Het is inmiddels een bekend feit dat ontwormingsmiddelen die aan vee worden gegeven, giftig kunnen zijn voor de mestfauna, de insecten die zich met mest voeden en er hun eieren in leggen. Het verdwijnen van bepaalde soorten mestfauna kan er in bepaalde gevallen toe leiden dat de afbraak van mest in het veld vertraagd wordt, zo blijkt uit buitenlandse studies. Enquêtes wezen eerder uit dat ontwormingsmiddelen in veel Nederlandse natuurgebieden worden toegediend aan grote grazers. Komen dit soort ecologische effecten dus ook in onze natuurgebieden voor? Dit is de afgelopen jaren door Alterra onderzocht in opdracht van het ministerie van EL&I.

Black water (toilet water) contains half the load of organic material and the major fraction of the nutrients nitrogen and phosphorus in a household and is 25 times more concentrated, when collected with a vacuum toilet, than the total wastewater stream from a Dutch household. This research focuses on the partial nitritation of anaerobically treated black water to produce an effluent suitable to feed to the anammox process. Successful partial nitritation was achieved at 34 degrees C and 25 degrees C and for a long period (almost 400 days in the second period at 25 degrees C) without strict process control a stable effluent at a ratio of 1.3 NO(2)-N/NH(4)-N was produced which is suitable to feed to the anammox process. Nitrite oxidizers were successfully outcompeted due to inhibition by free ammonia and nitrous acid and due to fluctuating conditions in SRT (1.0-17 days) and pH (from 6.3 to 7.7) in the reactor. Microbial analysis of the sludge confirmed the presence of mainly ammonium oxidizers. The emission of nitrous oxide (N(2)O) is of growing concern and it corresponded to 0.6-2.6% (average 1.9%) of the total nitrogen load.

In commercial broiler farms, birds are usually housed on litter, composed of bedding materials like wood shavings. Wet litter is a condition in which the litter reaches its saturation threshold for water and cannot hold more moisture. It causes increased microbial activity and, as a result, ammonia is produced and emitted into the air. Wet litter can result in negative welfare issues (e.g., footpad dermatitis) and also a reduced performance. Wet litter is a multifactorial problem, involving management, housing, disease, diet, and gut health factors. In this thesis, nutritional aspects on excreta moisture content were studied in four different experiments. Different dietary compositions were evaluated and the results show that reductions in excreta water content were related to increased transit time and/or reduced water reabsorption in the hindgut. Insoluble fibers, if they are combined with a coarse diet, can be used to slow down transit time and optimize digestibility, thereby improving both excreta and litter quality. Minerals (e.g., Mg) and other undigested nutrients increase the osmotic load of the digesta in the hindgut and, as a result, more water is moving into the gut lumen. Changing the type or level of nutrients that reach the hindgut by varying dietary ingredients (medium-chain fatty acids, nonstarch polysaccharides, and starch) had limited effects on the ileal microbiota composition. Additionally, no effects of variations in commensal bacteria and excreta quality were observed. In this thesis, different parameters to assess the status of water in excreta and litter samples were evaluated. Water in the excreta or litter can be present in free form or bound, therefore solely total moisture content may not be sufficient to describe excreta and litter quality. Water activity correlates well with microbial growth. However, its use is limited in high moisture (> 30%) content samples. Free water, even though this parameter is dependent of the centrifugal speed applied, seems to be a more valuable parameter to assess excreta quality. The results from this thesis show that nutrition can be used to manipulate excreta and litter moisture content. The effects of nutritional manipulation can be related to (in)digestibility of nutrients, although transit time also seems to be an important factor determining excreta moisture output. Current feed strategies need to aim at optimizing the gastro-intestinal tract functions via the diet. Besides assessment of litter quality, also monitoring excreta quality throughout the growing period is highly recommended for managing litter quality, broiler health, and environmental impact. This should not be limited to measuring total excreta moisture, as the results of this thesis show that the status of the water in the excreta can be different.

Umicore Zinc Chemicals developed zinc oxide products with different mean particle sizes. Tussen de vleesvarkensbedrijven worden veel verschillen in excreties waargenomen. Het blijkt dat het voeren van bijproducten een positieve invloed heeft op het verlagen van de excretie

Leidt het gebruik van ontwormingsmiddelen bij grote grazers nu wel of niet tot `dode koeienflatsen¿? De deskundigen zijn het er niet over eens. Opvallend is dat de discussie altijd plaatsvond op basis van losse observaties en meningen. Er was in Nederland tot op heden nauwelijks echt onderzoek gedaan naar deze problematiek. Daar is nu verandering in gekomen. Een enquête onder terreinbeheerders door het Wageningse onderzoeksinstituut Alterra toont aan dat de toediening van ontwormingsmiddelen aan grote grazers in natuurgebieden wijdverspreid is. En de eerste metingen in mest van behandelde dieren laten zien dat dit gebruik ook daadwerkelijk leidt tot niveaus van dit soort stoffen die schadelijk zijn voor mestfauna.

The effect of northern European seasonal temperature changes and low temperature on the performance of upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB)-septic tanks treating black water was studied. Three UASB-septic tanks were monitored with different operational parameters and at different temperatures. The results indicated the feasibility of the UASB-septic tank for (pre)treatment of black water at low temperatures with respect to removal of suspended solids and dissolved organic material. Inoculum sludge had little effect on COD(ss) removal, though in the start-up phase some poorly adapted inoculum disintegrated and washed out, thus requiring consideration when designing the process. Removal of COD(dis) was at first negative, but improved as the sludge adapted to low temperature. The UASB-septic tank alone did not comply with Finnish or Dutch treatment requirements and should therefore be considered mainly as a pre-treatment method. However, measuring the requirements as mgCOD l(-1) may not always be the best method, as the volume of the effluent discharged is also an important factor in the final amount of COD entering the receiving water bodies.

Op Praktijkcentrum Sterksel is onderzocht wat het effect is op de reproductieresultaten, levensduur, gezondheid en berekende stikstof- en fosforuitscheiding als drachtige zeugen gedurende de eerste vier pariteiten minder stikstof en fosfor (via fasenvoedering) krijgen. In totaal zijn 185 dekrijpe opfokzeugen ingezet die vier worpen gevolgd zijn. De zeugen waren tijdens de dracht gehuisvest in voerligboxen met uitloop of in groepshuisvesting met voerstation. De belangrijkste conclusies uit het onderzijk zijn: Fasenvoedering tijdens de dracht verhoogt het percentage terugkomers bij zeugen van pariteit 1 en 2 maar niet bij oudere zeugen. Er is geen effect van fasenvoedering op de overige reproductiekenmerken. Fasenvoedering reduceert de stikstof- en fosforuitscheiding met 4,5% per gemiddeld aanwezige zeug per jaar
