The present study is the result of interdisciplinary research on the relationship between workplace harassment (or mobbing) and fibromyalgia (FM). Mobbing can cause emotional trauma due to the intense suffering that it provokes in the individuals who experience workplace harassment for a prolonged and recurrent manner. FM is a progressive disease that presents mainly in women and is characterized by generalized, debilitating pain, along with fatigue that does not resolve with rest. Because of studies suggesting an association between these two phenomena, we examined these two conditions in the context of our own country (Mexico). The purpose of this study is to answer two questions: 1) Can workplace relationships exacerbate a pre-existing case of FM? 2) Can workplace harassment cause the development of a disease such as FM?

Fatigue is a complex, multidimensional syndrome that is prevalent in patients with acquired brain damage and has a negative impact on the neurorehabilitation process. It presents from early stages after the injury, and may persist over time, regardless of whether sequelae have resolved. Fatigue is conditioned by upper neuronal circuits, and is defined as an abnormal perception of overexertion. Its prevalence ranges from 29% to 77% after stroke, from 18% to 75% after traumatic brain injury, and from 47% to 97% after brain tumours. Fatigue is associated with factors including female sex, advanced age, dysfunctional families, history of specific health conditions, functional status (eg, fatigue prior to injury), comorbidities, mood, secondary disability, and the use of certain drugs. Assessment of fatigue is fundamentally based on such scales as the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS). Advances have recently been made in imaging techniques for its diagnosis, such as in functional MRI. Regarding treatment, no specific pharmacological treatment currently exists; however, positive results have been reported for some conventional neurorehabilitation therapies, such as bright light therapy, neurofeedback, electrical stimulation, and transcranial magnetic stimulation. This review aims to assist neurorehabilitation professionals to recognise modifiable factors associated with fatigue and to describe the treatments available to reduce its negative effect on patients.

Introduction: Depression affect individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) more frequently compared with the general population. It can worsen the symptoms of MS, influence disability progression, and significantly reduce the quality of life (QoL). Method: We investigated the prevalence of depressive symptoms in a cohort of 200 patients with MS (76% women) and their association with sleep patterns, fatigue, QoL, demographics, and other clinical characteristics in real-world settings. The study was conducted through clinical evaluations and questionnaires related to depression: Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS); fatigue: Modified Fatigue Impact Scale; sleep quality: Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Epworth Sleepiness Scale; and QoL: Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life-54 (MSQOL-54). Results: According to the BDI and HDRS, the prevalence of depressive symptoms was 40.5 and 28.27%, respectively. Patients with depressive symptoms exhibited higher disability scores, longer ambulation times, worse cognitive function in the Symbol Digit Modalities Test, and poorer sleep quality. They also had significantly higher fatigue and daytime somnolence scores, as well as lower scores on the MSQOL-54: physical (40.55 vs. 62.3; P

Objective: The Chalder Fatigue Scale (CFS) is a brief self-report screening scale for fatigue that is used in Spain but has not been validated for the Spanish population. The aim of this study was to adapt and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the CFS (Sp-CFS). Method: The sample consisted of 3,671 participants (3,190 from the general population and 481 patients), aged 18 to 86 years (M = 28.43; DT = 12.71), 67.6% of whom were women. Psychometric properties of the scale were tested in a cross-sectional design using cross-validation (exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis) and estimation of invariance (sex and clinical condition). Results: A four-factor model (low energy, sleep problems, concentration problems and subjective cognitive dysfunction) rather than an original two-factor model (physical and mental fatigue) provided better indices of goodness of fit to the data. The internal consistency and stability of the scale were excellent. Its convergent validity was supported by its significant association with anxiety, depression, stress, and the positive and negative symptoms of the psychosis spectrum. The instrument did not show significant differences between sexes or clinical conditions, and it discriminated between the general population and the patients, with the latter obtaining significantly greater scores. Conclusions: Sp-CFS is a reliable and valid scale for measuring a transdiagnostic construct such as fatigue in Spanish general and clinical populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study attempts to obtain the approximate fatigue vulnerability of a steel arch bridge from the Colombian national road network. It establishes the interaction between the demand and the available capacity through the Weibull probability equation, and an AASHTO remaining-time equation indicated in (FHWA, 2015). However, the available capacity in terms of the S-N curve obtained from available international references was modified to account for the effects of corrosion present in elements and/or joints in the bridge. The load demand was modeled as the controlled action of the fatigue truck reported in AASHTO, which was systematically located on a structural model represented by Shell and Frame type finite elements, which represented the information available in drawings (in the current Colombian bridge management system), and the one obtained from structural survey activities. The structural model was further calibrated by a parametric study on the modulus of elasticity of steel, which included the minimization of the error difference in the vertical deflections of a bridge load test, keeping the magnitude within the expected ranges established in a protocol. Such reports of actual deflections were achieved using distance meters at important points of the bridge. This model allowed for estimating the magnitude of stresses in the structural elements of the bridge, especially in an area of interest for the study where chemical and physical elements of structural deficiency were determined. The results show an inverse relationship between the probability of failure and remaining service life. The effect of corrosion on the remaining capacity and the probability of failure of the structural elements is clear. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study focuses on the evaluation of the load-bearing capacity of asphalt mixtures by conducting flexure and tensile beam tests. The main objective is to compare the criterion of 50% initial stiffness with that of maximum normalized stiffness and the limits established by the CR-2020 standard in Costa Rica. The methodology is based on sinusoidal strain tests to determine the number of repetitions required for fatigue failure. The analysed samples were tested using the AASHTO T-321 standard with the previouslymentioned failure criteria. The results indicate that there is no clear correlation between both criteria and the limits established by the CR-2020 standard, however, it was determined that the standardized stiffness test yields data with a greater number of load repetitions. Finally, the fatigue test is crucial to evaluate the long-term capacity of asphalt mixtures. Further research is need to determine the feasibility of adopting the standard stiffness criterion to be used in current specifications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Fatigability is a frequent phenomenon in spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). However, there is a lack of scales designed for and validated in SMA patients to determine the frequency and impact on daily life of physical fatigue and perceived fatigability in these patients. Material and methods: This is an observational cross-sectional study in a cohort of patients older than 14 years with genetically confirmed SMA. We used a new questionnaire (PROfuture) designed to assess physical fatigue and perceived fatigability, and classified patients with SMA according to their functional status as non-sitters, sitters, and walkers. Results: Fifty-one patients completed the questionnaire. More than half of them reported symptoms of physical fatigue, although the frequency and type of symptoms varied between functional groups. Non-sitters reported a greater impact of physical fatigue on daily activities, while walkers more frequently presented fatigue associated with overexertion. Regarding perceived fatigability, non-sitters reported it most frequently when performing activities that involve the upper limbs and axial muscles, followed by sitters. Walkers presented high perceived fatigability in the lower limbs, but lower severity in the upper limbs. Conclusion: Physical fatigue and perceived fatigability in patients with SMA are very frequent and affect activities of daily living. Therefore, their assessment should be included in the routine follow-up of these patients. A holistic approach to the fatigue–fatigability phenomenon in SMA is essential to understanding its pathophysiology and achieving an adequate therapeutic management.

Introduction: Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) endodontic files are made of hyperelastic material with shape memory. However, these files suffer a sudden fracture during the endodontic treatment, which is considered an unfavorable prognosis. Many studies have been conducted to establish fatigue resistance focused on file brands and determine which is better. Although the most common failure mechanisms have been established for motorized endodontic files, the information is scattered, making it difficult to develop clear research trends. Methods: a scoping review was carried out using Scopus, Dimensions.ai, Web of Science, and Science Direct databases to answer screening questions related to the predominant fracture mechanism in NiTi files, test types, and equipment used for experimentation and to identify the most active authors. Results: using the general search terms, 432 research papers were found, of which 75 were finally selected after eliminating duplicates and applying exclusion criteria. Conclusions: typical failure mechanisms for rotatory and reciprocating files were identified based on the panoramic review and bibliometric indicators. Also, the standard mechanical tests for endodontic files and the characteristics of their assemblies were summarized. The most active authors in the area and their nationality were tagged. Finally, gaps for future research are proposed to generate a comprehensive knowledge of NiTi file failure.

The elimination of a large quantity of waste such as plastic, bottles, tyres, etc., that are generated in large quantities and produce an environmental impact and risk in the areas where they are produced and stored. The current study aims to use recycled rubber grain (GCR), originating from discarded tyres, in the manufacture of asphalt concrete. Seven mixtures were designed using the Marshall methodology, one mixture without the addition of the rubber grain, which will be the control mixture for comparison, and six mixtures with the addition of 1% of rubber grain of varying sizes, which oscillate between that passing through a sieve of 2.36 mm (No. 8) and that retained on a sieve of 0.075 mm (No. 200). Once the respective working formulas had been determined, performance tests were carried out such as: susceptibility to humidity damage, plastic deformation resistance, resilient modulus, fatigue resistance and skid resistance or each of the mixtures. The results show that the incorporation of rubber grain in some cases produces a slight decrease in the optimum content of asphalt cement, increase in Marshall stability, an improvement in plastic deformation, an increase in resistance, a longer fatigue life in comparison with a conventional mixture. The results of the laboratory tests indicate that in using recycled rubber grain, it is possible to obtain asphalt concretes with improved required technical characteristics whilst constructing a surface which is environmentally friendly. Fatigue resistance is one of the most frequent and most complex problems to predict in asphalt mixtures. Due to its viscoelastic nature, asphalt is the material that presents the greatest contribution to fatigue within the asphalt mixture. The G*sind parameter proposed by SUPERPAVE is the most widely used for fatigue evaluation; however, it has its limitations since it does not allow to observe if the sample is damaged, for example. The results of the present work allow to demonstrate the benefit of the incorporation of the recycled tire rubber as a modifier residue of the asphalt, through the analysis with the rheometer through the proposed test. Finally, the cycle curves are made based on the imposed deformations, which show a greater resistance to fatigue in the asphalt, with increasing rates of tire rubber out of use.

Introduction: A growing number of studies have evaluated the effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for the symptomatic treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). Methods: We performed a PubMed search for articles, recent books, and recommendations from the most relevant clinical practice guidelines and scientific societies regarding the use of TMS as symptomatic treatment in MS. Conclusions: Excitatory electromagnetic pulses applied to the affected cerebral hemisphere allow us to optimise functional brain activity, including the transmission of nerve impulses through the demyelinated corticospinal pathway. Various studies into TMS have safely shown statistically significant improvements in spasticity, fatigue, lower urinary tract dysfunction, manual dexterity, gait, and cognitive deficits related to working memory in patients with MS; however, the exact level of evidence has not been defined as the results have not been replicated in a sufficient number of controlled studies. Further well-designed, randomised, controlled clinical trials involving a greater number of patients are warranted to attain a higher level of evidence in order to recommend the appropriate use of TMS in MS patients across the board. TMS acts as an adjuvant with other symptomatic and immunomodulatory treatments. Additional studies should specifically investigate the effect of conventional repetitive TMS on fatigue in these patients, something that has yet to see the light of day.
