Agricultural expansion into natural habitats causes soil fertility decline after a period of cultivation. This study investigated changes in soil exchange properties in different farm types at Dompem and Adansam in the Forest and Forest–Savannah transition zones of Ghana as influenced by the duration of cultivation. Sixty farms were selected for soil sampling through a reconnaissance survey. The soils were subjected to physicochemical analysis. The results showed that the Dompem soils were loamic, had more amorphous Fe and Al oxides, were strongly acidic and had low contents of exchangeable acidity, a low sum of exchangeable bases (SEB), low effective cation exchangeable capacities (ECECs) and low available P. Conversely, the Adansam soils were arenic, slightly acidic and had relatively higher SEBs and ECECs. Interestingly, soil organic carbon (SOC) in the Dompem soils declined by >10% in relation to the duration of cultivation and showed rapid reductions within three years. Correspondingly, soil bulk density, CEC and SEB declined. In Adansam soils, only δpH declined in relation to the duration of cultivation. Soil organic carbon accounted for >50% of the ECEC and 49% of the SEB in Dompem soils but 36% of δpH in the Adansam soils. An improved identification of the environmental variables that can be used to predict the content of soil organic carbon (SOC) stored belowground is required to reduce uncertainties in estimating the response of the largest terrestrial carbon reservoir to environmental change. Recent studies indicate that some metal cations can have an active role in the stabilization of SOC, primarily by coordinating the interaction between soil minerals and organic matter through cation bridging and by creating complexes with organic molecules when their hydration shells are displaced. The effective cation exchange capacity (CEC eff.) is a measure that integrates information about available soil surfaces to which metal cations are retained. Therefore, we critically tested the relationship between CEC eff. and SOC content using regression analyses for more than 1000 forest sites across Switzerland, spanning a unique gradient of mean annual precipitation (640–2500 mm), elevation (277–2207 m a.s.l), pH (2.8–8.1) and covering different geologies and vegetation types. Within these sites, SOC content is significantly related to CEC eff., in both topsoils and subsoils. Our results demonstrate that, on a pH-class average, in Swiss forest topsoils ( 5.5, between 59 and 83% of subsoil CEC eff. originates from exchangeable calcium, whereas in acidic soils exchangeable aluminum contributes between 21 and 44% of the CEC eff. Exchangeable iron contributes to less than 1% of the variability in CEC eff. Overall this study indicates that in Swiss forests subsoils, CEC eff. strongly reflects the surface of soil minerals to which SOC can be bound by metal cations. The strength of the relationship between CEC eff. and SOC content depends on the pH of the soil, with the highest amount of variation of SOC content explained by CEC eff. in subsoils with pH > 5.5.

Despite common knowledge that the metal content adsorbed by fine particles is relatively higher compared to coarser particles, the reasons for this phenomenon have gained little research attention. The research study discussed in the paper investigated the variations in metal content for different particle sizes of solids associated with pollutant build-up on urban road surfaces. Data analysis confirmed that parameters favourable for metal adsorption to solids such as specific surface area, organic carbon content, effective cation exchange capacity and clay forming minerals content decrease with the increase in particle size. Furthermore, the mineralogical composition of solids was found to be the governing factor influencing the specific surface area and effective cation exchange capacity. There is high quartz content in particles >150 μm compared to particles <150 μm. As particle size reduces below 150 μm, the clay forming minerals content increases, providing favourable physical and chemical properties that influence adsorption. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The fertility of farmed soils in parts of the Papua New Guinea (PNG) highlands reputedly has been declining for some time owing to population pressure. To assess the extent of the problem, a survey of sweet potato gardens was conducted across four of the highlands provinces and information on soil variables was obtained for gardens on soils of volcanic and non-volcanic origins. In the absence of fertilizer application, soil fertility in the humid tropics is largely a function of soil cation exchange capacity (CEC), and soils of low CEC had previously been reported in this region. In the present study, relationships between effective CEC (ECEC) and other soil properties in moderately acidic soils (pH 5.5–6.3) were investigated to see if there was scope for improving soil cation retention characteristics through management of key soil variables. For volcanic soils of varying allophane content, ECEC was, unexpectedly, negatively correlated with soil C and soil C/N, most probably because of the formation of humus–allophane complexes which had facilitated organic matter accumulation whilst dramatically reducing the free negative charges on the material. Given the latter outcome, the indigenous practice of heaping compost in the centre of soil mounds appeared to be one of the best strategies for circumventing the problem of low CEC, as nutrients in the compost are held in an environment virtually independent of the surrounding soil mineralogy. Although the positive correlation between soil pH and soil ECEC was weak for volcanic soils, it was concluded that liming might nevertheless be an effective means of enhancing the nutrient retention characteristics of these soils provided the practicalities and costs were not prohibitive. Despite the increasing prevalence of salinity worldwide, the measurement of exchangeable cation concentrations in saline soils remains problematic. Two soil types (Mollisol and Vertisol) were equilibrated with a range of sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) solutions at various ionic strengths. The concentrations of exchangeable cations were then determined using several different types of methods, and the measured exchangeable cation concentrations were compared to reference values. At low ionic strength (low salinity), the concentration of exchangeable cations can be accurately estimated from the total soil extractable cations. In saline soils, however, the presence of soluble salts in the soil solution precludes the use of this method. Leaching of the soil with a prewash solution (such as alcohol) was found to effectively remove the soluble salts from the soil, thus allowing the accurate measurement of the effective cation exchange capacity (ECEC). However, the dilution associated with this prewashing increased the exchangeable calcium (Ca) concentrations while simultaneously decreasing exchangeable sodium (Na). In contrast, when calculated as the difference between the total extractable cations and the soil solution cations, good correlations were found between the calculated exchangeable cation concentrations and the reference values for both Na (Mollisol: y=0.873x and Vertisol: y=0.960x) and Ca (Mollisol: y=0.901x and Vertisol: y=1.05x). Therefore, for soils with a soil solution ionic strength greater than 50 mM (electrical conductivity of 4 dS/m) (in which exchangeable cation concentrations are overestimated by the assumption they can be estimated as the total extractable cations), concentrations can be calculated as the difference between total extractable cations and soluble cations. Shrub encroachment into open grasslands is an extensive land cover change that influences the accrual and depletion of soil carbon (C) stocks, yet the mechanisms underpinning the direction and magnitude of soil C gain or loss due to encroachment are poorly understood. In this study, we quantified and compared surface (0–5 cm) C stocks in shrub-encroached and open grassland savanna on similar plinthic soil and topographic position, and determined controlling edaphic factors. Soil C content and C stocks were on average 148% and 117% greater in shrub-encroached grassland soil, with recorded values of 14.19 g C kg−1 and 0.91 kg C m−2 respectively, compared to 5.73 g C kg−1 and 0.42 kg C m−2 determined in open grassland soil, respectively. The shrub-encroached grassland exhibited a lower soil C:N ratio compared to the open grassland, indicating greater N mineralisation. The soil C content and stocks were positively correlated with effective cation exchange capacity (r = 0.73, P < 0.05) and exchangeable calcium (r = 0.71), manganese (r = 0.64) and zinc (r = 0.61), but negatively correlated with soil bulk density (r = −0.69). These findings suggest that total C content and stocks in the surface plinthic soil of the studied shrub-encroached grassland are chemically stabilized via complexation interactions with polyvalent cations. The mechanisms for increasing soil pH buffering capacity (pHBC) and soil resistance to acidification by peanut straw biochar were investigated by undertaking indoor incubation and simulated acidification experiments using two Ultisols derived from tertiary red sandstone and quaternary red earth. The biochar increased the pHBC and resistance of the two Ultisols to acidification. The addition of 3% biochar increased the pHBC of the two Ultisols by 76% and 25%, respectively. The increased resistance of the soils to acidification led to the inhibition to decrease in soil pH and the activation of soil Al during acidification. The protonation of carboxyl groups on the biochar surface was the main mechanism responsible for resisting acidification of the Ultisols when the pH was between 4.5 and 7.0. The higher soil pH (>6.0) after biochar application and the large number of carboxyl groups on the biochar surface were essential if biochar was to significantly increase the resistance of soils to acidification., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Two hundred soil samples from the A(p) horizon of a reed canarygrass field overlaying several different but related soils in northern Minnesota were analyzed for plant-parasitic nematodes and 22 edaphic factors. Pratylenchus penetrans was the predominant nematode taxon. Others were Aglenchus agricola, Tylenchorhynchus spp., Heterodera trifolii, Paratylenchus spp., Tylenchus maius, and Criconemella sp. Five nematode taxa, P. penetrans, A, agricola, Tylenchorhynchus spp., H. trifolii, and Paratylenchus spp., were correlated with particle size, Tylenchus maius and Criconemella sp. were correlated with effective cation exchange capacity. Nematode field spatial arrangements were related to a combination of statistically significant positive and negative soil factor effects on the nematode populations. Contour maps derived by geostatistical techniques were used to visually validate statistically significant correlations of nematode and soil data. Contour mapping to supplement traditional statistical techniques can be used to achieve a more holistic approach to studies of nematode-soil interrelationships.
