Syzygium cumini seeds are recalcitrant, thus cannot tolerate drying and storage. The aim of this study was to evaluate the longevity of these seeds under different storage conditions and to assess the effect of osmotic treatment with polyethylene glycol (PEG) and abscisic acid (ABA) on reducing sensitivity to desiccation and increasing the longevity of these seeds. Seeds were desiccated until they reached preestablished moisture contents (40, 35, 30, 25 and 15%) and allowed to germinate. With 25% moisture content, germination was approximately 40%, and, with 15%, germination did not occur anymore. In the treatments aimed at reducing sensitivity to desiccation, seeds were incubated for 15 days in a solution of PEG (-1.88 MPa) or PEG (-1.88 MPa) + ABA (10-4 M), desiccated until they reached the preestablished moisture contents mentioned above, and then allowed to germinate. Five conditions were tested for storage: plastic bag in a cold room (8-10 °C; 45% RH); plastic bag in an air-conditioned room (20 °C; 60% RH); paper bag at room temperature; PEG solution at -1.88 MPa at 20 °C; and PEG solution at - 1.88 MPa + ABA 10-4 M at 20 °C. Germination tests were carried out after 15, 30 and 90 days of storage. The best storage condition was in a plastic bag in an air-conditioned room, which was capable to keep a germinate rate close to 100% for up to 90 days. Under the conditions tested, osmotic treatment with or without ABA did not reduce sensitivity to desiccation and did not prolong seed longevity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RESUMO A maioria das plantas arbóreas sofre mudanças morfológicas, fisiológicas e bioquímicas durante a transição da fase juvenil para a adulta, principalmente, com relação ao potencial de clonagem, vigor de crescimento e resistência a doenças. A carência de estudos científicos sobre o tema em nível de plantas lenhosas, principalmente em termos de espécies florestais tropicais, tem dificultado os avanços da propagação vegetativa na silvicultura clonal intensiva. No presente trabalho, os principais conceitos sobre a aplicabilidade da juvenilidade, maturação e do rejuvenescimento de plantas, com enfoque especial em espécies florestais são descritos e discutidos.

RESUMO Este trabalho traz a descrição anatômica de cinco espécies de madeiras (Pachystroma ilicifolium, Esenbeckia leiocarpa, Cariniana estrellensis, Ocotea porosa e Cassia ferruginea), comumente utilizadas na construção civil. As descrições apresentadas demonstraram que as espécies do estudo podem ser separadas pela anatomia do lenho, o que indiretamente contribui não só com garantias de segurança, mas também com a conservação das espécies florestais.

Este estudo foi desenvolvido com duas espécies florestais, Anadenanthera colubrina (angico branco) e Peltophorum dubium (canafístula), a primeira ocorrendo na floresta pluvial, e a segunda em áreas de floresta estacional decidual e semidecidual, cerrado, floresta ombrófila densa e matas ciliares, e teve como objetivo estudar a influência de diferentes qualidades de luz e da ausência desta na germinação das sementes das referidas espécies. Para tanto foram testadas quatro condições de luz: branca, vermelha, vermelho-extremo e sem luz. Os parâmetros analisados foram a porcentagem de germinação e o índice de velocidade de germinação das sementes e a comparação entre as médias dos tratamentos foi feita pelo teste de Tukey à 5% de probabilidade. Pelos resultados obtidos para A.colubrina conclui-se que: a) a luz vermelha apresenta uma maior germinação em relação a ausência de luz e a luz vermelho extremo e b) a luz vermelha proporciona uma maior velocidade de germinação para as sementes em relação as outras qualidades de luz testadas. Para Peltophorum dubium os resultados obtidos foram: a) não há diferença estre as condições (presença e ausência de luz) e qualidades de luz (luzes branca, vermelha e vermelho extremo) testadas para valores de germinação e b) com relação a velocidade de germinação, a luz vermelha proporcionou uma resposta germinativa das sementes significativamente mais rápida em relação a ausência de luz

The present study was carried out in the neighborhoods "Hermanos Cruz", "Carlos Manuel", "Montequín" and "Calle Martí" belonging to the municipality of Pinar del Río, with the aim of identifying causal plague organisms associated with urban trees in the city of Pinar del Rio, Cuba. A floristic inventory of forest trees was carried out up to the family and species level, as well as the collection of samples of plant organs with symptoms of parasitic diseases and/or the presence of phytophagous insects. The inventory of urban trees in the city of Pinar del Río revealed 13 forest species belonging to 9 botanical families and 12 genera. The most represented family was Meliaceae. In addition, the "Hermanos Cruz" distribution presented a greater abundance of forest species. The species of urban trees serve as hosts to 21 harmful organisms that include eight causal agents of parasitic diseases, 3 orders, 11 families and 13 species of phytophagous insects, with a greater representation of Hemiptera and Lepidoptera. Harmful organisms showed a greater presence in the forest species like Callophylum antillanum, Grevillea robusta, Acasia mangium, Hibiscus elatus, Gmelina arborea, Tectona grandis y Eucaliptus sp. The application of organic residuals generated on substrates is an alternative that has been studied, seeking to solve the problem that involves the recycling of waste generated, mainly by cities. Sewage sludge is a residue derived from sewage treatment plants and as it is a primary source of nutrients and organic matter, its use in the composition of substrates or as a fertilizer has been evaluated. As it is an input of low commercial value, its use can contribute to the reduction of inputs in the nursery and also bring environmental benefits due to its recycling. The substrate influences the development of the plants, being essential the production of quality seedlings, the good development in the field. Given the above, this bibliographical study sought to synthesize the main results obtained in scientific experiments published from the year 2009, involving the use of the sewage method in the composition of substrates for the production of seedlings of native Brazilian tree species. The main results observed in the specialized literature, showing that the use of waste in the composition and composition of substrates, can lead to improvements in physical and chemical aspects, in the qualitative parameters of the species, positively impacting plant growth and development and environmental sustainability, with reduction of disposal in landfill and environmentally correct recycling of waste. Optimization in the use of inputs in the production of seedlings of Corymbia citriodora and Eucalyptus dunnii. Corymbia citriodora and Eucalyptus dunnii are species of relevant importance due to the quality of the wood and growth potential in Southern Brazil. Therefore, we aimed to identify containers and doses of controlledrelease fertilizer capable of enhancing the morphophysiological quality and growth of these species in the nursery, aiming for the proper management of these inputs. The seedlings were produced in two volumes of containers (50 e 110 cm³), filled with Sphagnum peat-based substrate, mixed with different doses of controlledrelease fertilizer (CRF) NPK 15-09-12 (0, 3, 6, 9 e 12 g L-1 of substrates). In addition, the morphological (height, stem diameter, leaf area, dry weight of shoot, root, and total) and physiological (chlorophyll a and b index and quantum yield of the photosystem II) attributes were evaluated. The morphological attributes proved to be suitable indicators of the quality of C. citriodora and E. dunnii seedlings, allowing to recommend the container of 50 cm³ and the doses of 9.0 g L-1 of controlled-release fertilizer for both species. Um método eficiente para avaliar a qualidade fisiológica das sementes é o teste de envelhecimento acelerado, frequentemente utilizado em laboratórios para esse fim. Contudo poucas são as informações para sementes de espécies florestais nativas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar o comportamento fisiológico de sementes de Peltophorum dubium submetidas ao envelhecimento acelerado. O teste de envelhecimento acelerado foi conduzido utilizando as temperaturas de 40, 41, 42 e 45 °C durante os períodos de 24, 48, 72 e 96 horas. Ao término de cada período realizou-se o teste de germinação em temperatura constante de 25 °C e substrato vermiculita. As variáveis analisadas foram: germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação (IVG) e tempo médio de germinação (TMG). Os tempos e temperaturas utilizados favoreceram a superação da dormência das sementes.

O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o potencial de uso de imagens de alta resolução espacial para a extração da área de copa de árvores em floresta nativa utilizando classificação supervisionada. Uma imagem do sensor multiespectral a bordo do satélite Worldview-2 foi adquirida, na qual foram testados três algoritmos de classificação digital de imagens. Com os resultados das classificações, foram delimitadas 51 copas de árvores, que foram localizadas em campo para a coleta de informações como diâmetro na altura do peito (DAP), altura estimada, diâmetro de base, identificação, e medição de 8 raios de copa para formar a área de copa (AC). O algoritmo SVM apresentou o melhor resultado dentre os métodos de classificação testados. Foi encontrado um R² de 0,57 entre AC em campo e o DAP. A relação AC/DAP indica que houve um aumento da área de copa à medida que aumentou o DAP. O R² entre a AC obtida por satélite e o DAP foi de 0,55. A obtenção do parâmetro AC via classificação supervisionada pode servir de base para delimitação de copas, porém, deve-se ter cuidado com este processo para não superestimar as áreas, devido à complexidade do dossel de uma floresta nativa.

The regularization of rural properties in the molds of the New Forest Code depends on the silvicultural study of the native species of the Brazilian biomes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the initial growth of five native tree species of the Atlantic Forest, with a view to their use in forest restoration projects. The following species were produced in the nursery, planted in the field, and evaluated for performance: Araucaria angustifolia, Mimosa scabrella, Trichilia claussenii, Schizolobium parahyba, and Cordia trichotoma. These species were distributed in two different areas, based on the randomized block experimental design. In experiment 1, the species A. angustifolia, M. scabrella, and C. trichotoma were distributed in three randomized blocks, each composed of 11 plants of each species. In experiment 2, the species A. angustifolia, M. scabrella, T. claussenii, and S. parahyba were distributed in three randomized blocks, each one composed of five plants of each species. In general, S. parahyba and M. scabrella showed faster development than the other species and, in this regard, are promising candidates for forest areas constitution or reconstitution in which there is interest in obtaining economic returns in less time. Araucaria angustifolia and T. claussenii showed relatively low development, whereas C. trichotoma showed intermediate development in relation to the other species studied. Despite their differences in performance, all species proved to be suitable for use in reforestation, mainly in the region where the study was developed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Xiloteca é uma coleção científica de madeiras identificadas com dados de coleta disponíveis e que é representativa da diversidade biológica. É um referencial para estudos e pesquisas na área botânica e tecnológica, tanto para produtores, como para comerciantes de madeira, servindo também para comparação e identificação de novas amostras de madeira. A xiloteca em estudo está associada ao herbário do Centro de Pesquisas do Cacau, que atualmente é um dos maiores da região nordeste e conserva a mais importante coleção de espécimes vegetais representantes da Mata Atlântica do sul baiano e norte do Espírito Santo. O objetivo desse estudo é dar visibilidade às informações presentes nessa xiloteca. Com o aumento da visibilidade da xiloteca para uma maior audiência – pesquisadores e público em geral –, espera-se valorizar informações sobre o patrimônio das espécies vegetais do sul da Bahia, resguardando dados de importante relevância para a compreensão da diversidade florestal da região.

Properties assisted by the project Semeando o Verde: environmental conservation, labor and income ( Joint Venture UENF/FNMA) were monitored to characterize the level of environmental adequacy of small rural farms in the North (Campos dos Goytacazes and Conceição de Macabú) and Serrana (Santa Maria Madalena and Nova Friburgo) regions in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Besides evaluating the environmental suitability of the farms according to current legislation, the profile of producers and their interest in forest plantations were characterized. Water sources, rivers, ditches, woods were identified and the producers´ demands established. Environmental suitability for almost all the farms is required, with a demand varying between 2285 and 4943 seedlings per farm among the four municipalities. The farmers´ interest in forest species is addressed to those with economic income, with only little interest in environmental services. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The different shading levels, as well as the quality and quantity of light can influence the development and formation of seedlings of forest species. The objective of this study was to evaluate different types of shading, aiming to obtain Tabebuia serratifolia seedlings with higher quality and better yield, when compared to full sun treatment. The treatments used were: full sun, 50% black polyethylene shading screen, 50% black polyethylene + 100% polyester fibers, transparent plastic and 100% polyester fibers. The plots were organized in a completely randomized design, with the treatments represented by environments, containing 6 replications, 8 plots and 144 seeds per treatment. The parameter analyzed up to 30 days was the emergence percentage, at 60 and 100 days, height and diameter were collected, while dry matter weight of root, shoot, total, dry matter weight of root/shoot ratio and Dickson quality index were evaluated with the end of the experiment. For emergence percentage, base diameter, root dry biomass and total dry biomass, there was no significant difference in the studied treatments. The time spent in the environments interfered with the emergence and development of Tabebuia serratifolia species, where the best environment was the one with the lowest light intensity, that is, shading with plastic + 100% polyester fibers. O sucesso no cultivo de espécies florestais, como o sabiá (Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia Benth), depende, essencialmente, da utilização de mudas de boa qualidade. Nessa etapa da produção, diversos materiais possuem potencial de uso, principalmente, resíduos orgânicos, notando-se, contudo, pouca informação a respeito do potencial de utilização desses resíduos na produção de mudas. Diante do exposto, objetivou-se avaliar o desenvolvimento inicial de mudas de sabiá em função da utilização de substratos orgânicos. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação pertencente ao Departamento de Ciências do Solo da Universidade Federal do Ceará, Fortaleza, Ceará. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado com quatro tratamentos, esterco bovino + areia (E.B), esterco caprino + areia (E.Ca), esterco de coelho + areia (E.Co), todos na proporção de 1:1, e controle a base de areia (A) com seis repetições. Aos 84 dias após a semeadura as plantas foram coletadas para a determinação das seguintes variáveis: número de folhas (NF), altura de plantas (ALT), diâmetro do caule (DC), comprimento da raiz (CR), massa seca da parte aérea (MSPA) e massa seca de raiz (MSR). Com exceção da variável CR, todas as variáveis foram influenciadas significativamente pelo uso dos substratos. O NF apresentou maiores médias quando as plantas foram cultivadas em esterco de caprino ou bovino. Em relação à ALT e DC, constatou-se comportamento semelhante ao NF, no entanto, para o DC, o esterco de coelho foi estatisticamente semelhante ao bovino e caprino. Assim, mudas de sabiá podem ser produzidas em substrato base de estercos bovino e caprino em mistura com areia na proporção de 1:1. O melhor desenvolvimento inicial de mudas de sabiá se dá com a utilização de substrato à base de esterco bovino.

This study aimed to determine the energy productivity of the different compartments of above ground biomass of forest species: Acacia mearnsii De Wild, Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, Mimosa scabrella Benth and Ateleia glazioviana Baill distributed in different spacing in planting: 2.0x1.0m, 2.0x1.5m, 3.0x1.0m and 3.0x1.5m, at ages of 1 and 3 years. The study was conducted in an experiment in the city of Frederico Westphalen-RS, in experimental design of randomized complete block with three replications. The determination of the energy productivity was carried out through the measurement of values of above ground biomass and power calorific value of each compartment. The different planting spacings induced different yields of biomass energy, and it was found a systematic negative trend in relation to the living space provided by lower planting space. The energy productivity achieved in the third year for all species, were higher than those of the first year. The species Eucalyptus grandis presented the greatest potential for energy productivity of wood and for the other species, equivalent to twice the Acacia mearnsii, the denser spacing (2.0x1.0m)

RESUMOEstudos relacionados à morfologia vegetal com espécies florestais nativas têm sido ampliados nos últimos anos, em face da sua importância sob os aspectos taxonômicos ou por serem de grande utilidade na identificação de frutos, sementes, plântulas e mudas, em laboratórios de análises de sementes, em viveiros de produção de mudas ou em estudos que avaliem a regeneração natural em ecossistemas florestais. Porém, diante da grande diversidade de espécies, ainda não é possível encontrar informações suficientes para subsidiar tais estudos e nem coleções em herbários para um grande número de espécies nativas. Assim, este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de caracterizar morfologicamente frutos, sementes, plântulas e mudas de pau-brasil (Caesalpinia echinata Lam.) – Fabaceae, Subfamília Caesalpinioideae. Foram realizadas, inicialmente, avaliações das características morfométricas e morfológicas externas e internas dos frutos e sementes. Em seguida, foram realizadas descrições do desenvolvimento inicial de plântulas e mudas. Considerando-se as análises descritivas da espécie, as informações de frutos, sementes, plântulas e mudas podem ser empregadas com segurança em trabalhos de identificação das espécies, tanto em trabalhos de laboratórios e viveiros quanto em estudos de campo sobre a ecologia dessa espécie. Especial atenção pode ser dada ao fruto legume seco, ao embrião, à germinação epígea fanerocotiledonar e à presença de acúleos nas fases jovens (plântulas e mudas), que são importantes para a identificação da espécie. Os caracteres que são comuns a outras espécies de Fabaceae, da Subfamília Caesalpinioideae, corroboram o caráter taxonômico dos aspectos morfológicos.

We compared the goodness of fit and efficiency of models for germination. Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) were performed with a randomized component corresponding to the percentage of germination for a normal distribution or to the number of germinated seeds for a binomial distribution. Lower levels of Akaikes's Information Criterion (AIC) and Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC) combined, data adherence to simulated envelopes of normal plots and corrected confidence intervals for the means guaranteed the binomial model a better fit, justifying the importance of GLMs with binomial distribution. Some authors criticize the inappropriate use of analysis of variance (ANOVA) for discrete data such as copaiba oil, but we noted that all model assumptions were met, even though the species had dormant seeds with irregular germination. Success in growing forest species, such as sage (Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia Benth), depends essentially on the use of good quality seedlings. At this stage of production, several materials have potential for use, mainly, organic waste. However, there is little information about the potential for the use of these residues in the production of seedlings. In view of the above, the objective was to evaluate the initial development of sapiens' seedlings due to the use of organic substrates. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse belonging to the Soil Science Department (SSD) of the Federal University of Ceará, Fortaleza, Ceará. The experimental design was completely randomized with four treatments, as follows: bovine manure + sand (BM), goat manure + sand (GM), rabbit manure + sand (RM), all in a ratio of 1: 1, and control the sand base (S) with six replicates. At 84 days after sowing the plants were collected for the determination of the following variables: leaf number (LN), plant height (PH), stem diameter (SD), root length (RL), shoot dry mass (SDM) and root dry mass (RDM). With the exception of the RL variable, all variables were significantly influenced by the use of the substrates. LN showed higher averages when grown in goat or bovine manure. In relation to PH and SD, LN-like behavior was observed, however, for SD, rabbit manure was statistically similar to bovine and goat. Thus, sage seedlings can be produced on a substrate basis of bovine and goat manure in a mixture with sand in a ratio of 1: 1. The study was conducted on the Água Turva Stream bank, in the Hydrographic Microbasin of the Jirau Alto River, in Dois Vizinhos county, Paraná state, aiming to evaluate the environmental impacts of the urban occupations and agricultural activities on the floristic composition and the phytosociological structure of the arboreal stratum of the riparian forest, to obtain information on species diversity and biological invasion, which will enable the establishment of future forest restoration programs. The data collect was realized in ten sample points demarcated along the stream, where 20 sample plots of 10.0 x 10.0 m (100.0 m2) were demarcated, 10 in each stream margin. The species were identified and evaluated regarding the following variables: the CAP (Circumference at Breast Height) and total height of all the trees with CAP = 15.0 cm (DBH = 4.8 cm). The vegetation structure was analyzed based on the phytosociological estimators and the indexes of diversity, equability and environmental impact index of exotic species. It was concluded that the riparian forest of the Água Turva creek is quite impacted, both in the rural and urban areas, with invasion of exotic species, mainly Hovenia dulcis (japanese grape) and Musa sp. RESUMO O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar o efeito da vermicompostagem de resíduos de carne e esterco bovino no desenvolvimento de mudas de eucalipto e pinus. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com oito tratamentos, sendo quatro elaborados a partir da adição de 0%, 20%, 40% e 60% de esterco bovino ao resíduo de carne, ambos vermicompostados, e quatro constituídos pela adição de 0%, 20%, 40% e 60% de vermicomposto ao substrato comercial, com sete repetições. Foram avaliados a altura das mudas, o diâmetro do colo, a massa seca da parte aérea e radicular, a área superficial específica, o índice de qualidade de Dickson e a relação entre a altura da muda e o diâmetro do colo. A adição ao substrato comercial de 20% e 40% de vermicomposto proporciona desenvolvimento e qualidade de mudas de eucalipto equivalentes ao alcançado com a utilização de 100% de substrato comercial. As mudas de pinus não são favorecidas pelas proporções de vermicomposto testadas.

http://dx.doi.org/10.5902/1980509815730A contaminação do solo com cobre tem se tornado comum em regiões de mineração e agrícolas pelo uso de fungicidas a base de cobre e aplicação de dejeto líquido de suíno ao solo, causando redução na produtividade das plantas. O trabalho objetivou determinar o efeito de doses de cobre no crescimento e qualidade de mudas de Barbatimão (Stryphnodendron polyphyllum Mart.) e Cássia (Cassia multijuga Rich.). O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado num fatorial (2 x 4), sendo as duas espécies florestais, e quatro doses de cobre: 0; 150; 300 e 450 mg kg-1, com 10 repetições. Avaliou-se a altura de planta, diâmetro do colo, peso da matéria seca radicular e da parte aérea, comprimento e área superficial específica radicular, e os índices de qualidade de mudas: relação entre altura da parte aérea e diâmetro do coleto; altura da parte aérea e peso da matéria seca da parte aérea e o Índice de Qualidade de Dickson. Os resultados demonstram que as doses de cobre testadas não influenciam a qualidade de mudas da Cássia enquanto o Barbatimão mantém a qualidade de mudas até 300 mg kg-1 de cobre adicionado ao solo. O Barbatimão apresenta maior crescimento e qualidade de mudas que a Cássia em solo contaminado com cobre.

http://dx.doi.org/10.5902/1980509815738By analyzing the trajectory of forest seed sector, it is widely known the relationship between the studies on native species and the Brazilian Forest Legislation. The Brazilian market for forest seed species is mostly informal and there are only a few species with laboratory tests registered in the Rules for Seed Testing (RAS). However, Law number 10,711, when ruling as to the marketing of seeds and seedlings, granted legal subsidies to promote the formalization of the forest seeds industry. Compliance with this law is conditioned to standardized laboratory methodologies for evaluating seed quality. For this reason, the formulation of a supplement or specific RAS for native forest seeds seems to be near. This fact will certainly consolidate the national seed industry sector. However, what were the paths that native forest seed science had to walk down to reach this standardization? What are the prospects for the future relating to the native forest seed sector? These are just some of the questions this work intends to answer, based on the perspectives of forestry and environmental organizations, such as the Seeds Networks.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a viabilidade do uso de lodo de esgoto como componente do substrato para produção de mudas de aroeira-pimenteira (Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi). Para tanto, foram testadas as seguintes proporções de lodo de esgoto/casca de arroz carbonizada, em tubetes com 50 cm³: 80/20, 70/30, 60/40, 50/50 e 40/60, as quais foram comparadas ao substrato comercial comumente usado em viveiro florestal. Foram avaliados a altura de planta, o diâmetro de colo e o acúmulo de matéria seca de parte aérea e raiz, bem como se procedeu à análise química do tecido vegetal de parte aérea e raiz. As mudas de Schinus terebinthifolius desenvolvidas em substrato com 40, 50 e 60% de lodo de esgoto apresentaram crescimento inferior ao da testemunha, entretanto, considerando os parâmetros relação altura da planta/diâmetro do colo, produção de matéria seca de parte aérea e raiz e aspectos nutricionais, que atestam a qualidade da muda, os resultados foram satisfatórios. Portanto, conclui-se que o uso do resíduo lodo de esgoto na composição de substratos para a produção de mudas de espécies florestais é uma alternativa promissora.

The link between the Academy and the intersectoral pact for Legal timber in Colombia and the various regional agreements, allows the incorporation of specific actions framed in research, training and social and community projection, which Foster to ensure that the wood that is extracted, leverages, transforms, transports, commercializes and uses in the country, comes from legal sources. While recognizing the importance of academic training for forestry and agroforestry professionals, the incorporation of educational institutions that offer technical, technological and professional programs to the Pact and regional agreements has been gradual. It is thus generated a way to confront the dynamics in the forestry sector, the identification of feasible scenarios for the search of productive alternatives in the wooded areas of the national territory under the optics of the legality, the recognition of potentials of development and conservation in the communities that live in and of the forest, accompanied by the training and academic processes that must be generated from the educational institutions. The Academy's commitments are framed in actions to disseminate and raise awareness in matters of forest legality, participation in initiatives that foster for the sustainability of the resource, and the carrying out of investigative actions and training of professionals and the community directly affected by traffic in forest species. O êxito de programas de reflorestamento pode ser ampliado por meio da aplicação do comportamento de espécies florestais a variáveis ambientais, como a luz. O objetivo deste estudo foi ampliar o conhecimento sobre a produção de mudas de Sclerolobium paniculatum Vogel, especificamente em relação ao nível de sombreamento. O estudo foi conduzido em viveiro de produção de mudas na Embrapa Amazônia Oriental, em Belém, Estado do Pará. Plântulas de S. paniculatum foram distribuídas sob telas pretas de polipropileno, ajustadas para proporcionar os seguintes níveis de sombreamento: 25%, 50% e 75% de interceptação de luz solar. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado com cinco repetições e três níveis de sombreamento e quatro épocas de avaliação (testemunha + três avaliações), realizadas em intervalos de 20 dias. Foram medidos diversos parâmetros de crescimento (altura, diâmetro e matéria seca das raízes, caule e folhas) e calculados indicadores de qualidade das mudas como a razão entre a altura da planta e o diâmetro do coleto (AP/DC); comprimento caulinar específico (CCE); razão de massa de folha (RMF); razão de massa do caule (RMC); razão de massa de raiz (RMR) e índice de qualidade de Dickson (IQD). É possível produzir mudas de Sclerolobium paniculatum Vogel sob diferentes níveis de sombreamento (25%, 50% e 75%), porém, os índices de qualidade indicaram que as mudas são mais vigorosas quando cultivadas sob 50% de sombreamento. The success of reforestation programs can be extended by applying the knowledge of the forest species behavior to environmental variables such as light. The aim of this study was to increase knowledge about the production of Sclerolobium paniculatum Vogel seedlings, specifically in relation to the shading level. The study was conducted in a seedling nursery at Embrapa Eastern Amazon, Belém, state of Pará. Seedlings of S. paniculatum were distributed under black polypropylene screens adjusted to provide the following shade levels: 25%, 50% and 75% of sunlight interception. The experimental design was completely randomized with five replications and three shading levels and four assessment times (control + three assessments), every 20 days. We measured several parameters of growth (height, diameter and dry matter of roots, stems and leaves) and calculated indicators of quality seedlings as the ratio between plant height and stem diameter (AP/DC); specific stem length (CCE); leaf mass ratio (RMF); stem weight ratio (RMC); reason of root mass (RMR) and Dickson quality index (IQD). It is possible to produce Sclerolobium paniculatum Vogel seedlings under different shading levels (25%, 50% and 75%), however, the quality index values indicated that the seedlings are more vigorous when grown under 50% shade.

A produção de mudas florestais, seja com finalidade econômica ou conservacionista, depende de conhecimentos relacionados ao crescimento e desenvolvimento vegetal. O estudo de uma planta em diferentes condições ambientais permite definir e aprimorar formas de cultivos mais adequadas. No trabalho, objetivou-se avaliar o crescimento de mudas de Dalbergia nigra (jacarandá caviúna) e Chorisia speciosa (paineira) cultivadas em casas de vegetação sob diferentes níveis de sombreamento, com o intuito de determinar o sombreamento mais adequado ao crescimento e relacionar suas respostas ao contexto ecológico. As sementes das espécies foram germinadas e cultivadas em casas de vegetação nas condições de 0, 22, 50, 70, 84 e 91 % de sombreamento. As variáveis analisadas foram altura de plantas, diâmetro do colo, área foliar total e a relação altura/diâmetro, sendo coletados os dados aos 30, 60, 90 e 180 dias após a emergência. As mudas de jacarandá caviúna tiveram maior altura, diâmetro do colo e área foliar nos tratamentos com sombreamento intermediários (50%, 70% e 84% de sombra) e apresentou características de espécies tolerantes a sombra e de estágios mais avançados de sucessão, se aproximando de espécies secundárias tardias a clímax. Por outro lado, as mudas de paineira apresentaram melhor crescimento no tratamento sem sombra (0%) e nos tratamentos com sombreamentos leves (20 e 50%), com características de espécies heliófitas em etapas iniciais de sucessão e aproximando-se de plantas pioneiras a secundárias iniciais.

http://dx.doi.org/10.5902/1980509810543This study aimed to determine the nutrient pool in monospecific and mixed stands of Eucalyptus urograndis and Acacia mearnsii in a consortium with Zea mays.The amount determination of nutrients of forest species was carried out in the treatments: 100E (100% of eucalyptus); 100A (100% of black wattle) and 50E:50A (50% of eucalyptus + 50% of black-wattle). On the other hand, for corn, it was carried out in all treatments (100E; 100A, 50E:50A; 75E:25A – 75% of eucalyptus + 25% black-wattle and 25E:75A – 25% of eucalyptus + 75% of black wattle). The delimitation adopted was the one of a randomized block with three replications. The magnitude of the nutrient pool in the agrossilvicultural systems biomass was: N> K > Ca > Mg > P > S, for macronutrients, and Mn > Fe > Zn > B > Cu, for micronutrients. Due to the great export of nutrients through the corn harvest, residues should be kept and it is necessary to make a nutritional reposition, mainly with P, N, K, S and Zn in the following crops, because of the higher amount that are exported with the extraction of the corn tang, which reaches 75.3; 60.6; 59.9; 55.8 e 53.8%, respectively, in relation to the total stocked in the biomass.

Nas últimas décadas, tecnologias alternativas vêm sendo estudadas visando tornar o cultivo do eucalipto (Eucalyptus sp.) mais econômico e sustentável. Entre estas, as associações micorrízicas merecem destaque devido aos inúmeros benefícios que proporcionam às plantas hospedeiras. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a ocorrência e atividade de fungos micorrízicos arbusculares em plantios de eucalipto utilizados comercialmente pela Copener Florestal Ltda. no litoral norte da Bahia. Foi observada grande variabilidade na densidade de esporos (36,2 a 203,2 esporos em 50 g de solo), colonização micorrízica (10,6 a 57,8%) e nos teores de glomalina facilmente extraível e total (0,34 a 1,92 mg g de solo-1 e 0,48 a 3,88 mg g de solo-1) nos plantios de eucalipto. Os resultados neste estudo permitiram concluir que, embora os clones apresentem suscetibilidade à micorrização em condições de campo, variações nas características do solo afetam aspectos ecológicos dos fungos micorrízicos arbusculares nos plantios de eucalipto da Copener Florestal Ltda. no litoral norte da Bahia.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a qualidade fisiológica de lotes de sementes de Jacaranda micranta Cham., pelo teste de condutividade elétrica. Foram utilizados três lotes de sementes, armazenados por diferentes períodos. O teste de condutividade elétrica foi realizado em diferentes quantidades de sementes e água deionizada para embebição, sendo depois associados a dados de germinação e vigor. Foi observado que quanto maior o tempo de armazenamento das sementes, maior seu valor de condutividade elétrica e, consequentemente, menor seu vigor de germinação. Verificou-se também que as diferentes quantidades de sementes e de volume de água na embebição não apresentam diferença significativa. Assim, recomenda-se a utilização de 50 sementes em 75 mL de água deionizada.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo verificar a variação do poder calorífico superior (PCS) ao longo do fuste das espécies florestais Acacia mearnsii De Wild, Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill, Mimosa scabrella Benth. e Ateleia glazioveana Baill e também avaliar o número e as posições das amostras ao longo do fuste para a estimativa do PCS dessas espécies. Para tanto, foram retirados discos de aproximadamente dois centímetros de espessura, ao longo de 0 %, 25 %, 50 % e 75 % da altura total de árvores com um ano de idade para determinação do PCS em bomba calorimétrica (C5000, IKA WORKS). Para Eucalyptus grandis e Ateleia glazioveana, é possível estimar o PCS a partir de um disco, respectivamente, nas posições 50% e 0% da altura total, para Mimosa scabrella em dois discos, nas posições 0+75% e para Acacia mearnsii em três discos, nas posições 0+25+75% da altura total.This research had the objective of studing the variation of the calorific power along the shaft of the species forest Acacia mearnsii de Wild, Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill, Mimosa scabrella Benth. and Ateleia glazioveana Baill and also to evaluate the number and the positions of the samples along the shaft for the estimate of calorific power of these species. For so much, they were solitary disks of approximately two centimeters of thickness, along 0%, 25%, 50% and 75% of the total height of trees, with a year of age, for determination of the power calorific superior in calorimeter (C5000, IKA WORKS). For the Eucalyptus grandis and the Ateleia glazioveana it is possible to esteem the power calorific superior starting from a disk, respectively in the positions 50% and 0%, and for the Mimosa scabrella with two disks, in the positions 0+75% and for the Acacia mearnsii, three disks, in the positions 0+25+75%.

http://dx.doi.org/10.5902/198050986620O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar a metodologia mais adequada para superação de dormência das sementes de Parkia gigantocarpa Ducke e produção de mudas. As sementes foram submetidas aos seguintes tratamentos: imersão em água fervente à temperatura de 100 ºC, por 10 minutos; escarificação ácida, com imersão em ácido sulfúrico (H2SO4) a 98 %, por 5, 10, 20, 30 e 40 minutos; escarificação mecânica, com abrasão em lixa nº 80 por 15 segundos, e testemunha (sem tratamento). Também foi realizada a avaliação da qualidade das mudas através da massa seca das raízes primárias. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com oito métodos de superação de dormência. Levando-se em consideração todos os parâmetros avaliados, os resultados indicaram que a escarificação ácida por 30 e 40 minutos foram os métodos mais eficientes para a superação da dormência das sementes de Parkia gigantocarpa, proporcionando maior vigor na germinação e maiores médias de massa seca para as raízes primárias.

Sterculia striata A. St. Hil. & Naudin. is a native species that is used in reforestation and urban forestry. Displays hard seeds, consisting of problem for the nursery, since their hard seed coats and waterproof hinder and delay germination. This study aimed to determine the effect of pre-germinative treatments in the process of germination of Sterculia striata. The seeds were subjected to six treatments: control – intact seeds (T1), mechanical scarification with sandpaper. 80 opposite the micropylar (T2) with sulfuric acid concentrated by 15, 45 and 60 minutes (T3, T4 and T5 respectively) scarification and then immersion in water for 24 hours (T6). The characteristics evaluated were: seedling emergence, emergency first count, speed of emergence, as well as length and dry mass of shoot and root of seedlings. The scarification with sandpaper number 80 on the opposite side of micropylar favors the percentage of seedlings in the first count, and recommended rapid and uniform emergence of seeds of Sterculia striata.Sterculia striata A. St. Hil. & Naudin. é uma espécie nativa que é utilizada em reflorestamentos e na arborização urbana. Apresenta sementes duras, consistindo em problema para os viveiristas, uma vez que seus tegumentos duros e impermeáveis à água dificultam e retardam a germinação. O presente estudo teve como finalidade determinar o efeito de tratamentos pré-germinativos no processo de germinação de sementes de Sterculia striata. As sementes foram submetidas a seis tratamentos: testemunha – sementes intactas (T1), escarificação com lixa n. 80 no lado oposto à micrópila (T2), escarificação com ácido sulfúrico concentrado por 15, 45 e 60 minutos (T3, T4, e T5, respectivamente) e escarificação com lixa seguida de imersão em água por 24 horas (T6). As características avaliadas foram: emergência de plântulas, primeira contagem de emergência, índice de velocidade de emergência, bem como comprimento e massa seca da parte aérea e raiz das plântulas. O tratamento de escarificação com lixa nº 80 no lado oposto a micrópila favorece a porcentagem de plântulas na primeira contagem, sendo recomendado para acelerar e uniformizar a emergência de sementes de Sterculia striata.

Inúmeros trabalhos descrevem tanto o aspecto fisionômico e florístico do cerradão, no entanto, não há padronização do critério de inclusão, esforço amostral e tamanho das unidades amostrais o que dificulta as comparações e emergência de perfil estrutural para a vegetação lenhosa desta fitofisionomia. Buscamos com este trabalho descrever o perfil florístico-estrutural do componente lenhoso do cerradão, bem como avaliar o grau de sobreposição de espécies florestais, savânicas e generalistas. O trabalho foi realizado em seis áreas distribuídas nos estados de: MG, MS, MT, TO, PI e DF. A vegetação lenhosa do cerradão não apresentou estrutura homogênea ou consistência florística, apresentando-se como fisionomia bastante heterogênea. Estruturalmente a vegetação lenhosa apresentou grandes variações, com formações mais abertas e mais densas (densidade variando de 652 a 1.732 ind. ha-1 e área basal variando de 12,83 a 22,45 m² ha-1). A riqueza de espécies nas áreas vaiou de 49 (MS) a 124 (MT). Das 308 espécies registradas nas seis áreas apenas seis ocorreram em todas elas e 184 espécies foram exclusivas de uma das áreas. Florísticamente houve grande variação na composição de espécies e marcada dissimilaridade entre as áreas. Apesar de haver uma mistura de elementos florísticos savânicos e florestais, detectamos maior domínio de espécies savânicas com exceção da área MT que apresentou maior proporção de espécies florestais. O padrão geral de dissimilaridade florística e estrutural nas seis áreas indicaram grande heterogeneidade da distribuição da flora lenhosa do cerradão, seguindo o padrão de outras fitofisionomias do bioma Cerrado.A large number of studies describes the structure and composition of cerradão, however there is no standardization regarding data collection, rendering it difficult to conduct ample comparisons and the emergence of a structural and floristic profile for the cerradão. Our aim is to establish a structural-floristic profile of the cerradão woody component and verify the overlap of forest, savanna and generalist species. We conducted the vegetation survey in sites in six states: DF, MG, MS, MT, PI and TO. The cerradão did not present a homogenous structure or floristic consistency among sites, presenting itself as a heterogeneous phytophysiognomy. Structurally it presented great variations, with both open and closed formations (density 652-1732 ind. ha-1; basal area 12.83-22.45 m² ha-1). Species richness varied from 49 (MS) to 129 (MT). Floristical variation and dissimilarity was strong among the six sites with only six species occurring in all sites, where as 184 species are exclusive to one site. Although species composition is comprised of a mixture of forest and savanna species, we detected a greater participation of savanna species, with the exception of the MT site that presented a larger proportion of forest species. The general floristic and structural dissimilarity pattern observed indicate a great heterogeneity of cerradão woody flora distribution following the general patter for the Cerrado biome.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a resposta das espécies arbóreas Schizolobium parahyba (Vell.) Blake (guapuruvu), Mimosa scabrella Benth. (bracatinga), Peltophorum dubium (Spr.) Taubert (canafístula), Parapiptadenia rigida (Benth.) Brenan (angico-vermelho) e o híbrido Eucalyptus urophylla S.T. Blake x Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex Maiden (eucalipto) em consórcio com a cana-de-açúcar (Saccharum spp.) em dois arranjos de sistemas agroflorestais (faixa - 3x3m + 12m e linha - 6x1,5m) submetidos a extremos climáticos de geada, na região Noroeste do Rio Grande do Sul. Os danos (resistência á geada) foram avaliados segundo o sistema de notas utilizado por HIGA et al. (2000) no qual atribuiu-se uma nota de 0 a 10 conforme a intensidade do dano na planta. Para os graus de resistência à geada, adaptou-se metodologia utilizada por CARVALHO (1981), a qual também é em função da intensidade do dano na planta. Diante da condição de geada estudada, observa-se que os diferentes arranjos de sistemas agroflorestais afetam a resistência da espécie guapuruvu, sendo sensível no sistema agroflorestal faixa e moderadamente tolerante no sistema linha. Em ambos os sistemas, as espécies angico-vermelho, bracatinga e eucalipto mostram-se resistentes, enquanto que a canafístula demonstra ser tolerante.The present research had the aim to evaluate the answers of the arboreal species Schizolobium parahyba (Vell.) Blake (guapuruvu), Mimosa scabrella Benth. (bracatinga), Peltophorum dubium (Spr.) Taubert (canafístula), Parapiptadenia rigida (Benth.) Brenan (angico-vermelho) and the hybrid Eucalyptus urophylla S.T. Blake x Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex Maiden (eucalipto) in consortium with sugar cane (Saccharum spp.) in two agroforestry arrangement systems (strip - 3x3m + 12m and line - 6x1,5m) submitted to climatic extreme frost conditions, in the Northwest of Rio Grande do Sul. The damages (resistance to frost) were appraised according to the system of notes used by HIGA et al. (2000) in which a note from 0 to 10 was attributed according to the intensity of the damage to the plant. For the resistance degrees to frost, it was adapted the methodology used by CARVALHO (1981), which is also in function of the intensity of the damage to the plant. Upon the frost condition studied, it was observed that the results demonstrated that different of agroforest system arrangements damaged the resistance of the guapuruvu specie, being sensitive in the agroforest system strip and moderatelly tolerant in the system line. In both systems, the species angico-vermelho, bracatinga e eucalipto showed resistance, while the canafístula demonstrated to be tolerant.

A ocorrência de geada, dependendo do grau de dano, pode se tornar um fator limitante para a condução de florestas de curta rotação. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o comportamento após ocorrências de geadas das espécies florestais Acacia mearnsii De Wild, Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, Mimosa scabrella Benth e Ateleia glazioveana Baill submetidas a níveis de espaçamento de 2,0x1,0m; 2,0x1,5m; 3,0x1,0 e 3,0x1,5m um ano após o plantio, na região Norte do Rio Grande do Sul. Os danos (resistência a geada) foram avaliados segundo o sistema de notas de 0 a 10, conforme a intensidade do dano na planta. Os graus de resistência à geada foram determinados em função da intensidade do dano na planta. Os níveis de espaçamento estudados não afetaram respostas das espécies em relação ao dano ocasionado por geada. A espécie Mimosa scabrella apresentou ser resistente, enquanto que Eucalyptus grandis e Ateleia glazioveana, tolerantes. Já a Acacia mearnsii apresentou ser moderadamente tolerante a tolerante.The frost occurrence depending on the damage degree, can become a limit factor for the transport of forests of short rotation. The present research has as objective evaluate the behavior after occurrences of frosts of the species forest Acacia mearnsii De Wild, Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, Mimosa scabrella Benth and Ateleia glazioveana Baill were submitted to levels of spacing of 2.0 x 1.0m; 2.0x1.5m; 3.0x1.0m and 3.0x1.5m one year after the planting, in the North of Rio Grande do Sul. The damages (resistance to frost) were appraised according to scale 0 to 10 according to the intensity of the damage in the plant. The frost resistance degrees were certain in function of the intensity of the damage in the plant. The spacing levels studied didn't affect the species answers in relation to the damage caused by frost. The species Mimosa scabrella presented to be resistant, while Eucalyptus grandis and Ateleia glazioveana tolerant. Already the Acacia mearnsii was moderately tolerant to tolerant.

Copper contamination has become common in areas of mining and grape culture in Rio Grande do Sul. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the dose of copper on growth and seedling quality of acoita-cavalo and aroeira-vermelha. The experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial scheme (2 x 5), using two forestry species and five copper doses: 0, 64, 128, 192 and 256 mg kg-1 of soil, with five replications. Plant height, collar diameter, dry mass weight of root system and shoot, length and surface specific area of root system and index of seedlings quality were evaluated and relation between shoot height and haste diameter, shoot height and shoot dry mass weight and Dickson quality index were assessed. The results showed that the copper doses tested did not change the quality of aroeira-vermelha seedlings but acoita-cavalo displayed better quality with the application of 64 mg kg-1 Cu. Copper primarily affected the acoita cavalo and aroeira-vermelha root system. Aroeira vermelha was more tolerant to copper toxicity than acoita-cavalo and displayed better quality at higher copper doses.

The objectives of this work were to analyze seed behaviour under controlled deterioration and estimate viability equations for forest species Eucalyptus grandis and Pinus taeda. Desired moisture content levels were achieved from initial values after either rehydration over water or drying over silica gel, both at 25 ºC. Seed sub samples with 8 moisture contents each for E. grandis (1.2 to 18.1%, initial value of 11.3%) and P. taeda (1.5 to 19.5%, initial value of 12.9%) were sealed in laminate aluminium-foil packets and stored in incubators maintained at 40, 50 and 65 ºC. The seeds from these species exhibited true orthodox and sub-orthodox storage behaviour, respectively, however E. grandis showed higher seed storability, probably due to a different seed chemical composition. Lowest moisture content limits estimated for application of the viability equations at 65 ºC were 4.9 and 4.1 mc for E. grandis and P. taeda, on equilibrium with ±20% RH. The viability equation estimated quantified the response of seed longevity to storage environment well with K E = 9.661 and 8.838; C W = 6.467 and 5.981; C H = 0.03498 and 0.10340; C Q = 0.0002330 and 0.0005476, for E. grandis and P. taeda, respectively.
