This article addresses the need to adopt an intersectional perspective when discussing sexual harassment and violence in academia. The introduction of an intersectional perspective is important since sexual harassment and violence in relation to racial and ethnic minorities seldom revolve exclusively around gender. Recognising the intersectional nature of sexual assault and harassment means also recognising the coexistence of racism and nationalism, the perpetuation of ethnic/racial stereotypes, the multifaceted manifestations of discrimination, and a matrix of domination that exists in our society and educational and research institutions as well. In this article, we analysed official documents of Slovenian higher education and research institutions (public and private ones) with an aim to examine whether and how they address intersectionality and racial/ethnic minorities in their policies combating sexual harassment and violence. The results revealed a significant ignorance towards intersectionality of gender and ethnicity, but also issues arising from accessibility of these policies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

9. What about racial groups and boundaries (and race and racism)?

- Abstract
This article begins by discussing the major theoretical contributions of Barth's "Introduction" to Ethnic Groups and Boundaries and of a later essay he wrote on "Enduring and Emerging Issues in the Analysis of Ethnicity" (1994), which assessed the significance of his edited book. Among the principal contributions of Barth discussed are the greater sociological concern with ethnicity beginning in the 1970s, his emphasis on what "the actors themselves regard as significant," which contributed to the understanding of the social construction of ethnicity and race, and his argument that ethnic groups organise interactions between people, which led to the view of ethnicity (and race) as an organising principle of social relations. Also reviewed are the primary shortcomings of Barth's essays, including not mentioning the significance of race and racism and how race, rather than ethnicity, is the dominant principle of social organisation in many societies and thus serves as a boundary among groups. - Abstract
The subject of this paper is the ambiguity of the conceptualisation of ethnicity. Can it fruitfully be regarded as a relational property of any social system, or should the concept rather be confined to a specific kind of historical society, notably those defined as modern societies? In exploring this question, the author draws on selected theoretical and meta-theoretical contributions to the analysis of ethnicity, beginning with Fredrik Barth's 'Introduction' to his edited volume, Ethnic Groups and Boundaries. - Abstract
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the publication of Ethnic Groups and Boundaries: The Social Organization of Culture Difference (ed. F. Barth 1969), the authors have taken the opportunity to pursue a critical revision of the reasons that have led to the great success of this work, which has played a key role in ethnicity studies within social anthropology and beyond the discipline. First, they look back at the time period when Ethnic Groups and Boundaries originated and asses the book in this historical context. This leads them to several unexpected findings: Firstly, despite the fact that Barth's "Introduction" to the volume has become nearly iconic in ethnicity studies in the last 50 years, the term "ethnicity" itself does not occur there at all. It is also surprising that scholars and researchers of the period did not consider Ethnic Groups and Boundaries to be a groundbreaking book. Apart from this, the acceptance of the book was, particularly in the U.S., delayed and only gradual. The view of Barth's publication through the eyes of his contemporaries thus does not correspond to the interpretation of its impact and significance that is widely held today. These facts led to a conclusion: If we insist on the fact that Ethnic Groups and Boundaries is a key and ground-breaking contribution to ethnicity studies within social anthropology (and beyond), it is necessary to reassess the arguments that support this thesis. 12. Ethnic indifference - Fredrik Barth's conceptual blind spot.

- Abstract
It has been already pointed out by some of the earlier critics that Fredrik Barth in his seminal "Introduction" to Ethnic Groups and Boundaries (1969) defined ethnicity in an ahistorical way as a universal phenomenon intrinsic not only to some societies or historical periods but to mankind in general. Simultaneously Barth understands ethnic identity as a basic and dominant identity, to which other types of identity are subordinated. In this conceptual frame, ethnically indifferent groups, i.e., the groups in which the us-them dichotomisation does not proceed on the ethnic level, and whose members think and act primarily in non-ethnic terms and their identity repertoire lacks ethnic identification, find themselves in a kind of conceptual blind spot. This article deals with relationships of two ethnically indifferent groups in the territory of Bulgaria in the first half of the twentieth century. This historical case study serves both as a kind of development and criticism of Barth's approach and an elaboration of the concept of ethnic indifference. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Magistrsko delo analizira percepcijo Slovanov in diskurz slovanskega etnonima v grških in latinskih narativnih virih do leta 626 ter se pri tem sprašuje, kaj so si poznoantični in zgodnjesrednjeveški pisci predstavljali pod oznako »Slovani«. Kdo so bili ti ljudje? This master’s thesis analyses the perception of the Slavs and the discourse of the Slavic ethnonym in Greek and Latin narrative sources up to 626. It asks what late antique and early medieval writers imagined under the term “Slavs.” Who were these people? Did the content of the ethnonym change over time? If so, what did it describe, and how did it come about? We found that the label did change its meaning and was conditioned by the specific context of each author. In the narrative sources of the sixth and early seventh centuries, the ethnonym “Slav” primarily referred to (1) culturally similar communities that inhabited the Wallachian Plain and (2) non-equestrian and “non-Avar” communities living under the Avar rule. The first meaning, which had a cultural dimension, was mainly acquired in the Justinianic era and can already be found in the works of Procopius of Caesarea. The second, which had a political connotation, was introduced with the arrival of the Avars in the Pannonian Plain, which led to a perceptual homogenisation on the part of outside observers. In both cases, the ethnonym had a pragmatic function: it helped deal with political contingency and made it easier for outside observers to make sense of the complex ethnic geography of areas beyond Roman influence. Because of rapid ethnopolitical changes, it quickly became to be used in a similar manner as the generic term “Huns” used in Greek sources to refer to steppe peoples, and as such, spread to the Latin West at the turn of the sixth to seventh centuries. Some individuals along the lower Danube definitely identified themselves with the ethnonym “Slavs,” however, it remains an open question as to what extent.

The Kurdish ethnic group is the largest ethnic group in the world, which to this day remains without its own country. The population is scattered among four countries: Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria, where they are recognized as a minority or have occupied an autonomous territory (Rojava in Syria and Kurdistan in Iraq). Due to political forces, economic reasons, cultural crossroads and a complex history of division, assimilation, migration, lost identities, persecution and even massacres and genocides, the Kurds are left without their own state of Kurdistan, promised to them in the 1920 Sèvres Peace Treaty.

Žene albanske, bošnjačke, romske i ostalih narodnosti, a donekle i žene srpske narodnosti imaju nepovoljniji socioekonomski položaj, a visoki natalitet imaju Romkinje i Albanke.

In the study conducted for my thesis, I tried to determine how students from former Yugoslav countries, who moved to Slovenia for different reasons, feel about their new social surroundings, especially the faculties of the University of Ljubljana that they are enrolled in, and how they fit in with their new educational and living environments. In the first part, I define migration, explain who migrants are and present how big of an obstacle the Slovenian language is for migrants coming to Slovenia. I also touch upon history, namely the period of former Yugoslavia. By employing different literature sources, I present the integration policy, explore the discrimination faced by foreigners and define the notion of ethics. As the focus is placed primarily on integration in the programs at the University of Ljubljana, I also present the institution’s operations and its process of enrolling foreign students. In the second part, I make use of questionnaires to study what the atmosphere is like at the faculties, how foreign students from former Yugoslav countries are accepted by their peers and faculty staff, who their friends are and who they turn to when they need help. Respondents also told me how satisfied they are with their selected faculty and what challenges they have to overcome when learning the Slovenian language, shedding light on both the positive and the negative aspects. In my thesis, I also present the results of qualitative research – my interviews with dozens of respondents, which were partially structured as standardized questionnaires. I have found that many years after the disintegration of Yugoslavia, young adults from former Yugoslav countries are still stigmatized and not well accepted by their peers, namely ethnic Slovenians enrolled in the studied faculties. They find solace in their peers from former Yugoslav countries, who they also spend most time with socializing. They also receive a lot of help from professors. Communication in the Slovenian language seems to be their biggest problem. They have also expressed satisfaction with the educational process and the contents studied at the selected faculties, and most of them feel accepted. The results of the research indicate that respondents mostly feel they could receive more support from their Slovenian peers when trying to integrate in the society and the faculties. They lack understanding and empathy for their situation, both on part of the professors and their peers. They feel deprivileged due to the grammatical errors in their speech, which also affects their willingness to practice the right to free speech and their experience thereof. Foreigners living in Slovenia are therefore exposed, but they do not mention people coming from former Yugoslavia, nor do they emphasize interpersonal relationships or attitudes of ethnic Slovenians towards the citizens of former Yugoslav countries. Social work should place more focus on the fear and feelings experienced by foreign students, who are discriminated in their schools or faculties. After all, the educational system is still contributing to the occurrence of such obstacles by not allowing discussions on the matter to unfold in classrooms. It is mandatory that people see these individuals exist. To deal with societal discrimination, community projects are required that would be focused on presenting different cultures, dealing away with prejudice and bringing foreigners and locals closer together. Social work could play an essential role in delivering such projects.

The purpose of the diploma thesis is to look for reasons and circumstances for the preservation of the French Basques' national identity. The principal research question seeks answers that would bring key creators of the Basque identity into focus. The diploma thesis is divided into three theoretical sections. The first section presents different concepts by several sociological theorists about the birth of the nation, nationalism, ethnic groups and language. The second part focuses on the geographical description and determination of the Spanish and French share of the Basque country with regard to the functioning of the Basque separatist and independentist organisations ETA and IK which performed an important role in the establishment of the Basque nationalism. The third part touches upon the protection of the national minorities in the European Union and the status of other minorities in France, considering the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities and the The European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. The aim of the thesis is to present the establishment of the Basque identity throughout the past and their present status in Europe.

Raziskava ugotavlja visoko stopnjo pragmatizma v odnosu do prehranjevanja, fatalizem nasproti spremembam in omejitvam, odsotnost nacionalističnih prvin v utemeljitvah kulinaričnih izbir in veliko mero strpnosti do vseh oblik morebitnih kulinaričnih drugačnosti.

The article derives from the experiences and dynamics of intercultural research work on the international project Children's Voices: Exploring Interethnic Violence and Children's Rights in the School Environment, led by the Science and Research Centre of the University of Primorska in 2011 and 2012. The project addressed various topics related to ethnicity and interethnic relations; however, the main issue addressed in the project was interethnic violence in the school environment. Motivated by several issues revealed during the empirical research process in five participating countries, we will expose some challenges in researching interethnic relations from an intercultural perspective. In so doing, we will focus on two dimensions defined as 'conceptual' and 'political'. The analysis of challenges in researching interethnic relations from an intercultural perspective is mainly based on a comparison of the five countries involved in the project (Slovenia, Austria, UK, Italy and Cyprus). Među hrvatskim iseljenicima i njihovim potomcima u Čileu i Južnoafričkoj Republici (JAR), u razdoblju nakon domovinskog rata i međunarodnog priznanja Republike Hrvatske proveli smo anketno istraživanje u cilju utvrđivanja postojanja/nepostojanja određenih oblika nacionalnog/etničkog identiteta.

Kako sicer pojasniti relativno visoko in skokovito povečanje migracijskega salda v »prvem« obdobju s splošnim nižanjem vrednosti celotne rodnosti v Sloveniji, ob hkratnem strmem upadanju in sovpadanju vrednosti celotne rodnosti in migracijskega salda?

In this article, I reflect on the changing valence of urban vernacular movement in contemporary Turkey as it lingers at the edge of Europe without formal membership. Drawing equally on dance theatre productions and politicised quotidian performances, I examine the frictive relationship between Islamic and secular culture entrepreneurs as well as the precarious, embodied articulations of difference in globalised lstanbul: the current Europea Capital of Culture. I investigate the overlapping aesthetic and socio-political ramification of intimate globalisation to expose the limits of Turkish multiculturalism on stage and of the street. My first larger objective is to trace ethnographically the use of mutual ethnic, sexual, and classed bodily distinctions in choreographing pluralism and producing new hierarchies under transnational sanctions and neoliberal investments. Second, I use this materialist dance ethnography to generate fresh interdisciplinary dialogue on entangle questions of social justice and artistic innovation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on various social constructions of the origin of the descendants of the Uskoki along the border between Slovenia and Croatia. It is to be noted that the change in the political status of the border between Slovenia and Croatia is significant because the change formed a specific understanding of previous and current border regimes. The non-Slovenian inhabitants of the border region discovered after the declaration of Slovenian independence in 1991 that they were descendants of the Uskoki.

The aim of the thesis is to present the position of Pakistanis in the United Kingdom through two important components: ethnicity (British, Pakistani) and religion (Islam), and the position of women (specifically Pakistani origin and Islamic religion). It is analyzed how religion, as an inseparable part of „Pakistani identity“, influences identity attitudes in certain generations. Areas are indicated that were predominantly inhabited by Pakistanis and their impact on the cultural landscape. End view of the changes in the position of Pakistanis in the United Kingdom after the Terrorist Attacks (9/11, 7/7) and growing Islamophobia.
