One of the most common environmental impacts that has caused irreversible effects on ecosystems is the introduction of exotic species. In addition to the ecological disasters that can be caused, such as the decline and extinction of native species, this phenomenon can generate significant economic losses and the possibility of the spread of parasites that are transmitted by these exotic species. These processes can be accentuated by climate change, which over time alters the global distribution pattern of the affected species, generating cases of niche overlap with species that share similar niches. In this sense, the knowledge about the areas with possible occurrence these species can direct the monitoring and control measures. In this study, we developed current and future prediction models to identify areas of suitability in the Neotropics for Melanoides tuberculata (Müller, 1774) and nine species of mollusks native to the American continent using the ecological niche modeling tool. In addition, we evaluated the ecological niche overlap between the invasive species and the native species of freshwater mollusks to verify whether the effects of climate change would alter the distribution of these organisms. The following methodological procedures were adopted to prepare the forecasting models: records of occurrence of the mollusks in different databases and search of environmental data for climate conditions in current and future scenarios in WorldClim 2.0 (SSP2-4.5 and SSP2-8.5). Besides, modeling procedures using seven packages of R software, evaluation of the models using the true skill statistic (TSS) metric, construction of maps and quantification and overlapping of ecological niche of the species included in the analysis. The results indicated that several areas of the Neotropics are suitable for the occurrence of M. tuberculata in the current scenarios. Moreover, the suitable areas for its occurrence will probably be expanded in both future scenarios. For native species, there were significant differences in relation to the areas of suitability, with a reduction for some species. Niche similarity tests indicated significant overlap only between M. tuberculata and the planorbid Biomphalaria straminea (Dunker, 1848). We discuss that the expansion of M. tuberculata can have negative consequences, including the reduction of native gastropod species and the spread of trematodes of medical and veterinary importance that this mollusk can transmit.

Background and aims: The European Ranunculus acris is an invasive species in the world, and has been reported for the Northeast and South of Argentina. However, its presence is not conclusive, and it is not mentioned in recent floras of the country. The objective of the work is to confirm the presence of the species R. acris in Argentina and its naturalization in Tierra del Fuego. In addition, it is proposed to analyze its morphology and its potential invasive behavior in the new environment. M&M: Herbarium specimens of R. acris and other species of the genus Ranunculus, and populations in its natural environment, in anthropized areas of the city of Ushuaia and surrounding areas, Tierra del Fuego, were studied. The morphology was comparatively analyzed and the taxonomic identity was established based on the type material, and previous descriptions and keys. To study the invasive potential of R. acris, an invasion risk matrix and specialized literature were used. Results: The presence of R. acris is confirmed for Argentina, expanding its range of distribution in the extreme south of the country, and it is recognized as naturalized in Tierra del Fuego. Based on the morphological analysis, glabrous receptacle, erect habit and deeply lobed leaves were identified as characters of taxonomic value. According to the analysis of the invasion risk matrix, it is established that R. acris has a high invasive potential. Conclusion: Ranunculus species for Tierra del Fuego increase by nine, two of them being exotic. The possibility of eliminating naturalized populations of R. acris in the extreme South of Argentina should be evaluated due to its high invasive potential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The energy use of forest biomass favors the lower consumption of fossil fuels. Thus, his study aimed to evaluate the physical-chemical and energetic characteristics of wood and charcoal of the Prosopis juliflora species. For this, logs in three different diametric classes were collected, and their density, moisture, chemical composition and energy quality were evaluated. In evaluating the characteristics of the material, a completely randomized experimental design was used, using the Tukey test (p ≤ 0.05). The basic density ranged from 0.60 to 0.74 g cm³. The initial moisture content was greater than 30%. Diametric classes 1 and 3 showed the highest values of ash in wood, 0.9% and 1.05%, respectively. As for charcoal yield, the values ranged from 34.31% to 38.19%. In general, Prosopis juliflora wood showed energetic potential for use in the red ceramic industries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The natural distribution of the Burrowing Parrot (Cyanoliseus pa-tagonus) includes savanna, steppe and grassland areas in Chile and Argentina. Here we report the first record of this species in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. On 14 September 2018, we observed around 60 individuals foraging on the ground in a commercial area of the city. Additionally, between February and October 2021 we recorded individuals of C. patagonus perched on trunks of the Mexican Fan Palm (Washingtonia robusta) and occupying cavities excavated in the trunks. According to the literature, C. patagonus naturally nests in cliffs, but is also able to use other plant and anthropogenic substrates for nesting. We recommend implementing a monitoring program to determine population dynamics of this species within the Tijuana urban area, as C. patagonus is a highly gregarious exotic species with strong potential to act as a reservoir for Herpesvirus and Chlamydia psittaci, which could have serious repercussions on public health.

Zaprionus indianus (fig fly) is a drosophilid of African origin that was recorded in Brazilian territory in 1999, quickly dispersing throughout the country, causing impacts on fig culture, and becoming one of the dominant Drosophilidae species in the Cerrado biome. Due to the fact it is an invasive species and a potential pest in fruit cultivars, it is essential to monitor the variations in the populations of this species aiming to verify its genetic and demographic structure and possible impacts on the drosophilid community. The demography and the genetic data obtained from the Est3 polymorphism of fig fly have been evaluated in six populations of Brazilian Cerrado sampled during the dry season. Multivariate analyses of PCA, UPGMA and landscape genetics were performed. The results have indicated variation in the demography of the sampled populations, the presence of two alleles (Est31 and Est34) in all of them, and a higher isolation degree of the Guaíra (SP) population. Thus, the fig fly is a colonizer of the Brazilian Cerrado, and the polymorphisms of Est3 locus are an appropriate genetic marker to investigate the bioinvasion process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Invasive species are a main cause of biodiversity loss, making it important to register their incursion into conserved, protected areas. We evaluated presence of the exotic Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia decaocto) in and around the Chamela-Cuixmala Biosphere Reserve, Jalisco, after hurricane disturbance. During March to May 2017 and 2018, we carried out 1 km transect surveys at three sites: Chamela Biological Station, Careyes town, and Cuixmala ranch, and conducted observations of the Eurasian Collared-Dove when detected. We also collected records from the eBird database to compare the number of Eurasian Collared-Doves reported before (2010-2015) and after (2016-2020) major hurricane disturbance. We recorded a total of 27 doves over 18 surveys, with the majority of records at the Chamela Biological Station within the reserve. Most sightings were of one dove, but we recorded a group of 4 doves at Chamela in May 2018. Doves spent significantly more time perched around buildings at Chamela in 2018 compared to 2017, and made occasional flights into trees at the dry forest border. The eBird data showed a significant increase in records of the Eurasian Collared-Dove outside the reserve after hurricane disturbance. Our results showed increased presence of the Eurasian Collared-Dove at sites within the biosphere reserve following major hurricane disturbance, possibly due to forest damage creating open-habitat and niche opportunities within the dry forest mosaic. We recommend continued monitoring to restrict establishment of this invasive species in forested areas of the reserve, and evaluate potential impacts on native species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Invasive exotic species impact native fauna adversely and are one of the leading causes of global biodiversity change. The domestic dog can be classified as an invasive species after its access to natural areas followed by their ability to survive independently of human intervention. In Brazil, the effects of dog predation and hunting on wildlife remains unclear. In this study, we report five wild-mammal predation events involving domestic dogs in fragments of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest (northern Paraná State, Brazil). Between June and September 2018, we found that specimens of Didelphis albiventris (white-eared opossum), Dasypus novemcinctus (nine-banded armadillo), Sapajus nigritus (black capuchin), and Eira barbara (tayra) were killed by domestic dogs in both urban and rural areas. Invasive domestic dogs can pose a risk to wildlife, especially to threatened species. We suggest that diversified measures be taken to impede and reduce the access of these animals to forest fragments. Furthermore, our findings indicate that control, containment, and eradication measures can reduce the negative effects of domestic dogs on wildlife.

Cloeon dipterum (L.) (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) is widely distributed in temperate areas of Eurasia, whereas, in North America, it is restricted to three states of the USA and Canada, and, in South America to Chile. To confirm our hypothesis that C. dipterum has been recently introduced in Argentina, the aim of the present study was to identify the species based on molecular analyses and morphological features. To this end, nymphs were collected from three artificial habitats located in different localities of Buenos Aires province and two tributary streams of the Luján River, northeast of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Nymphs were all identified as belonging to C. dipterum thus confirming the presence of the species in Argentina. The distribution of C. dipterum in Buenos Aires, together with its absence from previously sampled sites, would indicate that the individuals recorded are introduced and already well established in the study area. The flora of Cabrera Archipelago historically has received little scientific attention, due to its apparent little diversity and because it has been partly eclipsed by the important marine richness. In spite of this, the park's flora is quite rich, with c.500 species, with a high biogeographic interest (with endemic species to Cabrera, Gymnesians, thyerrenian area, and South-Eastern Iberian Peninsula) and also ecological interest (with unique ecological interactions). As for the alien and invasive plants, about 26 species, have been recorded, although it is necessary to periodically review their status. Currently, none of them represents an important ecological problem, being most of them restricted to the harbor area and military camp. In short, without practically anthropogenic disturbances, the flora of Cabrera National Park presents a good status of conservation, being an excellent outdoor laboratory to study how different species are adapting to the new conditions, both ecological and climatic.

Aim The largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides was introduced in more than 50 countries for the purpose of sport fishing. In Brazil, records date from 1922, and nowadays many populations are known to occur in the southern region. Here we investigated the reproductive biology of this species in a small reservoir in southern Brazil, to understand the role of the reproductive strategy in the invasion process and assist in its management. We conclude with suggestions for the management in local scale, as this species can bring relevant problems to the public supply through trophic cascade and other negative effects. Methods Samples were performed with different methods, between May 2011 and April 2012. All fishes were measured, and the reproductive season was determined through the relative frequency of reproductive stages and the gonadosomatic index. Sex ratio was calculated monthly and for each total length (TL) class and compared with the estimates presented in the literature. Total length at maturity (L50, length at which 50% of the individuals were mature) was estimated for females, males and the entire study population. Results A total of 565 individuals of M. salmoides were analyzed. Overall sex-ratio did not differ significantly. The monthly distribution of the gonadosomatic index for females and males showed higher values between August (late winter) and November 2011 (austral spring). -Binomial modelling of sex-ratio data of native (n=1) and introduced populations (n=7) showed a lower proportion of females in its native range. All individuals > 21.5 cm TL were mature (L95), and L50 was calculated at 18.7 cm TL. After the reproductive period, an increase in the abundance of young individuals (≤ 7.0 cm TL) was registered, corresponding to 50% of all individuals collected. The relative frequency of mature individuals and the variation in the gonadosomatic index indicate a prolonged spawning period during the austral spring, coinciding with the increase in temperature. Conclusions Results suggested that some changes in life history traits, such as the early sexual maturation and the long reproductive period, coupled with a remarkable adaptability, may have facilitated the establishment of M. salmoides populations in this reservoir. The illegal and intentional stocking by anglers plays a central role in the introduction and dispersal of M. salmoides in Brazil. We encourage studies on the sanitary quality of this fish for human consumption, so that massive campaigns of education the population to encourage capture and consumption are implemented by the competent authorities as a control measure in local scale, combined with targeted samplings with artificial baits during the reproductive period, identification, and removal of nests and fingerlings using electric fishing or trap nets during the recruitment period.

FISH farming , *NILE tilapia , *FISH growth , *DIET , *INTRODUCED species , *ANIMAL feeds - Abstract
Fish is a protein source with high economic value and fish farming is a viable alternative for many producers. Oreochromis niloticus (Nile tilapia) has a good development in intensive culture. Diet for breeding may comprise between 40 and 70% of total costs and fish growth is directly proportional to the established ration. Current study analyzes the performance of O. niloticus fry with fractionated diet during 60 days. Two hundred and twenty-five fry, mean weight 3.5 g and mean size 5.5 cm, sexually male inverted, were employed. Seventy-five fry were distributed in each experimental unit (10m3), with three treatments and three different feed frequencies: one daily feed comprising 5% of live weight; two daily feeds comprising 5% of live weight; three daily feeds comprising 5% of live weight. Amount of diet was the same, albeit fractionated. All treatment had the same extruded commercial diet. Results after 60 days showed no significant differences between treatments for the growth of tilapia fry with fractionated diet (p > 0.05). The producer will have satisfactory results with a single diet when compared to feed distributed up to three times a day. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

caramujo-gigante-africano ,saúde pública ,Waste Management and Disposal ,espécie exótica - Abstract
