that firm-size wage effects should be more pronounced in urban labour markets, is tested empirically based on the German employment register data. Our results are in favour of monopsony and selection wage theories.

This paper uses a panel of about 6000 French establishments to test some implications of the modern theory of dynamic monopsony or upward sloping labour supply curves for average firm wages. Panel estimates provide strong evidence of a much larger long run employer size - wage effect (ESWE) than found previously, while controlling for worker quality and compensating differentials with lagged wages, and for profitability (rent sharing). Employment expansion also has a positive effect on wages, providing further evidence for upward sloping labour supply (as distinct from the effect of shocks in a perfectly competitive labour market).
