This article examines the intensification and extensification of working time among IT workers. As standardised hours have become increasingly eroded, understanding the nuanced experience of re-configured working time becomes vital. Informed by conceptual distinctions between clock time, process time and tertiary time, this study investigates how working time is constituted among, and experienced by, two distinct IT occupational categories: support workers and mobile apps developers. Theorising experiences of working time with recourse to distinct logics of production, which encompass and reflect labour markets, new technology product markets and occupational communities, illuminates how working time experiences are shaped. This facilitates an explanation of the underlying dynamics that surround the interaction between the three concepts of time, which advances our understanding of intensification and extensification. The demand for cassava tuber in Indonesia is high, however, domestic production is still limited therefore increasing production is important. Ultisol soils have the potential for cassava production, but low soil fertility in such soils needs to be improved. The research aimed to evaluate the effect of soil organic carbon (SOC) and NPK fertilizer on the growth and yield of cassava tuber in an ultisol. The experiment was conducted at the Jonggol Experimental Farm, IPB Bogor, West Java from September 2022 to January 2023. The experiment used a split-plot design with three replications. The main plot was SOC level of 1.93 (control), 2, 3, and 4%, and the subplot was NPK 15-15-15 level of 150, 300, 450, and 600 kg ha-1. SOC level was increased through the application of cow manure 0, 3.59, 54.93, and 106.27 tons ha-1 corresponding to SOC levels of 1.93 (control), 2, 3, and 4%, respectively. Results showed that enhancing SOC up to 3% and NPK 300 kg ha-1 were enough to support cassava growth as shown by plant height, stem diameter, and leaf number. The leaf number was the highest in the 3% SOC+150 kg NPK, 2% SOC+300 kg NPK or+450 kg NPK, and control+600 kg ha-1 NPK treatment. Leaf greenness was only affected by adding NPK fertilizer; a high greenness value was obtained at NPK level of > 150 kg ha-1 and 300 to 600 kg ha-1 resulting in non-significantly leaf greenness. The status of N and K in the leaves increased by SOC and NPK treatments, while the P status was unaffected. SOC at a level of 3% and NPK at a level of 150 kg ha-1 stimulated cassava to produce the highest fresh tuber weight (1.85 kg per plant) at 4 months after planting. Cassava productivity in ultisol soil can be increased by applying cow manure of 54.93 tons ha-1 to enhance SOC up to 3% combined with NPK of 150 kg ha-1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Depopulation often leads to the abandonment of agricultural land and the resulting process of afforestation and reforestation. In this paper, we study the land use changes between 2000 and 2018 in two Spanish provinces, Soria and Teruel. The provinces chosen as case studies are of particular interest because they have some of the lowest population densities in Europe and continue to suffer depopulation processes that have been ongoing since the mid-20th century. The reasons for this are not immediately clear given that unlike other European regions with similar population density values, for example in Northern Scandinavia, they are not exposed to extreme climatic conditions, nor are they located in isolated mountain regions. Using the CORINE Land Cover database, we observed that in both provinces, there has been an expansion in shrub and forest land uses and a decline in agriculture due largely to the fact that certain areas have been abandoned by their inhabitants, although in other parts of these provinces, the amount of land used for agriculture has increased. Urban growth over this period has been minimal. In the coming years, it seems likely that the population of these areas will continue to fall, given that the policies carried out over decades to try to revert this trend have not been successful. This study examined absorbed organic residues in pottery to assess differences in subsistence practices in Roman Britain. Through this approach, we investigated foodways at a major urban site and a range of small towns, villas and farmsteads within its hinterland. The study revealed that consumption at Cirencester differed remarkably to consumption at other sites in the surrounding hinterland, with a greater contribution from pigs and/or chickens. Dairy products were a key contributor to the diet at rural sites, including a high-status villa. We contend that both findings are the result of extensification of food production. Thus, we show how reconstructing broad culinary patterns can reveal possible responses of inhabitants to the challenges of feeding the increasing population of Roman Britain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

griculture has been recognized as an important sector in Indonesia. In addition to providing food and industrial raw materials, it contributes significantly to the growth of gross domestic product (GDP), foreign exchange, employment, and rural household income. One of the important triggers for the decline in harvested area and rice production in Musi Rawas Regency is the decline in rice field area due to the conversion of rice fields to non-rice fields. Conflicts over water resources vary from one area to another because water is not evenly distributed both in space and time. Therefore, this paper describes changes in the household population of rice farmers and changes in the population of aquaculture farmers in Musi Rawas Regency. This research was conducted using quantitative methods through a descriptive observational approach to secondary data obtained from the Government of Musi Rawas Regency, South Sumatra Province, Indonesia. The distribution of descriptive data was analyzed univariately using the SPSS Statistic 25.0 application. The area of rice fields increased from 2019 to 2021, followed by the number of farmers which also increased. The area of aquaculture is relatively stable in 2020 and 2021 and has increased compared to 2019. Meanwhile, aquaculture households from 2019 to 2021 continue to increase. he findings indicate the expansion of new rice fields (extensification) due to the need for new rice fields due to the increase in the population of farmers. The population of fish farmers is increasing even though the fishery area is constant. This condition indicates the fragmentation of fishery land.

Critical land in Indonesia is the result of weather disturbances, natural disasters, farming behavior without considering the preservation of nature, and the unwise use of chemical fertilizers. Critical land tends to be acidic and has a soil structure that does not support cultivation. Coffee plants are flexible plants, and their root systems and ecology can improve soil structure. The need for coffee at home and abroad tends to increase along with the development of coffee consumption as a lifestyle for Generation Z (Gen-Z). The economic value of coffee, which tends to increase, opens the insight of farmers to continue to develop this coffee plantation area. In the development of planting areas, knowledge of critical land optimization is needed, which is a principal factor as the basis for implementing critical land extensification. For this reason, the purpose of this study was to determine the level of knowledge of farmers on optimizing critical land into strategic land and efforts to develop coffee agribusiness in critical land. This study used a quantitative descriptive method and used the SmartPLS3 analysis tool. The results showed that internal factors, external factors, and motivation of farmers affect the level of knowledge about optimization of critical land, critical land management must meet ecological conservation and improve the community's economy in a structured manner, the extensification of critical land using coffee plants is one of the strategic steps for critical land optimization, as well as the development of coffee agribusiness, both seeds and waste as an effort to increase farmers' income.

This study investigates the impact of agricultural marketing program on smallholder investment behavior. The study is based on cross-sectional household data from a survey of 507 smallholder maize farmers from rural communities in Ghana. The study employed propensity score matching (PSM) to estimate the average treatment effect of the marketing program on farmers’ investment behavior. The results show that smallholder farmers’ participation in buffer stock marketing program is influenced positively by gender, transportation cost and access to extension service and negatively by marital status among others. Overall, the results show that the buffer stock marketing program has positive impacts on smallholder farmers’ investment behavior of increasing input usage, farm expansion and yield smallholder farmers. However, the highest impact is on farm expansion. The results of the study reveal that the marketing program stimulates investment in farm size expansion more than in inputs usage. To derive the most impact from the program, a possible review of the program could look at strategy of focusing on the implementation of the program in rural areas rather than in peri-urban areas where land access is more constrained. This study contributes to a better understanding of f farmers’ investment behavior of input usage and farm expansion. This knowledge could help policymakers and development organizations shape future interventions for increased uptake.

Literary works can be used as a means of caring for the earth. Nature is seen as an object so that human treatment of nature does not provide reciprocity. nature is gradually being degraded. Thus, this study focuses on discussing literary works related to the issue of nature being exploited through the agricultural system. The purpose of this study is to reveal what environmental problems are represented in the novel Kailasa by Jusuf AN as a form of ecocriticism. The eco-critical theory which is based on Cheryll Goltfelty's view is used as a reference in discussing the problem of the relationship between literature and the physical environment. Ecocriticism views the basic relationship that all human culture is connected to the physical world, influencing and being influenced by both the biosphere and the ecosphere. The method used is descriptive qualitative method. The result identifies that anthropocentrism causes exploitation of nature and environment in Kailasa. It also identifies that the Kailasa community experienced a change in eco-consciousness to ego-consciousness; the change was motivated by a material-oriented life for economic purposes.

Agrosilvopastoral systems are multifunctional, complex, and knowledge-intensive systems with the potential to deliver multiple ecosystem services. However, their future is hindered by socio-ecological factors which influence the dynamics of the associated landscapes by modifying how the natural resources are used over time and across the territory. An integrated analysis of the most influential factors and the associated dynamics urges due to the strategic potential of these systems to provide locally adapted ecosystem services to face both local and global challenges. We investigated the changes in the demography, productive activities and the strategies of land use, and how they influenced the landscape dynamics, in the Redes Biosphere Reserve. Datasets with demographic, socioeconomic, and landscape parameters from 1956, 1985, and 2016 were created. Landscape metrics were calculated for the whole Reserve and for six areas covering the bioclimatic variability. Historical data, interviews with the local population, and repeated images were used to reconstruct the land uses and the landscape maps in each period. The number of inhabitants declined 60% from 1956 to 2016, and only 4.7% are less than 15 years old nowadays. The human group’s capacity to maintain sustainable and productive activities is highly questionable. During the same period, the number of farms decreased by 80% and the herds evolved from multispecific (63% cattle and 37% small ruminants) to monospecific ones (around 88% cattle). The complex land management strategies simplified: subsistence agriculture almost disappeared and the diversity of livestock and agroforestry strategies also decreased. The landscape metrics revealed the most drastic changes in the lowlands associated with the construction of two water reservoirs and the disappearance of croplands and open chestnut forests. At middle altitudes, around 43% of the hay meadows disappeared and the remaining grasslands are only grazed, whereas grazed grasslands declined by 77% at the highest altitudes. Two drivers repeated across the three bioclimatic scenarios: expansion of dense woodlands (average 220%) and shrublands (295%). All these changes led to the reduction of the landscape diversity and the simplification of the mosaic, with possible environmental implications. Integrated approaches including environmental and socioeconomic measures are needed to preserve the landscapes and associated services.

DYNAMICS OF RURAL HOUSEHOLDS LIVELIHOOD STRATEGY IN FACING THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC. The life of rural communities is always faced with various vulnerabilities threatening their livelihoods. The vulnerability in this context refers to the Covid-19 pandemic. This pandemic has caused many community members to lose their sources of income while they are also faced with increasing and varied household needs. For this reason, they are required to be able to find new sources of income so that the needs of their household can be met. Income intensification and extensification are the ways they can take as a livelihood strategy. The purpose of this community service is to identify and describe the dynamics of livelihood strategies carried out by the rural households in dealing with the impact of Covid-19 in negeri Passo, Ambon City. The method used to achieve this goal is by combining socialization and training. The results are in the form of identification of problems, solutions and potentials of the kampung mama negeri Passo community. Furthermore, the community has various potentials to be developed but are limited by the access to assets. On the other hand, the negeri Passo community also has a social capital in the form of a “masohi” (gotong-royong) spirit to get out of the vulnerabilities that limit their livelihoods together. Their various potentials can be developed to obtain economic benefits as a household livelihood strategy by providing a concrete motivation.

Permanent grasslands (PG) provide multifunctional ecosystem services (ES) in Europe and globally, which are threatened by both increased farming intensity and land use change in marginal areas. Farm management decisions can represent critical thresholds, or behavioural "tipping points", in the agricultural system. Decisions are influenced by a combination of agronomic, policy and social factors. Transformation of PG systems can be facilitated through positive tipping points and relevant policy implementation to ensure sustainable PG systems. The aim of this research was to understand the drivers of decisions regarding land use changes and management towards critical positive and negative tipping points across five biogeographic zones in Europe. Interview methodology assessed farmers' preferences and priorities regarding the adoption of sustainable PG systems. Participants were selected from five case study countries, each representing a different biogeographic zone in Europe (Continental/Pannonian: Czech Republic, Boreal: Sweden, Mediterranean: Spain, Alpine: Switzerland, and Atlantic: UK). The sample also covered three farming intensity types within these biogeographic zones: high input/intensive conventional farms (≥1.0 LU/ha); low input/extensive conventional farms (<1.0 LU/ha); and certified organic farms. In total, 373 farm interviews were obtained from the case study countries between October 2020 and October 2021. The analysis focuses on drivers of change and considers tipping points across these countries, considering case studies of land use changes (specifically land abandonment) and land management practices (specifically changes in stocking rates). The most common reasons for PG management changes towards either intensification or extensification were economic. Farmers require policy support to increase provision of non-market ES, while rebalancing subsidies can deliver environmental ES at scale through abandonment (e.g., through the creation of specific habitats that support some threatened species). Agri-environment schemes (AES)and subsidies could be more flexible to allow farmers to better adapt grassland management to local production conditions and unpredictable circumstances such as droughts, floods, or market shocks. To maintain PG that delivers more goods and services, financial compensation for ES delivery was perceived to be the most significant support mechanism needed, while easier access to ES provision expertise through extension or consultancy services is considered important factor. • Farmers' decisions can be understood as critical thresholds, or behavioural tipping points. • Farmers require financial incentives and technical guidance to trigger positive tipping points. • Changes to agri-environmental schemes and subsidy programmes are needed to deliver more ES from PG • Other decision drivers include personal values, (perceived) agronomic barriers, and consumer demand. • Land use/management change should be appropriate, context-specific and align with farming values. Agri-environment schemes are a key mechanism by which agricultural sustainability is encouraged by subsidising farmers to adopt environmentally friendly management (e.g. reduction of inputs) to maintain and enhance the delivery of biodiversity-associated ecosystem services. Studies testing the efficacy of agri-environment schemes have yielded varying results, and few have focused on upland (marginal or Less Favoured Area) grassland (> 150 m above sea level) where productivity is poor. This study used a factorial field experiment to examine patterns in plant communities and terrestrial invertebrates between agri-environment scheme and conventionally managed semi-improved and improved upland grasslands, using 90 spatially paired fields. Total plant species richness and rare plant species richness (those with < 10% occurrence) were unaffected by agri-environment scheme management, but were significantly higher on semi-improved than improved grasslands. Total and rare invertebrate abundance and family-level richness were unrelated to grassland type (semi-improved or improved). Total and rare invertebrate abundances were 4% and 218% higher, and total and rare invertebrate family-level richness were 17% and 14% higher in agri-environment scheme than conventionally managed fields, respectively. Here, we show that agri-environment scheme management of marginal or Less Favoured Area upland grassland was associated with higher multi-taxa invertebrate abundance and richness associated with swards indicative of wetter conditions with lower dominance of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and greater coverage of other native grass species compared to conventional management. This suggests that agri-environment schemes may maintain, enhance or offset declines in terrestrial invertebrates and their associated ecosystem service delivery by maintaining more diverse swards, and suggests that they make a positive contribution to biodiversity conservation. Local own-source revenue is a significant element of the implementation of regional autonomy. The local own-source revenue of a region is impactful to the region’s self-reliance in financing the development program for public needs. The present study is aimed to investigate the effect of intensification and extensification of retribution tax on local own-source revenue in Gorontalo city. A qualitative method and ex-post-facto approach were employed in this research. The results showed that the intensification and extensification of retribution tax are influential to the local ownsource revenue. All in all, the research implications suggest for the regional development to optimize the regional finance potentials by the program of intensification and extensification. An increase in local own-source revenue will improve the region’s capacity to implement governance and apply financial autonomy from the central government. Following a cradle-to-farm-gate approach, we determined the input of fossil energy and greenhouse gas emissions (GGE) for conventional and agroforestry land use on a farm in a low profit region of Germany. On the basis of a calculation model with a recurring crop rotation of maize, rye, oat, and a catch crop mixture, it was found that a short rotation alley cropping system (SRACS) with a 10% (A10) and a 40% (A40) tree area for bioenergy production consumed 7% and 32% less fossil energy than the conventionally managed site (C). Simultaneously, the net energy gains and energy efficiency of the plant production process were increased by up to 8 and 53%, respectively. Likewise, the operational GGE accumulated to 3.1 Mg ha−1 yr−1 under C farming and could be reduced by 9% and 36% in A10 and A40, respectively. Overall, a multidimensional land use indicator comparison proved that under specific site conditions agroforestry land use can increase the energy output per unit of land area, while the energy input and GGE per metric ton of biomass yield were considerably lower than in C farming. Nominal range sensitivity analysis revealed that the energetic and ecological performance of the system was highly sensitive to the size and productivity of the tree area as well as to the use of fertilisers. Our findings suggest that SRACS may fundamentally improve the environmental and energetic performance of the cultivation process on marginal land, without leading to substantial losses in agricultural livestock production area. This article examines strategies adopted by Maasai and other pastoralists in Kenya to adapt to climate change, population growth, land loss, decreasing livestock holdings and land degradation, aimed at achieving greater socio-economic resilience. Using case studies mostly from Narok County and reviewing the increasingly rich literature on pastoralism and conservation in East Africa, we show that pastoralists employ three main strategies to adapt their livelihood systems: intensification (changes in land use systems to increase productivity per hectare); extensification (through territorial expansion into unoccupied areas or territories of neighbouring communities in our cases); and diversification (the combination of pastoralism with other livelihood strategies, mainly farming, conservation, tourism, business and wage jobs, often through migration to small towns or urban centres). Maasai communities have been quick to adopt these strategies, individually or in combination, in order to overcome ecological and socio-economic stress and to pursue opportunities as they arise. Since these strategies are generally compatible with extensive pastoralism, this land use will continue to play a key role in sustaining the livelihoods of people living in semi-arid and arid rangelands. However, when intensification and diversification through the adoption of ranching and farming occur, the rangeland becomes fragmented, with severe impacts on wildlife. In such cases, incentives for sustaining conservation and wildlife tourism will need to increase to compensate land holders for foregoing these more intensive land uses, thus moving towards reconciliation of ecological sustainability and strengthened livelihoods. These findings are illuminated by Gunderson and Holling's (2002) panarchy model and its nested adaptive cycles, where resilience is achieved by providing for change through loosening and reorganising connections between elements in the system. A life cycle assessment (LCA) study of a transition from semiintensive to semi-extensive Mediterranean dairy sheep farm suggests that the latter has a strong potential for offsetting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through the soil C sequestration (Cseq) in permanent grasslands. The extensification process shows clear environmental advantage when emission intensity is referred to the area-based functional unit (FU). Several LCA studies reported that extensive livestock systems have greater GHG emissions per mass of product than intensive one, due to their lower productivity. However, these studies did not account for soil Cseq of temporary and permanent grasslands, that have a strong potential to partly mitigate the GHG balance of ruminant production systems. Our LCA study was carried out considering the transition from a semiintensive (SI) towards a semi-extensive (SE) production system, adopted in a dairy sheep farm located in North-Western Sardinia (Italy). Impact scope included enteric methane emissions, feed production, on-farm energy use and transportation, infrastructures as well as the potential C sink from soil Cseq compared to emission intensity. In order to provide a more comprehensive analysis, we used the following FUs: 1 kg of fat and protein corrected milk (FPCM) and 1 ha of utilised agricultural area (UAA). We observed that the extensification of production system determined contrasting environmental effects when using different FUs accounting for soil Cseq. When soil Cseq in emission intensity estimate was included, we observed slightly lower values of GHG emissions per kg of FPCM in the SI production system (from 3.37 to 3.12 kg CO2 equivalents - CO2-eq), whereas a greater variation we observed in the SE one (from 3.54 to 2.90 kg CO2-eq). Considering 1 ha of UAA as FU and including the soil Cseq, the emission intensity in SI moved from 6257 to 5793 kg CO2-eq, whereas values varied from 4020 to 3299 kg CO2-eq in SE. These results indicated that the emission intensity from semi-extensive Mediterranean dairy sheep farms can be considerably reduced through the soil Cseq, although its measurement is influenced by the models used in the estimation. The extensification process shows clear environmental advantage when emission intensity is referred to the area-based functional unit (FU). Several LCA studies reported that extensive livestock systems have greater GHG emissions per mass of product than intensive one, due to their lower productivity. However, these studies did not account for soil Cseq of temporary and permanent grasslands, that have a strong potential to partly mitigate the GHG balance of ruminant production systems. Our LCA study was carried out considering the transition from a semi-intensive (SI) towards a semi-extensive (SE) production system, adopted in a dairy sheep farm located in North-Western Sardinia (Italy). Impact scope included enteric methane emissions, feed production, on-farm energy use and transportation, infrastructures as well as the potential C sink arising from soil Cseqwith respect to the emission intensity. In order to provide a more comprehensive analysis, we used the following FUs: 1 kg of fat and protein corrected milk (FPCM) and 1 ha of utilised agricultural area (UAA). We observed that the extensification of production system determined contrasting environmental effects when using different FUs accounting for soil Cseq. When soil Cseq in emission intensity estimate was included, we observed slightly lower values of GHG emissions per kg of FPCM in the SI production system (from 3.37 to 3.12 kg CO2 equivalents – CO2-eq), whereas a greater variation we observed in the SE one (from 3.54 to 2.90 kg CO2-eq). Considering 1 ha of UAA as FU and including the soil Cseq, the emission intensity in SI moved from 6,257 to 5,793 kg CO2-eq, whereas values varied from 4,020 to 3,299 kg CO2-eq in SE. These results indicated that the emission intensity from semi-extensive Mediterranean dairy sheep farms can be considerably reduced through the soil Cseq, although its measurement is influenced by the models used in the estimation.

In monetary autonomy, Surabaya government expects to increase its province earnings. As the government regulation number 22 in 1999 (the newest is number 32 in 2004), Surabaya government has a privilege autonomy in considering the intensification and extensification to support its province earnings for economical development. This research intends to get a real proof on implementation of intensification and extensification for province and also to get the real proof on regional economic development and the growing of earning grade after the application of newest regulation number 32 in 2004. This is a qualitative research by taking data from BPS office in Surabaya, on 10 June 2005 and from Surabaya financial department. And the results show that the new regulation can increase the province earnings by implementing intensification (tax of bill and retribution) of an area which is stated. And after the rule was issued can increase the amount of infestations. So these support the growing economic grade and infestation season around east Java regions especially in Surabaya city

The study identifies trends in changes of the intensity of agricultural production in terms of nitrogenmanagement. A comparative analysis of the character and kinds of nitrogen management at the voivodshiplevel concerned the period 2002-2015. The analysis included a comparison of balances and use efficiency ofgross nitrogen, as well as the pace and direction of the trend of inputs and outputs in the cycle of agriculturalproduction. The structural and quantitative analysis of both sides of the gross nitrogen balance provides alot of information about the conditions of agricultural production in the aspect of nitrogen management.While the intensification of plant production is moderate (type A =) in the scale of the country, there aresignificant differences among individual regions of Poland. In terms of agro-environmental assessment andnitrogen management types, the Lubuskie, Warmińsko-Mazurskie and Zachodniopomorskie voivodeshipsstood out positively.

There is an enormous body of literature on the population growth that sub-Saharan Africa witnessed over the course of the past few decades. The majority of these works argue that reducing birth rates is an essential step in the fight against poverty, and that policy of a fertility reduction is necessary these contexts. And, though the term of « overpopulation » is rarely used explicitly, it is nevertheless this neo-Malthusian impulse that undergirds the mechanical association of population growth and the reduction of land resources.Despite these arguments, several sub-Saharan African countries and regions have led successful campaigns to absorb this population growth without seeing a threat to their food security. Furthermore, one could argue that it is thanks to the diverse responses of rural communities to population growth that the « urban explosion » in African cities has been able to partially contained. This case study, conducted in Koumbia, attempts to show how this region of Burkina Faso has been able to successfully absorb a sustained growth in population resulting both from natural growth as well as significant immigration of both mossi and fulani ethnic groups into the region. We observe that the increase in population density has led to a double process of both intensification (much like Esther Boserup’s analysis) and extensification (such as clearing new lands to make way for agriculture).

A shortage of available livestock for utilizing grassland biomass in Central Europe is challenging for the management of both semi‐natural grasslands and previously intensified (limed, fertilized and reseeded) upland grasslands. An alternative method of grassland management is mulching, in which aboveground biomass is cut, crushed and subsequently spread on the surface. This paper reports on an experiment to compare three different mulching frequencies (one, two and three times per year) with an unmanaged treatment and traditional management of two cuts per year (control) on a previously improved upland meadow. Plant species composition was monitored over 13 years. Traditional management of two cuts with biomass removal was the most suitable method for maintaining plant species richness and diversity, and both were reduced significantly in the once‐mulched and especially in the unmanaged treatment. Tall dicotyledonous weeds such as Urtica dioica, Cirsium arvense and Aegopodium podagraria were promoted by the unmanaged treatment and by mulching once a year. Higher frequency of defoliation had positive effects on the spread of short forbs such as Taraxacum spp., Plantago lanceolata and Trifolium repens. After eight years, there were changes in sward structure in the unmanaged and mulched‐once‐a‐year treatments, with increase in the tall/short species ratio. In conclusion, repeated mulching cannot substitute fully for traditional two‐cut management in improved upland meadows without decreasing plant species richness and diversity, and changing the sward structure. Although mulching once a year may prevent invasion by shrubs and trees, it also supports the spread of weedy species similar to no management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigated the role of labour in explaining the yield gap of cereals at both crop and farm levels on smallholder farms in Southern Ethiopia. A household survey containing detailed information of labour use at crop and farm level of ca. 100 farms in a maize-based system around Hawassa and ca. 100 farms in a wheat-based system around Asella was used for this purpose. Stochastic frontier analysis was combined with the principles of production ecology to decompose maize and wheat yield gaps. Actual maize and wheat yields were on average 1.6 and 2.6 t ha−1, respectively, which correspond to 23 and 26% of the water-limited yield (Yw) of each crop. For both crops, nearly half of the yield gap was attributed to the technology yield gap, indicating sub-optimal crop management to achieve Yw even for the farmers with the highest yields. The efficiency yield gap was ca. 20% of Yw for both crops; it was negatively associated with sowing date and with the proportion of women's labour used for sowing in the case of maize but with the proportion of hired labour used for sowing and weed control in the case of wheat. The resource yield gap was less than 10% of Yw for both crops due to small differences in input use between highest- and lowest-yielding farms. The contribution of capital and farm power availability to crop yields, input use and labour use was analysed at the farm level. Labour calendars showed that crops cultivated in Hawassa were complementary, with peak labour occurring at different times of the year. By contrast, crops cultivated in Asella competed strongly for labour during sowing, hand-weeding and harvesting months, resulting in potential trade-offs at farm level. Oxen ownership was associated with capital availability, but not farm power in Hawassa and with both capital availability and farm power in Asella. Farmers with more oxen applied more nitrogen (N) to maize in Hawassa and cultivated more land in Asella, which is indicative of an intensification pathway in the former and an extensification pathway in the latter. Differences in land:labour ratio and in the types of crops cultivated explained the different strategies used in the two sites. In both sites, although gross margin per unit area increased linearly with increasing crop yield and farm N productivity, gross margin per labour unit increased up to an optimal level of crop yield and farm N productivity after which no further response was observed. This suggests that narrowing the yield gap may not be economically rational in terms of labour productivity. We conclude that labour (and farm power) is not a major determinant of maize yield gaps in Hawassa, but is a major determinant of wheat yield gaps in Asella. • Labour calendars reveal competition for labour in Asella, but not in Hawassa. • Yield gaps for maize and wheat in Southern Ethiopia are around 80% of Yw. • The technology yield gap explains nearly half of the yield gap of both crops. • Lack of capital hinders maize intensification in Hawassa; access to farm power wheat intensification in Asella. • Labour is a major limiting factor in some African smallholder farming systems. The article analyses changes in wine-growing areas in the area of wine-growing districts and subdistricts in Slovenia in the period 2000-2019. Viticulture has represented an important sector in Slovenian farms since the ancient age. In recent decades, wine-growing is associated with a tourism. Wine-growing areas are shrinking everywhere, and the problem is the growing age of vineyards, as their renovation is linked to high costs. There are significant differences between wine-growing districts and subdistricts in Slovenia in the stages of the abandonment of winegrowing areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research was conducted to see how perceptions tax extensification and intensification programe, tax identification number (NPWP), with sunset policy to tax compliance to the respondent an individual tax payer and the entity that reported as many as 250 tax on each KPP Pratama Yogyakarta, Sleman, wonosari, Wates, and Bantul taken by simple random sampling method. Data analysis using an analytical approach to structural equation models (SEM) software using partial least square (PLS). Test results that the perception of tax extensification and intensification programe, NPWP with facility sunset policy that has been applied by the Directorate General of Taxes has not impacted significantly to tax compliance with t-statistic value of each (0.70, 0098, 0.436) (1.645). Test results that the perception of tax extensification and intensification programe has been implemented by the Directorate General of taxes can have a positive impact on facility sunset policy with t-statistics value of each of (1.742, 2.211)> t-table (1.645). Test results that with the addition of NPWP provided by the Directorate General of Taxes can have a positive impact on tax compliance to the value of t-statistic (2.313)> t-table (1.645). The perception of tax extensification programe and facilities sunset policy that have been implemented by the Directorate General of Taxes can have a positive impact on the addition NPWP with t-statistics value of each of (1.929, 2.626)> t-table (1.645). The programs and facilities as well as NPWP implemented by Directorate General of Taxes should be increased and expanded again to the awareness of taxpayers in tax compliance to boost significantly impact (voluntary compliance)

The purpose of this research is to examine the influence of extensification of tax, assessable compliance, and disbursement of tax arrears on tax revenue of personal income. This research uses secondary data with observation in KPP Pratama Jakarta Duren Sawit in 2012-2014. While the research uses multiple regression method to test the hypothesis at 5% significance. From the analysis performed in this research, it can be concluded that extensification of tax and assessable compliance have significant influence to tax revenue of personal income. While disbursement of tax arrears has no significant influence to to tax revenue of personal income.

Future biorefineries will prefer crops with high biomass yields, thus may precipitate fundamental changes to the agricultural landscape and the biomass production systems. Understanding the fate of nitrogen (N) in novel agricultural land uses is vital for product optimisation and environmental protection. This work reports and investigates the first multi-annual N balances for novel cropping systems optimised for high biomass production compared to traditional systems under North European climate and soil conditions. In a three-year study, two types of novel systems, i ) a rotation of annual crops optimised for maximum biomass production (maize, beet, hemp/oat, triticale as main crops, and winter rye and winter oilseed rape as “second” - cover crops), and ii ) perennial grasses (intensively fertilised (festulolium, reed canary grass, tall fescue and cocksfoot), low-fertilised (miscanthus) and unfertilised (grass-legume mixtures)), were compared with iii ) traditional systems (continuous maize or triticale, and a cereal crop rotation) at two sites in Denmark varying in temperature, rainfall and soil type (sandy loam and coarse sand). Harvested biomass N and soil nitrate dynamics, as well as model-supported nitrate leaching and field surface N balance (input minus output) of the systems were compared. At each study site, the fertilised perennial grasses outperformed all other systems by doubling biomass N and reducing nitrate leaching by 70–80% compared to the traditional systems. Compared to continuous maize monoculture, the optimised rotation supplied 70% more biomass N and 40% less nitrate leaching on coarse sandy soil, whereas on sandy loam soil it yielded about 10% less biomass N with 50% less nitrate leaching. Field surface N balances were overall neutral/positive, except for festulolium and continuous maize monoculture that slightly mined the soil for N. When N losses by leaching, denitrification and volatilisation were included, soil total N stocks were estimated to decline for the majority of the systems at both sites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of extending the object of goods subject to excise is to raise government revenues and regulate the circulation of goods that have negative impacts on the environment, health and society. The research method used is descriptive qualitative approach. Data obtained is the secondary data that can be used as a review and foundation by researchers to analyze the existing problems. The results of research and analysis are the basic consideration of extending the goods subject to excise through identification of feasible excise commodities and supply chain management, analysis of negative externalities and the purpose of the collection, and constraints analysis and multiplier effect. EU-member states are obliged to designate Natura2000 sites for habitat protection. Natura2000 sites comprise approximately 18% of the terrestrial area of the EU. On average, around 22% of Natura2000 sites are covered by agricultural land use, such as intensive cropland and more extensively managed land. Particularly in regions with high proportions of agricultural land use in Natura2000 sites, habitat protection is closely linked with the intensity of agricultural land use. Thus, it is important to understand dynamics between intensive and extensive land use. Denmark, where Natura2000 sites comprise approximately 8% of the terrestrial area, is the EU member state with the highest proportion of agricultural land use in Natura2000 sites. The Habitat Directive (HD) was implemented in Denmark in 2003. This implied increased focus from authorities on extensification of agricultural land use in Natura2000 sites. We applied data from agricultural registers to test if the implementation of the HD had a significant effect on extensification of agricultural land use within Natura2000 sites compared to areas outside Natura2000. We assessed area of extensive land use in 2013 and change in area of extensive land use for two periods: From 2000–2003, before the implementation of the HD and from 2003 to 2013, after its implementation. In order to control for the influences of biophysical constraints on agricultural intensity, we included information on slopes and peat soil. Results from a regression analysis indicate that even if influences of peat soils and slopes are taken into account, Natura2000 sites are positively related to the extent of extensive land use in 2013 and to the magnitude of extensification. Furthermore, this relation is more significant in the period after 2003, indicating that the implementation of the HD had an extensifying effect on agricultural land use within Nautra2000 sites. The article analyses land use changes in areas of strategic importance for agriculture and food production in the period 2000-2017 and which, as such, require special treatment in the event of possible changes of cultivated land in non-agriculture land. Land use data published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food is used. Changes in land use are presented at the level of the entire country and at the level of statistical regions. Subjectum litis in The Legislative and Regional Head Election Disputes in Indonesia has been determined in a limited manner in The legislation and The regulation of the Constitutional Court. However along with the election, there is expansion and constriction of subjectum litis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the determinant factors that cause flexibility of subjectum litis in legislative and regional head election dispute. In addition, no previous studies that examine factors associated with the causes flexibility of subjectum litis in the legislative and the regional headselestion.The method used in this research is using qualitative methods with normative juridical approach by collecting data and information of the legislative and head regional election dispute advance in literature. The results obtained in this study that the shift in legislative elections expanded not only to political parties and individuals DPD that can be subjectum litis but also those of individual candidates of political parties can be subjectum litis in the legislative election disputes. The factor that caused it is the choice of electoral system is still used to 2014 electoral system. Meanwhile, the Regional Head election disputes in general as subjectum litis are that couple candidates for Governor and Vice Governor, Regent and Vice Regent and the Mayor and Deputy Mayor. But in its development, the narrowing of the only candidates who met the threshold difference of votes that can act as an applicant. Besides narrowing, there is also an extension where Consitutional court accommodate domestic election observers were registered and accredited by the KPU / KIP can act as subjectum litis and as the applicant would be candidates in the General Election of 2010. Factors that cause the narrowing and expansion in the elections of regional heads are the will of lawmakers and the limited authority of the Consitutional court as well as the presence of a single candidate who is not predictable by lawmakers in drafting electoral laws regional head. Whereas in 2010, the expansion of subjectum litis because the Court did extensive interpretation caused by serious violations of the right to be elected (rights to be a candidate). Suggestions for lawmakers tobe more thoroughly formulate norms by looking at the existing state of society so it can bring justice and legal certainty both for the expectant couple and society.

This work aims to provide a comprehensive, wall-to-wall analysis of land use/cover changes in the continental areas of Portugal and Spain between 1990 and 2012. This overall objective is developed into two main research questions: (1) Whether differences between the extent and prevalence of changes exist between both countries and (2) which are the hotspots of change (areas where a given land use/cover transition dominates the landscape) in each country. We used Corine Land Cover in three different points in time (1990, 2000, 2012) to explore eight characteristic land cover transitions and carried out a cluster analysis at LAU2 level (municipalities in Spain, parishes in Portugal) that allowed to identify the areas in which each transition was dominant. The main findings include the decline of agricultural area and the increase of urbanized and artificial covers in both countries, but different trends followed by forest cover, with an increase in Spain and a decrease in Portugal. At the same time, the spatial analysis provided an overview of the main gradients of change related to tensions between agricultural intensification–extensification, on the one hand, and deforestation–afforestation, on the other.

In the last few decades, significant changes in livestock farming systems and land use were observed in European mountain areas with large implications for the sustainability of grazing agro-ecosystems. System dynamic studies become essential to understand these changes, identify the drivers involved and trying to anticipate what might happen in the future. The objectives of this study were as follows: (i) to analyse the main recent changes that occurred in mountain cattle farming in the Spanish Pyrenees; (ii) to typify diverse trajectories of evolution of these systems; and (iii) to establish drivers of change that might help understand the evolution of mountain agriculture. A constant sample of mountain cattle farms was analysed for the period 1990 to 2004. In total, 30% of farms have disappeared during this time interval. For the remaining farms, the most important general changes observed were as follows: increment of size; change of productive orientation from mixed beef-dairy to pure beef production; extensification of grazing management; reduction of family labour and increase of pluriactivity; reduction of unitary variable costs; and increase of labour productivity. After the elimination of common temporal effects between dates, multivariate techniques allowed for the identification of three patterns and six specific trajectories of evolution that are profiled in the text. Relationships between the patterns of evolution and other variables referring the farm, the household and the socio-economic environment were identified as drivers of change: (i) the specific location of the farm in relation to the capital village of the municipality and the evolution other sectors of the economy, in particular tourism; (ii) the size of the family labour, presence of successors and degree of dynamism of the farmer; and (iii) the initial orientation of production.
