This article presents the results of evaluative research on the temporal and spatial dynamics of land cover in the headwater area of the city of Guarapuava, Paraná, between 2002 and 2018. The River Pedras basin is Guarapuava's headwater area and water quality depends on the type and forms of land cover management. This research was developed from spatial data obtained by aerial photogrammetric surveys, carried out in the years 2002 and 2018. Interpretation of land cover classes was performed using photointerpretation (GIS) and field recognition techniques. The results showed an expansion of areas associated with forest extraction (reforestation/afforestation), agricultural (commercial and mechanized agriculture) and livestock (field) activities to the detriment of the reduction of areas with shrubby vegetation (capoeira) and areas used for traditional agriculture. SOCIAL enterprises , *PORTFOLIO diversification , *BUSINESSPEOPLE , *SEMI-structured interviews , *ECOSYSTEMS - Abstract
The purpose of this study is to offer a perspective of the international ecosystem of social enterprises from the perceptions and expectations of various agents, in order to identify how to strengthen the field in Brazil. The literature on social enterprises and social enterprise ecosystems was reviewed. Through an exploratory qualitative approach, twenty-nine semi-structured interviews were conducted, complemented with documentary collection. The analysis reinforces the importance of three possible elements for consideration in Brazil: the diversification of impact investments, the qualification of social entrepreneurs and the encouragement and promotion of a global movement towards a new mindset. The results summarize a framework for the promotion of social enterprise ecosystems, contributing to the Brazilian debate and the promotion of knowledge in the field. From the perspectives of international actors, the study aggregates new data for future research as well as practical ways to promote the social enterprises' ecosystem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ecosystem services are tangible and intangible benefits provided by ecosystems that benefit human well-being. The aim of the present research is to address these services’ distribution throughout the Recife and Jaboatão dos Guararapes’ beaches, Northeastern Brazil. The importance of acknowledging how ecosystem services affect beach environments, which were modified by uncontrolled urbanization in the Brazilian coast, and the consequent erasure of this region’s ecosystems are quite clear. Rates recorded for pre-selected parameters resulting from data collection evidenced significant ecosystem services’ loss in places presenting higher urbanization rates, such as Candeias and Boa Viagem counties, which present short extension beach line due to coastal erosion. Results from 120 semi-structured questionnaires have shown that beach visitors see these environments as important element for human well-being maintenance, as well as encourage environmental education practices and conservation-related public policies. Highlighting how ecosystem services are organized and affect urban beaches is essential for decisions made about projects aimed at wakening visitors and residents’ awareness about them, but to make this population think of mitigation actions to reduce the impacts of the herein shown loss on them, in the long run.

Although the origins of the Circular Economy (CE) are formally visualized in various disciplines and schools of thought in evolution since the 1970s, the results show that environmental economics and Industrial ecology were decisive in promoting its development. It is estimated that the application of the CE would positively impact global GDP by 1.1%, promoting the creation of jobs, a greater resilience of the economies and contributing to the goals outlined in the 2030 agenda. The purpose of this research is to improve the understanding of the background and growing importance of (CE) as a model of sustainable development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to the cold climate and altitude, to identify trends in the dynamic vegetation and the main factors that contribute to changes in vegetation cover in grassland areas is essential to understand climate change in mountainous regions. Landsat-8 OLI and Landsat-1 MSS images from 1973 to 2022 of Morraria do Urucum and Serra do Amolar were pre-processed in the GEE cloud platform and QGIS. The resampling method per pixel in the scale of values defined for vegetation Campos de Altitude was used to show changes in vegetation cover and its dynamics through the NDVI index. In both study areas, a continuous trend of significant reduction of vegetation in highland grasslands was observed over 50 years. The average decrease was 49% for Urucum (less 2,164 hectares) and 43% for Amolar (less 3,959 hectares). The use of GHG to obtain remote sensing data combined with temporal image analysis offers the potential to quickly perceive trends in large- and small-scale vegetation cover change. Purpose: This study aims to understand how organizations accelerate digital transformation (DT) and leverage innovations in digital services in the modus operandi of dynamic capabilities (DC) development. DT provides an agile resource mobilization in relation to the operational flexibility and to the technological and informational capabilities. Originality/value: This study contributes with a new theoretical-applied perspective on agility as a necessary competence for DC development, being investigated in an emerging country, in this case, Brazil. The development of DC that are suitable for DT becomes critical for capturing opportunities in the dynamic digital environment. Design/methodology/approach: Forty companies in the Brazilian territory were investigated in order to explore the relation between DC and DT, focusing on agility and based on the logic of literal and theoretical replication of case studies. The theoretical framework was applied to investigate companies from three empirical fields (energy, automotive, and digital services), within the triangulation of secondary sources, management reports and internal documents. Findings: The cases analyzed provide evidence that agility does not presuppose strong DC in sensing, as it depends on services' maturity. We highlight the mediation of the applied use of intangible resources and digitized assets that speed up the seizing and transformation of the business. In the context of digital assets in intensive environments, we propose that DT strategy may be used with analytical intelligence and agility by integrating technological processes. Process models, e.g., BPMN models, may represent how companies in an ecosystem interact with each other. However, the business model of the same ecosystem, e.g., expressed by an $$e^{3}value$$ e 3 v a l u e model, is often left implicit. This hinders the proper analysis of the ecosystem at the business level, and more specifically financial assessment, for which process models are less appropriate. Therefore, the question is if we can somehow derive $$e^{3}value$$ e 3 v a l u e models from BPMN models. This would not only allow for proper business model analysis but would also facilitate business model mining, similar to the success of process mining. However, although an $$e^{3}value$$ e 3 v a l u e model and BPMN model represent the same ecosystem, their perspectives differ significantly. Therefore an automated derivation of an $$e^{3}value$$ e 3 v a l u e model from a BPMN seems not to be feasible, but we can assist the $$e^{3}value$$ e 3 v a l u e model designer with practical guidelines. We explore and test our guidelines in two real-world settings, we then analyze and evaluate its application to better understand their limitations and how to improve them.

The integration between different knowledge fields was proposed by the Population-Environment analysis, addressed by Daniel Joseph Hogan in his research, projects, and publications. This integration was mostly based on spatial, demographic, and sociological approaches and analyses. The geographic space and demographic aspects interactions such as urban sprawl and migration are discussed in this work, according to Hogan's contributions. In the author's research, the relationship between demographic studies, Sustainability, and Sustainable Development concepts is analyzed with the space component. This approach is discussed in the current time, also communicating with the field of Spatial Demography. Initiatives and studies involving a well-predicted result or not of such connection of Sustainability, Sustainable Development, and geographic space are also considered. In this sense, Hogan's studies on the themes of Sustainability and Sustainable Development also bring us the concepts of Carrying Capacity and the possibility of considering demographic studies in different scales of analysis and their respective spatial contexts. Finally, it is proposed the consideration of Sustainability and Sustainable Development as dynamic concepts, depending on their historical, political, social, and economic frame, as well as their geographic location. This consideration can be a path for effective policies and actions for environmental preservation, social equity, and economic efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many classification systems were developed to help in the mission of describing climate, but none of them is able to meet all areas of human activity. A system developed by Holdridge in 1947, called "life zones", is considered the most ecological climate classification system because of the use of biotemperature. Several countries already have a life zones map and the purpose of this study is to classify each Brazilian municipalities according to this system. Temperature, precipitation, altitude and latitude data, provided by Alvares et al. (2013), were applied according to the methodology described by Holdridge (2000). The ecological life zones map was compared with the vegetation map through correlation matrices, which generated indices ranging from 0 to 100%. The results showed that Brazil has 35 life zones. The most common are tropical moist forest and tropical premontane moist forest, covering almost 50% of the country's area. After the analysis of correlations, we could see that 21 LZs have more than 80% of their surfaces covered by two or less types of vegetation. The LZs distribution was consistent to the characteristics of each region, in terms of vegetation and climate; therefore, the Holdridge system can be considered a relevant and specific option for decision making related to agricultural and forestry activities. - Abstract
This article proposes an analysis of animals in travel reports, written in the context of Portuguese colonisation in America during the 18th century, based on Deleuze and Guattari's theory of multiplicities. The concepts of smooth and striated are used to interpret the scientific classification process applied by the settlers to living beings in the Amazon, which we call colonial striation, in order to transform the "Amazonian ecosystem" (EA) into a "colonial ecosystem" (EC), arguing that the transplantation of the bovine species was fundamental for the success of the Portuguese civilising project in the Amazon. We also mobilised the concept of rhizome to demonstrate how parrots created a web of relationships with human beings in Portuguese colonial society, challenging the boundaries between humanity and animality, based on travel reports written by architect Antônio Landi and geographer Lobo D'Almada., Este artigo propõe uma análise sobre os animais nos relatos de viagem, escritos no contexto da colonização portuguesa na América durante o século XVIII, a partir da teoria das multiplicidades de Deleuze e Guattari.

ABSTRACT: Biodiversity plays a key role in human welfare by providing agricultural, economic, and health benefits. However, following the industrial revolution, the rapid expansion of the human population and subsequent economic activities have caused a dramatic loss in global biodiversity, resulting in significant disturbances to ecosystems and our own living conditions. Accordingly, the conservation of biodiversity has become one of the most important challenges for humanity. The vast numbers of plants, animals, and microorganisms, the enormous genetic diversity of these species and the different ecosystems to which these organisms belong are all part of a biologically diverse planet. A substantial proportion of the world’s biodiversity has been destroyed, this loss is a catastrophe for all living species, including humans. Fortunately, we are working to remedy the destruction of our ecosystems. Herein, we summarized the discovery and development of biodiversity as a field of study and discuss the importance of the genetic and metabolite diversity. We proposed potential solutions to the loss of biodiversity with the aim of facilitating further exploration and identification of biodiversity, contributing for human welfare through the conservation of human habitats.

The present study aimed to evaluate some chemical and physical attributes of the soil, as well as the litter accumulated above ground in two areas at different fallow times after pebble and sand exploration, compared to a secondary forest. The study was carried out in the municipality of Capitão Poço, Pará, Brazil. Each study area has about 5 ha. The three areas are composed of a forest fragment (FOR), a mined area with fallow of 48 months (DA48) and an area mined in a period of 18 months (DA18). The variables analyzed were soil density, soil particle density, soil fertility and litter physical quality. FOR obtained higher values of litter biomass in almost all factors analyzed. Just the water holding capacity of the litter in this area together with the weight of the fresh straw. In general, it was observed that it is more appropriate to use the fallow observed in the DA18 area for intervention through recovery practices to take advantage of natural regeneration., O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar alguns atributos químicos e físicos do solo, bem como a serapilheira acumulada acima do solo em duas áreas em diferentes épocas de pousio após a exploração de seixo e areia, em comparação com uma floresta secundária. Transnational organized crime is perhaps one of the most challenging threats to government institutions. Therefore, understanding the power dynamics between actors outside the law and the population of particular urban and rural sectors is one of the most critical national security and defense concerns. This article proposes the application of a series of concepts derived from theories of the natural sciences to understand how, in some regions of Colombia, criminal activities have been perpetuated, which threaten the multidimensional security of the State, activities whose structure has, on some occasions, has supplanted the State in its functions. Mountainous natural complexes of Altai cross-border territory is a unique object of studies into their durability against an external impact since they represent a complex mosaic structure. Authors used an integral characteristic as an assessment factor, which allowed to determine the durability of their soil cover. First, the river layer was converted into the scanning pattern. Next, all characteristics were translated into relative values, During the research, it was established that those ecosystems that formed on terrain consisting of steep slopes were more susceptible to adverse natural phenomena. It was discovered that the landscape is an optimal unit for determining the durability of ecosystems. The article provides results of an integral assessment of the degree of ecosystem's ecological durability against an external impact. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Through the Ecos Study we investigate possibilities for musical structuring based on theories of emergence, finding a fertile territory for experimentations within Agostino Di Scipio's paradigm of Audible Ecosystems. The inclusion of the acoustic environment as an active component of the musical system led us to rethink classical techniques of sound synthesis and modelling, some traditional models of electroacoustic performance, and to criticize the very role of interactions in a qualitative perspective. A positive feedback control model has been developed aiming at understanding the behaviour and the structure of the ecosystem supporting the implementation of the Spatial Instrument, a core element implemented through MAX/MSP patch and that offers a logical rationale for organizing speakers and microphones in the acoustic space. We introduce the underlying theoretical debate and present the feedback control mechanism as the basis from which the Spatial Instrument is developed.

Ecosystems contribute, through direct or indirect Ecosystem Services (ES), for the human well-being. Thus, to maintain ecosystems healthy condition, ecosystem-based management addresses interactions between human activities and environment, focusing on the sustainable use of these services. The aim of this research is to provide support for an integrated coastal management, based on an ecosystemic perspective, for Ilha de Santa Catarina (ISC) and surrounding bays and sea areas, Florianópolis municipality. To reach this goal it is necessary to map the island ecosystems, to analyze the ecosystem services, and to define those services that are basic for the human well-being, that is, services that have the greatest capacity to contribute to a safe and adequate livelihood. The mapping allowed the classification of 14 ecosystems. Marine ecosystems correspond to 51.9% of the study area and the terrestrial ones to 37.3%. The anthropogenic urban and rural areas correspond to 10.8% of the study area. Six basic ESs were identified in the ISC: fish stocks, shoreline protection, aquifer recharge, fresh water supply, pollution mitigation and natural nursery; those associated to 11 mapped ecosystems. The Information System created allowed quantitative and qualitative exploration on ecosystems and their services and improved already existing data. In addition, it established spatial relationships between systems and services, allowing conditions to future research in the region.

Els autors referits ens permeten identifi- car alguns principis de relació activa amb la realitat ambiental i enunciar respostes a fenòmens de degradació., In this paper we present and discuss the concept of ecocriticism as well as different ways through which it can be read in chosen African literary texts. We have selected authors Paulina Chiziane, Dina Salústio, Ruy Duarte de Carvalho, among others, departing from narratives where the importance of eco- systems is apparent. The dimension of environmental preservation is visible in the alerts they highlight and in the forms that they choose to describe the relation- ships between the natural worlds and their human counterparts. We also consider historical, anthropological and philosophical descriptions in these texts; they are in fact presented as complex archives and multidimensional documents incorpo- rating memories on space and territory. The authors present multiple possibilities for the identification of principles of active relation with current realities and sig- nal responses to environmental degradation., Neste ensaio apresentamos o conceito de Ecocrítica e consideramos as possibilidades da sua discussão a partir de textos literários africanos. The Atlantic Forest Biome, considered one of humanity's hotspots, is formed by several forest formations that are at risk of extinction. Based on the above, the objective is to compare the capacity of tree regeneration under different moisture conditions in a Seasonal Semideciduous Forest in the south of Espírito Santo. To survey the vegetation, the method of sampling in plots was used, in which 10 plots of 10 x 5 m were demarcated at random in Scenario 1 (wet) and Scenario 2 (dry). All individuals with height ≥ 50 cm and Diameter at Chest Height ≤ 2.5 cm were collected. The botanical material was collected, dried and identified with the help of specialized bibliography and circumscription according to APG IV. The phytosociological analysis was performed using the FITOPAC 2 application. The parameters evaluated were those proposed by Mueller-Dombois and Ellenberg, Shannon-Wiener diversity index, Pielou evenness, ecological group, analysis via descriptive statistics and determination of dispersion by the Index of Payandeh. The results of the survey in Scenario 1 and Scenario 2, make a total of 357 individuals distributed in 16 families and 45 species. Scenario 1, despite having fewer individuals than scenario 2, is richer, has better phytosociological indices, greater diversity and better representation than Scenario 2. Both scenarios are in an intermediate stage of succession and present an aggregated distribution pattern. The analysis via descriptive statistics demonstrates that Scenario 1 is more homogeneous and has a lower standard deviation.

In the mid-15th century, and with the increase in European sea travels, contacts between Europe and the rest of the world became regular. Ships became primarily responsible for intercontinental connections as well as for the circulation and transport of people and animals, raw materials and goods, knowledge and technology, diseases, pathogens, and healing practices. Long-distance travels shortened distances, brought people and places closer together, made ports and port cities privileged spaces of contact, exchange, and miscegenation. In Europe, the location and the hybrid nature of these spaces made them prone to entry and spread of new diseases, requiring local governments to create and implement prophylactic and health control measures. In the 18th century, reflecting an increasing globalization process, these concerns went far beyond the European universe. Colonial territories have become spaces for experimentation of control and prevention measures. These procedures have been consolidated, participating in a process of construction of medical knowledge and practices that benefited both from the development of European medical and pharmaceutical science, as well as from the incorporation of non-European knowledge and practices, made possible by contacts between geographically and culturally different peoples. In the Portuguese Empire, the coastal areas emerged as privileged spaces for observation and study of the building of this process. In there it was possible to regard identification and knowledge of diseases and local healing practices, resulting from the interaction with the native populations, or regarding the imposition of biomedical practices related to the European pharmacopoeia. The peculiar situation of these sea-land interface areas allowed a better insight into how the interaction between different knowledge and practices was stimulated in the different geographies of the Empire leading to define specific procedures to prevent and/or control spread of diseases, especially in the case of epidemics. Thus the sea also become a vehicle for circulation of agents (human and non-human) that, in certain situations, were central, as in the case of pathologies eradication program, enabling thinking about the various aspects of human/non-human interaction in the social construction of diseases. If recognizing a disease can be a quick process, finding causes and antidotes can be time-consuming and costly, in a space-time marked by advances, setbacks and disparate realities that even compromise the effectiveness of the solutions found, as evidenced by efforts and measures to contain the current COVID-19 pandemic. From this perspective, the true history of diseases in their relationship with coastal areas also calls for a discussion about the “health” of seas, rivers, and oceans that have not only determined and nurtured their existence, but have also contributed to generate new landscapes, and new relationships between human and non-human communities within them, and to demonstrate the link between marine and coastal ecosystems and human populations health. publishersversion published

Mestrado Bolonha em Economia e Gestão de Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação Digital platforms are becoming increasingly important in today’s society and economy. The progress in technology and the always-growing number of internet users has given power to platforms, not only creating new industries but also disruptively changing the ones that already existed. This is a widely studied topic which, in turn, gives plenty of opportunities to advance the study of this phenomenon. Based on a literature review on platforms, ecosystems, and internationalization, this dissertation intends to participate in this effort by exploring the effects that new complementors in new local ecosystems have on platforms’ internationalization and its Ecosystem-Specific Advantages both locally and internationally. To answer these questions, an explanatory case study is developed. It is based on two contrasting cases, Aptoide and Zomato Portugal. This work concluded that complementors are vital for the platform’s value creation and differentiation over its rivals. For platforms that cannot transfer their complementors from one ecosystem to the other, including local complementors in their new ecosystem is crucial for the successful operation in the new country or region. Finally, complementors help the platform adjust to the cultural preferences of the users, which augments the value that new users perceive from it, helping it to establish itself.
