We present a 6-D map of the Orphan-Chenab (OC) stream by combining the data from Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey ($S^5$) and {\it Gaia}. We reconstruct the proper motion, radial velocity, distance, on-sky track and stellar density along the stream with spline models. The stream has a total luminosity of $M_V=-8.2$ and metallicity of $\mathrm{[Fe/H]}=-1.9$, similar to classical Milky Way (MW) satellites like Draco. The stream shows drastic changes in its physical width varying from 200 pc to 1 kpc, but a constant line of sight velocity dispersion of 5 km/ss. Despite the large apparent variation in the stellar number density along the stream, the flow rate of stars along the stream is remarkably constant. We model the 6-D stream track by a Lagrange-point stripping method with a flexible MW potential in the presence of a moving extended Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). This allows us to constrain the mass profile of the MW within the distance range 15.6 < r < 55.5 kpc, with the best measured enclosed mass of $(2.85\pm 0.1)\times 10^{11}\,M_\odot$ within 32.4 kpc. Our stream measurements are highly sensitive to the LMC mass profile with the most precise measurement of its enclosed mass made at 32.8 kpc, $(7.02\pm 0.9)\times10^{10}\, {\rm M}_\odot$. We also detect that the LMC dark matter halo extends to at least 53 kpc. The fitting of the OC stream allows us to constrain the past LMC trajectory and the degree of dynamical friction it experienced. The recurrent nova RS Oph underwent a new outburst on August 8, 2021, reaching a visible brightness of V = 4.8 mag. Observations of the 2021 outburst made with the high resolution UVES spectrograph at the Kueyen-UT2 telescope of ESO-VLT in Paranal enabled detection of the possible presence of 7Be freshly made in the thermonuclear runaway reactions. The 7Be yields can be estimated in N(Be)/N(H) = 5.7 x 10^(-6), which are close to the lowest yields measured in classical novae so far. 7Be is short-lived and decays only into 7Li. By means of a spectrum taken during the nebular phase we estimated an ejected mass of about 1.1 x 10^(-5) Msun, providing an amount of about 4.4x 10^(-10) Msun of 7Li created in the 2021 event. Recurrent novae of the kind of RS Oph may synthesize slightly lower amount of 7Li per event as classical novae, but occur 10^3 times more frequently. The recurrent novae fraction is in the range of 10-30% and they could have contributed to the making of 7Li we observe today. The detection of 7Be in RS Oph provides further support to the recent suggestion that novae are the most effective source of 7Li in the Galaxy., Accepted 2022 September 17. Relying on the dramatic increase in the number of stars with full 6D phase-space information provided by the Gaia Data Release 3, we discover unambiguous signatures of phase-mixing in the stellar halo around the Sun. We show that for the stars likely belonging to the last massive merger, the (v_r,r) distribution contains a series of long and thin chevron-like overdensities. These phase-space sub-structures are predicted to emerge following the dissolution of a satellite, when its tidal debris is given time to wind up, thin out and fold. Additionally, the observed energy and angular momentum (E, L_z) distribution appears more prograde at high energies, possibly revealing the original orbital angular momentum of the in-falling galaxy. The energy distribution of the debris is strongly asymmetric with a peak at low E -- which, we surmise, may be evidence of the dwarf's rapid sinking -- and riddled with wrinkles and bumps. If these small-scale energy inhomogeneities have been seeded during or immediately after the interaction with the Milky Way, and are not due to the spatial restriction of our study, then making use of the (v_r,r) chevrons to constrain the time of the merger becomes cumbersome. Nonetheless, we demonstrate that similar phase-space and (E,L_z) sub-structures are present in numerical simulations of galaxy interactions, both in bespoke N-body runs and in cosmological hydrodynamical zoom-in suites. The remnant traces of the progenitor's disruption and the signatures of the on-going phase-mixing discovered here will not only help to constrain the properties of our Galaxy's most important interaction, but also can be used as a novel tool to map out the Milky Way's current gravitational potential and its perturbations., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, submitted to MNRAS. The spatial distribution of elemental abundances and their time evolution are among the major constraints to disentangle the scenarios of formation and evolution of the Galaxy. We used the sample of open clusters available in the final release of the Gaia-ESO survey to trace the Galactic radial abundance and abundance to iron ratio gradients, and their time evolution. We selected member stars in 62 open clusters, with ages from 0.1 to about 7~Gyr, located in the Galactic thin disc at Galactocentric radii from about 6 to 21~kpc. We analysed the shape of the resulting [Fe/H] gradient, the average gradients [El/H] and [El/Fe] combining elements belonging to four different nucleosynthesis channels, and their individual abundance and abundance ratio gradients. We also investigated the time evolution of the gradients dividing open clusters in three age bins. The[Fe/H] gradient has a slope of -0.054 dex~kpc-1. We saw different behaviours for elements belonging to different channels. We found that the youngest clusters in the inner disc have lower metallicity than their older counterpart and they outline a flatter gradient. We considered some possible explanations, including the effects of gas inflow and migration. We suggested that it might be a bias introduced by the standard spectroscopic analysis producing lower metallicities in low gravity stars. To delineate the shape of the `true' gradient, we should limit our analysis to stars with low surface gravity logg>2.5 and xi, 25 pages, 14 figures and 4 tables in the main text, 3 figures and 7 tables in the Appendix. We report on the search for the 7Be ii isotope in the outbursts of the classical nova V6595 Sgr by means of high-resolution Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) observations taken at the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in 2021 April, about two weeks after its discovery and under difficult circumstances due to the pandemic. Narrow absorption components with velocities at -2620 and-2820 km s-1, superposed on broader and shallow absorption, are observed in the outburst spectra for the 7Be ii λλ313.0583, 313.1228 nm doublet resonance lines, as well as in several other elements such as Ca ii, Fe i, Mg i, Na i, H i and Li i. Using the Ca ii K line as a reference element, we infer N(7Be)/N(H) ≈ 7.4 × 10-6, or ≈ 9.8 × 10-6 when the 7Be decay is taken into account. The 7Be abundance is about half of the value most frequently measured in novae. The possible presence of overionization in the layers where 7Be ii is detected is also discussed. Observations taken at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo in La Palma 91 days after discovery showed prominent emission lines of oxygen and neon, which allow us to classify the nova as ONe type. Therefore, although 7Be is expected to be higher in CO novae, it is found at comparable levels in both nova types., LI was supported by two grants from VILLUM FONDEN (project number 16599 and 25501). Using data from the GALAH survey, we explore the dependence of elemental abundances on stellar age and metallicity among Galactic disc stars. We find that the abundance of most elements can be predicted from age and [Fe/H] with an intrinsic scatter of about 0.03 dex. We discuss the possible causes for the existence of the abundance-age-metallicity relations. Using a stochastic chemical enrichment scheme based on the size of Supernovae remnants, we show the intrinsic scatter is expected to be small, about 0.05 dex or even smaller if there is additional mixing in the ISM. Elemental abundances show trends with both age and metallicity and the relationship is well described by a simple model in which the dependence of abundance ([X/Fe]) on age and [Fe/H] are additively separable. Elements can be grouped based on the direction of their abundance gradient in the (age,[Fe/H]) plane and different groups can be roughly associated with three distinct nucleosynthetic production sites, the exploding massive stars, the exploding white dwarfs and the AGB stars. However, the abundances of some elements, like Co, La, and Li, show large scatter for a given age and metallicity, suggesting processes other than simple Galactic chemical evolution are at play. We also compare the abundance trends of main-sequence turn-off stars against that of giants, whose ages were estimated using asteroseismic information from the K2 mission. For most elements, the trends of main-sequence turn-off stars are similar to that of giants. In recent years, Galactic archaeology has become a particularly vibrant field of astronomy, with its main focus set on the oldest stars of our Galaxy. In most cases, these stars have been identified as the most metal-poor. However, the struggle to find these ancient fossils has produced an important bias in the observations - in particular, the intermediate metal-poor stars (-2.5, 21 pages, 23 figures, online material. We report a galaxy group candidate HPC1001 at z approximate to 3.7 in the COSMOS field. This structure was selected as a high galaxy overdensity at z > 3 in the COSMOS2020 catalog. It contains ten candidate members, of which eight are assembled in a 10 '' x 10 '' area with the highest sky density among known protoclusters and groups at z > 3. Four out of ten sources were also detected at 1.2mm with Atacama Large Millimeter Array continuum observations. Photometric redshifts, measured by four independent methods, fall within a narrow range of 3.5 < z < 3.9 and with a weighted average of z = 3.65 +/- 0.07. The integrated far-IR-to-radio spectral energy distribution yields a total UV and IR star formation rate SFR approximate to 900 M-circle dot yr(-1). We also estimated a halo mass of similar to 10(13) M-circle dot for the structure, which at this redshift is consistent with potential cold gas inflow. Remarkably, the most massive member has a specific star formation rate and dust to stellar mass ratio of M-dust/M-* that are both significantly lower than that of star-forming galaxies at this redshift, suggesting that HPC1001 could be a z approximate to 3.7 galaxy group in maturing phase. If confirmed, this would be the earliest structure in maturing phase to date, and an ideal laboratory to study the formation of the earliest quiescent galaxies as well as cold gas accretion in dense environments.

Using NOEMA and ALMA 3mm line scans, we measure spectroscopic redshifts of six new dusty galaxies at 3.56, based on template IR spectrum energy distribution (SED) from known submillimeter galaxies at z=4--6. Dust SED analyses explain the photo-z overestimate from seemingly cold dust temperatures (Td) and steep Rayleigh-Jeans (RJ) slopes, providing additional examples of cold dusty galaxies impacted by the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). We therefore study the general properties of the enlarged sample of 10 ``cold" dusty galaxies over 3.5~4, together with the severe impact of the CMB on their RJ observables, paving the way for the diagnostics of optically thick dust in the early universe. Conventional gas mass estimates based on RJ dust continuum luminosities implicitly assume an optically thin case, overestimating gas masses by a factor of 2--3 on average in compact dusty star-forming galaxies., Comment: Published version in A&A

We study the evolution of the [Eu/Fe] ratio in the Galactic halo by means of a stochastic chemical evolution model considering merging neutron stars as polluters of europium. We improved our previous stochastic chemical evolution model by adding a time delay distribution for the coalescence of the neutron stars, instead of constant delays. The stochastic chemical evolution model can reproduce the trend and the observed spread in the [Eu/Fe] data with neutron star mergers as unique producers if we assume: (i) a delay time distribution ∝t−1.5, (ii) an $M_{\boldsymbol{ Eu}}= 3 \times 10^{-6} \, \boldsymbol{M}_{\odot }$ per event, (iii) progenitors of neutron stars in the range $9\!-\!50\, \boldsymbol{M}_{\odot}$, and (iv) a constant fraction of massive stars in the initial mass function (0.02) that produce neutron star mergers. Our best model is obtained by relaxing point (iv) and assuming a fraction that varies with metallicity. We confirm that the mixed scenario with both merging neutron stars and supernovae as europium producers can provide a good agreement with the data relaxing the constraints on the distribution time delays for the coalescence of neutron stars. Adopting our best model, we also reproduce the dispersion of [Eu/Fe] at a given metallicity, which depends on the fraction of massive stars that produce neutron star mergers. Future high-resolution spectroscopic surveys, such as 4MOST and WEAVE, will produce the necessary statistics to constrain at best this parameter.

Gaia DR3 opens a new era of all-sky spectral analysis of stellar populations thanks to the nearly 5.6 million stars observed by the RVS and parametrised by the GSP-spec module. The all-sky Gaia chemical cartography allows a powerful and precise chemo-dynamical view of the Milky Way with unprecedented spatial coverage and statistical robustness. First, it reveals the strong vertical symmetry of the Galaxy and the flared structure of the disc. Second, the observed kinematic disturbances of the disc -- seen as phase space correlations -- and kinematic or orbital substructures are associated with chemical patterns that favour stars with enhanced metallicities and lower [alpha/Fe] abundance ratios compared to the median values in the radial distributions. This is detected both for young objects that trace the spiral arms and older populations. Several alpha, iron-peak elements and at least one heavy element trace the thin and thick disc properties in the solar cylinder. Third, young disc stars show a recent chemical impoverishment in several elements. Fourth, the largest chemo-dynamical sample of open clusters analysed so far shows a steepening of the radial metallicity gradient with age, which is also observed in the young field population. Finally, the Gaia chemical data have the required coverage and precision to unveil galaxy accretion debris and heated disc stars on halo orbits through their [alpha/Fe] ratio, and to allow the study of the chemo-dynamical properties of globular clusters. Gaia DR3 chemo-dynamical diagnostics open new horizons before the era of ground-based wide-field spectroscopic surveys. It has recently been shown that the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) has a substantial effect on the Milky Way's stellar halo and stellar streams. Here, we explore how deformations of the Milky Way and LMC's dark matter haloes affect stellar streams, and whether these effects are observable. In particular, we focus on the Orphan-Chenab (OC) stream which passes particularly close to the LMC, and spans a large portion of the Milky Way's halo. We represent the Milky Way--LMC system using basis function expansions that capture their evolution in an $N$-body simulation. We present the properties of this system, such as the evolution of the densities and force fields of each galaxy. The OC stream is evolved in this time-dependent, deforming potential, and we investigate the effects of the various moments of the Milky Way and the LMC. We find that the simulated OC stream is strongly influenced by the deformations of both the Milky Way and the LMC, and that this effect is much larger than current observational errors. In particular, the Milky Way dipole has the biggest impact on the stream, followed by the evolution of the LMC's monopole, and the LMC's quadrupole. Detecting these effects would confirm a key prediction of collisionless, cold dark matter, and would be a powerful test of alternative dark matter and alternative gravity models., 17 pages, 10 figures. The Javalambre-Physics of the Accelerating Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS) is expected to map thousands of square degrees of the northern sky with 56 narrowband filters (spectral resolution of R ∼ 60) in the upcoming years. This resolution allows us to study emission line galaxies (ELGs) with a minimum equivalent width of 10 Å in the Hα emission line for a median signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of 5. This will make J-PAS a very competitive and unbiased emission line survey compared to spectroscopic or narrowband surveys with fewer filters. The miniJPAS survey covered 1 deg2, and it used the same photometric system as J-PAS, but the observations were carried out with the pathfinder J-PAS camera. In this work, we identify and characterize the sample of ELGs from miniJPAS with a redshift lower than 0.35, which is the limit to which the Hα line can be observed with the J-PAS filter system. Using a method based on artificial neural networks, we detect the ELG population and measure the equivalent width and flux of the Hα, Hβ, [O III], and [N II] emission lines. We explore the ionization mechanism using the diagrams [OIII]/Hβ versus [NII]/Hα (BPT) and EW(Hα) versus [NII]/Hα (WHAN). We identify 1787 ELGs (83%) from the parent sample (2154 galaxies) in the AEGIS field. For the galaxies with reliable EW values that can be placed in the WHAN diagram (2000 galaxies in total), we obtained that 72.8 ± 0.4%, 17.7 ± 0.4%, and 9.4 ± 0.2% are star-forming (SF), active galactic nucleus (Seyfert), and quiescent galaxies, respectively. The distribution of EW(Hα) is well correlated with the bimodal color distribution of galaxies. Based on the rest-frame (u − r)–stellar mass diagram, 94% of the blue galaxies are SF galaxies, and 97% of the red galaxies are LINERs or passive galaxies. The nebular extinction and star formation rate (SFR) were computed from the Hα and Hβ fluxes. We find that the star formation main sequence is described as log SFR [M⊙ yr−1] = 0.90−0.02+0.02 log M⋆[M⊙]−8.85−0.20+0.19 and has an intrinsic scatter of 0.20−0.01+0.01. The cosmic evolution of the SFR density (ρSFR) is derived at three redshift bins: 0 < z ≤ 0.15, 0.15 < z ≤ 0.25, and 0.25 < z ≤ 0.35, which agrees with previous results that were based on measurements of the Hα emission line. However, we find an offset with respect to other estimates that were based on the star formation history obtained from fitting the spectral energy distribution of the stellar continuum. Abundances of light elements in dwarf stars of different ages are important constraints for stellar yields, Galactic chemical evolution and exoplanet chemical composition studies. We have measured C and N abundances and $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C ratios for a sample of 63 solar twins spanning a wide range in age, based on spectral synthesis of a comprehensive list of CH\,A-X and CN\,B-X features using HARPS spectra. The analysis of 55 thin disc solar twins confirms the dependences of [C/Fe] and [N/Fe] on [Fe/H]. [N/Fe] is investigated as a function of [Fe/H] and age for the first time for these stars. Our derived correlation [C/Fe]-age agrees with works for solar-type stars and solar twins, but the [N/Fe]-age correlation does not. The relations [C,N/Fe]-[Fe/H] and [C,N/Fe]-age for the solar twins lay under-solar. $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C is found correlated with [Fe/H] and seems to have decreased along the evolution of the local thin disc. Predictions from chemical evolution models for the solar vicinity corroborate the relations [C,N/Fe]-[Fe/H], $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C-age and [N/O]-[O/H], but do not for the $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C-[Fe/H] and [C/O]-[O/H] relations. The N/O ratio in the Sun is placed at the high end of the homogeneous distribution of solar twins, which suggests uniformity in the N-O budget for the formation of icy planetesimals, watery super-earths and giant planets. C and N had different nucleosynthetic origins along the thin disc evolution, as shown by the relations of [C/N], [C/O] and [N/O] against [O/H] and age. We study the evolution of Milky Way thick and thin discs in the light of the most recent observational data. In particular, we analyze abundance gradients of O, N, Fe and Mg along the thin disc as well as the [Mg/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] relations and the metallicity distribution functions at different Galactocentric distances. We run several models starting from the two-infall paradigm, assuming that the thick and thin discs formed by means of two different infall episodes, and we explore several physical parameters, such as radial gas flows, variable efficiency of star formation, different times for the maximum infall onto the disc, different distributions of the total surface mass density of the thick disc and enriched gas infall. Our best model suggests that radial gas flows and variable efficiency of star formation should be acting together with the inside-out mechanism for the thin disc formation. The timescale for maximum infall onto the thin disc, which determines the gap between the formation of the two discs, should be $t_{max}\simeq 3.25$ Gyr. The thick disc should have an exponential, small scale length density profile and gas infall on the inner thin disc should be enriched. We compute also the evolution of Gaia-Enceladus system and study the effects of possible interactions with the thick and thin discs. We conclude that the gas lost by Enceladus or even part of it could have been responsible for the formation of the thick disc but not the thin disc., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, 5 tables. We extend our previous work on the age-chemical abundance structure of the Galactic outer disc to the inner disc (4 < r < 8 kpc) based on the SDSS/APOGEE survey. Different from the outer disc, the inner disc stars exhibit a clear bimodal distribution in the [Mg/Fe]-[Fe/H] plane. While a number of scenarios have been proposed in the literature, it remains challenging to recover this bimodal distribution with theoretical models. To this end, we present a chemical evolution model embedding a complex multi-phase inner disc formation scenario that matches the observed bimodal [Mg/Fe]-[Fe/H] distribution. In this scenario, the formation of the inner disc is dominated by two main starburst episodes 6 Gyr apart with secular, low-level star formation activity in between. In our model, the first starburst occurs at early cosmic times (t~1 Gyr) and the second one 6 Gyr later at a cosmic time of t~7 Gyr. Both these starburst episodes are associated with gas accretion events in our model, and are quenched rapidly. The first starburst leads to the formation of the high-$\alpha$ sequence, and the second starburst leads to the formation of the metal-poor low-$\alpha$ sequence. The metal-rich low-$\alpha$ stars, instead, form during the secular evolution phase between the two bursts. Our model shows that the $\alpha$-dichotomy originates from the rapid suppression of star formation after the first starburst. The two starburst episodes are likely to be responsible for the formation of the geometric thick disc (z >1 kpc), with the old inner thick disc and the young outer thick disc forming during the first and the second starbursts, respectively., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures. In this Thesis, we investigate the chemical and dust evolution of the different galactic environments we encounter during the cosmic history, from the high-redshift Universe to the Milky Way. The study of the evolution of galaxies is performed by means of detailed chemical evolution models that predict the abundances of single chemical elements in the interstellar medium as well as the condensation into dust of the chemical elements. In the first part of the Thesis, we concentrate on the study of moderate to high-redshift systems. We start focusing on high-redshift starburst galaxies, whose extreme conditions pose questions on the universality of the initial mass function (IMF) as well as on the processes regulating the ISM dust. For these reasons, we test the the impact of the IMF shape on high-redshift environments by applying the so-called Integrated Galactic IMF (IGIMF) theory in models specifically suited for starburst galaxies. In this way, we look at the interplay between the IMF and dust processes in shaping the observed gas abundance patterns as well as global dust quantities. This analysis highlights the degenerate effect of the IGIMF and dust on abundance patterns and suggests that the IGIMF can explain the dust masses observed in some high-redshift star forming objects. To get a more complete picture about dust through cosmic evolution, we also investigate how dust quantities evolve at larger volume scales. To this aim, we present a novel method to compute the redshift evolution of dust mass in galaxy clusters. This is done by integrating the predictions of chemical and dust evolution models for individual galaxies over the galaxy cluster luminosity function (LF), assuming suitable cosmological scenarios for the LF evolution. By applying this method, we reproduce the dust amounts observed in low and intermediate-redshift galaxy clusters and we answer to some questions about dust in cluster. In particular, we find that spiral galaxies are the most important dust producers within clusters and that galactic ejecta can account alone for the observed intracluster dust. In the second part of the Thesis, instead, we focus on study of the local Universe and in particular of the MW Galaxy. We start investigating the evolution of the MW thick and thin discs by comparing MW models with recent survey data. In particular, we discuss the formation of abundance gradients in the MW and the main physical parameters influencing this process, concluding that inside-out disc formation should act together with radial gas flows and variable efficiency of star formation. Moreover, we suggest that to reproduce the observed [α/Fe] dichotomy/bimodality (i.e., the presence of two distinct data sequences in the [α/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] diagram) at different Galactocentric distances, one should assume a prolonged gap between the formation of the thick and thin discs and a chemically enriched gas accretion in the innermost thin disc. Finally, we study the impact of different Type Ia SN yields on the evolution of Fe-peak elements in our Galaxy. To this aim, we apply to our chemical models for the MW a large compilation of Type Ia SN yields from the recent literature, sampling different explosion mechanisms. The obtained results are compared with those obtained with classical Type Ia SN prescriptions adopted in previous studies. In addition, we allow combinations of of Type Ia SN yields from different progenitor classes to assess their role in terms of the chemical enrichment. We find that the chemical abundance patterns strongly depend not only on the explosion mechanism but also on other conditions. Moreover, the comparison with the observed abundance trends suggests that a combination of different classes of explosion is necessary to reproduce the data. In this Thesis, we investigate the chemical and dust evolution of the different galactic environments we encounter during the cosmic history, from the high-redshift Universe to the Milky Way. The study of the evolution of galaxies is performed by means of detailed chemical evolution models that predict the abundances of single chemical elements in the interstellar medium as well as the condensation into dust of the chemical elements. In the first part of the Thesis, we concentrate on the study of moderate to high-redshift systems. We start focusing on high-redshift starburst galaxies, whose extreme conditions pose questions on the universality of the initial mass function (IMF) as well as on the processes regulating the ISM dust. For these reasons, we test the the impact of the IMF shape on high-redshift environments by applying the so-called Integrated Galactic IMF (IGIMF) theory in models specifically suited for starburst galaxies. Voids are the most under-dense large-scale regions in the Universe. Galaxies inhabiting voids are one of the keys for understanding the intrinsic processes of galaxy evolution, as external factors such as multiple galaxy mergers or a dense self-collapsing environment are negligible. Aims. We present the first molecular gas mass survey of void galaxies. We compare these new data together with data for the atomic gas mass (MH I) and star formation rate (SFR) from the literature to those of galaxies in filaments and walls in order to better understand how molecular gas and star formation are related to the large-scale environment. Methods. We observed at the IRAM 30 m telescope the CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) emission of 20 void galaxies selected from the Void Galaxy Survey, with a stellar mass range from 108.5 to 1010.3 M·. We detected 15 objects in at least one CO line. We compared the molecular gas mass (MH2), the star formation efficiency (SFE = SFR/MH2), the atomic gas mass, the molecular-to-atomic gas mass ratio, and the specific star formation rate (sSFR) of the void galaxies with two control samples of galaxies in filaments and walls, selected from xCOLD GASS and EDGE-CALIFA, for different stellar mass bins and taking the star formation activity into account. Results. In general, we do not find any significant differences between void galaxies and the control sample. In particular, we do not find any evidence for a difference in the molecular gas mass or molecular gas mass fraction. For the other parameters (SFE, atomic gas mass, molecular-to-atomic gas mass ratio, and sSFR), we also find similar (within the errors) mean values between void and filament and wall galaxies when the sample is limited to star-forming galaxies. We find no evidence for an enhanced sSFR in void galaxies. Some tentative differences emerge when trends with stellar mass are studied: The SFE of void galaxies might be lower than in filament and wall galaxies for low stellar masses, and there might be a trend of increasing deficiency in the HI content in void galaxies compared to galaxies in filaments and walls for higher stellar masses, accompanied by an increase in the molecular-to-atomic gas mass ratio. However, all trends with stellar mass are based on a low number of galaxies and need to be confirmed for a larger sample. Conclusions. The results for the molecular gas mass for a sample of 20 voids galaxies allowed us to make a statistical comparison to galaxies in filaments and walls for the first time. In this paper, we assess the impact of numerical resolution and of the implementation of energy input from AGN feedback models on the inner structure of cluster sub-haloes in hydrodynamic simulations. We compare several zoom-in re-simulations of a sub-sample of the cluster-sized haloes studied in Meneghetti et al. (2020), obtained by varying mass resolution, softening length and AGN energy feedback scheme. We study the impact of these different setups on the subhalo abundances, their radial distribution, their density and mass profiles and the relation between the maximum circular velocity, which is a proxy for subhalo compactness. Regardless of the adopted numerical resolution and feedback model, subhaloes with masses Msub < 1e11Msun/h, the most relevant mass-range for galaxy-galaxy strong lensing, have maximum circular velocities ~30% smaller than those measured from strong lensing observations of Bergamini et al. (2019). We also find that simulations with less effective AGN energy feedback produce massive subhaloes (Msub> 1e11 Msun/h ) with higher maximum circular velocity and that their Vmax - Msub relation approaches the observed one. However the stellar-mass number count of these objects exceeds the one found in observations and we find that the compactness of these simulated subhaloes is the result of an extremely over-efficient star formation in their cores, also leading to larger-than-observed subhalo stellar mass. We conclude that simulations are unable to simultaneously reproduce the observed stellar masses and compactness (or maximum circular velocities) of cluster galaxies. Thus, the discrepancy between theory and observations that emerged from the analysis of Meneghetti et al. (2020) persists. We report the discovery of a compact group of galaxies, CGG-z5, at z~5.2 in the EGS field covered by the JWST/CEERS survey. CGG-z5 was selected as the highest overdensity of galaxies at z>2 in recent JWST public surveys and it consists of six candidate members lying within a projected area of $1.5''\times3''$ (10$\times$20~kpc$^2$). All group members are HST/F435W and HST/F606W dropouts while securely detected in the JWST/NIRCam bands, yielding a narrow range of robust photometric redshifts $5.011$) at z~1. This implies that CGG-z5 could be a "proto-massive galaxy" captured during a short-lived phase of massive galaxy formation., Comment: A&A Letter in press

Context. The [Mg/Fe] abundance ratios are a fundamental fossil signature to trace the chemical evolution of the disc. Despite of the huge observational and theoretical effort, discrepancies between models and data are still present and several explanations have been put forward to explain the [$\alpha$/Fe] bimodality. Aims. In this work, we take advantage of a new AMBRE:HARPS dataset, which provides new and more precise [Mg/Fe] estimations, as well as reliable stellar ages for a subsample of stars, to study the evolution of the solar neighbourhood. Methods. The above data are compared with detailed chemical evolution models for the Milky Way, exploring the most used prescriptions for stellar yields and different formation scenarios for the Galactic disc, i.e. the delayed two-infall and the parallel model, also including prescriptions for stellar radial migration. Results. We see that most of the stellar yields struggle to reproduce the observed trend of the data and that semi-empirical yields are still the best to describe the [Mg/Fe] evolution in the thick and thin discs. In particular, most of the yields still predict a steeper decrease of the [Mg/Fe] ratio at high metallicity than what is shown by the data. The bulk of the data are well reproduced by the parallel and two-infall scenarios, but both scenarios have problems in explaining the most metal-rich and metal-poor tails of the low-$\alpha$ data. These tails can be explained in light of radial migration from inner and outer disc regions, respectively. Conclusions. Despite of the evidence of stellar migration, it is difficult to estimate the actual contribution of stars from other parts of the disc to the solar vicinity. However, the comparison between data and models suggests that peculiar histories of star formation, such as that of the two-infall model, are still needed to reproduce the observed distribution of stars., Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures. We report the identification of a set of old super metal-rich dwarf stars with orbits of low eccentricity that reach a maximum height from the Galactic plane between ~0.5-1.5 kpc. We discuss their properties to understand their origins. We use data from the internal data release 6 of the Gaia-ESO Survey. We selected stars observed at high resolution with abundances of 21 species of 18 individual elements. We apply hierarchical clustering to group the stars with similar chemical abundances within the complete chemical abundance space. According to their chemical properties, this set of super metal-rich stars can be arranged into five subgroups. Four seem to follow a chemical enrichment flow, where nearly all abundances increase in lockstep with Fe. The fifth subgroup shows different chemical characteristics. All subgroups have the following features: median ages of the order of 7-9 Gyr, Solar or sub-Solar [Mg/Fe] ratios, maximum height between 0.5-1.5 kpc, low eccentricities, and a detachment from the expected metallicity gradient with guiding radius. The high metallicity of our stars is incompatible with a formation in the Solar neighbourhood. Their dynamic properties agree with theoretical expectations that these stars travelled from the inner Galaxy due to blurring and, most importantly, to churning. We suggest that most of this population's stars originated in the Milky Way's inner regions (inner disc and/or the bulge) and later migrated to the Solar neighbourhood. Aims. In this work, we aim to make a differential comparison of the neutron-capture and p-process element molybdenum (Mo) in the stellar populations in the local disk(s) and the bulge, focusing on minimising possible systematic effects in the analysis. Methods. The stellar sample consists of 45 bulge and 291 local disk K-giants, observed with high-resolution optical spectra. The abundances are determined by fitting synthetic spectra using the SME-code. The disk sample is separated into thin- and thick-disk components using a combination of abundances and kinematics. The cosmic origin of Mo is investigated and discussed by comparing with previous published abundances of Mo and the neutron-capture elements cerium (Ce) and europium (Eu). Results. We determine reliable Mo abundances for 35 bulge and 282 disk giants with a typical uncertainty of [Mo/Fe]~0.2 and ~0.1 dex for the bulge and disk, respectively. Conclusions. We find that the bulge possibly is enhanced in [Mo/Fe] compared to the thick disk, which we do not observe in either [Ce/Fe] nor [Eu/Fe]. This might suggest a higher past star-formation rate in the bulge, however, since we do not observe the bulge to be enhanced in [Eu/Fe], the origin of the molybdenum enhancement is yet to be constrained. The recent Gaia Third Data Release contains a homogeneous analysis of millions of high-quality Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS) stellar spectra by the GSP-Spec module. This led to the estimation of millions of individual chemical abundances and allows us to chemically map the Milky Way. Among the published GSP-Spec abundances, three heavy-elements produced by neutron-captures in stellar interiors can be found: Ce, Zr and Nd. We use a sample of about 30,000 LTE Ce abundances, selected after applying different combinations of GSP-Spec flags. Thanks to the Gaia DR3 astrometric data and radial velocities, we explore the cerium content in the Milky Way and, in particular, in its halo and disc components. The high quality of the Ce GSP-Spec abundances is quantified thanks to literature comparisons. We found a rather flat [Ce/Fe] versus [M/H] trend. We also found a flat radial gradient in the disc derived from field stars and, independently, from about 50 open clusters, in agreement with previous studies. The [Ce/Fe] vertical gradient has also been estimated. We also report an increasing [Ce/Ca] vs [Ca/H] in the disc, illustrating the late contribution of AGB with respect to SN II. Our cerium abundances in the disc, including the young massive population, are well reproduced by a new three-infall chemical evolution model. Among the halo population, the M 4 globular cluster is found to be enriched in cerium. Moreover, eleven stars with cerium abundances belonging to the Thamnos, Helmi Stream and Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus accreted systems were identified from chemo-dynamical diagnostics. We found that the Helmi Stream could be slightly underabundant in cerium, compared to the two other systems. This work illustrates the high quality of the GSP-Spec chemical abundances, that significantly contributes to unveil the heavy elements evolution history of the Milky Way., 17 pages, 12 figures, accepted by A&A

We analyse high resolution spectra of two classical novae that exploded in the Small Magellanic Cloud. $^7$Be II resonance transitions are detected in both ASASSN-19qv and ASASSN-20ni novae. This is the first detection outside the Galaxy and confirms that thermo-nuclear runaway reactions, leading to the $^7$Be formation, are effective also in the low metallicity regime, characteristic of the SMC. Derived yields are of N($^7$Be=$^7$Li)/N(H) = (5.3 $\pm$ 0.2) $\times$ 10$^{-6}$ which are a factor 4 lower than the typical values of the Galaxy. Inspection of two historical novae in the Large Magellanic Cloud observed with IUE in 1991 and 1992 showed also the possible presence of $^7$Be and similar yields. For an ejecta of $M_{H,ej} =$ 10$^{-5}$ M$_{\odot}$, the amount of $^7$Li produced is of $M_{^7 Li} = (3.7 \pm 0.6) \times 10^{-10}$ M$_{\odot}$ per nova event. Detailed chemical evolutionary model for the SMC shows that novae could have made an amount of lithium in the SMC corresponding to a fractional abundance of A(Li) $\approx$ 2.6. Therefore, it is argued that a comparison with the abundance of Li in the SMC, as measured by its interstellar medium, could effectively constrain the amount of the initial abundance of primordial Li, which is currently controversial., 13 pages, 17 figures, 4 tables. The Milky Way was shaped by the mergers with several galaxies in the past. We search for remnant stars that were born in these foreign galaxies and assess their ages in an effort to put upper limits on the merger times and thereby better understand the evolutionary history of our Galaxy. Using 5D-phase space information from Gaia eDR3, radial velocities from Gaia DR2 and chemical information from apogee DR16, we kinematically and chemically select 21 red giant stars belonging to former dwarf galaxies that merged with the Milky Way. With added asteroseismology from Kepler and K2, we determine the ages of the 21 ex situ stars and 49 in situ stars with an average σage/age of ∼31 per cent. We find that all the ex situ stars are consistent with being older than 8 Gyr. While it is not possible to associate all the stars with a specific dwarf galaxy, we classify eight of them as Gaia-Enceladus/Sausage stars, which is one of the most massive mergers in our Galaxy's history. We determine their mean age to be 9.5 ± 1.3 Gyr consistent with a merger time of 8-10 Gyr ago. The rest of the stars are possibly associated with Kraken, Thamnos, Sequoia, or another extragalactic progenitor. We test a scenario in which radial migration could affect the Li abundance pattern of dwarf stars in the solar neighbourhood. This may confirm that the Li abundance in these stars can not serve as a probe for the Li abundance in the interstellar medium. We use the high-quality data (including Li abundances) from the 6th internal Data Release of the Gaia-ESO survey. In this sample, we group stars by similarity in chemical abundances via hierarchical clustering. Our analysis treats both measured Li abundances and upper limits. The Li envelope of the previously identified radially migrated stars is well below the benchmark meteoritic value (0 should not be decreased, as recently proposed in the literature. Our study backs the recent studies that claimed that old dwarfs on the hot side of the dip are efficient probes of the ISM abundance of Li, provided atomic diffusion does not lower significantly the initial Li abundance in the atmospheres of metal-rich objects., 8 pages, 3 figures. K2 was a community-driven NASA mission where all targets were proposed through guest observer programs. Among those, the K2 Galactic Archaeology Program (K2GAP) was devoted to measuring asteroseismic signals from giant stars to inform studies of the Galaxy, with about 25% of the observed K2 targets being allocated to this program. Here, we provide an overview of this program. We discuss in detail the target selection procedure and provide a python code that implements the selection function, see https://github.com/sanjibs/k2gap . Additionally, we discuss the detection completeness of the asteroseismic parameters $\nu_{\rm max}$ and $\Delta \nu$. Broadly speaking, the targets were selected based on 2MASS color $J-Ks > 0.5$, with finely tuned adjustments for each campaign. Making use of the selection function we compare the observed distribution of asteroseismic masses to theoretical predictions. The median asteroseismic mass is higher by about 4% compared to predictions. Additionally, the number of seismic detections is on average 14% lower than expected. We exploit the unique characteristics of a sample of open clusters (OCs) and field stars for which high-precision 7Li abundances and stellar parameters are homogeneously derived by the Gaia-ESO Survey (GES). We derive possibly undepleted 7Li abundances for 26 OCs and star forming regions with ages from young to old spanning a large range of Galactocentric distances, which allows us to reconstruct the local late Galactic evolution of lithium as well as its current abundance gradient along the disc. Field stars are added to look further back in time and to constrain 7Li evolution in other Galactic components. The data are then compared to theoretical tracks from chemical evolution models that implement different 7Li forges. We find that the upper envelope of the 7Li abundances measured in field stars of nearly solar metallicities traces very well the level of lithium enrichment attained by the ISM as inferred from observations of cluster stars. We confirm previous findings that the abundance of 7Li in the solar neighbourhood does not decrease at supersolar metallicity. The comparison of the data with the chemical evolution model predictions favours a scenario in which the majority of the 7Li abundance in meteorites comes from novae. Current data also seem to suggest that the nova rate flattens out at later times. This requirement might have implications for the masses of the white dwarf nova progenitors and deserves further investigation. Neutrino-induced reactions taking place in core-collapse supernovae also produce some fresh lithium. Galactic Archaeology is the study of the formation and evolution of the Milky Way through the properties of stars and stellar populations. The combination of stellar ages, chemical compositions, positions, and velocities can reveal the history of star formation and chemical enrichment in different regions of the Galaxy. A large number of stellar spectroscopic, photometric, and astrometric surveys are currently providing the data necessary to determine the properties of millions of stars spanning almost the entire distance from the Galactic centre to its outskirts. These data do not give stellar ages directly, but ages can be estimated by comparing the surface properties of the stars with models of stellar evolution.This thesis covers the work presented in five papers concerning stellar ages for studies of Galactic Archaeology. In Paper I, we investigate the ages of the Gaia benchmark stars, a sample of 33 nearby stars used as a validation sample in large surveys. By combining new age estimates from model fitting with age estimates found in the literature, we define benchmark ages for 16 of the stars. In Paper III we present a new method for estimating the sample age-metallicity distribution (SAMD) of a population of stars. This method combines the full age-metallicity probability density functions from model fitting of individual stars and is found to yield more precise age distributions than the distribution of individual age estimates.The remaining papers are devoted to the study of the formation history of stellar populations in the Milky Way disc and halo. In Paper II we study the properties of two stellar populations in the halo and find that they formed at the same time more than 10 Gyr ago, but at significantly different metallicities. This is consistent with the prevailing interpretation that the most metal-poor population has been accreted from a dwarf galaxy and that the other population is made up of kinematically hot Milky Way disc stars. In Paper IV we revisit the age distribution of the accreted component and find it to be consistent with a single population of stars with ages in the range 10 to 12 Gyr. We also investigate the properties of a population of stars on retrograde orbits claimed to be accreted from another distinct dwarf galaxy. This population seems to be of a mixed origin as indicated, for example, by a multimodal age distribution. Finally, in Paper V we calculate the SAMD for a sample of almost 200 000 stars in the Milky Way disc. The SAMD shows two local minima, at ages of approximately 5 and 10 Gyr, indicating that the disc stars formed in three main phases. First along a single chemical evolution track in the inner disc until around 10 Gyr ago, then across the disc with outwardly decreasing metallicity, and finally in a burst of star formation 2 to 4 Gyr ago.

We use Gaia DR2 astrometric and line-of-sight velocity information combined with two sets of distances obtained with a Bayesian inference method to study the 3D velocity distribution in the Milky Way disc. We search for variations in all Galactocentric cylindrical velocity components ($V_{\phi}$, $V_R$ and $V_z$) with Galactic radius, azimuth, and distance from the disc mid-plane. We confirm recent work showing that bulk vertical motions in the $R\text{-}z$ plane are consistent with a combination of breathing and bending modes. In the $x\text{-}y$ plane, we show that, although the amplitudes change, the structure produced by these modes is mostly invariant as a function of distance from the plane. Comparing to two different Galactic disc models, we demonstrate that the observed patterns can drastically change in short time intervals, showing the complexity of understanding the origin of vertical perturbations. A strong radial $V_R$ gradient was identified in the inner disc, transitioning smoothly from $16$ km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$ at an azimuth of $30^\circ, Comment: 17 p., 13 fig., accepted MNRAS

[Context] Thanks to ongoing efforts to compute accurate stellar ages, we are able to characterise stars in different regions of the Milky Way. The Gaia and Kepler space-missions, along with ground-based spectroscopic surveys such as APOGEE, provide a unique way to study the chemo-kinematics relations as a function of age through the Galactic stellar populations and provide new constraints to Galactic evolution models. [Aims] We investigate the properties of the double sequences of the Milky Way discs visible in the [α/Fe] versus [Fe/H] diagram, which are usually associated to the chemical thin and thick discs at the solar circle. In the framework of Galactic formation and evolution, we discuss the complex relationships between age, metallicity, [α/Fe], and the radial, azimuthal, and vertical components of the space velocities. [Methods] We study stars with measured chemical and seismic properties from the APOGEE spectroscopic survey and the Kepler satellite, respectively. In addition, astrometry from the Gaia satellite is available for the majority of the sample. We separate the [α/Fe]-[Fe/H] diagram into three stellar populations: the thin disc, the high-α metal-poor thick disc, and the high-α metal-rich thick disc and characterise each of these in the age-chemo-kinematics parameter space. Because of the model-dependent nature of the ages inferred from asteroseismology, and because they depend on the quality of the input spectroscopic information, we compare results obtained from different APOGEE data releases (DR14 and DR16). We also use age determinations from two recent works in the literature. In addition, we use the Besançon stellar populations synthesis model to highlight selection biases and mechanisms (such as mergers and secular evolution) not included in the model. [Results] The thin disc exhibits a flat age-metallicity relation while [α/Fe] increases with stellar age. We confirm no correlation between radial and vertical velocities with [Fe/H], [α/Fe], and age for each stellar population. Considering both samples, Vφ decreases with age for the thin disc, while Vφ increases with age for the high-α metal-poor thick disc. We show that this difference is not due to sample selection. Although the age distribution of the high-α metal-rich thick disc is very close to that of the high-α metal-poor thick disc between 7 and 14 Gyr, its kinematics seems to follow that of the thin disc. This feature, not predicted by the hypotheses included in the Besançon Galaxy Model, suggests a different origin and history for this population. Finally, we show that there is a maximum dispersion of the vertical velocity, σZ, with age for the high-α metal-poor thick disc around 8 Gyr. The analysis of the APOGEE DR16 data suggests the existence of a clear distinction between two sequences of disc stars at different Galactocentric distances in the [$\alpha$/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] abundance ratio space: the so-called high-$\alpha$ sequence, classically associated to an old population of stars in the thick disc, and the low-$\alpha$ sequence, which mostly comprises relatively young stars in the thin disc. We perform a Bayesian analysis based on a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to constrain a multi-zone two-infall chemical evolution model designed for regions at different Galactocentric distances using measured chemical abundances from the APOGEE DR16 sample. An inside-out formation of the Galaxy disc naturally emerges from the best fit of our two-infall chemical-evolution model to APOGEE-DR16: inner Galactic regions are assembled on shorter time-scales compared to the external ones. In the outer disc (with radii $R>6$ kpc), the chemical dilution due to a late accretion event of gas with primordial chemical composition is the main driver of the [Mg/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] abundance pattern in the low-$\alpha$ sequence. In the inner disc, in the framework of the two-infall model, we confirm the presence of an enriched gas infall in the low-$\alpha$ phase as suggested by chemo-dynamical models. Our Bayesian analysis of the recent APOGEE DR16 data suggests a significant delay time, ranging from $\sim$3.0 to 4.7 Gyr, between the first and second gas infall events for all the analyzed Galactocentric regions. Our results propose a clear interpretation of the [Mg/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] relations along the Galactic discs. Recent studies show that the chemical evolution of Sr and Ba in the Galaxy can be explained if different production sites, hosting r- and s-processes, are taken into account. However, the question of unambiguously identifying these sites is still unsolved. Massive stars are shown to play an important role in the production of s-material if rotation is considered. In this work, we study in detail the contribution of rotating massive stars to the production of Sr and Ba, in order to explain their chemical evolution, but also to constrain the rotational behaviour of massive stars. A stochastic chemical evolution model was employed to reproduce the enrichment of the Galactic halo. We developed new methods for model-data comparison which help to objectively compare the stochastic results to the observations. We employed these methods to estimate the value of free parameters which describe the rotation of massive stars, assumed to be dependent on the stellar metallicity. We constrain the parameters using the observations for Sr and Ba. Employing these parameters for rotating massive stars in our stochastic model, we are able to correctly reproduce the chemical evolution of Sr and Ba, but also Y, Zr and La. The data supports a decrease of both the mean rotational velocities and their dispersion with increasing metallicity. Our results show that a metallicity-dependent rotation is a necessary assumption to explain the s-process in massive stars. Spina, L., et al. Open clusters are unique tracers of the history of our own Galaxy's disc. According to our membership analysis based on Gaia astrometry, out of the 226 potential clusters falling in the footprint of the GALactic Archaeology with HERMES (GALAH) survey or the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) survey, we find that 205 have secure members that were observed by at least one of the surveys. Furthermore, members of 134 clusters have high-quality spectroscopic data that we use to determine their chemical composition. We leverage this information to study the chemical distribution throughout the Galactic disc of 21 elements, from C to Eu. The radial metallicity gradient obtained from our analysis is −0.076 ± 0.009 dex kpc, which is in agreement with previous works based on smaller samples. Furthermore, the gradient in the [Fe/H]-guiding radius (r) plane is −0.073 ± 0.008 dex kpc. We show consistently that open clusters trace the distribution of chemical elements throughout the Galactic disc differently than field stars. In particular, at the given radius, open clusters show an age-metallicity relation that has less scatter than field stars. As such scatter is often interpreted as an effect of radial migration, we suggest that these differences are due to the physical selection effect imposed by our Galaxy: clusters that would have migrated significantly also had higher chances to get destroyed. Finally, our results reveal trends in the [X/Fe]-r-age space, which are important to understand production rates of different elements as a function of space and time. Our situation as occupants of the Milky Way (MW) Galaxy, bombarded by the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy, provides an intimate view of physical processes that can lead to the dynamical heating of a galactic disc. While this evolution is instigated by Sagittarius, it is also driven by the intertwined influences of the dark matter halo and the disc itself. We analyse an N-body simulation following a Sagittarius-like galaxy interacting with a MW-like host to disentangle these different influences during the stages of a minor merger. The accelerations in the disc plane from each component are calculated for each snapshot in the simulation, and then decomposed into Fourier series on annuli. The analysis maps quantify and compare the scales of the individual contributions over space and through time: (i) accelerations due to the satellite are only important around disc passages; (ii) the influence around these passages is enhanced and extended by the distortion of the dark matter halo; (iii) the interaction drives disc asymmetries within and perpendicular to the plane and the self-gravity of these distortions increase in importance with time eventually leading to the formation of a bar. These results have interesting implications for identifying different influences within our own Galaxy. Currently, Sagittarius is close enough to a plane crossing to search for localized signatures of its effect at intermediate radii, the distortion of the MW's dark matter halo should leave its imprint in the outer disc and the disc's own self-consistent response is sculpting the intermediate and inner disc. We use the \textsc{astraeus} framework, that couples an N-body simulation with a semi-analytic model for galaxy formation and a semi-numerical model for reionization, to quantify the star formation histories (SFHs) of galaxies in the first billion years. Exploring four models of radiative feedback, we fit the SFH of each galaxy at $z>5$ as $\mathrm{log}(\mathrm{SFR}(z))=-\alpha(1 + z)+\beta$; star formation is deemed stochastic if it deviates from this fit by more than $\Delta_\mathrm{SFR}=0.6\,$dex. Our key findings are: (i) The fraction of stellar mass formed and time spent in the stochastic phase decrease with increasing stellar mass and redshift $z$. While galaxies with stellar masses of $M_\star\sim10^7M_\odot$ at $z\sim5~(10)$ form $\sim70\%~(20\%)$ of their stellar mass in the stochastic phase, this reduces to $ 10^{10}M_\odot$; (ii) the fractional mass assembled and lifetime spent in the stochastic phase do not significantly change with the radiative feedback model used; (iii) at all redshifts, $\alpha$ increases (decreases for the strongest radiative feedback model) with stellar mass for galaxies with $M_\star\lesssim 10^{8.5}M_\odot$ and converges to $\sim0.18$ for more massive galaxies; $\beta$ always increases with stellar mass. Our proposed fits can reliably recover the stellar masses and mass-to-light ratios for galaxies with $M_\star\sim10^{8-10.5}M_\odot$ and $M_{UV}\sim-17~{\rm to}~-23$ at $z\sim 5-9$. [Abridged] Ensemble studies of red-giant stars with exquisite asteroseismic, spectroscopic, and astrometric constraints offer a novel opportunity to recast and address long-standing questions concerning the evolution of stars and of the Galaxy. Here, we infer masses and ages for nearly 5400 giants with available Kepler light curves and APOGEE spectra, and discuss some of the systematics that may affect the accuracy of the inferred stellar properties. First, we look at age-chemical-abundances relations. We find a dearth of young, metal-rich stars, and the existence of a significant population of old (8-9 Gyr), low-[$\alpha$/Fe], super-solar metallicity stars, reminiscent of the age and metallicity of the well-studied open cluster NGC6791. The age-chemo-kinematic properties of these stars indicate that efficient radial migration happens in the thin disk. We find that ages and masses of the nearly 400 $\alpha$-element-rich red-giant-branch (RGB) stars in our sample are compatible with those of an old (~11 Gyr), nearly coeval, chemical-thick disk population. Using a statistical model, we show that 95% of the population was born within ~1.5 Gyr. Moreover, we find a difference in the vertical velocity dispersion between low- and high-[$\alpha$/Fe] populations, confirming their different chemo-dynamical histories. We then exploit the almost coeval $\alpha$-rich population to gain insight into processes that may have altered the mass of a star along its evolution, which are key to improve the mapping of the observed stellar mass to age. We find evidence for a mean integrated RGB mass loss = 0.10 $\pm$ 0.02 Msun and that the occurrence of massive (M $\gtrsim$ 1.1 Msun) $\alpha$-rich stars is of the order of 5% on the RGB, and significantly higher in the RC, supporting the scenario in which most of these stars had undergone interaction with a companion., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A, 26 pages, 24 figures, catalogue available via cds

We report a detailed CO(1-0) survey of a galaxy protocluster field at $z=2.16$, based on 475 hours of observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We constructed a large mosaic of 13 individual pointings, covering an area of 21 arcmin$^2$ and $\pm6500$ km/s range in velocity. We obtain a robust sample of 46 CO(1-0) detections spanning $z=2.09-2.22$, constituting the largest sample of molecular gas measurements in protoclusters to date. The CO emitters show an overdensity at $z=2.12-2.21$, suggesting a galaxy super-protocluster or a protocluster connected to large-scale filaments with ~120 cMpc size. We find that 90% CO emitters have distances $>0'.5-4'$ to the center galaxy, indicating that small area surveys would miss the majority of gas reservoirs in similar structures. Half of the CO emitters have velocities larger than escape velocities, which appears gravitationally unbound to the cluster core. These unbound sources are barely found within the $R_{200}$ radius around the center, which is consistent with a picture in which the cluster core is collapsed while outer regions are still in formation. Compared to other protoclusters, this structure contains relatively more CO emitters with relatively narrow line width and high luminosity, indicating galaxy mergers. We use these CO emitters to place the first constraint on the CO luminosity function and molecular gas density in an overdense environment. The amplitude of the CO luminosity function is 1.6$\pm$0.5 orders of magnitudes higher than observed for field galaxy samples at $z\sim2$, and one order of magnitude higher than predictions for galaxy protoclusters from semi-analytical SHARK models. We derive a high molecular gas density of $0.6-1.3\times10^{9}$ $M_\odot$ cMpc$^{-3}$ for this structure, consistent with predictions for cold gas density of massive structures from hydro-dynamical DIANOGA simulations., 21 pages + Appendices, 9 figures, 6 tables. Context: Galaxies either live in a cluster, a group, or in a field environment. In the hierarchical framework, the group environment bridges the field to the cluster environment, as field galaxies form groups before aggregating into clusters. In principle, environmental mechanisms, such as galaxy–galaxy interactions, can be more efficient in groups than in clusters due to lower velocity dispersion, which lead to changes in the properties of galaxies. This change in properties for group galaxies before entering the cluster environment is known as preprocessing. Whilst cluster and field galaxies are well studied, the extent to which galaxies become preprocessed in the group environment is unclear. Aims: We investigate the structural properties of cluster and group galaxies by studying the Fornax main cluster and the infalling Fornax A group, exploring the effects of galaxy preprocessing in this showcase example. Additionally, we compare the structural complexity of Fornax galaxies to those in the Virgo cluster and in the field. Methods: Our sample consists of 582 galaxies from the Fornax main cluster and Fornax A group. We quantified the light distributions of each galaxy based on a combination of aperture photometry, Sérsic+PSF (point spread function) and multi-component decompositions, and non-parametric measures of morphology. From these analyses, we derived the galaxy colours, structural parameters, non-parametric morphological indices (Concentration C; Asymmetry A, Clumpiness S; Gini G; second order moment of light M₂₀), and structural complexity based on multi-component decompositions. These quantities were then compared between the Fornax main cluster and Fornax A group. The structural complexity of Fornax galaxies were also compared to those in Virgo and in the field. Results: We find significant (Kolmogorov-Smirnov test p-value < α = 0.05) differences in the distributions of quantities derived from Sérsic profiles (g′−r′, r′−i′, Re, and μ̄e,r′), and non-parametric indices (A and S) between the Fornax main cluster and Fornax A group. Fornax A group galaxies are typically bluer, smaller, brighter, and more asymmetric and clumpy. Moreover, we find significant cluster-centric trends with r′−i′, Re, and μ̄e,r′, as well as A, S, G, and M₂₀ for galaxies in the Fornax main cluster. This implies that galaxies falling towards the centre of the Fornax main cluster become fainter, more extended, and generally smoother in their light distribution. Conversely, we do not find significant group-centric trends for Fornax A group galaxies. We find the structural complexity of galaxies (in terms of the number of components required to fit a galaxy) to increase as a function of the absolute r′-band magnitude (and stellar mass), with the largest change occurring between −14 mag ≲Mr′ ≲ −19 mag (7.5 ≲ log₁₀(M*/M⊙) ≲ 9.7). This same trend was found in galaxy samples from the Virgo cluster and in the field, which suggests that the formation or maintenance of morphological structures (e.g., bulges, bar) are largely due to the stellar mass of the galaxies, rather than the environment they reside in.

Using N-body simulations of the Milky Way interacting with a satellite similar to the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy, we quantitatively analyse the vertical response of the Galactic disc to the satellite's repeated impacts. We approximate the vertical distortion of the Galactic disc as the sum of the first three Fourier azimuthal terms m = 0, 1, and 2, and observe their evolution in different dynamical regimes of interaction. After the first interaction, the m = 0 term manifests itself as outgoing ring-like vertical distortions. The m = 1 term (S-shape warp) is prograde when the impacts of the satellite are more frequent, or in general close to an interaction, whereas it is slowly retrograde in the most quiescent phases. The m = 2 term is typically prograde, and close to an interaction it couples with the m = 1 term. Finally, we find that the vertical response of the disc can be recovered in an unbiased way using the instantaneous positions and velocities of stars in a limited volume of the Galactic disc, analogous to real data, and that the measured vertical pattern speeds have a constraining power in the context of a Milky Way-satellite interaction., This work used the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE), which is supported by National Science Foundation (NSF) grant number OCI-1053575. In this paper, we take advantage of the GAlaxy Evolution and Assembly (GAEA) semi-analytic model to analyse the origin of secondary dependencies in the local galaxy mass - gas metallicity relation. Our model reproduces quite well the trends observed in the local Universe as a function of galaxy star formation rate and different gas-mass phases. We show that the cold gas content (whose largest fraction is represented by the atomic gas phase) can be considered as the third parameter governing the scatter of the predicted mass-metallicity relation, in agreement with the most recent observational measurements. The trends can be explained with fluctuations of the gas accretion rates: a decrease of the gas supply leads to an increase of the gas metallicity due to star formation, while an increase of the available cold gas leads to a metallicity depletion. We demonstrate that the former process is responsible for offsets above the mass-metallicity relation, while the latter is responsible for deviations below the mass-metallicity relation. In low and intermediate mass galaxies, these negative offsets are primarily determined by late gas cooling dominated by material that has been previously ejected due to stellar feedback., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures + 1 Appendix. We investigate the evolution of the abundance of fluorine in the Milky Way thick and thin discs by means of detailed chemical evolution models compared with recent observational data. The chemical evolution models adopted here have already been shown to fit the observed abundance patterns of CNO and $\alpha$-elements as well as the metallicity distribution functions for the Galactic thick and thin disc stars. We apply them here to the study of the origin and evolution of fluorine, which is still a matter of debate. First, we study the importance of the various sites proposed for the production of fluorine. Then, we apply the reference models to follow the evolution of the two different Galactic components. We conclude that rotating massive stars are important producers of F and they can set a plateau in F abundance below [Fe/H]=-0.5 dex, though its existence for [Fe/H], Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures. HARPS spectra with signal-to-noise ratios S/N > 600 at 6000 A were analysed with MARCS model atmospheres to obtain 1D LTE abundances of C, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, Sr, and Y for 72 nearby solar-type stars with metallicities in the range -0.3 < [Fe/H] < +0.3 and ASTEC stellar models were used to determine stellar ages from effective temperatures, luminosities obtained via Gaia DR2 parallaxes, and heavy element abundances. The resulting age-metallicity distribution appears to consist of two distinct populations: a sequence of old stars with a steep rise of [Fe/H] to about +0.3 dex at an age of ~7 Gyr and a younger sequence with [Fe/H] increasing from -0.3 dex to about +0.2 dex over the last six Gyr. Furthermore, the trends of several abundance ratios, [O/Fe], [Na/Fe], [Ca/Fe], and [Ni/Fe], as a function of stellar age split into two corresponding sequences. The [Y/Mg]-age relation, on the other hand, shows no offset between the two age sequences and has no significant dependence on [Fe/H], but the components of a visual binary star, zeta Reticuli, have a large and puzzling deviation. The split of the age-metallicity distribution into two sequences may be interpreted as evidence of two episodes of accretion of gas onto the Galactic disk with a quenching of star formation in between. Some of the [X/Fe]-age relations support this scenario but other relations are not so easy to explain, which calls for a deeper study of systematic errors in the derived abundances as a function of [Fe/H], in particular 3D non-LTE effects., 15 pages, 19 figures. We present new spectra obtained using Keck/KCWI and perform kinematics and stellar population analyses of the shell galaxy NGC 474, from both the galaxy centre and a region from the outer shell. We show that both regions have similarly extended star formation histories although with different stellar population properties. The central region of NGC 474 is dominated by intermediate-aged stars (8.3 \pm 0.3 Gyr) with subsolar metallicity ([Z/H]= -0.24 \pm 0.07 dex) while the observed shell region, which hosts a substantial population of younger stars, has a mean luminosity-weighted age of 4.0 \pm 0.5 Gyr with solar metallicities ([Z/H]=-0.03 \pm 0.09 dex). Our results are consistent with a scenario in which NGC 474 experienced a major to intermediate merger with a log\((M_*/M_\odot)\sim10 \) mass satellite galaxy at least \sim 2 Gyr ago which produced its shell system. This work shows that the direct spectroscopic study of low-surface brightness stellar features, such as shells, is now feasible and opens up a new window to understanding galaxy formation and evolution., Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 6 pages, 5 figures

This research was supported in part at KITP by the Heising-Simons Foundation and the National Science Foundation under Grant No. NSF PHY-1748958., We explore the chemodynamical properties of a sample of barred galaxies in the Auriga magnetohydrodynamical cosmological zoom-in simulations, which form boxy/peanut (b/p) bulges, and compare these to the Milky Way (MW). We show that the Auriga galaxies which best reproduce the chemodynamical properties of stellar populations in the MW bulge have quiescent merger histories since redshift z ∼ 3.5: their last major merger occurs at tlookback>12Gyr⁠, while subsequent mergers have a stellar mass ratio of ≤1:20, suggesting an upper limit of a few per cent for the mass ratio of the recently proposed Gaia Sausage/Enceladus merger. These Auriga MW-analogues have a negligible fraction of ex-situ stars in the b/p region (⁠30 per cent) and exhibit X-shaped age and abundance distributions. Examining the discs in our sample, we find that in some cases a star-forming ring forms around the bar, which alters the metallicity of the inner regions of the galaxy. Further out in the disc, bar-induced resonances lead to metal-rich ridges in the Vϕ − r plane – the longest of which is due to the Outer Lindblad Resonance. We explore the fundamental relations governing the radial and vertical velocity dispersions of stars in the Milky Way, from combined studies of complementary surveys including GALAH, LAMOST, APOGEE, the NASA $Kepler$ and K2 missions, and $Gaia$ DR2. We find that different stellar samples, even though they target different tracer populations and employ a variety of age estimation techniques, follow the same set of fundamental relations. We provide the clearest evidence to date that, in addition to the well-known dependence on stellar age, the velocity dispersions of stars depend on orbital angular momentum $L_z$, metallicity and height above the plane $|z|$, and are well described by a multiplicatively separable functional form. The dispersions have a power-law dependence on age with exponents of 0.441$\pm 0.007$ and 0.251$\pm 0.006$ for $\sigma_z$ and $\sigma_R$ respectively, and the power law is valid even for the oldest stars. For the solar neighborhood stars, the apparent break in the power law for older stars, as seen in previous studies, is due to the anti-correlation of $L_z$ with age. The dispersions decrease with increasing $L_z$ until we reach the Sun's orbital angular momentum, after which $\sigma_z$ increases (implying flaring in the outer disc) while $\sigma_R$ flattens. The dispersions increase with decreasing metallicity, suggesting that the dispersions increase with birth radius. The dispersions also increase linearly with $|z|$. Stellar populations in barred galaxies save an imprint of the influence of the bar on the host galaxy's evolution. We present a detailed analysis of star formation histories (SFHs) and chemical enrichment of stellar populations in nine nearby barred galaxies from the TIMER project. We use integral field observations with the MUSE instrument to derive unprecedented spatially resolved maps of stellar ages, metallicities, [Mg/Fe] abundances and SFHs, as well as H$��$ as a tracer of ongoing star formation. We find a characteristic V-shaped signature in the SFH perpendicular to the bar major axis which supports the scenario where intermediate age stars ($\sim 2$-$6\ \mathrm{Gyr}$) are trapped on more elongated orbits shaping a thinner part of the bar, while older stars ($> 8\ \mathrm{Gyr}$) are trapped on less elongated orbits shaping a rounder and thicker part of the bar. We compare our data to state-of-the-art cosmological magneto-hydrodynamical simulations of barred galaxies and show that such V-shaped SFHs arise naturally due to the dynamical influence of the bar on stellar populations with different ages and kinematic properties. Additionally, we find an excess of very young stars ($< 2\ \mathrm{Gyr}$) on the edges of the bars, predominantly on the leading side, confirming typical star formation patterns in bars. Furthermore, mass-weighted age and metallicity gradients are slightly shallower along the bar than in the disc likely due to orbital mixing in the bar. Finally, we find that bars are mostly more metal-rich and less [Mg/Fe]-enhanced than the surrounding discs. We interpret this as a signature that the bar quenches star formation in the inner region of discs, usually referred to as star formation deserts. The decomposition of the Solar system abundances of heavy isotopes into their s- and r- components plays a key role in our understanding of the corresponding nuclear processes and the physics and evolution of their astrophysical sites. We present a new method for determining the s- and r- components of the Solar system abundances, fully consistent with our current understanding of stellar nucleosynthesis and galactic chemical evolution. The method is based on a study of the evolution of the solar neighborhood with a state-of-the-art 1-zone model, using recent yields of low and intermediate mass stars as well as of massive rotating stars. We compare our results with previous studies and we provide tables with the isotopic and elemental contributions of the s- and r-processes to the Solar system composition., 22 pages, 8 figures, to appear in MNRAS

The velocity distribution of stars in the Galactic disc is complex and consists of a vast number of kinematic structures, that is, stars that share similar velocity components. The reasons why some stars move together may be different and are related to dynamical processes connected to the Galaxy, both internal as well as external ones, such as resonances with the Galactic bar or the Galactic spiral arm structure, dissolution of open clusters, or merger events with other galaxies. Therefore, studies of kinematic structures of the Galactic disc may provide information about the formation and evolution history of the Milky Way. In this thesis we focus on detecting and chemo-dynamical characterisation of kinematic structures of the Galactic disc using the most recent and up-to-date astrometric, spectroscopic, and photometric surveys. In Paper I we studied kinematic structures in the solar neighbourhood with the wavelet transform method. In Paper II and Paper III we studied origin of the Arcturus stream and HR 1614 moving group respectively by studying chemo-dynamical properties of the structures.The result of Paper I is the detection of old and well-known kinematic groups together with three new velocity structures. The results of Paper II and Paper III show that both the Arcturus and the HR 1614 structures are composed of thin and thick disc stars and are not dissolved open clusters or accreted stellar populations. We conclude that the origin of kinematic structures is complex and might be a combination of several dynamical processes such as resonances and phase mixing.
