ARTIFICIAL hip joints , *TOTAL hip replacement , *HEMIARTHROPLASTY , *PATIENT compliance , *FEMUR head , *PATIENT satisfaction , *HIP fractures , *JOINT infections - Abstract
Hip replacement is a surgical procedure in which the hip joint is replaced by a prosthetic implant, that is, a hip prosthesis. A total hip replacement (total hip arthroplasty or THA) consists of replacing both the acetabulum and the femoral head while hemiarthroplasty generally only replaces the femoral head. Hip replacement is currently one of the most common orthopaedical operations, though patient satisfaction short- and long-term varies widely. In this paper we present the case of a 75-year-old woman, with classic uncemented hip prosthesis intervention, from the preoperative preparation stage to 1 year after the intervention and the recovery phases and their evolution. Due to a quality management of the intervention and good hygiene and nutrition, the lack of osteoporosis and the absence of paleopathology, the patient recovered in a fast and correct manner, returning to a good functionality and state of health. Also, the cooperation between the patient, family, therapist, doctor and psychologist had a decisive role in the success of both the intervention and the postoperative period with optimal results for the age and possibilities of the patient.

QUESTIONNAIRES - Abstract
Our study focuses on the field research methodology of customs based on the opinions of specialists that we analyzed using a critical approach. Additionally, we incorporated our own experience as field researchers over six decades. Initially, we examined established methods such as reconstruction, direct observation, interview, and investigation based on questionnaires. We then researched the specific elements that give customs the status of regional variants, including any unusual ones that express the richness of this genre in the investigated area. Our study also emphasizes the importance of filming and photographing customs for their preservation, as they are in a process of evolution and disappearance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

POSTVACCINAL encephalitis , *MULTIPLE sclerosis - Abstract
Summary. Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), is a inflammatory demyelinating disease probably partly autoimmune origin, has an acute or subacute onset and manifests with multifocal lesions of the central nervous system (CNS). In many cases it is necessary to make a differential diagnosis with multiple Sclerosis (MS), a chronic and progressive inflammatory disease of the CNS, which occurs in young adults aged between 20 and 40 years, but can occur in children with ADEM suspected. Aim of the study was evolutionary estimation of clinical characteristics specific to the first e of demyelination of ADEM to carry out determine the differential diagnosis with MS. Materials and methods. During 2010 - 2022 a retrospective study was conducted by analyzing the medicated records of 42 children and adolescents, including 19 girls and 23 boys, who suffered an acute CNS demyelinating disease as a first e with an abnormal data of brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The mean age of children with ADEM was 6 years and 8 months, and in MS was 14 years and 7 months. According to the definition proposed by the Pediatric MS Study Group regarding the studied pathologies the diagnosis of ADEM was confirmed 3 months after the onset of the first episod. For diagnostic accuracy MS patients were assigned a final diagnosis after long-term follow-up. Results. Of the 42 children who were confirmed 3 months after the first e of ADEM, only 3 cases (7%) manifested with the multifocal form of the disease. In evolution 18 children (43%) were diagnosed with ADEM and 24 (57%) with MS. The duration of follow-up was 6 years and 8 months in patients with the one course of ADEM and 5 years and 6 months in patients with relapses of the disease. Encephalopathy was registered in 13 (72%) of ADEM patients, while none of the MS patients had encephalopathy. At the first stage of the disease, immunological manifestations, i. e., oligoclonal bands in cerebrospinal fluid (41.7%) and increased immunoglobulin G index (75%), as well as imaging data, i. e., periventricular perpendicular ovoid lesions (58%), correlate with the MS outcome. Only a few clinical features differed between ADEM and MS at the first manifesting. The presence of encephalopathy at the onset of ADEM exclude the diagnosis of MS. We report the case of a 2.6-year-old girl initially diagnosed with ADEM. Conclusions. The clinical manifestations of ADEM can be recognized at the onset of the disease. Children manifesting a first demyelinating event should be evaluated with caution for known MS risk factors. It is necessary to consider that the first symptoms reflecting a demyelinating process of the nervous system may represent a first attack of MS. Such patients should be monitored for future relapses as well as considering early treatment in those at high risk of MS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The diversity of life on Earth is immense, with organisms colonizing even some of the most extreme habitats on the planet. Remarkably, despite such immense diversity within the biosphere, all living things are united by a set of commonalities that hint to a single shared ancestry of all life. That is, all cellular life on Earth as we know it descended from a single primordial entity known as the last universal common ancestor (LUCA). A central approach to understanding this evolutionary descent from LUCA and the diversification of life is to visualize the known biosphere within a schema that provides insight into evolutionary relationships. These connections can be organized into a tree-like network known as the “tree of life” (TOL), a radiating diagram assembled from branches and nodes that represent life’s evolutionary history from our microbial ancestors to now, with LUCA sitting at the root of this tree. The TOL can provide a foundation for asking pertinent questions about different periods in cellular history and the characteristics of major ancestors at turning points along this evolutionary road from the earliest stages of life to now, a journey that spans nearly 4.5 billion years. Modern versions of the TOL are constructed by analyzing changes in the DNA sequences of genes, and in recent decades, the quality and quantity of genomic data sampled from the environment has provided a valuable source of information that has uncovered new branches in the TOL representing newly discovered lineages. Retracing the major events in life’s evolution is challenging and requires careful and methodical inquiry. This thesis addresses unresolved key questions regarding deep cellular evolution from the earliest node in the tree of life representing LUCA, to the divergence and radiation of Archaea and Bacteria, endosymbioses contributing to eukaryogenesis, and the structure of the TOL. To this end, I applied diverse bioinformatics approaches including phylogenetics (single gen

- Abstract
The present thesis provides new data on the evolution and palaeoecology of brachyuran crabs during the Cretaceous, with the emphasis on the Mesozoic Marine Revolution. A guild-based analysis, based on a detailed study of functional morphology, contributes to a broader understanding of macroevolutionary patterns within this group of decapod crustaceans during the MMR. By examining the evolutionary and ecological roles of brachyuran crabs within Mesozoic marine ecosystems, the current research features new insights into the drivers of diversification and specialisation. Here, I address these new data and insights through exploration of the research questions proposed in Chapter 1 (Introduction), and by using the results and interpretations presented in Chapters 2–10. 1. Can the ecological guild concept constitute an effective framework for understanding evolutionary and ecological adaptations of brachyuran crabs during the Mesozoic? My research concludes that the ecological guild concept constitutes a valuable and robust framework for understanding evolutionary and ecological adaptations of brachyuran crabs. By categorising crabs into guilds based on functional roles within the marine ecosystem and morphological traits, a better understanding of how brachyuran crabs interacted with their environment may be gained. The guild approach has proved particularly useful in identifying adaptive strategies and ecological niches, offering insights into the drivers of diversification and specialisation. However, the present study also acknowledges that there are limitations, such as the potential for oversimplification and the challenge of accounting for intra-guild variability. Overall, the guild concept may serve as a useful tool for the study of extinct brachyuran crabs, contributing significantly to the broader understanding of Mesozoic marine ecosystems and macroevolutionary processes. 2. How did the evolution and diversification of Mesozoic brachyuran crabs correlate with

- Abstract
The conversion of plant biomass into biofuels, biochemicals, and other bioproducts holds great potential, with fungi being highly effective in breaking down complex carbohydrates into soluble sugars. In fungal plant biomass conversion (FPBC), sugar transporters (STs) are essential for absorbing sugars from enzymatic breakdown of polysaccharide for fungal growth. This thesis integrates bioinformatics methods and omics data to analyze the gene content and diversity of STs across fungal species, providing insights to optimize biomass conversion processes. The first chapter introduces the study, outlining the structure, mechanism, and distribution of STs in fungi, then summarizing the biochemical traits and functions of various STs. It highlights the diversity in ST function, affinity, and specificity. Chapter 2 presents a comparative analysis of genome diversity and transcriptome dynamics among four filamentous fungi: Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus nidulans, Penicillium subrubescens and Trichoderma reesei. Using a domain search with PFAM PF00083, 90, 83, 117, and 52 STs were predicted in each species, respectively, for a total of 342 STs classified into ten clades. The predicted ST specificity was inferred from the known STs in the same phylogenetic clades. Comparative transcriptomics on different sugars revealed complex expression patterns. Moreover, STs often co-expressed with carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes), sugar catabolic enzymes (SCEs), and some transcription factors (TFs). Co-expression analysis confirmed known functions of D-galacturonic acid and D-xylose STs and suggested roles for newly predicted L-rhamnose STs. Chapter 3 investigates the evolutionary genomic origin of fungal STs by phylogenetically analyzing STs across species in Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Mucoromycota, and Zoopagomycota. Our results showed the total number of STs differed significantly among the studied fungi. Each ST clade had its own unique evolutionary pattern, with expansion of ma

- Abstract
Túngara frogs are common in both natural and urban areas and are therefore an interesting species to study how evolution is affected by urbanization. In this dissertation I investigated the causes and consequences of differences in sexual communication between urban and forest frogs. Light and noise pollution have direct effects on the communication and hormone balance of frogs, and lead to more conspicuous calling behavior. In the city there are fewer predators that prey on calling frogs, so more conspicuous calling behavior in the city has a low risk and can therefore be seen as an adaptation. In addition, I found heritable differences between urban and forest frogs, meaning that these differences could evolve further over several generations. Finally, I showed that light and noise pollution influence interactions between rivals and mate choice and therefore impact fitness, but in a different way for urban and forest frogs. Taken together, it appears that there is potential for evolution of sexual communication in túngara frogs, which could help this species further adapt to urban areas in the long term.

- Abstract
The discovery in the 1920s of a huge cache of fossils in the Gobi Desert fuelled a mania for dinosaurs that continues to the present. But the original goal of the expedition was to search for the origins of man. Henry Fairfield Osborn (1857-1935), director of the American Museum of Natural History, stood at the forefront of the debate over human evolution and the expedition aimed to prove his theory of human origins. Osborn rejected the idea of primate ancestry and constructed a non-Darwinian theory that the evolution of man was the long adventurous story of individuals and groups exerting personal will-power and inborn characteristics to achieve both biological and spiritual success. It is an idea that still echoes today. Study of Osborn's thinking, however, has been obscured by the perception that racism influenced his theories. Brian Regal paints a different and more textured picture in this book - he shows that Osborn's views on race, like his political ideas, were motivated by his science, itself grounded in religious doctrine. His belief in the Central Asian origins of man, his role as an activist for eugenic reform and immigration controls, his support for Nordicism, his place in the'New'versus'Old'biology debate, his role in the Christian Fundamentalist controversy, the Scopes Monkey trial, and finally his construction of the'Dawn Man'hypothesis - all stemmed from his desire to support his human evolution theory, and point the way to salvation. This biography charts Osborn's intellectual development, from its roots in the eclectic Christianity of his mother, through his student days with Arnold Guyot, James McCosh, and T.H. Huxley, to his mature work at the American Museum. It examines his trials and tribulations, friendships and conflicts, and the world in which he lived: all contributed to the construction of his theory. It is the dramatic story of a man holding onto ideas that for him represented the very meaning of life itself.

Purpose. The study aims to determine the impact of dysthyroidism on the severity and type of coronary lesion, on vascular function, as well as on the morbidity and mortality of patients with acute coronary syndrome, by finding predictive markers that can be translated into preventive measures that contribute substantially to reduce the number of newly diagnosed patients with coronary heart disease. Methods. We introduced in the study 100 patients recently diagnosed with acute coronary syndrome, without history of ischemic heart disease or thyroid disease, hospitalized in the Cardiology Clinic of the “Bagdasar-Arseni“ Emergency Clinical Hospital Bucharest, for the interventional treatment of acute coronary syndrome. The studied patients were hospitalized between November 2014 and April 2015, with regular follow-up of up to 5 years (telephone or direct interview, conducted at 6 months, 12 months, 24 months, 36 months, 48 months, 60 months), with an average period follow-up of 1006 days, evaluated clinically, bio-humorally, by echocardiography, explored with coronary angiography with the calculation of the SYNTAX score and with the performance of electrocardiogram and pulse wave. The obtained data were integrated in Excel sheets and statistically processed with the Python program. Results. The mortality rate in the patient group was 7% (7 deaths). Descriptively, of the deceased, 6 patients (86%) were male, and as thyroid status 1 hyperthyroid patient (14%), 3 hypothyroid patients (43%) and 3 patients (43%) normothyroid. There were 4 deaths (8%) in the group of patients with unstable angina and 3 deaths (8%) in the group of patients with myocardial infarction without ST-segment elevation. There were no deaths in the group of patients with acute myocardial infarction with ST-segment elevation. At follow-up, 41 patients (41%) were readmitted. Re-hospitalization was influenced by elevated values of mean blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and C-reactive protein, unicoronary atherosclerotic disease and unstable angina at admission. At follow-up, the development of noncardiac events was noted in the evolution of patients, diabetes mellitus occurring in the majority, in almost a quarter of patients (22 patients, respectively 24% developed diabetes over time), 34% (19 patients) in euthyroidism and 8% (3 patients) dysthyroidism. Discussions. Predictive factors for the readmission of the patient with acute coronary syndrome are highlighted the following: increased level of C-reactive protein (p = 0.017), tricoronary vascular damage (p = 0.01), diastolic blood pressure greater than 80 mmHg (p = 0.025), and euthyroid status (p = 0.04). The probability of death for the patient with acute coronary syndrome rises to 66% in the presence of severe systolic dysfunction of the left ventricle (p = 0.006), and to 61% in the case of elevated values of hs troponin I (p = 0.008). In our study, the presence of dysthyroidism in the patient with acute coronary syndrome has a protective role in the development of diabetes in the first 5 years (p = 0.025). Conclusion. Dysthyroidism is associated with increased morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

34. The rise of complex life: Tracing the origins of the eukaryotic cell

- Abstract
Compared with prokaryotes, eukaryotic cells are tremendously complex. Eukaryotic cells are larger, contain more genetic material, have an elaborate endomembrane system and operate a dynamic cytoskeleton. The last eukaryotic common ancestor (LECA) very likely already had this typical eukaryotic organisation. The large gap between prokaryotic and eukaryotic complexity because of the lack of evolutionary intermediates makes the emergence of eukaryotes from prokaryotes (eukaryogenesis) one of the greatest evolutionary enigmas and the topic of a lively scientific debate. Many scenarios have been proposed on the order of events during this transition but empirical data supporting a specific scenario are scarce. The research described in this thesis contributes various novel data. I have reconstructed proto-eukaryotic genetic innovations to illuminate the intermediate stages that resulted in the first complex, eukaryotic cells. To perform these reconstructions, I applied both large-scale phylogenomic and small-scale phylogenetic methods to a diverse set of eukaryotes and prokaryotes. Firstly, I focus on the gene duplications that occurred during the transition. We reconstructed and characterised these proto-eukaryotic duplications. Genes that were inherited form the archaeal ancestor were duplicated frequently while relatively few duplications occurred in endosymbiont-derived and metabolic genes. By analysing the branch lengths in phylogenetic trees, we obtained relative time estimates for the duplication events, mitochondrial endosymbiosis and horizontal gene transfers from other prokaryotes. Proteins that build the complex eukaryotic cell, such as the endomembrane system and cytoskeleton, resulted from early duplications, in contrast with the late duplication of regulatory proteins. According to our time estimates, mitochondrial endosymbiosis probably took place between the two duplication waves. Subsequently, the abovementioned duplication data have been combined with t

- Abstract
Mammals have been around for about 200 million years, and have developed to be one of the most successful animal groups on the planet. In particular the evolutionary steps during the Paleogene Period have been key in this success story. In this contribution, we discus some of the most important developments in mammal evolution during this time period. After the Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/Pg) extinction (66 million years ago), many ecological niches that were taken by other species became available for the surviving mammals. The first million years after this mass extinction involved a lot of diversification and gave rise to a great diversity of Cenozoic mammals. Additionally, the Paleogene is defined by some of the most intense periods of climate change in the last 100 million years, characterized by hyperthermals such as the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM). These climate-events probably were important drivers of evolution in the Paleogene.

36. Evolution of Brain Networks

- Abstract
The brain is an intricate organ responsible for dealing with our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The human brain tripled in size during recent evolution, while the rest of our body stayed more or less the same size. This remarkable change has inspired brain researchers to investigate why such brain expansion took place, and how it affects the way our brain works. In this thesis, we investigated the organization of the brain’s wiring by looking at the connections between each part of the brain and how they form a complex network — the connectome. We compared the human connectome to that of other primate species, including chimpanzees, gorillas, rhesus monkeys, and capuchin monkeys. We found that all these connectomes have important aspects in common: They are wired in an efficient way and contain ‘shortcuts’ between important brain regions for quick communication of information. At the same time, they show subtle differences in their wiring organization that are closely linked with their brain size. For example, larger brains have relatively less long-range connections, likely because long connections take up more and more space in larger brains. Larger brains also show more specialization of connectivity, especially between the left and right sides of the brain. The findings of this thesis help our understanding of human brain evolution by showing the relationships between brain size and connectome organization in a wide range of monkeys and apes. Our work suggests that primate brains are wired according to a shared connectome blueprint, with key aspects of connectome organization found in all the studied species. Brain size and adaptations to specific environments form the variations on this conserved blueprint. In the case of humans, our big brains may have paved the way for extensive specialization of brain connectivity, leading to specialized brain functions such as language and highly developed cognition.

- Abstract
This paper, a result of a field research carried out between the years 2010-2019, is focused on the traditional life from one of the best preserved regions of Romania. In the first part, we followed the evolution of rural life of Maramureş from the 19th century ongoing, noting that the Industrial Revolution has never reached that place, that the region's claimed isolation was not real, and highlighting the most important changes, from the times when the place's life has been completely traditional, until today. Then comes a list of 221 types of jobs still practiced today in Maramures, of which 69 we have listed as occupations, and 152 as handicrafts. Therefore, the Land of Maramureş, an area so small and low inhabited, preserves today one of the highest known concentrations of authentic occupations and crafts. Each activity was noted as practiced by women, men, in rural or urban settings (although in Maramureş the two environments are deeply intertwined), respectively in danger of extinction. We grouped occupations into several major categories: agriculture, animal husbandry, shepherding, hay making, fruit growing, viticulture, hunting, fishing, beekeeping, foraging, forestry, transportation, food preparation and motherhood. The handicrafts were systematized taking into account first (but not only) the raw material processed: textile fibers processing, wool processing, beading, bridal crowns, wood processing, musical instruments making, basket making, leather processing, various types of water powered mills, bone and horn processing, metal processing, stone processing, clay processing, the end of the study being assigned to a heterogeneous category, which we called „other occupations, crafts, services and skills". Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease associated with pruritus that occurs most frecquently in children. A family history of atopy (eczema, asthma, or allergic rhinitis) and skin barrier abnormalities genetically determined are major risk factors for atopic dermatitis. The diagnosis of atopic dermatitis is clinical, based upon the history, onset, and morphology of skin lesions. The goals of treatment are to reduce symptoms, prevent exacerbations, to improve the quality of life and minimize therapeutic risks. The optimal management is based on the severity of the disease and involves the elimination of exacerbating factors, restoration of the skin barrier function, pharmacologic treatment of skin inflammation (topic and systemic agents), and patient education. The district of Baia Mare, located in the eastern area of Satu Mare County, includes all the shapes of relief (mountains, hills, plain) and this is a fact to leave mark upon the population’s life and evolution. The largest number of localities is located along the valleys that dig the territory, the Someș Valley especially. The Depression of Oaș and this one of Maramureș are also intensely populated, with a high number of localities. Apa and Medieșu Aurit are to be noted for their highest demographic density, in the area of the Someș Valley, a proper place for agriculture and for a better living standard so. Mining was the occupational filed for many of the district’s habitants, especially for those in the mountainous areas of Oaș and Baia Mare, and Baia Sprie countryside, together with breeding and farming. The mining workers’ life was particularly difficult. The privileged statutes of the two towns mentioned above proves the mining ampleness and importance in this district which was the unique territorial-administrative unit to include two royal free towns in the county of Satu Mare. This study aims to be a detalied analysis, which, through its structure, methods, procedures and content, contributes to the clarification of the issues related to the capacity of the territorial systems to adapt in the analyzed region. The results were achived by analyzing the tourist flows, compared to the previous years, everything being outlined by the prospects of this area's development. The results show a low number of tourists due to a poor process of modernization, lack of involvement of local authorities and little marketing, as the county is not included in the category of the recognized tourist destinations. This area has a high potential for tourism, so it is necessary for the county to be known both at national and international level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MYOCARDIAL infarction , *PERCUTANEOUS coronary intervention , *GENDER specific care , *HOSPITAL mortality , *SEX factors in disease , *TREATMENT effectiveness - Abstract
Objectives - Previous studies reported outcome differences following ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) between genders. We aimed to evaluate gender-related differences in in-hospital post-STEMI outcomes and to identify the substrate of such differences, if present. Methods - Cardiovascular risk factors, hemodynamic, electrographic, echocardiographic, angiographic status, and blood parameters at hospital admission were retrospectively assessed for 672 patients presented with STEMI treated by primary percutaneous coronary intervention. In-hospital post-STEMI outcomes were evaluated. All parameters were compared between female and male patients. Results - Among all STEMI patients, 30.3% were females. Compared to male patients, women were older and more often had a history of heart failure (p≤0.0001). They were also more frequently hypertensive (p = 0.02) and diabetic (p< 0.001). Post-STEMI, female patients presented more often cardiogen shock (p = 0.01) and required more frequently diuretic therapy (p< 0.001). In-hospital mortality was also higher in female than in male patients (p< 0.01). However, after adjusting for the potential confounders, female gender did not remain an independent predictor of in-hospital mortality (p=0.16). Conclusions - Female patients had higher rates of post-STEMI complications and higher in-hospital mortality. However, these gender-related differences appear to be fully explained by the higher cardiovascular risk factors burden in females. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
