The article aims to explore intersectionality and its societal impact on the characters as portrayed in Elif Shafak’s 10 Minutes 38 Seconds In This Strange World (2019). This issue was extensively discussed to comprehend the representation of gender inequality and patriarchy in the story. Although the text has been the subject of discussion among a limited number of scholars, the novelty of this study lies in its adoption of a theoretical perspective that has not been utilized previously, specifically Kimberly Crenshaw’s framework of intersectionality. Methodologically, this qualitative study identified and collected the primary data from the text by selecting direct and indirect quotations relevant to the issue discussed. This approach was complemented by secondary sources from previous and related studies which were drawn from books and journal articles. Having analyzed the text by applying Crenshaw’s theory of intersectionality, the authors found that Shafak represented gender inequality and patriarchy in Turkey as a hegemonic and systematic belief. The text also discovered that the perpetuation of the patriarchal system, rooted in the practices frequently justified by religious rhetoric, is effectively prolonged by the continued male dominance in shaping public policies. It also indicates that the main character, Tequila Leila, and the other characters in the story possess overlapping identities, leading to numerous unfortunate experiences. Tequila Leila’s oppressed experiences unveiled the structural and representational intersectionalities.

There is no literary creation that exists in a vacuum. Most creative works like plays have a strong link with the society that inspires them in such a way that they mirror the ills and preferences of the society for corrections or improvements. It is on this basis that the present study focuses on the commitment to female resistance to socially entrenched oppression in many African societies as depicted in the plays of six African playwrights. The study used the social logical approach as the theoretical framework and examined the Sweet Trap and Wedlock of the Gods by Zulu Sofola; the Marriage of Anansewa and Edufa by Efua Sutherland; and the Dilemma of a Ghost and Anowa by Ama Ata Aidoo. At the end, the study argues that the idea of resistance flows through the six plays where the resistance is mainly in two folds; the major being the resistance against negatively entrenched stereotypical roles of women which include the lack of choice and freedom to make personal decision as can be seen in Ugwoma and Anowa and the others. Analysis of El sí de las niñas predominantly centres on the topics of unequal marriage and the characters of doña Irene y don Diego. Yet the person who proves to be the winner at the end, in spite of the suffering which the spectator (or reader) observes, is doña Francisca whose on-going emotional predicament is set out by Moratín and can be subtly appreciated in its development throughout the three acts of this so-called «comedy». The analysis put forward in this article focuses on the point of view of the mature girl, entailing a detailed interpretation of the ups and downs of the action as the plot advances; it focuses on the nature of doña Francisca’s reactions and thoughts at each stage of the work’s unfolding. By the end it might be thought to be a «feminist» reading of the drama, one which vindicates the role of the long-suffering girl and her capacity to resist pressure from her mother and would-be suitor in order to marry the man she loves.

Kamala Das is one of the important women writers in Indian English Literature and her contribution to develop women writings is undoubtedly great. Her poetry acquires such an important place not only in India but also in the whole world that there is no bound of research work in the literary world. Ample usage of images is an important characteristic of her poetry. All these images are used to express her inner feelings of oppression, dissatisfaction, unhappiness and subjugation. She uses different images for different feelings which show her craftsmanship in poetry. To express male aggression and ferociousness she uses the image of a lion because a lion is the king of a jungle where he preys according to his own will and other animals become helpless victims at his greedy paws. Das finds a similarity between her husband and a lion and so she uses this figurative language. On the other hand to express female subordination and meekness she uses the image of a dove, swallow and dog as these birds are easy to be tamed by its master. Likewise, a husband easily tames his wife in married life. By using all these images to reveal her personal feelings she displays her boldness and frankness which is of course praiseworthy. This article attempts to focus on the images of animals, birds and reptiles used in her poems like "The Old Playhouse", "The Stone Age", "The Freaks", "An Introduction" etc which show her protest against the male domination and help her to describe female marginalization. Boys will be boys encapsulates most of what is wrong with patriarchy, hegemonic masculinity, gender roles, victimisation of females, and the gender binary, all of which play crucial roles in the continued subjugation and oppression of females in our society. Although most general English dictionaries provide a definition for this expression, this paper will demonstrate how they mischaracterise it, and therefore legitimise the repressive, destructive, and violent manifestations of this cultural mindset. After a brief review of the literature, the paraphrases of meaning that several popular dictionaries provide for this expression will be scrutinised. This paper is a comparative study between two selected poems by Maya Angelou, and aims to explore the female oppression as portrayed in her those selected poems. The researcher's objective is to explore the hegemonic culture through subordination, marginalization, and oppression of women. The study is qualitative descriptive with textual analysis by conducting comparative criticism between mentioned poems. Data analysis would be conducted by using the particular ideas of feminist such as Simone de Beauvoir in her book "The Second Sex". Angelou showed oppressed female but in the end Angelou shows how the women not only survive but also triumph. Researcher suggests that there are still so many complexities in the poems of Angelou that other researchers can explore. Scholars can compare more poems of Angelou or other feminist writers with above mentioned poems, and researchers can also conduct their study by taking more than two poems of Angelou for comparative analysis, they can investigate any view point other than female oppression. They are keenly interested in debating the issues of cultural conflicts, differences, identity, assimilation, integration, negation, oppression, sex discrimination and gender inequality in their works. This paper with a focus on Monica Ali's Brick Lane, Nadeem Aslam's Maps for Lost Lovers brings out the features of female oppression that lead to their fragmentation on emotional, social, cultural and physical levels. When the novel begins she is not even aware of what is happening with her. Though she has met Sophia, a born fighter and also Albert's sisters who urge her to fight back, Shug in her life acts as a catalyst. This paper examines how the society shapes and redefines women's identity through capitalist patriarchal economy in Doris Lessing's novel The Grass Is Singing. Being aware of women's sufferings and problems under a patriarchal domination organized in the context of capitalism has consciousness-raising as its outcome. As a result, shared problems and oppressions come to the surface and planning to make a 'change' becomes possible. It is making a 'change' that stands as the ultimate aim of socialist feminists as well as others who are related to feminism(s) in one way or another. This novel relates the story of Mary who lost her economic independence and her status as a successful young woman after her marriage to Dick. The finding shows that Mary's identity goes under a new definition according to the patriarchal capitalist ideology. Another finding suggests that in order to understand the society that Lessing depicts and the way that this society determines the life of the people, one has to look at it from two angles: capitalism and patriarchy.
