OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of neonatal hearing loss in newborns from eastern Colombia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An observational, descriptive study was carried out from November 28, 2015 to April 30, 2016, where newborns at the Hospital Regional de la Orinoquia, Colombia, were included. Hearing tests were performed based on the national protocols. The database was registered in Excel version 2013 and analyzed with the statistical program SPSS version 22. RESULTS: Two thousand forty otoacoustic emissions tests were carried out. The prevalence of neonatal hearing loss was 1.32% (95% CI: 0.82-1.81). The highest frequency of hearing impairment was in the right ear (44.4%), followed by the left ear (33.3%) and bilateral in 22.2%. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of neonatal hearing loss was 1.3%. The factors associated with the appearance of neonatal hearing loss were family history, prematurity, ICU stay longer than 5 days, hyperbilirubinemia and cleft lip. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
