Objective The COVID-19 pandemic, which affected almost all areas of life, has had serious effects on education as well. This study aimed to investigate the effects of the online education process on physical activity, perseverance, and coronaphobia among undergraduate physiotherapy students during COVID-19 pandemic. Material and Method A total of 185 undergraduate physiotherapy students were included in the study. Physical activity level was assessed with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF), perseverance with the Short Perseverance Scale (Grit-S), and coronaphobia with the COVID-19 Fear Scale. In addition, the perceived changes in physical activity and perseverance levels during the pandemic were evaluated. The academic performance was determined with the grade point average (GPA). Results It was determined that most of the students perceived a decrease in their physical activity (82.7%) and perseverance (69.2%) levels. There was a moderate positive correlation between GPA and COVID-19 Fear Scale score (rho:0.407, p<0.001) and a negative low correlation between GPA and Grit-S score (rho:- 0.318, p<0.001). Conclusion Physiotherapy students who received online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic could perceive a decrease in their physical activity and perseverance levels. This study has revealed interesting results that higher academic performance may be related to higher coronaphobia and lower perseverance levels. We think that this result may be attributed to the inadequate quality of online assessment methods, lack of information technologies and the uncontrollability of online examinations. AEROBIC capacity , *FORELIMB , *PREOPERATIVE period , *LENGTH of stay in hospitals , *ARM exercises ,TUMOR surgery - Abstract
Objective: The impairment of arm functions can be observed after trimodality therapy for superior sulcus tumors due to several reasons, such as the tumor invasion of the brachial plexus and subclavian arteries, fibrosis secondary to radiotherapy, neuropathy secondary to chemotherapy, and morbidity caused by surgical resection. This study aimed to evaluate patients' arm functions and functional exercise capacities after Pancoast tumor surgery. Methods: The study included patients that underwent surgery for superior sulcus tumors in our clinic after neoadjuvant therapy between April 2017 and April 2022. The patients were evaluated in terms of age, gender, pathology, neoadjuvant treatment, resection, reconstruction material used, mean hospital stay, drain withdrawal time, amount of drainage, morbidity, mortality, arm functions, and functional exercise capacities. Results: Between the specified dates, 18 patients underwent surgery for Pancoast tumors in our clinic. All the patients were male. The mean age was calculated as 62.7±8.0 years. The operation was performed on the right side in 12 patients and the left in six. The most frequently performed procedure was upper lobectomy, while bilobectomy was performed in one patient. Prolonged air leak was the most common morbidity (n=5, 27.7%), but no surgical mortality was observed. Non-surgical upper extremity ranges of motion were complete, and joint limitations were found in the extremity on the surgical side at a rate varying between 28 and 78%, depending on shoulder motion. The patients' mean postoperative six-minute walk test distance was recorded as 536.6±85.7 meters. Conclusion: Preserving the arm and shoulder functions of these patients has gained more importance since it increases the quality of life of these patients. Unfortunately, this study showed that the patients' arm functions were restricted, and functional exercise capacities decreased after Pancoast tumor surgery. Therefore, we recommend that intensive physiotherapy programs be planned for these patients starting from the pre-operative period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The positive effects of sensory design on the perception of space of cerebral palsy patients in physiotherapy and rehabilitation centers have been shed light on, and in this context, the supportive role of healing space design in the treatment of this disease has been revealed. Conclusion: As a result of this study, it has been observed that physiotherapy and rehabilitation centers, sensory design used in design have an effect on the psychological space perception of cerebral palsy patients under the sub-title of light, color and texture. To the treatments applied to the healing power of the place, motor abilities, hand-eye coordination, action-reaction balance is limited. For children struggling with this disease, it is very important to provide conditions that stimulate and develop their muscle and nervous systems in an environment where they feel safe. Aim: In this study, the curative role, quality and scope of sensory design in physiotherapy and rehabilitation centers in Cerebral Palsy (CP) disease, discussed from an interdisciplinary perspective is targeted. Method: Within the scope of the research, data were collected by applying questionnaire and interview technique to evaluate the opinions of physiotherapists, health personnel and doctors working in physiotherapy and rehabilitation centers in Ankara between 2018-2019. Results: Within the scope of the study, the analysis of the data obtained from the questionnaire and interviews made with 48 people consisting of physiotherapists, health personnel and doctors working in physiotherapy and rehabilitation centers, Cerebral Palsy occurs when the brain has not yet completed its development. This disease progresses in the form of motor control and posture disorder, which occurs as a result of an injury with an unclear diagnosis that develops during birth or in the first three years (Altındağ et al. 2009). Serebral Palsi hastalarının temel sorunları, It has been determined that factors affecting sensory integrity, such as the sense of sight and the sense of touch, have an effect on the completion of the lack of physical motor skills., motor kabiliyetleri, el-göz koordinasyonu, etki-tepki dengelerinin kısıtlı olmasıdır. - Abstract
Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive neuromuscular disorder that is characterized by generalized muscle weakness. Any study does not exist showing the results of Nusinersen and physiotherapy in SMA type 1. Our case was diagnosed with SMA type 1 at the age of 3 months. At 8 months of age, Nusinersen treatment and physiotherapy were started. The motor skills were evaluated with CHOP-Intend and Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examinations-2 (HINE-2) before physiotherapy and Nusinersen treatments, and also applied before each dose of Nusinersen during 22 months. An increase of 14 and 13 points in CHOP-Intend and HINE-2 were shown from baseline to the last visit, respectively. This report revealed the improvement of motor functions of a child with SMA type 1 by the combination of physiotherapy and Nusinersen. Our study may encourage physiotherapists and physicians to long-term use of a combination of these two therapies for the aim of motor improvement in this neuromuscular disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a family-centered early exercise program in infants with Narakas Stage 1 brachial plexus birth palsy. Method: The data of the infants with brachial plexus birth palsy followed up at the physical medicine and rehabilitation outpatient clinic of a tertiary pediatric research center were retrospectively investigated. Infants with Narakas Stage 1 brachial plexus birth palsy according to the Narakas classification were included in the study. Sixty infants were assessed using a passive-active range of motion (ROM) and active movement scale at first clinic visit and every month until they became 12 months old. Results: Cases were divided into two groups (Group I, n:32) or (Group II, n:28) according to their referral times to the outpatient clinics of physical medicine and rehabilitation. In both groups, a significant improvement was observed in the ROM and muscle strength of shoulder, elbow flexion, and forearm supination at the 3rd, 6th and 12th-month assessments. At 12th months intergroup differences were detected in shoulder abduction muscle force assessments (p<0.05) and active ROM measures of shoulder abduction-internal rotation-external rotation and forearm supination (p<0.05). Conclusion: Family-centered early therapy program is effective against complications that may occur in the first year of infants with Narakas Stage1 brachial plexus birth palsy. In infants with brachial plexus birth palsy, not only neurological improvement should be focused, but also regular follow-ups should be made regarding complications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been used to maintain adequate gas exchange in patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). The aim of this case report is to share our center's experience with physiotherapy in patients with ARDS on ECMO, to support the use of physiotherapy and to relate the long-term functional outcomes of the patient at six months after discharge. We present here the case of a 28-year-old female who was referred to our intensive care unit with a diagnosis of ARDS being supported by ECMO. While on ECMO, she received physiotherapy interventions including passive techniques, and participated in an active mobility program following ECMO. Her long-term outcomes, including functional level, exercise capacity, dyspnea, muscle strength, anxiety, depression and quality of life, assessed six months after discharge, were at a very good level. We consider that participation in the early physiotherapy and mobility program may contribute to short- and long-term functional improvements in an ECMO patient. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cerebellar ataxia associated with the aarF-domain-containing kinase 3 (ADCK3) gene mutation is a hereditary type of ataxia related to autosomal recessive cerebellar ataxias. Additional symptoms, such as epileptic seizures, pyramidal signs, and myoclonus, may be seen in this progressive ataxia. This case report aimed to present the results of the physiotherapy and rehabilitation program of a 19-year-old patient with cerebellar ataxia and myoclonus, due to coenzyme Q10 deficiency, associated with the ADCK3 gene mutation. International cooperative ataxia rating scale, mini-mental state examination, observational posture analysis, unified myoclonus rating scale, Purdue-Pegboard test, timed up and go test, functional and computerized balance tests, and Nottingham health profile were used when evaluating the patient. The patient underwent special neck exercises consisting of reeducation of neutral posture and cervical stabilization exercises for three days a week, totaling nine weeks. At the end of the treatment, improvement in the patient's posture, marked decrease in myoclonus, and significant improvements in fine hand skills, balance parameters, and quality of life were obtained. It is likely that the physiotherapy approach, consisting of special neck exercises, has improved postural control by contributing to the development of the sensory processes needed to achieve postural control. Therefore, special neck exercises have the potential to be an alternative treatment option for these patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Scoliosis is the 3-dimensional deformity of the body, which is accompanied by lateral deviation of the spine in the frontal plane to the convex side, rotation in the transverse plane (in the same direction as the lateral deviation), kyphosis, lordosis or hyperlordosis in the sagittal plane. This deformity can lead to progressive postural deformities that affect the quality of life as well as back pain, flexibility problems, wrong posture and aesthetic problems during growth. In non-conservative treatment, surgery is usually required to correct spinal deformities, but these methods are not risk-free methods. Conservative treatments such as physiotherapy, scoliosis-specific exercises are used as alternative methods for patients with a curve less than 50 degrees, with or without simultaneous braces. Observation for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, scoliosis-specific physiotherapy exercises and brace use during growth are the treatment approaches adopted by the International Society for Scoliosis Orthopedic Treatment and Rehabilitation (Society on Scoliosis Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Treatment-SOSORT). These approaches contribute to reducing the Cobb angle, preventing progression, and reducing muscle imbalance and pain. Scoliosis-specific physiotherapy exercises are part of a wide scoliosis treatment model, including scoliosis-focused training, scoliosis-specific physiotherapy exercises, observation or surveillance, psychological support, brace use, and surgical intervention. In addition, it helps in 3-dimensional self-correction and long-term stabilization of the corrected posture. There are seven major scoliosis schools, which include scoliosis-specific exercises. These schools have many goals such as stopping the progression of curvature, curving curvature, reducing trunk rotation, reducing pain, reducing the need for surgical treatment, maintaining pulmonary and cardiac functions and improving quality of life. The aim of the study is to examine these seven main scoliosis schools with scoliosis-specific exercises in detail and to give information about their brace techniques. In our study, the superiority of the treatment approaches of these schools was not compared. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
