Introduction: Childbearing and childrearing challenge parents' physical, social and emotional capacities. Childbearing motivations and desires are indicators of person's psychological readiness to meet these challenges and to establish a healthy bond with the child. Yet, much uncertainty still exists on how childbearing motivations and desires develop in the life course and to what extent early experiences in the family of origin contribute to their development. Objective: The overall goal of the present study was to understand the relationship between early caregiving responsibilities (i.e. childhood parentification) in the family of origin and childbearing motivations and the desire to have a first child. Methods: In the cross-sectional design study, childless Polish adults (N = 384; 20–35 years old) completed a set of self-report measures. Different dimensions of parentification experienced in childhood were measured retrospectively using the Parentification Inventory, and childbearing-related variables were assessed using the Childbearing Questionnaire. Data were analysed using mediation analyses. Results: We found that past experiences of parent- and sibling-oriented parentification were positively associated with the desire to have a child, and these relationships were fully mediated by positive childbearing motivation. Further, our results showed that satisfaction with childhood caregiving responsibilities positively predicted childbearing desire, and this effect was partially mediated by positive and negative childbearing motivation. Conclusion: Individuals' early caring activities, especially when they evoke feelings of satisfaction and appreciation in the child, may play an important role in shaping childbearing motivations and desires that underlie their future reproductive behaviours. Sexual offending is a public concern and results in lasting detrimental effects. Despite evidence demonstrating the impact of belief systems on sexual offending behaviors, research exploring family belief systems among individuals who perpetrate sexual offenses is limited. This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of 10 cisgender men in outpatient treatment for sexual offending. Following Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), findings indicated a broad range of early experiences for men who have sexually offended. The rich findings that emerged from the lived experiences of the participants are presented in relation to current knowledge, and practice implications are shared. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

University students with higher experiential avoidance may not manage the adverse effects of dysfunctional family dynamics and develop interpersonal difficulties and suicidal risks. The purpose was to examine the mediating roles of experiential avoidance and interpersonal needs (i.e., thwarted belongingness, and perceived burdensomeness) in the relationship between family-of-origin dynamics and suicidality. Seven hundred ninety-four Turkish university students responded to a survey package measuring the constructs of self-differentiation, triangling, interpersonal needs, experiential avoidance, suicidality, and demographic information. Specific indirect effects -in two separate structural equation models- testing mediation effects of latent variables with bootstrapping revealed that participants with greater self-differentiation reported lower levels of experiential avoidance, perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness (in serial), and suicidality (Model 1). Participants with higher triangling reported higher experiential avoidance, perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness (in serial), and suicidality (Model 2). Perceived burdensomeness might be a predominant predictor of suicidality in the context of intergenerational family dynamics. Suicidality may increase as university students use avoidant coping strategies. The integrative perspective of the current study contributed to the literature that family-of-origin dynamics have a role in understanding the psychological flexibility and suicidal risks of university students. Implications may include assisting university students in greater self-differentiation and psychological flexibility. The present article explores the Bowen family systems theory (BFST) view that a mental disorder such as borderline personality disorder (BPD) is not a dysfunction occurring within an individual but a maladjustment of the family emotional system. A case study is presented illustrating how the emotional process moves between individuals within a family system so that when relationship processes become severely compromised, one member absorbs more of the stress, becoming vulnerable to acute symptoms. It is proposed that the use of a BFST approach with a client presenting with panic anxiety and low mood may have contributed to the lowering of symptom intensity for a sibling of the client. It appears that the client's work on her part in the relationship disturbances between her, her mother, father, and sister contributed to decreasing BPD symptoms in her sister and an improvement in overall family functioning. Therefore, the differentiating effort of one family member seemed to have a ripple effect on the whole family system. Shifting the theoretical lens from an individual‐medico‐diagnostic one to a BFST one sheds light on how all family members are expressions of a family organism and players in the symptoms emerging in one. Over the past decade, the call for the use of creative approaches in counselor education has continually increased. Creative teaching approaches encourage perspective taking, self-awareness, and openness to new experiences. This column discusses the use of the family shadow box, a master’s-level classroom assignment to assist students in marriage, family, and couples’ courses as they explore influences from their identified families of origin. This creative assignment can be used in both face-to-face and online counseling courses to help students gain awareness and insight on how their early family of origin experiences may impact their work with couples and families. Abstract This study aimed to characterize concepts of continuities and discontinuities in the intergenerational transmission of relational models, as well as marital and parental conflict resolution tactics. This was a qualitative study, in which 12 couples attended a semi-structured interview. Through thematic content analysis, the data was divided into two main themes: Intergenerational Continuities and Intergenerational Discontinuities. The continuities indicated both the repetition of positive and constructive aspects of family models, as well as the prevalence of destructive tactics, such as avoidance between spouses and the use of corporal punishment with the child. The discontinuities revealed a break from negative or destructive patterns and the adoption of positive parenting, in contrast to that of the family of origin.

Although the family as a community in which people are grouped for joint life has existed for a long time, in the last few decades it has undergone numerous changes regarding the structure. Globally, changes have been felt for a long time because of industrialization, urbanization, and increased participation of women in the labor market. Families tend to modernize, reorganize, and shrink. After the independence of the Republic of North Macedonia (1991), such changes have become more expressly recorded in the Macedonian society as well. Macedonian families increasingly migrate from villages to cities, fewer children are born, and women are educated and employed. Hence, slowly but surely, the dominant model of extended traditional families is being abandoned in favor of egalitarian nuclear families. The family tends to shrink and become estranged. This paper aims to confirm this claim, thereby taking into consideration young people's perceptions of their family of origin. To that end, the data of two research studies from 2014 and 2022 were compared, in which young people aged 18-22 answer identical questions about the family they come from. The purpose of this research is to determine the predictive effect of the sense of family coherence related to the family of origin on self-efficacy in romantic relationship and to examine the mediating role of psychological resilience in this effect. The study sample consisted of 232 people who were selected through purposeful sampling. The research was carried out with the participation of between the ages of 18-40, having a romantic relationship or married. Demographic information form, Family Sense of Coherence Scale, e Self- Efficacy in Romantic Relationships Scale and The Brief Resilience Scale were used as data collection tools. In the analysis of the data, the four-stage mediator variable analysis criteria developed by Baron and Kenny (1986) were used, and the analyzes were carried out with the SPSS 26.00 package program. Findings show that family coherence score, resilience, and self-efficacy in romantic relationships are all positively and significantly correlated with each other (p<.05). The results of the analysis show that the sense of family cohesion positively and significantly predicts self-efficacy in romantic relationships (B=.401, p<.05). In addition, in the hierarchical regression analysis carried out, with the addition of resilience skill to the equation, the beta value of the sense of family cohesion variable decreased significantly from 0.401 (p<.05) to 0.326 (p<.05) (Sobel z= 2.06, p<.05).). As a result, it is not possible to talk about the full mediation effect between the variables. However, it was found that the resilience skill showed a partial mediating variable feature between the sense of family cohesion and self-efficacy in romantic relationships. Childhood family is vital for the formation of fertility preferences and attitudes towards family life. Yet previous studies mainly focused on structural aspects of the family, whereas the role of perceptions of one's family in relation to fertility preferences remained largely understudied. This study examined how different aspects of the early family environment (i.e. relationships with parents, happiness in childhood, parental conflicts, family resources, as well as family structure) are related to the ideal number of children reported in adulthood. Using representative cross‐sectional survey data from the Finnish Family Barometer 2015, the sample comprised men and women aged 20–45 with and without children. Poisson regression models indicated that a higher number of siblings was associated with a higher ideal number of children, whereas living in a single‐parent household and overall negative perceptions of parents were related to a lower ideal number of children independent of various socio‐demographic characteristics. Further analyses showed that these family characteristics were associated with the ideal number of children mainly among childless people but not among parents. The findings suggest that the early family environment is related to the formation of the ideal number of children, especially for childless people. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The absence of even one parent has short- and long-term effects on the child's current and future health. The purpose of the study was to determine whether there is a long-term relationship between the type of family in which men were raised and an individual's adult social position, well-being in adulthood and their biological condition regardless of social status in adulthood. Materials and methods: Data for 4528 males, aged 25-80 years, were selected from the archives of the Lower Silesian Medical Centre in Wroclaw, Poland. A total of 329 men declared that they grew up in incomplete families. Height, weight, % fat, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, blood parameters, and health of men who grew up in complete or incomplete families were compared. Results: Growing up in an incomplete family reduced chances for better education, decreased life satisfaction in adulthood, and negatively affected the final height. After taking into account the education achieved, the effect persisted only for diastolic blood pressure, creatinine, and serum phosphorus levels. Conclusions: Growing up in an incomplete family has a significant impact on male's socioeconomic position (SES), life satisfaction, and final height. A poorer quality of diet is proposed as an early life risk factor for adult health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Referring to Komisi Perlindungan Anak Indonesia (KPAI), the highest perpetrators in family violence were mothers (22%), but there has not been much research on the violence transmission from parents to children and the role of forgiveness as a protective factor. This study aims to examine the role of forgiveness as a moderator of the relationship between the perceived unfair treatment by family members of origin and anger with their own children. Participants involved in this study were 63 mothers who perceived unfair treatment by family members of origin and had children aged between 2 to 7 years old. Data were collected using 3 scales: Personal Forgiveness Scale, Family of Origin Hurt Scale, and Attitude toward Child Scale. The multiple regression analysis showed that there was a significant positive relationship between the perceived unfair treatment and anger with one's own child (gender similarity transmission sample, r = .75, p = .000,n = 31; all sample, r = .77, p = .000, n = 63). The analysis for gender similarity transmission sample showed that 56.7% (and for all samples, 58.4) of the variance in anger with one's own child was explained by the perceived unfair treatment by the mother. Meanwhile, forgiveness does not play as a moderator variable in the association of both variables. The implications of the results of this study are discussed.

This study investigates the influence of family of origin on parental responsiveness toward own child, taking into account gender differences. A total of 110 triads of mothers, fathers, and their first child aged 6-10 months participated in the standardized Free Play procedure. Parental responsiveness was assessed through observational measures (using Ainsworth procedure) and self-reported scales (Parental Responsiveness Scale). Results revealed correlations between objectively assessed responsiveness and self-reported parental styles in the family of origin, separately for mothers and fathers. Among mothers having daughters, parental sensitivity (an important aspect of observationally measured responsiveness) was positively correlated with having had a liberal loving mother and a negative correlation with an autocraticmother. Cooperation (another aspect of observationallymeasured responsiveness) was correlated positively with having had a liberal lovingmother. Meanwhile, having a liberal unlovingmother predicted lover sensitivity and cooperation. Similar correlations were not observed for mothers having sons. Among fathers having daughters, both aspects of observed responsiveness were positively correlated with having had a democratic father and negatively with autocratic or liberal unloving parents. Moreover, having a liberal unloving father and autocraticmother predicted their lower responsiveness toward daughters. These findings highlight the role of family dynamics in shaping parental responsiveness and emphasize the importance of understanding these dynamics in promoting responsive parenting. This study uses James Donovan's object relations couple therapy to examine the triangle of focus (conflict style, couple characteristics, and family of origin) and triangle of conflict (anxiety, defence mechanisms, and hidden emotions) of a married Korean man with sexual dysfunction (reduced sexual desire, premature ejaculation, and erectile dysfunction). This qualitative study uses thematic analysis to identify, describe, and analyse a family therapy case study. The aim of this study is to examine the couple's interaction patterns and experiences of conflicts related to the husband's erectile dysfunction. The researchers induced patterns or topics by repeatedly reading and comparing the data. Then, they textualised and analysed the relevant data. To ensure the reliability and validity of the data analysis, the researchers conducted shared coding sessions to review and discuss the initial codes and the generated main themes and subthemes, triangulating the qualitative data. Findings show that a newlywed husband's sexual dysfunction is associated with his emotional resistance towards his wife's unilateral pursuit over their sexual relationship and the negative emotions triggered by their dysfunctional interactions. Further, couple characteristics, conflict style (dysfunctional interactions), and family‐of‐origin factors (transference and patrilocality) influenced their sexual relationship. Therefore, therapists who counsel Korean couples with sexual issues may pay attention to the sociocultural factors, interactional patterns, and psychological factors associated with unresolved issues with their families of origin. This study aims to determine the relationship between the family of origin relations and coping styles with stress in the married individuals. This research, which was conducted as a relational screening model was carried out with 150 married and at least high school graduates living in Ankara, selected with a purposeful sample. The data was obtained using the Information Form, Family of Origin Relations Inventory (FORI) and Styles of Coping Inventory (SCI). In married individuals,(n=150) the mean total score of SCI was 78.32±7.98; The mean total score of the FORI was found to be 26.51±4.50. There was no significant relationship between the total scores of FORI and SCI; It was determined that there is a positive correlation between the self-confident approach, helpless approach and submissive approach, which are the sub-dimensions of SCI, and the total score of the FORI. As a result, it was found that there was no relationship between family of origin relations and stress coping styles in married individuals, but as the relations with the family of origin relations improved, the use of self-confident approach, helpless approach and submissive approach increased among coping styles. For this reason, it is recommended to plan psychosocial interventions that will raise awareness about the relationship between their family of origin relations and their coping styles in order to enable married individuals to cope functionally.

Lesbian and gay adults' self-reported experiences of violence from family of origin in adulthood have been less examined in previous research on interpersonal violence from intimate others. In China, while it has been understood that lesbians and gay men face mounting pressure to marry and have children, there is little empirical evidence on their experiences of violence from family of origin. This paper analyzes self-reported experiences of negative treatment and violence from a larger-scale study in China of 11,048 Chinese lesbian and gay cisgender adults. The majority of Chinese lesbians and gay men felt pressure to get married and have children (70.4%), and experienced different forms of negative treatment and violence from their family members based on sexual orientation (54.2%). A significant gender difference was observed. This paper provides novel empirical evidence for the lived experiences of lesbians and gay men in China and bears implications for China's Anti-domestic Violence Law. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Family-of-origin theory suggests that unstable functioning of the family of origin is related to the limited motivation to take advantage of educational and occupational opportunities. This study identifies latent classes of homeless adults' perceptions of families of origin and compares their life-course patterns. Four latent classes were identified in a sample of 831 homeless men living in the Warsaw agglomeration, Poland: adult children of multi-problem non-nuclear families (10%), adult children of non-nuclear families with negatively attached relationships (10%), adult children of multi-problem nuclear families (29%), and adult children of well-functioning families (51%). Their reports were compared with those of a control group of 731 housed men. Consistent with the family-of-origin and resilience theories, homelessness in adult children of troubled families was more frequently preceded by controllable events, such as criminal activity, alcohol misuse, and violence, than by problems less or indirectly related to their own decisions, including disability, health difficulties, and long-term unemployment, which were more prevalent in adult children of well-functioning families. Despite the high disparities in school exclusion, no significant differences in first-job experience were observed across the latent classes. The level of functioning of the family of origin is likely to differentiate pathways to homelessness. This qualitative narrative study aimed to examine how a family of origin influenced the professional self of Colombian students pursuing a profession in family therapy. Few research studies have investigated the development of self among native Spanish speakers from Colombia. Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in clinical psychology and family therapy internships (N = 16) from the Colombian cities of Medellín, Pereira, and Santa Marta participated in this study. Data collection using personal diaries, family albums, autobiographies, and in‐depth interviews served as sources for narrative analysis. Two themes and four subthemes representing positive and negative aspects of influences of families of origin helped organize the findings. Student experiences illustrate abilities, skills, and potentialities in the narratives. Implications for clinical training and future research recommendations highlight a path forward. Considering the new paradigm of adoption, insofar as a child or adolescent deprived of parental care is provided with an environment in which he/she can develop as fully as possible, an attempt will be made to identify the emotional factors that may have a negative or positive influence on the evolution of these processes and at what stage of the adoption process they do so, with a view to implementing early preventive or therapeutic measures. Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the role of family of origin functioning and perceived parenting styles in explaining the meanings that individuals attribute to the concept of heterosexual marriage in a Turkish sample. Method: One hundred seventy-five Turkish individuals reached by online-sampling were included in the study. In the data analysis, multiple linear regression analysis was conducted.Fındıngs: Analysis results showed that while the predictivity of affective responsiveness, communication, behavioral control, and roles dimensions of the family of origin functioning were found significant, it was seen that emotionally depriving mother/father, normative mother/father, exploitative/abusive father, belittling/criticizing father, and conditional/achievement father perceptions shape the concept of marriage. Conclusıon: This study showed that the elements related to the family of origin system and perceived parenting styles play a role in the formation of meanings that individuals attribute to heterosexual marriage. The idea of a 'post-gay' identity suggests sexuality no longer remains a key identifier to gay men's sense of self. The concept provides a useful framework for theorising how gay men's identities include and go beyond their sexuality, allowing scholars to conceptualise it in more complex ways. This study contributes to the literature, by drawing on the idea of 'personal community' to unpack how multiple connections inform gay men's multi-faceted identities. It is based on in-depth qualitative interviews with gay South Asian men in Australia. Findings reveal that friends, partners and LGBT+ groups play important roles in informing respondents' subjectivities. Significantly, the family of origin was important to identity formation, which challenges the dominant understanding that gay men's identities exist separately to them. Radical housing reform has triggered tremendous changes in both housing supply and housing demand in China over the past four decades, leading to apparent generational fractures in homeownership. In contrast to the rising age of first dwelling purchasers in some Western countries, younger cohorts in China are entering homeownership at increasingly younger ages despite rising housing prices. Based on a retrospective survey conducted in Shanghai in 2018 and 2019, this study examines the changing roles of family formation and parental background in affecting the timing of entering homeownership across different cohorts. Employing event history analyses, this study demonstrates that transitions to first homeownership have become synchronised with family formation among younger cohorts, which implies the social norm of 'marital home'. Furthermore, the results reveal that parental background is increasingly influential in determining the timing of first home purchase; men and individuals from one-child families are more likely to be the beneficiary of parental help to enter homeownership. Through the lens of cohort, this study contributes to understanding the changing role of family formation and family of origin, which are shaped by institutional and cultural transformations in China. The intensified intergenerational transmission leads to exacerbation of horizontal housing inequality, that is, some achieving homeownership at a younger age while others being shunned from homeownership in the context of worsening housing affordability. The aim of the present study is to investigate the relationship between the communicational patterns and emotional atmosphere of the family of origin and the attitude toward marriage considering the mediating role of self-differentiation. This study was conducted fundamentally, using the correlation method of path analysis. The statistical population included single students in Tehran and the sample consisted of 325 students (230 girls/90 boys). The instruments used were Marriage Attitude Scale (MAS), Family Communicational Pattern (RFCP), Emotional Atmosphere (Hill-Bern), and Self-differentiation (DSI-SF). Data were analyzed by path analysis using SPSS-24 and AMOS software. The results showed that among the communication patterns of the family of origin, the patterns of dialog and conformity had a significant relationship with self-differentiation. There was a significant relationship between emotional atmosphere in the family of origin and self-differentiation. There was a significant relationship between self-differentiation and optimistic, realistic, and ideal attitudes toward marriage. The results showed that self-differentiation mediated the relationship between the dialog patterns and the emotional atmosphere of the family of origin with an optimistic attitude toward marriage. Therefore, it can be concluded that by improving the communication patterns and emotional atmosphere of the family of origin, and thus increasing the self-differentiation of the individual, one can help to achieve an optimistic, realistic, and idealistic attitude toward marriage.

Inhibited attachment disordered behavior (IADB) is characterized by difficulty in establishing an attachment relationship with a primary caregiver; is associated with persistent social and emotional problems; and is observed most frequently in contexts of pathological care such as institutional rearing. Here, we seek to enhance understanding of the conditions that give rise to IADB among institutionalized children by examining prior family experiences of neglect and deprivation and concurrent relational experiences at the institution. The sample is comprised of 146 children, between 36 and 78 months. IADB was assessed using a semi-structured interview administered to the child's primary caregiver. Results revealed that both pre-institutionalization experiences (e.g. parental abandonment) and current relational ones (e.g. low quality of child-caregiver relationship) predicted IADB. Findings are discussed in light of the need to promote conditions which foster the establishment and maintenance of the child's selective attachment to a caregiving figure.

This study examines three therapy cases of Korean families to explore the factors that contributed to the male clients' experience of sex as pressure which led to sexual dysfunction. We used intra- and inter-case analysis to identify similarities and differences between the contributing factors in the cases. The contributing factors were psychological, in-law factors, marital communication factors, family of origin factors, and transference factors. This study examined trajectories of new parents' perceptions of conflictual coparenting and predictors thereof. Partners in 182 dual-earner different-gender U.S. couples reported their prenatal marital conflict and individual characteristics (conflictual coparenting in the family of origin, parenting self-efficacy expectations, and parenting role beliefs) during the third trimester of pregnancy, their infant's characteristics (negative affectivity and gender) at 3 months postpartum, and their perceptions of undermining coparenting and exposure to conflict at 3, 6, and 9 months postpartum. Results of latent growth curve models indicated that new parents' perceptions of undermining, but not exposure to conflict, increased similarly from 3 to 9 months. Fathers perceived higher initial undermining than mothers, but there were no gender differences in exposure to conflict. For mothers, greater prenatal marital conflict and greater infant negative affectivity were associated with elevated levels of perceived undermining and exposure to conflict. For fathers, more egalitarian role beliefs were associated with lower undermining and less exposure to conflict, whereas greater prenatal marital conflict, higher conflictual coparenting in the family of origin, and greater infant negative affectivity were associated with greater exposure to conflict. Fathers also perceived greater undermining and exposure to conflict when mothers reported higher prenatal marital conflict, whereas mothers' greater conflictual coparenting in the family of origin was related to fathers' lower exposure to conflict. Background: Individuals with problematic gambling, alcohol and substance use commonly report lower employment rates and more employment-related problems such as job loss, work conflicts and poor performance. Method: A thematic qualitative analysis was conducted to extract employment-related themes from 21 sets of addiction counselors' case notes of couple therapy sessions (average 10 sessions per case) from a randomized controlled trial of Congruence Couple Therapy (CCT). Case notes were examined for the types of employment issues to answer the research question: What are the interconnections of employment, couple adjustment and addictive behaviors as revealed in the CCT counselors' case notes? Results: Five key areas of employment-related stress were identified: (1) unemployment, (2) financial concerns, (3) history of crime, (4) overworking and workaholism, and (5) workplace conflict. These themes interacted negatively with couple adjustment and addictive behaviors. Using CCT as an intervention, clients gained skills in 4 areas transferred to employment: (1) awareness of self, other and family of origin, (2) congruent communication, (3) work-family balance, and (4) enlisting spousal support. These themes intersected with enhanced work functioning and reduced stress, alcohol use and gambling. Conclusion: Employment problems negatively impacted addictive behaviors, couple adjustment and well-being of partners and clients. Skills and awareness gained in CCT promoted changes in addicted clients' employment functioning and coping with employment stress. The domains of work and couple adjustment are mutually influential in increasing or reducing stress with implications for addiction recovery. Violence in couple relationships, both in Turkey and in the world, is amongst the major problems. There is a need for different studies revealing what affects the relationships between couples and how they are affected, how the relationships in the family origin of individuals are reflected on the relationships between couples and how to deal with this problem between couples. In this context, in this study, the causes of violence in couple relationships, strategies of coping with violence in the couple's relationship, and the effects of the origin family experiences of the couple on the couple relationship, unlike other studies in the literature, were examined. This study is a descriptive study and phenomenology, a qualitative research type, was used as the research design. The research data were obtained through semi-structured interviews, which are qualitative research methods. Content analysis method was used to analyze the data. As a result of the research, it has been revealed that the violence experienced by married individuals in couple relationships reflects not only individual characteristics of individuals but also the relational experiences of couples and intergenerational family interaction.

Abstract Background How adults with disabilities perceive participation has received little attention. Our purpose was to formulate a grounded theory on participation, based on the subjective experience of adults with cognitive, physical, or psychiatric impairment(s), and to identify barriers, facilitators, and support needs concerning participation in different areas of life. We aimed to explore whether the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), ratified by Switzerland in 2014, and its principles are being met. Here we report on the main category and focus on the participation areas ‘family of origin’ and ‘intimate relationships.’ Methods In a qualitative, grounded theory study, we conducted problem-centered interviews with 23 adults with cognitive, physical, or psychiatric impairments (30–53 years; 11 men, 12 women), with different housing (on their own, assisted living, with parents) and work situations (primary vs. secondary labor market) in nine German-speaking Swiss cantons. Results Participation can be understood as a continuum that extends on a horizontal level (from participation is restricted to participation takes place) and a vertical level (separative setting vs. inclusive setting). In separative as well as in inclusive settings, diverse levels of participation are possible. Many participants were stuck in an ‘in-between’ area between separative and inclusion-oriented settings. In the family of origin, there was a thin line between fulfilling relations that enhance participation and conflictual relations and overprotective parenting that limit participation. In intimate relationships, opportunities for participation were limited overall. Many interviewees were single. Social environment and family of origin (e.g., parents) can enable and facilitate intimate relationships and sexual contacts but can also be an important barrier. Conclusions Participation can be understood as a continuum. Participation restrictions exist in separative as well as in inclusive-oriented settings, also in the areas of family of origin and intimate relationships. Participation barriers must be torn down in separative as well as in inclusion-oriented settings. Trajectories to inclusive settings should be facilitated. Families with children with impairment(s) should be supported from early on to create the best possible participation possibilities for the (adult) person with impairment(s) and to support the family of origin itself.

Abstract Intimate partner violence may be influenced by family experience. This study aims to test a dyadic model verifying the relationship between events experienced in the family of origin and intimate partner violence. This study addressed 304 heterosexual couples using a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Revised Conflict Tactics Scales (CTS2), and Family Background Questionnaire (FBQ). The analyses were performed using the actor-partner interdependence model (APIM) and the structural equation model. Less intense violence was positively and significantly correlated with violence perpetrated by husbands and wives (r = 0.661; p < 0.01), whereas no correlation was found between severe violence and latent factors, excluding interdependence between the dyads. All the seven models presented satisfactory goodness of fit (CFI > 0.91; RMSEA < 0.08), except for the dimension “sexual abuse”. Therefore, the results reinforce that the events experienced in the family of origin influence intimate partner violence.

A novel Family of Origin as Supervisory Resource Model that harnesses the family of origin of the therapist-in-training as a cultural supervisory resource in the training paradigm is presented. The format of the model comprises three phases: supervisor's exploration of the trainee's professional dilemmas, supervisor's exploration of the same dilemma through stories narrated by the supervisee's family of origin members, and supervisee's presentation of a case that is an example of the dilemma. The application of this training model during supervision strengthens the trainee's flexibility in divergent family systems and enhances the ability to handle dilemmas and to form a healthy therapeutic alliance. In this study, it was aimed to examine the couple relationships of adult individuals whose marriage experience resulted in divorce, their perspectives regarding the relational interactions with divorce and the interactions with their family of origin. The study is a descriptive one, and employs the phenomenological design, one of the qualitative research methods. In this study, data was collected from the participants through the interview technique in the spring term of 2019, and the content analysis method was used to analyze the data. The study group consisted of 39 divorced (27 female; 12 male) individuals aged between 23-55, who did not have any psychiatric diagnosis and living in a city center in Central Anatolia. Semi-structured interview form was used to collect data. As a result, it was concluded that the participants had too much difficulty in couple relationships, and the relationships were affected from the family of origin relationships, premarital experiences and socio-cultural elements. The subject of the article is the parental experience of coming out of a child with a queer identity, in the context of a socio-political landscape in which homophobia and transphobia are a significant problem. Drawing on the results of two empirical studies conducted in Poland, the authors focus attention on two themes: (1) parents' reactions to their children's coming out as queer persons, and (2) the disclosure of the identity of a "parent of a queer person." Objectives: Early physical and mental experiences from family of origin and parents might influence individuals' later adulthood quality of life (QOL). The present study was undertaken to examine the inter-relationships among function of family of origin, resilience, and current quality of life in a T2DM sample from China. Methods: Three hundred T2DM participants were included in this investigation. A Chinese version of Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale 25, an APGAR family functioning scale, and a Diabetes Specificity Quality of Life Scale were used to assess the levels of mental resilience, function of family of origin, and QOL of these patients, respectively. Multiple stepwise regression analysis was performed to identify the predictors of QOL. A 3-step composite analysis was used to examine the predicted mediating effect. Results: QOL total score was negatively related to resilience (r = −.299, p < 0.01) and family function (r = −.246, p < 0.01). In contrast, a significantly positive correlation between resilience and family function (r =.302, p < 0.01) was found. Two subscales of resilience (strength and optimism) and function of family of origin explained an additional 4.5% of the variance in QOL changes after controlling for demographic variables. Resilience had a 26.3% mediating effect between function of family of origin and current QOL. Conclusion: In conclusion, the present work suggested a synthetic and stable association between function of family of origin and QOL level in the later life in a sample of Chinese T2DM population, with resilience acting as a mediating factor. Adult individuals who have grown up in an unfavorable family setting may be low in mental resilience, and would have worse QOL in their mid- and later life, especially when they are confronted with certain adversity or stress, such as having diabetes. Old resentments and unfinished business from the family of origin can constrain adults in current relationships with parents or siblings and negatively affect relationships with partners or children. This article explores how old wounds get reactivated in current relationships and contribute to the intergenerational transmission of painful legacies and trauma. Building on intergenerational family theory and interpersonal neurobiology, the dynamics of reactivity and pathways for growth are explored. While much of the time the human brain is on autopilot, driven by habits and emotional reactivity, we are capable of bringing prefrontal thoughtfulness and choice to close relationships. Rather than being victims of parents or our past, we can become authors of our own relational life. Interventions are offered to help adult clients "wake from the spell of childhood", heal intergenerational wounds, and "grow up" relationships with family of origin. The damage caused by parent-blaming in therapy is explored and contrasted with Ivan Boszormenyi-Nagy's emphasis on rejunctive action and cultivating resources of trustworthiness in intergenerational relationships. The family is considered both in its cultural context - including stressors and resources for resilience - and in its life cycle context. Aging in the intergenerational family is discussed, focusing on ways adult children and their parents can grow and flourish with the challenges at this time of life. The article describes risk factors and protective factors in the family of origin of women who – in their adolescence – were subject to formal control of an institution of a system preventing demoralization of children and adolescents. The theoretical analysis was based on the concept of resilience. The main research problem is presented in the following question: What factors (risk and protective) occur in individual experiences of women – former pupils of social rehabilitation centers? The author used the case study method, and the autobiographical narrative interview technique for data collection. Based on the analysis of the obtained material, risk factors and protective factors inherent in the family environment of narrators were listed, the configuration of these factors was reconstructed, and their protective or risk value from the point of view of the development of demoralisation was estimated. The most important conclusion is that the same factors (death of a parent, supportive connections with extended family members) contituted different value in the life of narrators. From the perspective of all-life experience of the studied women, it can be stated that what constituted a risk factor for one of them, protected the other against further demoralisation. It was also revealed that instrumental parentification was an important protective factor against the development demoralisation. The conclusions confirm the importance of a case-by-case approach in assessing the value of individual factors (protective and risk) and their importance for the development and life quality of individuals.
